Star trek strange new worlds season 2: first look, cast, and how to catch up.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just premiered in July 2022, but there's already an official first look at season two.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just premiered in July 2022, but there's already an official first look at season two.

If you're a fan of Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) , then the newest Paramount Plus Star Trek series is made for you. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the crew of the USS Enterprise 10 years before Captain Kirk takes the helm. You get to follow a crew led by characters who made their debut in TOS - like Captain Christopher Pyke (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and they're all in outfits inspired by TOS. Strange New Worlds also forgoes the modern Star Trek season-long arcs and instead focuses on the crew investigating a new world or mystery and resolving it in an episode, just like in TOS.

Here's everything you need to know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds: What you need to know

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the crew of the USS Enterprise 10 years before Captain Kirk and the events of The Original Series (TOS). Of course, the Enterprise is on a five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. The series doesn't necessarily begin with season one, however, as the actors playing Captain Pyke, Spock, and Number One all actually make their debuts during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery before making their way aboard the USS Enterprise.

Ethan Peck's Spock in particular plays a large role in Star Trek: Discovery's second season.

The fun thing about Strange New Worlds is that the style of the show makes many types of fun Star Trek easter eggs possible. There's just a single contained story each week, with the crew of the USS Enterprise as the constant. Well, that and the awesome 1960s-inspired aesthetic.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Release date

The second season of Strange New Worlds doesn't have a release date yet, but it's expected to premiere sometime in 2023.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds: How to watch

  • Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 on Paramount Plus

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season one is available on Paramount Plus, so season two likely will be too. The streaming service starts at $4.99 per month in the US.

You can learn more about Paramount Plus in Pocket-lint's guide here .

Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Cast

You can expect most of the crew of the USS Enterprise to be back for season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Of course, there will be some new faces, and in this case, some familiar new faces. Paul Wesley is set to take on the role of a young James T. Kirk. There's also the hope of us eventually seeing a young Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the series, but there's no official casting news so far.

That being said, the shows obviously willing to recast characters from TOS, so who knows who we could see pop up in a single episode cameo?

  • Anson Mount as Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Spock
  • Jess Bush as Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley / Number One
  • Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 is a classic sci-fi adventure

As the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts today on Paramount+, one question stands above all others:

Can they do it again?

Because in the show's first season last year, Strange New Worlds helped prove to producers of Paramount+'s new-school Trek series something they should have known from the start — when you're telling stories from a nearly 60-year-old franchise, it makes more sense to embrace that legacy than to shy away from it.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' goes there, boldly

Pop Culture Happy Hour

'star trek: strange new worlds' goes there, boldly.

Fortunately, once the second season gets rolling – the first two episodes aren't quite as impressive as the next four – it's obvious the minds behind Strange New Worlds have gotten the memo. Fans get a wide range of compelling new stories, often in an adventure-of-the-week format, with lots of eye-popping special effects and cool nods to the history of these beloved characters.

New stories with classic characters

For those who aren't Trekkers, Strange New Worlds is set at a time years before James T. Kirk will take over as the Enterprise's captain – allowing the show to retell the origin stories of key figures like Spock, Nyota Uhura and Christine Chapel.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock and Majel Barrett as Number One in the original Star Trek pilot. Later, Barrett played Nurse Christine Chapel. CBS via Getty Images hide caption

A few of these characters were actually created for Star Trek 's original pilot in the mid-1960s , which NBC forced creator Gene Roddenberry to significantly rewrite, recast and reshoot. (instead, Roddenberry used the pilot footage to fuel a two-episode Trek story from the first season called "The Menagerie," featuring people who would later be reimagined in Strange New Worlds , like Capt. Christopher Pike and his Number One, now called Una Chin-Riley.)

One moment in Strange New Worlds ' new season, for example, explains that Spock learned to play the Vulcan harp — seen occasionally in the original series — after the ship's doctor recommended playing music to help the half-human, half-Vulcan character better control his emotions.

And there's a cheeky scene where Spock, in temporary command of the Enterprise, needs to come up with a cool catchphrase/command for signaling the crew to accelerate into warp speed. But the words he lands on – "I would like the ship to go. Now." – don't exactly measure up to canonical phrases like "engage" and "make it so."

Second season has a slow start

As fun as much of this storytelling can be, there is the matter of the season's first two episodes, hamstrung by a didactic storyline that wraps up the matter of Una Chin-Riley's arrest by Starfleet.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley Michael Gibson/Paramount hide caption

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley

Chin-Riley, played with steely precision by Rebecca Romijn, was nabbed at the end of last season because Starfleet learned she had been hiding her heritage as an Illyrian – a species which often genetically augments itself, which is an illegal act in the United Federation of Planets.

As her trial progresses, the series offers up a way too on-the-nose allegory to real-life issues like the U.S. military's former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" anti-LGBTQ policy. Chin-Riley turns down a deal to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced punishment, saying, "I shouldn't have to hide anymore. None of us should. I know I should have done better. I didn't stand up when I should have. I'm standing up now."

Strange New Worlds , like many Trek series, often wears its causes on its sleeve. But even for a TV show whose cast regularly looks like a Benetton ad, this felt a little ham-handed and obvious (though the actress who plays Chin-Riley's Illyrian attorney, Yetide Badaki, drops a powerful performance that is easily the best reason to watch the episode.)

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

There are a few other irritating tropes on Strange New Worlds which are common for most Trek projects, like the crewmembers who ignore orders they disagree with, and the leadership's illogical habit of sending the most senior officers on the most dangerous missions. Also, as much as I love Taxi alum Carol Kane, her addition as a screechy-voiced engineering expert with a surprising past veers dangerously — and quickly — from amusing to ridiculous.

But by the time we get to the episodes where Spock is turned into a human (yes, really), live-action versions of characters from the animated series Lower Decks appear and two characters travel back in time, it's obvious: Strange New Worlds is packed with the kind of grand, episodic science fiction adventure that was once the bedrock of great TV.

And its glorious return is most welcome.

Correction June 15, 2023

In a previous version of this story, an incorrectly punctuated sentence implied Nyota and Uhura are two different characters. Nyota Uhura is one character.

Inside the ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season Finale: Evil Gorn! Shocking Ending! And Introducing [SPOILER]!

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments for the Season 2 finale of “ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ,” currently streaming on Paramount+.

The second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” took a large number of big swings: Spock (Ethan Peck) becoming human for a time; an alternate universe James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) romancing La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in 21st century Toronto; the crossover episode with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks”; and the musical episode featuring a Klingon boy band group.

Written by executive producer Henry Alonso Myers, “Hegemony” plays like an action-packed thriller — which is partly why Myers and his fellow showrunner Akiva Goldsman decided to end the episode on a surprise cliffhanger. And yet, somehow, they also managed to include the introduction of one of the most beloved “Star Trek” characters: engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.

Myers and Goldsman talked with Variety about how they decided to bring Scotty onto “Strange New Worlds,” why the Gorn have become the Big Bad of the series and where they see the show heading for Season 3.

Henry, you and I talked last year about how the Gorn had become the central antagonistic aliens for Season 1. Did you always plan to revisit them for the Season 2 finale?

Henry Alonso Myers: We always knew we were going revisit them — the finale is just where it ended up. We were trying to do something really big and seeing the adult Gorn was a thing we knew would take time. It takes a lot of design; one of the reasons it came later in the season was we knew that we’d have a lot of work to do. It just sort of worked out as a finale.

The Gorn are a powerful threat on this show, but they’ve never been much of a factor in any iterations of “Trek” that come later in the timeline. Some of that, of course, is because as they were conceived on “TOS,” the Gorn were a little silly looking — it was just a man in a rubber suit.

Myers: It was hard to do it well. It was hard to do respectfully.

Do you intend to resolve that tension in “Strange New Worlds,” to explain why as the timeline evolves, the Gorn as a threat seem to have diminished?

Myers: Well, this is one I would like to punt to Akiva, but only because a lot of what the Gorn became for the show was a vision that he had — this was something that had not really been explored that we had an opportunity to make in a way that had never been done.

Akiva Goldsman: The Gorn, for me, were not intentionally comedic — they were just executed about as well as they could be executed at that point in the run of the show at that time. Like, it was just a bad suit — and let’s not even talk about the Metrons. But I looked at the intention, which is: scary, scary, scary, Other, Other, Other. One thing that we always do in “Star Trek” is we empathize — that’s in large part the purpose of our show. We’re kind of an empathy generator. It’s a carnival mirror on modern society.

But in our desire to express compassion first, which I think is the right desire, sometimes we forget that real monsters exist. I thought it was important for there to be real monsters in our galaxy. That doesn’t mean that 10 years, two seasons from now, we won’t be having a nice chat with the Gorn. But right now in Seasons 1 and 2 and 3, they’re the monsters. By the way, many of the other “Star Trek” antagonists began as alien, as Other — forgive the use of “alien” — but we learned to connect with them. Not so the Gorn. The Gorn are not understandable to us in this way, not relatable to us in this way. Part of our galaxy is be good, be kind, be empathetic, and also understand that evil exists, because seeing with compassion does mean you should be blind to horror. The Gorn are monsters.

How did you decide to introduce Scotty in the finale?

By introducing Scotty, you’re inevitably raising the possibility that the show will also be introducing other characters from the “TOS” era, like Bones or Sulu. Should fans expect that to happen as the show progresses?

Goldsman: The longer we stay on the air — do we still say that? — the longer we stream, the longer we do whatever it is we do to let people watch us, the more likely it becomes. Given our druthers — because Henry and I are both greedy and gluttons for punishment — we’d go right into the TOS era and see what happens. So, if we’re around long enough, sure.

Myers: The one thing I will say is — I try to respect everyone’s approach to this. But we’re not telling the story of who they are [in the future], we’re telling the story of who they are now. They don’t know who they’re going to be. That is the unique opportunity of our show that allows us to tell these stories in ways that they haven’t been told before. That’s the fun of it for us. If we meet other people, they will surprise you. That’s all I’ll say.

This season took some major risks. What other boundaries are you considering pushing for Season 3?

Goldsman: We’re going to keep going. We genre hop. So where we haven’t been, we will try to go. Henry’s watchwords for Season 2 were, “Let’s do Season 1, just bigger and better.” That’s become the truth of Season 3. We’re always doing the thing that we do best, which is secretly just a lot of relationship stories in space. We’ll keep unfolding those hopefully in ways that are different, in the same way that the tones of our episodes will be different. But yeah, ambition will taper off only when we can’t figure out a thing to do we haven’t done before.

Myers: The joy of doing the show — Akiva and I spent a lot of time on this — is trying to come up with something really great and cool and different for our actors. The more challenging stuff you bring them, the harder they will work. We want to bring them great material so that they will continue to do incredible things.

Season 3 for “Strange New Worlds” was announced in March , well after production on Season 2 had ended. How confident were you that you’re going to be able to resolve this cliffhanger?

Myers: The best way to approach this is with a deep sense of confidence. We were very upfront with all of our folks internally about what we were doing. They were very supportive of it. We wanted it to be a surprise. I remember how the [“Star Trek: The Next Generation” cliffhanger episode] “The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1″ made me feel. That was what we wanted to revisit for the audience, to really surprise them.

Star Trek: Discovery

Two Star Trek shows received their orders for new seasons Tuesday.

Paramount+ has renewed flagship series Star Trek: Discovery for a fifth season and, more unusually, renewed the upcoming spinoff Strange New Worlds for a second season before the first season debuts.

In addition, the streamer announced premiere dates for Discovery , Strange New Worlds and season two of Picard .

Discovery’ s fourth season will return from its winter break with new episodes starting Thursday, Feb. 10. Picard will launch Thursday, March 3, and then Strange New Worlds will have its series debut Thursday, May 5.

The scheduling strategy will keep fresh live-action Trek episodes on Thursday night from early February into the summer.

On the animated front, Star Trek: Lower Decks will return this summer for its third season of 10 episodes, with the show renewed for a fourth season. Star Trek: Prodigy is currently airing its debut season on Thursday nights.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow Star Trek into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount+, we’re keeping our word,” said Alex Kurtzman, architect and executive producer of the Star Trek franchise. “Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build Trek’s  next phase of programming for years to come.”

Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike as he leads the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before Captain Kirk. The show is billed as a return to the classic planet-of-the-week space exploration format of the original Star Trek series. It also stars Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are co-showrunners of the CBS Studios series.

REVIEW – Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Steelbook

James Amey

Following hot on the heels of Star Trek Picard’s much-loved final season. We jumped back in time to the 23rd Century. To a time when many of those ships seen at the Starfleet Museum were still flying about, and some hadn’t even been built yet! I am of course referring to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2. A season that decided to throw out quite a few rule books, and included many, many, moments that delighted fans. Along with some other moments that are quite controversial. Some of those moments may finally, with time, dethrone Tuvix as the ‘favourite Trekkie Dinner Table debate’.

  • Strange New Worlds Season 2 4K UHD is available now from Amazon

But the Strange New Worlds Season 2 episodes themselves aren’t what this review is about. If you want to read our thoughts on them you can check out our Strange New Worlds Archives . What this review is about is the 4K UHD physical Steelbook, which was just released.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Artwork and Packaging

After the amazing Drew Struzan-inspired art for Star Trek: Picard Season 3. I think anybody would struggle not to feel slightly let down by Strange New Worlds Season 2 Key Art. Instead of an artistic ensemble piece on the 4K Steelbook edition’s cover, it’s simply a slightly stylized headshot of Anson Mount ‘s Captain Pike. All the character covers are taken straight from the publicity shots for the prior season. The Steelbook boxset also includes 4 other magnetic character covers. So there is a positive here in that you can attach your favorite character cover to your Steelbook.

Sadly though, it’s a much more interesting idea than execution. Unless you plan to display your Strange New Worlds Season 2 Steelbook prominently and change it up regularly, it feels more like a gimmick than a genuine value addition to the box set. It also feels especially low effort given that they went to the effort to have custom artwork of the characters made up for the Subspace Rhapsody poster. This has been delegated to a fold-out paper poster that doesn’t feel particularly high quality either.

The back of the Steelbook, confusingly, looks amazing. It has a lovely image of the Enterprise saucer coming into the frame, while the silhouette of the ship is cast in shadow on colorful clouds below. While this is also one of the original publicity shots, it just feels a bit more… original. Now, I know I’m a ship enthusiast so I’m a bit biased here. But surely this is a much more suitable statement art piece for the front? Once again, we have no disk artwork (although these are black, rather than just reflective like the Blu-rays) and the interior artwork is character posters again. This also highlights that a significant number of characters didn’t get a magnet. A lot of strange choices here…

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Technical Information

The main presentation is on 4K UHD, the highest quality Star Trek has released to date and exclusive (at least in the realms of television/streaming) to Strange New Worlds . Like other shows though it’s in the 2:39:1 letterbox format. That’s where the positives in terms of technical specs end. After the veritable smörgåsbord of language and subtitle options for the Picard Season 3 release. Strange New Worlds Season 2 is also, unfortunately, a step down in this department.

People who speak the show’s native English language and love the increased visual fidelity of 4K UHD may be pleased with this release. I doubt, however, that it will have the same reception in many overseas territories. The only DTS-HD audio track (like Picard ) in this release is US English. After that, we have 5:1 Dolby Digital audio for French-Parisian and German speakers. That’s it. Subtitles are the same. US English, Parisian French, and German. The Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, and Spanish subtitle options (again present on the Picard Season 3 sets), are absent. For a franchise built around ideological notions of breaking down barriers and bringing people together, this is another strange choice. I guess the diplomatic way to state my thoughts on this would be to describe the options as ‘subpar’.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Special Features – Disk One

The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 release is remarkably light on extras. The first additional or deleted scene is an extended sequence taken from the season opener – The Broken Circle . This extended sequence takes place on Starbase One. Shortly after (in this reviewer’s opinion) one of the greatest shots of the Enterprise in Star Trek television history. I am of course talking about that undocking and then vertical fly-off!

The scene itself opens with a (somewhat fascinating) unfinished CG shot of Starbase One. The scene then cuts to the (completed VFX) interior shot, where we see an unnamed Captain reporting the Enterprise’s course trajectory to Admiral April ( Adrian Holmes ). We then see a fellow admiral (named Si or Psi) confront Pike about letting them go. The dialogue highlights that they can recall Enterprise remotely and that the ship’s presence could potentially escalate hostilities. It also gives some exposition about the current state of the Federation and the threats against it. The actors with dialogue in this sequence are unfortunately uncredited (aside from April, obviously).

It’s a shame this sequence was cut as it builds out the current state of Federation tensions and priorities nicely, while not feeling drawn out or overly long. If kept in the episode, I think it would have served as a nice epilogue to the Enterprise escape sequence.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Special Features – Disk One Continued

The other scenes on the disk are from episode 3 Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow . The first is a short fun exchange between Kirk ( Paul Wesley ) and La’an ( Christina Chong ) after they pick out the same outfit. Instead of it just being a comedic beat, La’an prompts Kirk to change stating that the clothes ‘look better on her’.

The second is an extended version of the scene where Kirk sets out to hustle some Chess players, featuring some dialogue with his first opponent. The screened version is a straight cut into the musical montage. The third and final scene from this episode picks up at Pelia’s store. After Kirk and La’an find the watch and move to leave, there’s a short comedic moment as Pelia asks them for payment (playing on their earlier shopping troubles). As the watch has value again now!

You can tell why these moments were cut as they don’t provide value to the narrative beyond a couple of humanizing beats in an episode that already goes out of its way to provide La’an with some much-needed character development. But never the less, it’s fun to see the ‘full versions’ of these scenes before they hit the editor’s room floor.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Special Features – Disk Two

Disk Two is similarly light on special features with the only inclusions being deleted and extended scenes again. Episode 5 ‘ Charades ‘ has a fun exchange between ‘human’ Spock and Una in the bar, trying the bar snacks. Spock ( Ethan Peck ) makes some unfortunate combinations, much to his almost immediate disgust and then regret.

Episode 6 ‘ Lost in Translation ‘ has a corridor conversation between Una ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Pike. As an interesting observation, they haven’t removed the sounds of them walking so we get to hear what these scenes sound like before post-production! That aside, while you can tell this scene was cut for time, it features some great character-building between Pike, Una, and Pelia ( Carol Kane ). Pike references Una’s managerial fervor while assigning Pelia to the station. All actors involved do a wonderful job using their body language to hint at the tension between the two women (that boils over later on)! For cosplayers, there’s also a good glimpse at a series of uniform variations here too!

The second cut scene is a slightly extended version of the second Xenoanthropology lab sequence where Sam Kirk ( Dan Jeannotte ) presents his theory. The cut content opens with the Kirk brothers – Sam and Jim – verbally sparring before Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ) puts her foot down. After this, the scene plays out as it did in the episode. Plus point, we get a more obvious shot of Sam stealing that cookie!

Special Features – Disk Two Continued

Finally, for ‘ Lost in Translation ‘ we also see an extended version of Una and Pelia’s scene in the shuttle. There’s some additional dialogue that was cut from the conversation. So it plays a bit differently and gives Pelia some much-needed extra screen time. It’s a shame it was cut!

One of the highlights from the season was the Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover episode ‘Those Old Scientists’ . It also has an extended scene, but this very much feels as though it was added for the sake of having a deleted scene from this episode. It’s a tiny extension of the scene where the Orions steal the portal. It shows Pike, La’an, and Boimler ( Jack Quaid ) beaming down to visually observe the portal has been stolen.

The first of the controversial ‘Under The Cloak of War’ (episode 8) deleted scenes features a cut-off meeting between M’Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ) and Chapel ( Jess Bush ) on the moon of J’Gal. Chapel highlights that they may have miscatalogued supplies. M’Benga encourages her to rest, to which she states she prefers to stay busy. The scene ends with them walking off together while M’Benga tells Chapel that he can already tell he’s going to like her. It’s sweet, but ultimately redundant considering the relationship we’ve already seen between these characters.

Special Features – Disk Two continued

The second deleted scene is one that I really wish they had kept in the episode. It features M’Benga, Chapel, and Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ) at the bar after the dinner scene letting off some steam. While watching the episode I felt it was missing sequences like this. Scenes showing characters that had been pushed to emotional extremes finally getting to unwind, outside of sparring matches of course. It’s nice to see that while writing and filming the episode those involved clearly had this same idea. So it’s such a shame that it didn’t make the cut.

The final deleted scene is between Pike and M’Benga in Sickbay, where Pike expresses regret at inviting them to the dinner. He makes it clear that M’Benga doesn’t have to go to the match. This again is a much-needed scene acknowledging the mistakes that the characters made throughout the episode.

In this case, it feels as though this one was cut because it would make the audience less sympathetic to M’Benga. An understandable move, but one I wish they hadn’t taken. Sometimes it is just as important to give the main characters flaws. It gives them more depth and therefore reasons for the audience to empathise with them.

Special Features – Disk Three

Have you been reading this Strange New Worlds Season 2 Steelbook review wondering where the special features of this release were? Don’t worry, I was thinking the same! It turns out they’re all on Disk Three. They even have a dedicated menu rather than being sub-options for individual episodes.

There is a deleted scene on this disk though! I also imagine it’ll be the one that most are interested in. It’s the alternate version of the Klingon sequence from Subspace Rhapsody where the Klingons sing an Opera, instead of K[lingon]-Pop. I won’t go into details, but I think that they made the right decision. The scene certainly left fans with quite the impression and meme potential.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Of the special features themselves, the first focuses on props used in Season 2, with a particular focus on the Vulcan lute recreated from Star Trek: The Original Series . As well as other Vulcan items, such as the teapot used in ‘Charades’. Much to the delight of Star Trek prop makers everywhere it turns out this was 3D printed in resin and then dyed!

Special Features – Disk Three Continued

The second feature focuses on costumes. A lot of great cosplay references are in here for those so inclined. The feature goes through costumes seen in the show in chronological order of appearance, with a particular focus on those used in ‘Among the Lotus Eaters’ . On a personal note, it’s quite jarring to see the reverence that those behind the scenes have for the aesthetics and props used in The Original Series . While I can appreciate it, I also question their odd decisions to omit Discovery-style uniforms. Later in the season, these would have been appropriate to see.

We also have ‘The Gorn’ featuring, taking a look in detail, at the development of the Gorn appearance and costumes. Rather amusingly this feature is a victim of the menu font, with the capital R being very similar to the capital A. Making it look like a feature about the ‘GOAN’ at a glance.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

My favorite of these features, as a lover of the musical episode, is ‘Singing in Space’ . This, as the title implies, looks at the production and development of Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 9 ‘ Subspace Rhapsody’ . It shares some fun peaks at the cast during rehearsals, as well as all the in-depth details.

Final Feature and Conclusion

The final feature ‘Exploring New Worlds’ baffles me a bit. First, is the title. Given that we didn’t actually explore many new worlds this season. Second, is that it covers all of the episodes chronologically except ‘ Subspace Rhapsody ‘, which has a dedicated feature. It seems that it would have been better (as with Picard ) to split these focus segments into one for each episode, putting them on the corresponding disks. This would allow viewers to jump into a deeper exploration while questions about each episode are fresh in their minds. Where they may have forgotten the context of earlier episodes and answered questions themselves by taking a look online by the time they reach this feature at the end.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 is available on Amazon

Ultimately, the Steelbook box set is… Cromulent. The art is eye-catching, if unimaginative. The episodes themselves all look superb in their (as uncompressed as we’ll ever get them outside the original masters) 4K UHD HDR glory. There is a good variety of special features and extended/deleted/alternate scenes for fans of the show to dig their teeth into. These especially work for those who are prop or cosplay-inclined!

I can’t however, bring myself to rave about it too much due to the lack of language/subtitle options, and other missing features. Picard Season 3 showed it can be done. Strange New Worlds is now seen by many as the new ‘flagship’ show of the Star Trek Universe (especially now that Discovery is ending). Accessibility for the global fanbase is important, and Paramount needs to do better going forward. It’s absurd that a premiere show in 2023 on 4K Blu-ray has fewer language options than the DVD releases of The Next Generation over 20 years ago.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Gets New Science Lab… And 2025 Release

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

In addition to updates on Section 31 and Academy as well as Star Trek feature films , the big cover piece in this week’s Variety also had some tidbits about the third season of Strange New Worlds , which is still in production.

Frakes mystery episode (and puppets?)… coming in 2025

Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will continue the show’s style of mixing up different genres. According to the Variety feature on Star Trek, this will include an episode “framed as a Hollywood murder mystery,” directed by Jonathan Frakes, who describes it as “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.”

Season 2 ramped up the genre-hopping style of the show, but co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman says he is still not sure if there is a limit. From Variety :

“At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” Goldsman says with an impish smile. ‘Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!'”

It sounds like Goldsman was just spitballing ideas, so maybe those are just season 4 possibilities. Season 2 saw a crossover with Lower Decks (directed by Frakes) that mixed live-action and animation, as well as a musical episode. While the mention of Muppets may have been a joke, is it such a stretch? It can be argued that Strange New Worlds followed in the footsteps of the acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode from 2001, so why not follow the Buffy spinoff Angel, which did a puppet episode titled “ Smile Time ” in 2004?

The double strikes of 2023 caused a seven-month delay in the start of filming, which finally began in December. As of last week, they were just starting to shoot episode 7 . Production for the 10-episode season should be wrapped up in mid-May. As expected, it looks like we won’t see the series return until next year. A throwaway line in the Variety piece noted that Season 3 will arrive in 2025.

Spock’s new lab

Season 3 is introducing a new set for the USS Enterprise: a science lab, described as “a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team.”

Here is the first look:

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

Ethan Peck on the new science lab set (Marni Grossman/Paramount+)

Spock is studying a “Chimera Blossum,” according to the screens behind him. As pointed out by Jörg Hillebrand on Twitter/X , Spock’s red environmental suit is a modernized version of the one he wore in the TOS episode “The Naked Time.”

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

The Variety piece also had some fun behind-the-scenes details, like how the pathway outside the virtual AR wall set is dotted with posters from the Star Trek: The Next Generation holodeck, along with the words “Enter Holodeck” in classic Trek type.  Ethan Peck talks about those signs and working with the AR wall:

“I want to take one of those home with me,” Peck says. Does the AR wall also affect him? “I don’t really get disoriented by it. Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”

Series star Anson Mount also weighed in on working with the AR Wall, noting the way images move across the wall “make no sense” when you are inside the set and it can be disorienting, with the actor pro tip to “focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.” AR Wall dizziness aside, Mount remains his enthusiastic self, even into his fourth season of Trek (counting Discovery season 2):

I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.’

I think most of us assumed it wouldn’t come out until 2025 but looking forward to it.

I do assume Goldsman is just joking about the Muppets but you never know with this guy lol.

The angel puppet ep was pretty good. Is this new set a redress of a past bridge?

Never seen Angel but now I’m intrigued lol.

I’m pretty sure that’s a new set.

The Angel puppet episode is hilarious.

It’s a very funny episode!

Ok now have find it and watch it! Thanks guys.

Would I feel lost on the story itself?

I’ve maybe seen a dozen ANGEL eps, and I think this one is a standalone pretty much, though some of the supporting players may come off a little … strange.

I won’t hold my breath for an episode where the Cookie Monster has a cameo…

Normally I would figure cookie monster is a reference to Shatner’s weight, but after seeing him on Kimmel I have to admit he seems to be in much slimmer shape.

Naah, I wouldn’t do that. Especially after just recently giving him mucho respect for THE INTRUDER! The mention of puppets and Muppets above reminded me of an incident from my pre-kmart era as a young filmmaker, when one of my actors had to climb with a flashlight through part of an interior ship set, to get to something that needed repair in the story. What my friend (in 1975) didn’t know, is that I had secreted a Cookie Monster puppet deep inside the bowels of the ship (set). What ensued was shock and fright, followed by laughter, shaking walls, and a shouted “Damn you, Kevin!” coming from the back of the set. I have a couple of pics of that, somewhere.

That’a a good gag. On a somewhat meaner note, I have to mention that in order to get a shocked reaction out of Paul Vallerga (you might remember him as my roommate at the time I was first making CRITICAL ORBIT, as the Devil in MisJudgment Day — that movie we shot in a suite at the LeBaron hotel — or as Felix Leiter in YOU ONLY DIE THRICE), I revealed to him that his favorite actor Robert Shaw had just died while the camera was rolling. This was low on a ‘Jackie, your dog just got hit by a car’ level, but it did work, though for a movie (pre-Vokar) you probably never saw called CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD REICH, made for my German class in high school but later redubbed into English for a contest that channel 54 was having. We used whipped cream instead of mashed potatoes and shot the UFO arrival at Cinema 150 theater, which is of course where the film debuted months earlier.

Oh sure, I remember Vallerga! He was the very serious guy who thought he was better than the rest of us, right? I do vaguely recall seeing YOU ONLY DIE THRICE, a long time ago. And I can recall doing some shooting for your films CRITICAL ORBIT and STARS. We need our own bbs…

I was going to mention my film MAN OUT OF TIME, but it’s a MOOT point. *smirk*

He did have some genuine talent — he wrote the original version of MisJudgement Day, called STAYIN’ ALIVE, then retitled GOD, SATAN & SIDNEY CZINOWITZ, plus another short script called SOUL OF DARKNESS that preceded BLADE by quite a few years, that was one we came pretty close to shooting, and I think you were going to play the grieving and soon to be dead husband of a female victim of the main vamp. I actually storyboarded the thing — yeah, the images were as illegible as my handwriting and printing, but they worked for me — but we couldn’t figure out a way to flood a culvert where the climax was going to take place. Also, there was potential for disaster, as we’re talking night shooting and lights plus water.

But Vallerga always felt he had to scoop stuff in from other people’s work — some steals from MORK for the first one, some steals from STAR TREK in SOUL, right out of AMOK TIME, less than subtle, easily recognizable. He has managed to afford to keep living in the bay area (maybe he inherited his folks’ place in Los Gatos?), I looked him up, and he teaches drama/stage stuff at some ritzy pay-to-go high school, so he stayed true to his roots (although those are his only roots, he looked balder than Patrick Stewart in the image I found.)

Don’t know if I shared this here or not, but one night when we were shooting CRITICAL ORBIT in my upstairs bedroom (standing in for auxililary control on the ship), Vallerga was walking home and looked up at our apartment. We had a bank of four 600 watt lights that were being flickered, and it put such a strain on the local circuits that lights for the entire building encompassing adjoining apartments was strobing on and off. Might have looked cooler than what we were shooting inside! (we were probably doing the electrocution of the John Nelson character Martin Hansard, which was awkward because he refused to lay down on the floor, so we had to shoot everything at right angles with him ‘lying down’ against the wall of the set.)

My main memory of Nelson is when he “kindly” did one little scene in one of my short films in the garage/studio, with an alien (played by my dad) strangling him. Oh, how I wanted to take dad’s place for the closeup! Yeah, N was pretty humorless, unless it was at my expense or yours. BTW, wasn’t I a character in C.O. for a shot or two in the dining room? A shot where my line was followed by your puppy making a fart sound or whatever underneath the table?

If I’d actually finished CO, you’d’ve probably been the fifth-billing character, as you would have had a bunch of scenes down in the ship’s power bay (dominated by a pair of sunglass racks with pulsed fluorescents inside, masquerading as towering glowing energy cores, looking a lot like something out of THE MATRIX 15 years later.)

The only scene I actually shot showing the power bay was when, in desperation, I cast my mother as the ship’s soon-to-be-late captain. It actually looked really good — we were on what was supposed to be a ledge, and the sunglass racks were only a few feet away, but I had blue plastic stretched between us and the racks, which created a veil of atmostphere making them look like they were off in the distance. But mom was even hammier than I was, and she kind of came off like Grace Zabriskie (Laura Palmer’s mom) when she played the captain of the Hesperus in GALAXY OF TERROR (the movie where Jim Cameron electrically shocked slugs to get them to ‘perform.’)

That puppy, Peanut, was probably 8 or 10 years old, but yeah, it did fart right after you delivered a dramatic line, ‘power level zero in 15 minutes.’ It sounded like a bass music stinger! Sort of like what Goldsmith did when Shatner is spelling v … g … e … r – vger!

I just thought Peanut was very young from his/her size, which I recall as pretty small. Making sets is one thing I can’t do these days, due to my lack of wood-working tools and my leg and feet neuropathy pain issues. So we are shooting in existing exteriors and interiors. I miss that 2-car garage studio I had to make films in, back in San Jose. That was great!

My folks actually had a pro portrait done of Peanut when he was about 15 (how he lived that long with the way they fed him — often being dropped whole frozen hamburgers — I’ll never know) that was printed at about 16×20 and must have been much bigger lthan life-sized. They got another chihauhau, Shakespeare, after that, but it was more like THE ENEMY WITHIN version, as it snapped at and bit everybody, whereas Peanut practically invented the ‘trust fall’ he was so sweet.

I still remember the first time Peanut did that for me when I was house-sitting. He climbed up in my lap, then flung himself backwards, apparently expecting me to catch him. It was a very AlanRickman/HansGruber/DieHard moment, seeing his startled expression as he fell (In fact, every time I remember that funny but painful moment, it is with the Michael Kamen score for that film superimposed on the moment as he falls.)

My tolerance for these “Big Swings” directly correlates to the low number of episodes these guys have to tell actual sci fi stories. If we’re talking 24 episodes, I’d be a lot more tolerant of these show runners and writers desires to do other genres. Here’s an idea… why don’t they go get a job where they can actually write for a puppet based show? I’m anxious to see some writers that actually want to play in the world of Star Trek, not shoehorn Trek into something it’s not. This is an unserious writing staff. So over it.

Thanks for describing why I don’t watch SNW.

There’s plenty of precedent for the crew of starships named Enterprise encountering powerful beings who can warp reality. If they do a Muppet episode, hopefully it involves a bratty near-omnipotent kid playing with the crew by transforming them into puppets. At the end, after reality has been restored to normal, we could hear the voice of John de Lancie telling the kid to leave the humans alone for a little while; he has checked up on them in a couple hundred years and wants them to have some time to mature before then. [As long as the kid never identifies themselves as a Q, but maybe calls themselves Quentin or Queen, it wouldn’t break canon.]

Yeah, with modern TV production and the strike, I anticipated a 2025 release date, although they could have done what they did one year with Discovery and given us the first 5 episodes later this year and the next 5 early next year, but I suspect the Section 31 movie will drop later this year and they are trying to not “oversaturate” the Star Trek available at once, apparently believing that too much content is their problem rather than too little great content. Ah well. Strange New Worlds is worth waiting for, so here I am…. waiting. :)

Well hopefully there isn’t a super long production gap between the filming of S3 and the filming of S4. I realize post-production takes the longest, but hopefully cast and crew will take a shorter break to compensate.

I think that was the only possibility.

Maybe!’”

Can SNW do gimmicks? Sure! Impish smile, indeed.

I don’t mind them as long as they are good but yeah I was very mixed on the musical and pray they never do it again.

The musical episode had some good scenes but it wasn’t my favorite either. Although, I do admire their willingness to try new things. I am hoping the addition of the science set means we might actually get them visiting some strange new worlds. Those haven’t been as plentiful as I would like with this show.

Definitely agree about the musical.

I actually liked it more than I thought I would. It was fun and obviously creative but I have only watched it once when it aired.. I still have zero desire to watch it again.

And yes the criticism I and others had about season 2 is the complete lack of any real exploration. I just don’t understand that you know 90% of your audience watch the show for this reason, you call your show Strange New Worlds to emphasize it and yet only spend 1 or 2 episodes on It.

It doesn’t have to be the whole season or even half but should be more than 1 or 2.

Now, now. They explored Vermont and the Great White North.

The episode was technically sound, and I enjoyed it as an aside. I wish they had kept it non canonical though. I despise the efforts to explain it and place it as an actual event. It’s just not believable.

What’s odd is that TV shows usually pull this sort of stuff when they’re in their sixth or seventh season and getting desperate for ideas.

I think it’s because they don’t have any decent Sci Fi writers on the show that could elevate the exploration theme that the show is supposed to be about with it’s title Strange New Worlds. Instead we get awful writing for it’s characters, weak sit com and gimmick shows. Unfortunately as season 2 was probably a success we will get more of more nonsense rather than quality Sci Fi writing or decent ideas. Also why have new ideas when you just take TOS canon and basically walk all over and do what you like with it.

That is why TOS was great, they had actual science fiction writers writing the scripts.

Yeah, could be. I like to think that every writer has at least one good sci-fi idea in them, it just depends if they’re allowed to use it. I mean, it could be an order coming down from the top that these shows need to take “big swings” in terms of gimmicks and nostalgia and so forth to get as many subscribers as possible. But who knows with these things.

Order coming down from the top or not it’s pretty mediocre rubbish being dished out. The fact that people are lapping this up worries me. Forget sci fi what about character growth as there was actually zero in season 2 unless you think romances with zero substance is a good thing in Star Trek. It does make me laugh that Discovery gets absolutely slaughtered here but people think SNW is good story telling and character growth (which it is certainly none of the above). Why because it has recast legacy characters? Older Star Trek did very good episodic and sometimes really good sci fi to boot episodes. SNW season 2 is a mish mash on nonsense episodes and very shallow poor writing even for a sit com series. You know The Orville did it much better than this if you like that sit com vibe. Nah this is not good Star Trek and if the Academy series is anything like this , Star Trek is going nowhere. Just look what we have to look forward to this and another mindless Star Trek action flick 😞

I’ve seen a copy of their master plan for the gimmick episode per season.

S1 – Fantasy. S2 – Musical. S3 – Muppets. S4 – Gameshow. S5 – Sitcom. S6 – Anime. S7 – Bollywood S8 – Mockumentary. S9 – Whodunnit? S10 – It was all a Holodeck program.

Season 2 actually had 4 gimmick episodes for me. 1) Doctor and nurse go John Wick on us 2) Spock becomes human and acts like a complete idiot 3) Let’s start with a cartoon and then turn it into live action and then back to a cartoon again. I can’t say much more but ffs 4) Disney high School Musical with some nonsensical reason for it all. And wow that is nearly half a season of gimmicks lol. Season 1 had potential and only 2 gimmick episodes the fairytale one and the silly Spock brain swap one. Hopefully season 3 doesn’t follow this trend with 6 gimmick episodes 😟 Is this what Star Trek has become.

lol! Im with you, dude.. 10 episodes a season, and they want to fill it with more side projects than actual Star Trek and Sci Fi.

I CALLED IT. GO LOOK AT THE COMMENTS ON THAT LAST ARTICLE ABOUT SNW I SAID IT WAS PUPPETS

Oh, it will happen…..

So it’s your fault then, thanks.

Jonathan Frakes is an amazing director. His best work is FC and S3 Picard. I often wondered what NEM would have looked like with Frakes instead of Baird.

I think “The Offspring” is his best television episode. Yes he’s an amazing director and look forward to more of his work.

I’d take both The Drumhead and Cause and Effect from TNG (and both of his parts 2 from DS9, come to think of it.) But The Offspring is very good.

I consider FC the best-directed of any ST feature, and yes, NEM might have been a wee bit better! ;)

There is a banquet hall in The San Fernando Valley that has a pool in the floor like the new Science Lab set. That one has koi fish.

there is a resturant near my town that has a glass floor and you can see the micro brewery below the main floor making the beers they serve

My guess is that is Cetacean Ops!!!

Too long of a wait for the return of my favorite show. It’s good to have stuff to look forward to, I guess.

It’s funny to see that the shower curtain environmental suit got a modern update. It looks good.

At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “

Yes, Star Trek!

Ok lets spitball potential episode ideas since Goldsman is so fond of doing it: I am thinking a Trek erotic thriller or a body horror episode directed by David Cronenberg.

That sounds awesome! In S2, they talked about big swings, but took zero risks. A Cronenberg style episode would be a big swing and something new.

I was even thinking that they should get Cronenberg to direct it since he is part of the franchise as an actor, maybe they could pay him a bit more to get him to direct.

“ they talked about big swings, but took zero risks.”

Damn…

Now that it’s confirmed we are in a separate timeline from TOS, I’m on board with whatever they go with – and will likely skip any Muppet episode.

When was that confirmed?

The episode with Khan basically said it. They said that history has been modified numerous times, which is why the Eugenics Wars (from SNW’s perspective) didn’t actually happen in the 90s. Since Trek deals with time travel by creating timelines whenever there’s a change, it means SNW is not in the same timeline as TOS.

This ^, thank you, Chris.

2025!?!?!?! The people in charge of these shows SEEMS like they do everything in their power to ruin them. There has been so many shows that I’ve lost interest in because of these ridiculous long waits between seasons.

Post-production takes a LONG time…

I think we can give them a break this year, I mean the strikes are the big reason for delays, now if the delayed seasons keep happening then I agree!

Who knows if Paramount will exist next year as an independent company?

Mr. Mount is really a good guy.

If it’s Muppets using puppets like Farscape did, or real Yoda from TESB, go for it. I’ll watch. Particularly if it’s like the TOS small birdlike creatures named Korob and Sylvia… or fake Balok… or other TOS examples. Trek already has had puppetry since the beginning.

star trek new worlds 2 temporada

We know when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is coming or more importantly, when it's not

S tar Trek: Strange New Worlds has largely been positively received by the fandom. There are issues with the show, as there are with any form of entertainment, but for the most part it's a hit with fans new and old. Considering that's been hard to pull off with the modern slate of shows, that says something about the quality and reach of the content.

It's been a pleasure to watch and review the show, and the excitement for season three is at an all-time high, especially with how season two ended. Having the Enterprise forced to decide to let innocent people die or start a costly war with the Gorn is truly a harrowing moment in the show and one that will have huge repricussions.

Hopefully, they don't do a cop-out, like have the Klingons attack the Gorn or something that wasn't alluded to, but we'll see how that situation is resolved in season three of the show. Sadly, we now know when the show will debut, or more specifically when it won't; namely this year.

The writer's and actors strike really derailed the filming process for Star Trek and caused many properties to be delayed significantly. This includes Strange New Worlds, who despite seeing their season two finale come to a head in August of 2023, fans shouldn't expect the show anytime soon.

According to Variety , the third season of Strange New Worlds is tentatively set for 2025. Not quarter one, or quarter two of the year (Jan-March/April-June), just 2025. This is a strong sign that fans will be waiting for possibly two full years for the resolution to the cliffhanger of season two. It's always possible that the show gets a January or February 2025 release date, but considering the show won't end its shooting schedule until May, and then you have months of CGI to put into the show, it could be a full 24-months between the end of season two and the start of season three.
