Snack maker closing plant in Charlotte, to lay off 125 workers

by Chris Roush, Business North Carolina — July 3, 2023 .

CHARLOTTE – Snack maker Snyder’s-Lance plans to lay off as many as 125 workers in Charlotte as it closes one of the three plants on its manufacturing campus.

The subsidiary of Campbell Soup told the North Carolina Department of Commerce that the plant would close no later than Sept 27, and that it expects employs to begin leaving around Aug. 25. Its other two plants, which make salty and bakery items, on the campus are not affected.

However, hourly workers can apply for jobs at the other two plants, so the exact number of workers losing their jobs may be less.

In January, Campbell Soup announced that it would close its snacks offices in Charlotte and Norwalk, Connecticut, and combine them at its headquarters in Camden, New Jersey.

The company said at the time that Charlotte would remain a key manufacturing and distribution center, with approximately 1,400 employees in the Pineville area. Combined with the company’s Maxton manufacturing site, Campbell employs approximately 2,500 people in the state.

Campbell acquired Snyder’s-Lance five years ago in a $5 billion deal. Snyder’s-Lance products include Cape Code and Kettle potato chips, Milano cookies and Goldfish crackers.

Snyder’s-Lance closing Charlotte manufacturing plant, laying off workers

C HARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A Charlotte snack company is laying off workers and closing one of its manufacturing plants in south Charlotte.

Snyder’s-Lance manufactures snack foods like pretzels, potato chips, and crackers. Their products are sold at grocery and convenience stores across the U.S.

This summer, according to a warn filed with the state, the company will be laying off 125 workers at the ‘Emerald Nut’ manufacturing plant on Crump Road.

Snyder’s-Lance was purchased by the Campbell Soup Company back in 2018. Queen City News did reach out to the parent company regarding the layoffs and plant closure.

A company spokesperson said the Charlotte site, as a whole is not closing, just the Emerald Building. As for employees, Queen City News was told they are being offered the opportunity to be considered for vacant roles at other locations. That progress began last week.

So far, the spokesperson said they have been able to place 64 employees in new roles.

CHARLOTTE — Five years after snapping up Charlotte-based snack maker Snyder’s-Lance Inc., food industry giant Campbell Soup Co. is closing its office here amid a consolidation effort.

The company announced Wednesday morning that  it will shutter the local office as well as one in Norwalk, Connecticut . It will consolidate those operations at its headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, where it plans to invest $50 million.

The office at 13515 Ballantyne Corporate Place employs about 212 people, a Campbell Soup spokesperson tells CBJ. While a small number of facility-related roles will be eliminated, the majority of the jobs at the Charlotte and Norwalk offices will be relocated.
