This show is so far the best of the new era of Trek. I wish it were live action and I wish the creative team was given control of the whole franchise.

I find the show good but not the best imo it has had some great stories but like all Trek shows it has it’s problems. I hope for S2 they change things up.

I’m not particularly attached to any of the characters. The storytelling is solid though, which is a huge plus.

I’m surprised about it myself, but after this first season, I feel the same way! This should’ve been live action (and no other changes; still the same storylines, aimed at the same age group, etc.), and it would’ve been amazing!

This show has what Lower Decks is lacking for me: It strikes the right TONE, it FEELS like Trek, and doesn’t just disrespectfully “rummage around” in it for exploitation’s sake. LD has its moments here and there (last season’s DS9 episode, because it knows who to lure me in with 😅), but PRO, so far, is GOLDEN! 🪙😁👍

I don’t agree with what you say about LD, but absolutely agree about PRO feeling like Trek.

Do not forget, that this is born from Voyager Part. So i do have my thoughts if this would work for the entire franchise. But definitely fit like a glove when it comes to Voyager

My guess is that the second seasons mainplot for the Protostar-Crew is to find Chakotay, (unofficial) backed by the Vice-Admiral.

I have a feeling we’re going to be losing holo Janeway in this episode.

I think so too. I think the key is going to be resetting the Protostar to ‘factory settings’ so to speak.

I don’t think that means losing jolo-Janeway but rather her memories post construct.

facts me too

Its not true that new episodes of Prodigy are available on Paramount+ in Europe. In fact there are no new episodes. Its still America first. Paramount+ in Europe doesn`t have any worth for a star trek fan in Europe atm – you are still behind US at least six months.

The entire first season was aired on Nickelodeon in Denmark and a couple other regions though.

As the Federation hangs in the balance, the crew must make the ultimate sacrifice to save Starfleet’s future.

Blow up the damn ship!

”Ultimate sacrifice” I am guessing means blowing up the ship.

Blind warp using the proto engine, destination new galaxy, new adventures, no way back home anytime soon. Federation saved

Which I believe is foreshadowed by the title “Supernova”.

Blowing up the ship and sacrificing Hologram Janeway. I think i am more upset over losing hologram Janeway than i am over the destruction of the protostar.

unless of course someone pops up with a mobile emitter at the last minute. but i dont see that happening.

Would be very unusual to destroy the show’s starship and necessitate designing and animating so many brand new sets and a new title sequence.

My theory is that Chakotay will somehow come back from the future with the Protostar (uninfected)

Interesting development for season 2, we’ll just have to see what is in store…

So weird that we’re coming up on the end of Prodigy’s first season. Only eight weeks until Picard Season 3 then we’re off to Strange New Worlds again. I’ve really enjoyed this first season of Prodigy I’m sorry to see it end. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for Season 2.

I’m not thinking ‘only’ when looking at an 6 or 8 week break in new Trek offerings. It will make the end of this season of Prodigy all the more biting.

Tiger2 will say that who would have thought we’d have so much new Trek just a few years ago.

I’m clearly spoiled, looking at 50 episodes of Picard, SNW, LDS, Prodigy, and Discovery all working their way through postproduction and thinking “Why wait until mid February to premiere Picard season three?”

On the other hand, nothing is showing on the guild sheets for upcoming live action production for Trek in Toronto. While we know Paramount+ seems to like to wait until production is well advanced to announce new seasons being greenlighted, we usually see preproduction work showing up in January or February for a spring-summer of shooting.

Could be that the powers that be recognize they’re behind schedule for 2024 live action releases…

Especially as their footdragging on greenlighting things seems to mean their showrunners and talent are booked for other work.

Meanwhile, Terry Matalas’ new Witch Mountain television pilot for Disney+ is in production in the Greater Toronto & Hamilton Area.

I’m just hoping they won’t make the season finale a cliffhanger, unresolving the fate of Starfleet…

What’s worse, do that thing Picard does which is not even revisit it the next season.

This episode is so awesome, starfleet again save the world.

RECAP | Star Trek: Prodigy - Supernova, Part 1

Surrounded by the Federation armada, the crew attempts to stop their ship from destroying all of Starfleet.

Profile view of Dal and Gwyn looking ahead of them at the viewfinder on Star Trek: Prodigy

StarTrek.com

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for Episode 19 of Star Trek: Prodigy "Supernova, Part 1."

The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Prodigy ’s first season, “Supernova, Part 1” begins with Vice Admiral Janeway arguing with her guard, informing them of the devastating weapon aboard the Protostar . If she isn’t able to warn Starfleet, then the entire fleet could be destroyed.

Dal informs the Protostar crew that, unfortunately, he may have tarnished Janeway’s reputation, and it’s unclear if she’ll be able to help. Aboard the Dauntless , Commander Tysess and Ensign Asencia are explaining the situation to an irritated Admiral Jellico. He approves Asencia’s plan to send a boarding party onto the Protostar .

Ronny Cox as Admiral Jellico in Star Trek: Prodigy

As the Dauntless opens fire on the Protostar to take down its shields, Zero figures out how to essentially hotwire the ship. They have controls back, but they can’t go anywhere until the protodrive comes back online. They redirect power to boost the shields and make evasive maneuvers.

Rok almost spills the beans to Dal about his augment status, which prohibits him from joining Starfleet Academy. Gwyn realizes that’s not what he needs right now and redirects the conversation. Dal needs to be in command, full of confidence, and Gwyn gives him that. The crew works together beautifully, a testament to how far they’ve come since they first boarded the Protostar .

At the conn, Gwyn looks over her shoulder on Star Trek: Prodigy

Aboard the Dauntless , Janeway’s guard reveals that she has a history with the admiral. Years ago, she was one of the telepathic Brenari refugees the then-captain protected and transported across space on the starship Voyager in the Delta Quadrant (seen in Star Trek: Voyager episode “Counterpoint”). Because of that experience, she trusts the admiral and lets her out of the Brig.

The fight is tense, and Gwyn decides it’s time to take a different tactic; she goes to arm herself. Dal follows, trying to convince her that diplomacy might still work. She is unconvinced, but as she’s trying to tell him about his augment status keeping him out of Starfleet, he interrupts her and kisses her.

Dal backtracks with his hands up on Star Trek: Prodigy

She’s taken aback, and Dal backpedals. She then proceeds to tell Dal the truth — Starfleet won’t accept him because he’s an augment. Just then the shields go down on the Protostar . Warp and engines are offline.

Dal has a decision to make about what to do next. He does what’s best for his crew; they all deserve to belong somewhere. He may never be able to join Starfleet, but he’ll make sure his people still have a fighting chance.

Asencia (The Vindicator) in her true form walks ahead of The Diviner and Drednok on Star Trek: Prodigy

Meanwhile, the boarding party on the Dauntless is getting ready to head over to the Protostar . Asencia reveals her true Vau N’Akat form as The Vindicator, incapacitates the boarding party, and beams over to the Protostar with The Diviner and Drednok. She orders the enforcer to eliminate anyone who gets in their way, but The Diviner asks Drednok to spare Gwyn.

Dal orders everyone to take up arms and seals the bridge, leaving it in Gwyn’s hands. The Diviner and Asencia are able to get past them, and Asencia uses her Starfleet access to disable Holo-Janeway while Gwyn watches and hides. Drednok is keeping the rest of the crew very busy.

Dal stands firm holding his phaser beside Zero with Murf, Rok-Tahk, and Jankom Pog behind the pair on Star Trek: Prodigy

Gwyn locks her father below the Bridge deck with the Living Construct and challenges Asencia. Asencia does not have the qualms The Diviner has about killing his progeny and fights her. She defeats Gwyn and is about to kill her when The Diviner escapes. He tries to kill Asencia, but she turns the tables on him and stabs him with the heirloom weapon.

Just as Asencia opens a channel to the fleet, Vice Admiral Janeway arrives on the Bridge of the Dauntless . She orders Tysess not to answer the hail, but she’s too late. The Vindicator appears on their viewscreen as the Living Construct spreads across all the ships in the area. Shields are down and the ships fire upon one another.

Rok-Tahk lies on top of Jankom Pog as they look at an orb on Star Trek: Prodigy

Thanks to Drednok, the entire crew is restrained, but Rok-Tahk refuses to let this be the end. Thanks to her ingenuity, they manage to escape and confront Asencia. She uses Drednok as a lifepod and busts right through the ship’s hull. Luckily, automatic systems kick in; the breach is sealed with a forcefield.

The Diviner is dying, and he asks Gwyn to save their people — to find a way to unify them. She tells him she doesn’t know how, but he reassures her he believes in her before passing. The Protostar crew tries to take stock of the situation, but the Living Construct deactivates the universal translator. Just like on Tars Lamora, they aren't able to communicate with or understand one another.

A concerned Protostar crew and Holo-Janeway look out the viewfinder on Star Trek: Prodigy

On the Dauntless , things aren’t looking any better. Janeway orders the crew to abandon ship, but the crew can’t understand her. The situation has somehow gotten worse, but there’s a bright spot. Gwyn learned multiple languages in order to create conflict on Tars Lamora; now she can use that same ability to bridge the divide between everyone.

Now that the Living Construct has been unleashed, the Dauntless and Protostar can communicate. Vice Admiral Janeway reaches out and Dal responds. Together, they come up with a new plan — non-Starfleet ships won’t be affected by the Living Construct, which means they needs to call in some allies. Without the universal translator, she can’t do it; but Gwyn and the Protostar can. Gwyn takes command of the Protostar, and, as the fleet tears itself apart, asks the Klingons for help.

On the Protostar, Dal and Gwyn communicate with a Klingon Bird of Prey on the viewscreen on Star Trek: Prodigy

The admiral begins evacuating the Dauntless , but the Bridge is targeted. Without shields, there’s no hope. Janeway braces for an impact that never comes as a Klingon Bird-of-Prey takes the hit.

As more non-Federation ships warp in to help, the universal translators come back online. But there’s bad news — when under attack, the fleet automatically sends out an SOS, which means more Starfleet ships are coming in to help, resulting in more infections and destruction. The Protostar crew realizes that they can’t stop this, and they’re watching Starfleet be destroyed before their eyes.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Review

star trek supernova wiki

I’d call myself a mid-level trekkie (loved Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, can’t get into Discovery or Picard), but I’m now questioning that label thanks to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Honestly, I had no idea that Star Trek Prodigy, the TV series that this game is based on, even existed. But it’s there, squirreled away on Paramount+ and aimed at younger viewers. I hang my head in shame and hand in my Starfleet lapel pin.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is the latest game to come from the collaboration between Paramount+ and Outright Games, a deal that has already produced Dreamworks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms . It’s also the twenty-millionth game that Outright seem to have unleashed in the past few months, having furnished the holiday period with L.O.L Surprise! B.B.s BORN TO TRAVEL , PAW Patrol: Grand Prix and the previously mentioned Dragons game, among DLC to their other games. But rather than spreading themselves thin, Outright Games are onto something of a quality run. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova, rather than bringing the run to a screeching halt, keeps it going.

star trek prodigy supernova review 1

It’s the age-old tale of a starship crash-landing on a planet about to be subsumed by a supernova. Even more thrillingly, the crew of said starship has been teleported out, willy-nilly, across various planets before the crash. It leaves you, Dal R’El and Gwyndala, racing against time to save the crew, fix the Starship Protostar, and yeet out of the system before everyone becomes stardust. But that’s not all! This system has been enslaved by an old nemesis of yours, and they’re harvesting the planets for as much energy as they can before it’s not there anymore.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova attempts to straddle the grown-up themes of conventional Star Trek, and the attention levels of your average teen, and it gets there, just about. We’re personally not fans of the Marvel-like tone, with everyone quipping like there’s no tomorrow, defusing any potential drama by joking about it (the simmering romance also makes us wince), but there’s a surprising epicness to proceedings, and the themes of slavery and isolationism are a little heavier than you might have expected. It’s actually too talky, in our view, pausing the action too often when we wanted a greater flow. But it’s far from poor quality.

What this is welded onto is an adventure-puzzle game that reminds us a little of Lara Croft: Temple of Osiris , the zoomed out, co-op take on the Tomb Raider universe. Like that game, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is unashamedly co-op, to the point that playing it solo feels like you are losing something of the experience. When playing alone, you are constantly tapping B to switch to the other player, when there’s a much greater energy and flow that comes from playing together. If you can find another trekkie, it’s the optimum way to play.

It also shares Temple of Osiris’s viewpoint and mix of combat and puzzling. Roughly one-third of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is fighting, which feels about right: Star Trek has always liked a wrestling match with a Gorn, but it’s predominantly cerebral, and so it goes. We expected the combat to be slight and repetitive, and – you know what – it really does knock it out of the park. We’re not talking Devil May Cry here, but there’s substance that we really didn’t expect.

star trek prodigy supernova review 2

Much of the strategy comes from whether you fight close-quarters or at range. The Watchers, the game’s one and only enemy, swarm you, and the latter parts of the game become a firework display of grenades, lasers, charging attacks and explosive death rattles. You’re always on the move, switching between the two attack types, and even switching characters in single-player, as both Dal R’El and Gwyndala have their specialisms. Negotiating this chaos is great fun, and – while there are safety nets in the form of revives and extra life points – it can get pretty challenging. We found ourselves hitting the deck more times than we expected.

But the real reason we like the combat is the choice of weapons. There are three per character, and they are decently inventive and pack quite the punch. Our favourite was a phaser rifle that would absolutely leather the enemies, and we’d swing it round at speed like we were playing a twin-stick shooter. But, equally, there are power-fists that Gwyndala uses that can be charged by holding X, leaping over enemies, or a lance that cuts through Watchers like metallic butter. A lot of work has gone into making these punchy, and it’s time well spent. There’s more heft to the combat than it has any right to have.

Which makes it all the more bewildering that upgrading your combat abilities is so slimline. It’s a bit arse, really, and could have added another dimension with very little work at all. At various points in the campaign, you are arbitrarily told that a weapon can be upgraded. There are three levels of upgrade, and they just dink up the speed or strength. Slightly better are some holodeck challenges that improve your crewmate powers (an automatically triggered effect that deals AOE damage), but those crewmate powers were poor to start off with, and we often forgot they were there.

star trek prodigy supernova review 3

Away from combat, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova expects you to think. As you move through chunky, lovingly realised environments, you are often confronted with laser walls and blocked corridors. You are stuck, and your aim is to become unstuck. Often, this means utilising the two characters’ skillsets. Dal R’El can lift up fallen pillars, allowing Gwyndala to duck underneath, or he can don a camouflage suit and escape the view of cameras. Gwyndala, meanwhile, has a disturbing arm-tentacle ability that can create a bridge for Dal R’El. Helping each other through the levels is one flavour of the cooperation.

The other is blocks. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova absolutely loves a cube: enough that we expected it to feature in the title somewhere. There are heavy blocks, light-emitting blocks, teleporting blocks and switch blocks. There are small blocks and big blocks. You push them, drop them off cliffs, drop them onto switches or teleport them across an arena. This is all in the name of environmental puzzles, and, by golly, there is an endless number of them in Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova.

Now, your reaction to this may differ. The puzzles are supremely well designed: they escalate in difficulty, and no layout is the same as another. They wring every last drop out of cube-based puzzling. But there is an opportunity for fatigue here, and we can imagine teenage trekkies with their Vulcan ears on, slamming down the pad and huffing off to their bedroom, cursing the ‘sodding blocks’. We love a good Sokoban-puzzler , and even we were starting to get sick of all the similar puzzles. Heaven knows what Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova will feel like for players who like combat, but couldn’t give a flying tribble for puzzles.

More so than perhaps any Outright Games title that we’ve played, there is a deal of substance to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Levels can run to thirty minutes in length, and there are plentiful secrets to find in nooks and crannies (although we’d have opted for an upgrade system that better used them). You’re looking at close to ten hours of gameplay here, particularly if you are chasing medals for strong performance in the level. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova needed to be substantial: it’s an expensive little title, coming to £44.99 – a world of prices that no Outright Game has ever gone before.

star trek prodigy supernova review 4

Is Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova worth that outlay? Yes, but with some directives. One, bring a second-in-command. This has been designed from the ground up for two players. Two, prepare yourselves for long bouts of puzzling. This isn’t the action-packed romp that you might expect. And three, fans of the series are going to get so much more from the experience. For our part, the goofy dialogue had us wrinkling our nose so much that we looked like a Klingon.

We expected Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova to arrive in a red shirt, virtually dead on arrival. Instead, we’ve got a game with substance and style, and there’s nothing more Star Trek than that.

The video played during the livestream shows players controlling Dal and Gwyn in a top-down, twin-stick-style game. In the 4th century , a group of Vulcans left their homeworld Vulcan and settled the planets Calder II , Dessica II , Draken IV , Yadalla Prime , and Barradas III . This civilization , called the Debrune , was regarded as a predecessor of the Romulan Star Empire. After their odyssey, which lasted for centuries , the Vulcans finally reached and settled Romulus. In 2387 , Romulus's sun went supernova , endangering the entire galaxy. Starfleet had planned to aid in the evacuation of Romulus, but political controversy caused these plans to be abandoned in 2385 after the rescue armada was lost in the Attack on Mars . Ambassador Spock created a red matter singularity which consumed the star, but not before the supernova reached Romulus, fragmenting the planet and annihilating its inhabitants. ( Star Trek , PIC : " Remembrance ")

In an alternate timeline experienced by Jean-Luc Picard in 2370 , Romulus remained intact but had been conquered by the Klingons by 2395 . Romulus was cut off from the Federation, except for the occasional medical ship allowed through to help stop an outbreak of Terrellian plague . A new future was created by Picard in 2370. Background information [ ]

In Roman mythology, Romulus and his brother Remus were known as the brothers who founded the city of Rome. Romulus became the first king after killing his brother. The relation between the planets of Romulus and Remus reflects this.

At a Creation Entertainment Star Trek convention in San Diego, California on 9 January 1993 , Marina Sirtis jokingly revealed she had renamed Romulus to "The Bad Hair/Bad Clothes Planet". [2]

A view of the surface of Romulus was depicted on several viewscreens on Deep Space 9 's Promenade and Replimat , including in " Whispers " and " The Muse ".

The Romulans and the Romulan Star Empire were referred exclusively as an Alpha Quadrant power throughout Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager , such as in " The Search, Part II " or " Flesh and Blood ", and " In the Pale Moonlight " clarified that that the Romulans and Cardassians shared a common border. Despite this, a graphic placing the Romulan Star Empire in the Beta Quadrant made a brief on-screen appearance, as a display graphic on a PADD in Star Trek: Insurrection . [3] The script of 2009 's Star Trek likewise referred to Romulus as being in the Beta Quadrant, in a line of dialogue which is not in the final edit of that film. [4] Dialog from the Star Trek: Picard episode " The End is the Beginning " implied that the Romulan Star Empire was in the Beta Quadrant.

Production Designer Herman Zimmerman commented in Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 10 , p. 104, about his work during Star Trek Nemesis : " The Romulans have also possessed advanced technology a lot longer than the Federation, so the look was a combination of art deco and medievalism meets high-tech... Most of the designs were inspired by an Italian designer called Carlo Scarpa . "

Syd Dutton with matte painting

Syd Dutton with a matte painting he illustrated of Romulus

Regarding exterior design of the Senate area, designer Syd Dutton said, " [Director] Stuart Baird wanted us to think about Albert Speer , the architect who did all the conceptual drawings for Hitler. Speer took that national socialist idea to a ridiculous extreme where everything was huge and classical [....] The Romulans are a people who live in a marshy area. They had little houses on stilts around mudwork. The mudwork became part of this central core and that was where the old part of the city – the Forum and Senate buildings – was located. As the city expanded going away from that, the buildings became bigger and more technological. " ( The Art of Alien Worlds , VOY Season 4 DVD special features)

Reference works [ ]

In virtually all reference works , Romulus and the Romulan Star Empire were depicted to be located in the Beta Quadrant. These books included such works as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual (p. 2), Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Journal (p. 9), Star Trek: The Next Generation Writers' Technical Manual (p. 20), Star Trek: Voyager Technical Manual (p. 27), Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 45, 55, 56, et al. ), and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Beta Quadrant: Local Space Extract" and "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"). Even reference works that date back to a time before the Alpha and Beta Quadrant distinction was invented depicted the Romulans in the area that was later classified as the Beta Quadrant. These included such works as the Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual (T0:02:07:00) and Star Trek Maps (Chart A). According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 43 & 393), the Empire also included space in the Alpha Quadrant. The fact that DS9 : " In the Pale Moonlight " shows Romulus as being only one day away from the Cardassian-Romulan border renders the aforementioned reference works inaccurate, since none of them show the Cardassian Union and Romulan Empire with a mutual border.

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 55 & 66), the official name for this planet was Romulus. It was an M-class planet located in the Romulus system and was the capital of the Romulan Star Empire. The planetary capital was also named Romulus. The dominant species were the humanoid Romulans. In 2378 , the population of this world was estimated to be eighteen billion. The ancestral homeworld of the colonists, Vulcan, was warp-capable in 320 AD . Approximately fifty years later, these ancestors left Vulcan at the time of the Great Awakening . This planet was located in the Romulan War Theater of Operations (2156-2160).

According to Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library (p. 34), the Romulans, who referred to themselves as Rihannsu, called their homeworld ch'Rihan. In their ancient language, which was a derivative of High Vulcan, they called the planet Rom A'losh ("Raptor's Nest").

Apocrypha [ ]

According to Star Trek Maps (Chart D), the two moons of Romulus were called Megara and Amyclae.

In her novelization of Unification , executive producer Jeri Taylor gave the name Dartha as the capital of Romulus. However, as of the subsequent novel Vulcan's Heart by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz , Pocket Books "officially" standardized Ki Baratan as the name for the Romulan capital.

In the Rihannsu novels, Romulus was called ch'Rihan and Remus was ch'Havran, and the Romulans were the Rihannsu (all of which being their names in the Romulan language ). Remus was said to be the more temperate of the two planets. Also, Romulus was said to have at least four moons.

In FASA 's RPG sourcebook The Romulans , Romulus was called Rom'lasz and its full system name was Stelam Rom'lnz IIA.

In Last Unicorn Games ' RPG sourcebook The Way of D'era , Romulus was called Rom'laas or Ket-cheleb III.

In Star Trek: Federation - The First 150 Years Romulus was called Rom A'losh, which translates as "Raptors Nest".

The comic book series Star Trek: Countdown , a tie-in to the 2009 Star Trek film, gave further detail about the destruction of Romulus. The supernova which destroyed the planet was identified as being in the Hobus system; Nero and his crew were mining in that system at the time of the star's first eruption. Prior to the destruction of Romulus, Spock attempted to warn the Romulan Senate that the supernova posed a threat to both the planet and the entire Romulan Star Empire, but was rebuffed.

In the video game Star Trek Online , the supernova that destroyed Romulus was intentionally caused by a faction of Romulans following the orders of the Iconians . The game's backstory, which included the Countdown comics, also explained the physical impossibility of a star in another system destroying Romulus with no possible evacuation time by stating that the supernova's shock wave propagated through subspace at faster-than-light speeds (implied in game to be the result of the manner by which the nova was induced).
