snorkel trip kauai

Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate "rain forests of the sea," one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.

All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include

  • Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners.
  • Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR.
  • High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear.
  • Lunch and drinks

Beginning Snorkelers

Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt. Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time.

For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.

Snorkel Gear

Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures.

  • Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!)
  • "Dry" easy purge snorkels.
  • Comfortable fins in all sizes.
  • Snorkel vests - for buoyancy.
  • Non-fog spray

Kauai Snorkel Tips

Always use property fitting snorkel gear.

Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety.

Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses

What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.

Safety First

If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips:

  • When in doubt, don’t go out.
  • Always snorkel with a buddy.
  • Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far.
  • For beginners, going with an experienced snorkerler is recommended.

Who Can Snorkel?

Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.

What Do I Need To Bring?

Are there safety concerns.

If you are snorkeling with Capt. Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

Snorkeling Tours

On the nā pali coast.

Kauaʻi offers world-class snorkeling destinations teeming with fish and filled with beautiful coral reefs. Dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, eels, and more have been sighted across the coral reefs of Kauai. Depending on the tour and weather, your Captain will choose the most promising snorkeling destination for that day. Come aboard our luxurious catamaran or adventurous raft tours to explore snorkeling locations in clear waters, hidden coves, sea caves, beneath cliffs, and the most beautiful spots along the coast. Snorkeling in Kauai is always an adventure!

  • Chevron down Weather & Visibility Notice

Snorkeling is weather dependent. Don’t worry, if snorkeling is not in the cards that day, your Captain will know the best tour alternative for an unforgettable adventure.

Kauaʻi can be hit or miss when it comes to visibility. Due to the abundance of waterfalls, when we have heavy rains in the mountains, the freshwater has a tendency to make the water murky. Nature will deal from its deck your paradise card: awe-inspiring, fresh rain-fueled waterfalls or pristine snorkeling conditions. In either case, your Captain will either find a location with better visibility or guide you along an equally incredible journey.

"This tour was the ideal experience for exploring the North Shore of Kauai. Captain Steve and his son were so knowledgeable about everything, from the names of the waterfalls to the legends the cliffs and valleys hold. I’ve only done a tour like this once before, and it was on a zodiac boat, which was bumpy and not as enjoyable. This boat was the ideal size to handle the waves, as well as fit into sea caves along the Napoli Coast. Captain Steve was an excellent driver, and we never felt unsafe, even inside caves with big waves. I would highly recommend this family-owned and operated company for your next boat tour."

"My husband and I did the afternoon 4 hour Na Pali coast and snorkel tour. It was the highlight of our time in Kauai! Captain Steve and his co-captain (blanking on her name but she was awesome) were fantastic tour guides. I loved Captain Steve's personal touches to every story he told about the coast as well as his knowledge and understanding of the ocean. He took us through sea caves and gave us a taste of the Na Pali "Rollercoaster Ride." The snorkeling was awesome too! Both of them gave clear instructions about safety and frequently checked on passengers to make sure everyone was feeling OK. In addition to the actual tour, their website explains exactly what you get and gives accurate information about what to expect. We went during a time when Kuhio highway to Hanalei was under construction due to a landslide a few months prior and there was a limited amount of time to get into the area. It was clearly stated on the website along with the time you needed to make the trip. The booking staff did a great job communicating with us about what to expect and was very helpful. I cannot say enough great things about this tour and company! Definitely recommend!!"

"To be honest, we accidentally booked this tour instead of one the the competitors that we had done before—and we are so glad we did! Captain Steve and his mate Dave were fantastic, super informative and fun, and they took us into coves and caves that we’d missed before. The lunch was surprisingly good! This is one tour you don’t want to miss, the Napali coast is beyond stunning from this viewpoint, and the snorkeling was great as well. It was definitely a highlight of our trip."

"Wonderful staff, left on time, organized, beautiful views of the coast and sea caves along the way, great snorkeling location where you get to see all kinds of sea life and well worth the price to be able to leave right from Hanalei Bay."

"If you want to ride out on some massive waves and get a great view of the Napali coast, book this adventure with captain Steve & crew. Cap'n Steve navigated the Northern waters with ease and grace. My wife and I had a blast going in & out of remote sea caves and under water falls on this epic tour. An absolute must do on a Kauai visit."

Captain J's NaPali Coast Raft Tours Kauai

17 Miles of Breath-Taking Beauty

Kauai’s stunning napali coast.

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most recognizable and beautiful coastlines in the world.  “The cliffs” up to 4,000 feet high, provide a rugged grandeur of deep, narrow valleys ending abruptly at the sea.  Spanning 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore, the Na Pali Coast is a sacred place defined by extraordinary beauty.

The rugged terrain appears much as it did centuries ago when Hawaiian settlements flourished in these deep, narrow valleys, existing only on the food they could grow and the fish they could catch. Extensive stone-walled terraces can still be found on the valley bottoms where Hawaiians once lived and cultivated taro.

Captain’s Tara and Elijah were wonderful and the eco tour was one of the highlights of our trip. From the minute we boarded the raft, we knew we were in good hands. They are so knowledgeable about the island history and sea life. This is an expertly run operation and I highly recommend them.

Mock and Megan were fantastic. They showed us sites our family will never forget. They made sure everyone was comfortable and safe. Snorkeling was great, cave exploring was spectacular, turtles, dolphins, awe inspiring scenery on the Nepali Coast, everything an adventure should be. DO THIS!

Our crew of 9 had a blast on our Na Pali coast tour. Nick and Megan were kind, knowledgable guides, and the ride in the zodiac was so fun! Nick managed to find a calm spot for snorkeling, despite huge waves due to the wind. We also saw more dolphins than we could count. Highly recommend!

The zodiac boat was more nimble to get close to marine wildlife such as dolphins, giving me the ability to get some great videos of dolphins underwater. Tara was very knowledgeable provided great information all around. Her assistant, Megan, was a very helpful as well. This tour exceeded our expectations!

Kauai is beautiful. Both on the land and underwater. But finding a great place to snorkel in Kauai isn’t as easy as just pulling over on the side of the road and jumping in the water. There are currents to contend with and rocky beaches, which can make entering and exiting the water a challenge.

To help you find the best places to snorkel on Kauai, we rounded up these five top spots.

Kauai Snorkeling FAQs:

Does kauai have good snorkeling.

Kauai has great snorkeling and in a number of spots you’ll be able to see plenty of sea life without going too far from shore. While it’s not the best island for snorkeling, thanks to challenging ocean currents during the winter months, you can still find a number of great places to get in the water and enjoy the colorful fish.

Which Side of Kauai is best for snorkeling?

You can snorkel all over Kauai, but the best snorkeling spots are found on the north and south shore. Whether you’ll find better snorkeling on the north or south side of Kauai depends on the time of year. During the winter months, the best snorkeling on Kauai is on the south shore, where the most popular spots have calm water. During the summer months, the best snorkeling is found on Kauai’s north shore, when you’ll experience very few waves in the best snorkeling spots.

Can you swim with turtles on Kauai?

When you’re snorkeling on Kauai, you’ll likely see a turtle or two swimming along with you. If you want to increase your chances of seeing a sea turtle while you’re snorkeling, head to these spots:

  • Koloa Landing: You won’t find super clear water here, but you’ll find a number of resident turtles that hang out near the boat launch area.
  • Anini Beach: If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot turtles swimming close to shore here, even before you get into the water.
  • Poipu Beach: Near the rocky area that separates Poipu from Brennecke’s Beach, you’ll often find turtles eating.

While it can be exciting to swim with turtles, remember that you will need to keep your distance. It’s recommended to stay at least 10 feet away from turtles in the water.

And since we’re talking about respecting the ocean life, you’ll definitely want to make sure you only use reef safe sunscreen before you jump in (it’s the law).

Best time of year to snorkel on Kauai?

While you can snorkel year-round on Kauai, the best time to snorkel is during the summer months. You’ll have access to the most snorkeling spots, including those on the north shore. Because currents and waves become very dangerous during the winter months on the north shore of Kauai, the best snorkeling spots there are only accessible during the summer.

Best Snorkeling on Kauai for beginners?

Though it looks easy when you’re watching from the beach, snorkeling is actually a difficult activity. Particularly, if you’re a beginner. You have ocean currents to contend with, waves, and breathing into a tube which can feel unnatural.

In our opinion, the best snorkeling spot on Kauai for beginners is the pond at Lydgate beach. The water is protected from most currents, the bottom is mostly sandy, and there is a lifeguard on duty.

1. Makua (Tunnels) Beach

Often cited as the best snorkeling spot on Kauai, Tunnels Beach offers summer snorkelers plenty of opportunities to swim among plenty of fish and other sea life. But, you have to work for it. First, parking is a challenge. The best place to find parking is at Haena Beach Park (not to be confused with Hā’ena State Park). You’ll need to arrive early or be prepared to wait for a parking spot to open up.

Once you’ve secured parking, you’re in for a bit of a walk. You’ll head to the right and then after a few hundred yards you’ll see the reef close to the shore. This is where you can head into the water to enjoy the different types of fish, and possibly a turtle or two. The outer reef is exposed to strong currents, so stay closer to shore for an easier snorkeling experience.

This is not a spot to snorkel during the winter, thanks to strong ocean currents and swells on the north shore of Kauai. So enjoy it during the summer and head south in the winter.

Best Snorkeling Spots on Kauai Tunnels

2. Ke’e Beach

You have to plan well in advance for this one, but it’s absolutely worth it. This is probably the most beautiful beach in Kauai (bold statement, but true) and it offers some amazing snorkeling with a reef very close to the shore. Beware that outside of the reef you will encounter strong currents and rip tides, so it’s important to not venture too far away. But you won’t need to as the fish and sea life near shore is plentiful. A bonus for snorkeling here is that as you’re heading back towards shore, you can look up and see the beautiful Napali Coast mountains. This stunning setting is worth a visit, even without snorkeling.

Ke’e Beach also made our list of the best beaches on Kauai for swimming .

A reservation to visit Haena State Park and Ke’e beach is required and must be booked well in advance (it sells out quickly!). Just like Tunnels Beach, snorkeling here in the winter can be dangerous, so keep this place on the top of your list for summer vacations only.

Best snorkeling Kauai Ke'e Beach

3. Anini Beach

We love to take our 3-year-old son to this beach because the shallow reef keeps waters calm. I’ve seen some sources note that Anini Beach is the longest and widest reef in Hawaii. But it’s not just the calm water that brings people to Anini — you can also enjoy some great snorkeling here. Without needing to go far from the shore, you can see plenty of sea life amongst the coral and you can often spot a turtle or two. The water at Anini beach is shallow, and snorkeling during low tide can often mean you’re navigating areas that are too shallow to easily swim in with visibility that isn’t as clear as you’d like to have when looking at the beautiful fish.

Anini beach is long and there are two main areas people visit. The first, Anini Beach Campground offers facilities like showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and a boat ramp. Continuing past that you’ll find a few places to park along the road and continue walking the long stretches of beach.

As this is a north shore beach, currents and waves can get very dangerous in the winter, making this a bad place to get into the water during those months. Make sure to always check Hawaii Beach Safety to see current conditions and learn ways to keep yourself safe in the water.

Best Snorkeling Spots Kauai Anini Beach

4. Lydgate Beach

If you’re looking for an easy place to snorkel practically year-round, the pond at Lydgate Beach is your answer. Built with a wall of rocks to enclose it, this pond protects swimmers and snorkelers from the powerful waves and currents that are just on the other side of the rocks. But those rocks don’t keep fish from entering the pond. We were able to see large surgeonfish swimming from side to side.

Lydgate Beach is also a beach park full of amenities including a lifeguard station, bathrooms, and a large playground.

Best Snorkeling Kauai Lydgate Beach

5. Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach on the south shore of Kauai is not only one of the best beaches in Hawaii , but it is also an excellent place to snorkel. At Poipu Beach you’ll find plenty of marine life: turtles, a number of fish, and the occasional monk seal. And you don’t need to snorkel far from shore to see a wide array of sealife — the reef is a quick swim from shore.

At Poipu Beach, you’ll find two crescent-shaped beaches separated by a shallow sandbar. The area on the left is calmer and offers easy swimming. The area on the right has a few more waves but is a more popular snorkeling spot.

You also have a lifeguard here and plenty of parking, making this a fantastic place to head for snorkeling.

Remember, Hawaiian Monk Seals are endangered animals so if you do encounter them, stay away and give them their space.

See Turtles on our Top-Rated Kauai Snorkeling Tours

We got up close and personal - but not too close - to about 5 green sea turtles. The two spots we visited were great, the 1st was a hangout for turtles and the 2nd a reef closer to shore schooling with fish... We really loved this trip and the great sea life we saw, and enjoyed Davey and Dave as our guides.

So nice to get up close and personal...none of this 50 people to a boat business. Very knowledgeable staff. JC and Jon were amazing! Found the whales right away and shared some very interesting facts on the trip. Highly recommend!

We saw a ton of turtles & even a small shark. They went out of their way to make sure the experience was amazing & it was! Would definitely recommend booking thru Zodiac! The picnic lunch at the harbor was a nice ending to a wonderful morning!

First time going on a rafted boat tour. I enjoyed the fantastic captain (JC and her crew). They made the trip so much fun. I enjoyed the opportunity to snorkel in some amazing places that I would never had known about. I highly recommend booking your next trip with Z tours.

My 8yr old and I absolutely loved this experience! The crew is so friendly and fun to be around as well as knowledgeable of the area and helpful going out of their way to ensure each guest has what they need. We saw so many sea turtles and beautiful fish! This was our best adventure of the vacation I would go again over and over!

Need  snorkel gear ? No problem! Rentals are available right at Ke’e Beach, making it easy for everyone to explore beneath the waves.

Just remember, a visit here requires some planning ahead – you must book your reservation to Haena State Park and Ke’e beach well in advance to secure your spot in this slice of Hawaiian heaven. One of the best snorkel spots on Kauai.

The beach shines brightest in the summer, providing  crystal-clear waters  teeming with life.

You’ll want to wade into the water from sandy spots to avoid harming the  precious coral reefs .

Come winter, though, Tunnels becomes less suitable for snorkeling due to  strong currents and rough swells . That makes it a  seasonal gem best enjoyed in warmer, summer months .

For those up for an adventure, this spot ranks high among Kauai’s snorkeling locales.

Just keep in mind its  popularity with experienced divers  and respect the ocean’s power while enjoying its wonders.

Anini Beach - kauai snorkel spot

Lydgate Beach Park - kauai snorkel spots

Lydgate Beach Park is a  family-friendly spot  that makes snorkeling in Kauai a breeze, especially for beginners. With its  natural saltwater wading pool  and  protective rock wall , it offers calm waters year-round.

Here, gentle waves and shallow water welcome you to easily step in and meet the local marine life.

Lifeguards are on duty here, making it a safe choice for your ocean adventures.

Plus, with restrooms, shaded picnic tables, and trash cans available, Lydgate Beach Park provides all the conveniences needed for a full day of fun under the sun and exploring beneath the waves.

Lawai Beach - kauai snorkel spots

Prince Kuhio Beach, also known to many as Lawai Beach, offers a  unique snorkeling adventure  you won’t want to miss. This beach stands out with its mostly  lava rock landscape , setting the scene for an underwater world teeming with  marine life .

You’ll find yourself swimming alongside colorful fish and maybe even spotting a Hawaiian green sea turtle or two.

Here, the water is clear and inviting, making it easier for snorkelers of all levels to explore the  vibrant coral reefs just below the surface.

The beach’s location on  Kauai’s sunny south shore  adds to its appeal, providing excellent conditions for those looking to enjoy some of the best snorkeling on the island.

So grab your gear and get ready to be amazed by the beauty that lies beneath the waves at Prince Kuhio Beach.

Salt Pond Beach Park - kauai snorkel spots

Salt Pond Beach Park shines as a  top pick for beginner snorkelers  visiting Kauai. Its calm waters, thanks to an offshore reef, create the perfect conditions for your first dip into snorkeling.

With  lifeguards on duty and convenient beach facilities, you’ll find everything needed for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Picture yourself gliding over sandy entry points into  crystal clear waters where rainbow-colored wrasses and parrotfish play among huge rocks in shallow areas.

As you explore further, keep your eyes peeled for the elusive  Hawaiian monk seals  that sometimes grace these waters. It’s a treat to see them, but give them space and let the lifeguards know they’re around.

At Salt Pond Beach Park, the undersea world welcomes you with open arms—featuring unicornfish darting through coral formations and sea cucumbers inching along the ocean floor.

This spot promises not just great snorkeling but a peek into Hawaii’s vibrant marine ecosystem right off its shores.

Snorkeling in Kauai? You’re in for a treat! The island’s crystal-clear waters and rich marine life make it a top spot. Before you jump in, here’s some snorkeling tips to make your adventure unforgettable.

Go snorkeling when the sun is bright and the sea is calm. This will give you the clearest view of fish and coral below. Early mornings are usually best – less crowded too!

Always keep safety in mind. Watch out for strong currents and stay within areas marked safe for swimming. And remember, never touch the marine life; enjoy watching them from a distance.

The best time to snorkel in Kauai is during the  summer months . This period offers  calmer currents and waves , making it safer for you. If you’re planning a trip around this time,

Ke’e Beach  is an ideal spot for your underwater adventure, especially with its calm waters.

To enjoy snorkeling on Kauai’s North Shore or around the island’s beloved spots like Tunnels Beach and Poipu Beach, timing your visit from  May through September  optimizes your experience.

The ocean is more welcoming then, giving you  clear views of fish, sea turtles , and maybe even the occasional  Hawaiian monk seal close to shore .

Visiting Hawaii offers you a chance to explore some of the best snorkeling spots in Kauai. Before you get into the water, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind.

Here are key precautions to ensure your underwater adventures are both fun and safe.

  • Check the weather and ocean conditions before heading out. Strong currents and high waves can make snorkeling dangerous, especially during winter months at places like Ke’e Beach.
  • Always  snorkel with a buddy . It’s safer and more fun when you have someone to share the experience with. Plus, you can look out for each other.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen  to protect yourself from sunburn without harming marine life. The chemicals in regular sunscreens can damage coral reefs and the creatures that call them home.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks  when you need them. Snorkeling can be tiring, so make sure to drink plenty of water and rest on the beach or in the shade.
  • Respect marine life  by not touching or feeding fish and other sea animals. Some species are endangered, like Hawaiian green sea turtles and monk seals, so it’s important to admire them from a distance.
  • Wear a life jacket  if you’re not a strong swimmer or if swimming conditions are tough. It’s an easy way to stay safe while enjoying your snorkeling adventure.
  • Be mindful of where you step or kick  while snorkeling over shallow reefs, such as at Anini Beach, to avoid damaging coral or injuring yourself on sharp rocks.
  • Pay attention to signs at beaches  that may warn of hazards or restricted areas meant for your safety as well as for environmental protection efforts.
  • Ensure your equipment fits well before getting into the water; poorly fitting gear can leak or become uncomfortable, distracting you from safely enjoying your snorkel experience.
  • Educate yourself on local regulations and etiquette—this includes understanding designated snorkeling areas, respecting no-touch rules for coral reefs, and knowing what to do if you encounter wildlife like sea turtles or seals.

Following these simple steps lets everyone enjoy the best snorkeling on Kauai while keeping both snorkelers and marine ecosystems safe and healthy.

As we’ve explored the best places to snorkel in Kauai, from the tranquil waters of Ke’e Beach to the vibrant marine life at Tunnels Beach, it’s clear that Kauai offers some of the most fantastic snorkeling conditions in the world.

Each beach is also a unique gateway to underwater wonders, whether you’re gazing at the largest reef on Kauai at Anini Beach or swimming alongside sea turtles at Poipu Beach.

Now that you’re armed with knowledge about where to find the best snorkeling spots, why not plan your next adventure?

Grab your snorkel gear and get ready to explore the underwater beauty of Kauai.

Remember, the ocean’s mysteries are vast and waiting to be discovered. Let’s respect and preserve these natural treasures for future generations to enjoy.

From the calm, inviting snorkeling conditions to the rich biodiversity beneath the waves, Kauai is truly a snorkeler’s paradise.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, these spots promise unforgettable underwater experiences. So, what are you waiting for? Kauai’s clear, warm waters are calling.

After a short drive we got to see a bunch of dolphins. Great experience!! Drive up the coast with nice stories and scenery was perfect. Only to stop and swim with some turtles. A perfect day!"

"This was absolutely the highlight of our time in Hawaii! If you are on the fence about doing a boat tour, then stop looking now and book with Na Pali Experience. Snorkeling with sea turtles, incredible views, and coming back with the sunset light hitting the mountains... nothing comes close! We would highly recommend this tour to anyone!"

"My Na Pali Pirates experience was amazing! Fun, fast raft rides on exciting water? Check! Epic views of the Na Pali coast? Check! Sea caves? Check! Snorkeling with sea turtles? Check! But most importantly, Jake and Jacob were incredible incredible guides! Fun and knowledgeable with the perfect amount of dad jokes and great tunes! This is seriously a MUST DO, and I will continue to do this raft tour any time I am back in Kauai! Stop looking at other boat tours of the Na Pali coast and book this one! It's fun and exciting and you will be supporting a LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS! Thank you to "The Jakes" for an epic time!

"The 35’ Deluxe Catamaran “Cadillac of the Caves” was AMAZING! Do not miss this when you’re in Kauai. Brian and Capt. Nate were fun, kind, knowledgeable, patient…all the things. They personally made sure every single person was comfortable and having fun the whole time. They shared tons of knowledge about Kauai and the Napali coast, played music, made us laugh, and were obviously capable and at ease on the ocean. The deluxe catamaran was big enough to be comfortable, but small enough to fit in caves and be an exciting ride. My husband and 7 year old sat in bench seats in the middle of the boat, while my 10 year old and I rode up front for a more exciting ride. We stopped to snorkel and they provided good equipment. They also put out snacks and drinks while we were in the water. They made sure everyone had enough time in the water and didn’t feel rushed back. Our family all took Dramamine the night before and again about an hour before we got on the boat, and we all felt fine the whole time. Do take similar precautions if you’re at all worried about sea sickness. I cannot recommend this company and experience highly enough. It was one of my favorite days ever! It was the experience of a lifetime to take in the gorgeous scenery in such a fun and exciting way. The experience and memories are worth the price. Book it!

"A beautiful small boat tour for 6 cruising the Na Pali coast. The boat is small enough to go into the caves. JD was a great captain! He was very friendly, knowledgeable and experienced which was very reassuring when it came to the big waves since it was a very windy day."

They said her husband drowned snorkeling, but she saw him walk to shore. What happened?

snorkel trip kauai

A Michigan woman and her family are suing a Maui resort , the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau after her husband died while snorkeling . She doesn’t believe it was a drowning.

Patricia and Ray Johnson, along with four friends, arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui on the evening of Feb. 23, 2022, with plans to visit multiple islands over several weeks. This was the couple’s sixth time in Hawaii, and they had snorkeled the Hawaiian waters many times in the past, Patricia told USA TODAY.

On the morning of Feb. 25, some of the travelers, including Ray, went snorkeling around Wailea Beach, which fronts the resort, while Patricia opted to walk a trail that overlooks the beach. “I looked out, and I saw my husband and my friends or people out there,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m waving at him, and it hits me.” Patricia saw what looked like other snorkelers helping Ray.

She hurried down to the beach, but “things deteriorated quickly.” At first, Ray had his head above water and was returning to the beach, but then the 64-year-old fell onto his back with his head “snapped back at one point” and had to be pulled in. “I knew he was gone,” she said. 9-1-1 was called, but medical professionals failed to resuscitate Ray.

The autopsy report called Ray’s death an accidental drowning, which Patricia doesn’t believe.

“I was watching him come in, how could he be drowning?” According to her friends who were snorkeling with him, Ray was talking and also diving down under the water. At one point, he came up and said, “You gotta help me, I’m having trouble breathing,” and that’s when he decided to head back to shore. “I don’t think when people are drowning in a conditional manner, you’re going to be conversing,” she said.

What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

By a landslide, the leading cause of death for Hawaii tourists is drowning. And of ocean drownings for residents and visitors, the majority occur when snorkeling. While the ocean is powerful and unpredictable, some advocates, including the Johnsons, are trying to bring attention to a lesser-known medical condition that specifically poses risks to snorkelers and hasn’t gotten much attention over the years: Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (ROPE).

The Johnson family believes ROPE is the real cause of Ray’s death, and the lawsuit alleges that Hawaii travel entities have failed to educate the public on ROPE, resulting in “an important public health concern,” according to the complaint filed in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in the State of Hawaii in February 2024. The case should begin the fact-discovery process this week.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Fairmont Kea Lani declined to comment on the lawsuit.

“I would like to see warnings out there,” Patricia told USA TODAY. “I truly believe my husband would still be here if we’d been warned.”

How is snorkeling dangerous?

Breathing through a snorkel tube is similar to pinching your nose and breathing in through your mouth. The resistance is immediate. ROPE occurs when the negative pressure on the lungs ends up sucking bodily fluids out of the capillaries and into the airways, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta , a California-based pulmonologist.

“That snorkel resistance to airflow,” he said. “They want to breathe in but they have to breathe through that straw.”

Once fluid is in the lungs, it becomes difficult to breathe and people can experience hypoxia, or a lack of sufficient oxygen. “You slowly become weak then into a loss of consciousness,” Dasgupta said. Underlying health conditions such as heart and lung disease also increase someone’s predisposed risk for ROPE, he said.

If a person begins to feel shortness of breath, they may panic, causing more exertion, which can be life-threatening if they’re already suffering from a lack of oxygen, Dasgupta said.

Drowning by ROPE is “fundamentally different” than typical drowning when people are aspirating water or submerged and often showing signs of distress, the complaint said.

A lack of public awareness

In October 2017, after California woman – and avid swimmer and snorkeler – Nancy Peacock died while snorkeling in calm waters off the coast of Hawaii Island in a full-face mask and no signs of struggle, the Hawaii State Department created the Snorkeling Safety Sub-Committee to “address public concern about snorkel-related drownings.”

In a Snorkeling Safety Study led by the sub-committee, 50 different snorkels were tested, and the experts examined nonfatal and fatal drownings. The interim report released in July 2020 concluded that “ROPE-induced hypoxia is a factor in fatal and nonfatal snorkel drownings.” The study also had a survey conducted at Oahu’s most popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay, but only 36 participants – mostly locals – were interviewed due to the islands being closed to travel during the pandemic.

The high altitude from air travel impacting someone’s lungs may be a contributing factor, but there wasn’t enough evidence in the study to confirm this. Since getting to Hawaii requires at least a five-hour flight, it’s possible that fatigue and stress from flying could play a role in someone’s risk of drowning by ROPE.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority funded the study to “develop appropriate safety messages.” However, as of April 2024, there have not been any public-facing messages on any of the official Hawaii tourism websites. Information cards have been passed out to most Kauai and Oahu tour boat operators, the subcommittee said. Although the study is preliminary and not robust in terms of participants and even calls for further investigation, it is the only one to explore ROPE in snorkelers so far.

“Why aren’t we in Hawaii letting people know?” said Jay Stuemke, an Oahu-based attorney who filed the complaint on the Johnsons’ behalf. “Pamphlets in rooms, apps, websites, in-room videos, all types of mechanisms to warn people. It’s an easy enough thing to do. We believe had they done that, Ray would still be alive today as well as many other people.”

Snorkeling safety tips

◾ Always snorkel with a buddy, and if you can’t swim, don’t snorkel.

◾ Choose a snorkel with a wide opening and no constrictions in the mouthpiece.

◾ Learn to use the snorkel device before venturing out into water that’s too deep to stand in.

◾ If you feel shortness of breath, stay calm, remove the snorkel and get out of the water immediately, Dasgupta said.

Thank you for the honest post. I'm Canadian as well and feeling very sad to say with the dollar and other uncertainties we will have to travel elsewhere too. Already cancelled our 2025 visit.

However, we have a feeling this might be our last time on Maui if these prices continue, especially if STR limitations are put into place. There is no way I could afford to stay at Hotel and buy out every meal and every coffee. We do a condo and we’ve already decided that this trip we will be eating in most every single meal. Last trip we splurged on Mama’s Fish House, we usually will do several local restaurants as well. I just don’t think we will be able to afford it this time.

Some people on Tripadvisor will say hey stay home then if you can’t afford to eat out at the restaurants, and if you can’t afford the high prices. I disagree. If I can afford my accommodations and my airfare and my rental car , and I am completely happy grilling at the condo and eating lots of fresh poke from the local stores, then yes I am coming to enjoy the beautiful island of Maui and I know I will enjoy every minute.

Our one splurge will be a Gemini snorkel cruise because that’s one of our favorite things to do. We actually swapped out our condo for a much cheaper condo that is oceanfront. We are losing many amenities, but we are saving close to $1000 in accommodations. It was a no-brainer. And being oceanfront is a plus. So this trip will be very, very low-key for us.

Years ago, we used to travel to the BI, it might be time to swap back over there. I will be going to Maui in August with low expectations and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

This is just my honest opinion and I do appreciate the OP sharing a very honest report.

Thank you for your detailed and current, trip report.

May we ask which Cafe O’Lei you went to?

Agree prices are up and my take out Chinese Chicken salad from ABC, has gone from under $10 to a new price of $22. Hope the Canadian to U S exchange improves for our Canadian visitors.

Appreciate you sharing your personal experiences from your recent visit. We feel Lahaina was the heart of Maui .

What is ROPE, and did a tourist in Hawaii die from it after snorkeling?

According to the woman, her husband died from fluid in his lungs that was not caused by drowning, but by something called Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema.

A Michigan woman is suing a resort in Maui , the Hawaiian Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau after her husband died while he was snorkeling.

>> Read more trending news

Patricia Johnson said her husband, Ray, went snorkeling around Wailea Beach on Feb. 4, 2022, when he suddenly appeared to be in trouble.

Ray Johnson was snorkeling with friends, according to a story from USA Today , and Patricia Johnson had been hiking nearby when she noticed her friends trying to help her husband.

At first, she said, he had his head above water and was returning to the beach, but then the 64-year-old fell backward and had to be helped ashore.

Ray Johnson died soon after, according to ABC News .

According to the medical examiner, Johnson’s cause of death was accidental drowning. Johnson said she does not believe her husband drowned.

“I was watching him come in, how could he be drowning?” According to her friends, who were snorkeling with him, Ray was talking and also diving down under the water.

At one point, a friend who was with Ray Johnson said he came up out of the water and said, “You gotta help me, I’m having trouble breathing,” and that’s when he decided to head back to shore, according to Honolulu Civil Beat.

“I don’t think when people are drowning in a conditional manner, you’re going to be conversing,” Patricia Johnson said of her husband’s final actions.

What Patricia Johnson believed killed her husband was Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema.

Johnson is suing Hawaii travel entities and the Maui resort for having failed to educate the public on ROPE, resulting in “an important public health concern,” according to the complaint filed in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in the State of Hawaii in February 2024.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Fairmont Kea Lani declined to comment to USA Today on the lawsuit.

What causes ROPE?

According to the Mayo Clinic , pulmonary edema is a condition caused by too much fluid in the lungs. This fluid collects in the many air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

Fluid can collect in the lungs for many reasons, though heart issues are the most common.

Other causes include pneumonia, contact with certain toxins, medications, trauma to the chest wall, and traveling to or exercising at high elevations.

Snorkeling can cause the issue, as well. ROPE occurs when the negative pressure on the lungs ends up sucking bodily fluids out of the capillaries and into the airways, Dr. Raj Dasgupta , a California-based pulmonologist, told USA Today.

Drowning by ROPE is “fundamentally different” than typical drowning, when people are aspirating water or submerged and often showing signs of distress, according to the complaint Patricia Johnson filed.

“Patients or people who are out snorkeling will notice an increase in shortness of breath …, but then they’ll also become confused,” Dr. Meilan Han, chief of pulmonary & critical care medicine at the University of Michigan told ABC News.

Jay Stuemke, Johnson’s attorney, says the couple’s long flight and lack of knowledge about ROPE contributed to Ray Johnson’s death.

“What long haul flights do, is it has an effect on your lungs,” Stuemke said. “After 3 days you are back to normal, but if you snorkel after that long flight there is a substantial increased risk of death.”

Choosing a Dream Honeymoon Over a Lavish Wedding

With the cost of weddings on the rise, some couples are skipping big celebrations and prioritizing travel instead.

Two men wearing sunglasses are smiling, with blue waters and a row of colorful buildings in the background.

By Brianna Holt

In October 2023, Oscar Avilez Marquina and Luis Lopez, newlyweds from New York, flew to Europe to spend two weeks on a city-hopping tour between Nice, France; Paris; and Amsterdam. JetBlue had just launched direct flights to Paris from Kennedy International Airport, and the deal was too good for the couple to pass on.

“Going to Paris has always been a dream for me and for Luis as well,” said Mr. Avilez Marquina, 30, who is currently unemployed. “I’m so happy that the first time we got to visit, it was together because that’s going to become a core memory that we’re going to look back on for years to come.”

The decision to have a trans-Atlantic honeymoon is one the couple prioritized after eloping on Feb. 2, 2022, at the Durham Courthouse in Durham, N.C., with two friends as witnesses.

“We had talked about having a wedding and what that would look like,” Mr. Avilez Marquina said. “And after many discussions and sort of understanding the anxiety of having one, we decided to go to a courthouse and focus on what we really love to do, which is traveling and enjoying each other’s company.”

Ultimately, the cost of having a bigger wedding drove the couple away from the idea, with Mr. Lopez estimating a $60,000 budget for a larger party.

“That’s basically what my student loans cost,” said Mr. Lopez, 30, an accountant. “I had to ask myself, do I get married or do I pay my student loans? And is it worth spending that much money on something that’s only going to last a few hours?”

Instead, the couple combined their travel miles and spent a total of $2,000 on their honeymoon trip.

The average cost of a wedding in the United States last year was $35,000, according to the Knot . Also, the average student loan borrower in 2023 owed $37,338 in federal student loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative . With persistent inflation , paying for a lavish wedding celebration has become financially unattainable for some couples. However, many others have found that splurging on a dream honeymoon is more affordable and less stressful to plan than an extravagant wedding.

While thinking about a wedding to her college sweetheart, Haley Black, a full-time content creator, decided she didn’t want one. Her childhood fantasy was not a huge wedding. Instead, she dreamed of traveling and seeing other cultures.

So, in November 2022, Ms. Black, her husband, Mon’Darius Black, and their eight-person wedding party traveled from Shelby, N.C., to the Greek island of Santorini for a nine-day trip that included a small wedding ceremony with group activities followed by a honeymoon full of excursions and sightseeing.

“We didn’t want to spend a tremendous amount of money on a wedding. We looked at it like it was more about us rather than other people,” Ms. Black, 25, said. “Some people do see that as selfish, and while we had concerns about that, what mattered most is how we wanted to celebrate ourselves.”

When the couple first started considering wedding venues, the cheapest option they could find was $25,000. Flowers alone were $10,000. The total cost of their marriage and honeymoon trip was a little under $9,000. “We both have student loans, and we weren’t willing to go into more debt over a wedding to appease other people,” Ms. Black said.

Erika Hernandez, a wedding and elopement planner and the founder of the Greatest Adventure Wedding in Seattle, said that combining an elopement with a honeymoon was becoming increasingly popular because of its affordability.

“A lot of times, the couple just wants to include something that they really love doing together, like something they built their relationship off, and a lot of times that is traveling and adventuring together,” she said.

Couples choose honeymoons over weddings for more than just the savings. Many of Ms. Hernandez’s clients prioritize travel because they want to avoid the stress of preparing for a big event, are too busy with work and children, or prefer not to be the center of attention. “People rather spend the money on an experience for themselves than dinner for a whole bunch of people,” she added.

After Muna Yowell’s in-laws threw her and her now-husband, Dr. Jose J. Vargas Alvarado, an engagement party, the couple realized that they didn’t want a wedding.

Ms. Yowell, a 27-year-old data analyst, said the engagement party was largely about socializing with guests. On Oct. 7, the couple, who live in Dallas, married at a local courthouse and spent the evening with loved ones at a friend’s apartment.

Ms. Yowell, who is Palestinian, and her husband, who is Guatemalan, said they both did not feel right about holding a big celebration when the majority of her family lives in Palestine.

They spent only $100 on their courthouse ceremony, leaving room in the budget for a much larger honeymoon.

A week later, the couple flew to Hawaii for a week. “We went all out because we knew we could,” said Ms. Yowell, adding that the $5,000 trip involved renting a private sailboat, snorkeling, a helicopter tour across Maui and indulging in a fancy dinner every night of their stay.

“I’ve always heard that when it’s your wedding, you barely even get to eat the food that you paid thousands of dollars for,” Ms. Yowell said. “I didn’t want that. We wanted to be able to soak up the moment and really enjoy it with each other.”

Skipping the big wedding and going on a more budget-friendly getaway may have its drawbacks. Family members may be disappointed that they will miss the special day. However, Ms. Black decided that the advantages of saving money outweighed a few ruffled feathers.

“I don’t want to diminish the importance of family when it comes to celebrating big moments because I do love our families,” Ms. Black said, “but them witnessing us getting married is not worth us going into debt over a wedding.” The Blacks used the money they saved to close on a home in 2022 in Shelby, N.C.
