The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town

Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

The best safaris near Cape Town

Aquila Game Reserve

1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

3.  Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.

Goudkop Bush Camp

4.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

Grootbos Nature Reserve

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

Hermanus

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

We are a couple 60+. We took the 10 day package that included 6 days Cape to Addo Adventure and a few days in and around Capetown. The whole tour was great, the best part was our guide and driver Lourens. He is a great guy, very funny, great humor. A lot of knowledge and very experienced. He is also a very good driver and very safe. During the tour we stayed in Cape Xtreme accommodations in Sedgefield and met Liezel, a very nice lady that took great care of us. Over whole it was a very good tour and everything that was promised was delivered. Being an elderly couple, we have one warning, we paid quite a lot to get a private room with a bathroom inside. After staying in the different places, we think that it is highly overcharged and one should consider whether it is justified. Apart from that we highly recommend the company, the tour and the guide.

Isac, the driver /guide was really excellent and went out of his way to make things pleasurable for us. We thourally enjoyed all the possible options. One small remark is that on the last day, arriving back in Cape Town, there was no final group goodbye, people being dropped off at their various addresses as we entered the city.

I really liked the choice of accommodation. Even though it was hostel-style it was always very clean and cosy with great hosts and once also right by the beach. My favourite activities were walking with Elephants and thr Bungee Jump - it was so much fun! Having been on Safaris before the Safari was a bit of a lowlight. Small park with not much to see. Our guide Silvester was friendly and I would recommend this tour!

What people love about South Africa Tours from Cape Town

An excellent tour which we couldn’t fault. Our guide, Rochelle, was superb. She was knowledgeable, always helpful and cheerful. We did everything we wanted to do and more. Highly recommended.
We cannot speak more highly about Cape Xtreme!! we had a wonderful time on our 11 day tour of Cape Town and Safari. Tariq was our very experienced guide in Cape Town, and he did an excellent job, give this man a raise! He was always punctual, knowledgeable and fun! He definitely was a highlight of our trip to SA. The tour itself is action packed, with early mornings and non stop activities, but this definitely a good thing when travellers want to see as much as they can in a short period of time. We would 100% book again with Cape Xtreme and would recommend to any of our friends back home.
The tour showed me the maximum of places in the given time period, we could hug a giraffe and elephants, learned a lot abt them and I was able to jump into a waterfall at my birthday....

Trying to decide between all the different Cape Town safari tours? Wondering which is suitable for your entire family?

No worries – I’ve got you!

As a South African, I’ve been going on safaris since before I can remember. Back then, the whole family would pile into our 4×4 car at the break of dawn with a selection of “padkos” (road trip food) and spend hours at a time driving the dusty dirt roads in search of the elusive Big 5.

As an adult and a travel writer, I traded in the self-drive option from my childhood in exchange for exciting guided game drives in proper open vehicles.

And these exciting experiences are what I’ll be sharing with you in this guide to the best Cape Town safari tours!

These types of guided game drives are also a great family-friendly activity. However, some are only suitable for older children and I’ll make sure to share the age ranges for each of the Cape Town safari tours I share in this blog post. My son has been going on safari with us since he was 2.5 months old so some tour options are definitely more inclusive than others depending on their facilities.

Although the Kruger National Park is usually the go-to destination for safaris, there are still plenty of options to spot wildlife in the region around Cape Town.

Whether you’re seeking a luxury getaway or an affordable yet equally thrilling tour, Cape Town offers something for everyone. In this article, I’ll be exploring six of the best Cape Town safari tours for families that promise to dazzle and delight.

Combined Cape Town and Kruger Safaris

Kruger National Park and Cape Town vie with each other for the title of South Africa's most popular tourist attraction. In most other respects, however, these two iconic landmarks could scarcely be more different. Kruger is South Africa’s ultimate safari destination, a 19,485km²/7,523mi² tract of savannah that provides sanctuary to lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and much else besides. Cape Town, by contrast, is a lively and cosmopolitan city blessed with an unforgettable setting below Table Mountain and a fine array of beaches, wineries, restaurants, museums, walking trails and other amenities. No trip to South Africa would be complete without a visit to these two world-class – and perfectly complementary – destinations.

6 Questions About Combined Cape Town and Kruger Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

south africa safari tours cape town

What is the ideal holiday length for a Cape Town and Kruger safari?

“Ideally you should allow at least 1 week for a combined Cape Town and Kruger holiday, with 3 nights in each destination. That said, Cape Town is such a diverse and enjoyable destination you could easily spend a full week exploring the city and its surrounds. Likewise, many wildlife enthusiasts would happily spend a week or longer in Kruger without venturing anywhere else. So, while a week is the realistic minimum for combined Cape Town and Kruger packages, it would certainly be possible to dedicate more time if you can afford it. Less than 1 week would make for a slightly rushed trip, but a 5-day itinerary with 2 nights in each of Cape Town and Kruger would be a workable minimum. In this case, budget permitting, instead of visiting Kruger itself, you might consider visiting a neighboring private reserve (such as Sabi Sand Game Reserve) for a more concentrated wildlife-viewing experience.”

What activities are recommended on a Kruger and Cape Town trip?

“As is the case in most safari destinations, activities in Kruger revolve around game drives, whether you’re on a guided tour or a self-drive visit. Other worthwhile activities include guided night drives and game walks, which are offered at most of the park’s rest camps. The options on offer in Cape Town are almost endless and depend hugely on your interests and to some extent the weather. Assuming the latter is on your side, must-do outdoor activities include the hike or cable-car ride to the top of Table Mountain, a visit to the African penguin breeding colony at Boulders, and the short but steep walk to Cape Point Lighthouse, with its stunning clifftop setting in the Cape of Good Hope sector of Table Mountain National Park. Other popular activities out of Cape Town include wine-tasting tours in the Cape Winelands, retail therapy at the iconic V&A Waterfront and boat trips to Robben Island, which is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during the apartheid era and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Then, of course, there are Cape Town’s beaches, which rank among the finest in South Africa.”

What animals can I expect to see on a combined visit to Kruger and Cape Town?

“You can expect to see plenty of wildlife on a Cape Town and Kruger safari. Of the so-called Big Five, buffalo and elephant are common in Kruger and likely to be seen on a daily basis. The majority of visitors spending more than 1 day in Kruger will also see lion and white rhino, but leopard and black rhino are more secretive so you need to be lucky to spot them. Other common wildlife in Kruger includes giraffe, zebra, warthog, hippo and a wide variety of antelope and birds. Cape Town is not primarily a wildlife destination, but marine creatures often seen in the area include whales, dolphins, seals and penguins. Look out for rock hyrax and baboon on Table Mountain and the endemic Cape mountain zebra and bontebok in the Cape of Good Hope.”

What is the best way to travel between Cape Town and Kruger?

“Cape Town and Kruger respectively lie in the far southwest and extreme northeast of South Africa, a minimum of 1,860km/1,155mi apart by road, so most people fly between them. The only airline that flies directly between the two is Airlink. Several other domestic carriers operate same-day routings, changing flights at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. Most travelers who opt to drive between Cape Town and Kruger allocate at least 10 days to the road trip. The most popular route for those in sightseeing mode is the coastal N2. It’s 700km/435mi longer than the inland route via Johannesburg, but more scenic and interesting.”

Where else should I go in South Africa (or beyond) when visiting Cape Town and Kruger?

“Don't be too ambitious with your itinerary when planning a visit to South Africa. It's a big country and the more ground you try to cover, the more time you'll spend driving between points of interest rather than sightseeing. It's also worth noting that both Cape Town and Kruger can be used as a springboard for visits to nearby attractions. Cape Town, for instance, is a great base for day or overnight excursions to the winelands around Stellenbosch, for whale watching at Hermanus, and for visits to West Coast National Park. And Kruger is easily paired with a day or two exploring the waterfalls and viewpoints of the scenic Panorama Route on the nearby Mpumalanga Escarpment. For those who take a bucket-list approach to planning holidays, Cape Town and Kruger are often visited in combination with Victoria Falls, which is a short flight away on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. A package taking in all three of these attractions would typically be a minimum of 10 days long, allowing at least 3 nights in each destination.”

What is the best time of year to visit Cape Town and Kruger?

“There is no one-size-fits-all answer to that question. Kruger has a tropical climate and a summer rainfall pattern, whereas Cape Town is relatively temperate and gets most of its rain during winter. So while Kruger is driest, coolest and best for wildlife viewing during the winter months of May to September, Cape Town is at its best during the warm, dry summer months of November to March. For the best of both climatic worlds, you could try aiming for the cusp months of March, April, September or October. That said, South Africa is generally a sunny country and seldom unbearably hot or cold. You're likely to enjoy your fair share of decent weather whatever time of year you visit.”

If you plan to Safari in Africa, I highly recommend that you book through Heritage Africa Safaris for

My husband and I ventured on a dream safari through Heritage Africa Safaris. Our travel agent Michael Giles, wanted to make everything perfect for our first visit. And, he succeeded. We loved the lodges where we stayed, and our incredible safari guides and trackers. Michael checked in with us while we were on our trip, to make sure everything was to our liking. We especially loved the Singita Sweni Lodge in South Africa. The level of care the lodge provides to its guests is unparalleled. We were fortunate to have an amazing guide and tracker, who spotted all of the “Big Five” animals on our first safari drive. The food and wine in the lodge restaurant, and the amenities in our room were far beyond what we expected in the wilds of South Africa. Michael created the perfect experience for us, and, for that, we shall be forever grateful.

This safaris group planned a trip of a lifetime for our multi generational family….attention to every detail from our 6 star lodges to the selection of the most knowledgeable guides and safari trackers. Michael Giles worked so thoughtfully with us for 2 years, patiently and thoughtfully to make this fabulous trip happen! He had personally visited each and every location and knew exactly what activities were extra special! We just loved that he followed us along the way throughout our trip, in touch with us daily to make sure we were having a great time! Honestly , I’ve never experienced such service from a travel company. Michael even surprised us along the way with unplanned treats which elevated the trip even more. Look no further than Heritage Africa for your African adventure!!! We would trust them above any other high end trip specialist !!!

Michael Giles orchestrated an awesome South African trip for us. We traveled seamlessly from Johannesburg, to Victoria Falla, to Kruger and then to Cape Town. We were educated, entertained, dined and stayed at top rated hotels at each location. Words cannot fully describe what we experienced. The memories from this trip will last us a life time. Thank you again, The Conleys

Africa was never on our travel agenda until some dear friends convinced us that we should go. They were so right! Heritage Africa assembled a tour for our group that allowed us to explore the history, culture, & nature of southern Africa from perspectives that were intellectually, emotionally & sensorily stimulating. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable, in tune with our interests, & successfully made every effort to make our experiences memorable. We experienced the stunning & diverse beauty of Africa & it's people. We sampled a delicious variety of cuisines. We developed an appreciation for the turbulent history & cultural influences that have shaped South Africa. Tour coordinator Michael Giles was "hands on" throughout our trip, ensuring that our travels, accomodations & experiences were efficiently managed & positive. We highly recommend Heritage Africa for a high quality, unique travel experience that may fill you with gratitude & that you are unlikely to ever forget.

South Africa owes me nothing! A magnificent time was had! I was lifted in Johannesburg, amazed in Zimbabwe & Kruger Shalati, and I left my heart in Cape Town. The entire trip from accommodations, to the cuisine selections, entertainment, views, and safari’s were well put together and well organized. A huge thank you to Michael Giles for an extravagant South African adventure!

We’ll ascend via cable car to the top of Cape Town’s iconic landmark, Table Mountain, for the incredible city and bay views. Then you’ll have a chance to view and photograph Table Mountain from a distance from the historic, colorful neighborhood known as Bo-Kaap (the Malay Quarter). The final stop is a guided Diamond Experience where you learn about the journey of a diamond direct from South African mines to a finger. Our tour ends at the vibrant V&A Waterfront, where you can enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Relax at a café, sip a glass of South Africa’s renowned wine or browse local art and craft shops.

Day 3: Cape Town at Leisure

So many options! Today is at leisure for independent exploration, shopping, or relaxing. Go to the beach, take an optional excursion to the scenic Winelands, or take the plunge with a thrilling great white shark cage diving excursion. You may also use your free time to visit Robben Island and see where Nelson Mandela spent nearly two decades in captivity.

Day 5: Cape Town/Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

After breakfast this morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Johannesburg. You’ll be met at the airport and driven to your lodge. Named for the Boekenhout tree which is indigenous to the area, the Mongena Private Game Lodge offers an outstanding bush safari within the Dinokeng Game Reserve. Guests are often delighted to meet the tame zebras, nyalas and springbucks which roam and reside within the main camp. Enjoy some time to freshen up and relax or consider participating in one of the reserve’s optional activities. This evening, enjoy dinner at the camp’s restaurant.

Day 6: Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

south africa safari tours cape town

This morning’s early morning game drive begins at sunrise. As a private game reserve, there are no public roads, you’ll have an opportunity to go off-roading, and you’ll have fewer safari vehicles to compete with for game viewing. With both its diverse terrain and vegetation, the Dinokeng Game Reserve offers the chance to see both browsing and grazing species. Search for the Big Five which include lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo! You may also see some of the reserve’s other residents including cheetah, brown hyena, giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala, waterbuck, wildebeest, hippo, crocodile, the endangered blue crane, and more! After your early morning drive, enjoy a buffet breakfast. You’ll have some time at leisure to participate in the game reserve’s optional activities. This afternoon enjoy a late afternoon game drive and high tea before returning to the lodge. This evening enjoy dinner at your lodge.

Day 7: Depart Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

south africa safari tours cape town

After your early morning game drive and a buffet breakfast, we'll depart for Johannesburg Airport, stopping along the way at Cambanos Curios, known for its large and varied selection of souvenirs and African goods, for any last-minute souvenirs and gifts. Our tour comes to an end as we arrive at Johannesburg airport.

Then you delve into a 14-course meal, each one from a different African country.

Full Day Great White Shark Cage Diving

south africa safari tours cape town

  • $259 , including breakfast, packed lunch and transfers

On this full-day adventure, you'll depart from Kleinbaai and enjoy 2-4 hours at sea, depending on how often the sharks visit the boat, diving and viewing from the cage. The cage holds five people at a time and each person can spend about 20 minutes in the cage! All scuba equipment, including 7mm wetsuits, are provided and you don't need a scuba license to cage dive. If you prefer not to go in the cage, you won't be missing out! You'll enjoy a picnic lunch onboard and a hot homemade soup at the lodge upon return. Hot showers and dry towels are available. This excursion is all about education and developing a new perception of the great white shark so come with all your questions! This tour is weather permitting.

Note: This tour operates on the last day in Cape Town, and it is not possible to do Robben Island or Winelands if you participate in this optional activity. Please also note that this tour must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to departure, otherwise 100% cancellation fees will apply. In addition, if bad weather prevents you from going to sea, you will be informed and given a full refund. If strong winds pick up while at sea and a return to shore is required for your safety, you will not be entitled to a refund. In addition, due to variable weather conditions and variable shark activity, diving may not always be possible and is therefore not guaranteed.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Fall in love with South Africa with this dream combination of city, nature, and safari. Landscapes set the tone, from untamed bush to majestic Table Mountain and the dramatic Cape Peninsula. Redolent storytellers fill the days: the ex-inmates of Robben Island, waddling penguins, and the Big Five animals of Thornybush Game Reserve. And then the country's unique soul provides a non-stop sensual indulgence...This really is a vacation of endless highlights.

Customizable Itinerary

Cape town - discovering iconic cape town.

Cape Town knows how to wow first-time visitors, the endearing shapes of the Table Mountain chain soaring above the city. On one side is the Atlantic Ocean, shimmering blue and counting down the hours until another evocative sunset. On the other are rolling mountains and valleys. It's Africa's finest city; packed with attractions, oozing color, yet gently encased in a relaxed atmosphere. After landing at Johannesburg International Airport, you'll continue on a domestic flight to Cape Town where you'll be met and transferred to the hotel. You'll enjoy four nights in Cape Town, and four days that explore the very best of this majestic city.

The views start from your hotel situated in the heart of Cape Town's Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Look one way for a stark beautiful mountain, and then turn around for the wonderful harbor and the endless ocean views. The Waterfront is the city's most vibrant upscale area, full of sailing ships, quaint steak restaurants, and the smells of fresh seafood. It's both a relaxed and a vibrant place to spend an evening, and the sunset views are unrivaled.

What's Included:

Cape Town - Exploring the Spectacular Cape Peninsula

A dramatic road clings to the mountain, dancing along the coastline to the very southwestern tip of Africa. It's only a 40 mile journey, but today's Cape Peninsula day trip reveals one of the continent's most beautiful landscapes. Pristine beaches pass by the window as the road winds down the Table Mountain chain. Go slow and savor the countless lookout points, secluded bays and old fishing villages standing in the shade of the peaks. Stop in Hout Bay for some of the country's best fish and chips, and enjoy a glimpse of its flourishing crayfish industry. If there's time, you can go searching for whales and seals on a boat cruise from here. Then watch the settlements disappear as you cross the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, winding ever southwards until you reach the Cape Point lighthouse. Gaze out onto the ocean. Behind the horizon the next landmass is Antarctica, so prepare yourself for a feeling of being on the edge of the world.

You'll take an alternative road back to Cape Town, first descending through fields of yellow flowers and zebra inhabited plains. Now, what's that faintly peculiar smell? And those strange yelping noises? A massive colony of jackass penguins live on Boulders Beach; their waddling antics available for all to see. Mating couples can be found beneath bushes; others are diving off the rocks, and many are just standing in the sand, gently rocking side to side like only a penguin knows how. If you're lucky, you can be seated on the beach and the penguins will be tottering and wobbling just a few meters away. Simon's Town completes your tour, a colonial gem that seems relatively unchanged since the 19th century.

Cape Town - Experiencing Robben Island and Table Mountain

Today is about Cape Town's two most famous attractions. Robben Island has an eerie feel, whispers and secrets left behind in its soil, memories etched into the barren walls of the prison. Nelson Mandela spent 18 years incarcerated here in isolation. He's just the pinnacle of a long line of political prisoners who turned this hell-hole into a triumph of human spirit over adversity. Ex inmates conduct the tours, offering thought provoking stories to accompany the poignant sights. Ask questions because these old prisoners are keen to share experiences. You get a real feeling for the institutional brutality and prejudice that used to hang in the air. But a trip to Robben Island imbues everyone with even greater respect for Mandela and his counterparts, in particular, their dedication to reconciliation after apartheid. Reaching Robben Island involves a short boat trip from the jetty at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Table Mountain fills your afternoon, the iconic Cape Town landmark offering unforgettable views. It's a difficult and steep 90 minute hike to the summit. Fortunately, the journey can also be made in a revolving cable car. Easy walking trails cover the broad summit, allowing you to explore different viewpoints and take in a full 360º adoration of the landscape. Gaze south for an aerial view of the Cape Peninsula that you explored yesterday. Look out west for the Atlantic Ocean and its line of sandy beaches. The east brings green valleys and mountain passes. And standing beneath your eyes is Cape Town; pick out the waterfront and harbor, watch the highways cut across the city, and admire the two sister peaks: Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. A waterfall of cloud often descends over Table Mountain in late afternoon, blocking the views but looking majestic from below. If the weather isn't on your side, don't worry, the mountain is almost always clear in the mornings, so you have time to savor it all tomorrow.

Cape Town - Immersed in the Colors of Cape Town

South Africa's Mother City could take up weeks on a travel itinerary. On your final day you can choose from an eclectic blend of attractions and experiences. Take a wine tour and indulge in the Cape Winelands, an area of lush valleys that teem with cute farmhouses and endless vineyards. Wander through the city's vivid streets and be shocked by the uninhibited use of color, like the terraced houses of Bo Kaap, the stalls of atmospheric street markets, or the tans of local Capetonians on Camps Bay beach. As always, a priceless sunset and wonderful dining experiences fill your evening.

Johannesburg - Old World Elegance in Johannesburg

Your five star hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, and its sumptuous interiors offer a real throwback to Renaissance elegance. Every corridor screams “wow,” each room is a blueprint for luxury accommodation, and the graceful lobbies are as beautiful as anything on the continent. You'll be driven to the Cape Town airport for your Johannesburg bound flight, and will be transferred to this signature hotel. Situated in the exclusive business district of Sandton, and gazing out over Mandela Square, you'll have a day of indulging in old world luxury. Sandton reveals the energetic savvy hub of South Africa. It's also possible to explore more of Johannesburg, like the Soweto township or the Cradle of Humankind.

Thornybush Private Game Reserve - Unforgettable Big Five Safari

You'll fly to Hoedspruit from Johannesburg, where you'll be met and transferred to your Greater Kruger Game Reserve lodge. This northeastern part of South Africa is a vast expanse of unspoiled bush, teeming with a wonderfully diverse collection of nature's greatest animals. The famous Kruger National Park is directly adjacent, but the advantage of Thornybush is the intimacy and lack of crowds. It has the same wildlife as Kruger, yet it offers a far more personal and relaxed safari experience. Your lodge is one for the discerning traveler; the luxurious chalets, massive en-suite bathrooms and your own outdoor shower in the pristine African bush are something to write home about. Spend lazy afternoons around the idyllic pool, enjoy candlelit dinners accompanied by nature's soundtrack, and watch the wildlife from your patio.

And what wildlife there is to discover! Hippos frolic in the mud, bumping into each other as they jockey for position in the shallow swamps. Lions stick to their favorite haunts, a pride dominating its kingdom and looking resplendent on the savannah. Sometimes you see them out hunting, lionesses showing wonderful grace even when they're attacking a zebra. Elephants tower above the open-topped safari vehicle, their flapping ears and immense trunks making for unforgettable moments in the bush. Now the buffalo come clambering for attention, plodding a path towards the vehicle and always chewing on the lush long grasses.

Every morning you'll be out on a long game drive, enjoying the savannah at its most active time of day. As the sun begins to beat down most of the park goes to sleep, the big mammals resting in the shade during the early afternoon. However, now is a good time for the kudu and eland to graze with minimal interruption from the cats. Spend the hottest part of the day relaxing at the lodge, and then head out for another unforgettable game drive in the afternoon. Local guides and rangers adeptly understand the nuances of Thornybush, and their precious skills help you seek out the more elusive of Africa's animals.

Hiding in the trees are leopards, beautiful hunters that always stay away from the limelight. Cheetahs are less elusive and just as stunning, and they'll happily laze out in the open. Hyenas scurry past, hartebeest wander through the trees, and then you turn a corner and find hundreds of one ton buffalos covering a waterhole.  On the first game drive you're always eager and excited, anxious to catch all of these indelible sights. But safari is best enjoyed when you relax and wait for the natural world to slowly cast its spell.

Rhinos are quickly disappearing from the planet, but they've got one remaining haven. Over half of the world's wild rhino population lives in the area in and around Kruger National Park. That's over 10,000 according to recent estimates. Drive into Thornybush and the dusty path is blocked by four of them. They stand and wait without a care in the world. Then they walk on, a certain elegance contradicting their immense frames. But the safari truck doesn't move, because there's another gang of rhinos following the same route across the Bushveld. In the rest of Africa people go on safari hoping to get a glimpse of a rhino and lion. So savor the treats that are served up here.

Hoedspruit - Fond Farewells to South Africa

After breakfast you'll be transferred back to Hoedspruit for the short flight to Johannesburg. Upon arrival you will connect to your international flight back home. The vacation may be over, but the memories will linger for many years.

Trip Highlights

Tips for Visiting Cape Town Attractions

Embarking on a journey to Cape Town is a thrilling adventure, and to make your experience truly unforgettable, we’ve curated a list of essential tips for navigating the city’s most iconic attractions with ease and enjoyment.

Best Time To Visit Cape Town

Envision setting forth on a tranquil adventure to Cape Town, a city where each season unveils a new facet of its alluring beauty. Your perfect moment to visit? It intricately depends on your desires and the experiences you seek in this vibrant metropolis.

From our perspective, the prime time to immerse yourself in the wonders of Cape Town spans from December to April, the summer months in the southern hemisphere.

However, it might be wise to sidestep the peak periods of Christmas and New Year to truly enjoy the city’s essence without the hustle and bustle. January, a bustling and pricey month, could also be avoided to ensure a serene and budget-friendly experience.

February emerges as the golden period, where the summer vibrancy is still palpable, yet the city gradually transitions out of its peak season.

Following suit, March and April present themselves as excellent choices, offering splendid weather and a respite from the crowds, allowing you to explore Cape Town in its full glory but with tranquility.

How To Get To Cape Town

Navigating your way to the heart of Cape Town is a breeze, with several convenient options at your disposal. The Cape Town International Airport (CPT), situated approximately 20 km from the bustling city center, serves as your gateway to this vibrant city.

Depending on your exact destination within Cape Town, the journey from the airport might extend by 30 minutes, so plan accordingly. While various modes of transportation are available, many visitors find Uber the most economical and convenient choice.

Not only is it a popular service in the area, but it also offers affordability that is hard to beat – a trip from the picturesque Sea Point to the airport, for instance, generally costs around R237, roughly equivalent to $13 USD.

If you prefer steering the wheel yourself, renting a car for your stay is a fantastic option, allowing you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace.

How To Get Around Cape Town

Navigating through the picturesque landscapes and vibrant neighborhoods of Cape Town is a vital part of your adventure. Here, we explore the most convenient and popular modes of transportation that the city has to offer:

Uber/Rideshare Apps

In Cape Town, rideshare apps like Uber have become a popular choice for locals and tourists. These apps offer a safe, reliable, and affordable way to traverse the city without the hassle of finding parking spaces in busy areas.

Download the app on your smartphone, and you’ll have quick access to rides wherever you are in the city.

Get a Rental Car

Renting a car is a fantastic option for those who prefer more autonomy in their travels. It not only allows you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace but also makes it easier to visit the picturesque locales that are off the beaten path. This will give you access to more places to see in Cape Town in a shorter time.

I recommend using Discover Cars to scout for the best deals. This platform compares prices from various rental car agencies in the area, generally helping you save substantially in the long run.

Public Bus System

Taking the public bus is an excellent choice if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture. Cape Town boasts a well-maintained and efficient bus system connecting all major city parts.

It’s not only a cost-effective way to get around but also gives you a chance to experience the city like a local, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and perhaps discovering some hidden gems along the way.

Acquaint yourself with the different routes and schedules to maximize this transportation option.

Where To Stay in Cape Town

Embarking on a journey to the expansive city of Cape Town can initially seem overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure about the best locales to settle in. But fret not; I’m here to guide you through the prime neighborhoods that have enriched my visits to this vibrant city.

This locale often evokes a sense of affordability akin to a budget-friendly San Diego for visitors.

It stands out as a secure area in contrast to the bustling Central Business District (CBD), offering numerous dining options and a stunning seaside promenade that eliminates the need for a vehicle.

It has become my preferred destination for leisurely summer getaways lasting approximately three months.

Central Business District/Kloof:

Positioned east of Signal Hill, extending around the famous Kloof Street towards Lion’s Head, this region is a hub for modern eateries, bars, and lively nightlife.

Despite its vibrant atmosphere, be prepared for a denser urban setting, slightly removed from the coastal charm. It stands as the premier choice for those seeking an energetic nightlife.

Nestled between the hills and the sea, Camps Bay offers a luxurious retreat with a picturesque backdrop, albeit at a higher price range.

While it houses a few establishments, anticipate a longer commute, especially during peak hours, to reach the CBD for a wider variety of amenities. It’s the ultimate destination for those yearning for a tranquil seaside retreat away from the urban hustle.

Green Point:

Situated between Sea Point and the Waterfront, this residential enclave is renowned for its lush surroundings, featuring numerous public parks and the iconic Cape Town stadium. It is an excellent base for digital nomads or those seeking a homely atmosphere.

Dewaterkant/V&A Waterfront:

This area is a hotspot for tourists and is close to the vibrant activities at the V&A Waterfront. While there might be better choices for extended stays, particularly for digital nomads, it offers excellent walkability, making it a favorite for short-term vacationers.

I have meticulously selected the top 4 hotels in Cape Town, South Africa, each offering a unique blend of luxury, comfort, and picturesque views, promising an unforgettable stay.

  • The Silo Hotel: Situated atop the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, this luxury hotel offers rooms with a blend of industrial and elegant designs, providing breathtaking views of the V&A Waterfront, the city, and Table Mountain.
  • Cape Grace Hotel: Nestled on a private quay between the vibrant V&A Waterfront and the tranquil yacht marina, this hotel offers a blend of modern luxury and traditional Cape culture, making it a unique place to stay.

South Africa is home to some of the most preserved safaris, such as the Kruger National Park. Here you may see “The Big Five” animals: Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhinoceros, and Elephant.

Established in 1898 and named after former South African president Paul Kruger, the Kruger National Park is one of the largest national parks in South Africa, spanning 19,000 square kilometers.

The park serves as a protected area for South Africa ’s wildlife, where visitors can enjoy activities such as game drives, guided walks, and animal watching.
