Slowdive Announces Spring 2024 North American Tour with Drab Majesty

  • December 6, 2023
  • post-punk.com

Following their successful fall 2023 tour supporting their long-awaited fifth studio album,  “Everything Is Alive,” British shoegaze heroes Slowdive are poised to continue captivating their devoted fanbase with a new set of tour dates in 2024. The album, released on September 1, 2023, has been a commercial triumph and critical darling, securing top ten spots in several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Notable singles from the album, such as “Kisses,” “Skin in the Game,” “The Slab,” and “Alife,” have further cemented Slowdive’s reputation for creating deeply textured and emotionally engaging music.

The spring 2024 tour will see Slowdive returning to the US, building on the momentum of their fall 2023 tour. This time, they’re set to headline the Sick New World festival and perform in several cities missed in their previous run. Anticipation is high for shows in Texas (Austin, Houston, Dallas), the Southwest (Phoenix, Albuquerque), New Orleans, Kansas City, Atlanta, and the unique subterranean venue, The Caverns, in Tennessee.

Enhancing the tour’s allure is the inclusion of Drab Majesty as the opening act. Known for their distinct post-punk and goth-infused sound, Drab Majesty gained recent acclaim with their EP “ An Object in Motion.” The EP’s lead single, “Vanity,” featuring Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, has been particularly well-received, offering a rare blend of Goswell’s ethereal vocals with Drab Majesty’s darker tones.

Recent tour reviews

I'm a big fan of the band, my expectations were sky high. They started playing songs from the last album, which I love, but nevertheless the energy was very low. It was leaving me cold. Until they played one of their greatest classics. From that moment I began to float (and I think I was not the only one) throughout the room. Heavenly Experience.

Okay... So this is actually my first time seeing any shoegaze band live... But from what I have seen about other major shoegaze bands on the Internet I can guarantee that Slowdive is a first-rate watch. Everything from the playing to the lighting were done impeccably and to the taste. Rachel and Niel were excellent performers, but I must own that my favourite musician of the group was Nick the bassist. The man's entirely of his own world and class. When he's on stage he's so drowned in his own playing it's as if no shit of this world can ever touch him. I also had a quick exchange with the band after they came off the stage. All five of them were nice and interesting to talk to, especially Rachel. Anyway, I guess I now consider myself a total "Slowdivemaniac", if there ever is such a word.

i have only heard of slowdive recently, and decided to go to their concert, i liked the music and the visuals, it would go see them again, overall a good show.

the only negative was that the vocals were a bit drowned out, not sure if that was due to acoustics at the venue or sound control. Rachel Goswell has a great voice, so it would have been nice to hear her better

SLOWDIVE + WHITELANDS – BRIGHTON DOME 16.2.24

Shoegaze legends Slowdive opened their sold-out UK tour with a gig at the Brighton Dome on Friday. Accompanied by London-based four piece Whitelands , Slowdive played a set primarily composed of material from their new release ‘Everything Is Alive’ and their 2017 self-titled comeback album, plus a few classics from 1993’s landmark album ‘Souvlaki’.

slowdive tour support

Whitelands are a representative of the 2010’s shoegaze revival, having released their first album in 2018. Their presence as opening act reflects how shoegaze has had a large upswing in popularity within younger generations in the last few years: while the genres’ qualities made it a bad fit for radio at the time of its development in the early 90s, younger generations are most likely to be exposed to it via sings such as Cocteau Twins ’ ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’ or Slowdive’s own ‘When the Sun Hits’ going viral on platforms such as TikTok, and then in turn having streaming services like Spotify to discover the large body of work from the last 30 years within the genre at their own pace, despite most of it flying under the radar upon original release.

This was exemplified in the bands’ performance of their most recent single ‘Tell Me About It’, a song mixing driving drums and bass with falsetto vocals. The song combines shoegaze reverberating guitars with pop hooks and groovy drums influenced by early 90s “baggy” acts, displaying how younger acts have the benefit of immediate access to large amounts of past music and so are able to mix and match influences that in their own time would’ve been seen as more insular due to the overarching tribalism of music scenes at the time. The bands’ music is driven by vocalist/lead guitarist Etienne’s melodic vocals and leads, self-described as “soulgaze”, married to an ethereally danceable backbeat on songs such as recent single ‘Setting Sun’, and their strong performance hopefully bodes well for their upcoming second album.

Whitelands: Etienne Quartey-Papafio – vocals, rhythm guitar Michael Adelaja – lead guitar Vanessa Govinden – bass Jagun Meseorisa – drums

Whitelands setlist: ‘How It Feels’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘Born In Understanding’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘Setting Sun’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘Cheer’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘ The Prophet And I’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘Tell Me About It’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album) ‘Now Here’s The Weather’ (from 2024 ‘Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ album)

Slowdive opened with the new song ‘Shanty’ , a number featuring waves of guitar noise and a keyboard counter-melody that builds on their work with Brian Eno on ‘Souvlaki’ to create an atmospheric yet lively groove, showing how the bands’ unexpected second wind reflected the development of the genre over their 20 years of absence. This was followed by the energetic ‘Star Roving’ from their 2017 album, introduced with a false start and vocalist Rachel Goswell’s leviticus bantering about being dry-throated which “women of a certain age” could relate to, and the first half of the set continued with alternating songs from their newest effort and the 2017 release.

The main set concluded with a trio of numbers from ‘Souvlaki’: the ethereal classic ‘Alison’, plus belated hit ‘When The Sun Hits’ and ‘40 Days’ , each of which managed to recapture the ambiences of the original recordings in a busier live environment. The crowd were especially appreciative hearing these classics live, and the band stopped before returning with an encore featuring streaming hit ‘Sugar For The Pill’ and Syd Barrett cover ‘Golden Hair’ . Barrett has long been a reference point to iconoclasts from the Jesus and Mary Chain to the Mystery Jets, and Slowdive’s cover was a remarkable re-working bringing the plangent chords and melody of the original into a shoegaze format before using that as a launchpad for a rousing freakout with tribal drums and effervescent guitars while the backing projection showed morphing versions of Barretts’ visage. This reflected how Slowdive, a band 25 years removed from Barrett in their heyday, have embodied the undercurrent in British music of insightfully depressive soft rock and its changing nature. Overall, Slowdive played a brilliant set with plenty for both original fans and new converts to like, with a smartly picked setlist and great live sound that the audience responded to welcomingly.

The hazy new song is the final preview of the shoegaze band’s new album ‘Everything Is Alive’, which is out Friday (September 1) via Dead Oceans.

Alongside the single announcement, Slowdive have announced a new string of UK and European dates for January 2024, which will see them kick off the run at Paradiso in Amsterdam on January 16, 2024.

From there, they’ll perform shows in Paris, Oslo, Berlin, Munich and more, before starting their UK run at Dome, Brighton on February 14. Following stops in cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and more – along with a show at London’s Eventim Apollo on February 17 – they’ll wrap up at Manchester’s Academy on February 27.

We are also very pleased to announce our UK and European tour in 2024. For tickets and further information visit -> https://t.co/IRPFlDHjnH pic.twitter.com/UV1RBM6FW2 — Slowdive (@slowdiveband) August 30, 2023

Speaking about new single ‘alife’, singer, lyricist and guitarist Neil Halstead said: “‘alife’ is one of the first tunes we finished for the record. Shawn Everett did a really nice job with the mix. We tried so many times to figure out a good mix by ourselves and couldn’t do it . . . it sort of had us beaten until Shawn stepped in.

“We decided if he could handle that one he could probably do the whole record. Our friend Jake Nelson did a really nice animation for this song; it takes some of the imagery from the artwork and digs a little deeper into that.”

Slowdive announced their new album with the single ‘Kisses’ back in June alongside news of a massive tour of Ireland, the UK and North America.

Dedicated to singer Rachel Goswell’s mother and drummer Simon Scott’s father, who both died in 2020, ‘Everything Is Alive’ will be a record that explores the theme of life and hope.

Neil Halstead shared in a press statement: “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now. The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.”

Check out the full schedule of shows for 2023 and 2024 below. Tickets for UK shows go on sale Wednesday, September 16 at 10 BST and you can purchase them here . Ticket sale details for the European dates are currently TBA. You can also purchase tickets to US shows here .

Slowdive at Webster Hall [photos + review]

slowdive tour support

Last night Slowdive made their long-awaited return to New York City (we last saw them in 2018 ) for the first of two sold out performances at Webster Hall. The performances are a part of the tour in support of their marvelous new album, everything is alive , which is out via Dead Oceans .

slowdive tour support

The performance did feature a handful of cuts from the new album, but the band set out to please the fans, playing five songs from “Souvlaki.” The show got off to a concerning start after a fan passed out two songs in during “prayer remembered.” Thankfully they were ok, and Slowdive then churned in an epic follow-up with the blistering heights of “Star Roving.”

slowdive tour support

It’s a testament to their career and consistent nature that the new songs from their latest two albums blend in seamlessly with songs from two decades ago. A particular highlight was the regular set closing performance of their cover of Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair.” The heights of the blissful guitars were so gloriously overwhelming, that I noticed a fan next to me remove his glasses and wipe away his tears with a smile. What else do I need to say?

Find the rest of the photos from night 1 of their Webster Hall run below, along with the setlist.

Tina Knowles Models 'Vintage' Destiny's Child's Tour Shirt She Swiped from Daughter Beyoncé's Closet

Knowles shared a photo of her posing in some merch from the group’s 2005 Destiny Fulfilled… and Lovin’ It tour

Frank Micelotta/Getty; Tina Knowles/Instagram

Beyoncé ’s fashion archives have got the one thing Tina Knowles wants — Destiny's Child merchandise.

The Grammy winner most likely has tons of bespoke designer pieces in her wardrobe, but her mom only has eyes for her early aughts band tees.

In an Instagram post shared on April 23, Knowles, 70, confessed that she had snagged a “vintage” Destiny’s Child shirt from her daughter’s closet for a day at the Cécred offices.

The T-shirt features a photo of Beyoncé, Michelle Williams  and Kelly Rowland , as well as their signatures. It looks the memorabilia is from the R&B trio’s Destiny Fulfilled… and Lovin’ It world tour, which marked their last before the group disbanded in 2006.

Knowles paired it with a long-sleeve shirt underneath, dark-wash jeans and black boots.

“Stole this vintage T-shirt from @beyonce ,” Knowles wrote in the caption. “I gave it back though!”

Fans had lots of compliments to throw around in the comment section, with one writing, “Keep it Mama, it looks great on you.” Another fan couldn’t wrap their head around shopping in the Beyoncé’s closet. “Imagine stealing from Beyonce and it being allowed,” someone joked.

Tina Knowles/Instagram

With Knowles teasing the “very Cécred day” she had in the same post, it also has us wondering what Beyoncé’s haircare brand is up to.

The company, of which Knowles is vice chairwoman, launched in February , but it has already been a huge hit within the Beyhive (and beyond).

Cécred debuted with the Foundation collection , an assortment of eight products — shampoo, scalp scrub, mask, conditioner, oil and treatments included — that cleanse, condition and strengthen hair of all textures and types.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

When creating her much-awaited haircare line, Beyoncé was inspired by hair rituals from around the world and, of course, her mom, who formerly ran Headliners salon in Houston.

“So much of the fabric of who I am came from her salon,” Beyoncé told Essence . “That’s my foundation—and I think as an artist, so much of my bold experimentation with hair comes from being inspired by art and sculptures; getting creative with braids; figuring out new techniques; and exploring ways to maintain hair growth with protective styles and wigs, while still feeling fabulous. It all stems from my experiences growing up in my mother’s salon.”

Imagine Dragons Plan Summer Tour for New Album, ‘Loom’

By Kory Grow

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Now that Dan Reynolds has shown off his Indiana Jones–like ability to escape boobytrapped ancient ruins — all without the aid of socks — in Imagine Dragons’ “Eyes Closed” video, the group will show that it can tour with its eyes closed as veterans of the road. The Imagine Dragons will kick off an arena tour this summer — tied to the release of their new nine-track album, Loom (out June 28) — and it will run through the fall.

Tickets will go on sale Friday. Various presales begin Tuesday. Full details are on the group’s website . There are also VIP packages including one with “a signed guitar played by a member of Imagine Dragons on stage that night.”

Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Chandelis Duster, Christina Zdanowicz and Lucy Bayly

Follow the latest live coverage about pro-Palestinian protests on US college campuses here.

Rep. Torres: Columbia president “should step aside” if she cannot lead with moral clarity

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat, criticized Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, saying she has “chosen to surrender control of Columbia to an antisemitic fringe." Torres also said canceling in-person classes is “an admission of failure” by Shafik.

“If you cannot ensure the safety of your students, then you have no business serving as President of any university, let alone the alma mater of Alexander Hamilton,” Torres said in a statement. “What Columbia University needs is not an appeaser of antisemitism but a leader who will fight with moral clarity against it.”

He continued, “That Columbia University has failed its Jewish students so profoundly is an indelible stain on the soul of the institution. If the President of Columbia University cannot lead with moral clarity, then she should step aside for a true leader who can and will.”

Hakeem Jeffries: Antisemitic rhetoric "unacceptable and deeply disturbing"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday condemned antisemitism amid ongoing protests at Columbia University and other colleges across the US.

“The antisemitic rhetoric and intimidation deployed by some students and outside protestors on college campuses in New York City and beyond is completely unacceptable and deeply disturbing,” Jeffries, a Democrat who also represents New York, said in a statement. “Every American has the constitutional right to free speech and peaceful assembly in the public square. However, intentionally targeting Jews or any community on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity, acts of harassment and the use of physical violence will never be tolerated.”

He also said the effort to crush antisemitism and hatred “is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It’s an American issue that should bind us all together.”

“We will continue to do everything possible to protect the Jewish community during this very fraught moment, fight the cancer of antisemitism and redouble our efforts to bring communities together,” Jeffries said.

Trump says Columbia University made “grave mistake” making classes hybrid amid tense demonstrations on campus

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Donald Trump speaks to the media in New York City on April 23.

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he thought leadership at Columbia University made a “grave mistake” in making all classes at its main campus hybrid until the spring semester ends after days of tense demonstrations on campus.

“What's going on with the colleges where they're closing Columbia now? I mean, it's just crazy. Columbia should gain a little strength, a little courage and keep their school open. It's crazy. Because that means the other side wins,” Trump told reporters at Trump Tower as he took a few questions after greeting former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso.

Trump said, “The people running Columbia have made a grave mistake.”

Barnard students on suspension "no longer have access" to most campus buildings

From CNN's John Towfighi

Barnard President Laura Rosenbury confirmed in a statement yesterday that students on interim suspension "no longer have access to most Barnard buildings."

She said Dean Leslie Grinage is "helping students find alternative housing arrangements when needed."

The statement also said Barnard will consider lifting suspensions for students who have an otherwise clean record and commit to a probationary period.

A Barnard student alleged on X that she was suspended and evicted from housing.

Correction: This post has been updated to correct President Rosenbury's first name. It is Laura.

House Speaker Johnson to visit Columbia University Wednesday

From CNN's Melanie Zanona

House Speaker Mike Johnson speaks to the press at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on April 20.

House Speaker Mike Johnson will head to Columbia University Wednesday to visit with Jewish students and deliver remarks and hold a press conference “regarding the troubling rise of virulent antisemitism on America’s college campuses,” according to his office.

This comes as pro-Palestinian protests have rocked major American universities, including Columbia. After days of tense demonstrations, Columbia University announced it is  moving to mostly hybrid classes  on its main campus until the end of the semester, April 29.

New York House Republicans have called on Columbia president Minouche Shafik to resign immediately for failing to crack down on the protests.

Students, faculty and staff at University of New Mexico protest in support of Gaza

From CNN's Taylor Romine

Students, faculty and staff at the University of New Mexico started protesting Monday in support of Gaza and have done so peacefully, the university said in a statement Tuesday.

On Tuesday, "members of our UNM community assembled at the UNM Duck Pond in peaceful protest," the statement said. Some people brought tents and sleeping bags, which is in violation of school policy, and campus police told them citations or arrests would occur if not removed, they said.

"Police monitored the situation throughout the evening, without incident, and around midnight advised those who were remaining that their tents needed to be taken down or they would be cited," the statement said. "The tents were eventually taken down, with some people remaining at the duck pond."

As of Tuesday, there are about a dozen people at the duck pond with banners and chairs, but no tents, the statement said, and the university continues to monitor the situation.

"The University is grateful to our entire community for modeling how protests can occur in a way that both upholds freedom of expression and ensures a safe and productive campus environment for everyone," the statement said.

Students at Columbia University encampment say they plan to occupy until demands are met

From CNN's Omar Jimenez and Taylor Romine

Columbia University students participate in an ongoing encampment on their campus in New York City, on April 23.

Students occupying the West Lawn at Columbia University said Tuesday they are planning on staying there until the university meets their demands of divestment.

They are asking for a “complete divestment” from anything related to Israel, financial transparency into the university’s investments and amnesty from any disciplinary measures for students participating in the protests.

“This is what we are here for – calling for an end to genocide and for Columbia to financially divest from the violent Zionist settler entity,” a student who identified themself as W told CNN.

“We are putting our principles into action, and we plan to continue to do so by being here every day until Columbia divests."

The group is in negotiations with the university through a legal negotiator, said student organizer Khymani James, who declined to share details of the negotiations.

When asked about the encampment making Jewish students feel unsafe on campus, W said protesters try their best “to make sure everyone feels safe in the encampment," and their community guidelines “preach and hope for peace continuously.”

Columbia University officials warn ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules

From CNN's Sara Smart

The encampment at Columbia University is seen on Tuesday in New York.

Columbia University officials warned Tuesday that the ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules — but school leaders have not given specifics on disciplinary actions.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority,” university spokesperson Ben Chang said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “That includes the safety of the encampment that continues to grow. We are watching this closely.”

University officials met with student organizers until 2 am ET Tuesday to discuss the situation, Chang said. “Columbia students have the right to protest but they are not allowed to disrupt campus life or harass and intimidate fellow students and members of our community," he added.

Chang said acts of vandalism, reports of harassment and discrimination have all been reported during the ongoing protest.

Officials will not release the specifics of student suspensions as “disciplinary actions continue” on campus.
