Strange Journey: Eridanus Guide

Head to the Lab for Irving to see the Ulna . You can now buy new Sub-Apps; Paracelsus , Surpriser and Enemy Welcome .

Sector Eridanus

Enter Sector Eridanus. Go northwest and face north to search the Gate Type B wall. But nothing seems to be in here. Head east and with the Enemy Search you should be able to find Tyrant King Frost . Defeating him means you can fuse Tyrant King Frost afterward (level 40+ characters only though). He is tough to fight in battle, with Mabufudyne and Mediarahan to heal himself by 333+. Lots of Agi to put him away with group melee attacks. Anyway, head southeast and look for a Thoth .   Agree to his test and he will ask for his own personal book, the Book of Thoth . First hint: A supernatural phenomenon has the first volume. It makes the book look like it’s flying on it’s own. New EX Mission: The wise man’s library .Take the east door only to see that there is a gate that you cannot unlock in the southeast corner.

Go through the north door and northeast for Dis-Stone x4 .  Then, head east until you can go south through a door for AC Eridite x1 . Back to the far west and it will connect to the southern part of 1F that you have already explored, through that Gate Search type B door. Take the Bead x1 here. East a bit and then further north all the way for White Core x4 forma. East through the door and then northeast for Chakra Drop x3 . East more and take the second south route and you will get a message about the radios acting up. Large amounts of energy going on in this area; has the Joint Project already started their destruction? Head west through the regular door to see a demon. The north door is a Terminal and then there is the stairs to Eridanus 2F. If you want to first, you can go to the southeast part of Eridanus 1F to get Recovery Core x5 forma .

Now, to those center stairs to Eridanus 2F. A dark area is ahead, and your Visualizer does not seem to work anymore. No matter, head all the way north and then all the way west for a door. Jimenez calls in to mention traps ahead. Follow the path for stairs going down to the northwest part of Eridanus 1F. The first west path leads to a palace of some sorts, but ignore that and go north more and look east for a route. Take this along with a Gate Search type b door and to the east you should find a Rare Forma, Goetite . Back to the route and straight north for what looks to be an elevator but there is no way to access it at the moment.East of here through a door and then north all the way for a treasure, Amrita Soda x2 . However these light green spots cause your allies to fall asleep, and there is not much else to find in these areas besides more snooze spots and also poison spots if you explore far to the north. There is a path worth taking though. Just south of the Amrita Soda x2 treasures is a route east and slightly southeast, allowing you to head all the way north and west for a scene with Bugaboo .

Bugaboo is crying as a crewman that looks like Jimenez is on the ground. Meanwhile there is an Enemy Search here that is a Fiend Red Rider . The Fiend Red Rider is in the mid 50’s for a level and will trounce you. At the far north to examine Jimenez, who fell asleep on that light green spot. The only way to get him up is to punch and kick at him. He will thank you with Patra Stone x5 . West of here for a Me Patra Stone x3 treasure. Continue to head north and east through a door until you reach a sideways T. South for the Terminal and north for the stairs going up to a new part of Eridanus 2F .

East and south through the door, and then south more. You will find a Strike Team member around here who is a bit confused. Straight west from here and look north – you can scan through the wall with Gate Search type B. Chakra Core x2 forma is here. Look for a south path as you go west, and look towards the east wall as you do. Another Gate Search type b door to unlock, but first continue south and east for Miracle Core x2 . Back to that Gate Search type b door and go through to find a Phase Shifting element within.  There are other Gate Search type b doors around Eridanus 2F but none are too important; take this Phase Shifter to head to an undisclosed part of Eridanus 2F.

South for a Balm of Rising x1 . North and look east for a Gate Search Type b door. Nothing in here though. Further north and east for a door that leads to stairs down to 1F and a Terminal (a shortcut basically). Back in the Phase Shift area and go to the far north from the Phase Shift start, and through the door. West leads to a dead end so go east down the stairs to a new part of Eridanus 1F.

Southwest for Chakra Core x2 forma and Chakra Core x1 forma. Back north and west when you can for a door going south. Many rooms in this area. If you take the first north room you meet a Strike Team member who wants to go see his daughter. West of this room is a demon who laughs about the prospect of this human seeing his daughter. Northwest has a room full of sleep spots and southwest room is empty, so take the southeastern room. The south room has sleep spots but if you take that Gate Search Type b door you can avoid many of them. Take the east spot to see a crewman down; he hands you Dis-Poison x5 for rescuing him. Now you can go south all the way for a Soma x1 or you can go around to the west and get it and avoid more of the sleep spots. In the southwest part of this room is a Gate Search Type B door. Head south but look for Agilao Stone x3 . South more for a Gate Search Type B door that connects you to the beginning part of Eridanus 1F. It would be a good time to return to rest up and drop off that Rare Forma.

Back at the Red Sprite, head to Irving. He takes a look at the Goetite rare forma . The forma search function of your Demonica’s Main App has been enhanced. Forma Search B is now usable. This basically means higher-quality Forma can be found on the field so as always keep your eyes peeled. So let’s return back into Eridanus to scan the area once more.

You will find all sorts of nice Forma now. More importantly, make your way to the stairs and the phase shift area of 2F. There is a rare forma here, the Asteria Stone . Find some more forma (lots of AT Eridite) and head back to the Lab. You should be able to get things like the Tsukikage Vest, Pinlight Gun, Snake Knife, etc .

Enter Eridanus and take the stairs up just west of your starting position. Head to the west end and you will teleport into the palace of Eridanus 2F. South for a heal spot, north for the Terminal. East leads to nothing except another grey pit that sends you back from where you came. West has a Gate that you cannot open in the northwest corner, but little else, so hit the Terminal or the grey spot in the northeast.

Anyway, now that you have the Asteria Stone, head to the center part of Eridanus 1F for the Terminal and the stairs going up. Then north and west through the dark area to a staircase leading back to 1F, and then the strange red device is just north of you. It is in fact a device for teleporting. It takes you into a new area of Eridanus 1F, within the Palace. By the way, if you take those other two west paths going into the Palace, you can get Miracle Core forma (north route west) and the southern route leads you to a demon mentioning Lady Amaterasu . This is Ame no Uzume attendant to Lady Amaterasu .  Agree to help. Then Ame mentions a guy named Futotama . New EX Mission; Marebito, the foreign god .

If you take the north route and go west, you see another teleporter. But a Ghoul comes out as you try to enter. Even if you try to force your way, the demon will block you. South of here for AT Eridite x1 and a staircase to Eridanus 2F. North for a Gate Search type B that allows you to connect with the heal spot and Terminal. Head south for the stairs to 3F.

Another heal spot on the floor here. Go south and you will have many areas to explore. West for a Calm Core x4 forma and a Gate Search type B door to the west. Enter this area and go north for another Gate Search but it ends in an error. Go to the center of this area for a demon, Zouchouten . Zouchouten is one of the pillars of the Four Devas . Agree to train with him and you will unlock EX Mission: The ever-steeper trial I . Equip the Frost Cannon before you try this, and anyone that can use Bufu. Protection against something like Agidyne would be nice. You cannot heal or even have a member in your party that has a healing spell. This may eliminate some of your go-to characters. Nonetheless, Frigid Shot does massive damage for you and if you have Black Frost with casting Bufudyne, you should be fine. Kishin Zouchouten can now be created through fusion! EX Mission The ever-steeper trial I is now complete and you receive Abacus x1 for your efforts.

Now to the east end of Eridanus 3F for a Divine Chain x1 forma. Another Gate Search type b door to go through. And another gate search door to the north in the room that cannot be opened. Meanwhile, Kazfiel is in the middle of the room. New EX Mission: Before the holy battle I .

We must win this battle with a group of demons that has a total magic power below 60. With the levels you are at this probably means one good spell-caster at best, if you are planning on having a three-demon party at least. If you only use two-demons you could possibly fit in two spell-casters. However you may be better off with three physically strong demons for a more powerful group melee attack. Use those who have high level Zio spells. Remember, the Frost Cannon also has Bolt Spray , a powerful bolt attack though it takes 36 MP. Herald Kazfiel will spend time buffing her defense and with regular attacks, but beware once she starts to use spells like Garudyne . What’s worse, when Kazfiel is near death she will use a Charge + Deathbound combo that will nail all allies for massive damage. You will definitely want to guard after she uses Charge. And she has a ton of HP. EX Mission: Before the holy battle I is complete, and your reward is Paper Sheet x1 .

You can come back later with a better Gate Search function to be tested more. They are tough, competitive battles and is good experience with your main character. It allowed me to reach level 42 so I could fuse Asura . To fuse Asura you just need Fallen Orias, Jirae Knocker, and Spirit Pisaca . And of course be level 42.

When you are ready to continue the main story route, take the south elevator to the “TOP”. At the north end of the TOP of Eridanus we see a tough demon. When you regain control, go west and search the the Gate Search type b door. Follow the path to an AT Eridite II x1 forma. Also a heal spot and a Terminal in this area. Go to the east end of this area. Another Gate Search but you cannot process this one. Look for a demon by this gate door that mentions the Snake Ouroboros and saying that no humans can defeat that demon. North through the door now.

North all the way for a Gate Search door you cannot open and a strange sequence. Arthur chimes in to order everyone back to the Red Sprite to leave the sector, as we have no means of going through the door. The others don’t like this order. Anyway, explore this area before heading back. To the northeast is a Miracle Core x2 forma, DF Eridite II x2 at the far north, and another Miracle Core x1 at the west end circling around. A little bit south of that for AT Eridite II x2 .

Return to the Red Sprite now. Since we can’t do anything else in Eridanus, the mission is suspended. A strange signal has been picked up in Carina Sector Code C . Time to head there.

Carina Sector

The plane shift to Carina begins. Seems to be a strange ship there; signals aren’t going through but could it be the Gigantic ? Or some random ship in the Schwarzwelt? The location seems to be 4th floor at 9 o clock. New Main Mission: Signal Investigation . At the Lab, that Paper Sheet x1 and Abacus x1 from those previous ‘test’ battles will net you numerous sub-apps (all of which relate to leveling up demons).

While you are on 1F, check that room Mastema took residence in. Now you see a Dwarf . Take on his quest. He needs Cursed Lance x1 and AT Carite II x2 . New EX Mission: Forge! Forge!! Forge!!! I .

Take the northeast elevator from here, to floor 4. Head south along that western path and look west for a door (you may already have this gate search on your map if you saw it earlier). Scan through that Gate Search type B door. South and scan through that Gate Search type B door too. VI Incense x1 at the very bottom. Check the west door to see a Goblin . A lady demon then talks to the Goblin. The lady is mother to the famous hound of Culann, Cu Chulainn . She came to see Master Cu Chulainn. New EX Mission; A formal search request .

Now go north and west through a Gate Search Type B door. A giant ship is ahead of you in this room. It is not the Gigantic but instead of a prototype model of the Red Sprite . It is called the Lightning . They seem to know about our operation but is it safe to go in? Main and Jimenez go inside. This is a small band known as Jack’s Squad , and you are talking to Captain Jack . Interesting guy. His group has been dispatched for one purpose; money. Top choice he gives you is neutral, middle is chaos and bottom is law. Captain Jack then asks Ryan about a Forma he is looking for. Hydro Apple x1, Ice-10 x1 and X Metal x1 . We have none of these but evidently they are in Eridanus Sector. Jack also mentions a teleporter that had a Ghoul blocking it; we’ve seen that before. We can go through it now.  Main Mission: Signal Investigation is now complete. Now a new Main Mission: Jack’s Bargain . Time to return to Eridanus (but search the north area for Fallen Feather x1 and Muscle Drink x3 .

Take the stairs going up just west of you. Then go in that black pit, then south down the stairs when you get to the Palace area. You are in Eridanus 1F and just north is that teleport device that the demon was blocking earlier. Take the path this time to end up in a new area of Eridanus 1F (west end).

Straight to the south for a Gate Search Type B door that connects this route to the one just south of it. West of here is a dead end with a dead crewman, so head north and west instead through a door. Several black pits in this area. Take the south one and you end up feet from where you were. Take the north one and you end up in a new area. Chakra Pot x1 in front of you. Two pits in this room; east takes you back to the start, and the south one takes you to a third area like this.

This third area has three different black pits that send you elsewhere. The right one sends you to the southwest where there is a Chakra Core x3 forma . A Strike Team member is in the center, confused. Take the right path again to get to a Terminal. South and west, up the stairs to 2F. Go through the poison for an Anubis Stone x1 . Into the black pit to return to the previous room.  This time, take the left pit and grab the Caladbolg x1 . South for a pit that sends you to a Hydro Apple x1 . That’s one of the things we needed for Captain Jack . Three more different areas to go through here. West takes you to an AC Eridite x1 and then back to the Terminal area you were just at. North takes you southwest, and to a Luck Core x1 forma . Dropping down the pit south of it sends you to that Terminal area you were at before, so drop down just north of where that Luck Core forma was. Drop in the south-most pit. This puts you right by the Ice-10 rare forma (the 2nd of 3 that Jack requested). Look for a south gate as you go east here. Yea, only three more routes down here.

Take the first south you see, and hang to the southeast. You will find a door to scan through, and go further south for Recovery Core x3 . Check the north paths too though, one leads to a staircase up to 2F Eridanus. There is a pit to the southwest in this room; ignore it and go north, along the east wall. You will soon find a Terminal. Just southwest of this for a Garula Stone x3 . Go to the far west and then southwest for a pit all by itself; and it sends you to a place all by itself on 1F. East leads to a one-way door back to where you were, while south has a Terminal and a staircase up to 2F.

Up those stairs and south for Miracle Core x1 forma . Take the Lu Incense x1 ahead, and continue to follow this route. You will go north a bit to a dead end and fall through. What is here? X Metal , the last of the three Rare Forma we need. Now we can go, though you are certainly welcome to go explore the rest of this area. You can go south and southeast to open up two Gate Search type B doors that allow for easier moving about. Last but not least we can open up a Gate Search type B door to the northwest that leads to the teleportation devices, which is where we started (if you are hankering to go through the rest of the routes for Forma). Personally I’m sick of it but the boss ahead is probably the toughest yet.

Return to Sector Carina when you are ready, and then to Jack’s Ship , the Lightning . You will then hand over the Hydro Apple, Ice-10 and the X Metal . You then open a link to Jack’s Demonica and upload the Forma Search B program for them. Main Mission: Jack’s Bargain is now complete. Return to the Red Sprite and prepare for another plane shift, back to Eridanus Sector .

Take the stairs up and then the black pit. South in this area and up the stairs to Eridanus 3F. South all the way in 3F for the elevator, which you take to the TOP. Just to the north, a strange signal comes in saying that ‘Mother’ has awakened. Who was that, a demon or someone with Jack? Probably not the latter as when we go north we see Ryan , who is a member of Captain Jack’s Squad . He hands you something very valuable, Gate Search C .

The door north of you opens with Gate Search C . But let’s not go in it. This boss battle is one you are not ready for. Head south and take the east route through the Gate Search type C door. This leads you down a narrow path that has a door and another Gate Search Type C door to the north. Enter the regular door to the west and grab the Bead Chain x1 and the Recovery Core x5 forma . North all the way for another Gate Search type C door. Hang a quick left through the door to get the AT Eridite II x3 forma .Further north along the narrow path for Spirit Acid x1 and then you will wrap around west.

Notice you already have that area to the south explored. This was from the Dis quest earlier (if you did that, that is ( Yggdrasil) . Sure enough, check the center of the room to see Yggdrasil hanging around quietly. Turns out with Yggdrasil recovered, the three Dis’ turned into Norn Goddess of Time . Agree to go back in time. New EX Mission: Fateful Aid . This is a tough battle at this point. With Main at 43 and most of the demons in the high 30’s low 40’s, this battle was very hard. You need to load up on fire users and hope for same-alignment group attacks. Only 1800 HP but it takes a while to get down at low levels. Arrow Rain is a devastating attack to absorb, upwards of 200 damage to each character if they are weak against projectiles. Tree Yggdrasil also has Hell Thrust that can do to one ally. You will gain a bit of EXP for this and you can now fuse Tree Yggdrasil . Yggdrasil is now tame. You go back to Norn in the present time with EX Mission: Fateful Aid complete. Nornir Ring x1 is your reward and we can also fuse Megami Norn . The Nornir Ring is a useful all-around ring, giving each stat a marginal boost.

Back to the main narrow route going west. Look for a Luck Core x1 forma and west through another Gate Search type C door. South quick for a door with Luck Core x1 within. Back to the narrow west path for Chakra Core x1 and soon you will be traveling south. Look south for a Gate Search Type C door but again, take the east door for a Miracle Core x2 forma before continuing south. The room to the south has nothing but go south out of that door and quickly east for Sword Shard x1 and also Dantalian . She wonders if you can map every inch of this land. Well actually just every inch of three different maps. New EX Mission: Tales of investigation . Dantalian would like to start off by exploring every inch of land on the first floor of Sector Bootes . Follow the path all the way south and east back to the Heal Spot and Terminal.

Now that you have the Gate Search Type C, you can take the south door just east of the Eridanus 1F entrance. This nets you Dis-Para x4 . You can also head to the third floor of Eridanus to use the Gate Search Type C to unlock more boss battles. Aniel is on the right side as you go north, for EX Mission: Before the holy battle II . You must win within 7 turns so bring allies that are of like-alignment and can use Garu, for melee attacks. This battle is not very hard though Ziodyne can be a problem. But Herald Aniel can cast Diarama towards the end to create a problem (remember, you have to win within 7 turns). EX Mission: Before the holy battle II is now complete. Plasma Sword x1 is our reward.

On the west end we have Koumokuten one of the pillars of the Four Devas. This battle gimmick involves having a very limited amount of spirit. Limited as in 1 MP. New EX Mission: The ever-steeper trial II has commenced. It may sound difficult but Kishin Koumokuten is not too troublesome. He has tough physical attacks including True Lobotomy , but you can heal if need be. Plus, this is a battle that characters like Horkos (and more random demons like Fairy Spriggan ) will excel at. After the battle you can fuse Kishin Koumokuten . With EX Mission: The ever-steeper trial II complete, we get Vajra x1 . The Vajra is for Chaos users only. 1-2 strikes at 54 attack power (similar to the 1-2 attack Snake Knife but the Snake Knife has just a 42 attack power).

Once you are level 44 or higher, you can start to think about the boss ahead, Ourobos . Find a bunch of Agi users. Other things to think about; Hama protection, Zio protection and you need many allies with the same alignment (all four being the same alignment would be best). The reason is because Ourobos heals 160 HP each turn, so you’re going to want to take off 250-300 just to feel like you’re getting some progress. Otherwise you’ll run out of HP or get unlucky with his Mahama. Give the Main the Thiomoto Vest as it is strong against Wind and (more importantly) Electric. You will also want to dust off your Randall gun, if you still have it. We need that Flame Shot ability .

Go to the TOP floor of Eridanus again. Snake Ouroboros Maia awaits within that door. One good thing about this battle is that Snake Ouroboros has such a poor defense, if you have an Agidyne user like Kingu you can take off the 160+ damage in one turn with one character. Try to heal gradually and use one of your less potent allies to do so. Main’s Flame Shot is powerful so it will be a detriment to our attack when he has to heal though it is inevitable. Hope that Mahama goes your way and if you have reasonable protection for Wild Lightning , you should be okay.

After the battle, an old friend comes by. Seems to be Commander Gore who praises Ouroboros Maia once more. His prophecy comes true as Snake Ouroboros is back, in an even more grand form. Time to retreat.

Captain Jack calls in to sympathize. Turns out there are areas of energy around this TOP floor of Eridanus. You may or may not have already explored around here but it is not difficult to traverse. Head to the west end first by the terminal and rest area, and you will see a Basilisk . You will fight three of these Drake Basilisks and they are a bit harder than your average ones. After you defeat them, the presence goes away in this area.

North now and in the north-center you will see the frog Dzelarhons . Use lots of Bufu here for an easy win. The east end has the skull Kwancha . There are two of them. Last but not least are the Mandrakes south of here. That should do it, so rest up near the Terminal and Save. Then return to the point where Ouroboros was.

Others have said that the first version of Ouroboros is tough. For me, it was the second version. The first version of Ouroboros is less potent than this one; granted there is no regeneration of 161 HP for the second Ouroboros, but his attacks are much more troublesome. Again you want to gather allies that are strong against Hama, Wild Lightning (Zio) and physical attacks. Wave of Death is the new physical attack and it will slaughter you to the tune of 200+ damage unless you are strong against physical attacks. It goes without saying it’s hard to find allied demons with all of those protections and that can use Agi and also be the same alignment. For me my victory started with getting Koumokuten , who requires level 47 or so to fuse. But I was pleased to get him as he was Chaos, has lightning strength, strong against physical attacks and strong against Hama (oh, and he could use Maragi). This left me with only Kingu to heal (who has no protection but is kept along for his Agidyne). Also I was fortunate enough to see Ouroboros start off with Mahama twice and hit nobody. So the two free wins were enough to propel our group over the snake.

Victory nets you the right to fuse Snake Ouroboros . Ouroboros leaves behind a Klein Bottle and Formless Mass . After this you see Gore lamenting the loss of Ouroboros. Main Mission: Find the Vanishing Point is now complete.

Back at the ship, it’s time to get ready for the Vanishing Point . Jimenez mentions the Formless Mass, our last souvenir. The Red Sprite then heads through the Vanishing Point. However, something attacks the Red Sprite from behind. Some scenes with the Main, Zelenin and Jimenez.

This Sector was fun except having to scavenge for Forma for Jack’s Crew.

This guide is more confusing than the sector itself

:) Thanks. It’s not easy doing a walkthrough for a game like this where stepping on every spot can be important. And you have to be following the thing the whole time for it to make sense..

What / where are you stuck on?

This place is very confusing. I can’t find the stone that opens the next section of the sector. Can you help?

“Her” “She” Uh… Do we tell him?

Thanks, I was able to find the X Metal thanks to you!

Happy to hear this guide is still helping folks out!

Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux

Image of CJ Andriessen

Strange things are happening to me

Eight years ago, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey  was my first experience with anything SMT  related. I was hesitant at first, not being a fan of first-person dungeon crawlers at the time. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up my copy at GameStop and booted it up on my Nintendo DSi XL. While it would be many more years before the genre would click for me, I came away from the game with a great appreciation for the world Atlus has constructed and its devil-may-care attitude about appropriating various religious deities.

It was the opposite of the happy-go-lucky games I normally play, and even today, Strange Journey  remains an oddity in my DS game collection. Strange Journey Redux  isn’t as much of an outsider on my 3DS having bought every other Shin Megami Tensei  game to hit the handheld, but it is still one deep, dark, and devilish ride.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux review

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux (3DS) Developer: Atlus Publisher: Atlus Released: May 15, 2018 (North America), May 18, 2018 (Europe) MSRP: $39.99

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux  takes me and my merry band of mercenaries to Antarctica, where a massive cornucopia of realities known as the Schwarzwelt is slowly expanding. My mission is to study the phenomenon and stop it before it spreads across the planet. Once inside, I’m quickly assimilated to new technology that will allow me to traverse the twisted paths of the sectors I’ll explore and stay alive in turn-based battles with the help of demons I meet along the way.

To the outsider, one who’s never picked up an SMT  game before, it can look like Pokémon  for adults. In reality, Strange Journey Redux  takes a more nihilistic approach to the monster-catching genre. There are 350 demons for me to confront, converse with, and eventually add to my team, but I can only carry up to 18 of them at a time. These aren’t buddies I’m supposed to grow fond of, but rather blocks to be taken apart and rebuilt as I see fit. They’re nothing more than their abilities to me, tools for my success. There’s something grim about having a demon beg to join my crew, only for me to immediately turn and fuse that new creature with another from my stock because they have Luster Candy which is a frickin’ useful skill.

The meat and potatoes of Strange Journey Redux  is the same as it was eight years ago. I still travel from sector to sector, first-person dungeon crawler style, trying to find a way out of the Schwarzwelt while the forces of heaven and hell try to corrupt me. Its hard sci-fi cum theology lesson of a story meshes well with the backdrop of the various sectors, from the demon bordello of Sector Bootes to the They Live  inspired aisles of Sector Carina. Strange Journey  doesn’t pull any punches with its story, and the Earth it presents — one corrupt with greed, pollution, and sin — is perhaps more relevant now than when it first launched. It may lack the more immersive story-telling techniques of the Triple-A games market, but Strange Journey ‘s text-heavy narrative is a gripping piece of fiction that feeds players a bitter truth of mankind’s self-destructive reality.

This enhanced 3DS port features a lot of quality-of-life improvements, such as Japanese voice acting, better visuals, three different difficulty levels, 20 save slots and the ability to save in the field. It’s still missing features like automatic scrolling text or the ability to make notes and marks on the map like I can with the Etrian Odyssey  series this game is so clearly inspired by. I can do without either of those because it will now let me pick and choose which skills my demons inherit during fusions. There’s also new music, new demons, a new animation you shouldn’t watch because it spoils the story, and new artwork courtesy of the most substantial addition to the game, the Womb of Grief.

The Womb is a seven-floor mega-dungeon I need to complete to unlock one of the three new endings to the game. Central to the dungeon are Demeter, the goddess of the Harvest who tasks me with finding six pieces of fruit, and Alex, the new mysterious character who is trying to kill me. If you think Alex and the Womb are effortlessly woven into the existing narrative, think again. The dungeon and her storyline feel very much like a gaiden to the existing adventure. Much like the additions made to the enhanced port of Radiant Historia , these new story elements do not coalesce. I can count on one hand how many times she appears in the original plotline, and her banishment to the Womb highlights some annoying game design choices.

Alex has a sparse storyline and most of my interactions with her quickly devolve into fighting. At first, she overpowers me, forcing me to flee from every fight. As I traverse the late-November-corn-maze that is the Womb of Grief, I come across her multiple times. At first, when I’m weak, she acts as an artificial barrier to keep me from advancing too far. On the third floor of the dungeon, she blocks my only two pathways. So I leave, and 10 hours later I come back with my character leveled far above where I need him to be to fight back. What I think is going to be one or two fights actually ends up being more than a dozen.

On this single floor of the Womb, I fight Alex multiple times and not once does she grant me any experience points when I defeat her. I just keep fighting her to advance and get absolutely nothing out of it. If I get hurt too much and need to heal, and I leave the dungeon, I have to repeat all of those battles. I don’t know who designed this portion of the game — something tells me the same person who thought up the bullshit that is Jack’s Bargain — but it absolutely soils a dungeon that actually isn’t all that good to begin with.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux review

Of the seven floors of the Womb, only the final one makes good use of all the dungeon elements established in the regular campaign while adding nifty tricks of its own. The rest of the floors feature some interesting ideas that are bogged down by repetitive fights and puzzles that can be easy to mess up, leading to more arduous fights with the same several demons.

I’m not sold on this new addition for most of the game, and even when I finish the final floor of it, I’m indifferent. But a few hours after that, when I see the fruits of my labor blossom, I become greatly appreciative of all the hours I spent traversing the Womb. The original Strange Journey  had one of the best final boss battles I’ve played in a JRPG. The final boss for the new endings — of which I unlock the “new law ending” — is just as satisfying. Also hard. Very, very hard.

With the various quality of life improvements, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux  is simply a more playable version of an already great game. I really enjoyed it the first time around eight years ago, and replaying it today reminds of why it was the ideal game to introduce me to the Shin Megami Tensei  franchise.

This sector was created by Jack's Squad as a formal base within the Schwarzwelt where they installed themselves as official rulers. Thanks to the special technologies included in the Lightning , their ship, they bent time and space itself to create their new base. While mostly comprised of caverns and icy terrain, they were perfectly installed there and added their labs and containment devices to the original soil.

Soon after the establishment of the base, the protagonist , his friend Jimenez , and Jimenez's companion Bugaboo , visited the sector in order to ascertain whether the non-aggression agreement between the two crews remained in effect. While they were reassured it was, Jimenez left with a bad impression about Ryan , the squad's second-in-command, and believed there was foul play in the sector. He was left at his behest as a spy.

Soon after his departure from the crew, Jimenez discovered Bugaboo missing. Investigating, he realized the small demon had entered the squad's labs. Following him inside, he found horrific evidence of monstruous experiments in which living demons were used as spare parts and pieces for weaponry. He tried to disrupt the experiments as much as he could, but he only managed to do superficial damage before he was captured and sent to be used as experimentation fodder.

Soon after this, the Red Sprite's crew invaded the sector en masse, destroying most of the squad's experiments and crippling their operations. Soon after, the protagonist disarmed Captain Jack and Jimenez killed him as payback for his treatment of demons. Ryan, desperate, handed over everything the squad had and hoped to be left alive. Soon after, the Red Sprite' s crew dismantled most of the weaponry of the squad and left a cadre of overseers.

After they arrived at Sector Grus , however, Ryan led a revolt, which led only to Zelenin deciding humans could not be trusted and to her conversion to an angel, leading to the complete brainwashing of the camp. Their demons were left free and they were left as nearly mindless shells of themselves. Later on, an alignment-affecting choice by the protagonist can end with them dead at his hands or with them being left as the hollow people they had become.

Omsk is one of the largest cities in Russia, located at the confluence of the Irtysh and Omi rivers, a large scientific, cultural, sports and industrial center. It is also known as the City of Labor Glory. Omsk is the million-plus city with 1,164,815 people according to the 2019 census. The data makes it the second most populous in Siberia and the eighth in Russia. It was founded in 1716 and officially received the status of a city in 1782 and the capital of the Russian state (1918-1920) and the administrative center of the Omsk region since 1934. The long history of the city dubs it as one of the witnesses of Russia’s journey in the past.

Omsk in a Nutshell

The location of Omsk has been of great importance since ancient times. It housed the settlements and cemeteries of few developed nations, who lived from the 6th millennium BC according to the 13th century archive. In the 17th century, the need for a Russian city at the mouth of Omi was so great that the Tsar was repeatedly asked for its foundation. Omsk was founded by I. D. Buchholz in 1716 as a fortress protecting the southern borders of the state. The city received its main development in the 20th century: it was the capital of the State of the Russian (White Russia) in 1918 to 1920, and expanded significantly during the Great Patriotic War. Many factories from the European part of Russia were moved to the city, and before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city was known as “Garden City”, “City of Youth”, and “City of Science”.

The History of Omsk

The city of Omsk was founded in 1716. The history of Omsk began since almost 300 years ago. By order of Peter I, Lt. Col. Buchholz with a detachment of soldiers and Cossacks landed at the mouth of Omi and founded a fortress there, which became known as Omsk. This fortress was built to protect Siberia from nomads .

Omsk has officially existed for more than 50 years. In 1768-1771, at the initiative of the commander of the Siberian Corps, General I. I. Springer, a new fortress was built on the right bank of the Omi with more advanced protective engineering structures. In August 1782, the Omsk fortress became one of the ten district settlements of the Tobolsk governorate, and in October of the same year it was given the status of a city.

An important event in the history of Omsk was the creation, in 1822, of two independent governor-generals on the territory of Siberia : the West Siberian and East Siberian. It was Omsk that was elected the permanent residence of the Governor General. At the same time, the Governor General made a petition to the government to transfer the Main Directorate of Western Siberia from Tobolsk to Omsk, as a result of which Omsk became practically the main city of Western Siberia with the subordination of the Tobolsk, Tomsk provinces and Semipalatinsk region.

The construction of the Trans-Siberian railway served as a powerful impetus for the development of the region, due to which Omsk became a major transport center having a favorable geographical position at the crossroads of the Irtysh River and the continental railway . In March 1896, a bridge was built across the Irtysh and train traffic began from Chelyabinsk to Novonikolaevsk (Novosibirsk). At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Omsk noticeably changes its former appearance, turning into one of the industrial and socio-cultural centers of Western Siberia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, new multi-story buildings of classical architectural forms started to appear in Omsk. This, for example, is the building of the Treasury Chamber and the Provincial Treasury, erected by the project of architect N.E. Varaksin in 1900. In 1903 Moscow shopping arcades were built on Chernavinsky (Lubinsky) Avenue as a project of architect O.V. Dessin. In 1905, the construction of a drama theater was completed on the same street by the architect I. Khvorinov. Across the theater in 1914, according to the project of architect A. Kryachkov, the building of the city commercial was built. A court house, the Railway Administration and other buildings were then continued to be built, giving Omsk a unique look.

After October 1917, the city became the political center for the establishment of Soviet power in Western Siberia. In the period from June 1918 to November 1919, the city of Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, and Admiral A.V. Kolchak declared Omsk as the capital of Siberia. In 1934, the Omsk province was formed, and the city of Omsk became its center.

Omsk is considered as the third capital of Russia. The origins of this idea lie in the importance of Omsk as the administrative center of the Steppe Territory, connecting the North Siberian and the West Russian with the steppe south and east from the 18th century. It was a border town, an important transportation hub. Nevertheless, the idea that Omsk is worthy to be a special city is spreading more and more in modern times, especially among young people. Various epithets of a similar kind arise; for example, the organizer of Battle Social Dance, Marina Kopylova, called it “the third dance capital”, and because of the abundance of theaters , Omsk is described as the “theater capital of Siberia”. There is also an Omsk socio-political weekly “The Third Capital”. Despite this, the patent for the use of the Third Capital trademarks and analogues in 2009 was issued by Rospatent to another city – Kazan. However, the long and rich history of the city will always become one of the witnesses to Russia’s journey in the past.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Shoot for the Moon

Worldwide Planetarium Database

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Shop on Lenin Street

yykkaa/Getty Images

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Sample Siberian Cuisine

Quynh Anh Nguyen/Getty Images

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

Simon Richmond/Getty Images

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Vladislav Domnich/Getty Images

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

 lvinst/Getty Images

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.
