The Dogs of Star Trek

I thought it would be fun to do a retrospective of the most memorable dogs to appear in the various Star Trek series. From beloved companions of captains and Klingon warriors, to wild alien creatures, and sly shape-shifters, there are some great moments featuring dogs (and sometimes very fictional “dogs”) in each series.

star trek enterprise dog name

Star Trek: The Original Series Episode 1.5 “ The Enemy Within ” 1966

Something goes horribly awry with the ship’s transporter, causing it to beam back two versions of each life form: one good and one evil. This is probably the most memorable use of a dog on a Star Trek episode. The dog actor in this episode portrays an “alien animal specimen,” and ultimately, embodies the epitome of Star Trek camp.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode 6.13 “ Aquiel “  1993

This episode is burned into my memory as containing the one and only tv moment to deeply traumatize my little sister. In this episode, ship engineer Geordi grows close to the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Spoiler: it turns out, her dog is host to a body-snatching alien organism, who is the true killer. Geordi witnesses the dog morph into the alien’s natural blob-like state, which then proceeds to attack him. I guess the idea of a cute dog suddenly morphing into a murderous blob really hit a nerve with my then 6-year-old sister. The dog in this episode was played by Friday, a terrier mix.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Movie “ Generations”  1994

In the Star Trek movie “ Generations ,” Captain Kirk is transported into the “Nexus,” which is an energy ribbon that allows those who enter it to transcend time. Kirk is able to re-visit loved ones from his past, including his wife, his children, and his beloved great dane  Butler . During the filming of the movie William Shatner apparently requested that Kirk’s dog be called Butler, because he had recently lost his own dog of that name. Spoiler: The scene with Kirk and Butler occurs shortly before his death.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Episode 4.08 “ Little Green Men” 1995

In this episode, Odo, a changeling and the security chief of Deep Space Nine, spies on questionable Ferengi business meetings multiple times by taking the form of a German Shepard.

star trek enterprise dog name

Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise Multiple Episodes 1995-2005

On Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001), Captain Janeway frequently made references to her dog Mollie, who was an Irish Setter. On Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005), Captain Jonathan Archer’s Beagle  Porthos  makes many appearances. Many other canine companions are also mentioned throughout Enterprise .

Klingon Targs Multiple Episodes, Multiple Series  1987-2001

And finally, although they are not technically dogs , I can’t omit the Klingon dog-like Targs. Although Targs are also hunted by Klingons for sport and food, many prominent Klingons have fond memories of these boar-like beasts as highly valued pets and companions. General Martok once said his Targ was “a filthy, mangy beast, but in his bony breast beat the heart of a warrior.” Worf (below) also mentioned having had a Targ as a child.

…Do you have memories of the dogs of  Star Trek ? Although these moments were few and far between, they stand out in my memory. And, as a side note, I definitely think of myself and Miles as being akin to Klingon and Targ.

I LOVE THIS POST SO MUCH!!! Thank you Captain Miles and Lieutenant Commander Emma!

' src=

In one episode of Star Trek Voyager, an alien scientist actually owned a dog.

An alien also owned a dog on Risa in Star Trek Enterprise.

Why are dogs more widespread than humans?

' src=

Because they’re good dogs, Amoraq.

' src=

There are puppies…….Q tries to seduce Janeway with puppies in an STV episode; and in STTNG there is a scene with Troi’s son Alexander playing with puppies, Golden Retrievers.

' src=

STV episode 11, season 3, “The Q and the Grey”

I am watching right now and one of the items Q gifts Janeway when trying to woo her is a puppy. Not sure if it’s an Irish Setter like her Mollie is back in the Alpha Quadrant or a dark red golden, but the poor pup – like Janeway – wants nothing to do with Q either!

' src=

Y’all forgot Voyager “The Q and the Grey” (Irish setter puppy)

History [ ]

He was one of four male puppies in his litter. He and his brothers Athos , Aramis , and D'Artagnan were named after the four central characters of the Alexandre Dumas novel " The Three Musketeers ". Rebecca 's mother had raised the pups and gave Archer Porthos. ( ENT episode : " A Night in Sickbay ", ENT novelization : The Expanse )

Porthos was extremely fond of cheese and Archer often obliged him. However, ingesting cheese occasionally caused him gastrointestinal distress. ( ENT episodes : " Fight or Flight ", " Dear Doctor ")

In 2151 , he became the first inhabitant of Earth to set foot on a planet later named after his master: Archer IV . He immediately ran into the forest and proceeded to urinate. Commander Charles Tucker III quipped that he was really was going "where no dog has gone before". ( ENT episode : " Strange New World ")

Later that year , Doctor Phlox provided Subcommander T'Pol with a numbing agent to protect her from the worst of Porthos' smell. However, she still found his smell offensive, particularly after Captain Archer had fed him cheese as it caused him to flatulate. ( ENT episode : " The Andorian Incident ", ENT - The Romulan War novel : To Brave the Storm )

While the crew of Enterprise were incapacitated by the Ferengi marauders Ulis , Krem , Muk , and Grish , Porthos remained conscious, presumably due to his non-humanoid physiology. Grish attempted to use his universal translator to communicate with Porthos but Muk soon chastised him for not realizing that he was a "lower lifeform." Muk commented that he would likely fetch several bars of latinum at the Malurzian Zoo and placed him in a cargo container . After regaining control of Enterprise , Archer retrieved his pet, who appeared very happy to be reunited with his master. ( ENT episode : " Acquisition ")

Porthos was briefly sent back in time to the year 2120 by Timot Danlen in order to thwart the Suliban Cabal 's attempt to kill Archer as a child. Initially mistaken by the younger Archer for his parents' dog, Maska , Porthos rescued Archer from the Nacaijin Gorge where he had been left to drown by a Suliban agent. In turn, Porthos was saved from falling through the ice by the younger Archer before being promptly returned to his own time when his task was achieved. The elder Archer was informed by Danlen that an Enterprise crew member had "volunteered" to travel back in time to save him, but only realized their identity when he next saw Porthos and remembered the incident. ( ENT - Waypoint comic : " The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty ")

In 2152 , Porthos was infected with a deadly pathogen while accompanying Archer, T'Pol and Ensign Hoshi Sato on an away mission to the Kreetassan homeworld. Phlox was forced to operate, replacing his pituitary gland with that of a Calrissian chameleon which he had in storage. He made a full recovery. Archer was later forced to carry out an elaborate ceremony of apology as, during the mission, Porthos had also urinated on a sacred tree. ( ENT episode : " A Night in Sickbay ")

Porthos was aboard Enterprise for a full decade, remaining at his master's side throughout the Xindi Crisis , the Earth-Romulan War and until the ship was decommissioned in 2161 . ( ENT episodes : " The Xindi ", " Zero Hour ", ENT - The Romulan War novels : Beneath the Raptor's Wing , To Brave the Storm , ENT episode : " These Are the Voyages... ")

When Archer was promoted to admiral later that year, Porthos accompanied him to Starfleet Headquarters . He and Archer often visited Enterprise , which had become a museum piece in the Smithsonian Institution 's orbital annex. By May 2163 , Archer had begun to notice that Porthos had slowed down considerably due to his advanced age for a beagle. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : A Choice of Futures )

In early 2166 , Porthos was in poor health. By then, he did not have the energy to get up and greet Archer when he returned to the home Archer shared with Danica Erickson . By March of that year, it was becoming obvious that Porthos was dying. On March 18, the vet finally told Dani that it was time for Porthos to move on. Dani relayed that to Archer, who was preparing for a Federation Council debate with Thy'lek Shran over the proposed non-interference directive. Learning that Porthos was dying, Shran told Archer to forget the debate and to go be with Porthos. Porthos passed away a short time later with Archer by his side. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : Patterns of Interference )

Appendices [ ]

Porthos.

Appearances [ ]

In the film Star Trek Montgomery Scott refers to having lost "Admiral Archer's beagle" in a transporter accident - a reference to Jonathan Archer and Porthos, though it is not clear if either are the original characters (still alive a century after their appearances in Enterprise ) or their descendants. When the film's writer, Roberto Orci , was asked "is the beagle mentioned Porthos? Has veterinary science advanced so much? (Please say yes!)" he responded with an enthusiastic (and likely jovial) "YES!". [1]

Today, we share Star Trek 101 's file on Porthos, Enterprise 's best Good Boy.

Cpt. Archer's Dog Porthos

Porthos is Captain Archer’s pet beagle. The dog is named after a character in the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas (his litter-mates were named for the two other musketeers). The original Porthos loved wine, women and song; this Porthos seems to love only cheese — but then, he is a dog.

Porthos was a male beagle, the pet dog of Jonathan Archer . Archer took Porthos with him when he took command of the United Earth Starfleet starship Enterprise (NX-01) in 2151. The Best ’Star Trek’ Dog Names For Your New Friend On The Furry Frontier

By Brian Sweeney

Looking for a Star Trek -inspired name for your dog? You’re not alone, Trek fan!

With the full-length trailer for the upcoming Star Trek: Picard recently revealed and the continued teasing that Quentin Tarantino may make the next Star Trek movie, Trekkers–or Trekkies, whichever you identify as–are at a fever pitch. And dog lovers are pretty excited, too!

The official poster for Star Trek: Picard shows the former Enterprise captain standing in his vineyard next to a Pit Bull type dog. Yes, Picard seemingly has a very good boy. The pup even has a Starfleet insignia-shaped tag on his collar that reads “No. 1.” Fans will remember that this is what Picard called his first officer, William T. Riker.

Seeing as Patrick Stewart, who plays Picard, is a known dog lover, it’s no surprise that he’ll share the screen with a special pooch! While we wait to learn what Picard named this good boy, it’s a great time to think of some names that you can give to your new best friend.

So let’s boldly go into the best Star Trek dog names in the universe! And I’ve even tossed in some Trek Trivia for the fans out there!

The Best Dog Names Inspired By Star Trek

LAS VEGAS - AUGUST 17: Pat Krob (L) and her husband Ken Krob of California hold their poodles named "Lt. Tasha Yar" (L) and "Mr. Data" as they are interviewed by G4TV correspondent William O'Neal of California at the fifth annual official Star Trek convention at the Las Vegas Hilton August 17, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Your dog should sport a name that supports their continuing mission–to explore strange new smells and to seek out new fire hydrants and new dog parks!

Note: In my personal opinion, a very important way to judge a dog’s name is to think about what it would sound like being yelled across a field: “Come here, [DOG NAME]!” Try it out before you commit to it and set course. Here are some Star Trek dog names that might fit your pooch.

Give your commanding canine the name that will make all other dogs give respect and fall in line with the name of the legendary captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D.

  • Trek Trivia: Jean-Luc Picard was raised in LaBarre, France.

Name your pup after the Son of Mogh and famed Chief Security Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D.

  • Trek Trivia: Worf was a regular in seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and four seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as appearing in four movies, holding the record of most appearances in Star Trek.

The name of the android Lieutenant Commander Data is short and snappy, perfect for a pet name.

  • Trek Trivia: Another actor considered for the part of Data was Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund.
View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lizzy H (@lizzyandmeeko) on Aug 27, 2018 at 5:49pm PDT
  • Trek Trivia: The writers also considered the name “Aloysius” for O’Brien, which is not as good a name for a dog.

If you name your dog after Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, the systems diagnostic engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, you could spell it “Barklay,” which is very appropriate.

  • Trek Trivia: Barclay was portrayed by Dwight Schultz who is most famous for his role as Captain H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock on The A-Team.

This is the name of Captain Picard’s lionfish kept in a spherical saltwater aquarium in his ready room aboard the USS Enterprise-D for the duration of the ship’s existence.

  • Trek Trivia: Livingston is said by the producers to have probably perished in the crash of the Enterprise in the movie Star Trek Generations.

Consider naming your dog after the mysterious Enterprise bartender played by Whoopi Goldberg.

  • Trek Trivia: The character of Guinan was created especially for Goldberg, who is a life-long Star Trek fan. She recalls that when she was nine years-old, after seeing Nichelle Nichols’ character, Lt. Uhura, on the Original Series, she went running through her house shouting “Come here, mom, everybody, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!”

Spot is the name of Commander Data’s cat, who lived with him while he served aboard the USS Enterprise-D and -E. She had a litter of kittens with one of the other cats on the Enterprise-D.

  • Trek Trivia: Data once wrote a poem about Spot, entitled “Ode to Spot.”

Maybe you can name your pooch after the legendary Enterprise captain James T. Kirk–a name for a dog who is both thoughtful and action-oriented.

  • Trek Trivia: James Kirk was born in Riverside, Iowa in the year 2223.
View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Duke & Duchess (@duchduke) on May 9, 2019 at 2:25pm PDT
  • Trek Trivia: in 1967, TV Guide featured an article titled “Mr. Spock Is Dreamy!” all about the sex appeal of Mr. Spock.

The Enterprise’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard H. McCoy could provide your dog with a great name. Kirk’s nickname for McCoy is “Bones,” making it very appropriate for your puppy.

  • Trek Trivia: DeForest Kelley was originally offered the role of Spock, but turned it down.

This is the middle name of Captain James T. Kirk, but you knew that, of course!

  • Trek Trivia: While The initial “T.” was given as Captain Kirk’s middle name, it wasn’t until the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture that the name Tiberius was used.

The Enterprise’s Russian ensign Pavel Chekov might inspire a “wery” good name for your pooch!

  • Trek Trivia: Ensign Chekov’s character was added in the second season in response to the popularity of The Monkees. Actor Walter Koenig had to wear a shaggy wig in his first few episodes to look more like The Monkees’ Davy Jones.

The Enterprise’s Chief Engineer, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott might inspire a name for a brainy pup or a Scottish Terrier !

  • Trek Trivia:  The exact line “Beam me up, Scotty” was never said in any episode of the Original Series nor any of the movies.
View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Tara Fields (@themistresst) on Oct 11, 2018 at 6:51am PDT
  • Trek Trivia: In the book Star Trek Cats by illustrator Jenny Parks, Sulu is depicted as a Japanese Bobtail cat.

This is the last name of the Captain Kirk actor, himself, the great William Shatner, obviously. It’s a name that commands respect and awe, perfect for your canine companion.

  • Trek Trivia: William Shatner sold a kidney stone he passed for $75,000 in 2006.

Roddenberry

This is the name that started it all– Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Maybe you can shorten it to Roddy for your pup.

  • Trek Trivia: In 1985, Gene Roddenberry became the first TV writer with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

If you want to go a little more unique and insider with your dog’s name, consider the name of Spock’s father, Sarek.

  • Trek Trivia: The actor Mark Lenard, who played Sarek, is the only actor to have played a Vulcan, Romulan, and Klingon in the Original Series.

If you want a hip dog name that doesn’t necessarily announce your Star Trek fandom, consider the name of Lieutenant Kevin Riley.

  • Trek Trivia: Kevin Riley lived on the Taurus IV Colony in 2246.

This was the name of Mr. Spock’s childhood pet sehlat on Vulcan.

  • Trek Trivia: Sehlats are popular pets among the children of Vulcan, despite them being very aggressive and having six-inch fangs.

This is the name of the commander of the starship Fesarius from the episode “The Corbomite Maneuver.”

  • Trek Trivia: Seven year-old Clint Howard portrayed the character Balok.

If your dog is an “alpha,” maybe you should name them after the mysterious creature Canis Alfa from the episode “The Enemy Within.”

  • Trek Trivia: The Canis Alfa is exactly what it looks like: a little dog with a horn and antennae stuck to it.
View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jenny The Weirdo (@punkrawkward) on Sep 15, 2018 at 11:40am PDT
  • Trek Trivia: Trelane’s costume was later reused on an episode of Gilligan’s Island and an episode of The Monkees.

Maybe your dog would appreciate the shortest name on the list and the name of the very first Klingon to appear on Star Trek in the episode “Errand Of Mercy.”

  • Trek Trivia: The character of Kor returned in both an episode of The Animated Series and an episode of Deep Space Nine.

The name of the Klingon character from the episode “Day Of The Dove” might be perfect if you have a sibling dog named Kor.

  • Trek Trivia: Matt Groening named The Simpsons’ alien Kang after this character.

If the other “K” names on the list don’t suit your pup, consider the moniker of the character Kodos The Executioner from the episode “The Conscience Of The King.”

  • Trek Trivia: Matt Groening named The Simpsons’ alien Kodos after this character.

If you’d like another name that keeps your Star Trek fandom on the down low, you might want to choose the name of Captain Kathryn Janeway’s Irish Setter back on Earth.

  • Trek Trivia: Mollie was left on Earth with Janeway’s fiancé, Mark Johnson, when Janeway and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager were swept 70,000 light years away into the Delta Quadrant.

Updated 04-13-2023

You don't need to be a Trekkie to love the names that have come from the long standing Star Trek Series that included both movies and iconic television series.

Both movies and TV series have created a legacy that spans generations encouraging viewers to visualize a life  where no man has gone before.

  • Trivia According to a DVD interview, Vaughn Armstrong was called shortly before shooting and told he was needed to fill the role of the Klingon Commander. The most challenging aspect of this sudden call, in his opinion, was having to deliver the Klingon language so precisely so as to not upset established Klingon language guidelines.

Star Trek Dog Names

Star Trek is a cult phenomenon that has been around for decades and doesn’t show any signs of slowing. The show started in 1966 with Star Trek: The Original Series famously starring William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Since then, Star Trek has spawned a number of spin-off shows and movies, including the recent reboot by J.J. Abrams.

Some people are unabashed fans, attending conferences and affectionately calling themselves Trekkies. Others own memorabilia and can quote lines off the cuff. And for many, the series is near and dear to their heart.

The Dog was a genetically-engineered lifeform created by Ensign D'Vana Tendi in 2380 , during her free time aboard the USS Cerritos . This was first spurred on by personnel in the Medical division being encouraged to develop side projects.

Tendi created The Dog from inert carbon , hand-edited all six billion sequences that were encoded in her DNA , which included the reorganization of her mitochondria , and her protein bonds successfully accepted the Cas9 snipping without any cellular degradation . The end result made her 5% faster and 6% smarter than a typical dog .

Although she was modeled after a domestic dog from Earth , The Dog had abilities beyond those of normal canines , including the ability to shape-shift , walk on walls, turn her eyes into bat-winged creatures that could fly out of her mouth , speak in a language recognizable by the universal translator , hover , and spit lightning . Tendi deliberately gave The Dog these features, as her homeworld of Orion did not have dogs, and Tendi mistakenly believed these were attributes of "normal" dogs.

As a " freak " that defied categorization, Doctor T'Ana referred to The Dog as " Mr. Whatever The Hell That Thing Is". The Dog was taken by Division 14 to Endicronimas V , where she could be cared for by the staff of the medical spa known as The Farm . ( LD : " Much Ado About Boimler ")

Later, Tendi retold the story of creating The Dog to Ensign Sam Rutherford after the loss of his cybernetic implant caused him to experience memory loss . ( LD : " No Small Parts ")

Star Trek: Enterprise: 3 bizarre, never developed Porthos-centric episodes

By rachel carrington | aug 27, 2020.

LAS VEGAS, NV - AUGUST 06: Actor Scott Bakula speaks during the 15th annual official Star Trek convention at the Rio Hotel & Casino on August 6, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Gabe Ginsberg/Getty Images)

Star Trek: Enterprise has an extremely dedicated fan base that includes all characters.

Star Trek: Enterprise was the first of the Star Trek franchise shows that gave the captain a devoted pet. Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) had the lovable beagle Porthos for all four seasons of the show , and the fans fell in love with the dog. To this day, A Night in Sick Bay remains one of my most favorite episodes of the show. That said, though, Porthos was best playing what he was supposed to play—a dog. That didn’t stop writers from pitching other story lines that would have taken Porthos and fans out of our comfort zones. Thankfully, these stories never came to fruition.

Porthos becomes intelligent

Dogs are generally intelligent animals, but this pitch, though not fully explored, seemed to indicate Porthos would exceed the normal levels of intelligence afforded to animals. Perhaps the writers thought he should be able to better communicate with Captain Archer . And speaking of communicating…

Porthos and the canine alien

Another pitch that didn’t make the cut involved a canine alien that, due to obvious reasons, only Porthos could communicate with. One can only imagine how this episode would have unfolded, possibly with Hoshi trying to tune the universal translator to a canine frequency. Fortunately, this idea was scrapped, and the actors didn’t have to pretend not to giggle their way through their lines.

Porthos takes command of Enterprise

Can you imagine the beagle in Captain Archer’s chair while barking out “tactical alert?” How this episode would even have played out is both amusing and disturbing to consider. Had the writers intended to put Captain Archer’s consciousness in Porthos’ body or simply have the dog transform into a being capable of communication with humans? The idea is still baffling.

According to Andre Bormanis, a writer and producer on Star Trek: Enterprise , part of the reasoning behind these stories not seeing the light of day is that producers didn’t want Porthos “stealing the show.”  I can certainly understand why fans would get that impression. As beloved as Porthos was, he played the best role he could play on the series.

Star Trek: The Origin of the Enterprise's Name Is Absolutely Wild

The USS Enterprise has been a part of Star Trek for over half a century, but the iconic ship almost had a different name.

Star Trek has always been successful at rewarding fans with consistent comforts they’ve come to identify with the brand. Decade after decade, Star Trek has kept essential parts of its universe consistent, including what things are called. But the origin story of where the Enterprise got its name and why Star Trek keeps using it is steeped in a proud tradition, legacy and symbolism. So, it is no accident that one of the most famous fictional starships is just as hallowed as its many real predecessors -- but it almost didn’t happen at all.

In Star Trek lore the USS Enterprise is a name most associated with Captain  Kirk  and  Picard . But the name has been a constant throughout the more than half-century-old brand. In the Star Trek universe, all major flagships have been called Enterprise, including the first pre-Starfleet vessel. More recently, the Star Trek: Enterprise  put the ship's name right in its title.

Enterprise 's opening features real footage of NASA’s Enterprise space shuttle. It was the first space vehicle of its kind (although it never flew to space). In 1976, the shuttle earned its name because the " hundreds of thousands " of letters the U.S. government said represented millions of passionate Star Trek fans. The shuttle was originally going to be called Constitution, but President Gerald Ford directed NASA to make the change due to the huge public wave of support. However, the name was familiar to the government. Enterprise has a long tradition in U.S. military history, dating back to confederation.

In 1775, a group of revolutionary forces led by Benedict Arnold raided a British shipyard in Quebec and stole a sloop-of-war, Liberty, and renamed it, Enterprise. Since then, the name has adorned significant American ships of war for nearly 250 years. Something military veterans like Star Trek ’s creator Gene Roddenberry would surely know.

Roddenberry served his country in the pacific theater during World War II. In that time, two very prominent American aircraft carriers, the U.S.S. Enterprise & U.S.S. Yorkton (which tragically sunk), earned distinguished places in history. Roddenberry initially wanted to call his Star Trek starship the S.S. Yorktown. But a big pop culture influence changed his plans and, ultimately, influenced history for generations.

During the mid-’60s when Star Trek was being created, the U.S. Navy had recently unveiled its first-ever nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Enterprise, which attracted lots of public and media attention. Roddenberry was also proud of its predecessors' legacy and wanted to use the name. Eventually, the Yorkton became the Enterprise. In a fourth-wall head-spinner, the actual carrier would later have its own cross-over into the Star Trek universe.

In 1989’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , members of Kirk’s fictional USS Enterprise starship crew travel back in time to the 1980s. While there, they sneak aboard the real USS Enterprise aircraft carrier to steal energy from its nuclear reactor to help get them home. It's an ironic twist considering the ship's atomic power was the very thing that helped name the first fictional Star Trek  Enterprise.

In real life, the Enterprise name made another re-emergence in the U.S. Naval fleet, with a brand-new class of aircraft carriers expected to begin operations in 2028. As for Star Trek 's fictional universe, the name Enterprise remains as integral to its future as it does to its past.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Resurfaces Decades After It Went Missing

The model used in the original series’ opening credits is now back with Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the show’s creator

First ever model

Nearly 50 years after it went missing, the original model of the  USS Starship Enterprise from the hit show “ Star Trek ” is finally voyaging home. The 33-inch model—the same one that appears in the opening credits of the original series—is now back with Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the show’s creator.

“After five decades, I’m thrilled that someone happened upon this historic model of the USS Enterprise ,” says Roddenberry, who goes by “Rod,” in a Heritage Auctions statement . “I remember how it used to adorn my dad’s desk.”

The tiny model has been missing since Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry (who died in 1991), lent it to the makers of 1979’s  Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the first Star Trek feature film. Unfortunately, he never got it back. What happened to it at that point is unknown.

close up of the Enterprise

Last fall, the spaceship popped up on  eBay —with a starting bid of $1,000. The listing was titled “Rare Custom Star Trek USS Enterprise Spaceship by Richard Datin .” Datin, a model maker from the Howard Anderson special-effects company, built the original model out of solid wood. The  New York Times ’ Emily Schmall reports that the seller came across the item after discovering it in a storage unit. After receiving many inquiries about the item, the seller contacted Heritage Auctions.

“Once our team of experts concluded it was the real thing, we contacted Rod because we wanted to get the model back to where it belonged,” says Joe Maddalena, executive vice president at Heritage Auctions, in the statement. “We’re thrilled the Enterprise is finally in dry dock.”

The ship’s whereabouts after its disappearance remain a mystery; unfortunately, the missing years aren’t described in a captain’s log. The younger Roddenberry says there had even been rumors that he’d thrown it into a pool as a boy, per Jamie Stengle of the Associated Press (AP).

While the model would “easily” sell for over $1 million at auction, it’s a “priceless” piece of television history, Maddalena tells the AP.

Since Star Trek ’s debut in 1966, the Enterprise has become an instantly recognizable image—and a pioneering design that inspired many other fictional spacecraft.

“We didn’t want the Enterprise to look like something currently planned for our space program,” said Walter Jefferies, the Star Trek art director who designed the fictional craft, in the 1968 book The Making of Star Trek , per the auction house. “We knew that by the time the show got on the air, this type of thing would be old hat. We had to go further than even the most advanced space scientists were thinking.”

Ariel view of the Enterprise Model

The younger Roddenberry rounded up a group of Star Trek production veterans to help authenticate and restore the model. One of them was Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who worked on the 2016 restoration of an 11-foot model of the Enterprise for the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum . Kerr still had old photos of the model sitting on the elder Roddenberry’s desk.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Roddenberry tells the Times . “It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one.’”

While other models of the Enterprise exist, the newly discovered ship is the original. Looking ahead, Roddenberry wants to ensure that this one-of-a-kind artifact is accessible to the public.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” he tells the AP. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it, and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

Lost Original USS Enterprise Model From ‘Star Trek’ Returned To Gene Roddenberry’s Son

We have a nice update on a story from late last year about what appeared to be the original model for the USS Enterprise showing up in an online auction after being lost for decades. That model has now been authenticated and returned to the Roddenberry family.

Star Trek mystery solved

In 1977, the first shooting model of the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series went missing. The 3-foot model used for the first Star Trek pilot (and for the credits used for the entire series) had been given to Roddenberry after it was replaced by an 11-foot model. That larger model is in the Smithsonian, but the 3-foot model sat on Roddenberry’s desk until it went missing after being loaned to an effects house during the making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

The model appeared to have gone up for auction on eBay late last year, but was quickly taken down. At that time Eugene Roddenberry Jr. was working to get the model authenticated and returned to the family. And that has now happened.

The model’s return was facilitated by Heritage Auctions. Last fall, an individual discovered the long-lost model and brought it to Heritage for authentication. Heritage then reached out to Roddenberry Jr. to coordinate the return of the Enterprise. “Once our team of experts concluded it was the real thing, we contacted Rod because we wanted to get the model back to where it belonged,” Maddalena says in a statement. “We’re thrilled the Enterprise is finally in dry dock.”

Last Saturday, Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena returned the 3-foot-long model Gene Roddenberry’s son. The handoff occurred at Heritage Auctions’ Beverly Hills location, where the Enterprise was stored for safekeeping.

“After five decades, I’m thrilled that someone happened upon this historic model of the USS Enterprise. I remember how it used to adorn my dad’s desk,” said Rod Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment. “I am tremendously grateful to Heritage Auctions for facilitating the return of this iconic piece of Star Trek history to my family. I can’t wait to figure out how we are going to share it with my extended family, Star Trek fans around the world. We look forward to making that announcement.”

Trek vets authenticated the model

Like the one housed at the Smithsonian, this is a key piece of Star Trek history. The authentication team included Star Trek design vets Doug Drexler, Denise Okuda, Mike Okuda, and Daren Dochterman. Drexler shared a photo of their work on Facebook (see below).

Mike Okuda also shared a pic of himself with Denise, Doug, and the model on Twitter/X…

Heritage Auctions has shared more images of the returned model so you can get a closer look…

Shouldn’t this have the taller bridge, bigger deflector dish, and spikes on the end of the nacelles?

Not if you look at the picture of the original model that sat on GR’s desk.

I wonder if it was modified after the pilot/intro were filmed.

From the book “The Enterprise NCC 1701 and The Model Maker” about the builder of the model Richard Dayton (written by his children), when discussing the condition of the model after it was completed in December of 1964: “I don’t believe it received any major damage nor do I recall repairing it except for the modifications made to resemble the same modifications made on the eleven-footer.”

So we’re looking at a new bridge dome, dish and nacelle domes but, as we know, the 11 footer was modified once the show was picked up so there are still going to be some subtle differences between the two.

Yes, some subtle differences, but generally changes to the 11 footer were repeated on the little brother. Here’s more from Datin: “It was updated along with the eleven-footer after the first pilot and again before the regular series episodes, and before the second season .” (BTW, its Datin, not Dayton, spelled it wrong earlier.)

All good, UFP!

ITS A FAKE!

Well played my friend… well played!

Darn Garak screwed up again.

Glad to hear it! That ship is firmly wedged into my heart, and the hearts of millions of fans.

not mine the 60’s designs are all trash un futuristic and dated

This is a lost artifact, now found. Is it possible to just enjoy the moment, even if it’s not your thing?

It’s not possible for trolls to enjoy aything.

i am not a troll i just don’t like tos or most of tng the new star trek series are my favorite trek shows dsc, snw, pic, lds, pro and enteprise was my first trek series but for me star trek is just another sci-fi franchise i enjoy along side b5,the 3 stargate series, andromeda ,warehouse 13,EUReKA,and star wars and doctor who

By itself, there’s nothing wrong with having a preference for Trek that origonated after TNG. Everything you enjoy for broadcast Sci-Fi (except Dr. Who, which started about the same time as TOS) wouldn’t be if it wern’t for that piece of ‘trash’ you’re so casually dismissive of. Roddenberry is right, this belongs in the Smithsonian along side the eleven foot model currently on display, your feelings aside. The word trash is inflammatory in this context. You may not have set out to troll, but that was the result.

is crap or garbage or cheep and cheesy unfuturistic looking low grade excuse for good sci-fi any better As for doctor who I only like modern doctor who I don’t like any 60’s and 70’s sci-fi and tng is boring as hell except for the borg and q episodes and a few other which are more normal sci-fi stuff happening cause it is all talk no do and the humans are all unrealistically perfect no conflicts between them at least the tng films and ds9 and voyager and ent somewhat fixed those isssues but the new trek shows fully fixed those issues also warehouse 13 and EUReKA and the 3 stargate series and Star Wars and b5 would have happened even without the original Star Trek as they have nothing to do or even simular to it and ds9 would not have happened with out b5 as the series bible was givin to berman to use to make ds9

also the only live action tv shows that started in the mid 60’s and early 70’s are non sci-fi shows like gilligan’s island and mchale’s navy and hogan’s heroes and Hawaii five-0 and m*a*s*h and the monkees

Oh classic Doctor Who is always fun to watch.

But to refer to it as trash is a bit over the top and rude.

You’re talking to a child, don’t waste your time.

Clearly the only taste you have is for the magic nose sculptures you eat off the bottom of your night table. I’m sure your only measure of scifi is for the sparkly effects and weak story lines that are easy to follow and predict just by the episode preview.

If you look at michelle’s other posts, that doesn’t seem even remotely possible.

I, on the other hand, share your excitement and enthusiasm.

Jeez, what a buzzkill.

no it is beaing realistic and not treating inatimate objects like they are to be worshiped and idolized i also don’t get nosolgic over anything unless it has a personal connection in my life not stuff outside my control and no connection to

Quick, find a Tribble and put it up to Michelle to see whether she is a klingon or just a human with execrable taste. Guessing you’re no fan of Saarinen or Eames or Frank Lloyd Wright either?

it is just a model when it breaks badly enough you can’t fix or it gets lost during a move you buy and build a new one i know cause i build models i got shelves full of Star Trek ship models i built and car models i built and alsorts of other types of models i have built

You have shelves full of everything except punctuation, apparently, you being able to construct anything save a proper sentence in English.

Sure, the original design is dated. But if that design didn’t exist then neither would the designs for the shows you obviously prefer. That designates the model as an object of some proper pop-historical significance, if not fan-worship.

Scotty says, “Lassie, don’t you think you ought to rephrase that?

Ok how about the 60’s design of the enterprise is dumb looking and does not fit visually between the nx-01 design and the tmp refit/constitution ll class design

…that’s not the fault of the original design. Rather…the crappy Enterprise TV show

The refit is different, but it was for a movie and it also looks awesome

Agreed, Corylea. Absolutely.

There’s just something so beautiful about that ship!

the visual retconed design from dsc and snw looks way better compared to the 60’s design which look looks horrible

I should have scrolled down first. Yeah, you’re trolling.

Right with you, I feel like I wasted time even responding.

No trolling this is just how I feel about the design of the every in tos

The carrot peeler nacelle struts, squished proportions, slag metal finish, and ridiculous bridge window?

The nx had a gun metal grey finish with aztecing and nacelle bussard clamps just like the dsc/snw enteprise has and the dsc/ snw enterprise has the same shape nacelle pylons and secondary hull shape and even neck hight and shape minus the torpedo launcher collar that the tmp refit does so it works better with the refit that took place unlike the 60’s design which does not fit visually between either and the bridge having a window with a heads up viewscreen display makes so much sense if the viewscreen sensors go out they can still see what is going on outside and do not have to rush to another bow facing window on another deck and relay what’s going on outside back to the bridge

Try punctuation, Michelle, it works a charm. Also try being less of a wet blanket.

no one asked you to repeat an already unpopular opinion. To quote the original Star Wars (which you probably ALSO find boring and dated)… “Move along. Move along.”

Not to agree with her but a lot of people cr@p on new Star Trek on here and no one gets all hot and bothered over that.

I’ve watched plenty of people getting plenty hot and plenty bothered by people crapping all over new Star Trek on here.

Taking a steaming dump on a steaming dump probably doesn’t really affect the smell.

You haven’t been reading the same comments as I have then.

I have only ever seen the final edited versions of the ot Lucas put out after prequels and prior to selling to Disney that had scenes replaced and edited and everything model and cheep spfx and vfx replaced with cgi and I love all 9 films of the skywalker saga equally as well as the two anthology films and the new live action series except for book of boba fett cause I never liked the character and think he was the most over rated character ever I only watched the episode with grogu and din djarin and Luke and Ahsoka in it as it connected to the mandalorian and now the Ahsoka series as well as the skywalker saga films and seasons 1-7 of the clone wars and Star Wars rebels I also love the bad batch and tales of the Jedi and can’t wait for the new Rey skywalker movie

Funny you should bring SW up … I was just on youtube to look at the end battle in the ‘despecialized’ version, which opens with two wonderful model shots of the rebel fleet instead of the horrible BABYLON-5 looking CG that replaced it, I guess so that the camera could do a sweeparound. Pretty sad looking ‘improvement.’

Your preference for the DSC Enterprise does not negate someone else’s preference for the TOS version.

To each their own. Love the 1701, no bloody A, B, C or D (or E, F, G for that matter).

Aye. A real beauty and a credit to her name.

Nice when something significant like that finds its way back to its ‘family.’ Good little story, heartwarming.

Due to its renewed fame, the model has reportedly decided to get a nacelle lift.

Ha, I never realized the nacelles weren’t quite parallel with the saucer!

Nice to see it found its way home. Kudos to all involved…

I was wondering about this- Thanks!

Nice to have some good news for a change.

I was thinking the same. There’s not enough of that out there these days.

Great this has been finally found and authenticated.

Don’t let Paramount+ use it at one of their pop-up promotional things; they don’t seem to care about Star Trek anymore.

This is wonderful news. Only a Vulcan or Android could fail to understand being sentimental about this.

I never knew the nacelles on the original were at that angle!

Hope Roddenberry gets this a top notch restoration and more people get to see it in person.

They weren’t at that angle (just look at the photos of Roddenberry examining the newly-completed model on the set of “The Cage” or the actors holding it for publicity stills). The nacelles have just sagged over the years — the bane of the design even for professional model makers, apparently.

I had to do some hefty triage to get them to stay upright when building those AMT models.

Gravity’s a b**ch, what can I say….

At 65, I can’t say much. And I’m just a guy. . .

I’m only a couple years behind you, but was horrified/amazed to find I’d shrunk nearly a 1/2 inch in the last year, so I’m under 6’2″ now. Gravity’s a bastard too.

I’m breaking my cardinal rule about offering up some unsolicited advice, it might not be a bad idea to get a checkup on dropping that half inch. Bone density issues can lead to a higher risk of fractures in the future.

That’s what my wife thought too, you’re right to put it out there. But it was my primary doctor’s nurse who took the measurement before an in-person visit, yet nobody in the office seemed concerned.

I just now got up and had my wife measure me against the apartment front door and she came away with 6′ 2-1/4″ — so no height loss after all. Guess they may not be making nurses like they used to.

Then again, the whole medical community seems to have fallen apart in the last few years. My wife had to wait more than 18 months just to get some special ‘important’ testing during the pandemic, not because Kaiser lacked doctors and lab techs, but because they lacked schedulers . If they’d just been able to put the request into the system in a different way, like most typical appointments, she could have scheduled an appointment herself online and gotten in within a couple months instead of nearly waiting 2 years. All because she had to wait for them to call her to schedule.

In the first year after the death of my wife of 30 years, I had become so exhausted from all the changes from bookkeeping and other paperwork (my wife had just retired from 40 years teaching higher math and being an administrator in high schools and community college, this she was the keeper of the books for our 30 years together) that I began having multiple balance issues and repeated falls. Apparently no bones were broken in those falls, but I did manage to maintain my 5’11.5″ height, and began to lose 100+ lbs. weight over the first year without trying (due to my cooking perhaps). I had been a type 2 diabetic, as well as other bad health signs, but am now (four years after my wife’s death) considered back to pre-diabetic, due to dropping weight, blood sugar, and a1c numbers. I feel as if my wife’s death, in a damnable twist of fate, took her from me, but gave me new life. Yet I would stay heavy and ill just to have her back for a year. Years before, she told me “If anything happens to me, I want you to be happy, to enjoy life, and find someone to love again.” Yet I just can’t. Not yet. Oh, I tried dating last year for a short time, and hated it and myself. My heart was not in it. She was the one love of my life, and likely shall be…

I feel ya, Kev. We got a piece of good news that Christina’s weird thyroid growth has only a 1% chance of being cancer, which is a real break given she isn’t fully over the surgery/chemo combo for the ovarian cancer last year. We know the ovarian type she has will absolutely return so it is a kind of death sentence, but there is a possibility of some years yet, even though the chemo pushed her a1c numbers up into diabetic zone, gave her extreme neuropathy and cost her most of her hearing.

On a decidedly lighter note, I was thinking ‘Count Plasma and the Platelets ‘ would be a good band name, if you ever decide to make another Count Plasma movie and wanted to include musical numbers.

I have made some headway on the formation of ILM script at last, and hope to actually finish it and get an agent again this year. Maybe then, with that monkey off my back and hopefully out to market in time for a 50th anniversary SW tie-in, I can start writing about stuff that is of more personal interest again, like spaceship-bound stuff where the characters say ‘shoot’ instead of ‘fire’ because the latter means ‘something is burning on the ship.’ Getting my a1c down to 6.5 and keeping it there seems to be doing sporadic wonders for my long-gunked-up creative juices.

I’m keeping good thoughts and positive vibes for Christina, and for you as well. My latest a1c was 5.9, but I blame that on my lust for a weekly pint or two of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I was down to 5.7 not long ago. Each time I get on the scale I’m down another 2 to 5 lbs. but it’ll be a while ’til I get under 175 again. I’m busting my you-know-what to shoot some digital video again on my film project, but I have a couple of interesting actors, and keep hoping for cool enough days to shoot desert exteriors. And I’m glad to learn that you are working on that script, as I vaguely recall some mention of it in a recent year or so. I’m making use of an AI assist on mine to help me fill in some blanks to get mine finished. Normally I’d wing it, but my friends are anxious to see a finished script. Though I’d be happy as a clam making the whole thing hand-held and improvised, ’70s-’80s style! ;) Certain lines come to mind: “Oh Jerry, come down off your ivory….tower?”

For me, the stuff I remember being most excited about is mostly the ones we didn’t get to do … I wrote an MTX: GOBI ZONE opener on spec for you, based on your admiration for the TMP transporter malfunction scene, and I had the voice of the soon-to-be-demised-transportee coming across on the radio after the initial successful teleport ,checking in with, ‘I claim this for all the queens in England.’ (years later, you were thinking of a different take on teleporation, something more like THE OUTER LIMITS’ ‘The Mice,’ and I remember messing with a story for that too, but I don’t know what happened with it.)

Plus there was that Arthur Pierce WORLD AND ANTI-WORLD project, which would have been the most epic super-8 project anybody ever tried (way beyond Lew Place!)

But for the most part, I really wish we’d gotten to do that whole contemporary MASTER OF THE WORLD film, instead of just the denouement where I washed ashore in Monterrey. Mainly just because I LOVED the idea of you shooting a oner for the ‘landing in helicopter and getting out wearing a business suit’ intro you had planned for the San Fran opening, which was wholly within my Bond-obsessed vibe. Y’know, I still haven’t seen the Vincent Price/Charles Bronson film after all these decades!

I’m sorry to read of your wife’s health issues, but glad that she is currently doing well, which is all any of us can count on. Just yesterday I was outside doing nothing more challenging or life-threatening than weeding my yard when a sudden, stupid mishap brought me within a quarter-inch of losing my right eye. We are all so, so fragile.

Yes, she is indeed due and well deserving of some TLC.

Funny, when I built the AMT model of the Enterprise back in the 70s, it too wound up having droopy nacelle issues. Now I can retcon my memories to say I was imitating the original model. :D

Seriously, I do hope that they do some restoration on the model. It’s dirty, the “Enterprise” on the top of the saucer is in bad shape, and while I can see them squeezing the aft ends of the nacelles closer together to facilitate forced perspective, I don’t thing they look as droopy on Gene’s desk. It’s in good hands now.

A couple of news stories reported that it will be restored and put on display. Details to follow.

Yes, it’s in good hands now.

And because Paramount can’t get their hands on it, they won’t be able to auction it off.

The droop is proof that the Enterprise was always meant to only operate in space, not in a gravitational field.

Perfect design. Love that ship

Nacelle droop and misalignment; a worry, to be sure….

Every lady has her own charm, despite “nacelle droop” and “misalignment”, even the Enterprise… :D

So long as it doesn’t get any hot flashes. It is made of wood, after all…

Too many innuendoes… not enough time… does not compute… does not… COMPUTE… ERROR! ERROR! Dooooooes noooooot…. [explodes like Landru, M-5, and countless other outsmarted AIs]

Reading that made me think of some arcane little tidbit from TAS, specifically THE TIME TRAP, where one of the other ships caught in that dimension/plane/nexus/whosiwhatsis is reported to be made of wood.

I don’t recall if it was in the aired episode or just the AD Foster novelization. I suppose I should pop the DVD set in — it came in a cute plastic container similar to the TOS tricorder-looking dvd clamshell sets that I keep my TOS blurays — to see.

That was my favorite TAS episode when I was a kid, back when it first aired. The thought of a hidden graveyard of spaceships was fascinating to me.

TIME TRAP and JIHAD were my faves as a kid, along with MAGICKS OF MEGUS TWO, which I’m pretty sure my catholic saturday school catechism teacher decried to be heretical. That was around the time my little league career ended and I started making up excuses to get out of all church activities for ever !

Pretty sure that was an ADF addition, but it’s been decades in both cases, so don’t hold me to it.

I love a happy ending.

You just know this long strange journey is going to make a fun documentary

I really hope it is a documentary! I would support that kickstarter!

Do we know what happened to the “owner”? Did they get any money?

I believe it was mentioned somewhere that the individual who purchased the storage locker was compensated. I doubt it was anything near the millions they would have gotten for it at auction, though.

Millions, I don’t know. The TMP and TNG Enterprises went for less than a million, and those were models with modern detailing, working lights, etc. Of course, this model was literally the first based upon Jeffries’ design ever built (aside from a four-inch balsa prototype forever lost to time), so it has considerably more historicity, but millions’ worth? I doubt it.

That said, it would’ve been a nice payday for someone.

‘treat her like a lady and she will always bring you home…’

I have friends who worked on TNG through Enterprise, and later PICS3. Another friend was involved with TMP 4K remaster. They were all brought it to authenticate it’s the actual model. It’s authentic. I hope it ends up at the Star Trek Set Tour in Ticonderoga NY.

I’d be up for it being displayed at the Smithsonian, personally….

Either way would be great! The Galileo is at The Set Tour. I think the owner of the tour has a relationship with Roddenberry. We’ll see…

It would be awesome if they put it up with the 11 footer in a huge shadowbox, so that if you looked at them from the right angle (and added some kind of fiberoptic pulse lighting between the two models), you could get a ‘Picard maneuver’ effect live right at the museum, like the little ship jumped to warp and came out right in your face.

That’s assuming they match the paint jobs up, of course.

I doubt that they will, though. When both models were updated for the regular series the three-footer didn’t get the “weathering” treatment of its larger sibling. My guess is that any restoration will be to get the ship back to its condition on Roddenberry’s desk, which in itself will be a reasonable curation and a lot of work.

…Was discovered amongst a stack of documents at Mar-a-Lago

They’re lucky to get it back – I’d have kept the thing

Really? What would you have done with it, hang it off the ceiling in your garage?

But seriously, I’ve seen this happen on Antiques Roadshow, where someone comes in with something they think is worth a couple hundred bucks, and it turns out to be worth hundreds of thousands, or even millions. They couldn’t afford to keep it because of the cost of insurance alone.

Simply the most beautiful starship design ever to grace the screens of any size. It’s perspective sculptural perfections allows it to be filmed from every angle makes it a powerful looking ship moving forward. Restorations to bring it back to what’s seen on Gene Roddenberry’s desk is a natural direction to go.

I’m glad it was returned…

but please fix those crooked nacelles before my head explodes!

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on the return of the original model of the USS Enterprise from the TV show “Star Trek.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.

Star Trek: Discoverys Pilot Just Joined Enterprises Legacy

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Keyla Detmer piloted the ISS Enterprise in Star TrekL Discovery season 5, joining the ranks of Enterprise helmsman in the process.
  • The USS Enterprise has had other notable helmsmen like Sulu and Geordi La Forge across different versions.
  • Discovery provided Detmer with the chance to pilot a version of the Enterprise, filmed on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 enabled the show's pilot, Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) to join an important legacy for the USS Enterprise. Detmer has been the helmsman of the USS Discovery since season 1, and an integral part of Discovery 's cast of characters up through season 5 . Although she has largely been a supporting character on Discovery , Detmer has still enjoyed some important moments, including a few memorable subplots in both seasons 1 and 3.

Despite Detmer not appearing in Discovery season 5, episode 5 , the show bestowed an important milestone on her off-screen. Episode 5 saw the retrieval of the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise after a clue in the search for the Progenitor's technology led Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) to a heated confrontation with L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow) on the abandoned ship. Discovery managed to save the Mirror Enterprise from interdimensional space , and Captain Burham assigned Lieutenant Commander Detmer and Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) to take it back to Federation Headquarters.

5 Ways Star Trek: Discoverys Mirror Enterprise Is Different From USS Enterprise

Star trek: discoverys pilot commander detmer is the latest enterprise helmsman, detmer flew the iss enterprise in discovery season 5.

Thanks to episode 5, Detmer has joined the ranks of those who had piloted a version of the Enterprise in Star Trek history . Detmer could have had the opportunity to pilot the USS Enterprise during Discovery season 2, especially considering that its Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) , was a main character on the show. Discovery 's time jump to the 32nd century made any further encounters with the Prime Universe's Enterprise impossible, but season 5 finally gave Detmer the chance to be included in the category of legendary Enterprise helmsman.

It seems Discovery has given Detmer the chance to pilot the only Enterprise she will likely ever get to during the rest of the show's run.

Although the ISS Enterprise is different from the Prime Universe's USS Enterprise, the two are similar enough that Discovery filmed episode 5's Enterprise scenes on the set for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is set on the USS Enterprise in Discovery 's old time period, the 23rd century. It seems Discovery has given Detmer the chance to pilot the only Enterprise she will likely ever get to during the rest of the show's run. Of course, Detmer piloting any version of the USS Enterprise is still a huge honor, considering which characters she shares the distinction with.

Star Treks Enterprise Helmsmen Explained

The uss enterprise has had some notable helmsmen.

The various versions of the Enterprise have had some incredible helmsmen, and the ship has the interesting distinction of being piloted by two father-daughter teams at different times . The most famous Enterprise Helmsman is, of course, Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) from Star Trek: The Original Series . Sulu and his other versions, including his Mirror Universe counterpart, faithfully piloted the Enterprise for many years of the franchise's timeline, and Sulu's daughter, Demora (Jacqueline Kim) took on the task years later during Star Trek Generations .

Sulu isn't the only famous character to have been an Enterprise helmsman, however. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was the initial helmsman for the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation , and like Sulu would share the honor with his daughter, Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) who took on the role in Star Trek: Picard season 3. More recently, Strange New Worlds introduced Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) as the helmsman under Captain Pike. Ortegas has proved to be one of Star Trek 's best pilots and a memorable addition to the Enterprise pilot ranks , similar to Detmer on Star Trek: Discovery .

Star Trek: Discoverys Pilot Just Joined Enterprises Legacy

Screen Rant

Discovery’s mirror universe enterprise just set a star trek enterprise record.

Star Trek: Discovery brought back the ISS Enterprise, revealing that the Mirror Universe ship set a new Star Trek record for ships named Enterprise.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise outlasted any USS Enterprise, surviving over 900 years in a pocket of interdimensional space.
  • Despite being a warship, the ISS Enterprise endured longer than any USS Enterprise built for exploration.
  • Starships named Enterprise, like USS Enterprise-D and USS Enterprise-F, have shorter life spans compared to the immortal ISS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 brought back the ISS Enterprise, revealing that the Mirror Universe ship set an impressive record for starships named Enterprise. Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, epsiode 5, "Mirrors" was an unexpected download of new information about the Mirror Universe. In their pursuit of Moll (Eve Harlow), L'ak (Elias Toufexis), and the Progenitors' ancient treasure, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) ended up piloting the Mirror Universe's Starship Enterprise into Star Trek 's Prime Universe.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 , "Mirrors," the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise was abandoned in a pocket of interdimensional space. The ISS Enterprise was damaged, including its warp core, but it had enough systems functioning to make the journey through a wormhole with the help of the USS Discovery. Because the Mirror Universe's version of the Enterprise originated in the 23rd century and crossed over into Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, this makes the ISS Enterprise over 900 years old , meaning it survived far longer than any other version of the Starship Enterprise.

The Mirror Universe debuted in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 4, "Mirror, Mirror," when Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and some of his crew members find themselves in the brutal parallel universe.

5 Ways Star Trek: Discovery’s Mirror Enterprise Is Different From USS Enterprise

Star trek’s mirror universe iss enterprise has lasted longer than any uss enterprise, the iss enterprise remained hidden in a pocket of interdimensional space..

As the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, the USS Enterprise often participates in dangerous missions, and the Star Trek films have a habit of finding ways to destroy the Enterprise. Starfleet ships go through a lot, and it's impressive enough for a ship to survive for decades, let alone centuries. As Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) explore the ISS Enterprise, they find a plaque detailing the ship's journey from the Mirror Universe. Captain Kirk's visit in Star Trek: The Original Series had a profound influence on Mirror Universe Spock (Leonard Nimoy) , who later initiated a series of reforms to make the Terran Empire more peaceful.

It's ironic that the ISS Enterprise, a warship, endured for far longer than any of the USS Enterprise starships built for exploration.

Spock eventually became the Terran High Chancellor but was later killed by those who opposed him. Despite this, Spock's beliefs inspired the crew of the ISS Enterprise to mutiny, with the help of "a Kelpien slave turned rebel leader" — aka Mirror Universe Saru (Doug Jones) . These refugees fled the Mirror Universe on the ISS Enterprise, and the ship ended up in a pocket of interdimensional space where it sat for the next several centuries. Aside from this visit, the ISS Enterprise remained in the state it had been left in for centuries until Moll, L'ak, Captain Burnham, and Cleveland Booker boarded the ship in their pursuit of the Progenitors' treasure.

One of the original refugees named Dr. Cho paid a visit to the Mirror Universe Enterprise sometime in the 24th century to hide a clue leading to the location of the Progenitors' technology.

How Long Has Each USS Enterprise Lasted In Star Trek?

Starships named enterprise see their fair share of dangerous missions..

Many incarnations of the USS Enterprise were completely destroyed through Star Trek , but some were simply decommissioned. The original Enterprise NX-01 commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) survived its historic mission in Star Trek: Enterprise , eventually winding up on display at the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime. The USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Captain James Kirk saw 40 years of service before it was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . The Kelvin Universe version of the Enterprise in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies was destroyed by Krall (Idris Elba) in the third film, Star Trek Beyond .

Star Trek: Picard season 3 left the fate of the USS Enterprise-E commanded by Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) as an open question, and what happened to the USS Enterprise-B is unknown.

After being commissioned at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , the USS Enterprise-A served for only 7 years before finding a home at the Fleet Museum. The USS Enterprise-C was fated to be destroyed in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Yesterday's Enterprise." The USS Enterprise-D of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was the Federation flagship for 8 years before it crashed on Veridian III in Star Trek Generations. The D was restored in Star Trek: Picard season 3, which also revealed the USS Enterprise-F was retired to make way for the USS Enterprise-G. Ultimately, no version of the USS Enterprise has survived anywhere near as long as the ISS Enterprise found in Star Trek: Discovery .

To Boldly Return —

Long-lost model of the uss enterprise returned to roddenberry family, it showed up in an ebay listing; now roddenberry's son wants to show it to fans..

Samuel Axon - Apr 19, 2024 9:05 pm UTC

This mysterious model appeared on eBay with little fanfare.

The first-ever model of Star Trek's USS Enterprise NCC-1701 has been returned to the Roddenberry family, according to an ABC News report.

The 3-foot model was used to shoot the pilot and credits scene for Star Trek's original series in the 1960s and was used occasionally for shots throughout the series. (Typically, a larger, 11-foot model was used for shots after the pilot.) The model also sat on series creator Gene Roddenberry's desk for several years.

It went missing in the late 1970s; historians and collectors believe it belonged to Roddenberry himself, that he lent it to a production house working on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and that it was never returned. Its whereabouts were unknown until last fall, when a listing for a mysterious model of the Enterprise appeared on eBay .

Further Reading

The eBay account that posted the item specialized in selling artifacts found in storage lockers that end up without an owner, either because of failure to pay or death.

The model appeared in this promotional image with Roddenberry.

The model was turned over by the eBay seller to Texas-based Heritage Auctions. News spread that it had been discovered, and Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, made public statements that he would like to see it returned to his family.

After that, there were months of silence, and its fate was unknown—until now. Heritage Auctions announced that it had given the model to Rod Roddenberry. Details of the exchange have not been shared, but Roddenberry said he did compensate Heritage in some way.

Heritage reached out directly to Roddenberry upon acquiring the object and reportedly decided to return it because it was "the right thing to do." Roddenberry said that he "felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that" but didn't disclose a sum.

Promotional images of the model with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Roddenberry also revealed what he has planned for the model:

This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it, and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.

He runs a group called the Roddenberry Foundation that has scanned and digitized many relics from Star Trek's ideation and production over the years, so it's likely the Foundation will get a crack at the model, too.
