Main Characteristics

Form

Refined, advanced design

Starting from the handsome yet simple design of the previous model, the J-Cruise II offers an even more modern, refined shell style. We took a hard look at the details such as the operating mechanism of the sun visor and other parts, to create a more compact shell than the previous model. We also redesigned the back of the helmet for better aerodynamic performance with a unique shape, transforming this helmet into an aero-device where the shell shape serves as a spoiler.

Ventilation system

shoei j cruise s

Cool wearability proven by wind tunnel test results

The heat that a rider experiences has a direct effect on how exhausted they feel. The helmet's ability keep things cool inside of the helmet through proper ventilation is a crucial factor that riders require from any helmet. The J-Cruise II has undergone repeated tests at SHOEI's own large-scale wind tunnel test facility, in the relentless pursuit of improving ventilation performance. Another intake hole has been added to the upper air intake for 30% more inflow of air into the helmet vs. the previous model. We also studied many different shapes for the top air outlet, to provide the best shape for optimum air outflow efficiency. As a result, we increased the outflow air volume by 20% or more, while maintaining the same number of air outlet holes as the previous model.

(Reference value comparison measured using our in-house wind tunnel testing facilities)

shoei j cruise s

We exposed the J-Cruise and J-Cruise II to wind velocities equivalent to 100 km/h, and measured their respective air intake volumes. The inflow on the J-Cruise II was around 1.3 times greater than that of our previous model. *Reference value comparison measured using our in-house wind tunnel testing facilities

shoei j cruise s

For the shape of the center part inside the top air outlet, we tested many different patterns at our large-scale wind tunnel facility, to find the best shape with the most effective ventilation. (patent pending)

Shield/Visor System

Maintains a clear field of view at all times, so you can enjoy the scenery.

The J-Cruise II uses the CJ-2 shield/visor, with a minimum of distortion and a clear field of view. The rib on the bottom edge of the shield/visor has been designed for greater rigidity, and wind turbulence within the helmet has been kept to a bare minimum. The window beading was changed from the previous double-lipped shape to airtight-sealed window beading, which offers both excellent sealing performance and durability. This design offers a helmet with superior airtight performance.

shoei j cruise s

A shield/visor lock is used on the bottom left edge of the shield/visor to prevent accidental opening. The locking mechanism is simple and accurate, allowing the shield/visor to lock when closed fully, and for the shield/visor to be opened just by pushing outwards on the inside of the bottom left edge of the shield/visor.

shoei j cruise s

The J-Cruise II now offers a new slightly open position setting for the shield/visor base. Use the slightly open position to quickly defog and efficiently ventilate the inside of the helmet, if the shield/visor fogs up while you are riding. The slightly open position was designed so that the shield/visor can be kept open, at a position where the lower edge of the shield/visor or the silicone seal of the PINLOCK® EVO lens does not interfere with your field of vision.

shoei j cruise s

The J-Cruise II comes standard-equipped with a PINLOCK® EVO lens that protects against shield/visor fogging. This lens ensures a clear field of vision, even when riding in high humidity or cold weather. *Image shown is for purpose of illustration.

QSV-2 Sun Visor

New sun visor further reduces sunlight entering the helmet.

Although the shields/visors on open-faced helmets that cover the rider's entire face allow light to enter over a wider area, care needs to be taken to reduce glare. The J-Cruise II uses a QSV-2 sun visor that is 5 mm longer than the previous model, to reduce the amount of sunlight that comes in through the lower part of the shield/visor. With a longer sun visor, the distance from the wearer's nose when using the sun visor is closer than on the QSV-1, so the shape of the nose part has been cut deeper than the QSV-1 to avoid contact.

shoei j cruise s

A high-precision sun visor, rivaling the EN-1836 standard set by European sunglasses.

shoei j cruise s

The levers on both sides of the eye port can be pulled out to stabilize the sun visor base, so that you can attach and remove the sun visor more smoothly. *Be sure that the lever is in the downward position and that the mechanism is unlocked when you are not attaching or removing the sun visor.

A highly comfortable design when taken off, put on or worn

The fabric used on the interior surface is a hybrid between moisture-absorbent, quick-drying material and soft raised fabric. Moisture-absorbent and quick-drying material is used on areas that cover the cheeks and brow where sweat tends to stick; and soft raised fabric is used on the parts where the skin tends to rub against when the rider wears/removes the helmet. This offers greater snugness and optimum comfort when wearing the helmet. The bottom edge of the cheek pad uses leather-like material that is more durable than the previous model, with an added design pattern with attention to detail.

Micro-ratchet-type chinstrap

Micro-ratchet-type chinstrap

SHOEI's unique chinstrap design: safe and easy to use

The J-Cruise II features a micro-ratchet-type chinstrap, which the rider can adjust even while wearing thick gloves. The chinstrap features SHOEI's unique design, made for both convenience and safety, with the latches always hooking on in two places when locked. The lock opens if the buckle lever is lifted past a certain point.

Attachment mechanism for exclusively-designed communication system

Easy to wear with excellent design.

Highly convenient communication systems are becoming a must-have feature for many riders. The J-Cruise II features an attachment mechanism for the SRL or SRL2 communication system, designed exclusively by SENA. Having an exclusive design allows the communication system to blend in well with the helmet when attached, and the system is easy to attach.

shoei j cruise s

The SRL and SRL2 communication systems designed exclusively for our helmets are made by SENA. These systems are not included with the helmet. SENA sells the SRL/SRL2, and all related service and support is provided by SENA.

Shoei J-Cruise Review

Shoei J-Cruise Helmet Review

shoei j cruise s

The new Shoei J-Cruise replaces the popular and long-lived Shoei J-Wing helmet.

The J-Cruise feels just like a full-face helmet…but without a chin bar.

In other words, it has all of the features and build quality you’d expect from a Shoei helmet.

This includes the outstanding ventilation that has become a Shoei trademark, also implemented on the  Shoei GT Air (review)  and other recent Shoei helmets.

The J-Cruise includes the excellent internal sun visor system found on the GT Air, which is enclosed in a special chamber in the brow that doesn’t reduce the thickness of the EPS protection in that area.

And the sun visor uses the same optical-grade polymer that Shoei uses in the GT Air, which makes a big difference in visual quality.

The bottom line? The Shoei J-Cruise is by far the most solid-feeling open-face helmet we’ve reviewed by far.

It’s a full-face helmet in an open-face shell. Motorcycle riders who don’t like the feeling of a full-face helmet will find a lot to like.

We don’t review many open-face helmets on webBikeWorld, simply because most of the evaluators and reviewers don’t usually wear one.

But that may change with the new Shoei J-Cruise.

It’s basically a full-face helmet in an open-face shell; in other words, you give up the protection of a chin bar but there really aren’t any other compromises to be made.

The J-Cruise replaces the Shoei J-Wing, a helmet we never did get to review. But the J-Cruise is new in every way and it incorporates all of the latest Shoei design themes and technology found in helmets like the  Shoei GT Air (review) , the  Shoei Qwest (review)  and the  Shoei Neotec (review) .

In fact, the Shoei helmet lineup probably has more consistency in terms of design than it ever did before…right down to the “Shoei fit”, which is what we call a “Slightly Narrow” profile.

Shoei J-Cruise Top View

The Shoei J-Cruise: Paint, Graphics and Overall Quality

Our J-Cruise in Anthracite Metallic has the same outstanding Shoei quality we’ve come to expect from the brand. It’s one of the features you pay for but the difference is noticeable.

Shoei J-Cruise EPS Liner

This particular helmet in this color reminds us of the Shoei Qwest and Neotec we reviewed.

The features carry the same design and styling themes and the Anthracite Metallic color is used in several other Shoei helmets.

The movement and feel of the vents and the large face shield all have a quality feel that makes this helmet special.

And the same plush Shoei liner and padding is included.

Shoei seems to be a bit coy about the shell construction on the J-Cruise.

But the paint quality is outstanding also, with a thick-feeling clear coat that should provide good protection for the entire five-year warranty period and beyond.

Also, the new internal sun visor design that we described in the GT Air review has also been incorporated into the J-Cruise.

The sun visor is optical grade quality and that makes a big difference. The clarity is definitely noticeable and makes all other internal sun visors seem cheap in comparison.

And Shoei listened to our gripes about “on/off” sun visors; this one uses a simple friction design that allows the sun visor to be stopped in any intermediate position, while still providing enough coverage fully lowered.

Score : The Shoei J-Cruise gets an “Outstanding” rating for paint and overall quality. See the Summary Table at the bottom of the page for a description of our rating system.

Shoei J-Cruise Sun Visor Lever

Shoei J-Cruise Fit, Sizing and Internal Shape

The term “Shoei fit” has been thrown about in the past by motorcyclists but we didn’t think that there really was such a thing until recently.

But we’ve noticed that the GT Air, the Qwest, RF-1100, Neotec and other recent Shoei helmets all seem to have what we call a “Slightly Narrow” internal shape and they’re all similar enough that this can now indeed be termed “the Shoei fit”.

This is both good and bad news, however. It’s good news for “Neutral” to “Slightly Narrow” head shapes (the majority), but bad news for “Round” head minorities like me (Rick).

My head is widest at the temples, and the recent Shoei helmets just don’t fit as comfortably as I’d like, which is a real shame.

“Burn”, however, is a Shoei-head through and through…as is the majority, apparently. But I do wish Shoei would recognize the fact that there are head shapes like mine and make helmets to match.

For more information on human head shapes, be sure to read the interesting report on the Hohenstein Institute head shape study  we published recently, or the webBikeWorld  Motorcycle Helmet FAQ  and  Motorcycle Helmet Shapes list .

Anyway, the J-Cruise has a very comfortable (and removable) liner with the same plush fabric and padding used by Shoei for many years. The helmet fits and feels just like a full-face Shoei — and that’s a definite plus.

Like the GT Air, Shoei lists a 59-60 cm for the size large J-Cruise and that seems accurate. We also tried a size XL J-Cruise, which is listed as fitting a 61-62 cm head, and that seems accurate as well, so our assumption is that the helmet runs true to size.

The shell is fairly stiff, so there’s not as much play or stretch as there might be in some of the less expensive open-face helmets. So if you’re on the borderline, we’d suggest ordering according to the Shoei size charts.

The internal shape is biased towards the “Slight Narrow” part of the spectrum (as described in the webBikeWorld  Motorcycle Helmet Shapes page ), with narrower sides and lots of fore/aft room in the top.

Also similar to the GT Air is the design of the “bump” on the forehead to house the internal sun visor. This new Shoei design allows the full thickness of EPS in the liner to be maintained for safety and protection.

And the inclusion of the internal sun visor doesn’t intrude on the room inside the helmet either; in fact, there is plenty of forehead or front-to-back room up top with this design, so riders who experience forehead pressure may be pleased with the fit of the J-Cruise.

The EPS in the ear pockets has round cutouts for speakers but — like the GT Air — I’m not sure which speakers exactly will fit. Perhaps Shoei is considering a partnership with an intercom manufacturer? The ear pockets are very nicely lined and sized correctly.

Also like the GT Air, a “Round” head may have some problems fitting a pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses inside the J-Cruise, due to the narrower fit at the sides. But “Burn” has no problem at all.

Overall, we rate the Shoei J-Cruise as very comfortable and it should fit the average head shape.

Shoei J-Cruise Internal Shape

More information on helmet fit can be found in the webBikeWorld  Motorcycle Helmet FAQ  page, along with the chart that lists the  helmet weights  of webBikeWorld reviewed helmets and also by shape on the webBikeWorld  Motorcycle Helmet Shapes page .

Score : The Shoei J-Cruise gets an “Outstanding” rating for comfort and liner materials and padding and a comfortable fit.

Shoei J-Cruise Face Shield, Visibility and Internal Sun Visor

Buy Now revzilla jpcycles amazon

Shoei said that the CJ-2 face shield on the J-Cruise was completely redesigned, making it wider and taller than its predecessor on the J-Wing.

Having no experience with the J-Wing, we can’t comment on that. But there’s no doubt about it — the visibility from the J-Cruise is virtually unlimited, and that’s one of the main advantages of going to an open-face helmet.

It makes a big difference to be able to see so much more in front and below — especially for some cruiser owners whose rides have the speedometer and other instruments on the fuel tank.

The face shield provides near full-face coverage also in terms of wind protection and Shoei says it blocks 99% of UV light. The bottom of the face shield or visor is nearly even with the bottom of the chin; much better than most of the other open-face helmets we’ve reviewed.

The face shield also has a locking tab or button at the lower left that has no moving parts. The visor has a small molded indent that fits over a dimple in the receiver on the shell.

Push out slightly on the face shield and it pops out and can then be lifted upwards through its one detent travel. The single detent is right at the top of the travel, which keeps the face shield from closing if you’re traveling with “shields up”.

The clarity and optical quality of the face shield is outstanding; Shoei also said that a special molding process is used to eliminate distortions across the wide surface.

Ditto for the internal sun visor, which is optical grade sunglasses quality, claimed by Shoei to “exceed the ANSI Z80.3-2010 Standard for non-prescription eyewear”. This makes a real and noticeable difference.

The sun visor also rotates down far enough and it’s a very useful addition to the helmet, especially with that huge outward visibility provided by the big face shield. This is quite different from the Arai approach taken with the  Arai CT-Z (review) , which had some glare issues as we noted in the review.

The J-Cruise face shield is also ready to accept a  Pinlock anti-fog insert (review)  which, surprisingly, is not included, even at the lofty list price of the helmet. It’s also interesting to note that there’s a sticker on the J-Cruise face shield that reads “Daytime use only with Pinlock”.

The top of the face shield is molded with a lip that seals against the rubber gasket to prevent water from entering along the top of the eye port. The visor removal system is very easy to use and is illustrated in our video below.

Shoei J-Cruise Visibility

Score : The Shoei J-Cruise gets an “Outstanding” rating for the overall quality and operation of the face shield and the quality and operation of the internal sun visor.

Shoei J-Cruise Top Vent

Ventilation

Yet another similarity between the J-Cruise and the GT Air is the outstanding ventilation system provided by the similar-looking top vents on both helmets.

Inspecting the top vent on the J-Cruise doesn’t reveal anything unusual; in fact, the design appears at first glance to have a lower profile than many of the upper vent systems we’ve seen.

But it really works, and the air is directed down on to the rider’s head through two huge vent holes through the EPS. The liner is also specially designed to match the vent holes, and the system does the trick.

In fact, like the GT Air, the J-Cruise is one of the few helmets we’ve ever reviewed which flow so much air that we actually have to close the vent in cool weather!

That seems logical but it’s actually very rare, simply because most motorcycle top vent systems are pathetic, to say the least.

The flat slider on the top/front vent has two positions, as do the dual rear exhaust vents, which can be left open most of the time whether the front vent is open or closed.

The J-Cruise does have a lot of air flowing in from under the face shield, as expected for an open-face design. But the face shield is also very large and the air coming in from underneath doesn’t feel much different from the average full-face helmet without a chin curtain.

Shoei J-Cruise Ventilation

Score : The J-Cruise ventilation system gets an “Outstanding” overall rating overall.

Shoei J-Cruise Noise Levels

Open-face helmets are almost always louder than full-face helmets. The open bottom and sometimes too-short visors can create a lot of noise.

The large face shield and the solid shell design of the J-Cruise helps to reduce this to a minimum though, at least for an open-face helmet. We think the noise levels are somewhere near the average for full-face helmets, which is a positive in this case.

UClear Motion HDX-V Bluetooth System

UClear Motion HDX-V Bluetooth Helmet Audio System: Hands-On Review

When riding behind a windscreen with the top of the helmet out in the air flow, the ventilation still works well and it’s quieter than expected.

Some engine noise echoes up from underneath the front of the face shield and when wearing the J-Cruise on a motorcycle without a windscreen, the air noise around the bottom can be heard.

The vents are very quiet though, especially considering the amount of air flowing in. So overall, we rate the Shoei J-Cruise as quieter than average for an open-face helmet, especially when riding behind a windscreen.

Shoei J-Cruise Noise Levels

Note that our helmet evaluations are a combined effort of several riders over time on different types of motorcycles with and without windscreens.

Evaluators wear correctly fitted, high quality ear plugs (even when evaluating motorcycle intercom systems).

Always protect your hearing when riding a motorcycle. See the wBW  Earplug Reviews  for more information on choosing and wearing earplugs.

Note also that perceived noise levels will vary, depending on the individual.

Noise can be caused by many factors, including helmet fit, the type of motorcycle and windscreen, wind speed and direction and even the rider’s clothing.

For more information on helmet noise, visit the wBW  Motorcycle Helmet Noise  page.

Score : The Shoei J-Cruise gets an “Excellent” rating for noise control.

Helmet Weight

This Shoei J-Cruise in size large weighs 1610 grams (3 lbs., 8-3/4 oz.), roughly the equivalent of full-face helmets we’ve reviewed such as the size XL  Roof Boxer V8 (review)  (a flip-up) at 1609 grams; the  Shoei RF-1000 (review)  in size XL at 1610 grams and the  Arai Vector 2 (review)  in size L at 1611 grams.

The J-Cruise is the heaviest open-face helmet we have reviewed, with the  AFX FX-50 (review)  in size L weighing 1525 grams and the  Arai CT-Z (review)  in size L weighing in at 1564 grams.

More webBikeWorld.com  open face helmet weights can be found here  in the separate table for open-face helmets (which are not included in the graphic on the Helmet Weights page).

Otherwise, the balance is very good and, like the GT Air, considering the fact that an internal sun visor is included, the weight is reasonable.

Note also that all of the helmets reviewed on webBikeWorld have been weighed and the weights are available on the wBW  Motorcycle Helmet Weights  page, along with a chart that lists the helmets by weight and shape on the wBW  Motorcycle Helmet Shapes  page.

Score : The Shoei J-Cruise gets a “Very Good” rating for its weight and good balance.

Miscellaneous

The J-Cruise has a double D-ring chin strap retainer. The padding feel and length is comfortable.

Shoei J-Cruise Helmet Opinionator

The new Shoei J-Cruise has to be one of the nicest open-face designs we’ve reviewed. It feels substantial and other than the absence of a chin bar, it feels very similar to a Shoei full-face helmet — and that’s probably about the best compliment that can be given.

Touring riders or cruiser owners with a “Slightly Narrow” head shape should be very pleased with the J-Cruise.

And although we never got a chance to review its predecessor, the J-Wing, the J-Cruise is one nice open-face helmet and it’s also a helmet we would consider wearing on a regular basis.

Like other Shoei helmets, it’s expensive. But also like other Shoei helmets, it has all of the details that and a build quality that give one confidence, especially compared to some of the less expensive open-face helmets we’ve tried.

Owner Comments and Feedback

From “G.J.” (August 2013):  “This helmet doesn’t work for me as my ears begin to ache and continue down to the jawbone after about a half hour or so of riding I’ve never had a helmet do this before including other Shoei’s that I’ve owned.

I usually ride with ear plugs and even tried riding without ear plugs.

Plus, I also tried removing the ear inserts in the helmet but this didn’t work either and it doesn’t matter what kind of bike I ride naked or faired I still have problems with my ears hurting mostly on my right side from wearing this helmet.

No other helmet that I have gave me this kind of problem.

I have a similar Shark RSJ helmet that works just fine but doesn’t flow as much air which is why I bought the Shoei. The Shark was on closeout at 150.00 and I tend to wear this helmet more while the more expensive Shoei is back in a box sitting on a shelf.

Plus I found the Shoei noisy and the vents will whistle with the shield up. I rate this Shoei a big disappointment.

From “J.W.” (May 2013) : “In my one crash, I skidded across the pavement on my stomach, face down. The chin bar on my full face helmet was clearly abraded. Without a full face helmet, I would have sustained some very serious disfiguring injuries.

Open face helmets may be great but only if you know how you are going to land.”

There is no substitute for a full face helmet. Daily I see riders with cheap or no helmets riding 20000 dollar cruisers. If only they were educated to the risks. Your face is what you present to the world, why not put “your best forward”?

Actually it’s $30k+ cruisers. Don’t crash and you’ll be fine. Unless you’re riding too aggressively or not paying attention. Then by all means wear your full race getup.

Yeah ok Ken. Go buy a car mate.

Shoei J-Cruise II Review

The Shoei J-Cruise II is the updated version of the J-Cruise helmet. The helmet has a particularly unique design and comes with advanced tech found in Shoe’s modular and full-face helmets.

You’ll find a better field of view because of the wider visor, which also protects you from the sun. Also, it allows you to fit the Sena SRL2 BT kit, which is almost invisible when installed, offering you great communication. If you need deeper insights, you can check the complete Shoei J-Cruise 2 review below.

Outer shell and design

Fastening method, ventilation.

You’ll find the AIM shell construction tech in Shoei’s J-Cruise II. The AIM construction comprises organic and glass fiber offering a flexible, strong yet lightweight structure. The Shoei J-Cruise II is an open-face helmet with the benefits of a full-face helmet.

J-Cruise II comes with four shell sizes: MD, LG, XS-SM, XL-2XL, and weighs around 3.76 lbs. So, it’ll fit almost every head size and is lightweight too. When it comes to the color options, you’re going to get black, matte black, white, anthracite, and blue. So, there are a lot of good options available.

The fact that the helmet is Snell M2020D approved and DOT certified talks for itself. Both these standards mean a lot when it comes to helmet safety. So, when you buy a J-Cruise II, you can expect supreme safety.

Inner lining

When it comes to lining, Shoei J-Cruise II completely justifies the premium price. The J-Cruise II comes with an easily removable skull cap and cheek pads. Also, you’ll find press studs used for positioning and hidden tabs that allow a clean and snug fit around the neck.

Every lining material is a blend of silky fabric, fleece, and waffle weave. The silky fabric helps reduce friction, the fleece offers comfort and warmth, and the waffle-weave helps in better cooling and airflow. Also, the bottom of the check pad comes with a vinyl finishing which keeps the water at bay while driving in the rain.

And if that’s not enough, J-Cruise II has a sheathed strap with removable fleece. So, you can wash it whenever you feel like it. However, you won’t find any quick-release cheek pads as it’s easy to open an open-face helmet. Based on Shoei J-Cruise 2 reviews given by customers, the lining offers decent comfort and protection to the user.

shoei j cruise 2

The J-Cruise II comes with a micro ratchet fastener that offers five adjustment positions. You can adjust it further using the standard slide on your chin strap. Now, how can you beat that? You can easily lift the release tab for releasing the strap. It’s quite similar to releasing the seat belt in an aircraft.

When compared to the Double D-ring method, this method takes a bit more adjustment. However, once you adjust it, you can easily do the fastening even while wearing those winter gloves. Also, if you wish you wear balaclavas or buffs, there are enough adjustments available.

The CJ – 2 visor offers three detents:

  • Fully closed
  • Four-fifths closed

With a J-Cruise II, you’ll get pin-lock mounts for CJ-2 Pinlock Evo Insert. However, you need to purchase it separately. Also, there’s an inner sun-visor (QSV-2) which is retractable and protects you from the halo effect. So, you can expect decent protection from the sun.

The J-Cruise II features water and windproof visor seal. It’s definitely better than the previous variant, as Shoei has redesigned the visor seal in this variant.

You may think, why would an open-face helmet require ventilation. But it’s quite important. It’s because when you lock the full-face visor, very little air enters the helmet.

However, you’ll find ample ventilation with this helmet. Three top vents offer a 3-position slide action: close, open, and midpoint. These vents work pretty well in coordination with the exhaust vent found on the back.

Sometimes, you may find a quick mist buildup on cold mornings. However, a pin-lock insert will help you deal with it easily.

For an open face variant, J-Cruise II is surprisingly quiet. What’s the reason? Well, it’s because of the chin spoiler and compound curves. So, if you keep the visor down, you won’t experience unnecessarily loud noises.

In case you partially or completely adjust the visor, there’ll be quite a lot of noise, obviously. However, if you consider my advice, wearing earplugs while driving will solve this problem. So, in terms of noise, you can rely on this helmet.

One of the most striking features of J-Cruise II is its ability to fit the SRL Bluetooth intercom system by Sena. So, you can stay connected with fellow riders or maybe your wife on the go. However, you’ll have to purchase the Bluetooth communication system separately.

Shoei has never disappointed us when it comes to helmets. And Cruise II is enough to prove that fact. It offers everything a bike rider needs, whether you’re on a small route or a large one. From safety, comfort, and quality to communication, Shoei J-Cruise II comes with it all.

And this is everything you can expect from a good helmet. So, if you’re looking for a premium helmet that protects you from impact, sun, and air and is equipped with the latest tech, you must opt for Shoei J-Cruise II. I hope this Shoei J-Cruise II helmet review was informative enough to help you make the right choice.

  • The sun visor offers decent protection from the sun and also allows enough space for you to wear goggles
  • The helmet offers great ventilation which makes it good for sunny days
  • Some users find the helmet quite heavy and bulky
  • The helmet is not as safe as a full-face helmet.

Shoei J-Cruise II review: the 3/4 that thinks it’s a full face helmet.

Shoei-J-Cruise-II-featured

Page Contents

Shoei J-Cruise II review expensive but quality open face helmet.

Shoei’s J-Cruise helmet has been around for a few years now and has built a reputation as being a high quality open face 3/4 helmet, but kind of like an open face that thinks it’s a full face.

shoei-j-cruise-II-gloss-white-front-view

That’s because Shoei designed it to offer pretty well all the functionality of a full face helmet , just without the chin bar.

The original J-Cruise was very well received with hardly any areas of weakness reported. So now it’s on with that difficult follow up: to try and replace the J-Cruise with a helmet that’s even better than the original.

So, Shoei’s taken that first helmet and tried to make the J-Cruise II that bit better in what seems to be more or less every area. They say it’s slightly lighter, better venting, has improved aero, a better sealing main shield and a slightly deeper sun visor.

But then they all say something along those lines whenever a helmet’s launched. So, here’s what the Shoei J-Cruise II is actually like – taken from the comments and opinions of riders around the web who actually own one.

  • Fiberglass composite AIM Shell
  • Four shell sizes (that’s lots)
  • Drop down sun visor
  • Integrated bluetooth : SRL/SRL2
  • Pinlock ready shield ( Pinlock not included)
  • Micrometric fastener
  • Sizes XS-XXL
  • Expect to pay $550-$600

Overall/Summary

If you look at our overall star rating of the Shoei J-Cruise II at the bottom of the page, you’ll find it hasn’t scored amazingly high. That’s probably because one of the factors we rate helmets on is value for money – and by anyone’s measure, the J-Cruise II isn’t the best value around.

And because it’s an open face helmet , it’s going to drop points on the safety rating too.

shoei-j-cruise-II-aglero-helmet-black-yellow-side-view

Having said that, with it’s AIM shell that usually scores well in SHARP safety tests and a good rating for noise attenuation (for an open face helmet at any rate) it’s still one of the highest scores we’ve given a helmet without a chin bar. Which is saying something.

That’s because, if money’s no object and you want a 3/4 helmet, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is a fabulous helmet. It’s superbly constructed. It uses Shoei’s tried and tested shell tech. And that double visor system’s excellent – although it really should come with a Pinlock antifog included at this price.

And owner after owner that we came across loves their J-Cruise II.

Overall then, if you’re looking for a high quality open face helmet that acts as if it were a full face in terms of comfort, aero and features, then you needn’t look any further than the Shoei J-Cruise. It’s really very good.

(more about helmet safety)

As usual when looking at safety with an open face helmet, we’ve gotta start off by saying something along the lines of ‘it won’t be that protective… there’s no chin bar so if you come off, things could get messy.’

There, think that about covers it. It’s an open face helmet  so don’t expect it to stop your chin/face/nose taking a battering if you have an off.

If you really need the freedom of an open face helmet but want something that’ll protect you as well, then how about checking out one of these modular helmets from our top 10 flip-front helmets list instead?

Nope? OK, open face it is then.

In that case, the J-Cruise looks to be about as protective as you’re gonna get from an open face helmet. Not only do the sides come down nice and low to give you some protection lower down around your chin, but Shoei’s AIM shell uses the same helmet tech that’s used in some of their full face helmets.

shoei-j-cruise-II-aglero-black-white-rear-view

It’s not their most technologically advanced shell construction – that’s their AIM+ shells. But it is a solid helmet shell material/construction, evidenced by other AIM helmets (admittedly the ECE version of the helmet, not the DOT) scoring pretty well when SHARP tests them (strangely Snell has never certified an AIM Shoei – just their AIM+ helmets).

For example, the ECE Neotech II has an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. So, given that every AIM shelled Shoei scored a four star rating (apart from the original GT Air which scored three) we’d have to say that, were SHARP to test the shell of the J-Cruise II (which they won’t because they only test helmets with chin bars so far) then I guess it probably would score 4 stars. Which is a good rating.

Of course, it’s not just the shell that’s at work here. It’s also that shock absorbing liner underneath.

And in the case of the J-Cruise II, it’s multi denisity liner as found on most of their range nowadays. So that should do the job nicely.

It’s also great to see that it’s manufactured in four different shell sizes . That’s just what you want to see with a premium priced helmet like the J-Cruise 2 and means the helmet you buy should be well optimized for fit, size and safety. So that means there’s one shell size each covering fitment sizes XS-S, M, L and XL-XXL.

shoei-j-cruise-II-Adagio-black-red-motorbike-helmet-side-view

Other than the helmet shell, you get optically correct face shield and sun visor, there to reduce distortion and the sun visor to prevent dazzling on sunny days.

And the main shield’s Pinlock-ready (Pinlock not included unfortunately) so fitting a Pinlock should pretty well prevent fogging (see shield section below).

The J-Cruise II also uses a metal micrometric fastener ; which are particularly easy to use – just always ensure the strap adjustor’s tightened up from time to time so your helmet doesn’t have the chance to come loose.

All in all then, the J-Cruise II does a good job of making a protective helmet; just not anywhere near as protective as a full face or the safest modulars.

Helmet Noise

(more about helmet noise).

OK, so the J-Cruise II is an open face that thinks it’s a full face. But open face helmets are always noisy helmets right, what with all that large area to let wind rattle around and noise creep in?

Thing is, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the J-Cruise II.

It’s fair to say that Shoei has made quite a bit of effort with the aero of the J-Cruise II, wind tunnel sculpting it to reduce drag and hence noise. They’ve also pushed some ear pads inside and made the shield fit tighter, slightly re-shaping it to divert the air. All of which should reduce noise when you’re riding.

I also suspect many J-Cruise owners’ expectations are pretty low in terms of noise suppression. I mean, you buy an open face helmet so you’re expecting it to be a bit windy and noisy, right?

shoei-j-cruise-II-Adagio-black-white-motorbike-helmet-front-view

But having said that, noise perception is always going to be just that… perception. It’s what you think that matters. And in the case of the J-Cruise II the vast majority of owners we found say they’re more than happy with the noise levels on the move, and that it’s super quiet for an open face helmet.

Of course, you need to ensure you get the fitment right in the first place. With the J-Cruise II that means you need to have a medium oval shaped head – and if you’re between sizes, make sure you buy the size up as we’ve heard from owners who found their helmets to be too tight when they were on the cusp.

But provided you get the size that fits and you’ve the right shaped head, then it seems like the J-Cruise II is one of the quietest open face helmets out there.

In comparison to the quietest helmets overall (including full face helmets), it probably ranks around average. But that’s very quiet for an open face and a great performance by Shoei’s engineers.

Ventilation

(more about helmet ventilation).

Ventilation is one of the key areas Shoei has worked on with the J-Cruise II. You’d have thought that because it’s an open face helmet, you’d get pretty much all the ventilation you need without really trying.

Shoei_J-Cruise_Airflow

Couple that with the fact that the old J-Cruise helmet was highly rated for ventilation anyhow, even with just that single vent up top.

But Shoei hasn’t rested on their laurels. They’ve reworked the helmet shell to make it more compact and with better aero properties and have stuck 3 big vents on the top just to make sure a ton of air gets through.

Shoei reckons everything’s somewhere around 20-30% improved from the old helmet in terms of ventilation. Which is nice.

What’s not quite so great apparently, is that the corresponding rear air vent is actually just a couple of small holes, thereby apparently restricting the air flow a little overall, according to one owner.

Still, most owners agree that the head venting on the J-Cruise II is great and lets plenty of air in and over your head just when you want it. And if things get colder, those three vents are all 3-way adjustable with a half-open and closed position too, all operated with big glove-friendly sliders.

(more about face shields)

The main shield on the J-Cruise 2 is massive, giving you a great view of the road ahead, your clocks and pretty well all around you, even when the shield’s down.

It’s an optically correct shield too, which is useful with the shield being so large. And it’s quick change too, so you can pull it off quickly simply by opening the shield then pushing a lever either side and pulling it free.

Just like the old J-Cruise helmet, it uses a super low tech peg and hole lock to keep the shield closed. Even though it’s a system that’s as old as the hills (and probably older!), it seems like it works just fine because we didn’t find anyone complaining about it online. Job done.

A couple of useful links…

– All our Shoei helmets reviews –

– Open face helmet reviews –

Surprisingly for an open face helmet, lots of owners reckoned they can have a problem with fogging. I guess that’s what happens when you make such a large and well sealed shield on a helmet – even if it’s an open face.

That shouldn’t be a particular problem on the J-Cruise II as Shoei has made the shield Pinlock ready. Bizarrely, they haven’t included a Pinlock insert free in the box (like AGV has with their $200 AGV K3 for example – ahem) which is taking the piss a little on such an expensive lid.

Shoei_J-Cruise II_Intercom

Still, at least there is the option for a Pinlock available I guess.

Making a Pinlock Evo available for the J-Cruise II is arguably tacit admittance that it is prone to some fogging. So too is the addition of a cracked-open city riding position for the shield – usually there to let more air in and help with defogging.

Then again, stick any piece of cold polycarbonate in front of your face on a cold or humid day and it’s probably going to fog up, so it’s good to know Shoei’s taken steps to address it.

What also good to know is that Shoei says their polycarb shield cuts out 99% of UV rays. Polycarbonate’s known for cutting out at least 95% anyway, but it’s always good to see an exact figure.

(more about sun visors)

The same figure’s quoted for the sun visor too – another 99% protection against UV. And Shoei’s apparently got that US ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard which means it should give about as much protection as a pair of shades – and includes a test to ensure it won’t burst into flames. Which is always good to know!

shoei-j-cruise-II-matt-blue-open-face-helmet-front-view

Shoei have made the sun visor a bit longer than the old J-Cruise too. That’s often welcome as there’s always a few folks saying their sun visor doesn’t drop down low enough (just like we found with the J-Cruise I).

And while the placing of the sun visor’s slider is slightly unusual (necessitated by the location of the panel for the integrated bluetooth controller) the action’s nice and smooth and, once you get used to where to find it, it works well.

Comfort and Sizing

(more about comfort and sizing).

The J-Cruise 2 is available in sizes XS-XXL and comes in four shell sizes.

It uses Shoei’s 3D Max-Dry liner. The 3D refers to the 3D laser cut foam that goes inside, and Max-Dry is Shoei’s regular interior designed to absorb and wick sweat away twice as fast as nylon does (which doesn’t seem much of a bold claim since nylon’s basically plastic!).

Still, Max Dry liners are highly regarded and Shoei does make a nice and comfortable liner.

shoei-J-Cruise-II-helmet-matt-deep-grey-side-view

Like other premium helmet makers, you can also buy different thicknesses of cheekpads to help tailor the fit if you find it’s not quite right or loosens off over time.

And if you wear glasses, there’s also a glasses groove in there so the arms of your glasses won’t press into your head.

Overall, owners reckon that the J-Cruise II is a very comfortable helmet . In fact we didn’t find a single owner saying otherwise.

Obviously, you have to get the sizing right in the first place (check out our fitting guide ) and the word is if you find you’re between sizes with the J-Cruise II, you’re best opting for a size up as a size down will be too tight.

Other than that, the quality and overall feel of the comfort liner is spot on.

Other stuff – bluetooth, weight, glasses, aero & buffeting, build quality, warranty

If you’re looking to fit a bluetooth headset to your J-Cruise II, it’s designed to work with the SCL 1 or 2 set that’s been developed by Sena and Shoei to integrate with their helmets .

That means there’s a place to stick the controller on the left hand side (there’s a small panel on the bottom edge to remove) and the battery pack slots into a panel at the bottom rear. There’s also plenty of space for speakers and a boom microphone.

shoei-J-Cruise-II-helmet-top-view

Shoei managed to reduce the weight of the J-Cruise II over the old helmet by around 100g. It’s not a lot, but it means the J-Cruise II weighs around 3.1lbs (1.4kg), down from the 3.3lbs of the old helmet.

It’s far from being the lightest open face helmet out there but it’s OK – and a few owners reckon the weight adds to its sense of quality too.

If you’re a glasses wearer, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is great for glasses . There’re glasses grooves inside and a several owners said there’s plenty of space to drop down the sun visor and main shield without interfering with your glasses. And because they’re both optically correct, there isn’t much noticeable distortion even though you’re effectively peering through three panes of plastic.

Shoei reckoned they’ve done a good deal of work on the aero of the helmet to reduce lift, drag and buffeting. That might be measurable in the wind tunnel but I’m not sure owners find much difference. Having said that, we didn’t come across any complaints either so it looks like the aero works just fine.

The build quality’s rated as excellent too. Lots of owners say just how fantastic quality the helmet is – the finish, the internals – you name it, they like it. Which is one of the reasons you go for a premium helmet like a Shoei: they take the time to get things right.

And it means they can happily offer a 5 year warranty on the manufacture of all their helmets.

First up, and in a similar vein to the J-Cruise II – and even more practical – is the Nolan N40-5 GT. It’s a supremely versatile modular helmet that can be converted into a jet by fully removing the chin bar. The best of both worlds!

sena savage helmet with short peak

Or what about the Sena Savage ? It’s a fiberglass open face helmet that comes with a bluetooth communicator pre-installed. OK it’s a reasonably basic bluetooth, but most owners find it’s fine. And it’s a decent wodge cheaper than the J-Cruise II. Mind you, you’d have to make do with a snap on visor.

shoei j cruise s

The fiberglass Shoei Jo has one built in tho. It also uses the same AIM shell as the J-Cruise II though the Jo’s much lighter and cheaper. It’s more back to basics too.

shoei j cruise s

Finally, what about the Bell Broozer . It really looks the part and it has a fully removable but protective chin bar for when you want to get a lick on. It comes with both a clear and dark visor, weighs about the same as the J-Cruise II but comes in around half the price.

Shoei J Cruise II Review

by Alex Meyer

Helmet Labs may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. This comes at no additional cost to you, and all the prices and availability are accurate at the time of publishing.

An overdue update to Shoei’s 2013 J-Cruise, the J-Cruise II marries all that we loved from the original with seven years worth of tech innovation.

As with the original Cruise model, the missing chin bar puts this jet-style 3/4 helmet in a sort of functional “no-man’s land” — it has a full face feel without the added protection. It may even seem impractical to some riders, imperfect as both an open face and a full face helmet.

Once you start to break down the quality Shoei put into this helmet, you start to understand that it is not just for scooter riders. Sure, the jet helmet is not built for sports bikes, but daily urban riders can find exceptional value in its premium comfort and unique fashion.

Shape and materials

The J-Cruise II fits most riders with its intermediate oval shape, slightly longer back to front and narrower down the sides. Available in four outer shell sizes (XS-SM, MD, LG, XL-2XL), the helmet fits well, but its deeper cavity may require a size up.

A carryover from the original J-Cruise, the Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) design of the shell features high-quality composites blended with organic and glass fibers, giving it strength and flexibility.

The shell design also helps with the reduced weight, which comes in at just over 3.8 lbs in a large. This is about ¼ lb heavier than the original model, a minor deviation that is offset by a balanced, stress-reducing shell.

A notable change in the newer model is the sportier, aerodynamic design, a natural result of design and compatibility enhancements. Extra vent intakes add function to a slick look while the rear spoiler reportedly reduces lift and drag. This spoiler, in truth, is also one of three key additions to a comm integration for Shoei’s proprietary Sena SRL2 Bluetooth system.

The J-Cruise II is available in five colors — black, matte black, white, matte blue metallic and anthracite metallic.

Things I liked

  • Lightweight yet durable AIM outer shell.
  • Superior removable and replaceable interior comfort features.
  • Enhanced air intakes.
  • Longer face shield and aerodynamic features deflect air and reduce noise.

Things I don’t like

  • Poor compatibility with some comm systems.
  • Impractical for some riders.

Overall comfort

The interior components are about as comfy as can be, all removable to wash and swap out to customize your fit. Cheek pads are well-designed and supportive, with easy-on/easy-off studs to detach and swap out if you need a better fit or an audio attachment.

In general, the helmet can offer a snug yet unrestricting fit for just about any rider.

The center headlining is constructed of lightweight, antibacterial and moisture-wicking 3D MaxDry material in an open weave to promote airflow and added cooling. Meanwhile, the conforming cheek pads and neckroll use soft fleece for warmth and plush comfort. These are covered on the exterior with a sealed vinyl material, making it feel sturdier and keeping water from being absorbed into the helmet if you get caught in the rain.

The chin strap moves from a double-D ring fastener to a ratchet strap, which some find easier for removal, especially with gloves. This strap is outfitted with a removable, washable fleece cover that adds a nice layer of comfort.

Audio takes a new course with the J-Cruise II, with the overall design being built specifically for Sena’s SRL2 BT comm system, similar to the Neotec 2 and GT Air 2. The back spoiler can house the battery, while removable plastic cheek sections on the exterior can be swapped out to fit common pieces. This creates a seamless look, free of awkward, exposed audio components.

The Sena setup is definitely a premium, versatile system to match a premium helmet. However, you may already have a system you like and want to carry it over to the J-Cruise II. If that’s the case, you may have some trouble installing it on the new helmet.

Adding in another system may require adjustments on where you place the unit on the side, though a sticky mount will likely solve the problem in any case. Thankfully, there are no worries on the speaker placement for the SRL2 or any other aftermarket set. Cutouts hidden behind soft interior padding allow for speakers and wires to be tucked out of sight.

The visor improves what was already fairly solid visibility from the first series.

A slightly longer shield provides additional wind protection, which is further enhanced by the smart edge design. Its weightier bottom edge offers not only better durability but also helps reduce buffeting at speed. This pairs with an improved airtight seal design to prevent moisture and wind from entering where it does not belong.

With many visors, face shield lifting from wind gusts at higher speeds is a potential concern. Shoei did a great job with the detente stops in the J-Cruise II, giving it three secure positions that are both tight-to-lock and easy-to-adjust.

The three positions are full up, full down or the new “slightly up” state. The latter position, also called first position, is especially helpful for defogging the visor and ventilating. The tight hold allows you to cruise at low speeds perfectly fine in the unlocked first position without worrying about rattling or a flapping shield.

In terms of switching visor positions, a simple positive push release makes it easy to toggle between fully closed and first position.

Swapping out shields is easy with Shoei’s Quick Release Self Adjusting mechanism. Levers on either side release the visor, allowing you to quickly change into different clear and tinted options.

It is worth noting that Shoei does not include Pinlocks with the CJ-2 face shield that comes with the J-Cruise II. If you are upgrading from the original model, the same insert will work. But with the antifogging functions in the new locking positions, you may not even need this addition. If you ride in colder climates, however, the insert is nice for demisting with a locked down shield.

Finally, the J-Cruise II still features the drop-down sun visor, albeit with a few design changes. With 5mm added to the length, slight adjustment to the nose cut-out and smaller cavity, the J-Cruise II is a bump in comfort, function and noise-reduction. The visor can also easily be swapped out so you can choose between smoke and yellow options.

For a ¾ helmet, the J-Cruise II is an impressively quiet option. Much of this is due to the face shield design and the comfortable fit of the interior padding.

The one major limitation on noise-reduction is the open chin that lets air inside. Fortunately, the wide curve of the longer face shield helps divert airflow, while the new upper seal further keeps air out.

Of course, with an open or slightly open shield, you are going to let in more air and subsequently more noise. Interestingly, the noise is fairly tolerable in that slightly open position, especially since you will likely be using that for urban riding when you need to keep it fog-free.

Ventilation

There are some new ventilation additions and enhancements that may seem redundant on an open face helmet. But with the J-Cruise II shield boasting such a quality outer seal both top and bottom, you will be thankful for the added airflow on hot days.

Three top intake vents pair with a rear passive vent to provide strong air flow when it gets hot and stuffy.

The two side vents are one of two ventilation upgrades from the original J-Cruise, adding 30 percent to the helmet’s intake, according to the manufacturer. The rear exhaust also enjoyed a 20 percent increase in airflow to keep up.

With three different open positions — open, half-open, closed — the intake vents provide versatility for controlling the climate on hot or cold days. Being able to independently adjust each vent also helps manage noise levels.

The second enhancement, the four slightly deeper EPS channels, is a little more subtle but an improvement nonetheless. Paired with the extra top intakes, the airflow on the interior goes a long way toward keeping cool with a closed face shield.

For all its design adjustments, a chinless open face just does not seem as fully protective as a full face helmet. That being said, from a relative standpoint, those design features that contributed to comfort and noise reduction also help the rider stay safer than most ¾ models.

The J-Cruise II is DOT and ECE certified, but it has not undergone the Snell or Sharp ratings. From where we stand though, Shoei always prioritized safety. For an open face design, this gets about as close to full face protection as you can get.

The J-Cruise II is a pricier model, and its position between a full face and open face design may be off-putting if you have your preference. But if you value comfort, temperature control and Shoei’s reputation for quality, this is a great choice for everyday riding.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 vs Arai SZ-R VAS Jet Helmet Road Test and Video

How does the Shoei J-Cruise 2 stack up against the Arai SZ-R VAS? Find out in today’s Champion Helmets road test!

The Shoei J-Cruise 2 and the Arai SZ-R VAS , known as the Arai Ram-X in the US, are two giants of the open face helmet world, both are premium top tier helmets in the jet helmet field. Both of these helmets have impressive pedigrees with the Shoei J-Cruise II coming from the already popular J-Cruise and the Arai SZR VAS dates back all the way to the late 1980s with frequent additions to the SZ model in between. Both are also offering the best of their respective companies with the SZ-R VAS sharing features that you also have on the Arai RX-7V , their top racing helmet. The Shoei JCruise 2 be coming in at a recommended retail price of about 480 Euros, or about 530 US Dollars, while the Arai SZRVAS is about 600 Euros, or around 660 US Dollars, so that’s a 220 Euro difference already. These helmets will also compete with the Schuberth M1 Pro . So, let’s get going.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 Specs

First, just a few quick facts for the Shoei J-Cruise Two . The J-Cruise II’s aerodynamic shell is made of Shoei’s Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) for advanced shell strength, wind noise reduction, and weight reduction, it’ll come in weighing at about 1370 grams for weight in a size M. This helmet is also coming in at a decent 3 outer shell sizes, and has an intermediate oval head shape. For ventilation, there are 3 top air intakes, which are all adjustable, and 2 outlets out the back to let warm air escape. The visor is distortion free and is pinlock prepared though the anti-fog insert is not in the box, but it is anti-scratch. The Shoei JCruiseII also comes with an integrated sun visor operated by a slide on the helmet’s side to help stop UV rays. Lastly, for the lining, it’s removable, washable, anti-bacterial, fits glasses, and comfortable. This helmet model is also ready for the addition of the SENA SRL 2 Bluetooth Communication system with the addition of speaker spaces behind the cheek pads. Now, let’s see how it does on the road.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 Road Test

Just a quick reminder for how we measure our road tests. We took the helmet’s internal temperature, in degrees C, through a thermometer placed in the central ventilation channel. For noise, we used a decibel meter with readings based on a microphone near our rider’s ear. Lastly we used an anemometer to take the day’s average wind speed.

We tested the J-Cruise 2 out on long stretches of highway at 130 km/h. The day’s average wind speed ranged from 110 km/h to 130 km/h. The day’s external temperature was about 5 degrees C, while the helmet’s internal temperature was about 6 degrees C, so that’s a difference of 1 degree Celsius. Lastly, for noise, the helmet came in at about 106 decibels, which is loud, but this is expected with a jet helmet.

It was a cold wintry day but we still found the J-Cruise 2 performed very well and it’s ventilation and EPS grooves already proved to be working well. Though most of you won’t be riding with jet helmets out in the winter, the temperatures speak for themselves, it’s great to see this reconfigured ventilation system already showing its merit and it will do well for the warmer riding season. For a brief note, we actually found the Shoei slightly more comfortable in the Arai SZ-R VAS and the sunshade came in especially handy with the day’s low winter sun, which produces a lot of glare.

Our rider also found the helmet to be aerodynamically stable, which is also a good thing for the J-Cruise 2.

Our rider found the helmet was comfortable and very user friendly in terms of both the visor and the sun visor. He also said it ventilated well and the biggest failing was that the J Cruise 2 did not come with the anti-fog pinlock insert in the box. It was also a noisy helmet, though this is not surprising for a jet helmet.

Arai SZ-R VAS Facts

Now, just a few specs on the Arai SZ-R VAS . This face helmet from Arai is made of Arai’s Peripherally Belted complex laminate construction with super fibre laminates, this shows Arais focus on design improving the protection offered by the helmet. This helmet also comes in 3 shell sizes, has an intermediate oval head fit, and does well for weight, weighing about 1350 grams in a size M. The SZ-R VAS also comes from Arai with an advanced ventilation system, you’re getting three vents in the top of the helmet, inspired by the Arai RX7V’s ventilation system and this hot air will come outside and rear exhausts in the helmet. The top two exhausts can be opened and closed as well using two small switches. The visor features Arai's latest VAS design improving on previous mechanisms. The visor is pinlock prepared, but the insert needs to be purchased separately as well as the small sun shield face shield. For the liner, the SZ-R VAS has a removable, washable, and anti-bacterial liner, and it fits glasses too. Now, let’s see how it stacks up against the Shoei.

Arai SZ-R VAS Road Test

We took this helmet out on the same winter day, and we still had a bit of sun. Our rider travelled at about 130 km/h on long stretches of highway during our test. For the day’s wind speed, it ranged from about 110 km/h to 130 km/h. The day’s outside temperature was a cool 7 degrees Celsius while the helmet’s internal temperature was about 6 degrees, so a difference of 1 degree, which is excellent. For noise, the SZ-R VAS is a jet helmet so it is noisy, with about 107 decibels, though this is 1 decibel louder than the Shoei J-Cruise II, this again shows that there is a reason why we call these jet helmets.

Our rider found the Arai SZ-R VAS to be a very comfortable helmet and you could feel the quality of the liner. He also found it to be slightly quieter than the Shoei J-Cruise 2 jet helmet though it was one decibel louder. However, the biggest let down considering the high price of this helmet was it requires a drop down sun shade to be purchased separately and the pinlock insert lens is also not included. This sun shade would have come in very useful on a day like today since there was a low winter sun and while a sun shade would have rounded this helmet out nicely, it was lacking. Now, onto our stars.

Champion Helmets Ranking

For material, since the SZ-R VAS is made of Arai’s complex laminate construction and comes in 3 shell sizes, that’s 4 stars. For the Shoei, the shell is Shoei’s AIM material and comes in 3 shell sizes, so that’s another 4 stars. For weight, since the Arai is a light helmet weighing at 1350 grams that’s 5 stars and since the J-Cruise 2 is coming in at 1370 that also another 5. For the visor, since both the Arai and the Shoei feature a pinlock prepared visor but no insert in the box, that’s 3 stars. For ventilation, since the Arai helmet was 1 degree cooler than the outside, which is an excellent result, that’s a full 5 stars. While the J-Cruise 2 was 1 degree hotter, so that’s 4 stars. Unsurprisingly, for noise, both helmets only get one star. Lastly, for comfort, we found the SZ-R VAS to be very comfortable, leading to 4 stars for both helmets though our rider found the Shoei to be slightly more comfortable. This brings the SZ-R VAS to a total of 3.5 stars at 27 Euros/star. While this is a decent result, this is a high Euro/star rating considering it doesn’t come with a pinlock insert lens and you have to buy the sun shade separately. However, you are getting the enhanced Arai safety factor. For the Shoei, the J-Cruise 2 gets a total of 3.5 stars at 23 Euros/star, which is much lower than the Arai and shows a better value for money with the integrated sun visor included with the helmet, as well as a lower overall price.

If you’d like to purchase the Shoei J-Cruise 2 or the Arai SZR VAS , then make sure to head to ChampionHelmets.com where we have a lowest price guarantee and great bundle deals!

Both the Shoei J-Cruise 2 and the Arai SZ-R VAS are top of the range jet helmets. While they’re both certainly priced as such, their comfort level also reflects this. However, with a Euro per star rating of 23, a lower overall price, and an integrated sun visor, the Shoei J-Cruise 2 appears to be offering a better deal while the Arai is offering more premium safety and ventilation aspects. The Introduction to Rostov

Rostov the great.

View on Rostov churches - photo by Ksenia Smirnova / flickr.com/photos/ksenia-sm/15670452466/

The guide proposes that every tourist will pay five rubles to get in. The keeper says he'll open it. You may feel like following the group to have a look on Rostov from high.

Around the white Kremlin walls, the whole town is made out of old stones. The streets are large, the walls imposing, and the ruins of ancient trading arcades let imagine how great and powerful was once Rostov Veliky.

Kremlin of Rostov the Great - photo by Alexxx Malev / flickr.com/photos/alexxx-malev/8128338472/

When you get out of the Kremlin, if you walk along it to the back, you'll find paths through pretty gardens to the calm lake. On the grassy beach a little guy may propose you to rent a barge. For a couple of hours it can be nice to row to another more hidden beach, as the water is so inviting, or to the fairy tale monastery, on the shore to the right. There's also a seducing house, just on the shore where an artist and his mother made a little enamel museum upstairs and arranged half of the basement in a cozy apartment for people.

After eating a nice bliny (pancakes), seeping a sweet home-made medovukha (honey alcohol), you might feel like the people you meet: smiley and relaxed. Here they seem to have nothing to fight against, they have nature very close, and they can easily get out of their village, with any direct train to Moscow. So Rostov is a nice green town made out of old white stones very close to a deep blue lake.
