My Favourite Escapes

Every weekend is an adventure

Tanzania itinerary: safari, mt kilimanjaro and zanzibar in 3 weeks.

  • Post published: 27 July 2015
  • Post category: Africa / Tanzania

My visit to Tanzania was also my first time exploring a sub-Saharan African country. I had an amazing journey and loved every minute of it. Here’s a travel guide with a 3-week Tanzania itinerary across the country, from the savannah to the top of Kilimanjaro and the beautiful beaches in Zanzibar.

Lion cub on a safari in Tanzania

3-week Tanzania Itinerary

Part 1 of our tanzania itinerary: from dar es salaam to arusha.

Our international flight landed in Dar Es Salaam. Our safari was leaving two days later from Arusha. We could have taken a flight to cross the country, but we opted for a different experience that we found more interesting: we went there by bus. Read our experience here .

Bus between Dar Es Salaam and Arusha

Part 2 of our Tanzania Itinerary: a 6-day safari

We left Arusha and explored the wonderful and iconic parks of Tanzania. We were travelling with a guide/driver and a cook and camping every night. It was fantastic: I never imagined we would ever be able to see wildlife from that close.

We went to Tarangire , Lake Manyara , Oldupai Gorge , Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. And we saw all the animals you can expect in an African safari. It’s hard to tell which one was the best, but I’ve written here about the highlights of my safari trip .

We also had two stops to visit local villages: one stop at a traditional (and disappointing) Masaii village and another stop to learn more about the modern Tanzanian history and culture at Mto Wa Mbu village. You can read all about it here.

Part 3 of our Tanzania Itinerary: Our 5-day climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro

Going on a safari was quite high on my bucket list. But for me, climbing Africa’s highest summit was even more exciting. When we flew to Dar Es Salaam, we saw the top of Kilimanjaro from the plane. At almost 5,000 metres high, it was at the same level as us in the plane. Since realising that, I was quite nervous about it – especially as I felt my body weak as I was a bit sick.

As expected, reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro was a challenge. One of the hardest hikes I’ll ever do in my life. It doesn’t mean you cannot do it: it’s not technically difficult. But the altitude – and worse, the altitude sickness – makes every step harder than it should be.

If you’re interested to read more about Kilimanjaro, I suggest reading these two articles:

  • How to prepare Mount Kilimanjaro: my five big tips for the climb
  • The life lessons I learnt while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

There are risks associated with climbing Kilimanjaro. Most travel insurance won’t cover you for such an experience. Make sure you double-check if you are covered at an altitude of 5,895m!  WorldNomads * may have the solution for you.

Part 4 of our Tanzania Itinerary: A few days relaxing on Zanzibar Island

I have to admit I didn’t do as much as I wished in Zanzibar. After going down Kilimanjaro, my joints were tired and painful, so I used Zanzibar as an opportunity to rest on a beautiful beach while talking to locals and eating delicious barbecues on the beach. It’s one of the best places to relax,   check out the best beaches in Zanzibar here to get an idea of the beauty of the island.

I still got to do activities that didn’t require too much effort: two scuba dives and a great trip on a traditional sailing boat – which was amazing. Although they sounded interesting, I had to skip the iconic capital Stone Town and the spice tour.

Before you go to Tanzania

Talk to your doctor about your trip, so you get the necessary vaccines and learn more about Malaria prevention .

If you plan to hike Kilimanjaro,  read here my tips to prepare for the climb . It’s also a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional about it if you have any questions about altitude sickness .

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, moshi – final preparations for kilimanjaro hike.

Karibu! Welcome to Tanzania! Today you will fly into the city of Moshi in central Tanzania, which thrives in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a long international flight, today will be spent relaxing and adjusting to the time difference. A portion of the afternoon will be spent reviewing final preparations in anticipation of the hike tomorrow. Spend time around the lodge in Moshi, enjoying a final restaurant-style meal and a glass of wine in the evening, before retiring early to bed. Tomorrow will be the first of a series of physically challenging and stimulating days!

What's Included:

Mandara Camp – Begin to Ascend the Rainforested Slopes of Kilimanjaro

Today, the first Tanzanian adventure begins in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Arriving at the Marangu Gate in the early morning, we will complete a few final pieces of paperwork before setting off into the lush rainforested slopes. Today’s climb will gently weave and wander alongside rivers and waterfalls as we cover eight kilometers over three to four hours on well-trodden paths. You will stop frequently to admire this stunning jungle, often said to be the most beautiful of all the forest routes on Kilimanjaro. Pick the perfect place for your first African picnic, and keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and prolific birdlife.

As the forest thins and lichen becomes more prevalent, you will know you are reaching the end of the day. Tonight we will camp at the ever-popular Mandara Huts (1,860 meters), where you will have the option of camping or staying in a small cabin. For those who arrive with energy to spare, there is a pleasant detour from the campsite to the Maundi Crater, which will give you your first look at the Mawenzi peak – one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.  Tonight you will enjoy a fire-cooked dinner prepared by our expert chefs, while porters organize logistics for the coming days.

Horombo Huts – Hike Through Heather and Moorland

This morning, porters will pack up camp as you begin today’s hike through the second climactic zone: the alpine moorland. Shockingly different from the jungle below, this landscape is fringed with lichen, heather, lobelias, and giant senecios. Vast open spaces, with plants that grow over three meters high, makes for a prehistoric-looking landscape that is fascinating to both hike through and learn about. As you climb along the rocky trail, you will catch your first glimpse of Kili’s second volcanic peak, Kibo. The view of this second summit only builds further excitement for the moment when you will finally lay eyes on Uhuru, the third peak, and your ultimate goal.

In the late afternoon, you will reach the Horombo Huts (3,720 meters) – tonight’s destination. If you reach the huts on a clear afternoon, you may be lucky enough to see right down to the town of Moshi below. Tonight you will again have the choice of a tent or hut on this mountain campsite. Gather round the fire tonight with fellow hikers to exchange stories. Horombo is a destination for both those ascending and descending, giving you a taste of the wonder that lies ahead.

Kibo Huts – Hike Into the Alpine Desert as you Near the Peak

Today’s hike carries you out of the moorland and into the alpine desert, located on the saddle between Kibo and Mwenzi peaks. Temperatures drop and winds intensify at this high altitude – a sure sign that the summit is near. Today’s hike often takes between five and seven hours, covering a total of nine and a half kilometers. Water is increasingly sporadic at this high altitude, and in the late afternoon, you will pass an exciting landmark: the final water source before the summit! From here, hikers traverse the dramatic and blustery saddle between the peaks, ultimately finding refuge at the Kibo Huts. From here, you will catch your first perfect view of Uhuru, which you will summit in only a few short hours. Tonight you will head to bed as early as possible since the journey to the peak begins roughly around midnight.

Horombo Huts – Summit Uhuru Peak, Soaking in the Best Sunrise on the Continent

Just after midnight, your guides will lure you out of your tent with hot tea and biscuits. You and your team will join the procession of flashlights beginning the ascent towards the summit, in anticipation of catching the best sunrise on the continent. Excitement courses through the hikers as you follow a rocky path towards Hans Meyer Cave and Gillman’s Point. Snow begins to appear on the ground around you as you approach the glacial summit, and the first glimpses of daylight begin to appear. Pause atop Uhuru Peak as the sun reveals the landscape below, before beginning your descent to the base of the mountain.

Running off the elation of having summited the highest peak in Africa, you will descend quickly back to the Kibo Huts. Here, a warm breakfast awaits you that will fuel you back down to Horombo. Indulge in a soft drink or beer on arrival, and begin to exchange stories with fellow hikers at the camp before falling asleep early.

Moshi – Descend to the Base for Rest and Relaxation

Remarkably, by your sixth day in Tanzania, this first epic adventure will have ended. This morning you will wake up to descend back through the moorland and jungle, retracing steps from the days earlier. This final 20-kilometer stretch takes a mere five to six hours to cover, eventually leading you back to the main gate. Here, you will be presented with a certificate for having summited the mountain. You will then return to Moshi in a private vehicle, where an afternoon of warm baths, delicious meals, and celebratory drinks await you.

Arusha – Drive from Moshi to Arusha

Given the challenges and adrenaline of the previous days, today will be a relaxing and easy trip from Moshi to the neighboring city of Arusha. You will drive out from the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, and towards Tanzania’s third-highest peak, Mount Meru. You will stay just outside the town of Arusha for the night, where you will have the option to indulge in a much-deserved massage or spa treatment. Enjoy a day of leisure on the lodge grounds since tomorrow, the second portion of the adventure kicks off!

Lake Manyara – Search for Tree-Climbing Lions

Having explored Tanzania’s mountainous region, today you will begin explorations through the African bush. This portion starts in the tranquil and serene Lake Manyara National Park.  You will drive to the park from Arusha over the course of the morning, arriving in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive.

The park itself revolves around a sparkling alkaline lake, which is frequently coated by pink flamingos. These soda lakes are characteristic of the Great Rift Valley and attract phenomenal populations of both resident and migratory birds. Ornithologists will want to do little more than set up under an acacia tree with a pair of binoculars, gazing at the skies above. The woodlands that surround the lake are also fascinating, largely because they house a population of rare tree-climbing lions. Found in only a handful of parks in Africa, these nimble lions are often seen swinging their tails from the branches of a tree. Drive along the escarpments and valleys, tracing the Tarangire River that feeds into this lake. These stunning vistas will stand in contrast to those seen as you ascended Kilimanjaro, revealing another facet of Tanzania.

Serengeti – Olduvai Gorge the ‘Cradle of Mankind’

This morning, excitement will build as you depart Lake Manyara and begin your journey towards the Serengeti. This region is significant for much more than solely its wildlife, which will become apparent over the coming days. We will first detour through the town of Mto Wa Mbu, where a number of Tanzanian tribes assimilate. Dominated by Masai warriors, this community has organized a cultural tourism program that shares the rich and varied local cultures with visitors. Take a tour through an authentic Masai homestead, or stop to peruse the crafts and beadwork made by local women. Be sure to sample a few different varieties of bananas, as these are the main export of the region. Intrepid eaters may even wish to sample a local stew, if curious about the flavors of local cuisine.

Carrying on, you will also detour past the Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites. It was here that Mary and Louis Leaky discovered some of the oldest known hominid remains in the 1960s. These Zinjanthropus bosei remains date back over 1.75 million years, while fossilized footprints date back over three million years. Few areas provide greater insight into human evolution than this particular gorge. Swing past the visitor’s center for additional information, before continue on westwards towards the Serengeti. You will emerge onto the golden plains in the late afternoon, with just enough time for an evening cocktail and bush dinner, before you sleepily collapse into bed.

Serengeti – In Search of Intimate Wildlife Encounters

For many, today will be filled with the archetypal African imagery: a safari across the sprawling savanna of the Serengeti. Rise early and hop in your vehicle with a packed picnic breakfast to explore the wilderness while it is at its most active. Venture out across the plains with an expert local guide, who will spend the day helping you locate the coveted cast of the Big Five. Watch as elephants tear leaves off acacia trees, while giraffes look onward from above the treetops. Seek out a lion lazing quietly in the shade, while rambunctious cubs circle the pride. You will undoubtedly find yourself perpetually surrounded by herds of ungulates, including countless zebra, gazelle, and buffalo. If timed correctly, you may even be lucky enough to drive through the epicenter of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Spend time along rivers and beside watering holes, observing the species that come by for a drink. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and hippos, which are often found lazily bobbing and lounging along the shore.

Spend the entire day exploring as much of the park as possible, or, return midday for some indulgence and relaxation at the lodge property. No matter how you choose to structure your day, be sure to seek out the perfect sundowner location where you can enjoy a local cocktail as the sunset fills the sky with color around you. Drift asleep tonight to the sound of the wild, keeping an ear open for the cackle of a hyena or the grunt of a buffalo, as that will be a perfect conclusion to this magical day.

Ngorongoro Crater – Explore the Plateaus of the Collapsed Volcano

Rise before the sun in order to squeeze in a final safari before you depart the Serengeti. Spend a few final hours traversing the plains in search of your favorite species, and those yet to be seen. For those craving a new perspective on the terrain, this may be the perfect opportunity to embark on a romantic and luxurious hot air balloon ride over the savanna, complete with a champagne picnic breakfast as you descend. Floating high above the plains is one of the few ways to truly grasp the expansiveness of the area – and to experience the total tranquility of it all.

In the mid-morning, you will return to the vehicle to drive back through the Ngorongoro Crater. You will stop at a lodge perched on the edge of the crater, with phenomenal views of the crater floor below.  Ngorongoro was formed an estimated two to three million years ago, when an ancient volcano collapsed in on itself, creating this expansive caldera. Today, it is the largest inactive caldera worldwide and is home to vibrant populations of wildlife. The crater floor is often stippled with ungulates grazing on the lush grasses, while one of the world’s densest populations of lions looks onward. Sitting on the edge of the escarpment at sunset with a sundowner in hand will make for yet another epic conclusion to a day. Before the sun disappears entirely and the sky is engulfed with stars, peer down to the crater floor, in anticipation of tomorrow’s adventure.

Arusha – Explore the Floor of the Ngorongoro Crater

This morning you will rise early in order to explore the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Weave down the rainforest lined slopes of the caldera, peering through the tangled trees for signs of leopards. The lush vegetation of the crater will contrast the days prior, drawing back memories of your early days on Kilimanjaro. As you approach the crater floor, the landscape shifts to vast grassland with a large lake in the center. Unsurprisingly, these fertile fields seasonally attract large herds of zebra, wildebeest, and impala as part of the Great Migration. As the day wears on, begin your journey back up the opposing slopes to the surrounding highlands. Here, you will have impressive views of this volcanic landscape, with Mount Lengai looming off in the distance. Soak in a few final moments looking out across this stunning caldera over a picnic lunch in the bush, before returning to Arusha by road.

Stone Town – Fly to the Island of Zanzibar

This morning you will board a flight in Arusha that will fly you across Tanzania, out over the ocean, descending on the tropical shores of Zanzibar. Arriving at the airport in the historic Stone Town, the remainder of the day will be spent exploring the cobbled streets and winding roads of this unique city. In Zanzibar, you will begin the third radically different portion of the trip. The following days will revolve largely around culture, cuisine, and deep relaxation in this tropical paradise. With few structured activities, the days will be largely yours to design, ensuring the perfect finish to this unbelievable vacation.

Stone Town – Exploring Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Today will be spent entirely at your leisure. Stone Town has played a significant role in east African development, acting as a meeting ground for Arab, Persian Indian, European and African merchants, and traders. Swahili culture emerged as a result of this vibrant fusion and remains a protected pride of the island today. Architecture, culture, and cuisine are markedly different from that of the mainland, and today will be your chance to explore it. Whether you opt to explore the historical monuments of this Swahili town, dive into the spices and flavors that characterize the island, or simply wander the cobbled streets poking in stores and alleyways, today will be yours to design.

That said, some of the highlights of Stone Town include a visit to the Palace of Wonders, an opulent former Sultan’s residence since converted into a museum for Swahili and Zanzibari culture. Having played a significant role in the slave trade, a tour through the city’s Old Slave Market is another worthwhile endeavor. Navigating the tiny underground chambers provides a chilling and unforgettable insight into the horrors of the island’s dark history. Restaurants are rich and varied throughout the town, with endless opportunities to taste local flavor. Take the day to lose yourself in the history and culture of this singular city, ensuring of course that you migrate to an oceanside bar for the sunset.

Kendwa – From Spice Plantation to Northern Beach

While Stone Town is truly special, the beaches outside the city brought the island international fame. Today you will head northwest towards Kendwa, detouring through a spice plantation en route. The spice trade has been fundamental to the island’s development and remains an important feature of life today. Set out on a guided tour that exposes your senses to fields of cloves, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon, and lemongrass. Pause in fields of breadfruit and jackfruit to sample the island’s fresh tropical fruit, before carrying on north towards the island’s beach capital. You will arrive on the idyllic shores of Kendwa in the late afternoon, leaving just enough time to sample impossibly fresh seafood as a starry night sky explodes above. Listen to the sound of the ocean washing up in front of a beachfront restaurant, as a soothing evening breeze blows past.

Kendwa – Relaxing on the Aquamarine Shores

Today, this unbelievable adventure draws to a close on the tropical shores of Kendwa. Having explored all the major destinations in Tanzania, today will be the perfect opportunity to unwind and reflect upon your journey. There is no better place to do this than from the shade of a palm tree on a soft white sand beach. As turquoise and teal waters lap up around your feet, enjoy a final day with a great book and a cocktail in hand. Of course, if you happen to be an underwater enthusiast, forget the day of reflection and hop on a local dhow for a snorkeling, diving, or sailing trip! You still have one more day to squeeze in a few final activities, and a sailing trip through the smooth Indian Ocean on route to sublime diving and snorkeling spots is an absolute must.

Return to the island as the sun sets, and sip on a final mojito while you order an impossibly fresh seafood feast. Fall asleep to the sound of waves splashing up on the shore, as a warm tropical breeze blows through your room. From this tropical paradise, memories of the chilly morning atop Kilimanjaro will feel somewhat unbelievable.

Stone Town – Depart to Home

This morning you will drive back to Stone Town in order to catch a flight off the island. Flying either to Dar es Salaam or back to Arusha, you will arrive at the connecting airport in time to catch your international flight. On the heels of nearly three action-packed weeks, we can safely assume that you will be ready to enjoy your pictures and share your stories with friends and family. However, if you are keen to extend the adventure just a little bit longer, we will gladly recommend a few other destinations to round out your trip to Africa. Take a look at reviews of Tanzania luxury vacations for some ideas and traveler experiences.

Detailed Description

Fly out of the bush, landing on the idyllic tropical shores of the Zanzibar Archipelago. Truly one of the best trips I’ve ever had. It was my first time ever doing a solo trip. Himanshu gave us an itinerary and a list of good traveling tips for Egypt months in advance. He is very organized and responsive so I never had any concerns. Everything was already taken care of. All I had to do was show up. The scenes in Egypt were breathtaking and I saw places that I never thought I’d see.

Had a great time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Land in Salt Lake City & the rest of the trip is taken care by BLGT.. you have absolutely nothing to worry about.. logistics, campsite booking, tickets, planning is all done by them. We had a great guide with us through out the trip. Would definitely be going with BLGT in future.

The trip was to the Galapagos and it was wonderful Quito was also a beautiful City.

This was a trip of a lifetime, been wanting to do this for a long time. All planning done right and price was great can’t wait for my next trip, unfortunately I can only do one a year

Had a great experience through BLGT recently in Alaska; appreciated the trip leaders’ ability to handle logistics so you could focus on the experience and having fun. It was just like traveling with a group of friends, with the added bonus of the itinerary being all taken care of.

THE TOUR IN SHORT

If you love challenges and adventure, this trip is simply made for you!

Surrounded by the Tanzanian savannah, the tallest peak in Africa rises to a height of 5,895 metres above sea level. Our destination is Uhuru Peak. You don’t have to be an experienced climber to scale this majestic mountain, you simply need to be reasonably fit and have the proper equipment. And a determined mindset. Being able to say that you have climbed the highest mountain in Africa is often sufficient motivation in and of itself.

The ascent will take you through various forms of vegetation, everything from lush rainforest and heathland to rocky landscapes and alpine desert. From the Shira plateau, there is a breath-taking view all the way to the glaciers at Western Breach, while Stella Point is the perfect location to view a blood-red sunrise. It is a tough, demanding hike, but when you reach Uhuru Peak, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view from an altitude of almost 6 km – combined with an experience to cherish for a lifetime.

You can then look forward to exciting safaris in Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, where you can experience the extraordinary and iconic wildlife of Africa right up close.

Having climbed the highest mountain in Africa and been on safari, it is time to treat yourself to a well-earned beach holiday on Zanzibar, where you can spend the days relaxing on the brilliant white sand.

Departure day, where you will fly to Kilimanjaro with connecting flights along the way.

On arrival at Kilimanjaro’s international airport, you will be met by your guide who will accompany you to Springlands Hotel in the small town of Moshi – a drive of approx. 1 hour. From Moshi, you will catch your first glimpse of the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro. The town is a prime example of African culture and atmosphere, packed with exotic experiences including the local market and numerous small shops.

There is a welcome meeting in the afternoon, where your guide will present the equipment you will be using and talk about the coming trek to the summit.

Heights: Moshi: 915 AMSL.

  • Springlands Hotel

After breakfast, you will leave Moshi and take the 50-minute trip by car to the village of Machame, where you will meet your team of guides, cooks and bearers, who will prepare and pack your equipment. From here, you move on to Machame Gate, which is the south-western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. At the entrance, you need to check in and register before making a start on your hike through the rainforest towards the peak of Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro actually consists of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo, whose highest point is Uhuru (5,895 masl), Mawenzi (5,149 masl) and Shira (3,962 masl).

The first section of the trail is at low altitude, and the ground may be wet and muddy. You will follow beautiful paths through the dense rainforest, where you may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, which includes the wonderfully attractive and extremely rare black and white Colobus monkeys. The bearers will go on ahead, so your tent will be ready for you when you arrive at Machame Camp.

Heights: Moshi: 915 AMSL., Machame Gate: 1,634 AMSL., Machame Camp: 2,834 AMSL.

Ascent from Moshi to camp: 1,919 m ⭡

Distance: 11 km

Hike duration: 6-7 hours

  • Tent camp on Kilimanjaro

Today takes you through the last section of the rainforest; the heath landscape soon opens up before you and the paths become rockier. Your route takes you over the Shira Plateau, from where you can see Kilimanjaro’s Western Breach – the westernmost crater edge with its amazing glacier. You are now to the west of the extinct volcano Kibo, on the opposite side of the Marangu route, and following a short hike to the west you will arrive at Shira 2 Camp.

Heights: Machame Camp: 2.834 AMSL., Shira 2 Camp: 3,840 AMSL.

Ascent from camp to camp: 1,006 m ⭡

Distance: 5 km

Hike duration: 4-5 hours

Today you will be heading east. The landscape starts to dry out, becoming more barren and stonier the higher you climb. As you continue your ascent, you can enjoy magnificent views of both Kibo and Mt. Meru, poking up above the white clouds behind you. Having followed the trail up the mountain for a couple of hours, you will reach the famous Lava Tower, which stems from Kilimanjaro’s previous incarnation as an active volcano.

After lunch at the foot of the Lava Tower, it is time to descend to Barranco Camp, which is located in a valley below the Great Barranco Wall. If the weather gods are kind, you can look forward to watching a truly stunning sunset from Barranco Camp, and to enjoying a magnificent view of the top of Kilimanjaro, a wonderful look down the side of the mountain to the valley, and – farther to the east – the Great Barranco Wall which rises up fully 300 metres.

Both the terrain and the altitude will make today’s stage physically and mentally challenging, so take your time and listen to your body. Even though you will finish the day ‘just’ 110 metres higher up than you started, the route involves climbing 790 metres higher than that at Lava Tower before the descent to Barranco Camp. A lot of people experience the first signs of altitude sickness at these heights, so please watch out for the slightest sign and inform your guide without delay.

Heights: Shira 2 Camp: 3,840 AMSL., Lava Tower: 4,630 AMSL., Barranco Camp: 3,950 AMSL.

Ascent from camp to camp: 110 m ⭡

Distance: 15 km

Hike duration: 7 hours

After a night at the foot of the impressive Great Barranco Wall and a solid breakfast, the time has come to climb the notorious cliff. Fortunately, it is easier than it looks … From the top, beneath Heim Glacier that hangs like a set of ice curtains across the cliff face, the full beauty of Kilimanjaro spreads out in all its glory.

The path then continues down through Karanga Valley, merging with the Mweka route, which you will follow all the way to the peak. A hike of about an hour brings you to Barafu Camp, which is located at an exposed site on a mountain ridge. The ground is stony and the winds often blow strongly here. Make sure to familiarise yourself with the terrain in and around the camp before darkness falls to ensure you are well prepared when the ascent to the summit commences shortly after midnight.

Ready your equipment and warm clothes for the next day’s hike to the peak, and store your drinking water in a Thermos to prevent it freezing solid. Settle down for the night early to ensure your ‘human batteries’ are fully charged in preparation for Kilimanjaro’s ultimate challenge.

Heights: Barranco Camp: 3.950 AMSL., Barafu Camp: 4,600 AMSL.

Ascent from camp to camp: 650 m ⭡

Distance: 8 km

Hike duration: 6-8 hours

Around midnight, you will be woken up and served a snack before starting the final section of your ascent to the summit – in pitch darkness. Most people consider the difficult terrain you have to traverse on the 6-hour hike to Stella Point the biggest challenge of the entire trip. The aim is to reach Stella Point shortly after sunrise so that you can admire the sight of the blood-red sun rising gently above the horizon. You are not given long to rest, however, because otherwise it would be almost impossible to shake off the cold and fatigue and continue along the rim of the crater to Uhuru. The last stretch of the climb features an even incline. Depending on the season, you may encounter snow on the last part of the route to Uhuru Peak, which is your final goal: the top of Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. Once you reach the peak at an altitude of 5,895 masl, you can give yourself a pat on the back, enjoy the magnificent view and have your picture taken in front of the Uhuru Peak sign as a lasting souvenir of your achievement.

It is then time to start your descent to Barafu Camp, which takes approx. 3 hours. When you arrive there, you can enjoy a short, well-deserved rest before continuing along the rocky trail to Mweka Camp – and a much-needed night’s sleep! The camp is situated in the upper reaches of the rainforest, so the weather is often foggy and rainy late in the afternoon. The absolute highlights here are the promise of hot water and a hot meal!

Heights: Barafu Camp: 4,600 AMSL., Uhuru Peak: 5,895 AMSL., Mweka Camp: 3,100AMSL.

Ascent from camp to camp: 1,500 m ⭣

Distance: 5 km up and 12 km down

Hike duration: 6-7 hours up, 7 hours down

The final walking stage is an easy 3-hour stroll through the national park to Mweka Gate, where you check out before being picked up and driven back to the village of Moshi. A tasty lunch awaits you at the hotel, as well as something you have been looking forward to for days: a wonderfully hot bath. Everyone who has completed the climb is awarded a diploma.

Heights: Mweka Camp: 3,100 AMSL., Mweka Gate: 1,850 AMSL., Moshi: 915 AMSL.

Ascent from camp to Moshi: 2,185 m ⭣

Distance: 10 km

Hike duration: 3-4 hours

Today you will head to Tarangire National Park, which is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses through the park, which is the only source of water for the animals during dry seasons.

The park is famous for its huge number of elephants.  Here you can find one of the largest concentrations of elephants anywhere in the world. Tarangire is also home to cheetahs, leopards, lions, hyenas and a variety of other African wildlife.

he landscape and vegetation is incredibly diverse as the hilly landscape embraces nine different growth zones. The savannah is filled with majestic baobab trees and acacias, which are almost on scale with the vast amount of animals to be found.

  • Highview Hotel

After breakfast and check-out from the hotel, you head to Lake Manyara National Park. Extending over an area of 330 m2, this is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks, of which the lake itself covers a good two-thirds, depending on the season.

It was here on the southern shore of the lake that Ernest Hemingway’s camp was situated in the mid-1930s, while he went hunting for the largest and most beautiful kudu in the nearby area, known today as Tarangire National Park.

Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960 to preserve the region’s unique ecosystem, and in 1981, it became part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).

The area is part of the spectacular Great Rift Valley, which runs all the way through the African continent from the Middle East to Mozambique. Researchers believe that this rift system will at some point in the future cause the African continental plate to split into two separate continental plates and thus tear a large part of the African continent apart from the rest.

The national park, which is long and narrow, is bordered to the east by Lake Manyara itself, and to the west by the slopes of the Rift Valley, which are up to 600 metres high. In between are open grasslands, a jungle-like forest, mangroves, hot springs and swamps. The diversity is unrivalled, and it is impressive to see how drastically the landscape changes in a relatively small area. With the many different habitats comes a great variety of wildlife – although the animals can be difficult to spot amidst all the lushness.

The great biodiversity in the park also attracts many birds – more than 400 different bird species have been recorded here.

Lake Manyara itself is a soda lake, and the water level fluctuates a lot depending on whether it’s the rainy season or the dry season. Along the shore, you may be lucky enough to see large flocks of flamingos.

After this final nature experience, you’ll be driven to the airport where you’ll catch a plane to the exotic island of Zanzibar.

8 Most Charming Places in Tanzania

Found along the coast of East Africa is the great nation of Tanzania . Not the most well-known country in Africa, Tanzania has quietly become one of the upstart places in Africa, boasting a burgeoning and booming tourism industry. Known for its breathtaking landscape, white sand beaches, and vibrant culture, Tanzania is surely to make a good first impression.

Ruaha National Park

A lone giraffe standing in the grasslands at Ruaha National Park.

Ruaha National Park is the largest nature reserve in Tanzania. In 2008, it merged with the neighboring Usangu Game Reserve, now covering more than 20,000km². There are campsites located all over the park, which make for perfect vantage points from which to see the wildlife up close.

Going on a safari here is like no other. There are endless ways to explore the park, all with a warm and helpful guide to help along the way. Most of these safaris are done from the safety of a car, whereas others are conducted on boats. The animals that you will see and the people that you will meet are going to create memories that last a lifetime.

Mahale Mountains National Park

A chimpanzee in the Mahale Mountains.

Another one of Tanzania's stellar national parks, the Mahale Mountains, is located along the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Tanzania. Initially created to protect a large segment of Tanzania's chimpanzee population, the park has become a world-class tourist destination.

The Greystone Mahale Camp is particularly stunning. This one-of-a-kind lodge is the perfect place to go on a romantic getaway with your significant other. There are, of course, plenty of guided tours inland to observe and occasionally interact with the various groups of chimpanzees that call the park home.

Nyerere National Park

Aerial view of Nyerere national Park in Tanzania

Located on in Eastern Tanzania, the Nyerere National Park transports its guests into the thick of the African savannah . Guests can enjoy this park any way they want. There are traditional safaris, boat safaris, and even the option to survey the park from a hot air balloon.

Tours into the bush are also available. This allows guests to observe the wildlife up close and personal. It also gives visitors the chance to visit some of the remote villages that are located within the park. The locals here are famous for their warm demeanor and hospitality .

Mafia Island

Beach resort on Mafia island in Tanzania.

Despite its name having a somewhat foreboding name, Mafia Island couldn't be further removed from any semblance of violence or organized crime. Located along the east coast of Tanzania, Mafia Island's pristine beaches and crystal blue water are nothing short of magical.

Mafia Island's beaches are a hotspot for nesting turtles, and its shallow waters teem with marine life. For those daring enough, the best months to spot whale sharks are from October to February. Even if aquatic life is not to your taste, the laid-back and peaceful nature of the island is enough to make this a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Two elephants grazing beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sitting along its northern border with Kenya is Mount Kilimanjaro , the largest mountain in Africa. Sitting at roughly 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) tall, Kilimanjaro looms over the vast plains of the African savannah.

Climbing to the summit of the mountain is no easy feat, but reaching the top is certainly worth it. For those who have no interest in hiking up Kilimanjaro, there is a fantastic national park available. The park offers tons of tours led by accommodating and friendly guides.

Lake Manyara National Park

Two zebras wading into Lake Manyara.

Found in the north of Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is another great destination for those wanting to get a closer look at the spectacular African wildlife. There are numerous tours available that grant visitors the chance to observe herds of elephants , curious giraffes, and even lion pride.

Aside from the traditional methods of looking at wildlife, there is also a tree-top canopy walk in some places. This gives the park's guests a new and unique way of viewing different kinds of primates and exotic birds. It is a great place to take friends and family.

Ngorongoro Crater

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater National Park. Tanzania.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera . The surrounding area is teeming with wildlife and is the perfect place to go if you want to experience a more traditional safari. The land is home to all the stable animals one would expect, along with the semi-nomadic Maasai nomads who still live and hunt in the area.

There are dozens of high-end resorts guests have to choose from. If staying at a resort is not to your liking, then there are various campsites set up throughout the park that all come with a surprising amount of comfort despite being in the middle of the wilderness. The staff who work at these accommodations are more than happy to help and assist wherever they are needed.

A small fishing town within the Zanzibar Archipelago.

The Zanzibar Archipelago is located off the east coast of Tanzania. There is a lot to do in Zanzibar, and it has quietly become one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Tanzania. Whether you are looking for a relaxing time at the beach or want to explore the city itself, there is something here for everyone.

The Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve is a great place to visit, especially for wadding in the warm turquoise blue water and shallow sandbank that the island is famous for. The old quarter of Zanzibar is another great attraction. Filled with a rich history and Arabian-infused architecture and culture, the city of Zanzibar is one of the more unique places in Africa. Its charm and energy are apparent the moment you arrive.

Discover Tanzania’s Hidden Charms

Tanzania is one of the best-kept secrets of Africa. Home to an endless amount of attractions and entertainment, it is no wonder more people are deciding to come and visit every year. No matter if you want to explore the county's wildlife or take a relaxing vacation on the beach, Tanzania has all of its bases covered.

Why you should combine a wildlife safari and a Zanzibar Beach getaway

Combining a wildlife safari with a Zanzibar beach experience offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, providing travelers with a diverse and unforgettable vacation. Here are some reasons why this combination is so popular:

  • Diversity of Experiences: A wildlife safari in Tanzania offers the chance to witness incredible wildlife in their natural habitats, including the iconic Big Five, as well as various other species. • Adventure and Relaxation: The safari part of the trip offers thrilling game drives, bush walks, and wildlife encounters, satisfying the adventurous spirit. Following the safari, Zanzibar offers a tranquil escape, with serene beaches, water activities, and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for relaxation.
  • Ideal Itinerary Balance: The combination of a wildlife safari and a beach getaway creates a well-rounded itinerary, catering to the different interests and preferences of all travelers in the group. It allows for a seamless transition from exciting game drives to leisurely beach days.
  • Post-Safari Relaxation: After days of exploring the savannah and observing wildlife, a beach retreat provides the ultimate opportunity to unwind, sunbathe, and soak in the island’s tropical charm.
  • Romantic Escapes: This combination is particularly popular among honeymooners and couples seeking a romantic vacation. The safari adventure adds excitement and shared experiences, while the serene beaches offer privacy and intimacy.
  • Convenient Travel: Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Manyara, is well-connected to Zanzibar, making it easy to arrange a seamless transfer between the two destinations.

Combining a wildlife safari with Zanzibar’s pristine beaches allows travelers to savor a diverse range of experiences, from thrilling wildlife encounters to tranquil seaside relaxation, making it a dream vacation that caters to all preferences and creates cherished memories for a lifetime.

How to get to Zanzibar after a safari

After completing a safari in Tanzania, there are several options to get to Zanzibar, the enchanting island off the coast of East Africa, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. Here are the most common ways to travel from the safari destinations to Zanzibar:

  • Domestic Flight: The quickest and most convenient way to get to Zanzibar from the safari destinations is by taking a domestic flight. Tanzania has several domestic airlines that operate daily flights from major safari hubs like Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport to Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The flight duration is usually around 1 to 2 hours, offering a seamless and time-saving journey.
  • Road Transfer and Ferry: If you prefer a more budget-friendly option, you can take a road transfer from your safari destination to the port city of Dar es Salaam, followed by a ferry ride to Zanzibar. Many safari operators offer road transfers to Dar es Salaam, and from there, you can catch a ferry to Zanzibar. The ferry ride takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and the overall journey time depends on road conditions and ferry schedules.
  • Charter Flight: Some luxury safari operators or lodges offer the option of chartering a private flight directly to Zanzibar. This exclusive mode of transport allows for a more personalized and direct transfer, perfect for travelers seeking a premium experience and avoiding standard commercial flights or long road journeys.
  • Combination Packages: Many travel agencies and tour operators in Tanzania offer combination packages that include both safari adventures and a stay in Zanzibar. These packages often include transportation arrangements, making it hassle-free for travelers to transition from the safari to the beach without worrying about logistics.

No matter which option you choose, a journey from a safari destination to Zanzibar is a perfect way to extend your East African adventure. Whether you prefer a quick flight to maximize your time on the island or opt for a more budget-friendly road and ferry transfer, the magic of Zanzibar’s pristine beaches and unique culture awaits you after the excitement of a safari in Tanzania.

Best time for a combined Zanzibar and Safari Tour

The best time for safaris in Tanzania and Zanzibar tours is during the dry season, which is from June to October, and the short dry season in January and February. These months offer the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities and provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and beach relaxation. However, keep in mind that Tanzania and Zanzibar have unique charms throughout the year, so you can plan your visit based on your preferences and interests. The best time for safaris and Zanzibar tours in Tanzania depends on various factors such as weather, wildlife migration, and personal preferences. Here’s a breakdown of the ideal times for both:

  • Best time for Safaris in Tanzania: The best time for safaris in Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to October . This period offers the best wildlife viewing opportunities as animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. The weather is generally dry, and the skies are clear, providing excellent visibility for game drives and photography.

Another good time for safaris is during the short dry season from January to February. Although the wildlife is not as concentrated as in the main dry season, it still offers good game-viewing experiences.

The wet season, from November to May, is less favorable for safaris as the rain can make some areas inaccessible, and wildlife disperses in search of water and food. However, the lush green landscapes during this time can be attractive to some travelers, and birdwatching opportunities are abundant.

  • Best time for Zanzibar Tours: You can visit Zanzibar any time of the year but the best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season, which coincides with the dry season for safaris. From June to October , Zanzibar experiences warm, sunny days with minimal rainfall, making it an ideal time to enjoy the island’s beautiful beaches and water activities like snorkeling and diving.

During the short dry season from January to February , Zanzibar also offers pleasant weather and is less crowded than in the main dry season, making it an excellent option for those seeking a quieter beach vacation.

While the wet season from November to May brings more rainfall and higher humidity to Zanzibar, it is still possible to visit during this time. The rain showers are usually short-lived and followed by sunny periods, but there is a higher chance of experiencing tropical storms during this period.
