• श्रीलंका एक प्राचीन देश है, जिसका इतिहास लगभग 2500 से भी अधिक वर्ष का है। अनेक सारी प्राचीन कहानियां और इतिहास के पन्नों में श्रीलंका एक संपन्न और प्रभुत्वशाली देश बताया गया है।

• हजारों वर्षों पूर्व श्रीलंका का नाम ‘लंका’ था। तब यहां पर ‘रावण’ राज किया करता था। यहां पर रावण की सोने की लंका थी। रावण यहां पर ही ‘माता सीता’ को उठा कर लाया था। उसके बाद भगवान श्री राम और हनुमान जी सहित बंदरों की सेना ने भारत से श्रीलंका के बीच मौजूद विशाल समंदर में पत्थरों का मार्ग बना कर रहा आए थें।
• आज भी भारत व श्रीलंका के बीच भगवान श्री राम के हाथों द्वारा बनाया गया पत्थरों का मार्ग मौजूद है, जिसे रामसेतु’ कहते हैं। आज भी राम सेतु को साफ तौर पर देखा जा सकता है।
• यदि हम बात करें अंग्रेजी शासनकाल की तो सन 1802 में अंग्रेजों ने श्रीलंका में अपना शासन स्थापित कर दिया था। उसके बाद भारत की तरह श्रीलंका के लोग क‌ई वर्षों तक अंग्रेजों से लड़ते रहें। आखिरकार सन् 1983 में अंग्रेज श्रीलंका छोड़ कर चले गए। उसके बाद श्रीलंका ने गणतंत्र राष्ट्र की नींव रखीं।
• श्रीलंका में अनेक सारे ऐसे धार्मिक और प्राचीन स्थान है, जो पर्यटकों की दृष्टि से लाजवाब और खूबसूरती का केंद्र है। हर वर्ष लाखों की संख्या में पर्यटक श्रीलंका का दौरा करते हैं।

कहा जाता है कि इसी चोटी पर बैठकर बौद्ध भिक्षुओं ने संपूर्ण विश्व में शांति तथा सद्भावना का संदेश दिया था और यहां से ही बौद्ध धर्म का प्रचार व प्रसार किया था।

श्रीलंका के प्रमुख आकर्षक जगहों की सूची में उनावातुना का मुख्य स्थान है। यह एक छोटा सा समुद्र तटीय क्षेत्र है। यहां पर अनेक सारे पर्यटक आते हैं। इस समुद्र तटीय क्षेत्र पर सफेद रेत है।

यह समुद्र तटीय क्षेत्र गोवा बीच जैसा अनुभव कराता है। इस तट पर कछुए व रंगीन मछली देखने को मिलती हैं तथा यहां पर मिलने वाले स्वादिष्ट भोजन भी पर्यटकों को अपनी और आकर्षित करता है।

पर्यटकों की दृष्टि से श्रीलंका में घूमने वाली मुख्य व प्रमुख जगहों में उदावलावे नेशनल पार्क भी शामिल है।‌ यह पार्क एक खूबसूरती का ऐसा नजारा है कि यहां पर आने के बाद आपको प्रकृति का वास्तविक रूप और खूबसूरती देखने को मिलेगा।

इस नेशनल पार्क में आपको खूबसूरती के साथ-साथ अनेक सारे जंगली जानवर देखने को मिलेंगे, जिसमें बंदर, मगरमच्छ, भैंस,सियार, मोर व हिरण शामिल है, जो आपका बखूबी मनोरंजन करेंगे।

रावण वॉटरफॉल

श्रीलंका में पर्यटकों की दृष्टि से घूमने जाने वाले लोग एक बार रावण वाटरफॉल पर जरूर जाते हैं, क्योंकि यह जलप्रपात अत्यंत पुराना है। कहा जाता है कि यह रावण के समय का है।‌अत्यंत ऊंची चोटियों से गिरने वाले जलप्रपात पर लोग देखने और झूलने के लिए जाते हैं।‌

यहां पर अत्यंत ठंडा पानी है, जो ऊंचे-ऊंचे झरनों से गिरता है। यहां पर अनेक सारे हरे भरे पेड़-पौधे और जंगली जानवर देखने को मिल जाएंगे। रावण वाटरफॉल पहुंचने पर आपको प्रकृति का वास्तविक रूप और उसकी खूबसूरती देखने को मिलेंगे।

श्रीलंका के पूर्वी तट पर एक खूबसूरत बीच स्थित है, जिसका नाम है अरुगम वे बीच (Arugam Bay Beach)। इस बीच पर मौज मस्ती करने वाले लोगों को ज्यादा देखा जाता है क्योंकि यहां पर दारु, बीयर, मांस, मच्छी, खाना-पीना, मौज मस्ती करना, रहना, सोना सब कुछ उपलब्ध है।

यहां पर आने वाले लोग कई कई दिनों तक रुकते हैं। यहां से प्रकृति का एक बेहतरीन नजारा देखने को मिलता है। यहां से चलने वाली आबोहवाएं भी प्रकृति का एहसास कराती है। यहां पर आने वाले लोग फुल मौज मस्ती करते हैं।

टूथ का मंदिर

श्रीलंका के प्रमुख दर्शनीय स्थलों में टूथ का मंदिर शामिल है।‌ यह मंदिर अत्यंत पवित्र माना जाता है क्योंकि यहां पर बौद्ध भिक्षु की मृत्यु हुई थी, जिसके उपरांत बनाया गया मंदिर है। कहा जाता है कि दांत लेने के लिए यहां पर यह मंदिर बनाया गया है।‌ हालांकि दांत को चुराने की कोशिश नाकाम हुई है।‌

फिर भी यहां पर आने वाले पर्यटक दांत को देखने के लिए आते हैं। कहा जाता है कि जो लोग श्रीलंका की यात्रा पर आए हैं? व टूथ का मंदिर की यात्रा किए बिना वापस लौट गए, तो उनकी श्रीलंका की यात्रा को अधूरी मानी जाती है।

अत्यंत विशाल और ऊंची चोटी पर बौद्ध भिक्षुओं का एक मठ बना हुआ है। यह चोटी बौद्ध भिक्षुओं से संबंध रखती हैं। यहां पर अनेक सारे बोध समुदायों के पद चिन्ह अंकित किए गए हैं। यहां पर हिंदुओं के भगवान शिव के भी पदचिन्ह सुरक्षित रखे गए हैं।

यहां का नजारा देखने लायक हैं। इस चोटी पर खड़े होने से आपको कुदरत का करिश्मा देखने को मिलता है। यहां से आप लगभग आधे श्रीलंका को देख सकते हैं। यहां का नजारा अत्यंत लाजवाब है।

गाले का किला

श्रीलंका के ऐतिहासिक इमारतों में ‘गाले का किला’ स्थित है।‌ यहां पर पर्यटन की दृष्टि से आने वाले लोगों की संख्या काफी ज्यादा है क्योंकि यह एक प्राचीन किला है।‌ जिस का नजारा देखने में आकर्षक और अद्भुत लगता है। यहां पर बनी भूल-भुलैया आप को आश्चर्यचकित कर सकती हैं।

वर्तमान समय में यह एक आधुनिक होटल बन चुका है। यहां पर आप खरीदारी कर सकते हैं व मौज मस्ती भी कर सकते हैं। इस किले का निर्माण सन 1505 में पुर्तगालियों ने करवाया था, तब से यह किला अपनी मजबूती के साथ खड़ा है।

याला नेशनल पार्क

श्रीलंका में जाने वाले लोग याला नेशनल पार्क जरूर जाना चाहते हैं क्योंकि यहां पर अन्य प्रकार के वन्य जीव जंतु रहते हैं, जिन्हें देखने का नजारा शानदार लगता है। यहां पर वन्य जीव अभ्यारण भी स्थित हैं, जो आपका बखूबी मनोरंजन करवायेंगे।

Sri Lanka is truly spellbinding and will suit any traveler’s interests with its top tourist attractions. The small island nation is chock-full of adventure activities like surfing and trekking.

There are several highly religious sites for the religious devotee, and unbelievable historical tourist attractions for history buffs in Sri Lanka . However, no one can dispute Sri Lanka’s incredible natural beauty. Whether it be en-route to a perfect surf break, visiting a historical site or on a pilgrimage, lush greenery and exotic animals are never far away.

15. Nine Arch Bridge [SEE MAP]

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights is the Nine Arch Bridge in the small mountain town of Ella. This viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the surrounding area, which is made up of verdant greenery and tea fields.

Visitors can watch trains roll over the bridge as they make their way along the Demodara Loop. Constructed in the early days of the railway expansion in Sri Lanka, the bridge is particularly impressive because it is made of cement, stone and brick, without the use of any steel.

14. Mihintale [SEE MAP]

Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country.

Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.

13. Unawatuna [SEE MAP]

This white sand beach in the small seaside town of Unawatuna is a great place to relax. There are a number of snorkeling and diving operators in town who take advantage of the abundance of coral reefs just off the beach.

Colorful fish and plentiful turtles are the norm in these waters. There are a number of great dining options along the beach, which welcome visitors to use their sun loungers and relax the day away with a drink in hand.

12. Gal Viharaya [SEE MAP]

Visitors can find Gal Viharaya in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Gal Viharaya is a famous Buddhist site and is celebrated for its many caves and large sculptures of Buddha which are carved into the rock faces. They are extremely well preserved, even though they were crafted in the 12th century.

To the side of one of the statues, a code of conduct is inscribed. The code, when followed, was meant to purify the Buddhist monks and bring them together under one order. It was created by a very famous king: King Parakramabahu the first. Today, Gal Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular sites of pilgrimage.

11. Kataragama Festival [SEE MAP]

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Festival takes place every year in July or August and is dedicated to one of the Hindu gods. It takes place over a two-week period and people from all over the world come to join in.

The festival is jam-packed with parades of elephants and colorfully dressed performers. There are countless traditional dances that take place; with musicians, acrobats, and fire-breathers feeding into the festival’s contagious energy.

10. Udawalawe National Park [SEE MAP]

There are few places in the world where elephant sightings are so frequent. However, elephants are not the only animals to see within Udawalawe National Park; peacocks, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and deer also roam the area.

Safaris are most popular in the early morning hours when animals are at their most active. The biodiversity of the park can be attributed to its varied landscape; it is flanked by mountain ranges to the north with wetlands and rivers hugging the grasslands and forests at the base of the mountains.

9. Ravana Falls [SEE MAP]

The beautiful Ravana Falls are used for bathing in the hot summer months. In the rainy season, the water flow is exceptionally strong and is an impressive sight. The falls are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and the nearby cave complex is rich in local legend.

Conveniently located on the main road on the way to Ella town, the caves are a common stop off point for visitors during their journey. Many cheeky monkeys live in the surrounding trees and they are often seen on the roadside dining on fruit. However, don’t let them get too close, as sometimes they can get over-friendly with visitors.

8. Dambulla Cave Temple [SEE MAP]

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place.

There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.

7. Mirissa [SEE MAP]

Mirissa is the ultimate Sri Lankan beach getaway. The beautiful long beach is flanked by tall overhanging palm trees and lined with modern restaurants and hotels. The restaurants have western style food at Sri Lankan prices. Just off the beach is Parrot Rock. It has a small staircase leading to the top that offers great views of the ocean and coastline.

Day trips from Mirissa include whale watching, snorkeling and surfing. Weligama, just a few kilometers from Mirissa, is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Come happy hour and into the evening, many the restaurants turn their venues into beach clubs and pump out drinks and tunes.

6. Arugam Bay [SEE MAP]

Arugam Bay is revered by surfers. This small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka embodies the quintessential laid-back surf lifestyle. The Main Point surf break is within walking distance from the town center, but is only recommended for advanced or intermediate surfers.

Otherwise, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm are two great surf beaches for beginner and intermediate surfers; a short tuk-tuk ride will take you there. Often elephants and peacocks can be spotted beside the road, just outside of town. The main strip in Arugam Bay town is lined with restaurants and hotels where you can dine on anything from traditional Sri Lankan curry to full English breakfasts.

5. Temple of the Tooth [SEE MAP]

The Temple of the Tooth is a highly sacred place. The temple contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Legend has it that the tooth was taken from the Buddha on his deathbed, then smuggled to Sri Lanka from India. It was smuggled in the hair of a princess, after her father’s kingdom had been besieged.

It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.

4. Adam's Peak [SEE MAP]

At the summit of Adam’s Peak is a footprint cast in stone. It has spiritual significance to a number of different religions, however, there is currently a Buddhist monastery at the summit. To the Buddhists, the footprint is that of Buddha’s; to Christians, the footprint is Adam’s; and to Hindus, the footprint is attributed to Shiva.

The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise.

3. Galle Fort [SEE MAP]

It is easy to get lost in the cobblestoned alleyways and streets within Galle Fort. Today the area is full of modern restaurants, hotels, clothing, and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, snake charmers and buskers line the seawall.

However, the fort was not always such a cosmopolitan spot. A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle , they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.

2. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]

Yala National Park is made up of spellbinding vistas and a true abundance of Sri Lankan wildlife. It has the highest density of leopards in the world, so chances of seeing them are very high.

Although leopards are the main attraction here, they are followed closely by elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. The park is divided into five blocks; some of which were zoned to hunters until Yala became a national park in 1938. Ensure you make time to visit the very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park for insightful displays about the area.

1. Sigiriya Rock Fort [SEE MAP]

Sigiriya Rock Fort is utterly impressive. The rock walls rise up 200 meters from the ground, only to give way to a flat plateau at their summit. There are steep stairwells to reach the top and many frescos to marvel at on the way up. At the top, you can find the remains of an ancient civilization, including relics of a palace and monastery.

It would have taken true engineering ingenuity to build a structure at this height so many centuries ago. Around the rock fort are many important caves and gardens; impressively, they are some of the first landscaped gardens in the world.

Sri Lanka may only be small, but thanks to its jungle-clad mountains, golden sandy beaches , abundant wildlife in their natural habitats, and spice-laden cuisines, the island nation ensures visitors are never bored.

From remarkable train rides and fine dining across the capital Colombo to world-class surfing and chic beachside cafes in the south of the country, here are 18 of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.

1. Watch sunrise over Little Adam’s Peak 

Not to be confused with Adam’s Peak, the sacred mountain near Hatton that involves an arduous 5000-step climb, Little Adam’s Peak is a popular, easy-to-do hike for those visiting the tourist hub of Ella . Start your one-hour hike early in the morning when it’s dark outside so you don't miss the sunrise from the summit. Hikers wanting more can then trek Ella Rock and follow a path leading to Nine Arch Bridge.  

Ella itself is a laid-back place. Many stay outside the town, but travelers should immerse themselves in the cafe scene at Cafe Chill . Adventure buffs can go ziplining. While Ella deserves the hype, there are other quaint mountain towns that are also worth visiting: Ohiya, Idalgashinna, Haputale, and Wellawaya. 

2. Taste the world's best cinnamon on Ganduwa Island

Southern Sri Lanka produces some of the world's best cinnamon, a lighter, more sweeter variety than is found in Indonesia and Vietnam. Travelers can learn about the highly prized Ceylon cinnamon by visiting Ganduwa Island on Koggala Lake , just south of Galle , by boat.

Generational peelers spend their days here skillfully shaving thin layers of the tree’s inner bark to create quills of cinnamon. You can buy them alongside small packets of cinnamon powder and cinnamon oil at a cost of about US$2. The boat then takes passengers to some of the other islands. Grab a glass of fresh kirala (mangrove apple) juice from a local vendor on the jetty as you leave.

3. Bird-watch in Bundala National Park

Home to nearly 200 species of native and migratory birds, Bundala National Park is a Ramsar-recognized wetland in the south of the country. Bird-watching tours start at 6am and run for 3–4 hours as the park comes alive with brahminy kites, hundreds of storks, families of whistling wild ducks, Asian green bee-eaters, dancing peacocks, and resting crocodiles. Come the afternoon, wild Asian elephants, spotted deer and wild boar roam amongst the Weera, Neem and Palu trees.

Planning tip:  For the best chance of spotting wildlife, arrange a 4WD safari with a tour operator. Look for offices just outside the park in Bundala Junction.

4. Climb Pidurangala to see the sunrise over the jungle

No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without visiting the Sigiriya , a massive rock fortress with ruins of an ancient palace, water gardens, and frescos near the giant rock Pidurangala . Early birds should buckle up their hiking shoes and climb up Pidurangala at 5am for sunrise, but if you are not a morning person, head here for sunset before the ticket office closes at 6pm.

Planning tip:  The entrance fee is US$30 for this 45-minute climb. The summit overlooks the majestic lion-shaped Sigiriya rock surrounded by tropical jungles and artificial lakes. To reach the top you’ll pass through a Buddhist temple, so carry a shawl or a sarong to cover up.

5. Go kitesurfing on the remote Kalpitiya Peninsula

With numerous flatwater lagoons and plenty of steady wind, Sri Lanka’s northwestern coast offers some of the best kitesurfing in the world. A 3.5-hour drive north of Colombo is the lesser-explored Kalpitiya Peninsula, which is still relatively new to many overseas tourists. The region is home to sandy beaches and small fishing hamlets with droves of wild donkeys strolling around large grasslands.

Stop in Kappalady on the Indian Ocean for kitesurfing lessons with local instructors at Kite Center Sri Lanka . The kite school can arrange kitesurfing safaris (tours) to nearby spots such as Donkey Point, Dutch Bay and Vella Island for more experienced kiteboarders. Other activities in Kappalady include exploring the lagoons by kayak and ethical dolphin-watching tours where large pods of spinner dolphins swim in their hundreds. Good operators will only charter small boats, keep their distance from the pods, and avoid feeding the animals. There are also a few accommodation options by the beach in Kappalady.

6. Camp in the Haputale mountains

An hour by bus from Ella are the misty mountains of Haputale , a region dotted with tea plantations and icy-cold streams. Stay in a local family-run campsite, such as the Eco Lodge Haputale  run by the Dias family. After a few cups of sugary milk tea at their home, they will walk you through a tea garden to their campground made up of several tents with a small kitchen and a dining area that opens up to the Haputale mountains. Wake up to the sound of birdsong and enjoy the sunrise – it’s the highlight of a stay here.

7. Take a train ride from Colombo 

When it comes to experiences in Sri Lanka, taking a train journey is a must . For mountain views coupled with tea gardens, British colonial-era railway stations, and gushing water bodies, take the Colombo to Ella train journey, which also passes through the Instagram-famous Nine Arch Bridge. There are several trains that pass through the route, but since it’s quite popular among travelers, make sure you reserve your tickets beforehand.

But don't just stop there. Hop on a coastal train heading south towards Galle from Colombo for the views of the Indian Ocean and swaying palms. Next, board a train riding up north to Jaffna  – you will notice changing landscapes as you go past Anuradhapura when green rice fields and coconut trees are replaced by palmyra palms, shrubs, and barren soil. 

Planning tip:  Other than local families, travelers, and daily commuters, you'll find plenty of vendors on the trains selling cups of tea, instant coffee, chili-sprinkled fresh fruits, roasted peanuts, yogurt, and even mobile top-up cards. 

8. Feast on Sri Lankan crabs

Sri Lankan crabs sell fast in Singapore’s fine-dining restaurants, and rarely make it to the menu back home. But that’s starting to change: for an upmarket taster in Colombo, head to the Ministry of Crab inside the Dutch Hospital Complex . For something more local, you can’t beat the Mayura Hotel in Pettah Market . 

Planning tip:  If you’re in the north of the country, you must try the Jaffna crab curry from Cosy Restaurant near the Jaffna Railway Station, which comes with a punchy, spicy kick.

9. Look for the elusive Sri Lankan leopard at Wilpattu National Park

Most visitors to Yala National Park want to see the endangered Sri Lankan leopard. However, overcrowding is common and safari 4WDs have been known to scare the animals away.

For a better and more conscientious safari experience, head to Wilpattu National Park in the northwest of the island and book with a responsible operator like Leopard Trails . Their guides don't chase after possible sightings, but they do turn off their vehicle engines near animals. They will also whisper near any sighting so as not to disturb the animals. As well as leopards, the park is also home to Asian elephants, sloth bears, and bark deer all in their natural habitats.

Alternatively, Kumana National Park , in the eastern part of Yala, is a good place for bird-watchers. If luck prevails, you may just come across a leopard napping on a rugged boulder too.

10. Witness the largest wild Asian elephant gathering in the world

Sri Lanka is home to an estimated 4000 wild Asian elephants, best seen in their natural habitats, the country’s national parks . During the dry months from July to September, the large reservoirs in Kaudulla and Minneriya National Parks draw herds of wild Asian elephants where they graze on grass, bathe and play together. Hot days see elephants sheltering in the nearby jungles, but in the afternoon, around 4pm, they slowly emerge. This is your chance to see hundreds of the creatures hanging out by the lakes, the largest gathering of wild elephants in the world.

Planning tip:  Skip places where elephants are held in captivity – except for the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe . Run by the government wildlife department, with support from the Born Free Foundation , this halfway house takes in abandoned and injured elephant calves and returns them to the wild once they have recuperated. 

11. Eat traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry in Unawatuna

Sri Lankans enjoy curry and rice for at least one meal a day – sometimes for all three – and while there are plenty of great places to try the national dish, Mettha's Home Cooked Meals, sandwiched between the cafes and souvenir shops of Unawatuna, in the south of Sri Lanka is among the best. The Vedda are the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. Originally forest-dwellers, their numbers have dwindled over the years due to migration, habitat loss, and assimilation into the nation's dominant Sinhala-Buddhist culture. Now scattered across the island in small numbers, some Vedda families still preserve their native language, cuisines and rituals in places like Dambana, an indigenous village and museum in the southern part of Maduru Oya National Park.

Planning tip:  Don’t get deceived by any Pilawoos or Hotel de Plaza, though – there are numerous holes-in-the-wall with the same name – the originals are on Galle Road in Colombo 03. 14. Explore the quirky lanes of Galle Fort

Galle Fort is an eccentric mix of Portuguese, Dutch and British architectural influences surrounded by spas, luxury hotels, souvenir shops, ice cream parlors and gem boutiques. 16. Cycle through the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa

Following the fall of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa became the second capital of Sri Lanka from 1070 to 1232, and the ruins of this ancient city are now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Occasional visitors include wild peacocks trying to charm their peahens. 

18. Snack on hoppers

If there’s one thing to try before you leave Sri Lanka, it’s hoppers ( aappa in Sinhala; appam in Tamil), bowl-like pancakes made from rice flour batter. With crispy edges and fluffy centers, plain hoppers are eaten with curries or a spicy sambal (chili paste) called lunu miris made with onions and dried red chili. 

Walk into a street joint in the evenings and you’ll often find plain hoppers topped with an egg. If you are in Colombo, head to Palmyrah Restaurant  in Renuka Hotel for some Sri Lankan fine dining; the dinner menu includes both savory and sweet hoppers with milk or jaggery. Or, if you don’t mind long lines, try some hoppers from Aunty Radhika in the Wellawatta neighborhood. Walk past the bank on WA Silva Mawatha to find this small, but popular, hopper stall.

Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful places that I have visited. From its white, pristine beaches to the lush, verdant rainforests; Sri Lanka is truly stunner.

The town of Kandy would have to be one of the most scenic and atmospheric places in Sri Lanka. The man-made lake here covered in secrecy by the surrounding hillsides is almost magical. Kandy is also the cultural centre for the country with many festivals to enjoy while either sitting by the lake and soaking in the tranquility or exploring some of the world’s most famous Buddhist temples. Taking some time to just soak in the atmosphere, we wandered lakeside, watching birds at play and the beautiful sky reflecting on the calm water.

North of Bentota, on the road towards Colombo is the tiny seaside town of Kalutara. Historically, it held importance as a trading route for the Dutch, Portuguese and British. In the present day, Kalutara is a place to stop, relax and refresh staring out to the sparkling ocean, before heading into the hustle and bustle of Colombo. For me, seeing a variety of local crafts on the streets is a memory that I treasure. With handmade baskets produced from local materials, you can take away a little piece of this oasis to remind you of it later on.

Nuwara Eliya

Just south of Kandy is the charming village of Nuwara Eliya, with the quaint feel of the English countryside; it is almost impossible to believe that you are in Sri Lanka. With its whimsical churches, Tudor-style houses and the scent of freshly cut tea filling the air, Nuwara Eliya transported us to England at the turn of the 19 th century. After a morning walk we drove around the surrounding area, through what seemed like a maze of perfectly manicured tea shrubs that blanketed the hillside in brilliant hues of emerald. Nuwara Eliya felt like a small slice of British colonial heritage that I had only read about over the years.

Before heading onto our next stop, we took a short break in  Colombo . Staying at the historic Galle Face Hotel we ended the day by watching the sunset over the ocean and listening to the sound of waves crashing against the shore. This was nothing short of pure bliss.

Heading west, we followed our nose to the sea, landing in the airy town of Bentota. Home to sandy beaches and a brilliant azure sea that stretches out to the ocean, I felt relaxed as soon as the scent of sea salt hit my nostrils. Although it was hard to tear myself away from the fresh sea breeze, I headed inland to see the Brief Gardens. A tangled jungle, these gardens are like an illusion, with inviting nooks and a sparkling pond. The house is almost invisible, concealed behind hedges and thick bushes of flowers, but inside it contains wonderful works of art by local and international artists.
