Buying a Mexico Sim Card: Everything You Need to Know in 2024

A Mexico sim card is an essential purchase for your trip to Mexico. Not only will purchasing one help you to stay in touch with your family and friends back home, it will make planning your route and getting around Mexico much, much easier.

While having a local number can be useful in itself (you never know when you may need to call local friends, reserve a table at a restaurant, call your hotel etc), the main draw of purchasing a Mexican sim card is for its data. 

Free wifi is not widely available in Mexico and while many hotels and resorts do have complimentary wifi available for guests, not all cafes, restaurants, and bars too. While traveling is a nice way to detach, if you don’t have a local sim card, it can be frustrating if you are dependent on finding a place with local wifi to be able to call an Uber, search bus/train/flight timetables, use Google Maps, check your emails, reserve a hotel, etc. 

A Mexico sim card makes everything a lot easier. Fortunately, sim cards with call and data bundles are very affordable here and you can opt to buy either a physical sim or an E-sim depending on your needs and preferences. 

This article has been written by a British Travel Writer living in Mexico (Me!) I have been living here for years so rest assured, you are in good hands here 😉 In this post, we will run through the different Mexico sim cards available, their costs, and any practical things you should know. It is updated periodically and all prices are current as of January 2024.

Buying a Mexico Sim Card in 2024

Buying a Mexico sim card is easy and affordable. You can buy a sim card at a convenience store, phone shop, or airport in a matter of minutes and you don’t have to trail into a designated phone store with all of your ID and a bunch of paperwork in tow either like you do as a tourist in some countries. 

In terms of actual Mexican phone companies, you have three main options to choose from. Namely, these are Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T. 

Previously, there were two additional providers: Nextel and Unefon. They have since been acquired by AT&T. 

Telcel is the largest and arguably the best. Their packages are comprehensive and affordable and their coverage far exceeds that of their competitors. 

Separately, you can also consider purchasing an esim card for Mexico. Airalo and Holafly are two great companies that offer decently-priced Mexico E-sims. 

An E-sim is a convenient choice because this is a digital sim that you can purchase online and activate digitally by either scanning a QR code or following some brief instructions to change your phone settings. It is good because it means that you don’t have to take your usual sim out of your phone and then worry about losing it during your trip etc. 

Another option is to buy a portable wifi hub device which can be a good shout if you are working remotely. 

As I mentioned, I have been living in Merida, Mexico for the last two years. I personally use Telcel as my phone provider in Mexico but let’s take a look at all the different choices available. 

Current Mexico Sim Card Bundles in 2024

The current bundle options available for Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T are detailed below. These details are correct as of January 2024. Do keep in mind that rates and offers may change. Occasionally, providers will also offer promotional deals and introductory rates. 

Telcel Mexico sim card rates 

A Telcel sim card is 80 pesos ($4). You will have to pay this fee at all Oxxo, 7/11, and other convenience stores. Some Telcel stores may charge you for this, others may not. Similarly, some may or may not charge you an additional activation fee – welcome to Mexico! 

The currently available offers for Telcel mobile bundles are detailed below. These packages are called ¨paquetes amigo sin limite¨ aka ¨unlimited friend packages¨.

• 100 pesos – 1.3GB and unlimited social media for 15 days
• 150 pesos – 2GB and unlimited social media for 26 days
• 200 pesos – 3GB and unlimited social media for 30 days
• 300 pesos – 4GB and unlimited social media for 30 days
• 500 pesos – 6GB and unlimited social media for 30 days 

Data can be used in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. If you do not use all of your bundle by the end of the specified period, it cannot be carried over. The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico. If you purchase a plan costing more than 150 pesos, you can also enjoy 500 MB of free music (whether that is via Spotify or Apple Music).

At the time of writing (January 2024), Telcel is also offering a promotion where you can enjoy double data when you sign up for one of their sim cards. This promotion appears to have been going on for quite a while and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon. (So you can get even more data with Telcel compared to other providers!)

Movistar rates 

• 50 pesos – 1GB of data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 14 days plus unlimited Whatsapp for 30 days
• 100 pesos – 4GB data, unlimited social media, calls, Whatsapp, and texts for 30 days
• 150 pesos – 5GB data, unlimited social media, calls, Whatsapp, and texts for 30 days

A Movistar sim card costs around 50-60MXN pesos in Mexico. However, some stores in Cancun, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya have waivered this for tourists so it depends on which store you go to. (Although 50 pesos is just $ 2.70 USD).  It is a bit confusing because the sign-up rates for Movistar are very different from what you get when you recharge. (To entice you to use them from the beginning, of course!)

Recharge rates and offers for Movistar Mexico sim cards

The recharge prices and packages offered by Movistar Mexico are as per the below:

• 50 pesos – 500mb data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 7 days
• 80 pesos – 2GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 12 days
• 100 pesos – 2GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 15 days
• 150 pesos – 3.5GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 26 days

AT&T rates 

• 100 pesos – 1.5GB, 1.5GB video, 1GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 14 days
• 150 pesos – 2.3GB, 2.3GB video, 1.5GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 25 days
• 200 pesos – 3GB, 3GB video, 2GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 30 days

The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico. An AT&T sim card doesn’t have an additional cost for the physical sim, so the price that you pay includes both the data/call plan and the sim.

When you do and don’t need to purchase a Mexico sim card

If you are traveling to Mexico from Canada or the USA, it is worth checking your phone plan before purchasing a Mexico sim card. Some networks, like T-Mobile, do include Mexico within their coverage at no extra cost. If you are traveling to Mexico from elsewhere in the world, or you have an American/Canadian sim card that does not include Mexico in its standard plan, you may be able to purchase add-on packages so that you can use data in Mexico. However, this may work out more expensive than picking up a sim card in Mexico. 

For instance, Verizon offers excellent coverage but the price of using Verizon data in Mexico is far more expensive than the price of purchasing a local plan.

If Mexico is not included in your phone plan, you should absolutely not allow data roaming on your phone when traveling here as the cost can be exorbitant. This is particularly true if you have a phone plan from outside the Americas (e.g. a British/European sim). You can get decent Mexico sim card packages for less than $10 a month. These typically include a set amount of minutes and texts, a certain amount of data, and often, unlimited social media and WhatsApp usage. So, even if your own country does include Mexico within its coverage plan, you might want to consider buying a Mexico sim card just in case, especially if you will be spending a relative amount of time in Mexico. You never know when a local number may come in handy.  

Purchase a Mexico E-Sim 

A Mexico e-sim is a good alternative to buying a physical sim if you don’t want the inconvenience of taking your sim card out of its holder or you are worried about losing it. The plans work out a bit more expensive than a physical sim but they are still reasonable. 

I live in Mexico so I have always used Telcel, but on a recent trip around Europe, I bought E-sims in every country I visited (Montenegro, Albania, Austria, and the UK). Their data plans helped me stay connected so that I could easily use Google Maps and get around. 

Not taking the sim card out of my phone was a big plus for me because all of my online banking is tied to my Mexican phone number. If I want to transfer money or pay a bill, I have to get a confirmation code sent to my SMS for security and it was simply too much of a risk for me to change my sim and potentially not be able to receive the SMS/access my money O_O 

Airalo and Holafly are two of the biggest and most trustworthy E-Sim brands. I personally use Holafly as although they are a bit pricier, they offer unlimited data. 

The packages they offer are as per the below. Note that all prices are in USD. 

Airalo eSIM Mexico packages 

• Chorro Fon 1GB data package for 7 days: $8
• Chorro Fon 2GB data package for 15 days: $15
• Chorro Fon 3GB data package for 30 days: $21
• Chorro Fon 5GB data package for 50 days: $32.50 

Holafly eSIM Mexico packages 

• 5 days of unlimited data for $19
• 7 days of unlimited data for $27
• 10 days of unlimited data for $34
• 15 days of unlimited data for $47
• 20 days of unlimited data for $54
• 30 days of unlimited data for $64
• 60 days of unlimited data for $84
• 90 days of unlimited data for $99

Do note that you need to check whether your phone is compatible with an E-sim or not before purchasing. Most iPhones and Android phones released in the last couple of years are compatible but it pays to double-check. 

Once your purchase is complete, you will receive an email with a QR code and some straightforward instructions to follow to get your e-sim up and running. 

Where to Buy a Mexico Sim Card in 2024

There are several places where you can pick up a Mexico sim card. You will find little kiosks selling them at various international airports on arrival in the country, you can purchase them from Oxxo convenience stores (the Mexican version of 7/11) or you can purchase them in any phone store.

Buying a Mexico sim card at Oxxo 

The easiest way to pick up a Mexico sim card is to venture into an Oxxo store or a 7/11. You will be able to pick up a Telcel sim card here. Simply go to the counter and tell the server that you want to buy a Telcel sim card. This is easy to do even with minimal Spanish.

You can say ¨yo quiero una tarjeta sim de telcel por favor¨. (I want a Telcel sim card please). Or failing that, you can easily type out what you are trying to say on the Google Translate app on your phone :). Telcel has several different bundles available. Just point to the one that you want. 

You will be given a packet containing your sim card that is pre-activated with the number of minutes, data, and messages that you selected. Your new Mexican phone number will be displayed on the side of the packet.

Buying a Mexico sim card at the airport 

You will find vendors selling Mexico sim cards at little kiosks at virtually every major international airport. However, these usually charge a premium rate and work out more expensive than buying the sim from a convenience store or phone shop. They depend on unsuspecting tourists not knowing how to get a sim card and the going rate of things when they arrive in the county. It is better to purchase your sim card only from an authorized dealer. Most airports have complimentary wifi. Get to your hotel/accommodation and then head to the nearest Oxxo to buy a sim card. 

You will find Oxxo stores on virtually every street corner in Mexico.

Buying a Mexico sim card at a phone store 

Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T stores are everywhere in Mexico. To find one, you can simply Google the name of the store and the name of the city that you are in. The rates and process for purchasing a sim are the same as when heading into a convenience store. However, queues are often longer in phone stores, with customers purchasing phones and waiting in line to ask all manner of complex/tech questions.

So, it still works out easier to simply buy your sim card from a convenience store. 

Recharging your Mexico sim card 

You will get SMS notifications from your Mexico sim card provider to notify you when you are approaching the end of your current term, when you are out of data/ minutes, etc. When you need to recharge, you can do so either online or at an Oxxo store/phone store. 

There are also several online websites like Ding or Recharge that allow you or others to send credit/bundles to your Mexico sim card. They can do so simply by entering your Mexican mobile number and specifying an amount/bundle to be charged to their card. 

If you head into an Oxxo or a 7/11 store, you can ask the vendor to recargar (recharge) your package. You need to have your phone number on hand as they will input it into the screen. 

The top-up is automatic and you will receive an SMS notification to advise you that your phone has been recharged. You may have to restart your phone for this to take effect. 

Purchase a Mexico sim card online before your trip 

If you prefer to have everything organized and in order, before you head to Mexico, you can buy a Mexico sim card online before your trip. However, keep in mind that doing so comes at a premium price and can cost you more than twice as much as a sim card purchased locally. 

Additional Things to Know About Buying a Mexico Sim Card 

Some other useful things that you want to consider before buying a Mexican sim card are detailed below.

A Mexico Sim Card Helps You to Stay Connected

Your phone needs to be unlocked 

Your cell phone needs to be unlocked before you can use a Mexico sim card. If your phone is locked, it means it is contractually bound to the carrier that you purchased a contract. 

Checking if your iPhone/Android phone is unlocked 

Today, a lot of phones are unlocked from the get-go but it is worth checking. Depending on your provider, you may be able to reach out to your network before you depart for Mexico via live IM chat, email, or phone call. Failing that, there are a couple of ways you can check. If you have an iPhone, head to the settings section of your phone. 

Then go to  Cellular > Cellular Data. If you see Cellular Data Network, then your phone is probably unlocked. 

If you have an Android phone, the process for checking if your phone is unlocked varies depending on the specific model. However, as standard, you may be able to go to the settings and then head to Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators and tap Search Now.

This way, you can see if the names of other carriers come up. If multiple carrier names show up, your phone might be unlocked.

Finally, you can check if your phone is unlocked by inserting a sim card, perhaps when you arrive in Mexico, and trying to make a call. If the call goes through, your phone is likely unlocked. 

If you arrive in Mexico and realize that your phone is in fact locked, you can head to phone stores and stalls in malls and easily find an unlocking service. As in any country, you will be able to find someone who unlocks your phone for a few pesos. 

Coverage is limited in Mexico 

Telcel is the Mexico sim card provider that gives the best coverage. If you opt to buy a sim card with either Movistar or AT&T, you may find that you find more instances of finding that you have no phone signal, especially when you leave touristy areas and major cities. 

However, whatever Mexico sim card you opt to purchase, you are guaranteed to be met with occasions where you have no 3G/4G and no network coverage while traveling in Mexico. When driving along rural roads in the Yucatan to ruins like Edzna and Mayapan , you may find that you keep completely losing the signal. 

In some more remote beach towns like El Cuyo , you might find that the signal wavers in and out. 5G was launched in 18 Mexican cities in February 2022 and the intention is for Mexico to become home to the biggest 5G network in Latin America. As of yet, this is still a work in progress and most places are limited to just 4G. 5G coverage is only found around major cities. 

You don’t need to change your number for Whatsapp

A lot of people worry about how changing out their phone sim card will affect the messaging apps that they use like Whatsapp and Viber. When you change a sim card in your phone, your number on Whatsapp, etc will not be automatically changed to the new number.

Instead, when you change your sim and log into your Whatsapp, you will see a prompt asking what number you want to use. If you want to continue using your existing number, you can simply click to confirm that.

That physical sim card doesn’t have to be inside your phone for you to use the number if it has already been registered to the device.

Social media coverage includes select apps 

All Mexico sim card providers offer unlimited social media use for the duration of the bundle. This may be two weeks, a month, or a different amount of time depending on the prepaid package that you selected. Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Tiktok are included in this. YouTube is not.

You will notice that some bundles also offer an additional extra Spotify data bundle. The specific social media apps included and amount of free usage offers varies depending on the specific plan and sim card provider.

Download offline maps and other useful apps 

One reason why you may want to purchase a Mexico sim card may be so that you can easily navigate around Mexico using Google Maps or similar GPS apps.

Buying a Mexico sim card can make your life a lot easier during your trip, especially if you are renting a car and driving in Mexico .

While this is useful and worthwhile, you should also consider downloading essential apps and maps to use offline. For instance, Maps Me works offline. That way, you are covered if you are navigating your way through a rural area and you lose your phone signal.

Assess whether you need a roaming device 

If you are going to be spending an extended period of time in Mexico, working remotely, or operating multiple devices, you may want to consider purchasing an international roaming device like a Skyroam. These small, light devices are easy to carry in your luggage and in your bag.

Ultimately, whether you choose to purchase a physical sim or digital sim cards, having a Mexican sim card will help you stay connected during your trip. As well as helping you keep in touch with people and aiding you in your trip planning and managing your itinerary, it is good to always have a way to reach people in case of an emergency. 

A Mexico sim card is important for your safety as much as anything else.

Why do you need a Mexico SIM card for your trip?

A local SIM card in Mexico offers numerous benefits for tourists, including reliable connectivity, affordable rates, and ease of use. With a local SIM card, you can easily navigate your way around, make reservations at restaurants, post updates on social media, and keep in touch with your loved ones back home (the majority of plans discussed in this article offer both domestic and international outgoing calls to the U.S. and Canada).

Locked Phones: What You Need to Know

Before purchasing a SIM card, ensure your phone is unlocked. A locked phone means it’s restricted to a specific provider and won’t work with another company’s SIM card. If you’re leasing your phone, it’s likely locked, but you can have it unlocked at a specialized shop or by paying off the device in full.

There are shops in Mexico that specialize in unlocking phones; however, this approach demands additional effort on your part and results may vary.

Bypassing Locked Devices with a Mobile Hotspot

One solution for locked phones is using a mobile hotspot. These devices allow you to insert a SIM card and create a Wi-Fi network for your other devices. Consider purchasing a SIM card-compatible hotspot, like the GlocalMe , to stay connected while in Mexico.

Where can you buy a Mexican SIM card?

One convenient option to buy a Mexico SIM card is at the airport upon arrival. In cities like Mexico City and Cancun, you’ll find kiosks and stores selling SIM cards from providers such as Telcel, Movistar Mexico, and AT&T Mexico. While this option offers immediate connectivity, prices may be double or more vs purchasing outside the airport. That could mean a 50-100 peso difference (~$3-6 USD).

Buying a SIM card at a local store

Another option is to buy a Mexico SIM card at a local store such as Soriana, Chedraui or an OXXO convenience store, which are ubiquitous throughout the country. Here, you’ll find a range of prepaid SIM cards at competitive prices. Just ensure you have an unlocked phone first.

If you’ve already decided which provider you’d like to use, you can also search for an AT&T, Movistar, or Telcel store near you. These providers tend to have multiple branches in cities throughout Mexico.

Ordering a Mexico SIM card online

You can also buy your SIM card online before your trip, with providers often shipping the cards to your home country. This way, you can arrive prepared and have your phone set up and ready to go as soon as you land. However, this option usually entails extra shipping fees and may require longer waiting periods.

A more convenient alternative to purchasing a physical SIM card online is opting for an eSIM using Airalo . This way, you don’t need to wait for a physical SIM to arrive in the mail or plan much in advance. eSIMs can be set up in minutes and are ready to use as soon as you land in Mexico. By choosing an eSIM with Airalo , you can avoid extra shipping fees and eliminate the waiting period associated with ordering a physical SIM card. However, expect to pay a bit more for the convenience, as a 15-day 2 GB data plan with Airalo costs $15 USD, whereas a comparable plan with Telcel costs just over $11 USD.

Where to Buy an eSIM 

Purchasing an eSIM online is an easy and convenient option for those looking to stay connected during their travels. Major Mexican providers such as Telcel , Movistar , and AT&T now offer eSIM options on their websites. To buy an eSIM from these providers, visit their respective websites and follow the instructions to purchase and activate your eSIM plan.

Warning : While these carriers advertise eSIM options, it’s important to note that eSIMs are generally not available on prepaid plans. Always check the fine print or consult with customer service to ensure that the eSIM option is available for the type of plan you are interested in.

However, for frequent travelers, third-party apps like Airalo , DENT , and Nomad might be a more convenient choice. These apps streamline the process of purchasing eSIMs for multiple countries, making it a breeze for travelers on-the-go. Once you set up your account with one of these apps, getting an eSIM for your next destination is as simple as selecting your desired plan and completing the purchase.

To use Airalo , DENT , or Nomad , download the app from your device’s app store, create an account, and browse the available eSIM plans for Mexico or any other country you plan to visit. These apps offer a range of plans catering to different needs and durations, ensuring you find the perfect plan for your trip. 

Once you’ve made your purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to install the eSIM on your smartphone, and you’ll be ready to stay connected throughout your travels.

What are the best SIM card options for Mexico?

When considering a SIM card for your trip to Mexico, you’ll likely come across several providers, including Telcel, Movistar, AT&T, and Bait. We’ll evaluate each of them here.

• TELCEL does not offer an eSIM option for prepaid plans.
• BAIT currently does not offer an eSIM option.

Telcel: Best coverage and plans

Telcel is the largest provider in Mexico, offering the best coverage throughout the country. A Telcel SIM card ensures that you’ll have a reliable connection in most regions while enjoying various data and call packages. Telcel also offers tourist-specific plans tailored to short-term travel needs.

Telcel offers a range of Amigo Sin Límite plans, which include data, unlimited minutes and SMS, and access to popular social media platforms. Plans range from 1 day (50 MB data for $10 MXN) to 30 days (6 GB data for $500 MXN). Some plans also include roaming in the United States and Canada. 

When we were with Telcel, we usually opted for the $200 MXN Amigo Sin Límite plan, which is good for 30 days and includes 3 GB of data and unlimited calls and texts within Mexico and to the U.S. and Canada.

We would be remiss not to mention that although Telcel is known for having the best coverage within Mexico, our experience and anecdotes from others suggest that prepaid plan data may deplete more quickly than one might anticipate. [Wags finger] Sneaky, sneaky, Telcel. 

Movistar Mexico: More data and app benefits

Movistar Mexico is another popular choice for travelers, offering a range of prepaid SIM cards and data plans that provide more data and app benefits compared to Telcel. Their GigaMove plans range from 6 GB to 22 GB of data, with additional perks like unlimited minutes and SMS, access to social media, music, gaming, and mobility apps such as Waze, Google Maps, and Uber that don’t count against your data usage. Prices start at $235 MXN/month for the 6 GB plan and go up to $419 MXN/month for the 22 GB plan. Some plans also include international roaming with 8 GB of data. 

While Movistar’s coverage may not be as extensive as Telcel, it still caters to most tourist hotspots, making it an attractive option for those seeking more data and app benefits during their stay in Mexico.

AT&T Mexico: Unlimited social and data packages

AT&T Mexico offers competitive plans with unlimited social media, unlimited calls and texts, and attractive data packages ranging from 500 MB to 3 GB, along with additional data for video streaming on platforms like YouTube and Netflix. Telcel’s prepaid phone cards for Mexico range from two weeks to 30 days, and the prices are quite affordable. With Telcel, you can enjoy unlimited calls, texts, and social networks in the country, so it’s ideal if you want to upload travel photos to Facebook or Instagram.

Another advantage of this card is that if your plan expires and you still have mobile data left, you can start a new plan with that rollover data.

You can buy a Mexico SIM card in the United States or once you get to Mexico. So, whether you want to prepare ahead and purchase it before the trip, or get a local SIM at your destination, it’s up to you.

Buy a Mexico SIM card in the U.S.

If you want to get a SIM card for Mexico while you’re still in the U.S., you must purchase it online. You can either opt for the  eSIM card, which arrives to your email instantly, or you can order a physical SIM card , which will arrive by mail to your house within 1-5 days, depending on the delivery method.

In my opinion, these two options are the best alternatives since you can take care of setting up your mobile data before you leave for your trip, and you’ll have Internet as soon as you land. Personally, I don’t want to waste my vacation time looking for phone cards at booths, kiosks, and stores. Plus, if I have any questions or problems with my SIM card, I can deal with those issues before I travel.

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Mexico, how to top up your SIM card, and how to buy one online.

Before you start, let’s see if you actually need a SIM card in Mexico. If you don’t mind being without Data, you could probably rely on hotels, cafés, and restaurants that provide Wifi. 

Although, when my partner and I go around Mexico, we love to have access to a map, we want to be able to communicate with each other when we are not together, and frankly, it makes our lives easier!

You should note that if you’re American or Canadian, your mobile phone provider may be offering service in Mexico.

So, if that’s your case, you won’t be needing a SIM card for Mexico.

Best SIM Card In Mexico

The best prepaid SIM card in Mexico is Telcel. I personally used Telcel during my stay in Mexico and everything was fine.

Telcel is the largest mobile phone company in Mexico meaning you’ll get more coverage across the country. 

That said, they offer options with unlimited social media. Yes, you read that right, some social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp won’t count towards your internet usage.

There are other SIM card providers in Mexico, but we strongly recommend Telcel.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Mexico

You can either buy a Telcel prepaid SIM card in person at the international airport, in an OXXO convenience store, or on Amazon. 

We recommend buying your SIM card in an OXXO store if you wish to find the cheapest option possible.

Usually, you can expect higher costs at the airport, or via Amazon.

Below, you’ll find more information to learn how to buy a SIM card in an OXXO store.

Buying A SIM Card in An OXXO Store

The SIM cards are usually next to the cashier. You’ll see different data plans. You can point to the Telcel SIM prepaid card you’re interested in buying. 

Then, they’ll give you the package and a receipt, but you’ll need to install your SIM card yourself.

You simply need to open up your phone with the little thingy to open the SIM card compartment, add your new Mexican SIM card in there, and voilà!

How To Buy A Mexico SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could also purchase it online on websites like Amazon.

Here’s an overview of the costs:

• SIM-only (that you can recharge online): around $18
• Prepaid SIM card with 2GB: around $28
• Prepaid SIM card with 4GB: around $40

Now, this can be wonderful if it works, but sadly many people reported that their SIM card didn’t work as planned on arrival. Is it a mistake on their behalf, or couldn’t they understand the SMS in Spanish? 

It’s hard to tell. Some people also reported that it worked just fine. So, it’s up to you to decide if the risk is worth taking.

If you don’t want to risk it, I’d recommend buying it in person in Mexico.

Alternatively, you could purchase a SIM card on SimOptions .

How Much Does A SIM Card Cost In Mexico

The initial cost is higher because you need to buy the SIM card too. If you’re staying long-term, you’ll be able to top up instead of buying a new SIM card every time.

We had originally bought our Telcel SIM cards in an OXXO store for around EUR 12 (or $14, or MXN 280). If my memory is good, we only had a few GB of data (probably between 2-4).

Obviously, if you need more data, the cost will be higher.

How To Top Up A Mexico SIM Card

When it’s time to top up your Mexico SIM card, you’ll have two options. You can either go back to the OXXO store to top up, or you can do it online. Click here to get started .

Note that the website is only available in Spanish, so I’ll share screenshots of the different steps with you.

The steps below are for the Internet only, but you can browse other options if you wish to make calls.

Step 1: Browse the internet packages available. I usually go for Internet Amigo 300, which gave me 5 GB and unlimited data for social media networks – valid for 30 days.

You’ll find several options between MXN 50 and 500 depending on the timeframe and data needed.

Step 2: Choose a package and click on the purple button “Lo Quiero”.

Step 3: Then, you’ll see two options appear. Click on “Compra Ahora” to buy it right away.

Step 4: Enter your Telcel phone number twice (you can find it on the SIM card package). Then, click on “Continuar”.

Step 5: On the next screen, you’ll need to enter the following information:

• Card number
• Date of expiration
• Email address

Then, press on “Continuar”.

* Now, as my Revolut travel card is linked to my European address, I wasn’t able to enter a Mexican ZIP code. So, I simply typed the one suggested there “00000” – and it worked.

If this option doesn’t work for you, or if you’d rather go through the process in English, you can always head to Recharge.com . It’s slightly more expensive, but it’s fairly easy to use. I personally topped up via Telcel’s website a few times and it always worked fine for me.

I have been all over Mexico, to more than half the states and nearly all the big travel destinations, and free public WiFi has never worked for me anywhere — not even in big cities like Mexico City and Cancun.

How much does a SIM card cost in Mexico?

SIM cards in Mexico vary in price, but shouldn’t be more than $10 USD. Now, this is just for the card without data, which you can also buy here from Amazon .

With this empty card, you will have to then fill it with data so that the card has use — as without data added to it, your Mexico data SIM card has no function.

How much data you want to buy, where you buy the data (airports often charge more, for example) and how much each Mexico phone company charges — will all vary.

As a general ballpark figure, since I only recommend using Telcel, you can expect to pay about $15 USD for 4gb.

This $15, plus the $5-10 cost of the card itself, means it’s only about $15 less than buying one online right now.

Doing this means you already have the card in hand, and won’t waste any of your precious Mexico travel time getting a SIM card and setting it up.

Once you swap SIMs, you’ll have a Mexico number that starts with +55 or +52, as the SIM is basically what connects the phone to the phone number.

Keep in mind that buying Mexico SIM cards at the airport is about 25% more than if you get one outside the airport, which is why some people wait.

If you’re going to wait to get one until you leave the airport, have plans for how you’ll get to your accommodation.

While airports say they have free WiFi, I’ve never been able to properly connect to Mexico airport WiFi — and if you don’t have a SIM with data, you won’t be able to call an Uber.

As it’s often not too much cheaper to buy the SIM card at the airport versus buying one online in advance , here are a few things to consider about your airport purchase:

• Your flight might be delayed and you end up arriving at the airport when all the shops are closed, and now you can’t buy a SIM card.
• They might be sold out of the SIM card you need for your phone.
• You might arrive to the airport, and even though you told them you were traveling, your credit card company is blocking international charges, and now you can’t buy a SIM card 😡

Whatever the circumstances are, there’s a good chance something won’t work out when buying a SIM card in Mexico at the airport.

📲 OXXO Sim Card Mexico

In most parts of Mexico, it seems there’s an OXXO on every street, or at least every 3-5 blocks. All OXXOs sell Mexico SIM cards, and in several brands, including Telcel.

To buy one, head into any OXXO and ask for one of the SIM cards (chips) behind the counter. You’ll need to know what brand you want, and the amount of data you want to buy.

After purchasing, you’ll then put in the new SIM card and go through the activation process. ⚠️ Note: In Mexico, SIM cards are called “chips.”

📲 Walmart Sim Card Mexico

Walmarts are also all over Mexico, though much less prevalent than OXXO.

The cost for the SIM card itself will be comparable, though OXXO tends to be a few dollars cheaper.

However, if you happen to find yourself near a Walmart, you may want to try getting the card there over an OXXO.

The benefit to getting your SIM at Walmart is that there’s more employees, so that’s likely someone around who speaks English and can take more time to assist you.

In my experience, it’s rare to get an English-speaking cashier in OXXO.

Will my phone work in Mexico?

If you’re wondering, Will my cell phone work in Mexico? — you’re in luck, because it just might , but that depends on your carrier.

Some U.S. companies do offer complimentary North America service within Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, as these are the top two international travel destinations for Americans.

You will have to call your company to find out they offer you this. If they don’t, they will likely offer you the option to turn your international roaming on but don’t do this.

International roaming is much much much more expensive than buying any prepaid SIM Mexico option, so resist this urge.

What Mexico sim card is best for you? Of course we can’t answer that as everyone is different. While some people may only use Google Maps and Whatsapp, others will want to update their socials, stream media, and stay connected as if they were at home.

There are many variables to take into account when it comes to finding the right sim card for Mexico. In this article we will break down the options, and look at how to find the best sim for you.

How much does a sim card in Mexico cost ? Of course price is one of the most important factors. Usually you can save a lot of money by buying a local sim card, but some packages aren’t that great of a deal when you look at the small print. No one likes getting ripped off, so it’s best to do your research beforehand.

The cheapest deals might not necessarily be the best deals overall. Always make sure to check all of the details thoroughly so you know exactly what you are getting. Sometimes the deal may be cheap, but top-ups might be pretty expensive.

Make sure to carefully look at the initial package. Would you pay that much for data back home? If not, then it’s probably not a good deal. But data costs can vary hugely country by country.

By far the easiest option for buying a sim card in Mexico is to get an eSim. Simply apply and register online before your trip. There’s no need to find an outlet, negotiate prices in ‘Spanglish’, or risk losing your own sim after you take it out of your phone and hide it in a very secure place (this may have happened to us)!

An eSim is just like a normal sim but without a physical product. You just download it onto your phone and it gives you access to your new data plan. The only downside is that not all phones are compatible. Make sure that your device is eSIM-compatible and that your carrier is unlocked before purchasing.

You may have to just get whatever is available in the airport at the time, which can be an issue with night time arrivals as many shops will be closed.

One of the reasons I recommend an Airalo e-sim card for traveling to Mexico is that they operate on the Telcel mobile data network.

For my research about the best Mexico prepaid sim cards for tourists I also compared all the 4G/5G data networks of the mobile internet operators in Mexico and I found out that the 4G/5G network coverage of AT&T and Movistar is very weak compared to Telcel.

This Airalo Mexico e-sim card deal is only valid until 1 February 2024. Airalo has a 50% offer on this e-sim card plan at the moment, which makes it a super easy choice to order an Airalo e-sim card for your trip to Mexico . Lets hope they continue this 50% off on Airalo e-sim cards for Mexico.

So for traveling in Mexico Traveltomtom always recommends a prepaid or e-sim card from Telcel over any other mobile internet provider.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Mexico or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards for tourists only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly. 

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Mexico.

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Mexico

Buying an e-sim card on arrival in Mexico is unfortunately still not possible at the international airports of for example Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, etc. and neither in phone stores anywhere in Mexico.

None of the mobile internet providers in Mexico provide e-sim cards for tourists. They only sell prepaid physical sim cards for tourists.

Luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell Mexico e-sim cards for tourists. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Mexico from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

SimOptions is a reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your tourist e-sim card for Mexico through SimOptions is done fast and easy.

Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Unfortunately SimOptions does not specify on which network in Mexico the Three HK e-sim cards use operate in Mexico. On top of that users have reported that with these HK e-sim cards they had problems using TikTok, as per Hong Kong regulations TikTok is banned and blocked.

The good thing about the Three HK international e-sim cards is that they come with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852. This means incoming phone calls and sms are supported. These e-sim cards do not come with calling credit, so outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

Unfortunately SimOptions doesn’t specify exactly which mobile network operator in Mexico they use and the international e-sim cards from SimOptions are not 5G ready, so the max data speed on these Mexico e-sim cards  is 4G/LTE.

The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in Mexico. For more info check the SimOptions website . 

Lately I have been recommending Nomad e-sim cards a lot as they have really great deals for a lot of countries. The Nomad e-sim card plans for Mexico are not bad at all. In fact some are even better value deals than the Airalo e-sim cards.

Still Traveltomtom considers Airalo as the best e-sim card for traveling to Mexico. That is because the Nomad e-sim cards operate on the 4G/LTE mobile data network of AT&T and Movistar and unfortunately not on Telcel.

However, if you travel to just the standard amazing places to visit in Mexico then you are ok with a Nomad e-sim card. An e-sim card that uses the Telcel network is recommended for those going off the beaten path in Mexico.

The Nomad website is a little less user friendly for finding the best e-sim cards for traveling to Mexico. You can't see all e-sim card deals in one overview, you have to click a little here and there.

As you can see above the prices for Nomad Mexico e-sim cards aren't bad at all compared to SimOptions and Airalo. The best value e-sim card for Mexico from Nomad is the one with 10 GB data for $29 USD,  which comes down to $2.9 USD per Gigabyte.

The Nomad e-sim cards are from eSIM Go and they are data-only. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported. They operate on the LTE/4G network of AT&T and Movistar.

The Nomad Mexico e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in Mexico. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website . 

Airalo is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using Airalo for ordering an e-sim card.

In the most popular places to visit in Mexico you will find a 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is pretty good these days. There is in fact still very little 5G in Mexico.

All the Airalo e-sim cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. What is the cheapest e-sim card for Mexico?

The cheapest e-sim card for Mexico is an e-sim card from Nomad for just $7 USD , it will give you 1 GB data for 7 days. Airalo offers the same e-sim card plan but charges $8 USD. These e-sims are only valid in Mexico and do not support calling and texting. 

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Mexico

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Mexico without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Mexico, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Mexico so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

Overseas data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you in pretty  much every amazing tourist destinations in Mexico there is 4G/LTE available.

And price-wise it should be a no brainer since you have seen how affordable the e-sim cards for Mexico are.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: “Tom, can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Mexico.

Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends. 

Where to buy an e-sim card for Mexico? 

You can buy an e-sim card for Mexico on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Mexico. At the international airports in Mexico you will find several sim card shops and phone stores that sell all kind of tourist sim cards. If you can't see any phone shops you can try your luck at the convenient stores. They randomly charge you something but if you are lucky they help you set up the sim card.

But as mentioned before the sim cards shops and convenient stores in Mexico only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, no e-sims.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for Mexico?

You can order an e-sim card for Mexico pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Mexico or before. You will need a stable internet connection to instal your e-sim card. Pretty much all the international airports in Mexico have free public WiFi which works ok most of the time, so you could use that to install your e-sim card.

Here are some general tips and FAQ’s for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Mexico e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Mexico. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone. 

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Mexico or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Mexico and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards. 

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider as well. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Mexico e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for your next trip to Mexico.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a Mexico e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Mexico. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Mexico e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a Mexico e-sim card?

No, unfortunately all the tourist e-sim cards for Mexico available on the internet do NOT include calling and texting. The e-sim cards from SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad  are data-only e-sim cards and any outgoing calls/sms are not supported. 

If you buy a prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival in Mexico in a store or at the airport then you get (unlimited) calling and texting included.

Most hotels, restaurants and tour companies in Mexico have WhatsApp services, so you can easily give them a call through WhatsApp. There is no direct need for local calling minutes. 

Does a Mexico e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, most of the Mexico e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet do not come with a phone number, which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

There is one exception and that is the Three HK international e-sim card that you can order via SimOptions . This e-sim comes with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852.

Local prepaid sim cards that you can buy once you arrive in Mexico offer incoming and outgoing calling and texting.

Can I use 5G on an Mexico e-sim card?

No, unfortunately none of the by Traveltomtom recommended e-sim cards for Mexico are 5G ready. Which means the max data speed on all e-sims is 4G/LTE. That said, AT&T and Movistar do barely offer 5G anyway and the 5G network from Telcel is also still fairly small. There is not much 5G in Mexico anyway.

Are there e-sim cards for Mexico with unlimited data?

None of the by Traveltomtom recommended Mexico e-sim cards for tourists include unlimited data.

Even if you would come across e-sim card providers that offer e-sim cards for Mexico with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes. 

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP). 

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Mexico e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading! 

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for Mexico with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card. However, what is then the point of an e-sim with unlimited data is what you have to ask yourself.

An  Airalo e-sim card for $24.5 USD  gives you 10 GB data which for most travelers is more than enough for their trip to Mexico. IF this is not enough you can also order 2 e-sim cards and after one is done, you instal the second one.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Mexico, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Mexico:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.  

In general if you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. 

Mexico prepaid sim cards for tourists offer bigger data plans than tourist e-sim cards you order online. In fact local prepaid sim cards with data are fairly cheap for tourists in Mexico. For around $10 USD you get a physical sim card plan with unlimited social media and 3 GB data.

However, a local prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Mexico in a phone store or at the airport but NOT on the internet. 

Another big difference is that local prepaid sim cards have the advantage that they come with a local phone number and mostly with calling minutes and sms bundles. That means incoming and outgoing calls are supported.

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Mexico. Some of them are great for Mexico as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

However, as of January 2024 the mobile internet providers in Mexico do not offer e-sim cards for tourists. They only offer physical prepaid sim cards for tourists in Mexico.

On arrival at the International Airports in Mexico the sim card stores only sells physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card on the internet is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Mexico.

You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Mexico. As soon as the plane lands, you are online!

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare the prices for Mexico e-sim cards with the prices for local prepaid sim cards in Mexico, it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much more affordable as you get many more Gigabytes for the same price.

But local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Mexico on arrival in a sim card shop or at the airport and a tourist e-sim card for Mexico can be bought in 2 minutes on the internet before your trip to Mexico. 

Remember that some of the e-sim cards for Mexico also go down to only $2.45 USD per Gigabyte as well. 

After a long flight you just want to get to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With e-sim cards you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands.

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Mexico. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid Mexico sim card.

Worried about getting around Mexico without internet on your phone? Here’s a detailed guide on how to get a Mexico SIM card .

If you’re planning a trip to Mexico , you’re in for a treat – this country has so much to offer, from colorful markets to ancient Mayan ruins , and everything in between. But let’s face it: staying connected while you’re on the go can be a challenge. Whether you need to make a call or use mobile data, relying on your home country’s SIM card can lead to steep international roaming fees.

That’s why it’s a smart move to get a Mexico SIM card when you arrive here. Not only will you save money on phone expenses, but you’ll also have the convenience of a local phone number and access to affordable rates for calls, texts, and data. Trust me, it can make a big difference when you’re trying to navigate a new city or stay in touch with your loved ones back home.

In this article, I’ll share some tips and tricks on how to get a SIM card in Mexico, including where to buy one, what to look for, and how to activate it. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, getting a local SIM card is a must-do when you’re exploring this beautiful country.

Is it Worth Getting a Mexico SIM Card?

Why you need a mexico sim card.

Before we get into the details, let us take a second and consider if you really need a SIM card in Mexico.

Having a Mexico SIM card will allow you to have internet data on the move, that means access to Google Maps (to find your way around), Whatsapp, and apps to access your hotel bookings. You’ll be able to communicate with locals, call an Uber or taxi, and stay connected with friends and family back home.

Mexico isn’t a developed country, so don’t expect to find WiFi everywhere you go. Some parts of Mexico like Holbox island and Puerto Escondido don’t have stable WiFi, so if you need to work remotely then yes you definitely need a Mexico SIM card. If you plan to do a Oaxaca road trip or drive all over Guanajuato, having a Mexico SIM card will make it easier to navigate, contact hotels and find restaurants to eat at.

Many US and Canadian service providers allow you to use their roaming service in Mexico so it’s worth checking with your telco company before you leave. This means you’ll be able to connect to the internet using the SIM card you already have, so in this case you might not need to buy a Mexican SIM card.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all offer free roaming services in Mexico. It does depend on the plan you have though, so make sure to check on their website. If you’re struggling to find it online, give their customer service team a call. There’s no point spending the money on a SIM card in Mexico if you can use the one you already have.

Some phones will be locked to the network provider and they won’t let you use other networks SIMs. Before you leave you’ll want to check if your phone will allow you to use other network SIMs.

To unlock your phone, simply contact your network provider who will be able to unlock the phone for you. This is usually free of charge but it is dependent on what network you are using.

Types of SIM Cards in Mexico

Here are some options for what type of SIM cards are available these days. I’ll go into details further on how to get each type of Mexico SIM cards.

With a Mexico eSIM (digital SIM card), you can toss out your physical cards and simply activate it on your phone through an app! An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM. You can install eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time. 

I personally use eSIMs wherever I travel these days as they are SO much more convenient – you can do everything online, and don’t need to go to the shop or activate it through the store. eSIMs are also really affordable too, with prices that vary according to the duration.

Most phones are compatible with eSIMs, including all of the new iPhones, Samsung, Google and Huawei phones. For a comprehensive list of phones compatible with eSIMs you can check out this article . 

A pre-paid Mexico SIM card allows you to call, text, and use the internet on your phone. You’ll get a local Mexican number and easily call and receive phone calls without requiring an internet connection. As well as this, when you get a Mexican SIM, most network providers give you free coverage in the US and Canada too.

Pay as you go SIMs (or prepaid plans) is a short-term option and you basically pay for your credits upfront and top it up as you go. If you’re just traveling around Mexico or you’re a digital nomad staying for an unknown period of time, I recommend getting the prepaid Mexico SIM card.

Postpaid plans are Mexico SIM cards with a monthly billing cycle. You can only get a postpaid plan if you have a temporary resident visa in Mexico . The process is super easy as a resident and it can be done within an hour!

This is what I have in Mexico and it works very well. I just went to a Telcel store with my passport and residency card, and right then and there, I got a postpaid sim card for which I get automatically billed every month.

I have bought many eSIMs on Airalo and they have all worked perfectly. Airalo is the world’s first eSIM store and it has eSIMs from over 190 countries and regions around the worlds.

In my opinion, eSIM cards will completely phase out physical SIMs over the next few years, especially with Apple announcing the iPhone 14 will only have eSIM functionality.

Pricing: 190 MXN (US$9.50) – 540 MXN (US$27) depending on local or regional plans. Local plans only allow you to use the eSIM in Mexico, while regional allows you to use it also in US and Canada.

Best Mexican Networks

Telcel has the best network coverage in Mexico. The only downside is that their pricing isn’t the most competitive, but you are paying for quality and reliability. I’ve used Telcel for almost two years now and have never had any problems with service or reception, even in some of the more rural areas.

It’s easy to buy a Telcel SIM card online or at any OXXO shop in Mexico . A prepaid SIM card itself costs between 29 and 149 pesos (around US$1.5-7.5). 3GB of data valid for 30 days on the sin limite plan (unlimited) costs 200 pesos (US$10.) That will also give you unlimited calls, texts, and most social media within North America. 

Pricing: 20 MXN (US$1) – 1200 MXN (US$64)

• Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 2GB Data – US$30
• Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 3GB Data – US$39.99
• Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 8GB Data – US$69.14

AT&T is the second-largest network in Mexico and offers good coverage in most areas, although it’s not as good as Telcel. There is a lot less variability in terms of packages available compared to Telcel and Movistar, but it does offer the cheapest plans.

Pricing: 50 MXN (US$2) – 200 MXN (US$10)

Movistar is the third-largest network in Mexico and offers good coverage in most areas but is more limited than the two former networks.

Movistar is a lesser-used network throughout Mexico and I haven’t met many people who use them. From what I’ve been told, their service is good but not as reliable or widely available as Telcel or AT&T. There aren’t as many Movistar stores around as Telcel and AT&T.

One thing that is great about Movistar though is the number of prepaid plans they offer. They have a better choice of plans compared with Telcel and AT&T.

If you’re the type who likes to be ready before a trip, you can always buy a prepaid SIM card online (links above) or an eSIM as mentioned. 

Otherwise, it’s easy to buy one when you arrive. You can get a SIM card at the airpor t in Mexico. Generally these are a little more expensive than the stores outside of the airport. But if convenience is what you’re after, then they are a great option to get you set.

You can also get SIM cards at OXXO convenience store s — there is literally one in every street corner. You can also buy them at Walmarts, large grocery stores and some convenience stores. 

A Mexico sim card usually costs US$5 including an activation fee. They will also ask you to top it up before purchasing. US$10 unlimited data is usually enough as an initial top-up.

how to Install & Activat e a SIM Card

This is totally dependent on the type of phone you have. I have an iPhone so you need a special SIM opening key (earrings work too!) to pop the SIM holder out and place my SIM in there. Each phone is mostly unique though so if you are struggling just type the name and model of your phone into google and there will be a SIM installation tutorial video you’ll be able to find. Here’s a quick example of a SIM installation for an iPhone and Android.

If you buy it in the official store in Mexico then ask politely for the staff to help you change your SIM card and activate it. Most of them are happy to do so for you without extra charge. If you get your card online you can log onto the official carrier’s website and follow the instructions there.

How to Recharge Your SIM

You can buy more credits online or at most OXXO shops. Alternatively, go to the website of your telco company. There they will ask for your activation code which is on the back of your SIM card. Then you can log into your account and purchase whatever plan you wish. Once the plan runs out, you can go back into your account and purchase another plan.

As you can see above, getting a SIM card in Mexico is pretty straightforward. For me, getting an eSIM is the easiest and most convenient option. It saves you the trouble of wasting time at the airport or running around looking for an OXXO to buy a physical SIM card.

But if your phone isn’t compatible with eSIMs, then I suggest buying a Telcel prepaid SIM card on Amazon before your trip. Again it’ll save your time and give you internet data the minute you land! Telcel has the best coverage in Mexico and its rates aren’t too bad either.

How many days does a TelCel phone number last for until you have to put more money on it? That is, when is that number no longer yours? Can you get eSIMS that provide a Mexican number and data? Which company? Thanks!

hi Jim, I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to your questions. I have a TelCel Mexican number and data that needs to be topped up every month. I’ve used it for 2 years now but I use it every month, so can’t tell you when it’ll stop functioning if you don’t top it up.

All the eSIMs I’ve bought from Airalo don’t have numbers attached to them, but I just took a look at TelCel’s website and I think they can provide eSIMs with numbers.

How to check mexico sim card number?

hi, it depends on which telco you’re using. If you’re using Telcel like me, you can send a message to 7878. The easiest way is probably just using your phone to call another Mexican number, that way they’ll see your number. If you have an eSIM, most of the case you won’t have a number as it’s just a data plan.

So If I were to go to OXXO I would only pay a max of $17.50 USD for a card and 30 days of data? This is the plan I’d like.

Thinking of buying one in Canada before I go, but they cost $42 CDN (~$35 USD) for 2gb. Wondering if this will truly save me money if I get one once I arrive in Mexico instead. Thank you very much!

hi Narlua, sorry to confuse you! TelCel has so many kinds of plans that honestly are confusing. Yes you are right, if you were to go to OXXO or Telcel, you would pay only a max of US$17.50 for the SIM card with 3GB of data. The linked list of plans is for people who sign a contract with Telcel and have an ongoing plan with automatic recharge each month. You’ll need an address here for that and two references (we don’t even use that living here).

And yes it will save you money getting one when you arrive here. The only thing is that OXXO folks are not gonna help you install the SIM. I would suggest getting an eSIM, that’s what I get everytime I travel. It’s super convenient, I don’t have to swap out physical SIM cards anymore and just activate it when I land. AND it’s cheaper than getting the physical SIM card. You’ll find the links above to buy them.

It seems like the e-sim is still more expensive? Cheapest one from that link for 30 days is $21 USD. I think I’ll opt for the physical card from OXXO. We also need two, so this seems like the most economical option. Unless I’m missing something? Thank you, really appreciate your prompt reply!

Movistar – A trademark of Telefonica

This company has been operating in the country since 1995, offering services of fixed and mobile telephone, fixed and mobile internet and television. To get one of their prepaid SIM cards, you can directly to one of their stores when arriving in Mexico. Their stores are located throughout the country. The cost of the SIM card called Chip Movistar is only MXN $60, and when activated you can enjoy 1400 MB for browsing and unlimited access to social networks (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat), for 15 days. Also, if you recharge MXN $60, you will receive an additional pack of 3000 MB to browse and 1000 MB to consume on Netflix and YouTube.

Telcel Mexico

Telcel is the largest company in the country and the first to bring 4G/5G speeds to its borders, and it has the most stores around Mexico. You will see a Telcel symbol everywhere, and there will be different stores where you can get a SIM card from this carrier.

With Telcel, the Amigos sin Limite remains a great option for travelers to get access to mobile data with one of the best carriers in the county. But people can also buy one using platforms such as Amazon, where they sell prepaid SIM Telcel cards that include mobile data, text messages, and phone calls.

Something worth mentioning about Telcel Mexico is that their SIM cards also work in Canada and the USA, which might be helpful for travelers. As for prices, this is the updated Amigos sin Limites price list:

• 2GB of mobile data plus text messages and phone calls for $9.
• 4GB of mobile data plus text messages and phone calls for $18.

AT&T Mexico

The second option available for travelers to use with local carriers comes with AT&T Mexico. Similar to Telcel, people can get a prepaid SIM card and then get a data package . The available plans vary from 5 to 30 days, varying from $2.5 to $18 according to the chosen plan.

Similar to Telcel, and thanks to the coverage offered by AT&T , SIM cards with data packages purchased in Mexico also include features to use in the USA and Canada, such as text messages, phone calls, and even mobile data for certain apps like WhatsApp or Facebook. 

Also, people won’t have to worry about not finding a store to get an AT&T SIM Card, as there are stores throughout the country .

Movistar Mexico

The last carrier on our list comes with Movistar. As of now, Movistar Mexico is the least favorite option for travelers , especially because their coverage and service have a lower quality compared to the rest.

On the other hand, they do try to include more benefits to the SIM cards they offer for travelers to have a better experience by including free use of apps such as:

• WhatsApp (30 days of free use).
• And many others.

Currently, Movistar Mexico offers three different first-time data packages to customers. These will vary from 1GB for 14 days and 4GB for 30 days. If people stay longer than this, they can get data packages that vary from $2.5 to $9 to get more mobile data and access to free apps as well.

As we mentioned before, in this country, the costs can vary depending on where you buy your Prepaid SIM card, regardless of the operator and whether it is through their stores or authorized agents. A Prepaid SIM card purchased in Mexico can go from $3 for less than 5 days of use to $30 for 30 days of use plans . However, on many occasions, you must add to this price $4 for administrative costs and another $4 for SIM card configuration. At some physical stores, this happens, and in some not.

In the case of buying them through online stores, this phenomenon is not repeated because the remote providers maintain the prices indicated on their websites without adding fees other than shipping costs to your address. In this case, the costs can go from $20 to $50.

Where can you get a SIM card in Mexico?

When traveling to Mexico, there are different places where to get a SIM card . As there are lots of visitors year after year, stores such as Oxxo and 7-Eleven are great options to get one, but there are also other alternatives, such as Walmart.

People can also try to get a SIM card from official stores from any of the mobile carriers we previously mentioned. On the other hand, there are also some stores on the airport which people can rely on . 

For travelers who decide to use this method, these are the pros of it:

• No need to sign a contract to get a SIM card.
• Easy recharge process through different stores.
• Access to local LTE/4G networks.
• Access to free apps for a limited time.
• Easy to swap SIM cards if necessary.

As for the cons of this service, we could mention the following:

• As the SIM card is not under your name, it’s hard to get proper support from any carrier.
• If your Android or iOS device doesn’t work with local networks, you won’t be able to use the SIM card.
• The amount of mobile data is limited for what travelers could need while abroad.
• Some stores will charge an extra fee for the setup process or for the SIM card itself.

Is it worth getting a SIM card in Mexico?

Truth be told, SIM cards offer different additional features to travelers, such as free access to some apps, but these won’t grant high-speed connections. Also, the amount of mobile data is not so high, which might be a letdown.

Therefore, it’s fair to say that this decision must be taken by each traveler according to their budget and what they need.

Holalfy is all about eSIMs with unlimited data which means you can use your phone and be online as much as you like while in Mexico.

They also use AT&T so you know you have a reliable mobile provider while you are traveling too.

Just be aware that Maya Mobile has some subtleties in their Unlimited data packages. I dived a little deeper on their page and saw you can select

• When data speed throttling occurs

So, although they allow sharing for some extra money, they also throttle the speed after 3 or 5 GB a day. Holafly does not do this.

Devices Compatible with a Mexico eSim

Not all devices are equipped with eSim technology. An eSim is an embedded SIM card built into your phone or tablet.

Since the technology is relatively new, only newer phones or tablets will be equipped with eSims. Generally, any high-end smartphone made in the last 3 years should have an eSim, other devices older than this probably won’t.

For example, the iPhone XS is the oldest iPhone model with an eSim inside it. So, how do you check if your device is compatible with an eSim? It’s very easy.

Dial *#06# on your phone. This will bring up all the unique information about your phone, including its IMEI number and maybe an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number. If you see an EID number, your phone is compatible with an .

The final step to using an eSIM on your device is ensuring it is unlocked from your provider. If you bought your phone or tablet through a contract, it might be locked to your mobile provider.

To check and unlock your phone, call your provider and ask them to unlock it. It should only take a few minutes to do.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Mexico

For the best network coverage in any country you visit, choosing an eSim that partners with a local network provider is always the way to go.

This will ensure you always have a data connection, and fast connection speeds, and may be able to add call minutes and SMS to your eSim data plan.

Currently, there are only three local mobile operators offering eSims in Mexico and these include Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T. Look for eSim providers that use these networks for the best experience while you are there.

Data Needed When Traveling to Mexico

How much data do you need while traveling around Mexico? This all depends on your budget and how you want to browse while you are there.

If you want to use your cell phone as you would at home, then you should find a data plan to match your usage.

Most people use about 5GB per week on average, but this can be as high as 20GB a week for those uploading to Instagram all the time or watching movies on their phones via a data connection.

You should be able to see your data consumption over time as a report on your smartphone or get a report from your provider. Once you know how many GB per week you use on average, you can find a data plan to match.

If you are traveling on a tight budget, you do have the option to choose less GBs per week but you’ll have to be smart about reducing your data consumption. Also, be careful not to run out of data and have to top up as this will almost double your local eSim costs.

Tips for Using eSIM in Mexico

Do not activate your esim until you land.

When you buy eSim data plans, they come with a limited time frame such as 7 days or 30 days. The data plan start date is the day you activate it. Therefore, if you activate it before you are in Mexico, you are losing days on your plan.

Make sure you only activate your eSim once you have landed in Mexico to make the most of the data plans.

Turn Data Off For Some Apps

If you are trying to conserve your data usage, go into settings on your phone and turn data off for the apps you don’t need. Apps that download photos and videos use the most data and Instagram is the biggest culprit.

By turning data off, these apps can never use your data allowance but they will still work on WiFi.

Download Google Map Areas

Did you know you can download specific areas on Google Maps and then use them offline without any data?

Google Maps is so helpful when traveling, I am on it more than anything else! I find everything from good restaurants to secluded beaches using it. By downloading the areas you are visiting on WiFi, you can use Google Maps as usual without using any of your data allowances.

Turn On Airplane Mode

Airplane mode stops your phone from connecting to a network so no apps can secretly use data in the background. This is a great way to conserve data and you can still use GPS with maps plus take pictures too.

Use Whatsapp

Whatsapp is the most used messaging app in Mexico. The free app allows you to send messages and make calls using data only, so it is perfect for an eSim data plan. Plus, you can communicate with hotels, taxis, tour guides, and more through the app.
