Bloodwine scooped from barrel

The first shared toast of bloodwine between a Human and a Klingon

Bloodwine was a popular alcoholic beverage among the Klingons , best served warm. ( DS9 : " The Way of the Warrior ") As with many Klingon foods and beverages, it was not for the faint of heart . Bloodwine was known to be highly intoxicating, to the point that most non-Klingons were scarcely capable of tolerating it; it was twice as potent as whiskey . ( VOY : " The Killing Game, Part II ") The first Human known to consume the beverage was Jonathan Archer , while he awaited the verdict of his trial on Narendra III . ( ENT : " Judgment ")

Klingon captains and generals were fond of carrying several barrels of their favorite vintages to celebrate victories. Martok and Worf considered the vintage of 2309 to be the finest. ( SNW : " The Broken Circle "; DS9 : " Treachery, Faith and the Great River ", " Once More Unto the Breach ", " When It Rains... ", " What You Leave Behind ") Worf liked his bloodwine very young and very sweet. ( DS9 : " Change of Heart ") He had programmed the USS Enterprise -D replicators with a close approximation of bloodwine. ( TNG : " Gambit, Part II ") In the Klingon Defense Force , bloodwine was available in the mess hall from barrels for crewmembers during meals. When more was needed a fresh barrel was brought in from elsewhere, presumably from the ship's stores. ( LD : " wej Duj ")

Bloodwine did not have bubbles . Constable Odo found this to be a pity. After he and Miles O'Brien had been drinking it for a time in the Hall of Warriors at Ty'Gokor , O'Brien admitted that he thought he was actually starting to like the stuff. Odo tended to agree, stating that "except for the taste" that "it's really not that bad". ( DS9 : " Apocalypse Rising ")

Bloodwine was traditionally consumed by warriors being inducted into the Order of the Bat'leth as part of the celebration/ endurance test given the night before. ( DS9 : " Apocalypse Rising ")

Bloodwine was used in a symbolic gesture following the Invasion of Cardassia in 2375 . While standing on the surface of Cardassia, Martok offered William Ross and Benjamin Sisko bloodwine which had been previously promised for celebration of victory. However, at that moment, Ross and Sisko reflected on the destructive nature of war, and poured their glasses of bloodwine on the ground. ( DS9 : " What You Leave Behind ")

In 2402 , Beverly Crusher became heavily intoxicated after consuming large quantities of bloodwine at 10 Forward Avenue . ( PIC : " The Last Generation ")

Background information [ ]

The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 426) described bloodwine as a variety of red Klingon wine .

Whether there is actual blood in the ingredients has never been revealed; however, the Star Trek Cookbook suggests that bloodwine is made of fermented blood and sugar .

While in later seasons, bloodwine was usually served from large kettles or smaller, silver bottles, in " The House of Quark " it was served from a glass bottle in the shape of grapes. The same type of bottle appeared in " Vortex " where it contained langour .

A blood wine bottle was among the items which were sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1]

In 2012, Vinport produced a Klingon bloodwine made (inauthentically) from grapes.

Following the success of the Château Picard bottling made at the actual Château Picard, Star Trek Wines pulled out the stops to make a culturally and linguistically accurate Bloodwine

  • Ben O'Donnell

Many—surprisingly many—wine lovers had been waiting to hear the words. " Hov leng ghIrep HIqmey vep ," reads the announcement. " tugh paw tlhIngan ‘Iw HIq pIHqu’lu’bogh yuQjIjDIvI' ghIrep HIq chu’ perlu’bogh je ."

"The latest release from Star Trek Wines features highly anticipated Klingon Bloodwine," plus a new United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc, is what that means. The announcement comes today from Wines that Rock, the creators and keepers of the Star Trek –inspired wines, in a fully dual-language series of press releases for both English- and Klingon-language audiences. The label for the new wines is also in Klingon, so far as the equally fierce warrior clan at the TTB allows, as will be one rendition of the Star Trek Wines website. The winemakers consulted with multiple Klingon-language authorities to get this right, and here at Unfiltered, we deeply admire that level of commitment to a bit.

The Star Trek wines began as a collaboration between Wines that Rock, CBS, E2 Family Winery in Lodi, Calif., and Château Picard in Bordeaux's St.-Estèphe. For those not up on Trek canon, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard is both the commander of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise and a winemaker in Burgundy, Earth; his lesser-known vocation has been explored more in the new series Star Trek: Picard . After a bit of back-and-forth, the Wines that Rock team convinced the unrelatedly-named Bordeaux estate to get onboard with a Picard-from-the-show label last year, and the five or six batches of it have all sold out quickly, according to Wines that Rock COO Spencer Brewer . To pair, the company also issued a Special Reserve United Federation of Planets Zinfandel.

That feat of "in universe" verisimilitude would be tough to top, but the Trek Wines team knew they'd need to tackle one of the universe's most infamous pours: the Bloodwine from the warrior empire. The cues from the show were not particularly promising for 2020-era winemaking and marketing: Bloodwine came in packaging that looks like an oil can or spray-painted Tequila bottle, and it's twice as potent as whiskey.

Since most Earthlings find both of those things unpalatable, Wines that Rock eschewed them, but took plenty of other pains to make a Bloodwine that both Klingons and humans could enjoy. "What we wanted to do was make it as real as possible to Klingon culture," Brewer told Unfiltered. "And the juice had to rock. If you're going to open it up, it's got to taste like something a Klingon would want to drink."

For the juice part, they started out pretty potent: "We were going for something really intense, like really intense Petite Sirah," said Brewer. They landed on a still-pretty-intense, "extremely robust" blend of Cabernet from Lodi (90 percent) and Mendocino (10 percent). (The Sauvignon Blanc is for those who prefer white to red or blood.) For the culture part, they enlisted David Holquinn ( DeyvID HolQIn ), a member of the Klingon Assault Group (it's more of a social-cultural thing than a violence thing) and Klingon Language Institute to help vet potential bottle and label designs.

"Each part of the way through this, what we would do is come up with a word, a title, a phrase and we would shoot it by these guys, and say, 'What would a Klingon do, how would they do it?'" said Brewer. The growler-style bottle is extremely wieldable with one hand, corks are emblazoned with different Klingon phrases and the Bloodwine bottle necks, naturally, are dipped in red wax.

HolQIn was most pleased with the outcome. “The design of the Bloodwine … feels authentically Klingon from the overall aesthetic to the finer detail," he told Unfiltered via email. "The Klingon Bloodwine bottles will be glorious collector's pieces worthy of display in any captain's quarters or warrior's den."

Votto Vines, the company behind the popular Juan Ortiz Star Trek wine collection, has just unveiled the latest addition to its Trek line of wines... Klingon Bloodwine, or tlhIngan 'Iw HIq. The Klingon Bloodwine is a medium-bodied red blend of Malbec, Syrah and Petit Verdot from the Paso Robles AVA in California. A 2012 vintage, it can be enjoyed with grillled meats and mature cheeses, or such traditional Klingon fare as Heart of Targ.

A Short History Of Klingon Bloodwine In The Star Trek Universe

Still from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This post contains  spoilers for the season 2 premiere of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

Klingons have one of the most interesting cultures in "Star Trek," and like many cultures, theirs has a heavy emphasis on food and drink, particularly bloodwine. Bloodwine has been the Klingon beverage of choice for as long as there have been Klingons in "Star Trek," (unless you're Michael Dorn's Worf, of course, and you prefer prune juice), but it's still a tiny bit mysterious to non-Klingon drinkers and it apparently packs quite a punch.

In the season 2 premiere of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," both La'an (Christina Chong) and Spock (Ethan Peck) drink bloodwine in order to appeal to the Klingons for diplomatic reasons, with some pretty entertaining results. But what is bloodwine, exactly? Is it simply that — wine made from blood? And how strong is it? Turns out, "Star Trek" episodes throughout the franchise have answered most (if not all) of fans' questions about the beloved alien beverage.

According to the 1999 official "Star Trek" cookbook, bloodwine is made with fermented blood and sugar. That makes it closer to blood rum , really, which explains why it is notoriously strong. The drink has been a part of "Star Trek" lore for decades, so let's dig into the history of this potent potable and try to figure out why some non-Klingons seem to love it and others don't fare as well.

Wine made for warriors

Most of what we know about bloodwine comes from episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and "Star Trek: Voyager." The drink occasionally appears or is referenced in the other shows, but "Deep Space Nine" and "Next Generation" in particular had lots of the bloody beverage because of the first Klingon Starfleet officer, Worf (Michael Dorn) . In fact, bloodwine first appeared in season 2, episode 8 of "Next Generation," "A Matter of Honor," an episode in which Worf's brother Kurn (Tony Todd) asks him to perform a Klingon ritual suicide. It would appear most often in "Deep Space Nine," as the Klingons are featured heavily, first as antagonists under the influence of a Changeling pretending to be General Martok (J.G. Hertzler) and then as allies in the fight against the Changelings and the rest of the Dominion.

Martok and Worf would even discuss their favorite vintages (2309 was apparently a very good year for bloodwine) and Worf reveals that he likes his bloodwine "very young and very sweet" in episodes of "Deep Space Nine." Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) brought a barrel of bloodwine with her when she served alongside Worf and Martok on a mission into Dominion territory, ingratiating her to the Klingon crew in record time. In the season 2 premiere of "Strange New Worlds," Spock and La'an both chug some of the drink to do the very same thing, to slightly different effect.

One heck of a hangover

So what do the non-Klingon bloodwine drinkers have to say about the beverage? While undercover aboard a Klingon ship, shapeshifter Odo (René Auberjonois) said that "except for the taste ... it's not that bad." Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) of the U.S.S. Cerritos is complimentary of the beverage and gets plastered on the stuff with a cartoon Martok. In "Strange New Worlds," La'an sits and has a drinking contest with several different individuals, managing to put back mug after mug of bloodwine without spewing or passing out, which is pretty impressive but makes sense given her heritage. After all, she's related to Khan Noonien Singh , the genetically engineered superhuman who became an authoritarian dictator on Earth before being put into stasis, so it's entirely likely that she has some better-than-average resistance to toxins, including alcohol. It's also possible that she's just a total badass, so who knows?

Spock, on the other hand, has a few mugs of the stuff with his new Klingon comrades, proving himself to the warriors and earning their trust by handling the potent beverage. Vulcans are stronger and faster than humans, but it seems like they're not that much better at holding their booze, as Spock has a horrible hangover the next day when he goes through his debriefing. Oh well, it was worth it to avoid an intergalactic incident! I just want to know why they don't have hangover cures in the 23rd century — they have teleporters and warp-speed travel but all they can offer for hangovers is some aspirin and a "live long and prosper"? C'mon.

Star Trek 's Official Klingon Bloodwine Lets You Get Smashed Like Worf

True warriors practice healthy drinking lifestyles.

There is, frankly, a distressing number of official Star Trek boozes out there already, from Scotty scotch to Ten Forward’s most potent offerings . But now for those who don’t want to sup on something made by Federation dogs and get their wine on like a true warrior, the Klingons have entered the fermented grape fray.

TrekCore has got a look at the next two releases in the official Star Trek wine line from Wines That Rock. The first is a Federation Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, a follow up to last year’s Zinfandel released alongside the special Star Trek: Picard tie- in bottles of Chateau Picard’s finest .

But that, like the haughtiest of Starfleet officials, is kind of boring. You’re here for the other 2020 offering, which escapes the dull bonds of Starfleet HQ and heads on over to Qo’noS : it’s none other than the Klingon’s beverage of choice, Bloodwine!

Image for article titled Star Trek's Official Klingon Bloodwine Lets You Get Smashed Like Worf

It’s never really said in Star Trek if Bloodwine actually has blood in it—we only assume because, well, it’s the Klingons, and that seems suitably extra for them. All we really do know is that they drink it by the barrel-load and it is extremely intoxicating for non-Klingon imbibers, with Captain Janeway once describing it in “The Killing Game, Part II” as being twice as strong as whisky. The official Bloodwine is perhaps not as potentially gross or even as potentially potent: it’s a Cabernet Sauvignon, “cultivated to produce strong flavors that glisten a vibrant ruby color in the glass.” Of course, a true Klingon is supping out of a nice tankard, but hey, what you gonna do?

While this official Bloodwine might not quite be up to canonical standards, Wines That Rock at least went the extra mile with the bottling process, collaborating with the Klingon Language Institute and the Klingon Assault Group to craft a detailed, wax-sealed red-and-black bottle design that includes all the culturally appropriate Klingon design motifs to make you feel suitably filled with honor as you crack it open (and find yourself looking at a cork with one of four different Klingon proverbs printed on it, fancy!).

All that honor and glory for the Empire comes at a price though: a bottle of the Federation Special Reserve white will set you back $40, while Bloodwine is available now for $50 a pop . Just make sure you’ve got some gagh to go with it—and maybe a cup of raktajino for the morning after, depending on how much you get through.

The line of official Star Trek Wines is expanding with two new releases, including one fit for Klingon warriors. Wines That Rock has announced a 2018 Klingon Bloodwine Cabernet Sauvignon and a United Federation of Planets Special Reserve 2019 Sauvignon Blanc.

“ Star Trek Wines is one of our all-time favorite projects. The collaboration between Star Trek experts from ViacomCBS Consumer Products team, our award-winning winemakers and designers, as well as several of the world’s leading Star Trek and Klingon experts have produced two new additions to the Official Star Trek Wines Collection that our entire company are proud of,” said Wines That Rock’s President Howard Jackowitz. “Our goal is always to create great-tasting, limited edition, collectible wines that we as fans want to own and enjoy. As Klingon Warriors would say – Qapla’ !”

Klingon Bloodwine ($50 per bottle)

Fans of the original Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation will recognize the ceremonial Klingon bloodwine, a salute to Klingon culture deeply rooted in the three pillars of honor, duty, and tradition.

In honoring the ancient methods of the great Klingon vintners, Wines That Rock chose premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to create a traditional bloodwine, cultivated to produce strong flavors that glisten a vibrant ruby color in the glass with aromas of dark chocolate and bold flavors. Each bottle is hand filled and expertly wax-dipped at E2 Family Winery.

The Klingon Bloodwine was developed in conjunction with the ViacomCBS Consumer Products team, along with the leaders of KAG (Klingon Assault Group) and the KLI (Klingon Language Institute) for their expertise in all things Klingon. Everything from the design aesthetics, use of language and the wine itself was carefully crafted with authenticity in mind. As a special ‘Easter Egg’ for fans, Bloodwine bottles also feature four separate, unique corks that were produced with Klingon proverbs.

Pre-sale of the Klingon Wines is available now with a ship date of September 17th, The Klingon Day of Honor.

Federation Special Reserve ($40 per bottle)

The second new wine being released on September 3rd is the all-new United Federation of Planets Special Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. Each limited edition bottle is individually numbered. Designed as a companion to the United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel, its futuristic round shape and unique label cut were inspired by the Starfleet Delta and are a nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation official issue uniforms. The United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc was crafted by an intergalactic sommelier and designed to please palates on multiple planets. The bottles elegant design and premium wine quality were created as if they were to be served at official United Federation of Planets gatherings including diplomatic banquets, Federation Council meetings, and planetary assemblies. Both Federation wines pay homage to the history and mission of The Federation, a dream that became a reality and spread throughout the galaxy.

The two new Star Trek wines join the previously released Chateau Picard Cru Bourgeois and Special Reserve United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel. All four are available exclusively at StarTrekWines.com , and you can get all four tpgether for $190.

Looks like someone beat us to it haha. FairPlay to TM allowing my comment.

Ok, the Klingon Bloodline is tempting if only as a collectable for the bottle.

My spouse is sufficiently intrigued to be musing about whether one should drink it or save it with the label intact.

Problem is, I don’t think it’s going to be available in Ontario. LCBO please use your market power and bring it in so it’s not too expensive, taxes notwithstanding.

LCBO is crap… cross over to Quebec and go to the SAQ!

They know their fine spirits!

Klingon bloodwine is my drink of choice.

You’re too young to be hitting the blood wine Ninja, might I suggest sticking to the prune juice!

I already got one. You should drink some vodka.

Vodka? Where I’m from, that’s soda pop… ;)

You must be Irish.

Well I guess if you’ve already ordered one then the only thing to say is k’plah. Enjoy!

Okay, but they seriously missed the mark by not branding the label “Star Trek: Deep Space Wine.”

Have you ever wanted to drink like a Klingon?

Finally, you can drink like a warrior and celebrate even the smallest of victories. Wines That Rock, the same company that gave us the Chateau Picard Bordeaux and the United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel, is now coming out with Klingon Bloodwine and United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc.

The company has gone to great lengths to pay attention to " Star Trek " details — the press release even came in both English and Klingon. In addition to working closely with the ViacomCBS Consumer Products team, they consulted a number of "Star Trek" experts and organizations, including the Klingon Assault Group and the Klingon Language Institute .

As a special "Easter egg" for fans, Bloodwine bottles also feature four separate, unique corks that were produced with Klingon proverbs. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Bloodwine Explained

A Klingon smiles devilishly

Contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," Season 2, Episode 1

One of the greatest aspects of the "Star Trek" franchise is its capacity to explore space and introduce fantastic and varied cultures. Some may be peaceful and simple, while others have ornate structures of power and a lust for battle. Others may even lack a simple and clear-cut definition.

One of the most iconic cultures and species in "Star Trek" are the Klingons, who put a premium on fighting, honor, and tradition, with one of their most notable traits being the consumption of the bloodwine beverage and a complete and working language .

In the first episode of Season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," the crew of the USS Enterprise receives a distress call from La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) from a border planet that is shared between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Upon arrival on the planet, the crew finds La'an engaged in a drinking contest with a surly Klingon, and the two jeer each other for their ability to handle the potent drink. Later, even Spock (Ethan Peck) gets a chance to try some after he exposes a false flag operation. Bloodwine is an essential aspect of Klingon culture as it's used to celebrate important victories. Klingons often stockpile the drink for such occasions, and the liquid is known for its incredibly intoxicating properties, which probably helps to explain why that crowd in Episode 1 is so feisty and animated!

Bloodwine is incredibly important to Klingon culture

As mentioned earlier, bloodwine is an incredibly strong drink that isn't for the occasional weekend warrior. Considering its genesis within the Klingon culture, bloodwine is often a hallmark of great battles and rites of passage. Besides being used to celebrate glorious combat, bloodwine is also important in the Order of Bat'leth induction and is given to those Klingons that have distinguished themselves in battle. For those that aren't entirely keen on "Star Trek" lore, the Order of Bat'leth contains the most notable Klingon warriors, and these fighters are inducted once a year by whoever is the current Klingon chancellor.

Oddly enough, the drinking of bloodwine occurs a full day before the Order of Bat'leth ceremony; that in itself is part of the process. If one can drink bloodwine for a full day before a big party, they must surely be a fearsome combatant.

With a name like bloodwine, one might suspect that the beverage is brewed with blood, and that isn't too far from the truth. Although not truly specified, the "Star Trek" resource Memory Alpha notes some ambiguity regarding the process of the drink's creation, with the "Star Trek Encyclopedia" saying that bloodwine is a distinct red wine. Meanwhile, the "Star Trek Cookbook" says that bloodwine is brewed by fermenting blood and sugar. The only consistency here is that the beverage is typically served warm, which starkly contrasts the many terrestrial wines available today. One thing is certain, though; one should have an iron stomach if they plan to guzzle down some Klingon bloodwine.

Whether drunk while reveling in triumph or simply enjoying life among friends, this could be the finest vintage of Klingon Bloodwine until 2309. Traditionally twice as strong as whiskey and best served warm, this sanguine version of Bloodwine is more human-friendly at 13% ABV and can be served slightly chilled or at cellar temperature (60-65 F.) The Labels Star Trek fans everywhere will recognize the label of Klingon Bloodwine, a symbol comprised of the bat’leth or “sword of honor,” a traditional Klingon weapon. The back label includes the victorious Klingon phrase: “Celebrate! Tomorrow we may die!” (yIlop! wa’IeS chaq maHegh!). Also, "Bloodwine" appears across the middle of the back label in the original Klingon language (not transposed into the Latin alphabet). The Wine The 2012 Klingon Bloodwine is a medium-bodied red blend of Malbec, Syrah and Petit Verdot from the Paso Robles AVA in California. Klingon Bloodwine can be enjoyed with grilled meats and mature cheeses, or traditional Klingon fare such as Heart of Targ. Tasting Notes from the Winemaker Rich, rustic, fruit focused and complex. Concentrated raspberry and cherry aromas. Notes of spicy vanilla oak round out the nose. On the palate, the wine is savory and rich, with dark berry flavors and ripe plum. Velvety tannins and well balanced acidity lead to a smooth, lingering finish.

3/30/2023 - Wine Of The Moment Likes this wine: 88 Points

Klingons have always been one of the top fan favorites of the Star Trek world. Whether they play the friend or foe, you know it will be a good episode. Perhaps one of the iconic drinks of their race has been the Klingon Bloodwine. The Trek world version has been described as perhaps too potent for most non-Klingons to drink but was always used to toast to a great victory. This 2018 earthly version is crafted by the E2 Family Winery using Cabernet Sauvignon and does clock in at a respectable 14.5% abv. The bottle has an interesting dark red design along with a dipped wax finish. The top of the cork has the iconic Klingon symbol along with a proverb on the side written in Klingon. Pouring this wine was a delight as it showed a deep ruby red hue with very intense aromas. Perhaps dark chocolate is the most prevalent note to this bottle, along with good acids and a very long finish. It might be tight at first, so let it breathe for an hour. This wine was created to last, so if you have extra bottles, they are keepers for sure in the cellar. Enjoy this one well, earthlings. “IwlIj jachjaj!”

Star trek wine range expands with klingon ‘bloodwine’, a year after the launch of star trek wines, the company behind its creation has expanded the range with the klingon bloodwine cabernet sauvignon and the first white wine in the line-up..

The newly-released Klingon Bloodwine

Announced in a press release in both English and Klingon, Star Trek Wines has announced the latest additions to its wine fleet.

The first new bottle in the wine range, inspired by the sci-fi Star Trek television and film franchise, is the Klingon Bloodwine 2018. Packaged in a wax-dipped bottle, it is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and produced by the E2 Family Winery in Lodi, California.

Klingon is both the name of the fictional species of humanoid that appear in Star Trek and the language which they speak.

For added “authenticity”, the creators consulted members of the KAG (Klingon Assault Group) and the KLI (Klingon Language Institute) when creating the packaging and related brand material.

Priced at US$50 a bottle, the wine is available to pre-order in the US for shipping on 17 September, the Klingon ‘Day of Honour’.

The second addition to the line-up is the United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc, a limited-edition bottling designed to accompany the United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel, which was released last year.

Packaged in numbered bottles, the wine is made from north coast Californian Sauvignon Blanc grapes in a bottle that draws design cues from uniforms worn in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and is priced at US$40 a bottle.

The range is exclusively available via startrekwines.com and was created by US lifestyle company Wines That Rock in collaboration with ViacomCBS Consumer Products. The wines are made by the E2 Family Winery as well as Château Picard in St-Estèphe.

Commenting on the release of the themed wines, Wines That Rock president, Howard Jackowitz, said: “Star Trek Wines is one of our all-time favourite projects. The collaboration between Star Trek  experts from ViacomCBS Consumer Products team, our award-winning winemakers and designers, as well as several of the world’s leading  Star Trek and Klingon experts have produced two new additions to the Official Star Trek Wines Collection that our entire company are proud of.

“Our goal is always to create great-tasting, limited edition, collectible wines that we as fans want to own and enjoy. As Klingon warriors would say – Qapla’ !”

The first wines in the range, the Château Picard Bordeaux 2016 and old vine Zinfandel, were released last year ahead of the broadcast of the latest Star Trek: Picard series.

The range was inspired by the story-line in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by British actor Patrick Stewart, comes from a family of French winemakers from La Barre in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, where they produce a futuristic Burgundy under two labels: Château Picard and Château La Barre.

However, the real Château Picard is located not in Burgundy but in Bordeaux, and is owned by négociant house Mähler-Besse. The wine, made in collaboration with the Star Trek Wines team, proved a sell-out success.

Like the new wines in the range, the Zinfandel is made in the US. The original release was made from a blend of 87% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah and 1% Syrah from Dry Creek and Russian River in Sonoma county.
