Queen Elizabeth and Tom Cruise Became Secret Friends Before Her Death

Hollywood royalty, meet British royalty.

Tom Cruise

In the weeks before her death, Queen Elizabeth, 96, proved it’s never too late to make a new friend—except her new friend was none other than Tom Cruise, who Her late Majesty “really hit it off” with over the summer, according to Page Six .

The Top Gun actor was in the U.K. as a part of the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, but, because of ongoing mobility issues, Her late Majesty was unable to meet him at the festivities.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed to not have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him,” a source says. “Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together.”

The Mission Impossible star was such a huge hit that he got to fire a ceremonial gun. “She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch,” the source says. “He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter.”

The twosome’s friendship was set to continue on with another lunch date, but the Queen died on September 8 at Balmoral Castle before they could reunite.

In a television interview earlier this year, Cruise said of the Queen “she’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic.”

Hey may be showbiz royalty, but it no doubt would have been exciting for Tom Cruise to grow close to an actual royal, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in the weeks before her death.

According to Roya Nikkhah, Royal Editor for the Sunday Times , the 60-year-old actor built up a friendship with the Queen during her final summer at Windsor Castle this year, before she departed her Berkshire residence for Balmoral.

After the event, Cruise is said to have mixed with the Queen’s guests during a private drinks reception in the royal box, where he met fans and posed for photographs. The Queen herself, however, who was grappling with mobility issues in her final months, returned directly to the Castle for her comfort.

An unnamed source explained: ‘The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle… Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together. She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter.’ This was quite the honour given the Queen was said to dislike helicopters landing on her lawns, having reportedly been dismayed by the damage caused by then-president Donald Trump, who flew into Buckingham Palace by helicopter when he visited Buckingham Palace in 2019.

Their time together reportedly included a photo op where the two posed for pictures together, and a moment when Cruise was allied to fire a ceremonial gun. The proposed lunch ultimately didn’t take place, however, as the monarch died on 8 September, before their reunion could take place.

Ahead of his appearance at the pageant in May, Cruise spoke highly of the Queen in an interview with presenters Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham, dubbing her ‘a woman that I greatly admire.’ He went on: ‘I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her… the world knows the dignity, devotion and kindness, that is what I have always felt about her.’

He added that he was ‘very honoured’ to be part of A Gallop Through History , in which he introduced two segments throughout the performance, dubbing it a ‘real privilege’. He stated: ‘I love the history of England, and I just have great respect for the Queen. So when they asked, I instantly said, “Yeah, it would be my honour”.’

Cruise previously met the monarch’s late husband, Prince Phlip, at a Buckingham Palace charity dinner in 2017. He recalled: ‘We were talking about pilots… and he was telling me the wonderful story of how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [the Queen’s] coronation… I was this close to going, “I’d like to land a helicopter, if you ever need a helicopter, someone to pick you up, I think I could put it right there”.’

Cruise has been associated with other Royal Family members, too, meeting the late Diana, Princess of Wales in the ’90s – and later attending her funeral – and now enjoying a cordial relationship with today’s Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, who accompanied him to London’s Top Gun: Maverick premiere in May.

How Tom Cruise became a 'secret friend' of Queen Elizabeth

In the weeks before Queen Elizabeth’s death , the late monarch had found a new pal in Hollywood star Tom Cruise, suggests a new report.

According to Page Six , she and the Top Gun actor “really hit it off” over the summer, a source told a British media outlet.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations that marked her 70th anniversary on the throne had been attended by Cruise; however, the ailing royal was unable to meet the Mission Impossible star as she suffering from mobility issues.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together,” the source said, reported Page Six .

The visit was a success, with Cruise given the chance to fire a ceremonial gun. “She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter,” the source added.

This newly-formed friendship could have continued with a lunch date, but it could not as Elizabeth died on 8 September at the age of 96, before they could reunite.

Cruise had spoken of his admiration for the Queen during a television interview that happened before the Platinum Jubilee’s Gallop Through History equine pageant in May.

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic,” he said at the time, as per Page Six.

They may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the late Queen had an incredible secret friendship with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. This week, it was claimed that the monarch and the Mission Impossible actor "really hit it off" over the summer.

Cruise had a special role during Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee celebrations - and caused quite the commotion when he walked up to Windsor Castle for a horse-themed event in May titled A Gallop Through History. The actor was tasked with introducing a key moment of the evening, a performance by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, while the smiling Queen watched on.

"It takes huge courage and discipline to do what they do, galloping with guns that were fired in the battles of the First World War, weighing one-and-a-half tonnes, with no brakes," he said,

"The drive demonstrates absolute trust between horse and rider."

Before the proceedings kicked off, the A-lister spoke to presenters Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham, revealing it was an "honour" to have been asked to attend.

"I was just very honoured. She's a woman I greatly admire. She has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic," he said.

"I remember as a kid, seeing photos of her. I travelled around a lot and I came to England to make movies in 1982. I love the history and I just have great respect for her.

"When they asked I instantly said 'it would be my honour to be here'."

Cruise reportedly delighted many of the Queen's guests and posed for selfies with fans, but the late monarch was experiencing mobility problems so did not meet him.

The Queen was said to have been very disappointed not to meet Cruise, so later invited him back to have tea and a special tour of Windsor Castle.

The Top Gun star was given the full VIP treatment and completed his lifelong dream of landing a helicopter at a royal residence, according to the Sunday Times.

A source said: "Just the two of them had tea together. She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter."

Cruise, who has previously confessed his love for England, was reportedly going to meet the Queen again for a lunch date.

Tragically, that reunion never happened because Her Majesty sadly died in September at the age of 96.

It's not just the Queen who took a liking to Tom, as he accompanied the Prince and Princess of Wales down the red carpet at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in May.

The superstar actor was hailed as a "perfect gentleman" after royal fans spotted a sweet moment between him and Kate.

She was wearing some very high heels, which could have been an issue while navigating some stairs, but Tom kindly offered Kate his hand.

Fans took to Twitter to praise the actor, with one writing: "Tom Cruise being a perfect gentleman tonight!! Kate just stunning."

Another added: "A true fan girl moment for the Duchess of Cambridge - as Tom Cruise helps her up the steps at the Top Gun Maverick premiere, with Prince William looking super happy for his wife!"

Speaking at the premiere, Tom heaped praise on the entire royal family - and admitted he has a lot in common with William.

"I was there for her and I greatly admire her dedication to the country. They do so many wonderful things for so many people," he said.

"We have a lot in common. We loved England. The Duke and I are both aviators so we love flying."

Queen Elizabeth II struck up an unlikely friendship with Top Gun actor Tom Cruise shortly before her death. According to Page Six , a source told London's Sunday Times that the late monarch "really hit it off" with Cruise over the summer.

Cruise participated in the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June , but her declining health meant the Queen couldn't make it to every event. That didn't stop her from meeting the Mission Impossible star though .

"The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together,” the source revealed.

The visit went well and Cruise was reportedly given the opportunity to fire a ceremonial gun. "She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter," the source said.

The two had plans for a lunch date but the Queen passed away in Balmoral on September 8th before it could happen. During the Platinum Jubilee’s Gallop Through History equine pageant, Crusie talked about his admiration for the late Queen.

"She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion," he said. "What she has accomplished has been historic."

QUEEN ELIZABETH II met a number of unlikely celebrities throughout her 70-year reign, including Lady Gaga and Will.i.am, but towards the end of her life she struck up a surprising friendship with Tom Cruise.

The late monarch and the Hollywood veteran apparently “really hit it off” over the summer, according to The Sunday Times in London.

Cruise was a feature of Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations back in May, where he guest-hosted the historic commemoration’s ‘A Gallop Through History’ event at Windsor Castle.

But due to mobility issues, Queen Elizabeth had to leave the equine pageant early. She was reportedly so “disappointed” to not have met the 60-year-old action star that she invited him for afternoon tea at Windsor Castle on a separate occasion.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him,” a source told The Times .

The visit was such a success that the Queen not only took a few photos with Cruise but allowed him to fire a ceremonial gun while at the castle, the publication reports.

She even permitted him to personally pilot and land his helicopter on the castle grounds. In 2019, the Queen was reportedly disgruntled by Donald Trump’s helicopter travels during a state visit — as he damaged the lawn at Buckingham Palace and insisted on flying into the grounds of the palace twice in the day.

“She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter,” the source continued.

But their lunch date was not meant to be, as the Queen died on September 8 at age 96.

During Cruise’s ‘A Gallop Through History’ speech, he spoke of his admiration for the UK’s longest-reigning monarch.

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion.

“What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her.”

Just days later, Cruise walked the red carpet alongside Prince William and Princess Catherine at the Top Gun: Maverick premier in London.

At the time, Cruise said of William, “We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.”

Buckingham Palace voices: Queen Elizabeth made us 'proud to be British'

Buckingham Palace voices: Queen Elizabeth made us 'proud to be British'

People outside Buckingham Palace share memories of Queen Elizabeth II with Fox News Digital.

LONDON – Just a few months back, the new Queen Consort Camilla celebrated her 75th birthday with a special TV documentary, magazine deal and the roar of approval from the Great British public. Yet, today, as she headed out toward the crowds of Buckingham Palace, here was a woman drenched in grief who only recently received some terrible news relating to her own family. And now her life has changed forever.

The loving support she gave our new King Charles III was evident for all to witness, but the royal show must go on. And, while we are united in grief as a nation, behind the scenes the wheels are turning fast.

Princess Anne is set for a new bigger role as Charles looks toward slimming and removing, many hope, other members of the enlarged and unworkable royals.

The mood is one of somber sadness, of course, but many people are angry that huge sporting events and concerts and major gatherings have been canceled. The queen, you see, would not have wanted this to happen. She believed in the show going on.

WHY DEATH OF THE QUEEN WON'T REPAIR THE BROKEN RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WILLIAM AND HARRY: ROYAL EXPERT

Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has reportedly spoken with senior members of the royal family about attending Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. (Getty)

Meghan Markle is holed up in Frogmore Cottage, where she claimed there was no room to stand. Yet she has a tough choice: face the music of the U.K. public who really dislike what she has done to the royal family or swiftly disappear back to LA.

Whatever she decides, it won’t be easy. She, along with Harry, piled on pressure to all senior members of the royal family of late, hence the reason Harry jumped ship back to London even before his father King Charles.

KING CHARLES III SAYS DEATH OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II WAS A 'MOMENT I'VE BEEN DREADING' IN MEETING WITH PM TRUSS

Royal watchers have taken note of the very first event where King Charles III held his first audience with Liz Truss at Buckingham Palace, after the prime minister hailed the queen as "one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen."

Truss was greeted directly out of her car by Major Johnny Thompson, the man who was specially requested by the queen to sit behind Harry and Meghan at the now infamous St. Paul’s thanksgiving service to keep a swift eye on them. Given his newly found sex symbol status, it’s no surprise he was requested to perform this duty as his devotion to the queen was clearly obvious at previous events.

The bigger scale of the event is that shops, tourist attractions and royal palaces have closed today following the news of the queen's death as the country enters its period of mourning.

While plans have been drawn up to mark the 10 days following the monarch's death, many shops and attractions have made the decision to close up shop.

Selfridges, Liberty and Mulberry were among the first shops to announce they will keep their stores closed until Saturday as a mark of respect for the queen, whose death was announced yesterday.

Meanwhile, performances will continue at theaters across the country, but many will dim the lights and observe a moment of silence before opening. Some also plan to play the national anthem and open books of condolences for audiences to sign.

The rest of the clan await their fate as many hope that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not welcomed back into royal life. One can only hope that William, who Charles will defer to on many serious matters of the crown, will now have the final word. After all, his next tenure is the one that will really shape the monarchy for the future.

Finally, the pictures of an ashen-faced Catherine driving in Windsor today really said it all – wife, mother and one day queen. For many, she is the sheer definition of a queen in waiting.

According to Page Six, she and the 'Top Gun' actor "really hit it off" over the summer, a source told a British media outlet.

Queen Elizabeth Found A Friend In Actor Tom Cruise Before Her Death: Report

Queen Elizabeth was unable to meet the 'Mission Impossible' star as she suffering from mobility issues.

In the weeks before Queen Elizabeth's death, the late monarch had found a new pal in Hollywood star Tom Cruise, Page Six reported.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations that marked her 70th anniversary on the throne had been attended by Cruise; however, the ailing royal was unable to meet the 'Mission Impossible' star as she suffering from mobility issues.

"The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him.

Afterward, just the two of them had tea together," the source said, reported Page Six.

The visit was a success, with Mr Cruise given the chance to fire a ceremonial gun. "She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter," the source added.

This newly-formed friendship could have continued with a lunch date, but it could not as Elizabeth died on September 8 at the age of 96, before they could reunite.

Cruise had spoken of his admiration for the Queen during a television interview that happened before the Platinum Jubilee's Gallop Through History equine pageant in May.

A look back at Tom Cruise's long relationship with the British royals

By Jo Abi | 3 months ago

You would think action-loving Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has no place in the stiff and proper life of the British Royal family, but he in fact has a long history with the royals since early on in his career.

Not only has he spent significant time in London filming movies, he's also attended the premieres of his films in the UK, many of which have been attended by senior royals.

Most recently, he stood by Prince William's side as the royal broke his silence on his father, King Charles' cancer diagnosis.

Tom Cruise

Here is a look back at Tom Cruise's long history with the British royals, including his special relationship with the late Princess Diana.

Early days in London

When you are one of the world's biggest celebrities who spends significant time in London filming blockbuster movies, it's only a matter of time before you run into a royal or two.

Cruise has filmed multiple hit movies in the UK including many of the Mission Impossible movies and Edge of Tomorrow.

Before his work took him to the home of the British royals, Cruise attended his own movie premieres in the country – including the first Top Gun movie released in 1986.

It is said that Prince William and Prince Harry were huge fans of the movie, although the were only four and three when it was first released, so didn't catch up on Maverick and Goose's incredible friendship until later in life.

Princess Diana

It is said that Princess Diana had a crush on Tom Cruise and at one stage hoped to date him.

That's according to the book Diana: An Intimate Portrait by Judy Wade. Diana and Cruise met at the London premiere of Far and Away in 1992, shortly after the princess had split from Prince Charles.

But she was out of luck, with Cruise happily married to Nicole Kidman at the time. She also co-starred in the movie.

Diana and the actor would meet again several times over the years.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman also attended the royal's 1997 funeral following her death in a Paris car crash.

After her death, Cruise spoke out against the paparazzi who were chasing her vehicle at the time, saying on CNN : "When you're pursuing or chasing, that's harassment."

A royal fan in Prince William

Prince William grew up watching the original Top Gun movie and the royal's interest in aviation grew into a career, with William, 39, serving eight years with the military.

He joined the EAAA (East Anglian Air Ambulance) in March 2015 after flying rescue helicopters with the Royal Air Force in North Wales for more than three years.

In July 2015, the Duke piloted his first operational mission with the EAAA.

He retired to become a full time working royal in 2017.

Tom Cruise and Prince William

William, who has met Cruise a number of times over the years, has developed a friendship with the actor and they share a mutual interest in aviation.

Cruise reportedly invited the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to a private screening of Top Gun: Maverick ahead of the movie's official screening at Leicester Square and hosted by Paramount Pictures and The Film and TV Charity, the 72nd Royal Film Performance hosted by the charity.

Meeting Prince Philip

Cruise first met the late Prince Philip in 2017 when the actor was invited to attend a dinner celebrating the Outward Bound Trust charity at Buckingham Palace.

Cruise is a supporter of the charity set up to help young people from all walks of life reach their full potential through outdoor pursuits.

Speaking of the meeting, Cruise said he and the then-Duke of Edinburgh bonded over their love of helicopters.

He told ITV's Phillip Schofield: "There was a moment, of course we were talking about pilots, we had to talk about helicopters, and he was telling me the wonderful story of how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [The Queen's] coronation.

"Fantastic story. I was this close to going 'I'd like to land a helicopter, if you ever need a helicopter, I think I could put it right there."

Shared interests

Cruise has a number of shared interests with the British royals including fashion, movies, tennis and equestrian sports.

He has previously attended the Fashion Awards in London, most recently in 2019 when designer Giorgio Armani was being honoured. Cruise has also rubbed shoulders with royals at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAS) awards.

Prince William serves as BAFTAs president.

Cruise was in the crowd along with senior royals watching Australia's Ash Barty take out the Women's Singles title in 2021.

He has also attended equestrian events along with senior royals including at Royal Ascot in 2014 where he presented the winners trophy.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebration

When Cruise was asked to be a part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebration, he reportedly jumped at the chance, his admiration for Her Majesty having spanned years.

Not only was Cruise attending the event, he narrated a portion of the event which was filmed and televised on ITV in the UK. The event was called 'A Gallop Through History' and was held on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

He spoke to waiting media having arrived for the event: "What she has accomplished is historic.

"She has met presidents, world leaders, people from all walks of life… the world knows the dignity, devotion and kindness, that is what I have always felt about her."

"Someone that understands her position and has held it through a history that's just been extraordinary the past 70 years."

He told ITV : "It is a wonderful event and I feel very privileged to be here. I was very honoured… She is just a woman I greatly admire. She is someone who has tremendous dignity. I admire her devotion and what she has accomplished is historic."

At the event, Cruise introduced a performance by The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, describing it as "one of the most enthralling, thrilling, heart-in-mouth displays".

Also part of the event was Dame Helen Mirren and Katherine Jenkins.

Family connection

Cruise's daughter with Nicole Kidman, Bella, 29, lives in Croydon with her husband Max Parker giving the actor extra reason to spend time in the UK outside of his work commitments.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Kidman spoke of children Bella and Connor's ties to the UK.

"Bella lives just outside London. You know, she really feels more English," Kidman said.

"We lived there for Eyes Wide Shut , Mission Impossible and The Portrait of a Lady . They both had English accents when they were little."

Connor and Cruise are based in Florida, however Cruise does own properties in the UK including in Biggin Hill and previously in Sussex. He also owns a lavish penthouse apartment in London.

Supporting Prince William as he spoke about King Charles' cancer

Tom Cruise was standing by as the royal opened up about the eventful first month of 2024, which saw both his father and his wife admitted to hospital for separate medical issues.

The royal and Top Gun star happily met and chatted together at a gala dinner for London's Air Ambulance Charity this week, even taking a picture together with the ambulance staff.

The official social media accounts for the Wales couple even shared a photo of the reunion with the caption, "Fancy seeing you here, @TomCruise! 🚁."

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days," William told the gala dinner for London's Air Ambulance Charity. "It means a great deal to us all."

Catherine, Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital to undergo a planned abdominal surgery on January 17 and stayed in hospital for about three weeks before heading back home to continue her recovery. William had also taken time off to be with her and their three children, but returned to public duties with this event.

His return came after his father's bombshell reveal that he has been diagnosed with cancer, which the monarch had shared publicly on Monday, February 5. The cancer was discovered after the King underwent a procedure to treat his enlarged prostate on January 29. After spending a few days in hospital after the procedure, the monarch is now resting and recovering at his Sandringham estate.

"It's fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather medical focus, so I thought I'd come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all," William said jokingly.

Sarah Ferguson  is among many honoring  Queen Elizabeth on what would have been her 98th birthday.

The Duchess of York, 64 — who was previously married to the Queen's son, Prince Andrew , with whom she shares two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie , 34, — posted her tribute alongside a photograph of the Queen at her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 .

"Today we are remembering Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II" she began her message, before noting that it would have been the late monarch's birthday.

"Thank you for all that you have taught us, for being a steadfast leader and dear friend. You are sorely missed," she concluded the post's caption.

Fergie's tribute to the Queen came amid many organizations honoring the late monarch on her birthday, including the official Instagram account for London's Westminster Abbey — where the many significant moments in the Queen's life, including her coronation in 1952, were held, as well as being the location of her state funeral in 2022 . "Remembering Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who was born #onthisday in 1926. 'The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,' " the Abbey wrote alongside an image of the Queen in attendance at the royal church.

Ascot Racecourse, where Royal Ascot is famously held each year, shared footage on X (formerly Twitter) of the Queen's horse Estimate famously winning the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013, an event which marked the first time a reigning monarch had won the race.

"Today, in honour of what would have been Queen Elizabeth II's birthday, we look back with delight on Estimate's captivating Gold Cup win at #RoyalAscot. Pure jubilation," the post read.

Queen Elizabeth  died on Sept. 8, 2022 , at age 96. Her cause of death was listed as old age , according to a document published by the National Records of Scotland.

To mark the history-making monarch's first posthumous birthday last year, Prince William and   Kate Middleton shared a never-before-seen photo of the Queen surrounded by some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Prince and Princess of Wales' three children — Prince George ,  Princess Charlotte and  Prince Louis — appeared in the image along with Zara and Mike Tindall's three children — Mia, Lena and Lucas. Meanwhile, Peter Phillips' two daughters, Savannah and Isla, smiled for the portrait.

Two of Queen Elizabeth's grandchildren were also pictured.  Prince Edward  and his wife  Sophie 's son,  James , and daughter,  Lady Louise Windsor , stood at the back of the picture.

The image of Queen Elizabeth was taken by Princess Kate during a family trip to Balmoral in 2022, the royal residence in Scotland where the monarch traditionally spent her summer months and where she died.

The British royal family's official social media accounts also marked Queen Elizabeth's birthday last year by sharing a photo of the monarch .

"Today, we remember the incredible life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 97th birthday," they captioned the post . "When Her Majesty was born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth and her family did not expect that she would one day become Queen. Following the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII in 1936, her father acceded to the throne."

They continued, "When King George VI died in February 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II when she was just 25. Her Majesty went on to be Britain’s longest reigning Monarch - the only one in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee."

Operation Menai Bridge: The plan for King Charles III’s death explained

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

King Charles III ascended to the throne following the September 2022 death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

After more than one year of reigning, the royal family was hit with the devastating news that Charles was diagnosed with cancer following a January 2024  surgery for benign prostate enlargement .

In April 2024, it was reported that the monarch’s health was declining and plans for his funeral were being updated .

King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II.

“Speaking to friends of the king in recent weeks about his health, the most common response is … ‘It’s not good,’” Tom Sykes of the Daily Beast reported .

A friend of the monarch claimed Charles was “determined to beat it and they are throwing everything at it,” adding, “Everyone is staying optimistic, but he is really very unwell. More than they are letting on.”

As Charles’ health issues persist, plans about the future of the throne have been put in place under a code name.

Find out more about Operation Menai Bridge below.

What is Operation Menai Bridge?

King Charles III.

Operation Menai Bridge is the code name given to the former Prince of Wales to reference his death. It’s also the name of the world’s first iron suspension bridge in Anglesey, Wales.

The way Operation Menai Bridge will unfold following Charles’ death will be similar to that of the 10-day plan Operation London Bridge , which was the code name used for his mom, Elizabeth.

Preparation for the death of Charles reportedly kicked off after he took the throne, according to former Royal Protection Officer Simon Morgan.

“Unfortunately, as of tomorrow morning, planning for Operation Menai Bridge will start in earnest,” he told “Today”  in September 2022.

“Even the King said in his acceptance that he will take this role for as long as life allows him to. He is 73 years of age, it’s got to be in the back of your mind, and from the police, we’ve got to start planning again for the future.”

How would Operation Menai Bridge unfold?

King Charles III, Prince Harry and Prince William.

After Charles passes away, his eldest son, Prince William, is next in line to become the king and William’s wife, Kate Middleton, would become queen consort.

Several people will be informed about the King’s death — including his family, the prime minister, the cabinet secretary, other senior ministers and officials and the King’s Privy Council Office — by his private secretary.

The royal household will then issue an “official notification” to alert the public, and there are scripts in place on how officials should alert others on the news.

The cabinet secretary will email ministers and senior civil servants and after the message is received, flags at Whitehall would be lowered to half-mast.

King Charles III.

The prime minister will be the first government official to make a statement, the Ministry of Defence will arrange for gun salutes, and a minute of silence for the nation will be announced.

The PM will then meet with the new king, William, who will deliver a broadcast to the nation, much like his father did when Elizabeth died.

For the days leading up to the King’s funeral, there will be several plans in place for different officials to mourn him as his coffin lies in state in Buckingham Palace’s throne room to Westminster Hall.

Charles will be laid to rest in the royal vault in King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle.

What changes are made on the royal family’s website after a monarch dies?

King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

According to Politico, the royal family’s website will change to a black holding page with a short statement confirming the King’s death.

“The UK government website — GOV.UK — will display a black banner at the top. All government departmental social media pages will also show a black banner and change their profile pictures to their departmental crest,” the outlet added.

Why do royals need code names?

Code names were originally given to royals to prevent news of their death from leaking to the press before it was officially announced.

Now they have become more common.

Tom Cruise, 61, drops it low and ‘does the splits’ at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday

Tom Cruise, Victoria Beckham and David Beckham at Victoria's 50th birthday

Tom Cruise was said to be particularly ‘exuberant’ on Saturday evening at Victoria Beckham ’s 50th birthday bash, which saw Posh Spice exit the festivities on David Beckham ’s back.

A-listers from London and beyond flocked to Oswald’s private members club in Mayfair for the reported £250,000 celebration , with attendees including the Top Gun star, 61, Eva Longoria, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tana and Gordon Ramsay, and of course – all of the Spice Girls.

That’s right: Victoria, Mel C, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Geri Horner reunited for a rendition of their hit song Stop, as David posted the moment on social media, sending fans wild.

But perhaps the most surprising story from the night is that Cruise was – firstly – there, and secondly ‘did the splits’, according to the Daily Mail , whose source claims he was ‘particularly enthusiastic’ throughout the evening.

Another guest told The Mirror the Hollywood star ‘seemed the most exuberant of everyone’ and noted that although he’s in his sixties, you would ‘never know it’.

The Mission Impossible actor also rescued a photographer who had a topple outside the venue, proving his impressive agility yet again.

Of course, the whole Beckham clan were out for the occasion, including David, 48, Brooklyn, 25; Romeo, 21; Cruz, 19; and Harper Seven, 12.

Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz, 29, didn’t join the celebrations but wrote a loving birthday message to Victoria on Instagram saying she was ‘so sad’ not to be there.

Victoria – who arrived at the private members’ club with the help of two sticks after she broke her foot earlier this year – wore a light blue, sheer, floor-length gown, looking radiant with her hair in loose waves.

Meanwhile, it was a black tie affair for the Beckham blokes, as they dressed to the nines for a family picture flanking the birthday queen and Harper, who wore a satin white slip dress.

Posh Spice was said to get emotional when her family, including David, gave their speeches.

‘It was all super-sweet and Victoria looked very proud, not to mention a little teary although she did have a few drinks,’ the source told The Mirror.

Victoria re-posted her husband’s video of her and the Spice Girls getting nostalgic to social media, and wrote: ‘Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me!I love you all so much!’

Mel B wore a stunning red gown with a string neck, while Emma opted for a floor-length black velvet number. Mel C also rocked a black gown, with cutouts on the sides, and Geri opted for a white party dress, with ruffled decoration on the chest.

Posh appeared to have the time of her life at her birthday celebration, leaving the venue in the early hours at 3am.

Tom Cruise Is a London Boy

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Sometimes when God closes a door (Taylor Swift says “So long” ), She opens a window (Tom Cruise does the splits). Cruise is living that life in London, and for him that means break-dancing, doing the splits, and watching the British absolutely lose their crumpets. Cruise has lived in London since 2021 and has, in that time, been at the former queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the British Grand Prix, according to the Mercury News . And now he has attended the most British event of all: Posh Spice’s birthday party. Fortunately, he still has the American propensity to do the most. While at the party, Cruise began break-dancing and ended his routine by doing the splits, according to the Daily Mail . “People were absolutely dumbfounded,” a source mentioned. All we’ll say about that is that if there’s one thing the Mission: Impossible franchise could do to s ecure those Imax screens , it just might be a (gay?) club scene in which Cruise distracts the bad guys by jumping into the splits like a Drag Race contestant. Just an idea.
