How to Draw Star Trek

How to Draw Star Trek

star trek

Star Trek is one of the best-known sci-fi franchises ever created with a long and exciting history. That being said, there are many unusual facts about the show that even longtime fans may not be aware of. So what are some things you don’t know about Star Trek other than the fact that red shirts are almost always as good as dead? Here are 5 facts about the franchise that just might surprise even the biggest Trekkie.

1. Spock's skin was originally going to be red.

Gene Roddenberry visualized Spock with not only high eyebrows and pointy ears but also red skin, according to Trek FM. However, this plan fell through after screen tests showed that the red came off as jet black with the black and white television. They then made the switch to yellow, which came off as green on the screen.

The comedian has a long list of great projects under his belt. However, that list is missing one huge one because he turned it down! According to I Am Spock, Paramount offered Murphy a contract to star in a Star Trek movie after his success on Saturday Night Live. Murphy was open about wanting to be a part of the franchise, so multiple scripts were drafted; however, he wasn't impressed with what they came up with. He instead starred in The Golden Child, and the writers switched the movie's tone to be more serious and wrote Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

The appearance happens in the episode, "Descent" where Data, Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, and Stephen Hawking are playing poker. Hawking is pretty much the jokester, while Newton is a total buzzkill. You can find out who wins the game by watching the unusual scene on YouTube.

4. William Shatner has never watched the series.

It's not that uncommon for actors to not watch their work. But this could be very heartbreaking to devoted Trekkies. The star of the hit show hasn't bothered to watch one episode of his work. "I never viewed Star Trek," the actor stated in an interview. "I have not even seen any of the Star Trek movies. I don't watch myself. When I direct and have to look at filmed scenes of myself, I suck."

5. Zachary Quinto couldn't do the Vulcan salute.

Everyone knows the iconic Vulcan salute, however, the latest actor to take on the role couldn't nail it without some tricks. "Zach might do the salute some of the time," an insider said according to Daily Mail, "but just after he'd positioned his fingers the proper way off-camera. In some scenes, he needs to do the salute while speaking his lines, so they ended up utilizing skin-protective superglue, as they use in medical facilities, to stick his fingers together. It was the only way they might make it work."

Let's Draw ‘Star Trek’ Step by Step

In this tutorial we used the following supplies:

  • Pencil 5B

STEPBYSTEP10

star trek cast

Step 1. We begin construction by drawing the symmetry axes. On the vertical axis, mark with strokes where the elements will be. (Pencil B)

Step 2. Draw an ellipse (the upper part of the ship) on the horizontal axis and draw the lower part using the strokes, and then connect the two pieces with the fins with the use of lines. (Pencil B)

Step 3. Add details. On the upper part, draw the windows in the shape of an arc; also add lights and turbines at the bottom. (Pencil B)

Step 4. Remove all unnecessary construction lines. (Pencil B)

Step 5. In the lower areas of the drawing, make a shade in tone. (Pencil B)

Step 6. We start working on the upper part of the ship; we use a pencil and apply it softly. We shade along with the shape of the ship and add shadows on the sides. (Pencil 5B)

Step 7. Go to the lower part, also use a pencil and apply softly for shading and hatch according to the shape of the elements, creating their volume. (Pencil B)

Step 8. The last step is to make the background. Above we draw a silhouette of the earth, and from the bottom of the moon, we draw a line like a cluster of stars between them. We use points as shading, creating with the help of their volume and chiaroscuro; we do everything with a pencil and apply them softly. (Pencil 5B)

20 Incredible Star Trek Concept Art Designs You Need To See

What could have been...

KLINGON CONCEPT

Like all fictional worlds, the Star Trek Universe has more or less been built from the ground up. Sure the shows and movies have used existing locations to stand in for other worlds and used the occasional rented prop (red blinking tubes, we're talking about you), but the majority of what you see in the Star Trek Universe has been painstakingly designed and constructed physically and/or rendered in the digital world.

As with any design process, many concepts were produced and then abandoned, either for reasons of practicality, budget, or because the production simply changed directions. These designs include radical new make ups, costumes that never saw the light of day, even whole sequences that were conceptualized but never filmed.

Of course some of these designs might be considered questionable, but these twenty Star Trek concepts and art designs are a fascinating look at what could've been.

20. Picard's Lecture – Star Trek: Picard

KLINGON CONCEPT

Another tantalizing glimpse via production illustrator Laurent Ben-Mimoun's work depicts a scene from Star Trek: Picard in which Jean-Luc Picard gives a lecture about his time as Captain of the Enterprise.

This artwork features Picard at a podium surrounded by holographic versions of the USS Enterprise-E and Lieutenant Commander Data as he appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The audience Picard is addressing is made up of a number of iconic Star Trek aliens including several Ferengi (who ultimately never appeared in Star Trek: Picard), a Vulcan, and a Klingon (using the Star Trek: Discovery-style makeup).

Live Long and Craft: Fun Star Trek Crafts to Try Out!

by Courtney Constable

In our opinion, there aren’t many things that are better  than crafting. We are big fans of a number of other things though, so we’ll fully admit that our very favourite kind of crafting is the kind that combines more than one thing we love in one place. That’s why, when we were suddenly introduced to the idea of Star Trek crafts, we were absolutely ecstatic! We took to the Internet immediately to track down as many  Star Trek crafts and DIY projects as we could so we have plenty of ideas to choose from.

star trek things to draw

Just in case you love  Star Trek and crafting just as much as we do, here are the 15 coolest tutorials and ideas we came across in our search!

1. Clay Star Trek insignia

star trek things to draw

Have you always been a crafty person but part  of your DIY passion happens through the medium of cosplay? In that case, here’s an awesome tutorial that will help you out with  Star Trek themed outfits and characters!  Chelina shows you how to make an insignia out of clay so that it lasts, even if it’ll get a little more wear and tear than most DIY projects because you’re going to wear it. Clay is also quite simple to add details to and paint!

2. Star Trek detailed sweatshirt

star trek things to draw

Were you pretty open to the idea of creating  Star Trek inspired looks but you’re not sure an actual complete cosplay is the project for you? Then perhaps you’d rather make an everyday garment that just  looks like something from the show? Here’s a tutorial to help you along the way! Lilly Lolly shows you how to how to use patches and trim to alter and embellish a sweatshirt until it looks like a uniform.

3. DIY communicator pins

star trek things to draw

Perhaps you love  Star Trek so much that most of your friends are “trekkies” too and you’d like to throw a themed party for everyone? Then here’s a craft that’s perfect for a whole group!  I Speak Canadian guides you through the simple process of making pretend communicator pins from gold and silver paper that each guest can pin on their shirt.

How to watch Star Trek in order

Whether you're wanting to check out the Original Series or Discovery, figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order is a breeze with this easy guide!

star trek discovery season 3 cast

Is it just us or is figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order getting more and more complex with each passing year? The prospect of watching Star Trek in order would be daunting for even the most decorated of starship captains with multiple series being brought to life on both the big and small screens. But fear not Trekkies - we've got you covered!

If you've ever tried to watch the Marvel movies in order , you'd be forgiven for thinking that was the most complicated franchise on the planet, but we kid you not - it has nothing on Star Trek. The 55-year-old sci-fi franchise includes nine (soon to be 11) TV shows and 13 movies and it spans 1000 years, making for one super complicated and vast timeline.

So, what is the best way to watch Star Trek in order? Well, that depends. For you purists out there, you might like to opt for viewing this franchise by release date, just like all the original Trekkie fans did back in the day. This will allow you to follow along as they did and get a similar experience. While the timeline does jump around, ( Star Trek: Discovery , for example, is set at the end of the 32nd century but was released before Star Trek: Picard , which is set in the 24th century), it gives you a more complete picture.

Because the Star Trek franchise involves movies and TV series that take place at different times, another option is to watch everything in chronological order. This means you get to start with something a little bit more modern, but the one problem with this is that references will often be made to films you've not yet seen, which could make certain elements difficult to follow.

To be honest, just like we recommend in our guide to how to watch the Star Wars movies in order , it really is a matter of personal preference. As long as you have one of the best TVs , you'll find you enjoy this franchise no matter what order you decide to watch it in.

So, without further ado, here's how to watch Star Trek in order - based on release date and in-universe continuity...

Star Trek TV shows and movies in chronological order

This is probably the list you're looking for if you're trying to figure out how to watch Star Trek in order. It's where things get really interesting, as Star Trek movies and TV shows have a habit of jumping around the franchise's chronology with sequels, prequels and bits in between. There are even two distinct timelines – but don't worry, we'll explain all that.

The original ‘Prime’ timeline was started by the Original Series, the Next Generation-era TV shows, and the first ten movies, The alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline, meanwhile, was created in JJ Abrams’ first Star Trek (2009) to allow the familiar Enterprise crew of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov to have new adventures without contradicting canon . To avoid confusion, we've defined the two timelines as separate entities below.

This list doesn't, however, include all of the brief Short Treks – short stories which are mostly set around the Star Trek: Discovery era – and adventures where Starfleet crews time-travelled to the eras before any of the shows/movies are set (eg visits to 1986 in The Voyage Home and 2063 in First Contact). We've also left out upcoming Discovery spin-off Star Trek: Section 31 , since it's not yet in production. (Also, we're not entirely sure exactly when it'll be set.)

Let's start with everything in one big list.

  • Star Trek: Enterprise (seasons 1-4)
  • ‘The Cage’
  • Star Trek: Discovery (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • Star Trek: The Original Series  (seasons 1-3)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
  • Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
  • Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
  • Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier
  • Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
  • Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 1-5)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 6-7), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Generations
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 3-4), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: First Contact
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 5-6), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 3-4)
  • Star Trek: Insurrection
  • S tar Trek: Deep Space Nine (season 7), Star Trek: Voyager (season 5)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 6-7)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks
  • Star Trek: Prodigy
  • Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences
  • Star Trek: Picard
  • Star Trek: Discovery (season 3-)
  • Short Treks: 'Calypso'

If you watch in the order given above, you'll get a continuous ‘history’ of the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 32nd centuries according to the Star Trek timeline. That said, you will notice some odd discrepancies – thanks to the time in which respective shows were made, the technology in prequel show Star Trek: Discovery is significantly more advanced than what Kirk and Spock used in the Original Series.

Below, we'll explain how the different eras of the shows and movies break down for context.

Note that Gene Roddenberry's original pre-Kirk Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage', is counted as an instalment of the Original Series. You'll usually find it listed as a bonus episode as part of season one when you're watching it on streaming services.

Star Trek: Enterprise era (22nd century) Begins and ends with: Star Trek Enterprise seasons 1-4

About a century before James T Kirk and his crew embark on their famous five-year mission in Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Jonathan Archer leads Earth's first steps into the wider universe.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series era (23rd century) Begins with: 'The Cage' Ends with: Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)

For many this is the most familiar era of Star Trek, since it involves Kirk, Spock and the classic Enterprise crew.

This section of the Trek timeline kicks off with the original unaired Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage' . Next up in franchise chronology are the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , which work as a prequel to the Original Series (they even feature a younger version of Spock), but it's all change in season 3 – the events of the season 2 finale send the crew into the distant future of the 32nd century. More on that later...

Upcoming spin-off Strange New Worlds will follow the adventures of Captain Pike, Number One and Spock on the Enterprise after the USS Discovery travelled to the future. And at some point after that, Captain James T Kirk will take command of Starfleet's most famous ship – a role he filled throughout The Original Series , The Animated Series and the first six Star Trek movies ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture , The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ).

The latest point we've seen (so far) in the 23rd century era is James T Kirk being taken away by the Nexus ribbon in the prologue of Star Trek: Generations . This is the event that allows Kirk to meet Picard when the Next Generation crew take on the mantle of headlining the big screen franchise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation era (24th century) Begins with: Star Trek: The Next Generation Ends with: Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences

The richest, most complicated period in Star Trek chronology. During The Next Generation era, Star Trek was experimenting with the idea of a shared universe years before Marvel got in on the act, with three TV shows (TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager ) and four movies ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) interweaving through the same timeline – Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway even shows up in Star Trek: Nemesis as a newly promoted admiral.

New animated comedy spin-off Lower Decks is set a year after Picard and the Next Generation crew's final mission in Star Trek: Nemesis, while Nickelodeon kids' cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy will see Kate Mulgrew reprising her role as Voyager's captain, Kathryn Janeway. That suggests it will presumably be set at a similar point in the Star Trek timeline.

In JJ Abrams' first Star Trek movie (2009), the destruction of Romulus and Spock Prime's accidental trip back to the pre-Original Series era (in the Kelvin timeline) also take place after the events of Nemesis.

In the list above, we've shown how the movies (roughly) fit into the chronology of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

Star trek: Picard

Picard era (turn of the 25th century) Begins with: Picard Ends with: ???

Aside from glimpses of the destruction of Romulus in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Picard gives us our first post-Star Trek: Nemesis look at what the United Federation of Planets has become.

Since we last saw Jean-Luc Picard, he's retired to his vineyard in France, an android uprising on Mars has led to a ban on all synthetic life, and a disabled Borg Cube (known simply as the 'Artifact') is being mined for technology.

star trek discovery season 3 story

Distant future (32nd century) Begins with : Star Trek: Discovery season 2 (finale) Ends with: ???

In order to save the galaxy, the brave crew of the USS Discovery set off on a one-way mission 900 years into the future in Star Trek: Discovery 's season 2 finale. Their 32nd century destination is new territory for Star Trek – thanks to the mysterious 'Burn', most of the dilithium in the galaxy has been destroyed, making warp travel impossible. As a result, the Federation is a shadow of its former self – even Earth has decided to go it alone.

This isn't, however, the furthest Star Trek has ventured into the future – Short Trek ' Calypso ' is set on the Discovery in a distant future where the ship's computer has become sentient.

Star Trek's alternate 'Kelvin' timeline explained

A still from Star trek Beyond

In 2009's Star Trek movie directed by JJ Abrams, Spock Prime tries to save Romulus from a supernova, inadvertently creates a black hole while doing so, and gets pulled into the past, along with Romulan mining vessel the Narada. Once there, the Narada attacks the USS Kelvin on the day James T Kirk is born. The ship is destroyed as Kirk's father, George, sacrifices himself to save the rest of the crew.

When all that happens, the alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline is created, with events unfolding in parallel (but with remarkable similarity) to the original Prime timeline.

Got all that? There are just three movies set in the Kelvin timeline:

  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek into Darkness
  • Star Trek Beyond

Considering The Original Series was cancelled after just three seasons in 1969, it's remarkable that Star Trek is still around half a century later. But as the show's popularity grew in syndication on US TV, Trek fandom became a big enough force for the five-year mission to resume via Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973. Most of the original cast – with the notable exception of Walter Koenig (Chekov) – were enticed back to voice their characters.

Then, helped by Star Wars turning sci-fi into the hottest genre in Hollywood, Star Trek beamed onto the big screen with 1979's The Motion Picture . The original crew headed up five more movies ( The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ) before bowing out in 1991. The ’80s also gave the world a hint of the Star Trek that never was when 'The Cage' , the original unaired pilot, was released on VHS in 1986 (it appeared on TV two years later). Of the pilot crew, only Leonard Nimoy's Spock went on to reprise his role in the TV show, though footage from 'The Cage' was used extensively in the Original Series’ only two-parter, 'The Menagerie'.

While the Enterprise was making it big in cinemas, the franchise returned to its TV roots in 1987 with The Next Generation . Set over 70 years after Kirk and Spock's final mission, it featured a new crew – led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard – on board a new starship Enterprise. The Next Generation was arguably even more successful than the Original Series, spawning two spin-off series: Deep Space Nine (which began in 1993) played with the Trek format by focusing on a space station, while Voyager (1995) dumped its crew on the other side of the galaxy, hundreds of light years from home.

The Next Generation crew also fronted four movies of their own ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) between 1995 and 2002.

After Voyager came to an end in 2001, Star Trek left the Next Generation era behind, and went in a completely different direction – Star Trek: Enterprise was a prequel set a century before Kirk and Spock's adventures. Enterprise lasted only four seasons, however (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all made it to seven), and was canceled in 2005.

These were also dark times for the movie branch of the Trek franchise, as the disappointing box office performance of Nemesis had put the film saga on hiatus – it wasn't until 2009 that Star Trek warped back onto the big screen.

Future Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams (already hot property as director of Mission: Impossible 3 and co-creator of Lost) gave the franchise an action blockbuster makeover, recasting Kirk, Spock and the rest of the original crew as rookies on their first mission. The reboot, simply titled Star Trek , made more than twice as much at the box office as any of its predecessors, and two sequels ( Star Trek into Darkness , Star Trek Beyond ) followed.

Star Trek belatedly returned to TV in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery . Set a decade before the Original Series, it was a darker, more serialized Trek than we’d seen before – more in tune with the prestige shows of the so-called Golden Age of TV. As it’s turned out, it was just the beginning of Star Trek's renewed assault on TV...

A series of brief Short Treks appeared online ahead of Discovery's second season, while The Next Generation follow-up Star Trek: Picard left spacedock in January 2020. Animated series Lower Decks followed in August 2020, and Discovery spin-off Strange New Worlds – featuring Anson Mount's Captain Pike, Rebecca Romijn's Number One and Ethan Peck's Spock on the pre-Kirk Enterprise – is now in production.

There's also another cartoon offering heading for the Alpha Quadrant, in the form of animated kids show Star Trek: Prodigy.

And there's potentially even more to come, as the much-talked about Michelle Yeoh vehicle Section 31 is still in development. But with Paramount Plus programming boss Julie McNamara telling Variety that the streaming service's current aim is to debut "a new Trek every quarter", we may have to wait for Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks and/or Strange New Worlds to stand aside before we get a new TV iteration of Trek.

To keep things simple, all the shows above are listed by the date their first episode aired. While the chronology does jump around if you watch Star Trek in order of release date, there are some benefits. For example, the prequel shows assume a fair bit of knowledge of earlier series, like the Borg's appearance in Star Trek: Enterprise episode 'Regeneration', or Star Trek: Discovery's revelations about the ultimate fate of Christopher Pike (the Enterprise captain in 'The Cage', who later shows up in 'The Menagerie'). Moments like that undoubtedly make more sense in the context of later events in the Star Trek timeline.

10 'Star Trek' Technologies That Actually Came True

star trek things to draw

"Beam us up." It's one of the most iconic lines in television history. It's something often heard in the hit science fiction television series "Star Trek" and all of the television shows and movies that followed.

The transporter essentially dematerialized a human body at one point only to rematerialize it in the transporter bay on the ship. Somehow, it broke down atoms and molecules within the body -- scattered them through the vacuum of space without losing a single one from point A to point B, then voila, that person re-emerged out of thin air. Sounds pretty cool, though impossible, right? But what if there was such a device?

The truth is, you can forget about a transporter. No one has been able to realize such a concept. But that doesn't mean some of the ideas that seemed far-fetched when the show debuted in 1966 haven't become a reality. In this article, we feature the top 10 technologies from Star Trek that actually did come to fruition, listed in no particular order. Some of them may surprise you.

  • Transparent Aluminum (Armor)
  • Communicators
  • Tractor Beams
  • Universal Translator
  • Geordi's VISOR
  • Torpedo Coffins
  • Telepresence

10: Transparent Aluminum (Armor)

The fourth installment of the original "Star Trek" movies is perhaps the most endearing to fans. The crew returns to modern-day Earth. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the gang ditch a Klingon Bird of Prey spacecraft in the San Francisco Bay after narrowly missing the Golden Gate Bridge while flying blind in a storm. You may remember the scene -- but how many of you remember Scotty introducing transparent aluminum for the first time?

In the flick, Scotty traded the formula matrix for transparent aluminum -- a huge engineering advancement -- for sheets of plexiglass in order to build a tank to transport the two humpback whales (George and Gracie) to the Earth of their time. The claim was that you'd be able to replace six-inch (14-centimeter) thick Plexiglas with one-inch (2.5-centimeter) thick see-through aluminum.

It may sound impossible, but there is such a thing as transparent aluminum armor or aluminum oxynitride (ALON) as it's more commonly known. ALON is a ceramic material that starts out as a powder before heat and pressure turn it into a crystalline form similar to glass. Once in the crystalline form, the material is strong enough to withstand bullets. Polishing the molded ALON strengthens the material even more. The Air Force has tested the material in hopes of replacing windows and canopies in its aircraft. Transparent aluminum armor is lighter and stronger than bulletproof glass . Less weight, stronger material -- what's not to like?

9: Communicators

star trek things to draw

Whenever Captain Kirk left the safe confines of the Enterprise, he did so knowing it could be the last time he saw his ship. Danger was never far away. And when in distress and in need of help in a pinch, he could always count on Bones to come up with a miracle cure, Scotty to beam him up or Spock to give him some vital scientific information. He'd just whip out his communicator and place a call.

Fast-forward 30 years and wouldn't you know it, it seems like everyone carries a communicator. We just know them as cell phones . Actually, the communicators in "Star Trek" were more like the push-to-talk, person-to-person devices first made popular by Nextel in the mid to late '90s. The "Star Trek" communicator had a flip antenna that when opened, activated the device. The original flip cell phones are perhaps distant cousins. Whatever the case, the creators of "Star Trek" were on to something because you'd be hard-pressed to find many people without a cell phone these days.

In later incarnations of the "Star Trek" franchise, the communicators evolved to being housed in the Starfleet logo on the crewman's chest. With the tap of a finger, communication between crewmembers became even easier. Vocera Communications has a similar product that can link people on the same network inside a designated area like an office or a building by using the included software over a wireless LAN. The B2000 communication badge weighs less than two ounces and can be worn on the lapel of a coat or shirt and allows clear two-way communication. It's even designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria so it's suitable for doctors [source: Vocera ].

8: Hypospray

The creative team behind "Star Trek" found spiffy ways to spice up some activities we endure on a day-to-day basis. Take medical treatment, for example: Not many people enjoy getting a flu shot, and in "Star Trek," inoculating patients was one of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy's primary duties. It seemed not an episode went by that Bones wasn't giving someone a shot of some sort of space vaccine . But what was more fascinating was the contraption he used.

Hypospray is a form of hypodermic injection of medication. A hypospray injection is forced under the skin (a subcutaneous injection) with high air pressure. The air pressure shoots the liquid vaccine deep enough into the skin that no needle is required. The real-world application is known as a jet injector .

Jet injectors have been in use for many years. In fact, the technology predates "Star Trek." Jet injectors were originally designed to be used in mass vaccinations. Jet injecting is safer (no needles to pass along infectious disease) and faster in administering vaccines. Similar in appearance to an automotive paint gun, jet injection systems can use a larger container for the vaccine, thus allowing medical personnel to inoculate more people quicker.

7: Tractor Beams

When NASA needs to make repairs to the Hubble Space Telescope, astronauts have to be specially trained to get out of the Space Shuttle for extravehicular activity. They also have to learn how to work within the confines of their space suits, with thick gloves on. Wouldn't it be nice to just bring the telescope inside, where repairs wouldn't be so challenging and dangerous?

In science fiction, space ships including the Starship Enterprise snatch each other up using tractor beams. In some cases, large vessels have a tractor beam strong enough to prevent smaller vessels from escaping the gravitational force. So is this science even plausible?

Yes and no. Optical tweezers are as close as you're going to get to a legitimate tractor beam on current-day Earth. Scientists have harnessed small lasers into beams capable of manipulating molecules and moving them with precision. Optical tweezers use a focused laser to trap and suspend microscopic particles in an optical trap. Scientists can use optical tweezers to trap and remove bacteria and sort cells. Optical tweezers are used primarily in studying the physical properties of DNA. While the beams used in optical tweezers aren't strong enough to dock the space shuttle to the International Space Station, it's a start in that direction.

"Set phasers to stun" -- another oft-heard command given to the Enterprise crew. The crew often relied on the stun setting of their fictitious weapon of choice known as a phaser. Armed with a phaser, Kirk and his colleagues had the ability to kill or more desirably, stun their adversaries and render them incapacitated.

Actually, stun guns have been around for some time. In fact, electricity has been used for punishment and to control livestock as far back as the 1880s. But it wasn't until 1969 when a guy named Jack Cover invented the first Taser that the stun gun was most realized. The Taser fails to kill like the phaser did, yet, it packs enough of an electrical punch to render its victim disorientated, if not completely incapacitated.

Unlike the phaser, the Taser and other stun guns must come in physical contact with the target in order to have any effect. Tasers take care of this by projecting two electrodes, connected by wires, which attach to the target's skin. Once in contact, the handheld unit transfers electricity to the target, thus having the stun effect. Stun guns with stationary electrical contact probes are somewhat less effective because while they have a similar effect on the target, you have to be much closer (within arm's length) in order to zap your target.

Something more along the lines of the phaser may be in development. Applied Energetic has developed Laser Guided Energy and Laser Induced Plasma Energy technologies that are said to transmit high-voltage bursts of energy to a target [source: Applied Energetics ]. In other words, these pulses of energy would stun the target and limit collateral damage. So a true phaser may soon be a reality.

5: Universal Translator

Imagine if no matter what country you visited, no matter what the culture, you could understand everything the indigenous people were saying. It sure would make traveling easier. Take that thought to another level like say, if you were planet hopping like the crew onboard the Enterprise. Fortunately for Captain Kirk and his peers, they had a universal translator .

The characters in "Star Trek" relied on a small device that when spoken into, would translate the words into English. Guess what? The technology exists for us in the real world. There are devices that let you speak phrases in English and it will spit back to you the same rhetoric in a specified language. The only problem is, these devices only work for certain predetermined languages.

A true universal translator like the one on the show may not be a reality, but the technology is available. Voice recognition has advanced considerably since its inception. But computers have yet to be able to learn languages. Computers would be able to theoretically gather the information much faster than a human brain, but a software program is dependent on actual data. Someone has to take the time and expense to put it together and make it available, which is probably why these systems focus on more popular languages.

4: Geordi's VISOR

star trek things to draw

When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" thrust the love of everything "Star Trek" back into popular culture, the quirky Mr. Spock and crass Bones McCoy and others were supplanted by a new cast. One of the most popular characters on the new show was engineer Geordi LaForge.

What made Geordi unique, perhaps even mysterious, was his funky eyewear. Geordi was blind, but after a surgical operation and aided through the use of a device called VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement), Geordi could see throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Though it may sound far-fetched, in reality, similar technology exists that may someday bring sight back to the blind.

In 2005, a team of scientists from Stanford University successfully implanted a small chip behind the retina of blind rats that enabled them to pass a vision recognition test. The science behind the implants, or bionic eyes as they're commonly referred to, works much the way Geordi's VISOR did. The patient receives the implants behind the retina, then wears a pair of glasses fitted with a video camera. Light enters the camera and is processed through a small wireless computer, which then broadcasts it as infrared LED images on the inside of the glasses. Those images are reflected back into the retina chips to stimulate photodiodes. The photodiodes replicate the lost retinal cells then change light into electrical signals which in turn send nerve pulses to the brain.

What it all means is that in theory, a person with 20/400 sight (blind), due to the loss of retinal cells from retinitis pigmentosa, can obtain 20/80 sight. It's not good enough to pass the driving test (normal vision is considered 20/20) but it's good enough to read billboards and go about your day without the aid of a seeing-eye dog.

3: Torpedo Coffins

In the second installment of the "Star Trek" movie franchise, the beloved Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, died after saving the Starship Enterprise from certain disaster. The movie culminated with the crew firing Spock's corpse out of the torpedo bay in a coffin shaped like one of the ship's weapons, the photon torpedo .

Believe it or not, you too could be laid to eternal rest in your own Federation-approved photon torpedo casket. OK, it may not technically be Federation-approved since there is no such thing as the United Federation of Planets (UFP) but the coffins are, in fact, very real.

Designed by Eternal Image, the "Star Trek" coffin was slated to be available early 2009, but is still not for sale as of this writing. The price is yet to be determined. If the fan would prefer to be cremated , the company also plans to offer a "Star Trek" urn as well.

2: Telepresence

In 1966, the idea of interacting with each other while separated by the void of space seemed as far fetched as, well the idea of being in space. That's precisely what the idea of telepresence is.

Telepresence is more than just video conferencing . The visual aspect is important and immersion is vital. In other words, the more convincing the illusion of telepresence, the more you feel like you're there.

In 2008, AT&T teamed up with Cisco in delivering the industry's first in-depth telepresence experience. The key to Cisco's TelePresence is the combination of audio, video and ambient lighting working together. These telepresence kits are designed to mirror surroundings and mimic sounds so that users on each side of the video conference will feel as though the images on the screen are in the same room with them. For instance, the people in boardroom A will see the people on the screen in boardroom B as though they are sitting across the table from them. The ambient lighting and room features are constructed to mirror each other. Sure, these telepresence kits are much more advanced than anything drummed up on "Star Trek," but perhaps that's because the show sparked our imagination so many years ago.

1: Tricorders

star trek things to draw

How many of you remember that instrument Mr. Spock used to always carry over his shoulder, especially when the crew (usually consisting of only Spock and Captain Kirk) first surveyed a new planet? That was a tricorder.

One of the more useful instruments available to "Star Trek" personnel, variations of the tricorder (medical, engineering or scientific) were used to measure everything from oxygen levels to detecting diseases. Often times the tricorder gave an initial analysis of the new environment. So, what's the real-world tie-in? NASA employs a handheld device called LOCAD, which measures for unwanted microorganisms such as E. coli, fungi and salmonella onboard the International Space Station [source: Coulter ]. Beyond that, two handheld medical devices may soon help doctors examine blood flow and check for cancer, diabetes or bacterial infection.

Scientists at Loughborough University in England use photoplethysmography technology in a handheld device that can monitor the functions of the heart. Meanwhile, researchers at Harvard Medical School have developed a small device that utilizes similar technology found in MRI machines that non-invasively inspect the body. Using nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, this device would be sensitive enough to measure samples of as few as 10 possible infectious bacteria. This kind of sensitivity (800 times more sensitive than sensing equipment currently used in medical labs) could revolutionize the way doctors diagnose disease [source: Mick ].

Parish episode 5 recap: what happened to gray's son & 9 other reveals.

Parish episode 5 is finally here, and here are all of the biggest reveals that set up the Parish season 1 finale, including a major death reveal.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Parish episode 5!

  • Rose decides not to call the police, following Gray's advice to avoid Anton's gang's retaliation.
  • The Horse confronts Anton, but his plan backfires, leading to a showdown in Parish episode 5.
  • Gray enlists Colin to help dispose of the bodies, revealing more about his criminal past to his family.

Parish episode 5 is finally here, and here are the 10 biggest reveals from the new episode, including what happened to Gray's son. Parish has been building up a lot of tension throughout its firs four episodes, with the gang war backing Gray Parish into a corner that he can't seem to get out of. However, Parish episode 5 really kicks things up a notch, making Gray's situation with Anton and the Horse even more complicated.

AMC's new crime drama show Parish is finally here , with the first four episodes of Giancarlo Esposito's all-new highly anticipated series now released. Parish is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other acclaimed AMC series like Breaking Bad , Mad Men , and Better Call Saul , with Giancarlo Esposito returning to the network in order to headline the cast of Parish . Parish follows Gray Parish, a retired criminal driver who again becomes entangled in his life of crime, with him only wishing to escape the gangs of New Orleans and protect his family.

10 Rose Decides Not To Call The Police

Based on gray's advice.

Parish episode 5 picks up right where Parish episode 4 ended , with Gray returning home after Anton held Gray's wife and daughter hostage . In episode 4, Rose was shown killing one of their captors, with Mak distracting Anton's goon while Rose beat his head in with a weapon. Parish episode 5 confirmed that they also managed to kill the other man, with Gray, Rose, and Mak having to decide what to do with the bodies.

Rose initially wants to call the police, with her believing that they won't get in trouble due to the killings being in self-defense. Gray, however, knows that this would only make them more vulnerable to Anton's gang, with him attempting to convince his wife not to call the police. In the end, Rose decides not to, with her and Gray then having to figure out what to do with the bodies.

Parish Episode 3 Recap: Who Is Anton & 9 Other Reveals

9 the horse confronts anton, but his plan doesn't work.

Parish episode 4 also ended with the Horse deciding to confront Anton, teasing a tense face-off that would occur in season 5. After opening on Gray reuniting with his family, Parish episode 5 then sees the Horse appear at some sort of political event, with him hoping to confront Anton and challenge him for setting up the assassination and ensuing gang war.

The Horse manages to get a hold of Anton , with him putting on a show in front of the crowd. This causes Anton to ask if they can go into a private space in order to continue their conversation, with Anton undoubtedly not wanting to draw unneeded attention to the duo. Thus, the two duck into a room off of the main hallway, leading to them finally meeting face-to-face early in Parish episode 5.

8 Gray Gets Colin To Help With The Dead Bodies

Even though the police could've done it.

Back at the Parish household, Gray provides an alternative solution for dealing with the dead bodies, with him enlisting the help of Skeet Ulrich's Parish character Colin . Colin and Gray have butted heads throughout Parish so far, but Colin is still one of Gray's only friends who knows about his life of crime, meaning that enlisting his help in getting rid of the two dead bodies makes a lot of sense.

It isn't exactly known what Colin does to help out with the situation, although the dead bodies seem to be taken care of later in the episode. While Colin is working on getting rid of the bodies, Gray and his family begin making other preparations, hoping to skip town and avoid the wrath of Anton's gang. Because of this, Colin's role is comparatively small in Parish episode 5.

7 Horse Is Called Back To Cape Town & Zenzo Is Put In Charge

And it's all thanks to anton.

While talking to Anton in the room, the Horse attempts to show that he can handle anything that Anton throws at him. However, Anton knows something that the Horse doesn't, explaining that the Horse's fatal flaw is that there is a lot that he doesn't know. The Horse then receives a phone call from his father, with the conversation containing some tragic news.

Upon getting on the phone, it is demanded that the Horse return to Cape Town, which is all the way in South Africa. The Horse is being punished for his actions when dealing with Anton, with the gang being upset that he started a war. In the Horse's absence, his brother Zenzo will be put in charge of the New Orleans branch , something that definitely upsets the Horse, causing him to disobey the orders.

6 Zenzo Set Up The Hit On Horse For His Father

Zenzo was the mole all along.

Upon learning that the Horse is being sent to South Africa and Zenzo is in charge, Shamiso decides to confront Zenzo about the situation, believing that something is fishy. Upon doing so, Zenzo makes a big reveal, with him telling Shamiso that he was the mole that organized the hit on their brother.

As it turns out, the siblings' father made a deal with Anton, with the price being the Horse's head. Thus, Zenzo leaked information of the Horse's route to Anton, allowing them to ambush him. Shamiso is upset that Zenzo knowingly put the Horse's son in danger, and while Zenzo doesn't seem happy about having done so, he does point out that getting rid of the Horse has caused both of them to move up in the gang. However, this will come back to bite them.

5 Gray Burns His Own House Down

And hopes to get the insurance money.

Meanwhile, Gray and his family have left New Orleans and are on the run , with him hoping to get a head start on Anton's gang. Firstly, Gray decides that he needs to get rid of the evidence, with him making the decision to burn his house down. Using a stack of cups, Gray sets up an elaborate chain reaction that will burn his house down several hours after his family is gone, with this plan turning out to be successful.

By the time the building ignites, Gray and his family are long gone, although they are indecisive about where they want to go or what their next move should be. Gray hopes to get the insurance money from the house fire and sell his business, allowing the family to start a new life far away from New Orleans and Anton's gang. Before this plan is enacted, though, Gray ends up taking some different actions.

4 Gray Revels His Criminal History To His Family

Finally telling them the truth.

Gray keeping his past a secret from his family has been a major element of the series all the way since Parish episode 1 , but Gray finally makes the decision to be open in episode 5. Gray goes into detail about his history, explaining that he stole his first car at age 16 and that he continued doing it because he was good at it. He explains all the way up until the modern day, giving context for why Anton is after them.

Rose is surprised by some of the details, but admits that she always knew that Gray had a shady past, saying that she simply didn't want to know details. Although Rose knew about some of it, this is all new information to Mak, however, who seems to be shocked about her father's history of illegal activities.

3 Rose Has Been Hiding Maddox's Gun

But she reveals it now.

After Gray decides to reveal his criminal past, the rest of the Parish family decides that they all have some secrets to share. Rose then goes to a backpack and pulls out a gun , with her explaining that it actually belonged to their son Maddox.

Parish Episode 2 Recap: THAT Major Character Death & 8 Other Reveals

According to Rose, she found Maddox's gun in his bedroom after his death, not knowing what it was for. However, she decided not to tell anybody, with her only using it to stop Anton's two men in Parish episode 5. Gray and Mak are shocked at the revelation that Maddox owned a gun, with this being a further sign of the trouble he was in leading up to his death. While this is a big reveal, it isn't the biggest bit of information surrounding Maddox's death that appears in Parish episode 5.

2 Horse Gives Gray A Recording Of His Son’s Death

Revealing how he died.

Before the Parish family was able to leave New Orleans, one of the Horse's men tossed Gray a package, with him not knowing what it was. Later in the episode, it is revealed to be a recording from the night that Gray's son died , with it featuring an unknown man explaining that he accidentally shot a kid who looked like he had a gun.

This recording causes Gray to spiral, with him reliving many of the memories he had with Maddox before playing the recording for his family. It becomes clear that Anton had some kind of role in the death of Gray's son, causing Gray to leave his family and furiously drive back to New Orleans, hoping to get answers. This is one of the darkest moments in Parish so far, perfectly setting up the season 1 finale.

1 The Horse Is Using Maddox's Death To Control Gray

Setting up the season finale.

Upon returning to New Orleans, it is revealed that Gray called the Horse on the way, with him presumably wanting to enlist the Horse's help in getting revenge for his son's death. However, the Horse has plans for Gray, with him seemingly using the death of Gray's son as a bargaining chip to control him.

The Horse promises that he will help Gray if Gray can complete a task for him first, with this presumably having to do with getting revenge on Anton. The episode ends at this point, setting up the team up between Gray and the Horse for the exciting season finale. All of the pieces are in place for the gang war to reach its climax, with this storyline and more presumably being concluded up next in the Parish season 1 finale.

The Best Gaming Laptops Under $1,000: Boost Your Games For Less

There aren’t quite as many new offerings this week, but still a few interesting-looking picks. We’ll start with a new mystery on Netflix.

Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix — April 25th)

So think a modern-day Hardy Boys set in the UK and the teenage detectives are actually dead. They’re dead boy detectives who solve all sorts of spooky afterlife mysteries. This one is actually doing really well with both critics and audiences alike, which means Netflix will probably cancel it after one season.

Knuckles (Paramount+ — April 26th)

The highly-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog TV spinoff Knuckles should be a fun diversion for the whole family. It’s not doing terribly well with reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences seem to be enjoying it.

THEM: The Scare (Prime Video — April 25th)

Rocking a 100% critic and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, THEM: The Scare looks pretty damn scary. Set several decades after the events of THEM: Covenant, the new season follows LAPD detective, Dawn Reeve, who finds herself investigating a gruesome murder. As she gets closer to the truth, something wicked this way comes.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (Hulu — April 26th)

A documentary about Bon Jovi. I suspect this will have a pretty passionate niche audience.

Monkey Man (VOD — April 23rd)

Dev Patel stars and directs in this John Wick- esque action movie. I’ve been waiting for this to come to streaming. It looks like a lot of fun.

There are a bunch of shows currently airing—far too many to keep up with, especially since I’ve been on a BritBox kick, watching stuff like Blue Lights and Line Of Duty— so instead of posting trailers for each of these, here’s a brief summary of a good chunk of currently airing TV shows that should be on your radar.

Missing from this list is Shogun, which aired its finale this past week. I really enjoyed the Japanese historical drama, but had somewhat mixed feelings on the finale. You can read my review here.

  • The Sympathizer is a Vietnam-era spy show about a Viet Cong operative who infiltrates the South Vietnamese army and eventually comes to the United States, starring Robert Downey Jr. airing every Sunday on HBO / Max.
  • Sugar on Apple TV+ stars Colin Farrell as a private detective in a neo-noir missing persons case. New episodes come out each Friday.
  • Under the Bridge based on a true story—and the true-crime book by Rebecca Godfrey—this looks into the murder of a teen girl in British Columbia and the teen girls accused of her murder.
  • Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth season is airing every Thursday on Paramount+. I’m behind on all things Star Trek, truth be told.
  • Parish on AMC with Giancarlo Esposito. I tried the first episode of this out and got a little bored and decided to watch something else. I have not yet returned to this show, and I’m not sure I will. But Esposito is terrific in The Gentlemen on Netflix which I’m absolutely loving. What a fun show!
  • A Gentleman in Moscow on Paramount+ starring Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, about a Russian aristocrat under house arrest following the Soviet Revolution. New episodes come out on Sundays.
  • X-Men 97 on Disney+ brings back the classic, vintage feel of the old X-Men series. It continues airing on Wednesdays and really is a lot of fun.
  • Mary and George on Starz. A sex-fueled historical drama of political intrigue, deception and black humor set during the reign of King James I—loosely based on true events. Julianne Moore is the main draw here. New episodes air each Friday.

In Theaters

This may be a streaming guide but I always try to post one or two theatrical releases as well because going to the movies is awesome.

Boy Kills World — April 26th

This looks like a fun action movie to sort of turn your brain off to, starring Bill Skarsgård as a guy simply called “Boy” who sets off on a quest to avenge his murdered family at the hands of a deranged matriarch in a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty. Boy himself is not only an orphan, but deaf and mute. He’s trained by a mysterious shaman and then it’s off to the martial arts races for some good old-fashioned revenge. ( It certainly looks better than Skarsgård’s other upcoming revenge flick, the rebooted Crow ).

Further reading from your humble guide:

  • Netflix’s best new original series is stressing me out.
  • Does Shogun’s Lord Toranaga have a Dumbledore problem?
  • One of the year’s most diabolically twisted movies is now streaming.
