Album Review: SPELLLING & the Mystery School

Pitchfork august 24, 2023.

As  SPELLLING , Chrystia Cabral dances the line between straightforward dream pop and aquatic, experimental electronic folk, creating music that both roils the soul and inspires whimsical daydreams. She expanded upon her tactile sound on 2021’s audacious  The Turning Wheel , using rich instrumentation to animate her folkloric stories. Working with her touring band on new album  SPELLLING & the Mystery School , Cabral reshapes previous album cuts with fresh arrangements, giving them the rhythmic, freeform feel of live versions. Her voice has never sounded better, even as some of the album makes you want to turn back to the delights of her charmingly shambling earlier work.

Spellling Spellling & the Mystery School Review: Unraveling Life’s Mysteries

Slant magazine august 23, 2023.

With a vibrant kaleidoscope of sounds and ethereal ambiance, the singer brings both her fantasy world and reality to life.

Chrystia Cabral’s Spellling & the Mystery School  is a collection of songs from throughout her career as Spellling, but with a twist, as each track has undergone a complete reimagination. The already eerie “Under the Sun,” from 2019’s  Mazy Fly , has been masterfully reworked into an even eerier sci-fi ballad with an ominous string arrangement and an interlude punctuated by synth flashes, while “Phantom Farewell,” from 2017’s  Pantheon of Me , beefs up some of the song’s original sonic distortions for a bigger, grander sound.

Since the release of her 2017 debut  Pantheon of Me , Tia Cabral, aka  SPELLLING , has proven she can handily create expansive, fantastical worlds from the safety of her studio. But with each new record—including 2019’s synth-driven  Mazy Fly  and 2021’s orchestrally ambitious  The Turning Wheel —Cabral has found new possibilities of expression on the stage. On her latest voyage,  SPELLLING & The Mystery School , she looks back on her songbook and redraws the lines around some of her biggest crowd-pleasers.

Oakland singer/songwriter and experimentalist SPELLLING is following up her 2021 masterpiece  The Turning Wheel  this August with  SPELLLING & The Mystery School , a collection of tracks that surf between minimalism, glitchy percussive rhythm and hypnotic pianistic patterns. Full of mysticism and drama and haunting, evocative exploration, The gravity of SPELLLING’s songwriting is immense and, in turn, she makes left-field pop music that is both alien and ambitious.  SPELLING & The Mystery School  is on our radar because, after teaser singles “Cherry” and  “Under the Sun,”  it’s shaping up to be one of the best things she’s made—which says a great deal, given that The Turning Wheel was one of the very best records of 2021

Spellling — real name: Chrystia “Tia” Cabral — knows how to sing in delicate whispers, but her elocution can contradict that daintiness. How Dracula, Tarot Cards, and Drinking in the Shower Inspired SPELLLING’s New Album

‘Tia Cabral is a shapeshifter, with an eye and ear tilting toward the fantastical. In the visuals for her experimental pop project SPELLLING, she has appeared as an entity dipped in glittery goo, a rodeo princess, and a silver-faced harlequin. SPELLLING – “Turning Wheel”

‘SPELLLING is releasing her new album, The Turning Wheel, in a couple weeks. We’ve heard two tracks from it so far, “Little Dear” and “Boys At School,” and today we’re getting the title track, which sounds like an elaborate ’60s pop fantasia with an appropriately theatrical video to match.’

‘In a press release Cabral explains that the new song “steps back into my younger self, my teenage self to voice my angst, desires and disillusionments. I knew when I created the main motif on the piano that it was striking something really raw and both delicate and fierce. The notes just immediately transported me to the era of my youth, of this time when you are really beginning to confront the mirror of yourself to the outside world.”

The Turning Wheel draws on synth pop, R&B and soul and sees Cabral co-producing and orchestrating an ensemble of 31 musicians, including banjo, harp, bassoon and trombone. Originally meant to be released last September, the twelve-track LP was delayed due to the pandemic and resulted in instrumentalists recording in socially-distanced and remote studio sessions.’

SPELLLING – “Boys At School”

Stereogum may 11, 2021.

‘The Bay Area’s Chrystia Cabral is back with a new SPELLLING single, “Boys At School,” from her forthcoming album The Turning Wheel. This follows the lead single, “Little Dear,” which previewed a more upbeat, poppy direction. This new track starts as an eccentric piano ballad with haunting vocals and atmospheric synths, and gradually transforms into an intense indie rock anthem.’

Our Take: SPELLLING’S ‘Mazy Fly’ Will Make You Believe In Magic

Atwood magazine march 4, 2019.

Having been quoted as drawing inspirations “from messages in her dreams,” Chrystia Cabral, who goes by SPELLLING, conjures forth a very cerebral soundscape; one filled with flashes of light shining out from the shadowy scene, every inch of which she has carefully crafted.

SPELLLING Mazy Fly Review

Pitchfork february 22, 2019.

There’s a song on SPELLLING’s debut, 2017’s Pantheon of Me, where the vocalist and musician Tia Cabral moans over a high-pitched, murderous guitar refrain, one that sounds like tiny gremlins fiending for blood: “I’m not going back to him.” She repeats herself, slightly changing the plea, as layers of ghostly vocals spill over each other. “I’m not going back to the grave.” Again, more desperate than before, she wails, “I’m not going back to the grave.”

Album Of The Week: SPELLLING Mazy Fly

Stereogum february 19, 2019.

As SPELLLING, Cabral makes music that’s basically impossible to categorize. She plays around with all sorts of dark and vaporous sounds: gothed-out horror-movie synth textures, new-wave bloop-riffs, queasy ambient sputters, bluesy squelches, creeped-out smooth-jazz saxophones, pillowy ’80s-R&B bass-riffs, spindly indie-rock guitar-murmurs. As a singer, Cabral is rooted in soul, and she’s capable of bending notes with astonishing force and conviction.

J. Geils Band’s Peter Wolf announces summer tour dates around New England

Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band hits the road in New England this summer.

It’s been a minute since Peter Wolf hit the road, but that’s about to change. The former J. Geils Band singer has announced a string of New England dates that’ll give longtime fans a chance to see the Hard Drivin’ Man do what he does better than most: Perform live onstage.

Wolf, who celebrated his 78th birthday last month, is doing a series of unplugged shows he’s calling the “Waiting On The Moon Tour: An Acoustic Evening of Stories and Songs.” He’ll be joined on the July dates by two frequent collaborators — guitarists Duke Levine and Kevin Barry.

Though best known as the electrifying frontman of the J. Geils Band, Wolf has released eight well-reviewed albums under his own name, including 2002′s “ Sleepless ,” which Rolling Stone ranked No. 427 on a list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Lately, Wolf, who grew up in the Bronx but has lived in Boston for several decades, has been keeping a low profile while he writes a memoir. Anyone familiar with the singer’s backstory knows the book could be fascinating. In his late teens, Wolf lived in an apartment around the corner from Club 47, the Harvard Square coffeehouse that became Club Passim, and hung out with the likes of Mose Allison, Bill Monroe, Otis Spann, Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters.

The first of the seven shows are July 5 and 6 at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, Maine. Wolf will also perform in Fall River July 12, Westerly, R.I., July 13, Natick July 18, Norfolk, Conn., July 19, and Rockport July 25. Ticket info can be found at peterwolf.com .

No one rocks like The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, band thrill on Hackney Diamonds Tour

spelling band tour

HOUSTON − It’s not only stunning, but somewhat miraculous that more than 60 years after their first tour, the Rolling Stones are still filling stadiums.

It’s even more head-spinning to realize that along with their treasured hits, the Rolling Stones are enhancing their setlist with a trio of songs from last year’s well-received “Hackney Diamonds” – their first album of original material in 18 years and the impetus for this 16-city tour.

We’d call it a victory lap, but frontman Mick Jagger is better suited for marathons.

At the kickoff April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston, the core triumvirate of Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with their supporting cast of exceptional musicians and singers – hit the massive stage to the sounds of Richards’ slashing out the riff of, fittingly, “Start Me Up.”

Jagger, the nimble CEO of Stones Inc., peacocked in a silver shimmering jacket, his elastic legs a mere pedestal for his rotating torso.

Richards, still owning his disheveled pirate look with a knit cap and multicolored scarf dangling from his hip, and Wood, grinning continuously and occasionally scampering down the lengthy catwalk, retained their roles as faithful consiglieres.

There isn’t a patch of smooth facial skin among them (Jagger and Richards are 80 and Wood is 76). But with the energy to plow through an 18-song, two-hour set – yes, shorter than previous Stones shows, but still fulfilling – no one is looking to crown them as pageant winners.

While the band needed a couple of songs to fully find their groove – the striding cadence of a reworked “Get Off Of My Cloud” and a ramshackle “Rocks Off” felt curious rather than robust – Jagger compensated with his riveting presence and still-supple vocals.

Along with the “Hackney Diamonds” songs plucked for their major live debuts (the band played a few of the new tracks at an intimate New York club gig in October ), including the feisty “ Angry ” and encore of gospelized “ Sweet Sounds of Heaven ,” the 1966 tune “ Out of Time ” also received its U.S. debut. The band revived it last year during some performances for the overseas Sixty tour.

“I don’t think you really knew it, but you got to know it,” Jagger said with a smile after leading the nearly full stadium through the arm-waving chorus.

As typical for a Rolling Stones production, the stage ran the width of the stadium, blanketed with screens beaming images of the band with magnificent clarity. Closeups of drummer Steve Jordan, who assumed rhythm duties after the 2021 death of original drummer Charlie Watts , joyfully thundering through the gem “ Paint It, Black ” and birthday boy Chuck Leavell ripping out a fleet-fingered solo on his Yamaha keyboard on “Honky Tonk Women” offered fans a peek at the magic happening a few feet behind Jagger and Co.

During the always-visceral “ Sympathy for the Devil ,” as serpents and fire crawled across the screens, Jagger prowled through the sinister groove, augmented by percussion provided by background vocalist Bernard Fowler and chunky bass lines from Darryl Jones.

Keyboardist Matt Clifford added French horn to “ You Can’t Always Get What You Want ” while Jagger, playing an acoustic guitar, strolled through the message of acquiescence that escalated into a gospel throwdown.

The horn duo of Karl Denson and Tim Ries coated many familiar anthems – “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Miss You” among them – with their rich brass sounds. But, as fans have realized over the decades, the ominous “Gimme Shelter” remains a centerpiece of any Rolling Stones concert, and Jagger has a new onstage playmate in powerhouse background vocalist Chanel Haynes.

The woman who starred as Tina Turner in the West End musical of Turner’s life and officially became part of the band last year, steamrolled through “Gimme Shelter” with a voice blaring attitude and vigor. As she and Jagger strolled the catwalk, sharing vocals and chemistry, Jagger wisely backed off a couple of times, allowing Haynes to unleash her theatrical verve.

But this is still Jagger’s circus, and whether he’s bobbing like a jittery prizefighter or wiggling his shoulders like the world’s most slender Chippendales dancer, he is an octogenarian who captivates.

The band has enlisted various openers throughout the tour. In Houston, blues-rock guitar ace – and Texas native – Gary Clark Jr. landed the opening night slot and for 45 minutes, enchanted the mostly full stadium.

With a large band – five musicians, three background vocalists – behind him, Clark was the epitome of cool in dark shades and a bandana as he took the stage with “Maktub” from his recently released fourth album, “JPEG Raw.”

Clark is a big name for an opener (then again, it is the Rolling Stones) and he utilized his time well with massive licks on the crunch rockers “Bright Lights” and “This is Who We Are,” with singer Naala joining him.

The soul-inflected “Feed the Babies” seared as a set highlight, as the singer-guitarist displayed sizzling playing and a breezy vibe for the receptive crowd.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Willie Nelson performs at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

July 12, 2023

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.

IN PICTURES: American rock band Incubus delivers nostalgic concert for Pinoy fans

At a glance.

A night filled with high energy and rocked-out vibes, as Incubus returned to the Philippine stage with a sold-out concert in Araneta Coliseum on April 25, presented by Willbros Live.

Performing again for their Pinoy fans six years after their last concert in 2018, the band consisting of Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Jose Pasillas, DJ Kilmore, and their new bassist Nicole Row made the night memorable for all the millennial titos and titas of Manila.

The full-house arena was filled with the loudest cheers, while the fans waited for the band to perform. At exactly, 8:45 pm, the lights went dim, Brandon and his band took the center stage and opened the concert with their song "Quicksand."

Brandon Boyd.jpg

The crowd went wild when they followed their first song with absolute Incubus classics, "Nice To Know You," "Anna Molly," "Stellar," "Sick Sad Little World."

Before heading to another song, Brandon gave a short message to all the Pinoy fans who attended their concert.

"So, how are you guys doing? It's been a while," Brandon said.

The night went on as the band performed the songs, "Circles," "The Warmth," and "Pardon Me." To which the fans sang along with the lyrics.

"Loud and beautiful. Thank you so much," Brandon said.

Amid the electrifying atmosphere of the concert in the Philippines, Brandon's performance of 'Karma, Come Back' reached a new level when he bravely took off his shirt, adding to the already intense heat.

Mike Einziger.jpg

Showing off his amazing physique and unique tattoos, it was clear that the ladies went crazy when Brandon was shirtless throughout the whole concert.

Aside from their classic hits, Incubus also did a special tribute for The Beatles as they performed the song "Come Together."

As the crowd sang along and gave their loudest cheers, the band continued their set with "Are You In?," "Vitamin," "Glory Box" and "Warning."

Jose Passilas.jpg

Brandon also took the time to introduce their new bassist Nicole Row, who replaced Ben Kenney after he went through brain surgery.

"We have here our new bass, good job Nicole!" Brandon said.

He then continued the show with another cover song " Let's Dance" from David Bowie.

Without showing any signs of tiredness, the energy of the crowd continued as he sang another fan favorite "Megalomaniac", to which the fans sang along with him on the lyrics "Step down, step down!"

As a testament to their love for all the Pinoy fans, the band ended the concert with the ultimate banger songs, "Drive" and "Wish You Were Here."
