It was only open a few years, but Safari Sam's made its mark in Huntington Beach. Black Flag, Social Distortion, 10,000 Maniacs, Jonathan Richman, The Minutemen and many more played here.  It opened Sept. 1, 1984 and lasted until Nov. 23, 1986. One of the most legendary nights at Sam's?  The first-ever Jane's Addiction show, which took place on Oct. 13, 1985, opening for Love & Terror under the misnomer "James Addiction." The historic building at 411 Olive Avenue still stands, today the home of the International Surfing Museum.

How to Claim Your Part of a $45 Million Walmart Settlement

A class-action lawsuit accusing the retail giant of inflating prices of certain weighed foods and produce resulted in a settlement. Customers may be eligible for a payment of up to $500.

Some Walmart customers may be entitled to claim up to $500 as part of a $45 million settlement that the retail giant is paying to resolve a class-action lawsuit, according to a settlement administrator’s website .

The lawsuit, filed on Oct. 19, 2022, claimed that Walmart overcharged shoppers for in-store purchases of certain weighted grocery items, including poultry and pork, and for bagged citrus. The lawsuit accuses the company of “unfair and deceptive business practices” that resulted in higher costs than what were advertised, according to court documents .

The lawsuit alleges that Walmart falsely inflated product weight, mislabeled products and overcharged for clearance products sold by weight.

The retail giant has denied the allegations, but it agreed to the settlement. “We believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties,” a Walmart spokeswoman said in a statement.

Walmart is accused of overcharging for some weighted items.

The lawsuit claims that Walmart overcharged for certain items. Prices for weighted products, including meat, poultry, pork and seafood, sometimes differed between the item labels and the labels on the shelves, and customers were charged for the higher prices at checkout, according to the settlement.

Other grocery descriptions are said to have been distorted, too. Some bagged citrus products, including navel oranges, organic oranges, organic grapefruit and tangerines, were labeled with a weight that was lower than what appeared on the shelf tags, and customers were charged for a heavier weight of the products than what they took home.

The lawsuit also included some weighted goods that were near expiration, and displayed a price that was lower than what appeared on the register.

How do I find out if I’m eligible for a payment?

Any customers who shopped in a store at a Walmart retail location in the United States and Puerto Rico between Oct. 19, 2018, and Jan. 19, 2024, and purchased the included weighted goods or bagged citrus can apply for a settlement payment through the administrator’s website or by mail.

The deadline to submit any claim is June 5, 2024.

How do I apply, and how much should I expect?

To apply, either fill out the online form on the administrator’s website , or download a form to print and send by mail to an address provided on the form. The form requires claimants to submit contact information, describe the type and number of items purchased, and select a payment option, and gives them the opportunity to upload receipts.

The amount that claimants receive, if approved, can vary. With proof of purchase, shoppers can take home up to 2 percent of the total amount they paid for weighted goods and bagged citrus, with a cap of $500.

I don’t keep grocery receipts from five years ago …

Fear not, you may still receive a little cash, though less than the $500 cap. If you submit a claim without documentation, you can receive between $10 and $25 , depending on the number of relevant items purchased.

When will I find out if I’m approved?

The final approval hearing is scheduled for June 12, 2024. If you qualify for a payment, money will be transferred to you electronically, or by check if requested. The deadline to object or comment on the settlement is May 22, 2024.

Defense in Bernstein murder trial puts blame on Woodward’s ‘internal struggles’ during opening statements

Defense attorneys for Sam Woodward did not deny the Newport Beach man with ties to an insurrectionst neo-Nazi group repeatedly stabbed and killed Blaze Bernstein, a gay Jewish former art school classmate, during a late night meetup six years ago.

Instead, Kenneth Morrison of the Orange County Public Defender’s office argued during opening statements Tuesday that his 26-year-old client’s actions were the result of a struggle to come to terms with his own sexuality and conservative upbringing, as well as symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder.

Woodward is facing a charge of first degree murder with a hate crime enhancement for Bernstein’s death. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Morrison claimed Woodward was not motivated by hate and that Bernstein’s killing was not a hate crime.

“The ‘why’ is the single most important issue you will need to decide,” Morrison told Orange County Superior Court jurors in a courtroom packed with about 50 relatives and spectators.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Jennifer Walker painted Woodward as a prominent member of Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi group that hosted “hate camps” and promoted sabotage in order to overthrow the government. She pointed out that he kept a sort of diary via email, in which he described catfishing and then ghosting gay men on Tinder.

“This is [expletive] hilarious,” Woodward wrote on May 14, 2017. “I tell sodomites I’m bicurious, which makes them try to convert me …. Get them hooked by acting coy, maybe send them a pic or two, beat around the bush and pretend to tell them that I like them and then kabam, I either un-friend them or tell them they have been pranked, ha ha.”

He and Bernstein had been classmates at the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana, where the defendant was viewed as a pariah by most of his peers, according to Morrison, who said that was partly due to his then-undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder and staunchly conservative views, particularly in regards to sexuality.

Woodward grew up in a traditional Catholic household, with even his father telling investigators that he did not believe he would be willing to come out to relatives if he were gay, Morrison said. The defense attorney further claimed his client did pursue a romantic relationship with at least one male student at OCSA, Gabriel Morris.

The defendant and victim lost touch with each other after Bernstein began taking classes at the University of Pennsylvania and Woodward started attending Cal State Channel Islands. The defendant, described as impressionable and a history buff by many who knew him, continued to struggle to make friends into college. That made him an easy target for recruitment and indoctrination by Atomwafffen Division, Morrison argued.

Woodward had already catfished numerous other gay men on social media by the time he and Bernstein matched on Tinder in June 2017, Walker said.

Morrison pointed out that Bernstein told numerous other mutual acquaintances he had matched with his former art school classmate, despite being asked to keep the connection a secret.

Six months later, Woodward reached out to Bernstein and apologized for ghosting him. The victim warily accepted the gesture, and only agreed to meet with him that evening after Woodward mentioned he had gone through problems related to substance abuse, although investigators would not find direct evidence of such issues.

Cell tower data show Woodward picked Bernstein up at his home late on the evening of Jan. 2, 2018, before heading to nearby Borrego Park. From there, according to the data, Woodward apparently returned home for about an hour, then went back to the park for another hour. Details regarding what exactly happened during that time remain unconfirmed.

Bernstein’s mother, Jeanne Pepper, recalled from a witness stand on Wednesday the moment she realized her son had gone missing. They were supposed to go to the dentist’s office on Jan. 3, but he missed the appointment. She thought the 19-year-old had just slept in, until their housekeeper called and told her he wasn’t in his room that morning.

“She said the bed was made up when she walked in,” Pepper said. “I screamed at that moment. I ran to the car, and I called my husband.”

They found find their son’s keys, wallet and glasses when they got to their house. But his body wouldn’t be found for another six days. An examination of his social media accounts would lead his relatives to contact Woodward, who was believed to be one of the last people to ever speak to Bernstein.

Heavy rain that Jan. 9 would partially unearth Bernstein’s shallow grave in Borrego Park, not far from his family’s Foothill Ranch home. He had been stabbed 28 times, including numerous cuts to his neck and defensive wounds on his hands. And in the days that followed, a large amount of Nazi propaganda discovered on Woodward’s phone would cast him as a suspect in the case.

“Blaze fought for his life as best as he could,” Walker said.

The trial is expected to continue throughout the spring. Morrison repeatedly said he expects his client to testify in court.

Danny Willett, the 2016 champion, has to be pretty thrilled with his 1-under start through six holes today, considering he wasn't certain if he was going to play this first round.

Willett said he was still "touch and go" earlier this week, the result of shoulder surgery only seven months ago. Willett hasn't played competitively since the procedure and said he could withdraw "unless I can do myself justice."

Well, the 36-year-old was 2-under through three holes today and still in good shape. Since winning at Augusta eight years ago, Willett has missed five cuts, while finishing T25 in 2020 and T12 in 2022.

The 6ft 8in South African amateur may have ended in the trees to the right of the par-5 second, but his wonderful second shot recovers the situation beautifully to leave him on the fringe of the green.

The South African, like Knapp, also picked up a shot on the par-3 third but was able to keep to par on the fourth.

His birdie came from a delicious second-shot approach to within 9ft of the pin. Lovely stuff.

It's been an up-down start for Masters debutant Jake Knapp , who remains level par after four holes.

He his his second shot within 12ft of the pin, before rolling in his birdie putt to go -1 on the par-4 third. Then on the fourth, he left his par putt under the hole after under-hitting up the sharp slope, dropping a shot on the par-3 fourth.

He'd already dug himself out of bunker trouble to save par on the second.

Moore up and running on the second 🐦

Taylor Moore has also picked up his first shot of the Masters, on the par-5 second.

An excellent chip to within 9ft of the pin over the right greenside bunker presents a short putt for the birdie.

Settle in, this could take a while

I've already mentioned how the wind will toy with the players as they head around Augusta National for their opening round. We've also had a two and a half-hour delay to the start due to those forecasts of thunderstorms.

Well, the challenge of playing in this wind means play is unlikely to be as quick as on those beautifully blue, still days.

Russian IADS Redux Part-7: The Effectors

In the next part of our series on Russia’s strategic integrated air defence system, we look at the kinetic ground-based air defence systems it deploys.

In part-6 of our series on Russia’s strategic Integrated Air Defence System (IADS) we examined the command and control architecture it depends upon. The IADS’ role is ultimately to provide a response to air threats approaching or entering Russian airspace. In Russian air defence doctrine this response is provided using kinetic and/or electronic effects.

The kinetic side of the IADS depends on the Russian Aerospace Force’s (RASF’s) fighters and Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems. Sources have shared with Armada that both the fighter and SAM force would be deployed in wartime to protect key Russian strategic targets. Typically, these could include politico-military targets like the Kremlin, the seat of the Russian government in Moscow. Other potential strategic targets include hardened facilities believed to be earmarked for use by the Russian leadership in wartime. One of these facilities is thought to be located at Mount Yamantau, southwest Russia. A back-up facility may exist at Mount Kosvinsky Kaman, western Russia. Russia’s industrial city of Elektrostal, on the eastern outskirts of Moscow, was one of the first locations where the RASF deployed its S-400 (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler) high-altitude, long-range SAM systems in 2010.

The SAM Systems

Moscow itself is ring-fenced by the RASF’s 53T6 (ABM-3 Gazelle) anti-ballistic missile system. The 53T6 employs SAMs equipped with a ten kiloton (one kiloton is equal to 1,000 tonnes of conventional explosive) nuclear warhead. These missiles would detonate at altitude in proximity to incoming salvos of ballistic missile warheads or formations of hostile aircraft. The logic is that this ‘shotgun’ approach will vaporise, or at least badly damage, these targets.

The S-400 is the mainstay of the RASF SAM force. A typical S-400 battalion includes two batteries. A battery comprises between eight and twelve individual launch vehicles, each equipped with four missile tubes. Thus, an S-400 regiment could have between 56 and 84 individual missiles ready to launch if fully loaded.  Each battery has a command post, a 91N6 (Big Bird) S-band (2.3 gigahertz/GHz to 2.5GHz/2.7GHz to 3.7GHz) 324 nautical mile/nm (600 kilometre/km) range surveillance and tracking radar. The 91N6 is joined by a 96L6E (Cheese Board) C-band (5.25GHz to 5.925GHz) early warning and target acquisition radar. This radar has a range of up to 162nm (300km). A plethora of SAMs can be launched by the S-400 with an array of engagement ranges from 21.6nm (40km) using the active radar homing 9M96E missile. Engagement ranges can reach up to 216nm (400km) using the 40N6E missile which has a reported engagement altitude of 98,425 feet/ft (30,000 metres/m).

Legacy systems used by the RASF include the S-300PS (SA-10B Grumble-B) and S-300PM (SA-10D/E Grumble) which have subtle differences. An S-300PS battery has three Maz-543 launch vehicles each with four launch tubes. The battery is also equipped with a single 5N63S (Flap Lid-B) X-band (8.5GHz to 10.68GHz) fire control radar. An S-300PM battery has a single 36N6E (Flap Lid) X-band/Ku-band (13.4GHz to 14GHz/15.7GHz to 17.7GHz) fire control radar with a 162nm (300km) range. Joining the 36N6E is a 76N6 (Clam Shell) X-band (8.5GHz to 10.68GHz) search and track radar with a 70nm (120km) range. The rest of the battery is comprised of up to eight Kraz-260 launch vehicles each with four tubes. Both the S-300PS/PM are thought to deploy 48N6/E SAMs which have a reported 81nm (150km) range. The S-300PS/PM’s 5V55R missile has an engagement range of up to 48.6nm (90km).

Sources have shared with Armada that RASF SAM batteries are not routinely deployed but may deploy from time-to-time to support exercises or training. The batteries would only be deployed in anger to protect key strategic targets like those discussed above. The sources continued that the task of the SAM units is to provide a protective ‘bubble’ above these targets. Air defence coverage up to 54 nautical miles/nm (100 kilometres/km) altitude and a range radius of 189nm (350km) around the target would be provided. The SAM units would work to attrit any incoming air attack as much as possible. Russian air defence doctrine focuses on safeguarding as many strategic targets as possible in anticipation of an eventual counterattack.

One crucial part of the RASF’s SAM force is its 96K6 Pantsir-S1 (SA-22 Greyhound) combined medium-range SAM and anti-aircraft artillery systems. 96K6 units would deploy with S-300 and S-400 batteries. Their role would be to destroy air-launched weapons like anti-radiation missiles or attack helicopters engaging the batteries Armada’s sources added.

Over the longer term, the RASF is looking to introduce new SAM systems to enhance the strategic IADS in the form of the S-350E and S-500 Prometey long-range, high-altitude SAM systems. The S-350E is mooted as a replacement for the RASF’s S-300PS/PM batteries. Open sources state that a S-350E battery has one 50N6A X-band ground-based air surveillance radar with a range of 215nm (400km). The 50N6A is joined by a single 50K6A mobile command post and up to eight 50P6 launch vehicles. Each launch vehicle can fire 9M96/E or 9M100 SAMs with engagement ranges and altitudes of up to 65nm (120km) and 98,000ft (30,000m) respectively. It was reported in January 2020 that the first S-350E battery had entered service, although a developmental system may have been deployed to support Russia’s military presence in Syria. The VKS could receive twelve S-350E batteries by 2027.

The S-500 is mooted to have a longer engagement range than the S-350E. The S-500 ensemble includes a 91N6A(M) air surveillance and battle management radar. This radar is an enhanced version of the 91N6A radar accompanying the S-400. The S-500’s 96L6TSP target acquisition radar is an enhanced variant of the S-400’s 96L6E. These two systems are accompanied by the 76T6 multimode fire control radar, itself thought to be a derivative of the 92N6. Also forming part of the S-500 ensemble is the 77T6 anti-ballistic missile engagement radar the capabilities of which remain largely unknown in the public domain.

Open sources say that missiles equipping the S-500 could hit targets at ranges of up to 270nm (500km). Russian sources have claimed that the S-500 could engage targets at up to 656,168ft (200,000m) altitude. Russian media, seldom the most reliable source, claim that the first S-500 regiment went on combat duty in October 2021.

The long-term prognosis for the S-500 and S-350E systems remains uncertain. As documented by the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based thinktank, the Russian defence industry is dependent on clandestinely-sourced Western microelectronics for sophisticated weapons systems. Will Western efforts to clamp down on Russia’s access to such technology have an impact on the fortunes of the S-350E and S-500?
