SKI TOURING MONTENEGRO

Montenegro Ski touring, skitouring in the snow paradise of the Balkans! Experience a still unknown skitouring Eldorado in the snow-covered Montenegro mountains. Untracked powder snow slopes and peaks with wide views of the multifaceted country offer the best opportunities for ski touring adventurers with a pioneering spirit. Should the weather not play along, we will switch to small ski areas with attractive alternative oh freeride along the piste.

The untamed beauty of Montenegro between the Adriatic Sea and high peaks. From the Mediterranean flair of the south coast to the lonely alpine mountains. An exciting journey for the ambitious ski tourer in the Durmitor Mountains and the Bjelasica Mountains. Bjelasica with the Biogradska Gora National Park and Durmitor with the National Park of the same name and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The easy to medium difficult tours offer ski mountaineers a wide range of ski tours. The summit heights in Durmitor reach around 2.500 m (Sljeme, 2.445 m or Bobotov Kuk, 2.523 m) with a maximum of 1.200 meters of ascent and descent. While the Bjelasica Mountains offer gentler terrain and leisurely tours, the ski tours in Durmitor are more difficult with the combination of rocky mountains, high valleys and steep steps.

About Montenegro, Durmitor and Bjelasica

Montenegro is a small mountainous republic in the Balkans. It is one of the smallest countries and, after independence in 2006, also one of the youngest countries in the world. However, Montenegro has an incredible diversity in such a small space. A varied sea coast, a large Skadar lake, mountain groups, friendly people and a turbulent history. The country is better known for tourism from the summer season. In summer tourists often use Durmitor as a starting point for mountain biking, four-wheel drive or hiking tours. The world famous Tara Gorge, the deepest gorge in Europe, is only about 20 minutes away by car.

But we go there in Montenegro in winter, when the mountain expanses are almost untouched. We will explore the slopes of Durmitor and Bjelasica, where Kolašin is now the largest Montenegrin winter sports center. Flat slopes and high-alpine climbs await ski tourers high above the somewhat sleepy winter sports resort of Zabljak.

11montenegro ski touring

Day 1 PODGORICA - ŽABLJAK

Transfer from Podgorica to Žabljak, accommodation in hotel, dinner.

Day 2 SKI TOURING VELIKI ŠTUOC (2104 m)

After breakfast departure for a sightseeing tour of the plateau in the vicinity of Žabljak. After the former Bosača ski resort, we will slowly gain altitude and climb the wide slopes of Dolovi to Mali Štuoc (1953 m). After a slight descent, we will ascend to Veliki Štuoc (2104 m). From the northernmost peak of Durmitor there is a beautiful view of our future ski destinations and Tara canyon, which is more lonely in winter. The direction os skiing will depend on the snow conditions. We will finish it on the outskirts of the city. After a stop at Žabljak, return to the hotel and have dinner.

Day 3 SKI TOURING SAVIN KUK (2313 m) and SLJEME (2445 m)

After breakfast, a short drive to the Savin Kuk ski center and a ride with two chairlifts to an altitude of 2200 meters. From the upper station ascent to Savin Kuk (2313 m). Beautiful views of the highest Durmitor peaks, Sinjajevina, Komovi and Prokletije. We will then head to the eastern peak of Šljeme (2445 m), a parade ski touring mountain in the Durmitor Mountains. We will use the lift again on the ascent, and we will ski from the top to the foothills. After a pleasant rest with a drink, drive to the hotel and dinner.

Day 4 SKI TOURING CVOROV BOGAZ (2152 m)

Transport to Ivan dol, then with skis over the icy Black Lake, first through the forest and past Veljko’s plate to Stari katun. We will climb the snowy expanses on the two-headed ski hub Čvorov Bogaz (2152 m). Bogaz in Turkish means an impassable path or strait. From the top there is an extensive view of the highest Durmitor peak Bobotov Kuk, the typical Minin Bogaz and Bandijerna, which will be our next destination. The effort of the ascent will be rewarded with unforgettable skiing in the valley. Return to Žabljak and dinner.

Day 5 SKI TOURING TROJNI PREVOJ (2245 m) and BANDIJERNA (2409 m)

This day is reserved for the royal tour. Following the already known path, we will climb to Veljkova slab and later to the shelter on Lokvica. In the canopy of the valley, a steeper part will be waiting for us, which will take us to the plateau, from where it is no longer far to the Triple Pass (2245 m). Snow conditions may allow us access to Bandjerna (2409 m). We will have a view of the southern part of Durmitor, and we will enjoy skiing on one of the selected options. We will end a long and hard day in Žabljak. This is also the end of our skitouring in Durmitor National Park.

Day 6 TRANSFER TO KOLASIN (1450 m) and SKI TOURING KLJUC (1973 m)

After breakfast drive to the famous bridge on Đurđevića Tara and through the canyon of Tara to the extensive mountain group Bjelasica. Here are still preserved protected primeval forests, above which rise peaks of metamorphic rocks in contrast to the limestone Durmitor. In front of Kolašin we will turn to the largest winter sports center Kolašin. We will take the ski lift to the northern slopes and ascent to peak of Kljuć (1973 m). The view extends practically to the whole of Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. From the top skiing to the lower station. Transport to Kolašin with, hotel  accommodation and dinner.

Day 7 SKI TOURING TROGLAVA (2072 m) and CRNA GLAVA (2139 m), transfer to Budva

Drive to the lower station of the new ski lift, which will take us almost to the top of Troglava (2072 m). From there we will continue our tour towards Crna glava (2139 m), the highest peak of Bjelasica. Unlike the neighboring peaks, it is overgrown with dwarf pine. The vast high plateau boasts many lakes, so it is visited by many mountaineers and tourists in the summer. To conclude, we will have a nice descent into the valley.

This is followed by a drive along the gorge of the Moraća River to the capital Podgorica and than to Skadar Lake to the Adriatic coast. Accommodation at a hotel in Budva, dinner. Te end of our stay in Montenegro.

Day 8 PODGORICA AIRPORT

Flight home.

Where and when do I meet your team?

Our team will wait for you at the airport. If you are arriving by land meeting point is also at the airport or elsewhere if you let us know where (this service is not included in a price). After the meeting, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Please note, that in some areas, due to a long drive to our base, we provide only one transportation per group, usually in the morning (Iceland, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Altai…). So take into consideration that one extra day and accommodation may be necessary.

Where do I meet my guide?

The guide will arrange a specific meeting location and time with you specifically. Most commonly, this location is at your accommodation or our base.

How much hiking up is involved?

There will be approximately 4-6 hours of hiking broken up in the day and approximately 800~1100 vertical meters of skiing.

Do I need climbing skins?

Yes, all of our ski touring tours require uphill travel, and skins are by far the most efficient way. Skins attach to the base of skis or split-snowboards, peel off at the top of the run, and get stowed in a pocket for the downhill fun.

Can I rent equipment?

You can rent equipment, but you need to inform us at least 21 days before the start of your program. Our trips are in remote areas where there are no shops or rental services, so we need to provide them from a distance. Please note that rental on the spot is usually not available.

Fitness and Experience

To enjoy this trip you should be comfortable operating at Fitness Level 3, and  Ski Tech Level 3:

Fitness Level 3 You do 3-4 hours cv training/sport per week . At this level you are happy doing a 5-6 hr hillwalk, 40-50ml cycle or 3-4hr mountain bike ride without being totally exhausted. If you are into challenges – then the thought of doing a road sportive, or training to do a 1/2 (or maybe even a full) marathon, wouldn’t seem too ridiculous. On foot: you should be able to do the full Langdale Horseshoe: Langdale – Pike of Stickle – Angle Tarn – Bow Fell – Crinkle Crags – Pike of Blisco – Langdale in a day without finishing up exhausted. On skis : you can skin uphill at 300-400m/hr for 3-4 hrs a day (ie 8-1200m of ascent each day). Tech Level 3 Confirmed Off Piste Skier . You can put down a reasonable set of tracks in powder, but difficult snow types – eg heavy wet snow, crusts, poor visibility or 40dg slopes – can all cause problems (though you can cope with them safely, if not elegantly!) *Equivalent to Ski Club of GB Off Piste Level: Purple – Advanced* Likely to say : ‘I’d like to handle difficult snow/steep slopes more confidently in better style’ Our Advice : Off piste coaching still useful. Intermediate off piste weeks are at your level too. If you want to get into ski touring, try a touring course or intro level ski tour. If you’re an established ski mountaineer, then intermediate level tours are generally suitable.

To view all of our Ski Fitness Levels and Off Piste Technical Levels, please visit our Ski Ability page.

If you need to top up your fitness for this trip, please see our Ski Touring Training Advice page.

Discover one of Europe’s true wildernesses in Montenegro. Over 90% of this small Balkan country is mountainous terrain and it is an ideal destination for an “off the beaten track” ski touring adventure. The scenery is simply breathtaking and although the mountains aren’t high by Alpine standards, there’s plenty of great terrain to be enjoyed. This is a unique opportunity to explore a new country by skiing and make lasting memories of an area that's less travelled. Our guides are experts in this emerging ski destination. Mountain Tracks is very excited to be heading to this area once again in 2021!

Day Itinerary

Travel day - Fly to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. You will be met at the airport and transfer by road to Kolasin. The distance is 75kms and transfer time is about 1½ hours. Check into the Boutique Hotel Brile.

The drive from the hotel to the ski fields will take about 15 minutes. We start with some warm-up runs on the pistes of Kolasin 1450 resort where there is some good tree skiing and ‘slackcountry’. Short hikes also give access to some couloirs from the Bjelasica ridge. We return to the Hotel Brile after skiing

  • We start the day by heading back to the Kolasin ski resort and ride the lift system to the top of the ski area. From here we skin up to the summit of Mt Bjelasica and enjoy an excellent ski down the south side into the Jelovica valley. We skin back up about 400m and ski back down to the ski resort and to our hotel.
  • Today’s goal is Jablanov Vrh peak in the Sinjavina mountains. We start with a 30 minute (16km) drive up to Gornje Lipovo valley from where we have an 850m (3 hours) skin up a trail that follows the road to the mountain pass at Vratlo and onwards to the peak. We can skin to the summit and from there we enjoy a ski down wide-open terrain back to the car park. We return to our hotel in Kolasin.
  • We’re heading back into the Sinjavina mountains for a second full day ski tour that takes us up to the Lucka Gora saddle and onto the ridge line to the summit at 2,100m. A number of routes of descent are available to ski back down to the road. We return for our last night in the Hotel Brile as tomorrow we’re heading to a new hotel in Zabljak village.

The transfer to Zabjlak village takes about 1½ hours and on our arrival, we check into the Hotel Zabjlak before heading out to ski. From the hotel, it’s a 5-minute drive to the ski resort and we ride the lifts to the top of the ski area at 2,010m. We make a short traverse to the summit of the 2,322m high Savin Kuk. The wide, south-facing face gives amazing panoramic views of the lake plateau and across the principal mountain range of Montenegro. The descent back into the ski area is about 900m vertical and we can repeat this circuit a few times. In the evening we enjoy the renowned Zablak apres-ski!

  • Sljeme Ridge – Montenegro’s longest ski run! We start the day with another short (5 minute) transfer by road to the trailhead for the long ascent to one of Durmitor’s highest summits, Sljeme (2,455m). From the summit there are various possibilities to descend the south-facing slope with over 1,000m vertical drop. We return to Zabljak for our last night

Transfer back to Podgorica airport. The distance is about 120kms and journey time 2 hours 30 minutes.

ski tour montenegro

This is an extensive list of the recommended clothing and equipment you will need if you are coming to one of our Ski Tours.

During the tour you will be staying most nights in catered high mountain huts and will need to carry all the equipment and clothing you require for the duration of the tour. The huts are comfortable but basic with limited facilities.

Any clothing or other items not required on the tour can be left in a travel bag at your first hotel ready for your return on the final night.

We recommend keeping the weight of your pack as light as possible. If you are new to alpine multi-day ski touring, try taking your pack out on the slopes before the tour to see how it feels. You quickly realise the benefit of ‘skiing light’.

If you are uncertain or need further information, don't hesitate to contact us.

When choosing clothing for ski touring you want to think light, warm and versatile. During the trip weather conditions will change and you’re likely to go from warm afternoons where you’ll be carrying most of your gear in your rucksack, to icy-cold mornings when you’re wearing everything to keep warm! Getting hold of the best and lightest kit available is always worth it and most of the major brands will be able to supply a suitable kit.

This season, we’ve partnered with Ortovox to provide us with the very best safety kit and clothing. Our guides will all be decked out in the latest Ortovox jackets and trousers and will keep warm, dry and comfortable thanks to their technical wool base- and mid-layers. Our guides couldn’t recommend their kit more highly.

  • Roll neck rather than a scarf. We use and recommend the ‘Buff¹ ¬ a light, stretchable tube. Excellent despite the name! They do both a fleece/cotton version for warmth or just a cotton one (to keep the sun off).
  • Headwear to include warm hat and sun-cap or wide-brim hat for extra protection from the sun. Mountain Tracks fully supports the wearing of helmets for skiing, although not mandatory for any of our trips we do recommend them.
  • An outer shell jacket made of waterproof and breathable material like Gore-Tex or similar with a built-in hood. The lighter the better and so a shell is recommended rather than an insulated jacket.
  • 1-2 thin fleeces - rather than a thick layer between your skin and the outer shell - an approach which gives better heat retention and good flexibility. These tops are known as ‘mid layers’. The principle of ‘layering’ e.g. allowing you to easily add/remove layers depending on the temperature and the activity is recommended to ensure comfort on the mountain.
  • Insulation layer like a down or Primaloft jacket is a good item to have ready to wear in the event of cold weather, it can live in your rucksack as a spare layer and can come in very handy for sudden changes in the weather.
  • For the lower half it’s essential that you have a pair of thermal base layer pants (long johns).
  • These can then be combined with either:
  • (a) a good pair of ‘technical shell’ pants in a waterproof and breathable fabric like Gore-Tex (b) a pair of mountain or alpine pants in a softshell material together with a pair of lightweight, breathable over trousers with long side zips.
  • Top and bottom underwear made of a synthetic, wicking material. Very popular at the moment are the wool based layers from companies such as Ortovox . They are comfy, breathable and warm when needed and can be worn for days without your friends catching a whiff!
  • Good quality Gore-Tex gloves or mitts and a thin pair of softshell or fleece gloves for when it is hot and for ski touring in. Silk inner gloves can be useful if the weather is cold and you suffer from cold hands.
  • Technical Socks - Investing in good quality ski socks will improve fit, warmth and feel when skiing for long periods. Bring along a few pairs.

For all touring trips it is essential you ski with an all-mountain/freeride type skis, ski touring boots and ski touring bindings. If you have your own skis but they do not have ski touring bindings then you will need to rent skis. The same applies if you have downhill ski boots, you will need to rent ski touring boots. Skis

This winter our lead guides are using Elan skis . Praised by magazine testers and professional skiers alike for its unique blend of lightweight performance, the Ripstick 96 is proven to be the ultimate freeride ski in all snow conditions. The Ripstick 106 is the ultimate freeride ski for any terrain. From boundary line to the base lodge, peak to the parking lot, and trailhead to tailgate this ski excels in all conditions. The new Ripstick Tour 94 is designed on a wider platform, enabling the skier to float better, ski faster, and turn easier in backcountry conditions.

It is built to blend high performance at a low weight, for the perfect mix of freeride downhill performance and efficient ascending capability. With Ripstick Tour 94, the confidence to conquer long ascents and charge challenging descents is the name of the game.

There are many ‘all-mountain/freeride’ skis to choose from and we also recommend skis from Salomon, Dynastar, Movement, Black Crows, Trab Skis, Scott and Volkl.  Look for a ski that is the right size for your height, typically the tip of the ski should be somewhere around your nose height.  As for the width of the ski or “side cut” a mid-fat ski – 90-110mm under the foot is a good place to start; this offers plenty of flotation off-piste while remaining suitable for day tours and they should also handle reasonably well on piste and mixed terrain.

There are plenty of other great skis to choose from so if you’re planning on buying skis for ski touring or general skiing and have any questions do not hesitate to call us, or Lockwoods, to discuss the options available.

If you are planning on buying skis for ski touring and general skiing and have any questions do not hesitate to call us to discuss the options available to you. Boots

It is essential that you have ski touring boots for these trips as walking uphill is much more comfortable in these types of boots with a walk mode and great flex; a dedicated touring boot or a hybrid hike & ride boot is best.

Our guides are using ROXA boots. They recommend R3 ski boots , the lightest high-performance alpine ski boot in its class. The 110 TI is geared for big mountain chargers who may use “Tech” and/or Alpine bindings and often hike or skin to find their lines . The RX Tours is targeted toward skiers who prefer to blaze their own trail and leave the lift lines behind.

Scarpa has led the way in touring boots for many years but they have been joined by other manufacturers like Dynafit, Salomon, Scott, Black Diamond, Dalbello and K2; all producing their own versions of ski touring boot.

• Scarpa’s Freedom boots are their Hybrid offerings, with great ski performance, a walk mode and Vibram sole. Their Maestrale (men’s) and Gea (women’s) boots are also highly recommended. • The Scott Celeste and Cosmo boots have stood the test of time and are good all-around choices. • Salomon’s Quest Max series offer boots with a walk mode in various flex’s with good downhill performance. • Dynafit offer the Mercury or Vulcan boots plus a range of lightweight options like the TLT6. The best of the rest are: Fischer - Transalp Black Diamond – Quadrant and Factor K2 – Pinnacle boot Dalbello – Lupo or Sherpa Langue – XT series offer a ski boot with a walk mode in various flex options Boot Liners These days many manufacturers offer ‘thermo-fit¹ liners as standard equipment. You may also want to consider a custom liner as these are heated and molded to your foot and boot for a perfect fit. They can make all the difference especially if you have trouble finding really comfortable ‘off-the-shelf’ boots. Zipfit liners are a great option for anyone seeking total customisation in fit and comfort. They will replace the original liner. Custom Footbeds Essential kit – to provide additional comfort and ski control. If you want to get footbeds made or a pair of new boots fitted then we suggest you visit somewhere like Profeet for a professional fitting. Don’t forget if you have footbeds in your downhill boots but need to rent touring boots then you can bring the footbeds with you and put them in the hire boots. Bindings For all ski touring trips ski touring bindings are essential. Fritschi and Marker both make excellent ski-touring bindings and you have a few different options to choose from. Many more people are seeing the advantage of the “pin” binding system now offered by a number of manufacturers as these are light and offer ever-improving security despite their minimalist looks!

It’s essential you have ski touring bindings on your skis. Although Pin bindings have been around since the Dynafit Low Tech bindings over 30 years ago since their patent expired the technology has advanced substantially. Salomon, with their Shift Binding, are at the forefront; they’re ‘multi norm compatible’ so fit a selection of boots and are lighter than most freeride bindings. Our lead guides are using the Shift binding this winter, so if you’d like to know more about them give Lockwoods a ring. Ski Poles We recommend telescopic poles. They must have wide powder baskets (4-5 inches/100-120mm diameter) otherwise you’ll be up to your armpits on the ascents. Go for an alloy rather than carbon poles which are lighter but have a nasty habit of snapping near the basket due to ski edge nicks. Rucksack For most ski tours especially multi-day hut-to-hut tours you will need a 35 - 40 litre rucksack . You might get away with a big 30 liter pack if you are an experienced ski tourer and know what to pack. Most people will find a 35-40 liter pack is a good size for touring. Key features of a good ski touring pack:

  • a method of attaching your skis in either an A-frame (one either side) or both together on a diagonal ski carriage
  • easy access into the main compartment without having to empty the sack to get something at the bottom
  • separate pocket for avalanche shovel, handle and probe
  • small top pocket for items like wallet, sunglassed/goggles etc; an ice axe loop
  • built-in rain cover and a secure method of attaching/stowing a ski helmet
  • good hip/waist belt and adjustable shoulder straps

Ortovox Haute Route 40 rucksack will be a good choice for ski touring trips.

Avalanche airbag rucksacks can be used for touring but they are heavy, adding somewhere between 5-8kg just for an empty pack plus canister. So unless you are sure you can carry it and fit all you need in, we do not recommend you use one.

Over a long multiday tour, every gram of weight is important as you have to carry and move it yourself. Carrying a heavy pack will hinder and tire all but the most experienced and fit ski tourer.

  • Ski Skins – these are skins which, now made of artificial fabric, stick to the bottom of your skis and allow you to walk up hill. They must be cut to fit your skis exactly, so if you are bringing your own skis you must provide your own skins.
  • Ski Crampons (aka couteaux) - most ski touring bindings have ski crampons specifically designed for the binding. We always carry these just in case. Again if you are bringing your skis and touring bindings you must provide your own ski crampons.
  • Ice Axe - general lightweight mountaineering / alpine pick. Ideally this needs to be short enough to fit in your pack.
  • Boot Crampons - ideally lightweight aluminum ones although steel crampons are required for more demanding tours
  • Climbing Harness - a simple lightweight harness. The key feature is that it should have fully adjustable leg loops for putting on over ski boots, crampons, etc.
  • Helmet - Some people choose to ski tour with a helmet, this is up to you. If you bring a Normal ski helmet they are heavy to carry. Many manufacturers now have lightweight ski touring helmets that work well.

The “Safety Trilogy” - required on all our ski tours and off-piste courses.

  • Avalanche Transceiver/Beacon
  • Snow shovel
  • Avalanche probe

We recommend Simple and intuitive ORTOVOX AVALANCHE RESCUE KIT 3+

Remember it is not enough just to carry this equipment; you have to know how to use it.

How about joining one of our specialist avalanche courses – check out  www.mountaintracks.co.uk/activity/avalanche-training

  • Good pair of ski goggles with a lens for low light is essential in the event of snow and poor visibility
  • Good quality sunglasses with 100% UV protection
  • 35 – 40 liter rucksack
  • 1 – 1.5 Liter water bottle – we don’t recommend hydration systems (e.g. camelbak) in winter as they can freeze.
  • Food – bring some of your favorite hill nibbles (chocolate, energy bars)*
  • Suncream and lip salve
  • Camera with a large capacity memory card!
  • Money – most hotels, shops and restaurants accept credit cards, but not all the alpine huts do. You should allow about 30-40 Swiss Francs or 20-30 Euros per day for lunch and drinks (amount approximate and depends on consumption)
  • Lightweight sleeping bag liner – now compulsory in most huts.
  • Wash kit with small personal first aid items – should include:
  • Toothbrush and paste - a mini one is ideal
  • Anti-bacterial hand cleaner
  • Wet wipes – essential to try to maintain hygiene
  • Tissues and toilet roll
  • Plasters – of various sizes and possibly some adhesive wound dressings.
  • Pain Killers – aspirin or Paracetamol/Nurofen
  • Antiseptic cream or wipes
  • Blister kit – compeed and elastic tape to hold it in place (essential)!
  • (Note: Guides will have comprehensive first aid kits and are qualified in mountain first aid)
  • Small light quick dry towel e.g. a Lifeventure Soft fiber towel
  • Most huts have limited washing facilities
  • Earplugs – it can get quite noisy!
  • Headtorch - lightweight and carry spare batteries.
  • Book, pack of cards and or Ipod/MP3 player – It’s nice to have something to read or listen to when you are in the huts or to challenge your fellow travelers to a game of card. These items are not essential but if you have space you might appreciate them.

Food and Water We suggest you bring with you or buy in resort snack food that you can take out on the hill with you each day. Things like cereal bars, dried fruit and nuts, chocolate, sugary sweets or your favorite hill snacks. When you’re staying overnight in huts its best to take supplies for the days you are away. Huts do sell food but it’s expensive and sometimes stocks run low. If you have any food allergies or dietary requirements especially if you are a Coeliac (Gluten free) or have a dairy allergy we strongly recommend you bring some food with you that you can supplement your dinners with. The huts are fairly good at providing for vegetarians but less so for other dietary needs. You have to buy bottled water in the huts as usually any running water is non-potable. Bottled water is expensive in French and Swiss huts; you can be paying upto 12-16CHF per 1.5L bottle of water. So please ensure you budget for this cost.

  • Ski Touring - Hiring Most resorts have ski shops that hire ski equipment and we try to provide relevant contact details for all our courses and tours. Prices do change by resort/country, but here’s an approximate guide to hire costs for 6-days hire: Touring Skis plus skins and ski crampons €150-180 Touring boots €80-90  Boot Crampons €45-50 Ice Axe €30-40 Harness €20-30 Helmet €20-30 Transceiver/shovel/probe €75-80 Our guides also generally have additional sets of safety equipment (transceiver/shovel/probe) which they hire out to clients for €65 for 6 days hire. Must be booked in advance.

It is a condition of booking that you are insured for your chosen activity and the cover must include medical expenses, personal accident, personal liability, third party risks and rescue (including helicopter rescue). You are strongly advised also to take out cover against cancellation and curtailment.

For UK residents Ski Club Travel Insurance may be a suitable option.

For more details and to purchase a policy online visit http://www.skiclubinsurance.co.uk/ If you need assistance arranging your personal insurance please let us know.

It is a condition of booking that you are fully vaccinated (unless exempt) and you comply with the entry rules to a destination country.

The starting point for this trip is Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro.

The taxi transfer to the first hotel will take place from Podgorica (TGD) airport.

All our ski tours are led by our team of IFMGA Mountain Guides. The team is led by Olly Allen, Matt Dickinson and Nick Parks.

Skills & Stamina

Skill level.

Off-Piste Coaching

Our Introductory level is suitable for people who can ski red and black pistes in resorts without problems and you can deal with moguls and some ice. You will be new to off-piste skiing or maybe have dabbled a little on the sides of the piste or even attended a previous off-piste specific course. You would like to ski powder snow with confidence and learn to link turns off-piste in a variety of terrain as well as being able to control your speed and adjust your turn radius.

Ski Touring

Introductory level ski touring trips are appropriate for people looking for their first touring experience. The pace is relaxed and typically we skin for 2-4hrs per day so ascents are about 500 - 800m vertical. You need to be a reasonable off-piste skier (at our Off-Piste Development level), able to link controlled parallel turns in powder snow and ski through trees in control. You need to be prepared to hike short sections on foot carrying your skis on your rucksack (though you won’t need any specific mountaineering knowledge, so crampons and an ice axe are usually not required).

Off-Piste Coaching and Adventure  For our Intermediate graded off-piste ski courses and trips you will have at least a couple of weeks off-piste skiing experience and /or received some previous instructions on an off-piste specific course. You can link 10-12 turns together in reasonable control, speed and style, following the fall line in most conditions. If you’re looking to improve your technique in deeper snow and steeper slopes then our Off-Piste Coaching Development trips are for you. These are instructor-led courses.

If you want to get some miles under your skis then look at our Off-Piste Adventure Intermediate trips which are led by our team of Mountain Guides. On the Adventure courses you can expect to hike or ski tour short distances to get to better snow and terrain, although no  previous ski touring experience is required.

These tours will involve around 3-5hrs of skinning per day, achieving around 800 – 1000m of vertical ascent. We would expect you to be able skin to a pace of 300m of vertical ascent per hour. You need to be able to execute good uphill kick turns on steeper slopes and have some familiarity with use of crampons and ice axe. You need to be a reasonably strong off-piste skier able to deal with a variety of snow conditions (powder, crust, slush) and able to ski on steeper and narrower slopes with the requisite ability and confidence for exposed sections.

For our Advanced Off-Piste Coaching courses you should be an excellent piste skier and have many years experience of skiing off-piste. You should be able to ski off-piste in most conditions linking controlled parallel turns, ski bumpy terrain, trees, narrow gullies and enjoy pushing yourself to achieve new things. Your skiing should be reasonably fluid and autonomous i.e. you can already adapt your turn radius and speed to the terrain and snow conditions off-piste. This course will focus on the technical and tactical skills to ski steep terrain, jump turns and line choice as well as refreshing your avalanche skills and mountain safety. The mission is for your skiing to become more dynamic and reactive!

You are an experienced and confident off-piste skier able to handle most snow types and conditions, you can ski steep slopes (30 degrees+) and make short turns in gullies and ski through trees. These skills have been learned over a number of years of skiing off-piste with mountain guides or experienced groups of friends. You are happy to ski tour to access descents and better snow, so you will have previously used ski touring equipment and can do effective and safe uphill kick turns. You aspire to ski the best snow available and are happy to push yourself to reach the best snow and terrain.

Advanced-level tours are for experienced ski tourers who’ve previously completed another hut-to-hut trip or multiple day tours. A large proportion of the terrain may be steep and exposed; thus confidence in your uphill kick turns on 35+ degree slopes is a must, as is your ability to ski slopes of 40 degrees. You will be a strong, fluid off-piste skier able to handle all conditions. You will be confident of using crampons and an ice axe and happy scrambling/climbing on snow and rock on short climbs to summits, and in gullies to gain a col.

You can ski fluidly and autonomously on all terrain. You often ski couloirs and gullies and seek out steep slopes and you can jump turn in narrow couloirs and have experience of abseiling and sideslipping on steep terrain. You can ski fast with fluid ‘freeride’ style turns and can jump off small rocks and ski trees with no fear or problems. You are happy to ski tour and hike to reach the best snow and terrain and you should have some basic knowledge of using crampons and ice axe. Your aims are to push your skills and challenge yourself further.

Expert level ski tours are pure ski mountaineering journeys in the high mountains. You must be confident skiing steep exposed terrain and ski touring for at least 5 hours per day with long ascents. You will be expected to climb on your feet carrying your skis on your pack to summit mountains above 4000m in altitude. You must be completely confident with your crampon placement and use of an ice axe and you will have some basic rope skills and be happy walking along exposed ridges on mixed terrain to gain the summits of peaks.

Stamina Level

  • Level 1 You are fit enough to ski all day with only short stops for food and drink. You can ski off-piste all day without being too tired at the end of the day; you can ski in this way for multiple days on your holiday. You can also hike or ski tour for around 2 hours per day. You’re used to doing cardiovascular exercise 3 to 4 times a week (bike, run, gym) to maintain your fitness, and you’re able to push yourself if needed for short periods of time at a higher rate than usual.

You can ski all day comfortably off-piste with only short stops for food and drink, you can do this for multiple days on your holiday. If necessary you can ski tour for around 1-2 hrs up hill plus your happy to do a few short hikes to access good snow with your skis on your shoulder or rucksack. Your stamina and endurance fitness is good and you work hard to maintain a good level of fitness. You will be exercising 3-4 times a week and also at the weekend; thus running a half marathon, doing a 50 mile cycle ride, 3-4 hours on a mountain bike or a full day’s hill walk would all prove possible with this stamina level.

You can ski all day comfortably and will be expected to ascend on skis at around 400m/hr and be able to skin for at least 5hrs with up to 1000m to 1300m of ascent per day.

Balkan Expeditions

Montenegro Ski Touring

  • Prokletije Mountain Range
  • Intermediate

This is a shorter version of our famed Balkans’ Freeride adventure, with slight alterations. It is aimed at those who don’t have the full 10 days or might not be physically ready for the longer, 10-day adventure.

The ski touring is based on the Prokletije Mountain Range and National Park. This location, during winter months, guarantees abundance of powder snow and absence of people – ME’s obvious choice! During the tour you will also venture into both Kosovo and Albania, while touring up and down the three 2300+ m peaks we chose for you.

Please note that while desirable, previous ski touring experience is not essential. If you have never tried ski touring but you are comfortable skiing on intermediate difficulty ski slopes and you are physically fit, then you can do this tour. A number of different routes, to suit everybody’s ski level, are available on each mountain. Regardless of your skill level, upon arrival our experienced guides (members of Montenegrin mountain rescue service) will always give you full ski touring training, both theoretical and practical.

Please note that the skiing distances are our recommendation and are tailored for intermediate level skiers. Both, distances and routes can be altered to best suit your level and desire for longer or shorter tours. On touring days, elevation gains range between 500 m and 1500 m. On all the ski tour days we will set off after breakfast, around 9 am. Lunch will be on the go and will consist mainly of high energy snacks to sustain you during the touring. Upon return from each of the ski tours, you will have a locally prepared cooked dinner. All evenings on tour days will be spent relaxing in the warmth of the accommodation with a drink or two.

  • Bespoke, all-inclusive ski tour holiday
  • Experience ski touring in the untouched wilderness and powder snow, and some of the Balkans’ most beautiful mountains
  • Tour across three countries
  • Ski on 3 imposing peaks, all above 2300 m
  • Experienced bilingual guides (Montenegrin and English)
  • Transport, including airport pickup and drop-off from any Montenegrin airport
  • 5 nights’ accommodation (hotel and mountain lodge)
  • All food – 5 dinners, 5 breakfasts and snacks
  • Ski touring equipment
  • Transport to and back from Plav
  • Alpine touring skis or splitboard
  • Avalanche rescue equipment (beacon, shovel, probe)
  • First-aid kit
  • Warm mountain clothing
  • Large backpack and a smaller day pack
  • Hiking shoes
  • Sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle

Our meeting point is the town Plav. Plav is appoximately a 2:30 hour drive from Podgorica and a 4:30 hour drive from Tivat.

In Montenegrin, “tromedja” means – a place between three countries. Mountain Bogicevica forms a boundary between Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo, with the highest peak Tromedja at 2366 m. On this day, the tour will take us to the top of Tromedja, venturing from the Montenegro side into both Albania and Kosovo. The round trip takes around 6 hours and is 10 km long.

Peak Starac is 2501 m high is the highest peak of this Mountain, and it offers some of the best unobscured views of the Western Balkans! Arguably, this is also one of the best freerides in Montenegro – a wide, 5 km downhill track with a 30° slope! This is also the longest of the 3 tours – 10 km and 5 hours.

Peak Pasji stands at 2405 m, and to reach its top there is a 900 m elevation gain from our starting point. This makes it challenging but rewarding to those who complete the ascent, as they will be granted extraordinary views of the Šar Mountains in Macedonia and Korab Mountain in Albania! The total length of the tour is 10 km and takes 5 hours to complete.

As our special treat to you and to distinguish the adventure, this tour day is only available for this and not the Balkan’s Freeride adventure package.

On the last day, we will drop you off back to Plav, for the departure. If you are staying longer in Montenegro, you can always join us on another adventure 😊

Best Ski Resorts in Montenegro

ski tour montenegro

Montenegro is famous not only for the beauties of the coast and beach holidays, but also winter resorts, which so far many do not know about, but in vain.

An active winter holiday in Montenegro gives a lot of pleasure, as there are still few tourists here, and the views that open from the height of the mountains are simply gorgeous. In addition, unlike other winter resorts, prices in Montenegro are several times lower, but the quality meets all European standards.

Despite the fact that tourism began to develop here relatively recently, ski Montenegro may well already compete with some winter resorts in Europe, but we will talk about this later.

Winter resorts in Zabljak

Zabljak (Žabljak), as an urban settlement, began to form in 1871, right at the foot of the Durmitor Mountains, where the national park of the same name was formed in 1952. It is believed that the name Durmitor comes from the Celtic words "dru mi tore", which means "mountain full of water." In addition, Zabljak is considered the highest city in Southeast Europe in terms of location and rises to 1456 meters above sea level, while it is surrounded by 23 mountain peaks, more than 2200 meters high. The highest peak is Bobotov Kuk, height 2523 m. The area of Zabljak is very picturesque because only 2.5 km from the city is the Black Lake, and 22 km from the deepest canyon in Europe and the equally famous Djurdjevica Bridge. Therefore, here you can combine both an active winter holiday and walks with admiring nature. Fresh mountain air, glacial lakes, and rich flora will give you the answer to the question of why true nature lovers come back here again.

In the municipality of Zabljak, all the features of the Alpine climate are expressed: the winter is very long and cold, with a lot of snow, which is present here for about 120 days a year, and the summer is short and fresh.

As for the ski slopes, there are 12, but we will consider the best ones:

The steepest descent, the length of which is 3500 meters, and the height difference is 700 meters. The total length of the ski slopes is 4.7 km, and the capacity is up to 3,000 skiers per hour. The Savin Kuk ski resort has three blue runs (2.8 km), one red run (1.1 km), one black run (800 m) and a children's run.

Stutz (Štuoc)

This track is suitable for all skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, but its length is slightly shorter and is only 1760 m. However, the views there are quite picturesque, so many people prefer to ride on this track. At the moment, this route is not functioning due to unsettled property and legal relations after its transfer into the hands of a private company, which is still postponing the improvement of the route.

The slope for beginners is only 800 m long. However, the slope is illuminated, and the ski center has a restaurant-guest house, ski schools, and rental services.

To sum up, there are 12 tracks in total in Zabljak, with a total length of about 14 km. Of these: black trails – 2 km; red trails – 4 km; blue – 8 km. Trails for children are built separately from adults.

The resort of Zabljak is equipped with ski lifts, chairlifts, and children's lifts. Of these, Savin Kuk has 2 chairlifts, 3 rope tows and 1 children's lift; the Yavorovach track – 2 ski lifts and 1 for children; Shtuts – 2 ski lifts and 1 for children, but so far, as we indicated above, they do not work.

Savin Kuk ski lifts:

  • Ski tow T-lift «Snowboard» rises to a height of 1600 meters. Travel time is approximately 4:20 minutes. Carrying capacity – 1000 people.
  • Ski tow T-lift "Dernek" goes a little higher. The peak point is 1688 meters. The ascent takes about 6 minutes.
  • The double lift "Savin Kuk 1" rises to the mark of 1907 meters in just 11 minutes. On the way, you can enjoy the most beautiful views of the Durmitor Mountains.
  • The double chair lift "Savin Kuk 2" will take you to the highest point of 2213 meters. You can transfer to it using the previous lift. The ascent is quite steep, and no less fascinating. The rise time is approximately 4 minutes.
  • Ski tow T-lift "Panalj" goes to a height of 1702 meters in 4 minutes 20 seconds. Throughput - 500 people per hour.
  • Children's rope lift is only 150 meters long. The height of the end point is 1528 meters, the initial one is 1523. Carrying capacity: 400 people.

The lifts working hours are daily from 10:00 to 16:00, night skiing from 18:00 to 21:00.

The ski season usually starts from the middle of December and ends on March 31st.

Prices winter season 2022/2023 Zabljak

*Night skiing is not included in other ski passes by default, so if you want to ski in the evening you will need to buy a separate ski pass.

Equipment rent

If you do not have your own ammunition, then you can easily rent it at reasonable prices. A standard category kit will cost you about 5-7 euros, and a premium category kit 8-10 euros/day. There is also an opportunity to hire an instructor if you want to learn how to ski in Montenegro.

When planning a winter holiday in Montenegro, it is best to fly to Podgorica airport, as it is closest to the ski resorts. The distance from Podgorica to Zabljak is approximately 125 km. If you arrive at Tivat airport , then you will have to get a little longer (about 200 km). Moreover, in winter, the temperature on the coast of Montenegro is always above zero , but in the North there is below zero, so you can get into a temperature trap, arriving at +15, and then go skiing at -20.

Accommodation

In Zabljak, apartments, chalets, and guesthouses are in demand, which you can rent from 20 EUR per day. But also here you can find hotels of both the budget and the elite segment, so the choice here depends on the size of your wallet. Accommodation in hotels will cost you about 50 EUR per day. If you are traveling with a group, then we advise you to immediately rent the whole house so that the atmosphere is even more charming.

Ski lifts (cable cars)

Resort Kolasin 1450 is equipped with 6 ski lifts, one of which is for children. As we noted above, their capacity is 5500 riders, so you definitely won’t have to stand in line for a long time.

  • The chairlift "Vilina Voda" is the newest in the resort 1450. Designed for 6 people, it rises to a height of 1841 m in about 4 and a half minutes. Throughput — 2800 people / hour.
  • Double chairlift "Ćupovi" is slower. It rises to a height of 1890 meters in about 13 minutes. Capacity — 1300 people.
  • Ski lift "Jezerine" works only when there is an increased demand.
  • Ski lift "Carev do" goes to a height of 1549 m, and the travel time is 3 and a half minutes. The capacity of the ski lift is 400 people/hour. Only open during times of high demand.
  • Ski lift "Ključ" takes snowboarders and skiers from a height of 1796 m to 1911 m. Travel time is approximately 3 minutes 20 seconds.
  • Rope lift "Baby lift" — designed for children. The height of the end point is 1455 meters.

In the resort Kolasin 1600, only one K8 lift has been built so far — "Troglava", designed for 6 people. The height of the end point is 2035 meters, and the beginning is at around 1574 meters. The length of the cable car is 1642 meters. The ascent takes about 6 minutes. Designed for 2600 people.

To sum up, there are only 7 lifts in the Kolasin resorts: 3 ski lifts, 3 chairlifts and 1 children's lift. The total carrying capacity is 8100 people per hour.

Opening hours: from 9:30 to 16:00. There is no night skiing in Kolasin.

Ski touring adventure in intact nature of gorgeous montenegro..

Ski touring will take place in the northeast and east of Montenegro in the youngest national, but wild and unspoiled park Prokletije . The Prokletije mountains are part of the National park with the same name, also known as the Albanian Alps or Accursed mountains. They are a mountainous area on the western Balkan Peninsula , stretching from northern Albania to Kosovo and eastern Montenegro . The highest peak is Maja Jezerce (2694 m) . They are mighty and inaccessible in winter. That is why this is the last piece of the European ski touring wilderness . The terrains are downright fantastic for ski touring. Not to mention the culture , the friendliness of the locals and the excellent cuisine.

Most tours start at an altitude of 1500 m and go up to 2500 m, and the terrain is such that it allows descents on all sides of the mountain. All tours will be carried out from two starting points, depending on the condition of the snow cover. These are the area of Hajla and the Bogičevica mountain. The main destinations of the touring ski week will be Hajla (2403 m) and Tromeđa (2366 m) .

This will be followed by accommodating in a cottage and lunch, and in the afternoon departure for a short tour, where we will also repeat the basics of rescuing from avalanches.

DAY 3 - 4: Ski touring tours in vicinity of Hajla.

The tours will be adapted to snow, avalanche and weather conditions. The tours will last for a period of 5 to 8 hours, where 800 to 1500 altitude meters will be overcome. Depending on the previously mentioned conditions, the tour can also be done by making a double ascent in the same area in the given weather conditions. We will definitely aim for peaks such as Hajla (2403 m) , Ahmica (2272 m) and others and cross the border to Kosovo , which lies in the immediate vicinity.

We will be guaranteed full board in the cottage.

DAY 5: Descend to Rožaje, transport to Plav and ascend on Babino polje.

After breakfast we will ski to the Bandžov meadow , where we will be transported to Rožaje . From there we will go with our vehicle to the town of Plav , where we will buy things in the store for the next touring ski destination above Babino polje (1530 m) . With 4 x 4 vehicles we will drive from the town of Plav to Babino polje (1530 m) and from there follow the ascent with loading all our luggage to our cottage. We will stay in a private cottage for 10 people (1720 m) , which allows you to prepare your own meals and it will be our starting point for the next tours. This will be followed by accommodating in the cottage, dinner and preparations for the next day.

DAY 6 -7: Ski touring tours over the mountain Bogičevica.

The tours will be adapted to snow, avalanche and weather conditions. The tours will last for a period of 5 to 8 hours, where 800 to 1500 altitude meters will be overcome. Depending on the previously mentioned conditions, the tour can also be done by making a double ascent in the same areain the given weather conditions. We will definitely aim for peaks such as Tromeđa (2366 m) , Pasji vrh (2372 m) and others, and we will cross the border either to Kosovo or to Albania , which lies in the immediate vicinity.

After your arrival in Montenegro, you can either catch a taxi waiting outside the airport to the hotel or request for transport to be arranged through us. At the meeting point you will meet with your local guide Emir Cirikovic and fellow group members. Here we will have some fun getting to know each other and make our way to Plav via a 2 hour transfer.

ski tour montenegro

After breakfast, we will take a short transfer to Grebaje, Montenegro. Here, we will hike what is believed to be one of the most beautiful hikes in the Accursed Mountain Range. Not only does the hike have some of the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains, but it is an awesome way to warm your legs up for the rest of the trip. This hike is a loop trail that takes you over two famous peaks on the border of Montenegro and Albania. For an in depth account of this hike visit Grebaje’s Greatest Hike.

ski tour montenegro

This hike is special because we will be visiting the most beautiful lake in all of Montenegro, Lake Hrid. Local legend says that swimming in this alpine lake brings good health and good luck in marriage. Nestled in a thick pine forest, Lake Hrid is the perfect place to take a break and cool down after hiking. Here in the wilderness you will feel completely isolated from the outside world. After, enjoying the lake finish hiking to Plav. For an in depth account of this hike visit Babino Polje, Lake Hrid to Plav .

ski tour montenegro

This hike starts off with a steep climb to the peak of Tromeda (meeting of three points) where the borders of Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo meet. After this hike, you can proudly say you have stood in three countries at once. This hike features panoramic views and endless mountain meadows. We will follow the border of Kosovo and Montenegro for a while. Then, we will enter Kosovo, wrapping around some peaks and beginning decent into the Montenegrin village of Babino Polje. For a more in depth account of this hike visit  Doberdol to Babino Polje .

ski tour montenegro

Get ready to tackle the highest peak in Kosovo. On this hike we will leave the village Doberdol in Albania and cross into Kosovo to conquer it’s highest peak. The trail leads past countless alpine lakes that make for good swimming in the summer months. Located far above the tree line, the views from the top are far and wide. Once you sign your name into history at the top, we will begin out decent back to Doberdol. For a more in depth account of this hike visit  Doberdol to Gjeravica .

ski tour montenegro

The day will begin with a short transfer to the summer village of Cerem. From Cerem we will begin the hike to the isolated village of Doberdol. This hike begins with a climb through the forest and back to the border of Montenegro where we will enter briefly then return back into Albania. This hike mainly features strolling through enchanted old growth forests. Get mesmerized in deep thought and reflection as the pine needles slip beneath your feet and the wind makes song through the trees. Towards the end of the hike we will get out of the forest and pass a few huts where villagers live the same way as the countless generations before them. This makes for the perfect place to rest and have coffee. A small decent and climb will lead us to the village of Doberdol. For a more in depth account of this hike visit  Cerem to Doberdol .

ski tour montenegro

This is the most famous hike in the Accursed Mountain range and for good reason. This hike connecting the Albanian villages of Theth and Valbona features trails that wind in and out of old growth forests and a jaw-dropping panoramic view at the top. The first half of the hike will be a climb to the Valbona pass, followed by the sweet decent into Valbona Valley. For an in depth account of this hike visit  Theth to Valbona .

ski tour montenegro

Start the day off with a half hour transfer from Grebaje to Vusanje. Next, the hike from Vusanje to Theth begins. At the start of the hike the group will stop at a couple monumental highlights of the area, Grla waterfall and The Grasshopper’s Eye, a natural water spring that resembles a blue eye. The hike will continue into Ropojana valley, featuring the famous Lake of Ropojan. Here we will pass the border into Albania. After the lake, there will be a forest climb leading into the spectacular meadow of Runica, nestled in a great bowl of mountain peaks. The hike continues through these spectacular valleys dotted with alpine lakes until we make our final decent into the village Theth. For an in depth account of this hike visit  Vusanje to Theth .

Don't know where to start? Then check our recommendations.

Modernly equipped ski resorts - your next destination!

Investments in ski resort infrastructure have propelled Montenegro to the forefront of European winter sports destinations. And as an added bonus, the prices are significantly lower than in other more developed European ski resorts, making your vacation more affordable.

Is Kolašin a must-see on the map of your favorite ski resorts?

Montenegro invites you to Kolašin, the unavoidable mountain Bjelasica! Here, the season begins in December! The ski centers Kolašin 1600 and Kolašin 1450 are among the most modern in Europe, as well as the most popular in Montenegro. Together, they offer you 45 kilometers of ski trails, which are set up in compliance to the highest European ski standards.

Do you like to ski or snowboard? Whatever your preference, there is a six-seater cable car that takes you to the peak of Troglava, home to numerous well-kept trails. At an elevation of 2,035 meters, you are guaranteed to have a one-of-a-kind experience of the Bjelasica panorama!

Enjoying the beautiful surroundings can increase your appetite, so why not stop by one of the cozy restaurants located within the ski resorts? Taste the delicacies prepared in the traditional manner while surrounded by the warmth of the fire and the fragrance of beech wood. We recommend kačamak - a delicious dish made with potatoes or corn, several different kinds of cheese, and kajmak (clotted cream.) It smells like tradition!

Žabljak - family favorite destination!

Spend your vacation on Žabljak! Why? Because this is the best starting point for exploring the Durmitor National Park and enjoying the slopes of the mountain peak Savin Kuk , with 4.6 kilometers of groomed ski trails, including blue, red, and black trails, as well as bunny slopes for kids and beginners.

Important note! Don't miss out on a night skiing adventure under the spotlights! Enjoy a memorable ski and take in the sights under the open starry sky, which you will remember forever!

Ski Tour Fest 2024

About ski tour fest.

Ski Tour Fest is the first and only event of its kind in the Balkans. It gives its participants the opportunity to ski on little known, yet some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe. It also promotes cultural exchange between the participants and numerous locals involved with the festival. The festival takes place on four mountains Hajla, Bogićevica and Prokletije, and in three countries - Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo. All locations are special, yet different and vast enough to leave large areas unconquered for future visits and festivals.

Our aim is to keep running the festival, while maintaining it relatively small, organic, and uncommercial. This gives us, the organisers, a chance to dedicate time and establish true bonds with all the participants.

Ski Tour Fest is a truly unique event that brings together likeminded people with a passion for mountains and skiing. We hope that you can join this year and share this amazing experience with us!

Viking IPO: Key Facts Behind the Luxury Cruise Operator’s Billion-Dollar Debut

Sean O'Neill , Skift

April 30th, 2024 at 6:37 PM EDT

Wednesday's IPO will value Viking, an operator of luxury river and ocean cruises, at roughly $10 billion. Leaders in the luxury travel sector will be eyeing the move closely.

Sean O'Neill

Viking , an operator of river and ocean cruises, and a group of shareholders were set to raise more than $1 billion in an initial public offering on Wednesday.

When the stock begins trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VIK, the Bermuda-based luxury travel company anticipates that the price per share will be between $21 and $25.

The company and its shareholders will offer 53 million shares .

10 Facts About Viking’s IPO and Strategy

  • The IPO will enrich chairman, CEO, and co-founder Torstein Hagen, 81, who will control a slim majority of Viking shares. The public debut will make Hagen worth roughly $5 billion , according to Bloomberg estimates.
  • Hagen began Viking in 1997 with four river ships. Today, the company sails 80 river vessels, averaging 190 passengers each. It also has nine ocean-sailing ships, which typically hold about 900 passengers, making them relatively smaller than traditional ocean vessels. The company has three other vessels, such as those used to cruise the Nile in Egypt.
  • Viking wasn’t profitable last year. It reported a $1.86 billion loss in its 2023 fiscal year. But it said that was related to one-time losses. The company reported about $1.09 billion in adjusted EBITDA in its SEC filings.
  • The company targets well-off travelers, typically those above age 55. Its average revenue per passenger last year was $7,2501.
  • The company stands apart from traditional ocean cruise lines. Don’t expect to see water slides or casinos on board. Small children are often banned.
  • The company claims it served one out of four luxury cruise-goers on ocean cruises last year out of a market of about 1.1 million. Competitor brands include Oceania, Silversea, Seabourn, and Regent.
  • The company claims to have served one out of two river cruise travelers last year, out of a market of 700,000 passengers. Rivals include Grand Circle.
  • About 90% of Viking’s guests are from North America. Most of its cruise ship itineraries are in Europe and Antarctica, but it has routes worldwide.
  • Viking said it may use some of the capital from the IPO to help expand its offerings to land-based tours and excursions. It will also use some of the capital to pay down its debt, which was $5.4 billion in December.
  • Viking has 24 new ships on order, with options for 12 more. It plans to enter China and other markets. (For more on the company, see Viking’s filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission .)
