Predominantly a Shiva temple, it is local myth that one can change his own fate of he seeks blessings in this temple. The Varahi Amman Temple is located in Mangal Nagar, Woraiyur in the Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Saptha Matha Varahi Amman who is regarded as one of the Matrikas. The Matrikas are a group of seven mothers or Goddesses, Saptha Matha being the fifth mother. The temple has inscriptions dating back to 885AD. According to legend, the temple was a result of the ardent devotion of Chola Queen, Kanthimathi. Also called the Nachiyar Koil Mandir, it is believed to have been constructed around the 7th Century in Dravidian style architecture. Located in Tiruchirapalli, the temple has a high religious significance for the Vishnu devotees. Tiruchirappalli, popularly known as Trichy, is claimed to be Tamil Nadu's geographical center. Trichy, also known as "Rock and Temple," is home to numerous prominent temples that every devout person should visit at least once in their life. Apart from Trichy sightseeing and the jungle, it is one of the most established and well-occupied states, that has its heritage and culture with a lot of majestic and historically authentic sites. If you are visiting Trichy, the following are a few temples that you should visit:

1. Ucchi Pillayar Rockfort Temple, Trichy

Built on the 85 m high with 344 steps that lead to the top at the altitude of 273 feet, Ucchi Pillayar Temple also known as the Rock Fort Temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. One can see the amazing view of the river Kaveri, the city of Tichy and Srirangam. By far it is one of the most famous places in Trichy as the name of the Rockfort Ganpathi Temple is derived from its unique building. As the temple comprises huge rocks.

Interesting Fact:

The rocks used in the Rockfort Ganpathi Temple is said to be the oldest rock in the world, even older than the Himalayan Mountains.

The temple is divided into sub-parts- the first being the Thayumanaswamy, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the second is the Pillayar, which is dedicated to the Lord Ganesha. It is said that the origins of the temple are traced back to the 7th century, where, the Shiva temple contains the Lingam form of the lord.

2. Brahma Temple, Trichy

The Hindu temple located in Thirupattur near Trichy, Brahmapureeswarar temple is one of the most famous temples. The Hindu Religious And Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu is in charge of the temple. There is a separate shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma.

In the Brahmapureeswarar temple in Trichy, the worshippers believe that obtaining Lord Brahma's blessings may change one's fate.

Lord Brahma's idol is seated in Padmasana on a lotus in meditation attitude. The temple complex also houses Yogi Patanjali's Jeeva Samadhi, the author of the Yoga Sutras.

3. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Located on the island of Srirangam temple in Trichy,  Sri Ranganathaswamy temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, who is Lord Vishnu’s reclining form. The temple complex is 156 acres in size and was created in the authentic Dravidian style of architecture. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the world's largest operating temple complexes, with 21 gopurams and an elegant entryway. In addition, this is India's highest gopuram.

Interesting Fact: Srirangam is the first of Lord Vishnu's eight self-manifested sanctuaries (Swayam Vyakata Kshetras) in Trichy which is also the world’s biggest temple in the world.

There is also a royal temple tower in the compound that is 196 feet tall. Another distinguishing aspect of this temple is the hall, which contains more than a thousand ornamented and carved pillars. Being the biggest temple in the world, it makes it the most famous temple in Trichy.

4. Varahi Amman Temple

Located in the Trichy, Varahi Amman temple is dedicated to Saptha Matha Varahi Amman, one of the Matrikas. The temple is dedicated to Saptha Matha is the fifth mother of the Matrikas, a group of seven mothers or Goddesses.

Sri Varahi Daasar Boopathi Swami, an extraordinarily ardent and dedicated devotee of the seven Goddesses, constructed the temple at Tiruchirapalli.

5. Vayalur Murugan Temple, Trichy

Trichy's Vayalur Murugan temple is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Muruga. A Chola Dynasty ruler founded it in the 9th century. Because the temple is devoted to Lord Murugan, a manifestation of Lord Shiva, visitors come to pray for a healthy, happy, and successful life. A dip in the temple tank is supposed to eliminate any impediments in one's life.

The Vayalur Murugan temple is another name for the child adoption temple. Adoption occurs here for a limited period due to major malformations in the children. It is said that when children are adopted here for an extended period of time, all negative things leave them and the youngsters enjoy better success in life.

6. Akkaraipatti Shirdi Sai Baba Temple

A visit is incomplete without going to the Akkaraipatti Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Trichy. Akkaraipatti Sai Baba Temple is one of the largest Shirdi Sai Baba temples in Tamil Nadu, covering an area of 35000 square feet. It was dedicated to a little village called Akkaraipatti near Samayapuram, Trichy. The temple complex contains four sub-shrines of Lord Ganesha and other deities, and the temple walls are adorned with mural paintings of the deities.

Trichy presently houses one of the largest temples in South India devoted to Shirdi Sai Baba, a famed Indian saint of the nineteenth century, adding to the city's and state's prestige. The shrine is known as the Akkaraipatti Sai Baba Temple and is located in the little hamlet of Akkaraipatti near Trichy. It is also known as the "Shirdi of South India."

A variety of frescoes depicting Sai Baba's manifestation are painted on the temple's internal false ceiling, which is just amazing.

7. Shiva Temple

Originally known as the Sri Jambukeswarar Temple , it is situated around Trichy. This is an old, huge, and majestic temple that exemplifies prior architectural brilliance. The temple complex covers an area of 18 acres. This area was formerly thickly inhabited with white Naaval trees. It is said that an elephant and a spider worshipped the Lord here and were saved.

This temple's name is taken from this mythology, which is claimed to have been constructed around 2,500 years ago.

At a distance of 1 km from Srirangam Railway Station, 9 km from Trichy Railway Junction, 62 km from Thanjavur, 145 km from Madurai & 327 km from Chennai, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a prominent Hindu temple situated at Srirangam near Trichy. It is one of the famous temples in South India , and among the most visited places in Tamilnadu . Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is the foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines of Lord Vishnu, and among the important places of pilgrimage in Tamilnadu . Built across an area of 156 acres, this temple is dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of Hindu deity, Lord Vishnu. This temple lies on an island formed by the twin Rivers Cauvery and Kollidam. Though the temple existing since the 2nd century BC, the archaeological inscriptions are available only from the 10th century CE. In a daring exploit, devotees of Srirangam ventured to Delhi and enthralled the emperor with their histrionics. Moved by their talent, the emperor was pleased and returned the statue of the deity of Srirangam. During the second invasion in 1323 AD, the deity was taken away before the invading troops reached Srirangam. The deity was kept in the hills of Tirumala Tirupati for 6 decades until its reinstatement in 1371. It is believed that 13,000 devotees laid down their lives in the fierce battle to protect the temple. This temple is the biggest functioning Hindu temple in India and among the top places to visit in Trichy . The vimana over the sanctum of the temple is made up of gold and so is protected by an electric fence. The 236-feet Rajagopura (tower) is the tallest temple tower in India. There is also a royal temple tower, which covers a base area of 32500 sq. ft and has a height of 196 ft. It also comprises a hall containing 1000 pillars. Intricate sculptures are the most attractive part of the hall. The Hall was built during the Vijayanagara period (1336-1565). The second enclosure contains the shrine of Ranganayaki, an incarnation of the Goddess of Lakshmi. The Orlov diamond of 189.62 which is part of the Diamond Fund of the Moscow Kremlin was actually installed as one of the eyes of the deity. During the Carnatic wars, a French soldier disguised himself as a Hindu convert and stole the diamond in 1747. The annual 21-day festival conducted during the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dec / Jan) attracts one million visitors. Jestabishekam (Jun / Jul), Pavithrothsavam (Aug / Sep), Oonjal (Oct / Nov) are other festivals celebrated here. History of the Temple

Anbilanthurai is a combination of the name of this village “Anbil” and the name of this temple “Alanthurai”.

This place is located on the northern bank of the river Coleroon (Kollidam), a tributary of the river Cauvery.

There are some stone inscriptions in the temple which date back to the periods of Cholas and the Hoysalas.

It is believed that this temple was originally a Maada Kovil (a temple built on a raised platform). It was later rebuilt by the Chola King Parantakan-I without the elevated platform.

This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

Nedungalam is situated at a distance of about 4 kms from Thuvakkudi (near Thiruverumbur) on the Thiruchirappalli to Tanjure route. Thuuvakkudi is about 17 kms away from Thiruchirapalli and 42 kms away from Tanjure.

Other Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams near this place are – Thiru Erumbiyur (Thiruverumbur), Mukkeecharam (Urayur) and Thiruchirapalli (Malaikkottai).

• This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 8 th Shiva Sthalam on the Southern bank of the river Cauveri in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai).
• Lord Shiva in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested).
• This Sthalam is considered to be as sacred as Kasi.

This place is also known as “Dakshina Kailash” (Southern Kailash).

There are certain stone inscriptions in this temple which date back to the periods of Chola kings Parakesari Varman, Rajarajan, Rajarajan-III, Kulothungan-III and Aditya Karikalan-II. A few other inscriptions date back to the periods of Pandiyas, Hoisala and Vijayanagaram kingdoms.

The lord here is praised by many names - Nedungalanatha Swamy, Nedungalathu Mahadevar, Nedungalathu Nayanar, Kalanthai Nayakar, Kayilayathu Mahadevar and Sundaramurthy.

Sri Dharukavaneswarar Temple at Thirupparaithurai.

Thirupparaithurai is situated at a distance of about 16 kms from Trichy on the Trichy to Karur (via Kulithalai) route.

There is a railway station in Thirupparaithurai on the Trichy – Erode railway line, which is about one km away from this temple.

Following this tradition, as this temple is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri, it gets the name Paraithurai.

In Sanskrit, Parai tree is known as “Dharuka Viruksham”. Hence, the historical name of this place is Dharukavanam.

There are 83 stone inscriptions in this temple which date back to the periods of Paranthaka Chola-I, Rajakesari Varman, Sundarapandiyan and Krishnadeva Maharayar.

Sri Gneelivaneswarar Temple at Thiruppaigneeli.

Thiruppaigneeli is situated at a distance of about 20 kms from Trichy.

From Trichy, first reach Mannachanallur (11kms) and then proceed to Thiruppaigneeli (8 kms). Nearest railway station is Pitchandar Koil.

• Thiruppainjeeli is referred to as “South Kailash”.
• The uniqueness of this temple is that there is a shrine for Lord Yama (Lord of death).
• This is one of the “Saptha Sthana” temples of Thiruvanaikkaval.
• This is one of the famous “parikara sthalams” for conducting poojas to remove obstacles from marriage proposals and to seek child boon.
• This east facing temple’s main tower (Rajagopuram) is incomplete and its second tower has 3 tiers. This temple has four corridors.
• The last consecration ceremony (Mahakumbabishekam) took place on 02.02.2017 and prior to that on 06.02.2003.

This ancient temple is situated on the northern bank of the river Kollidam. This temple complex is spread over sprawling 12 acres of land.  

The temple’s main tower is believed to have been built by King Konerinmai Kondaan and it is only constructed up to the first tier.

Thiruvanaikkaval is a part of Trichy (also known as Thiruchirappalli) and is situated at a distance of about 8 kms from the Trichy bus stand. It is 3 kms away from Srirangam and is between the Kollidam and Cauvery rivers.

This is an ancient, sprawling and magnificent temple which highlights the architectural splendour of the past. The temple complex is a whopping 18 acres of land. In ancient times, this place was densely populated with white Naaval trees.

The temple was built about 2,500 years ago by the Emperor Kochengat Chola.  

It is believed that an elephant and a spider have worshiped the lord here and obtained salvation. The name of this temple is derived from this legend. “Thiru” is a respectful prefix, “Anai” means elephant and “koil” means temple in Tamil. Now it is known as “Thiruvanaikkaval”.

Sri Maatrurai Varadeeswarar temple at Thirupachilachiramam (Thiruvasi).

Thiruvasi is located at a distance of about 13 kms from Trichy on the Trichy-Salem route via Ayyanpalayam. Nearest railway station is Uttamarkoil which is 5 kms away from this place.

It is believed that this temple is 1500 years old and was built and renovated by Kings of the Hoysala, Chola and Pandiya dynasties. This temple is situated on the northern bank of the river Kollidam (Coleroon).

The historical name of this place is “Pachil Kutrathu Achiramam” which has been changed to Pachilachiramam.  

As per the stone inscriptions, during the Chola and Pandiya period, the places on the northern bank of the river Kollidam was called “Parchil Kutram”. The village around it was called Thiruvachiramam. This was later changed to Thiruvasi.  

Also, in ancient times this place was densely populated with Vanni trees. For this reason, this place is also known as Sameevanam and the lord here is praised as Sri Sameevaneswarar.

Trichy or Tiruchirappalli is an important educational,commercial and manufacturing centre of Tamil Nadu. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, India + Trichy Travel Tips

The main reason for visiting Tiruchirappalli (Trichy for short) is the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple complex, a vast collection of temple towers and carved pillars on the outskirts of this busy city in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The other reason to visit is that it’s one of the cheapest destinations in India to fly to from Southeast Asia. A combination of the two bought me to Trichy in May, amid the sweltering heat of early summer. Are you planning a trip to Trichy? I’ve compiled some Trichy travel tips as well as a visual tour through one of the most striking temples in Asia.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

The local bus dropped me a short walk from the main gate of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. The candy coloured carvings of this mammoth structure stood tall over streets full of chaos and commerce. From there it was a short walk to the main part of the temple through more colourful gate tower things (officially known as gopurams). The massive towers (the largest being 72 metres — the tallest temple structure in Asia) are definitely the highlights, but there is a lot more to see on the inside (although non Hindus can’t access the inner sanctum).

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is free to visit, although you might have to pay a few rupees to store your shoes. An official looking guy will probably offer to show you the rooftop where you’ll get a good view of the towers — take him up on it but beware that he’ll put the hard sell on you to tour you around the temple. It’s easy enough to reject the advances but that kind of thing does get annoying!

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple complex is one of the largest in India and it takes a good hour or two to explore. There are some nice carved pillars to see as well as various temple structures both small and large. I’m not really into the religious side of things (I just like seeing cool buildings) but if you want to learn more about the meaning behind what you’re seeing a guide would be a good idea.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple Information

• Location: Around 14 km from the railway station. An auto rickshaw should cost around INR 200 or you can take a local bus (lots seem to go there – ask a local!).
• History: Most of what you see dates back to between the 14 th and 17 th centuries, although the biggest tower was only completed in 1987.

Other Things to Do in Trichy

Rock Fort Temple

The other main place to see in Trichy is the Rock Fort Temple, located on a hill close to the centre of town. There are quite a few stairs to walk up but the view from the top is worth it. There is also an old church close to the Rock Fort Temple and some other temples scattered throughout the city.

A day trip to Thanjavur

I’ll be writing a full post about this so I won’t go into too much detail, but I recommend checking out Thanjavur if you’re in the area. It’s only a 90 minute train ride from Trichy and you’ll get to see Brihadishvara Temple, built in 1003 AD, as well as a fort / palace complex.

Trichy Travel Tips

• Where to stay: I stayed right next to the train station and it was convenient (although not the nicest area). I stayed at Sankar Inn (it seemed like the best budget / midrange option in the area) and it was a solid choice.
• Getting around: I took the bus to both the Rock Fort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and a train to Thanjavur. Travelling on local transport in India can be confusing at times but there are always plenty of locals willing to help. I even got a free breakfast from the couple I was sitting next to on the train. Auto rickshaws are another option — they are cheap (especially if you are travelling with someone else) and convenient but don’t forget to bargain!
• Where to next? There are so many onward travel options. You could stay in Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Pondicherry, and Madurai) or head pretty much anywhere else in India. I went to Madurai next (2.5 hours) and then to Mysore, Hampi and further north eventually ending up in Kolkata. There’s no particular route or tourist trail in India so pick the places that seem the most interesting to you and try to make it happen.

@Jon Algie, This is something I didn't know (me being Hindu). Did they tell you reason they quoted when they said this?

The only 3 reasons I know - 1) attire (some specific attire is required by everybody to enter a temple), 2) core area where shrine exists even hindus wont be allowed, it is a priests area only. 3) Particular poojas - some poojas restrict on who can attend but that is rare, not everyday.

Apart from this I don't know of any restriction I live in UK and sometimes my friends (brits) tend to run their itinerary through me - so I would want to explain this to them next time.

Hey Jameela, I wouldn't think you'd have a problem, although as a non Hindu there were areas in these temples that I couldn't visit.

It is an old fort, and big rocks make up its framework. Thayumanavar temple, Manikka Vinayagar temple, and Ucchi Pillayar Temple are three well-known Hindu temples located inside the Rockfort. One of the oldest buildings in Tamil Nadu, this temple is a must-see for its remarkable architecture.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Sri Ranganathaswamy temple is one of the other well-known Trichy tourist places in Srirangam Town. This prominent Lord Vishnu temple is constructed in the Dravidian architectural style and is a must-see for all Nirvana seekers and photo enthusiasts. In addition, the temple contains a royal temple tower and a hall with around 1,000 ornamented pillars.

Jambukeshwar Temple

One of the most sacred locations to visit in Trichy is the Jambukeshwar temple, popularly known as the Thiruvanaikoil temple. It is one of Tamil Nadu’s five principal temples to Lord Shiva. The temples were constructed by the Chola in the Dravidian architectural style during the second century AD. For anyone interested in the local religion or who wants to learn more about Tamil Nadu’s culture, this temple is a must-see tourist place in Trichy.

Puliyancholai Waterfalls

Another well-known picnic location in Trichy is Puliyancholai Waterfalls, situated at the foothills of Kollimalai. The tranquil setting draws lots of visitors to these magnificent falls. It is a tourist place in Trichy for peace and tranquillity unlike any other in the city and is well known for its beautiful splendour. The major bus stop in Thuraiyur has buses that may take you this fall, and the hilltop has basic amenities, including restaurants and resorts.

Vekkali Amman Temple

One of the other well-known tourist attractions in Trichy is the Vekkali Amman temple devoted to Goddess Parvathi. The temple is oriented northward because it was thought to bring victory in the conflict. The worshippers’ gifts of gold and silver were used to construct the sanctuary in this magnificent temple. Even now, a sizable number of pilgrims go there to ask for Vekkali Amman’s blessings before any significant event occurs in their life. Important occasions like Chithirai, Navratri, Karthikai, and Aadi Perukku are also celebrated in the temple.

Railway Museum

One of the top places to visit in Trichy for families with children is the Railway Museum or Railway Heritage Center. The museum displays train-related items, vintage artefacts, and digital archives of South India’s railroad history, including maps, manuals, records, and photos. In the outside areas, there is a working miniature railway and old locomotives on display. It is not only a terrific site for children but also for those who are interested in trains and want to spend some time learning more about Indian railways.

St. Joseph’s Church

St. Joseph’s Church is one of the many ancient churches in Trichy. One of India’s oldest churches, built by Schwartz in 1792, it has witnessed numerous historical events connected to colonial administration. The church was constructed when Britain was in power, a time of widespread Christian conversion; as a result, British people used the church to propagate Christianity.

Agaya Gangai Waterfalls

Agaya Gangai Waterfalls, which plunge 300 feet to the ground, are found in the Eastern Ghats’ Kolli Hills. The waterfalls are accessible via a walk or by ascending over 1,000 steps. Monsoon season is the greatest time to visit the waterfalls. It is one of the best tourist places in Trichy.

Varahi Amman Temple

In Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district, Mangal Nagar, Woraiyur is home to the Varahi Amman temple. One of the Matrikas named Saptha Matha Varahi Amman is honoured in the temple. Saptha Matha is the fifth of the seven mothers, or goddesses, who make up the Matrikas. Sri Varahi Daasar Boopathi Swami, an incredibly devoted follower of the seven goddesses, constructed the temple at Tiruchirapalli.

Every state now has a National Institute of Technology (NIT), which was established by the Indian government. The top-ranked NIT in India is NIT Trichy, located in Tamil Nadu. The Regional Engineering College was the previous name for NIT.

An MBA programme is offered by the college’s Department of Management Studies (DOMS). The college’s main entrance is visible from the highway connecting Trichy and Tanjore, and it has a nice appearance.

Street Shopping

Numerous street sellers selling anything from fashion jewellery to electronics line the short path inside the Main Guard Gate. It is the place to go if you like crowds and activities. Since prices are never set, one should be prepared to barter. The Femina Mall, which spans many floors, is now available to the public for a more structured shopping experience. A trip to the hypermarket is worthwhile.

Periya Kovil

Trichy is located 57 kilometres from the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur (Thanjai), also known as Periya Kovil. It serves as evidence of the improvements made to temple design during the Chola era. Raja Raja Cholan constructed it in 1010 AD, and it is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Lord Shiva-dedicated Brihadeeswarar temple is renowned for its majesty and magnificent sculptures. The temple complex occupies a large space of 33,000 square feet. The main draw of this temple is its 13-tier, Dravidian-style tower. On top of the tower is a Kumba (a ball-shaped structure) that weighs 80 tonnes. How they managed to raise something weighing 80 tonnes and put it on top of a 200-foot tower millennia ago is a mystery.

Thiruvanaikaval

Thiruvanaikaval is located in Tiruchirappalli  on the banks of the river Kaveri on the Srirangam Island. The temple’s goddess is Shri Akhilandeshwari and lord Shiva. The temple is known as the Pancha Bh00ta Sthalam-the place with the five elements, where water is the presiding element in the temple.

Rock Cut Temples, Pudukkottai

The granite hillocks in Malayadipatti village, Pudukkottai district, are home to rock-cut temples. In Tamil, “Malayadipatti” refers to a settlement at the base of a mountain. On the hillocks, there are two rock-cut temples. The oldest one is a rock-cut mandapa inside a Shiva temple that the Pallavas erected in the eighth century. In this temple, several antiquated sculptures are beautiful to behold.

On the western side of the mountain, the later structure is a Vishnu temple. In addition to the sculptures, the rock-cut Vishnu temple is well known for the paintings found on the walls and ceiling. This temple contains several pieces that date to the 16th and 17th centuries AD. Other caves have Jain-influenced texts and sculptures from the third century AD.

What would be the ideal itinerary for Trichy?

Trichy's abundance of various locations inside the same city is a huge plus because it means that they are all very close to one another. Start with Rockfort temple, one of South India's most striking Ganesha temples. Visit either the Vekkaliamman temple or the Sri Ranga Nathaswamy temple after that, and then the other. The former temple is a little off the beaten path, but you will need to detour it in order to see it. After that, visit St. John's Church, one of Trichy's most well-known Christian sites, before finishing your day by watching the sunset at Kallanai Dam.

How can one commute in Trichy?

There is a vast network of transportation options in the city. The most popular means of transportation are local buses and auto rickshaws. Additionally, cabs are readily available. Upon payment of additional fees, special arrangements can also be made through your hotel. The two most significant bus stops in the city are Central Bus Stand and Chatram Bus Stand. Buses from all across the city and the surrounding areas arrive there often.
