Inspired by the Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness films, the newest Stern machine puts players in Captain James Kirk’s chair of the U.S.S. Enterprise, embarking on a journey to protect and defend the planets of the Federation.

Stern’s Star Trek pinball machine features all the bells and whistles a Star Trek fan would desire. With adrenalin-filled battles, high-definition artwork, cosmic LED lighting and classic musical scores, the Star Trek game will evoke the sensation of flying through space at Warp Speed to rescue Spock and defeat the U.S.S. Vengeance.  The newest game from Stern includes an animated battleship, three lightning fast ramps, three flippers, resettable memory drop targets and much more.

Star Trek is Stern’s first all-LED Pro Model. The playfield features seven multicolored LED paths that lead gamers on easy-to-understand color-coded routes. There are six missions for casual players matched by 18 complex treks to immerse enthusiast players deeper in the game. As players attack an oncoming threat with three action-centered flippers, the all-LED playfield will captivate onlookers and enhance the player experience with features like phaser flashes and photon torpedoes.

Players will instinctively know exactly what to do when they approach Star Trek pinball – destroy the U.S.S. Vengeance, a key action-packed feature on the playing field. From the very start, players will have the chance to unlock special opportunities, collect tantalizing bonus features and win a series of accolades called The Captain’s Chair. Star Trek aficionados can expect the classic battle between the heroic Enterprise team and the villainous Khan as well as run-ins with Nero, Klingons and the Narada.

A History of Star Trek at the arcades

starfleetlogo

With important dates, new movies and a TV show coming along based on Star Trek, I thought it would be appropriate to take a look at the history of Trek in arcades. I’ve long been a fan of Star Trek – I was five years old when Star Trek: the Next Generatio n came around and I was hooked on the show immediately. Of course where I am also an arcade fan, what better way to enjoy both than to look back at the history of Trek in arcades and how it has been involved in the coin-op arcade industry. This will include pinball machines and games that didn’t carry the title of Star Trek but were essentially Trek without the license.

This article was originally published on April 2nd, 2009. Updated on 9/8/2022

Pseudo Star Trek

startrek72

For-Play’s Star Trek did change one thing from Computer Space though – it simplified the controls from several buttons down to a joystick. Otherwise it was the same game but it didn’t really capture anyone’s attention at the time and it would not be long after that that Atari would release Pong which then started the video game craze. It is interesting to note that this Star Trek game was technically the second coin-op video game and not Pong but it probably would have done a little better had they not just decided to rip-off Computer Space pixel for pixel. That said, I am not aware of anyone ever finding a working example of this machine in the wild so it is possible that it never got produced or it saw a very small production run.

2: Starship 1 (Atari; 1977) – While this does not carry the name Star Trek anywhere on the game, when you play it is quite obvious that Starship 1 was heavily influenced by the show. One might say that Starship 1 takes place in an alternate ST universe with you piloting the “Starship Atari” to save the Federation.

star trek voyager pinball machine

At your disposal is a yoke controller with one button to fire your phasers, another on the control panel to fire your “proton” torpedoes and a throttle control for speed. In the game you pilot the starship, shooting down enemy ships that appear on the screen while trying to avoid crashing into planets that constantly appear in your path. It is from the enemies where the game takes on even more from Star Trek – some ships are very close in design to  Miranda-class ships (in fact this game pre-dates Star Trek II). It also used other designs that were obviously from Star Trek like a weird version of the Doomsday Machine (which have a huge face with a tongue sticking out) and Klingon BattleCruisers.

This game was notable for its detailed graphics (for the time) and the sprite scaling effect that would become very popular in the late 80s.

3:  Space Wars by (Vectorbeam/Cinematronics; 1977) – The first mass-produced arcade game to use a vector monitor happened to be the best selling game that year and the highest grossing one to boot. Launching the same year as Star Wars certainly helped, but it also happened to have some Star Trek influence to it. The space war concept was not anything new – students had been creating a game like this for computers at universities for some time already (such as Galaxy Game from 1971 ) but this would mark the first time that the concept would reach the public.

The idea for this game was enhanced by space battles people had seen in Star Trek with the Enterprise engaging in those classic stand-off space battles. In fact for Space Wars, the second player ship is actually a Constitution-class starship. The game came in a huge cabinet and featured a control set that would be copied in later games like Asteroids and it also featured a number of variations that players could choose from, such as a sun or black hole at the center and more. There were two versions of this, which has caused a little confusion – the original was by Vectorbeam and I believe launched in 1976, while Cinematronics bought the tech and released this version in ’77. This was the best earning game up until Space Invaders came along:

4: Orbit by (Atari; 1978) – Orbit was Atari’s answer to Cinematronics Space Wars but instead of using a vector monitor, they opted for a raster (standard) monitor.  This took the Star Trek influence up a notch however as you could play as either the starship Enterprise or a Klingon Battle Cruiser (all unlicensed, of course).  This game also included many game variations like Space Wars did and it also was among the first Atari games to use professional, comic book style side art but the game did not do as well as the aforementioned title. Atari would later make up for this with their color vector game, Space Duel .

Official Star Trek Games

5: Star Trek Pinball(Bally; 1978) – More often than not, Star Trek has appeared in the pinball arena than it has on the video game side.

The first officially licensed Star Trek arcade product was this pinball game was created by Bally. While it features artwork that ties it to Star Trek: The Motion Picture (as you can tell by the uniforms and the design of the Enterprise on the backglass), originally the art fit with the TV show since it came out almost two years before the movie did. That said, it was not a TMP game, involving other art assets from the Original series.

This was a solid state game that could handle up to four players but as it was made prior to the use of speech in pinball machines, it would seem bland to many players these days. As a side note, pinball maker Gottlieb did release a Star Trek pinball in 1971 but the game had nothing to do with the TV show; Bally also had developed a pinball game in 1976 called Star Ship which had the Enterprise drawn on it’s backglass and side although there is only one Star Ship pin known to have been made, according to the Internet Pinball Machine Database.

6: Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator (Sega; 1982) – The first official Star Trek video game also happens to be one of the best if you ask me, this coin-op game by Sega. Based upon the Kobayashi Maru scenario from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , you command the Enterprise through various levels taking on Klingon ships who are attacking the starbase in each sector.

star trek voyager pinball machine

The screen is split into three sections, one for stats, one for a top down view of the area and the other the main view screen. The player can fire either phasers or photon torpedos (which have quite a large blast radius) or jump into warp speed quite easily to complete each scenario.  You also will face Nomad and other obstacles as you progress throughout the game. Thanks to it’s color vector monitor, the game still looks amazing today. The only problem was that this vector monitor type was prone to overheating/breaking down so it didn’t fare too well with arcade operators who saw it as a big risk/headache on repairs.

The cabinet was released in two versions, a standard upright version and a far cooler sit-down version which included a Captain’s chair, with the game controls built into the arm rests. This game also featured great synthesized speech, all put together to make you feel like you were in a Federation simulator. Sega ported this game to several home game consoles including the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, ColecoVision and the TI 99/4A (the TI having the best port out of all the versions). No home version could match those sweet vector graphics though:

7: Star Trek 25th Anniversary Pinball (Data East; 1991) – After a long hiatus, Star Trek returned to pinball to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show. This offered a more modern and exciting design than the previous effort in 1979.

stpin91

Part of the fun in this game is finding all of these things on the playfield and to top it off the game is a lot fun (which is the most important part, right?). The most striking effect found in the game is actually in the backbox where a cool transporter effect is placed prominently in the center of the glass that causes the characters to appear and disappear. If you get a chance to play this game, it is most impressive to witness in a dark environment. This is among the first games that featured an orange dot-matrix display, although it is smaller than other dot-matrix displays that would be used later. Here’s some video of the game in action:

8: Star Trek: The Next Generation Pinball (Williams; 1993) – As you can tell by now, most of the arcade Trek entries have been focused on “TOS,” or The Original Series. As popular as Star Trek : The Next Generation was, it is a little strange that the only place it can ever be found in an arcade is in the form of a pinball machine. That said, this game consistently wins over pinball fans in terms of playability, gracing the top 10 ratings list for quite a long time. It was designed by pinball legend Steve Ritchie.

First off the game is a wide-body, so the playfield is larger than your standard pin, Using that extra space, they managed to cram quite a bit into the game. There are model toys of a Romulan D’deridex-class Warbird, a Klingon Bird of Prey, a standard Federation shuttlecraft and most prominently, the Borg ship seen in the Season 6/7 episodes “ Descent “(I have seen an upcoming mod that replaces with with the better known Borg cube).

The game also includes some cool ball launchers which can take a captured pinball and with the right timing you can aim it to hit certain targets.  Thanks to the dot-matrix display and the software featured on the unit, it is quite fun to play and features plenty of depth to keep players coming back again and again. This old school promo video made by Williams below explains it best:

9: Star Trek: Voyager (Game Refuge & Team Play; 2002) – The last coin-op video Star Trek game to grace the presence of video arcades would be Star Trek: Voyager , a light-gun shooter where you must take on the Borg who have assaulted Voyager once again. As a light-gun game it was fairly simple but as a Trekkie I found myself being slightly irritated by the fact that they decided to use fairly standard gun cases instead of creating some molds that looked like phasers from the show. Pedantic and nerdy, I know.

To be fair to it, I need to give it more of a fair shake since I only played it once or twice. It did win Wal-Mart’s Arcade Game of the Year for 2002, so that says something; But I can’t find any other years where they gave out such an award. This was never ported to a console but you can still find out there in the arcade wilds.

Like the other Star Trek video effort by Sega, this was created in both standard and deluxe (sit-down) configurations. The deluxe style cabinet is certainly impressive due to it’s large screen and footprint where players can sit-down inside to enjoy blasting the Borg but when it comes to graphics, the game has not aged very well (like many older 3D games).

10: Star Trek (Stern Pinball; 2013) – Neither Deep Space Nine nor Enterprise got any love from the arcade/pinball side of things but with the reboot by JJ Abrams, Steve Ritchie wanted to get in on that action once again.

Stern-StarTrek-Premium-FrontRight

Pulling elements from Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness (2012), the player selects their ‘mission’ before launching the ball then you proceed to unlock events within those missions to clear it out. You can also win Bronze, Silver and Gold medals for your performance here. This eventually featured voiceovers by Dr. McCoy actor Karl Urban, a welcome update that really gave the game some more depth as well as character. “Dammit Jim I’m a doctor, not a pinball wizard”.

Overall I really enjoy the audio package to this one as it does not rely solely on sounds from the reboots, using many cues from the original series.

This was released in 3 flavors – Pro, Premium and Limited Edition. The latter two were the first that Stern had released to use multi-color LEDs and a redesigned backbox. Speaking from personal taste, when I played the Premium at a trade show(pictured above), it sold me on my first pinball table that I had bought in years.

11: Star Trek Arcade (Elaut USA; 2016) – I suppose this is sort of a stretch, kind of like Star Trek themed slot machines but at the moment you can come across this prize pusher game at Dave & Busters to win collectible cards. The announcement for this one was here and as far as I’m aware, this has remained a D&B exclusive.

star-trek-300x397

Drydock (Cancelled Trek Titles)

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (Bally Midway; 1984/5) – At the time where Bally Midway was experimenting with laserdisc tech (well, they foolishly went with the CED, which used a needle on the physical disc, which is why their attempts at LD failed), they were working on an FMV game based upon the 1984 film release, Star Trek III. No footage of this game has ever been found but it has been confirmed by people who worked at Bally Midway at the time that it did in fact exist.

Just note that System16 says “1980” for the date but that would have been impossible since the movie didn’t come out until ’84. My guess is that had the game launched, it would have been an ’85 release, just as The Spectre Files: Deathstalker was intended to be.

Star Trek Battleground (Raw Thrills; 2019/20) – One very recent attempt at bringing Trek to arcades came from Raw Thrills in the form of a unique videmption game called Star Trek Battleground . This featured projection mapping and an uneven surface, where things like planets were mapped to the half-spheres on the playfield. Players controlled a the saucer section of the Enterprise and a spinner to fire both phasers and photo torpedos at a variety of enemy ships (Klingons, Romulans, the Borg, etc.). We did a special post about this one which you can read here ; I also turned that into a video, although unfortunately I never received any footage of this in motion:

Star Trek: Section 31 (Xion Games; 2020) – Another Trek game that appears to have been the victim of the pandemic and was pitched to Raw Thrills at the same time they were working on Star Trek Battleground is this one, tentatively titled Star Trek: Section 31 . Rumor has had it for many years that some execs at Paramount wanted to do a Section 31 show but so far that only came to half-hearted fruition via frequent mentions in recent shows like Discovery. If you haven’t heard of it, they’re supposed to be a shady shadow government/spy agency that works to preserve the Federation using various under-handed means.

Everything for this pitch below was done in Unity and it would have used mounted guns to control the action. It’s too bad this was passed on as I think it had potential – and a Trek game in a modern environmental cabinet would be pretty sweet. You can see more of Xion’s pitch models here .

What is next for Trek in arcades?

Star Trek has never been as prominent in arcades as a franchise like Star Wars has been. In part that is because Star Wars more easily translates to arcade action thanks to its WWII -style space dogfights while Star Trek generally has slower moving and bulky space ships duking it out (and not in every episode either).

I still believe that the possibilities of what could be done are many; In the original article, I stated that: “Stern could easily create a new pinball machine based upon the new movie but such a game would have had to be in the works for a while already to be released in time for May .” I was referring to the 2009 reboot but my suggestion must have been heard in the ether for a release in 2013.

A reboot of the original Sega classic would still work although audiences have shown less of an appetite for games like that than they have other genres. A new light-gun shooter could work out better than Voyager did, and it could be based in any one of the ST series. The Dominion Wars from DS9 or the MACOs from ENT would probably work best although I am sure Paramount/CBS would probably want a new video game to be based on the less popular shows that they’ve been pushing over the past few years.

If Namco wanted to offer an update for the Star Wars Battle Pod or re-use the cabinet, piloting a Defiant-class starship into battle would probably work out for that style of game. As for racing….no. Space racing games just never feel right and that’s one place where Star Trek doesn’t need to waste a license.

Until next time, Live Long and Prosper!

I had two of those 1979 Bally Star Trek machines in my arcade, side by side, as well as TNG pin. All three got a lot of play, as people would play TNG (when that !@#!^$%# thing was working, dammit! Was there EVER a day when something wasn’t wrong with that damn thing?) and then play the other one out of curiosity.

' src=

Very interested article, thx 🙂

' src=

Great article! I’m big fan of star treck 🙂

' src=

ST pinball was the best! thx.

' src=

We had a much cooler raster based Star Trek sit down arcade game at Silverball Gardens in Berkeley in the late 70’s.

' src=

That was probably Atari’s Starship 1, although I never have seen that in a sit-down model. Could have been a conversion by the operator! The first time it was officiall given the sit-down treatment was with the Sega one (1982)

' src=

Looking at Starship 1, I think the starships in question are from the Franz Joseph Star Fleet Technical Manual, written in 1975. I think they are Ptolemy class tugs with cargo containers attached.

With a large, lively gathering of Star Trek redshirts posing for a group photo, WonderCon kicked off at the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday, March 29. Now in its 36th year, the comics convention runs through Easter Sunday and brings together costumed fans, artists, authors and celebrity guests sharing their love and enthusiasm for pop culture.

The redshirts – who are renowned for often dying in “Star Trek” episodes – were among the throngs of Spider-Men, Batmen, pirates from the anime “One Piece” and Disney princesses who posed in front of the “Ocean Fountain” just outside the entrance to the convention center.

While waiting for more Spider-Men to show up for a prearranged group photo, Alec Zarate from Whittier, dressed as Spidey’s Venom symbiote, struck the superhero’s classic crouch position on the top of a garbage can by the fountain. A mask of the alien symbiote’s face sprang from the neck of Zarate’s black outfit on a wire, as a nod to Venom’s bond with Peter Parker.

“Venom’s really rowdy, but he’s friendly,” Zarate joked.

Zarate said he hopes to see a Saturday panel with Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, co-creators of the animated series “Smiling Friends” from Adult Swim. This year, WonderCon’s panels will spotlight comic books writers and artists like Gail Simone and Dustin Nguyen , as well as the cast and crew of TV shows and movies such as “The Spiderwick Chronicles” with Christian Slater and “Boy Kills World,” with Famke Janssen.

Low-key con

Run by the same organizers as San Diego Comic-Con , the largest comics and pop culture convention in the world, WonderCon is known for being a friendly, more chill experience for attendees. There’s no nerves-shredding lottery system for badges, nor are the lines for panels and merchandise anywhere near as exhaustingly long as those at SDCC. At the time this article was written, badges were still available for sale on-site.

Inside the convention center on the exhibition floor, Barbara Robles and her family were playing pinball on a “Jaws”-themed pinball machine. Robles, her husband and stepdaughter were respectively dressed as Dark Phoenix, “Beast” and “Rogue” from “X-Men.” Her son Ezra, 9, was dressed as Sebastian from the children’s book, “The Impossible Quest.”

“He wanted to do his own thing this year,” Robles said with a laugh. “We all like to dress up, and usually we vote on the group costume we want to do. Last year, we dressed as Scooby-Doo characters, and we even had the Mystery Machine van.”

Regular WonderCon-goers, Robles said they traveled down from Lompoc to attend WonderCon, although they will head back home for Easter. “Even though we’re not here long, it’s a great family event for us.”

Droids from Star Wars roamed the exhibition hall, stopping every few feet for photos and videos with fans. Five-year-old Alison Yao from Pasadena struck a pose with R2D2.

“I’m a huge Star Wars fan,” said her father, Tony Yao. “So she recognizes R2 now.”

Yao hopes WonderCon sees good crowds this year, even with the rainy forecast for Saturday and Sunday. “I’m worried that the weather will put a damper on it a little bit. But it’s a fun weekend, so I hope folks still come out.”

A toy designer, Yao was attending WonderCon as both a fan and a creator of action figures. He works with some of the companies presenting merchandise on the floor, including Toynami.

Rather than the industry giants at SDCC, WonderCon’s floor tends to run to independent artists and small press. A couple of the bigger names this year are IDW comics, which will host a few of its artists for signings, and FiGPiN, which will have exclusive Star Wars Rebels , My Hero Academia and Scooby-Doo collectibles only available to con-goers.

Fans who needed masks for their cosplay could visit the “Mad Masks” booth run by Rachel and David Quintana of Mission Viejo. Rachel Quintana said they began making masks from their home 12 years ago.

“My husband was dressed as the Joker and I was doing Harley Quinn, but the mask that came with my costume didn’t fit properly,” she said. “So I made my own, and a couple extra, and sold them on eBay, and they were just snapped up.”

The couple have been selling their handmade leather masks at WonderCon for the last four years, and will also have a presence at San Diego Comic Con this July.

“I love WonderCon and Comic Con because I love seeing my customers in person, and just the buzz of the whole atmosphere,” Quintana said. “I look forward to it every year.”
