Classical music of European origin can be heard in Star Trek episodes and movies on various occasions.
The following list contains all pieces that we could identify, ordered by the name of the composer. All music is either performed by the characters or it is a recording played by the computer. Background music is not taken into account.
Notes on audio files We have included a public domain or Creative Commons licensed recording wherever one was available. The OGG files can be played in most browsers with HTML5 support (the notable exception being iOS/Safari). The audio files are stored in a password-protected directory. You can start the players and/or download all OGG files after logging in, with user name "guest" and Riker's middle name as password (case-sensitive) . Note that some browsers may have "enhanced" security settings that will not display the password hint (Chrome, Safari) or that will not start the player and only allow to download the OGG files (IE).
Unidentified Classical Music
There are still pieces of classical music heard in Star Trek that have not yet been identified:
- The music box melody played by Janet Brooks's music box in TNG: "The Loss"
- The cello piece that is played on Barclay's request to calm him down in TNG: "Realm of Fear"
Original Music
The following compositions were created especially for use in an episode and are not classical in a narrow sense.
TOS: Requiem for Methuselah
Spock plays a waltz on the piano that he recognizes as an unknown work of Johannes Brahms. Flint, the only inhabitant of the planet, claims that he actually was Brahms (and several other historical figures, including Methuselah, Solomon, Alexander, Lazarus, Merlin and Leonardo da Vinci). In the real world, the waltz was composed by Ivan Ditmars especially for this episode and is named "Pseudo Brahms Esq.".
TNG: Where No One Has Gone Before
The classical ballet music we can hear when the ensign hallucinates that she dances (and Picard walks by) was composed especially for the episode too. The composer is Ron Jones , and he named it "Waltz of the Chocolate Donut".
TNG: Elementary, Dear Data
The violin melody played by Data as Sherlock Holmes on the holodeck at the beginning of this episode was composed by Dennis McCarthy and is called "Sherlock Tones".
Harry Kim plays a piece he calls "Echoes of the Void" on his clarinet while the ship is in the "Void", a region devoid of stars in VOY: "Night". We can hear only a few notes, and most likely this is another original piece.
VOY: Latent Image
The piece of piano music that Kathryn Janeway listens to in her quarters while reading La Vita Nuova in VOY: "Latent Image" was composed and performed by Paul Baillargeon especially for this episode: "...So I wrote something that was like Chopin and we recorded it at the end of the session. They pulled out the big grand piano and I just played it." .
National anthems
Parts of the American National Anthem (The Star-Spangled Banner) can be heard in TOS: "The Omega Glory" when the American flag is brought in. Parts of the French National Anthem (La Marseillaise) are played when the crew runs into Q's Napoleonic creatures for the first time in TNG: "Hide and Q". Both pieces are only background music and remain unnoticed by the characters.

An illusory string quartet
A string quartet was a musical ensemble composed of four string instruments, typically two violins , one viola , and one cello . The term "string quartet" could also refer to a piece written for such a group. The ensemble was commonly used in the genre of European classical music from Earth .
In 2364 a string quartet, hallucinated by a crewmember , performed Mozart 's " Eine kleine Nachtmusik ". ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ")
In 2366 a string quartet featuring Lieutenant Commander Data on violin and Miles O'Brien on cello performed in the USS Enterprise -D 's Ten Forward . ( TNG : " The Ensigns of Command ")
Later that year, Data and three other officers performed in a string quartet for visiting Ambassador Sarek . ( TNG : " Sarek ")
In 2375 , a string quartet performed at the Evora diplomatic banquet held on board the USS Enterprise -E . ( Star Trek: Insurrection )

Morton feldman, string quartet, the group for contemporary music naxos 8.559190 ddd 78:35.
"It's life, Jim, but not as we know it." That catch-phrase from the old Star Trek TV series applies to Morton Feldman's String Quartet (1979) rather well. Indeed, to hear it attentively is to confront something alien – something that asks us to meet it on its home planet and not ours. In fact, Feldman, when discussing what led up to his writing the String Quartet the way that he did, used the analogy of "watching some bugs on a slide, and […] just watching how I feel."
The String Quartet ushered in a period in which Feldman experimented with so-called "long pieces." Compared to later works from this period, the single-movement String Quartet is rather terse; much longer ones were to follow. (Wags might refer to it as a "no movement" work, however.) Originally, the Quartet received the Cage-like nickname of "100 Minutes" – an allusion to the length of the performance at the 1980 première. That the Group for Contemporary Music's performance is some twenty percent shorter should not be a source of concern. What Feldman was aiming for, it appears, was a piece that would alter one's perception of time, and (again) for the attentive listener, the String Quartet does just that.
So what does it sound like? It is mostly quiet – the musicians play using mutes throughout – and almost completely unhurried in its progress. Feldman's strategy is to create a little "quantum" of several notes, and then to repeat it, vary it, and move on to the next quantum. Sometimes an idea heard earlier will return as a sort of refrain, and when it does, it is much more of a "hmmm" moment than an "A-ha!" (For me, anyway, "A-ha!" moments are rare in Feldman's music, but I suppose one man's "hmmm" is another man's "A-ha!") Of melody in the usual sense there is none, although the work's chromaticism is quickly heard. Individual notes or chords often appear one at a time, as if Feldman were a poker player in no hurry to reveal his entire hand. This gives the music a pointillist feel. Pulse, when it is felt, is intermittent and prone to vary. At first the music seems emotionless, but as one comes to accept that the String Quartet may in fact be "life, but not as we know it," drama reveals itself in the music's dogged moments of insistence, awkward conversations, temporary alliances, and unusual timbres. Petulance, whining, nagging, stoicism, acceptance, beauty, and peace all are present in this work, for those who care to find them.
This is a reissue of a recording originally released by Koch International Classics in 1994. Back then, the performance seemed if not definitive, then at least totally satisfying, and I have no reason to revise that opinion now. Douglas Cohen's original booklet notes have been retained for this reissue.
An ear-stretching experience to be sure, but one well worth having.

The new television series Ripley is one of the most talked-about Netflix releases of the moment, but what songs are on the soundtrack?
Andrew Scott takes the title role in the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, opposite Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn .
The story, shot entirely in black and white, follows Scott’s character as he takes on a job assignment to take a trip to Italy in an attempt to persuade his employer’s son, Dickie Greenleaf ( Flynn ), to return home from Europe. As the series progresses, Tom Ripley works his way into the lives of Dickie and his girlfriend Marge (Fanning) and the story takes a dark turn.
The novel has been adapted several times before, most famously in 1999 with a feature film starring Matt Damon , Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow in the lead roles.
Ripley has been created by Steven Zaillian ( Schindler’s List , Gangs of New York ), and all eight episodes are available to stream on Netflix now.
The score for the show has been composed by Jeff Russo, who founded the bands Tonic and Low Stars, and has worked on the soundtracks for Fargo and Star Trek: Discovery .

Speaking to Netflix about the music, Russo has said: “The final score for Ripley is the result of two years of writing for a story that is so extraordinarily well crafted, the music just seemed to flow out effortlessly somehow.
“The thrilling and emotionally manipulative narrative contains so much tension, confusion and misdirection, and it was incredible to channel into that dynamic for this score.”
