The Making Waves Tour with Sharp’s Brewery, Whitby

August 3, 2019 by Rachel Nicole Leave a Comment

sharp's brewery tour

It’s always rather fun when a new and exciting event comes to the Yorkshire Coast. Yesterday, I headed across to Whitby to check out the Making Waves Tour. I’d been kindly invited along by Sharp’s Brewery who produce the Offshore Pilsner. Sharp’s Brewery is based in Rock, Cornwall. A lot of the inspiration especially for the Offshore Pilsner was taken from the local coastal heritage. The love of the coast and the ocean was how the Making the Waves Tour was created. The tour has been travelling around different seaside resorts with a range of fun activities, DJ’s, food and their famous Offshore Pilsner.

Last night’s even took place in Abbey Wharf ; which is one of my favourite places to eat and drink in Whitby as it’s got a really relaxed vibe. Abbey Wharf also has a little roof terrace which overlooks Whitby Harbour. The terrace is where some of the Making Waves Tour fun was happening. As soon as we arrived, there was a glass of chilled Offshore Pilsner with our names on it.

I’m not going to lie, it’s a pretty rare seeing myself with a pint of beer. It’s not really my first drink of choice but I have had my head turned with the Offshore Pilsner. It’s not really like anything I’ve had before with a refreshing but fruity flavour. I am quite a fruity person so it’s no wonder that I loved the tropical and lemon aroma. Offshore was recently re-branded but was previously known as Cornish Pilsner and even won an award for the World’s Best Lager.

Throughout the evening was a talented Graffiti Artist who had completely transformed three white surfboards into a piece of art using spray paint. It was pretty incredible to watch and he even included a little mini Whitby Abbey on of the boards. Another thing we had to try out was their Wind Cannon which felt like you were in the middle of tornado or alternatively, riding the waves! Here you could create your own little GIF which I’ll insert below. Whilst this was all going on, music was playing from a custom made playlist created by Rob Da Bank.

As I said before, the food is delicious at Abbey Wharf so we ordered some snacks for the table whilst we enjoyed the music. We were actually advised that light fishy dishes go amazingly with Offshore which is perfect considering we were right by the sea. We opted for the Fish Goujons and a cone of chips and it was just the right snack to have alongside Offshore. We’ve already planned to go back to Abbey Wharf soon for a sit down meal.

To finish off the evening we had a DJ set from the headline act; KrystalRoxx . I think she’s actually a DJ at Ibiza Rocks and she was really bringing the Ibiza vibes. It was a great way to finish off the evening before we headed home. A massive thank you to Sharp’s Brewery who invited me down, it was a great way to spend a Summer’s evening and I think we’ve all just found a new favourite lager. It’s also lovely to see an event like this come up to the Yorkshire Coast.

Have you tried Offshore Pilsner before?

Sharp’s Brewery Tour

sharps brewery beers

After we had seen the whole process we were able to try some of the bottled beers; 11 in total we tried on our visit. It was similar to wine tasting with the water swishing out in between each one. The photo shows the beers we tried from our favourite (on the left) to the ones less for us (on the right). The range of colour and flavour between them was remarkable; from light and citrusy to deep and honeyed. For someone who used to think all beer tasted the same this was eye opening. The best bit was when they brought out the chocolate. The two bars of chocolate have been created specially to pair with the Honey Spice beer (white chocolate with lemon meringue) and the Quadrupel (70% dark chocolate). Beer and chocolate I tried in Bruges but it was beer that had the chocolate (or flavour) in it. This was different, not least because the chocolate had other flavours, but because you could make it as strong or faint in chocolate flavour as you liked by nibbling. One of the more intriguing beers was one called Land Shrimp. I kid you not when I tell you that it was made with woodlice, hence the name. It was quite a bitter beer I thought but I couldn’t tell you if that was down to the woodlice or not. Apparently you can add almost anything to beer!

sharp's quadrupel ale

We bought some of the beers home with us; Honey Spice, Spiced Red and Quadrupel. Interestingly they are best drunk between 8-14C so they have the perfect home next to the front door and also act as a useful draft excluder. The quadruple ale uses four types of malt, four types of hops and four types of yeast and takes six months to mature before they can bottle it. That is why the range of Connoisseurs Beers is limited edition. I’m not worried though as they are already brewing up the next new Connoisseur flavour so I’ll be in British Belgian beer for the foreseeable future. Thank you to Sharp’s for the tour and tasting. All opinions expressed are my own and I was not asked to or paid to write this review.

Fun post. I used to drink beer more than I do now, but from time to time there’s nothing that beats the flavor of a good beer. And it’s always fun finding new ones to try! Really enjoyable post – thanks.

Very interesting post – a beer and chocolate flavour bar is new to me and not something I have come across before.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Highland Brewing celebrates 30 years with Big Bash, classic beers, disc golf, more

sharp's brewery tour

ASHEVILLE - Highland Brewing, the craft brewery that laid the foundation for Asheville’s beer industry, is turning 30 years old and the founding family is holding nothing back for its anniversary celebration.

From April 28 to May 5, several new and throwback beer releases, a 90’s dance party, music showcase and other communal activities and events are planned for the weeklong series, and it all kicks off with a doubles disc golf tournament.

In 1994, Oscar Wong, a retired engineer and Chinese-Jamaican immigrant, began brewing beer from the basement of Barley’s in downtown Asheville. The small-scale production flourished, blazing a trail for other breweries, turning the city into a mecca of craft beverages.

Join Highland Brewing’s family and friends for a communitywide bash at the brewery’s main campus and downtown taproom (56 Patton Ave.). And catch Wong making the opening pitch at an Asheville Tourists baseball game at McCormick Field.

Highland Brewing’s anniversary events

All events are at Highland Brewing's main taproom at 12 Old Charlotte Highway unless noted otherwise.

  • April 28. Frisbeers + 30 Years Doubles Disc Golf Tournament from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • April 29. Highland Brewing trivia with the family owners standing in as guest bartenders from 6-8 p.m.
  • April 30. Making History: Sip Through Fabled Stories and Future Scenes, a panel discussion and tasting with family owners from 6-8 p.m.
  • May 1. Well Crafted Music Series with Matt Smith, Graham Sharp and Seth Kauffman from 6-8 p.m.

Take a stroll through the immersive Heritage Hall archives exhibit. And dance to 90s tunes spun by DJ Molly Part and live music performed by The Wilson Springs Hotel and Rainy Eyes. Purchase food from six local food trucks, including Bun Intended and Ben’s Backdraft BBQ. Parking is limited and $10 per vehicle; ridesharing is recommended.
  • May 4. Party Like It’s 1994, from 11 a.m.-10 p.m., is free to the public but includes a special VIP experience (ages 21 and up) that includes rooftop and mezzanine access, a meet + greet with Highland owners Leah Wong Ashburn and Oscar Wong, a hand-signed DIPA bottle from Oscar Wong, silo cabana access, free parking and more. • May 5. Cinco De Mayo Brunch from 11:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Downtown Taproom.

Highland Brewing’s anniversary week beer releases

Highland is marking the occasion with new beer releases and the return of several throwback favorites from over the decades.

The new releases:

  • OG Dub IPA. The highly limited 500ML bottled IPA ― fewer than 100 ― will be available only at the brewery, released on May 4 at The Big Bash. It’s named after founder Oscar Wong and the Highland staff “lovingly” refers to it as OPW in his honor. 8.5% ABV
  • The Long Game Tropical Lager. Highland's 30th anniversary release, the tropical lager will be available in stores throughout the Southeast as early as April 28. Beginning May 4, it will be available on draft and in 6-packs at the brewery. 4.8% ABV

“We named our 30th anniversary beer The Long Game to capture the spirit of Highland Brewing’s tenacity over the decades,” Leah Wong Ashburn, president and CEO of Highland Brewing said in a news release. “Short games lead to short gains. To better ensure the livelihoods of our employees and contribute to the vitality of our city today and tomorrow, we still aim for lasting impact.”

Throwback draft beers:

  • St. Terese's Pale Ale. The American Pale Ale features a zesty grapefruit flavor, bright citrus, and soft floral spicy notes. 5.1% ABV
  • L ittle Hump Session IPA. Brewed to exude a “lovely floral springtime vibe,” the Imperial Pale Ale demonstrates complex aromas of stone fruit, pine and citrus zest and is considered a crisp, clean easy-drinking ale. 4.5% ABV
  • Devil's Britches Imperial Red Ale. The sweet, hoppy and balanced malt gives off aromas of cherry and pine and a clean and bright bitterness. 7.5% ABV
  • Mandarina IPA. Treat yourself to a dessert beer reminiscent of sherbet with notes of orange creamsicle and aromas of light vanilla, balanced malt character and citrus. 5% ABV.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

sharp's brewery tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
