2. Redang Island

The upside is that a wide range of accommodations is available, from budget-friendly beach shacks to luxury seaside offerings with all the creature comforts. Because it is located within a protected marine park, numerous excellent diving and snorkelling spots are nearby. Redang Island is the largest of the nine islands that make up a government-protected marine sanctuary park. It’s also a popular nesting location for turtles, so you might swim with some of them while on Redang Island.

Scuba diving, snorkelling, and swimming are all popular activities on the island. Other activities available include boating, canoeing, and jungle trekking. Every dive site on the island has something unique to see and do. The islands are more expensive than the rest of Malaysia but are well worth it. They’re the ideal place to unwind, soak up the sun, and lounge away the days. 

6. Duyong Island

Duyong Island is located at the mouth of the Terengganu River in the Malaysian state of Terengganu. It was previously divided into Duyong Besar Island and the smaller Duyong Kecil Island, but sedimentation and reclamation have united it and significantly altered its coastline. Duyong Island is an idyllic Malay village with traditional daily scenes of local life, architecture, and boat-making workshops. 

Don’t miss the Duyong Art Fest in April, an annual art event showcasing the traditional anyaman or weaving craft and a marketplace on the jetty selling various Terengganu food and products. Duyong Island is an island in the Terengganu River that can be reached by road or boat. Unlike Redang or Perhentian, this island is not well known for its beaches or scuba diving but is well known for its traditional boat building.

7. Tenggol Island 

Tenggol Island is the third and final island linking Redang Island and Perhentian Island. This island was previously uninhabited, but hotels are now available for those who wish to stay there. You can then take the hotel ferry boat to the island. Tenggol is one of the most pristine islands off Malaysia’s east coast, with stunning rocky, forested cliffs, white-sand beaches, and some of Peninsular Malaysia’s best diving. 

Divers will appreciate the virgin coral formations, amazing marine life, and excellent visibility. Visit between August and October to glimpse the elusive whale shark. Not to worry, the shallow dives here are also ideal for first-time divers and snorkelers. This island offers you the chance to find amazing marine life in shipwrecks and house reefs, thanks to its more than 20 dive sites.

8. Bidong Island 

Bidong Island is best known for housing thousands of South Vietnamese refugees following the Vietnam War between 1978 and 1985. Although the camp for refugees has been abandoned since 1991, there are still signs of it on the island. For a fee, some local tour operators will gladly take you there. Bidong Island, dubbed Malaysia’s “Little Saigon,” is ideal for tourists and locals who enjoy a little history with their adventures. 

From the early 1970s to 1991, this island was inhabited by Vietnamese. Sign up for a guided tour to scuba dive in the island’s open waters, where there are many remnants of traps constructed by Vietnamese villagers in the form of abandoned wells when digging for fresh water. Aside from its mysterious history, it has exciting diving spots to find furniture, vehicles, and other items.

9. Rawa Island

Rawa Island has the same crystal clear waters as Redang Island but in a much quieter and more relaxing setting. It resembles the islands found in Europe, more specifically, the Mediterranean Sea. The island is a popular tourist day trip destination and turtle nesting site, but it is uninhabited, so you’ll be in heaven here. It is, without a doubt, one of Terengganu’s most beautiful spots. The island’s lack of development makes it ideal for a day trip as there isn’t much to do other than relax on the sand, in the water, or underwater, so prepare to be very relaxed. 

10. Gemia Island

Things to do in Terengganu

When Malaysians travel to Terengganu , we’d usually head straight to the acclaimed Redang Island and Perhentian Islands. It’s rare for most to stop by other parts of Terengganu for a vacay.

But little may we know that we’ve been missing out on other unbelievably gorgeous natural wonders that Terengganu has to offer. From an emerald-green river, to a bright blue lake, and an enchanting firefly park, here is a list of lesser-known attractions to hit up the next time you’re in Terengganu.

– Outdoor activities –

1. kenyir lake – take a dip with fish, island-hop, and see nature up close.

Kenyir Lake (Tasik Kenyir) is synonymous with Terengganu as it’s a major attraction in the state for both locals and tourists. Located in Hulu Terengganu, it’s an artificial lake covering a vast 38,000 hectares. The lake is surrounded by luscious rainforests and is home to a myriad of fishes.

There is an abundance of things to do on the lake and its many islands – a haven for outdoor and nature lovers alike. Avoid the north-east monsoon season around October to March every year when the lake is closed.

You can explore the Bewah Cave (Gua Bewah) and marvel at its incredible formations and limestone hills, while keeping a look out for common cave inhabitants such as bats, spiders, and frogs.

Or head over to Kelah Fish Sanctuary where visitors will be able to dip in the river together with kelah fishes. The fishes are aplenty, and they will swarm you if you feed them so you’ll get to feel their scales and gentle bites which have been described as “massaging.”

For a more relaxing activity, take a stroll through the Herbs Garden (Taman Herba) and Orchid Garden (Taman Orkid) on Sah Kecil Island. You’ll get to enjoy a leisurely walk while learning about the many herbs and spices native to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Orchid Garden is a conservatory for a huge variety of orchids, both rare and common ones, in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colours. The park with over 11,000 orchid plants can be found on Pulau Hilir Selimbar .

As a result of high rainfall and undisturbed catchment areas surrounding Kenyir Lake, you’ll find 14 waterfalls within the vicinity – each with different hiking trails.

One of the most accessible and popular ones is the Lasir Waterfall . You can have a relaxing picnic by the stream, swim in it, or try out waterfall abseiling if you’re into more adventurous activities.

How to get there: 

Board a boat to get to Kenyir Lake from Pengkalan Gawi jetty. You can also island-hop for a day via speedboat from here from RM60.

Alternatively, Pengkalan Gawi jetty is an approximate 4 and a half hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur and an hour away from Kuala Terengganu, the capital city of Terengganu.

2. Bukit Singa – hike to a clifftop view

Bukit Singa is located in Pulau Kapas, a small but beautiful island off the coast of Terengganu. Pulau Kapas has breathtaking beaches and crystal clear waters, but 95% of the island is actually covered in hills and forests, so it’s ideal for not just beachgoers, but hikers too.

Bukit Singa is one of the more popular hiking trails here as the view from the top is second to none. The elevation isn’t very high and the journey will only take around an hour, but the cliff trails are rocky and slippery, so it’s highly recommended to trek with proper hiking shoes.

How to get to Pulau Kapas:

Hop on a 20-minute boat ride from Marang Jetty for around RM30.

Alternatively, Marang Jetty is 30 minutes away by car from Kuala Terengganu.

3. Sungai Bangan – a popular pit stop on a challenging hiking trail

Sungai Bangan is a pit stop for hikers who are conquering the Chemerong-Berembun-Langsir trail . This three-day hike starts from Hutan Lipur Chemerong in Hulu Dungun, around 2 hours from Kuala Terengganu.

It’s not an easy feat as it’ll require you to camp two nights, but the rewarding views of 370m-high Chemerong Waterfall, from the peak of 2,077m-high Mount Berembun, and of 801m-high Lansir Waterfall are worth it.

Sungai Bangan’s waters are emerald in colour and unbelievably clear – a true natural wonder that hasn’t been discovered by many because of the challenging hike. The water runs deep – around 2.5m – so do practice caution when swimming.

Avoid monsoon season by visiting between March and October when the ground is dry for easier hiking.

4. Bukit Keluang – sunrise and sunset views

Bukit Keluang offers some of the best coastline scenery in Terengganu. In fact, you can catch both the sunrise and sunset from the peak.

It’s an easy hike perfect for beginners, as it will only take 20 to 30 minutes at most. Plus, the trail consists of mostly steps, so no special hiking boots are necessary.

Bukit Keluang is around 2 hours away from Kuala Terengganu.

5. Lata Kolam Air Deru Ecopark – riverside BBQ spot

Lata Kolam Air Deru Ecopark is a humble homestay near a river that offers a bunch of add-on outdoor activities from archery, ATV riding, white water rafting, and more.

The place is ideal for groups of friends as they have capsules and cabins that can fit up to 6 guests (from RM80 per night). Bathrooms are shared and bedrooms are homestyle rather than fancy, so treat this as more of a campsite than hotel.

They also have barbecue pits free for guests to use, so you should bring your own ingredients to have a fun time roasting and feasting with your friends at night.

6. Tasik Puteri – park with a waterfall

Tasik Puteri Park (Taman Rekreasi Tasik Puteri) is a public recreational park featuring the man-made Bukit Besi waterfall with enchanting blue waters. Tucked away from public view, the waterfall is an easy 10-minute trek from the entrance of the park.

Daredevils can also sign up for ATV riding operated by CEA ATV Outdoor . With rides priced at around RM180 per person, they’ll bring you through rough roads, streams, and bridges without railings, so it’s definitely not for the easily scared.

For newbies to the water, the tamer banana boat rides at RM10 per rider are recommended on a clear day.

Tasik Puteri is an hour and a half away from Kuala Terengganu.

7. Kemaman Blue Lake – views of a former gold mine

The Kemaman Blue Lake is also known as Pepsi Blue Lake, because as its name suggests, the colour of the lake resembles the blue hues of a Pepsi can.

These are a result of chemicals in the water linked to the lake’s past as a gold mine.

Of course, this means you should not swim in it, but the lake’s picturesque landscape and bright blue waters make it a highly Instagrammable place. So just keep a safe distance when you’re posing for the ‘gram.

8. Boardwalk Setiu – see swamp wildlife up close

Boardwalk Setiu is a part of Setiu’s wetlands – a freshwater swamp conservatory that’s rich in flora and fauna, and that serves as a mangrove replanting site too.

Unlike most swamps that require you to hop on a boat to tour around, you can just go on a leisurely stroll in Boardwalk Setiu. The platform will bring you on a 500m-long journey through various greens with informative signs for you to learn more about the freshwater ecosystem.

Those with sharp eyes can also try to spot crustaceans, lizards, butterflies, and birds in the vicinity.

Boardwalk Setiu is an hour and a half away from Kuala Terengganu.

9. Sungai Yak Yah Firefly Sanctuary – pitch blackness with magical night lights

Sungai Yak Yah is said to have the most fireflies in their sanctuary as compared to other firefly parks in Malaysia due to the lack of pollution in the area.

You can expect to embark on a beguiling 30 to 45-minute boat ride in total darkness as you float silently through the river in search of fireflies. Then, watch them light up the shrubs and trees surrounding you as they flicker and fly around in hundreds.

The best season to catch the highest amount of fireflies is from May to July. And do go between 7.30PM-9PM as that is when they are most active.

10. crystal mosque – unique glittering mosque.

Dubbed as one of the most unique mosques in the country, the Crystal Mosque (Masjid Kristal) is an iconic mosque in Kuala Terengganu that’s made entirely of steel, glass, and crystal on the outside.

Located in the Islamic Civilisation Park introduced below, its sleek and modern architecture distinguishes the Crystal Mosque from typical mosques’ designs. Before its renovations are estimated to be completed in April 2022, you can view it from the outside and tour its grounds.

11. Ulul Albab Mosque – made of wood, in traditional architectural style

Also another unique-looking mosque, the Ulul Albab Mosque (Masjid Ulul Albab Seberang Jerteh) has sharp pyramid roofs as opposed to the conventional dome-shaped roofs that can be seen on most mosques.

Ulul Albab Mosque is 2 hours away from Kuala Terengganu.

12. Lapan Kubah Mosque – Russian-style mosque

Terengganu seems to be the home of unusual mosques as they have another one on their list – the Lapan Kubah Mosque (Masjid Lapan Kubah).

Unofficially known as the Russian Mosque and for good reason, the Lapan Kubah Mosque looks like St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow with its eye-catching, colourful domes.

Located in Kampung Lapan Kotak, the mosque has drawn locals and tourists alike to score a photo with the mosque and its surrounding picturesque rice paddies. For yet more photo angles, go up to the roof platform.

It will take you around an hour and a half to get to the mosque from Kuala Terengganu.

13. Floating Mosque – a visual treat at high tide

Also known as Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque (Masjid Terapung Kuala Ibai), Terengganu’s floating mosque is built in Kuala Ibai Lagoon near the sea with architecture inspired by both Malay and Moorish design.

During high tide, the water level will rise and completely cover the stilts which gives the illusion that the mosque is floating on water. Visit when high tide coincides with either sunrise or sunset for the best shots. The all-white facade complete with its idyllic surroundings makes the Floating Mosque a postcard-worthy place indeed.

14. Istana Maziah – home to royalty

Istana Maziah is located at the foot of Bukit Puteri so it’s easy to stop by for a photo op after coming down.

As it’s the official residence of the Sultan of Terengganu, you’re obviously not allowed to enter, but the French-influenced architecture makes the place one of Kuala Terengganu’s landmarks. You can get as close as the front gates to take a photo though.

An interesting fact of the palace built in 1897 is that it has a mixture of salt, egg white, and honey applied on the exterior to protect the walls from pollutants.

15. islamic civilisation park – see mini-versions of religious architectural wonders.

Islamic Civilisation Park (Taman Tamadun Islam) is a miniature park showcasing various replicas of famous mosques, monuments, tombs, and other Islamic arts and architecture from around the world.

Visitors will also get to learn a detailed history of Islam and how the Islamic civilisation was spread around the world. Plan half a day to explore the place’s 28 replicas and other activity areas.

Other attractions and activities in the park include a working water wheel, a 3D cinema screening a virtual haj reel, and a lake with paddle boats.

16. Chinatown (Kampung Cina) – heritage food and shophouses

Kuala Terengganu’s Chinatown (Kampung Cina) is a small, but rustic and quaint street lined with colourful shophouses. You will find a couple of old-school grocery stores, kopitiams , butcher shops, and restaurants here. Heritage murals offer plenty of snapshot opps too.

If you’re looking for a place to stay the night, affordable, modest guesthouses and hostels dot the area.

Town City Food Court is recommended if you’re stopping by for a meal as there is a wide array of food kiosks serving seafood, noodles, snacks, and more.

17. Pasar Payang Central Market – shop with the locals

Pasar Payang Central Market is one of the most popular tourist hubs in Kuala Terengganu. Located by the Terengganu River, right next to Chinatown, it offers a myriad of traditional handicrafts, fresh produce, souvenirs, cooking wares and utensils, clothes, and local delicacies there.

Head there from 6AM-9AM when the market will be abuzz with activity. You’ll get to watch the locals do their marketing, traders deliver goods, and the sellers and buyers interact among one another.

18. Terengganu State Museum – affordable entry to view treasured artefacts

View century-old artefacts, royal regalia, contemporary artworks, and the like at Terengganu State Museum (Muzium Negeri Terengganu), the largest museum in Malaysia.

There are 9 galleries for you to explore at your own pace to learn more about the royal family of Terengganu, the history of Islam in the Malay Peninsula, pre-historic evolution, the making of traditional weapons such as the ceremonial keris , and many more.

It also has a novel element as the buildings are designed after Terengganu’s ancient palaces with their concrete stilts and pointed roofs.

19. Pantai Batu Buruk – a laid-back family-friendly beach

Pantai Batu Buruk is a 3km-long public beach where the locals regularly flock to with their friends and family to relax and enjoy the sea breeze.

It’s usually quite packed in the evening as you’ll come across a crowd of people picnicking by the shores and a bunch of peddlers selling food and toys.

You can buy a kite from the peddlers and try your hand at kite-flying, or go for horse riding and carriage rides for a romantic beachside saunter if you’re with your bae.

There’s also a pasar malam that operates every Friday from 3PM-7PM, so do drop by for some snacks, knick-knacks, and souvenirs.

20. Teck Soon Heritage House – connected to a colonial-era kongsi

Teck Soon Heritage House is a museum showcasing the history of the Chinese Peranakan culture in Terengganu, and despite its recent RM500,000 state-funded renovation, has yet to become a major tourist haunt.

Located in Chinatown, the exterior is painted in shades of blue and the design resembles a pre-war shophouse with its shutter windows and arches.

The museum is not big as it’s only made up of 2 double-storey shophouses combined together, but entry is free and you’ll get to pick up some interesting info about the local Chinese Peranakan community, view heritage items such as original fittings, traditional kebaya , and handwoven items.

Fun fact: the house is linked to the Teck Soon Kongsi, a Chinese community organization, that once issued its own token. Such tokens issued by kongsis of the colonial era were legal tender in the areas under their control. These are now prized auction items.

21. Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Temple – an annual must-visit for devotees

Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Templ e is believed to have been built in the year 1801, which makes it the oldest Chinese temple in Terengganu.

Dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea and worshipped by many early Chinese immigrants to Southeast Asia, this used to be the main place of worship for the Hokkien community. Today, it has pivoted into a tourist attraction as well, but devotees still do come yearly to give their thanks.

The temple is not overly grand, but it maintains its ancient structure and design, which makes it an authentic sight. Pop by the waterfront Tien Hou Kong temple circa 1896 nearby too while in the area.

22. Noor Arfa Craft Complex – buy handmade batik

With almost 40 years of history, Noor Arfa Craft Complex is the largest batik producer in the country.

Apart from viewing manufacturing activities in their complex, visitors can check out their batik painting demonstration, visit the craft school to learn about traditional crafts, and then head on over to the largest batik showroom in Malaysia to admire the delicate artwork of batik art on a wide range of products.

There will be staff and guides stationed around the complex to help you navigate and explain the process to you.

23. Kota Lama Duyung – tiny, well-kept heritage museum

Also known as the Kota Lama Fort, the Kota Lama Duyung house was built by Dato’ Biji Sura’ in the 1920s to pay homage to traditional Malay and Islamic architecture. Today, it has since been restored.

It currently functions as a small heritage museum displaying local artefacts. Entrance is free, so do stop by if you have some time to kill to check out miniature boat models, batik artwork, and more.

24. Pusat Sains & Kreativiti Terengganu – fun science education for kids

Families with children should definitely include the Pusat Sains & Kreativiti Terengganu into their itineraries as it’s a wholesome edutainment centre where kids can pick up some knowledge and score a fun playtime together.

This science centre comprises 9 galleries covering areas of technology, maths, engineering, biology, physics and more.

Kids will also get to learn about the concept of recycling and make their own artwork out of recycled materials.

Don’t forget to check out the Funovation Gallery – an inviting space filled with musical instruments, games, and art materials for the young ones to get creative and do as they wish.

25. Kampung Losong – famous for keropok lekor fish crackers

You can’t say you’ve been to Terengganu if you haven’t tried their famous keropok lekor .

Keropok lekor needs no introduction in Malaysia. A traditional Malay fish cracker, it’s a nationwide snack loved by all. Keropok lekor originated from Terengganu which is why you absolutely have to give it a try there.

A famous spot to check out to get your fix would be at Kampung Losong . Located near the Islamic Civilisation Park, Kampung Losong has a number of stalls dedicated to making and selling keropok lekor only.

In fact, the place is officially recognised as the Keropok Lekor Business Centre by the state government!

26. Kuala Terengganu Waterfront – for evening walks

More commonly known as the KT Waterfront, the Kuala Terengganu Waterfront is a community space where locals gather to take a calming walk, fish, or watch the sun go down by the Terengganu River. There are some days where buskers will perform, which definitely adds to the chill mood.

There are also several eateries dotted along the area, so it’s easy to grab a bite before or after your stroll.

27. Bukit Puteri – colonial installations and a sea view

The peak of Bukit Puteri gives you an aerial view of the city of Kuala Terengganu, the Terengganu River, and the South China Sea.

Built in the 16th century, Bukit Puteri used to be a historical defence fort. A lot of its olden-day equipment and structures still stand today.

You will find a large brass bell that was only struck to announce an emergency or important festivals and royal events back in colonial days, a number of cannons, a lighthouse, and a cemetery nearby.

The east coast of Malaysia is great to explore. However, with all the beautiful tropical islands, it can be easy to forget that there is far more to explore here. Like Kuala Terengganu!  There are plenty of things to do in Terengganu, so it’s well worth a visit if you can spare the time.

Kuala Terengganu is a city with over 250,000 people located towards the northern end of the east coast and close to the popular island of Redang . Many people that come through here just to go straight to Redang, which is a shame! There are many places to visit in Terengganu, making it worth a stopover even if you can only spend a night.

Kuala Terengganu is in a pretty spot centred on a promontory on the South China Sea. It was a fishing village before oil was found here. Now rapid development has lead to a great waterfront area. You’ll also find one of the best Chinatowns in Malaysia. This is also the best place in Terengganu for yummy food!  The area is picturesque, with kampong-style stilt houses.

And that’s not even mentioning the best aspect of this city – its friendly people. It’s the friendliest place I have been to in Malaysia and that’s saying a lot.

If you are exploring the east coast of Malaysia, definitely add Kuala Terengganu to your list as there are plenty of interesting places in Terengganu to visit.

Top 19 Best Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia [2023]

Below are our suggestions for what to do in Kuala Terengganu. Note that the state of Terengganu has weekends on a Friday and Saturday. Opening hours to many of the interesting places to visit in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia are limited or closed on Fridays. So if you only have one day in this city, try to make it a different day.

It’s also worth noting that when we visited, many attractions we planned to visit were actually closed down so be weary about reading older publications, like Lonely Planet. Everything below was definitely available when we updated this article. Be wary of anything published earlier.

Visit The Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

When it comes to what to do in Terengganu, I recommend starting with a visit to the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque.  This stunning mosque, known as the Floating Mosque, is on an artificial island surrounded by water about 4.5 kilometres south east of the centre of Kuala Terengganu.

The mosque is pretty at any time of day, but it’s particularly beautiful at sunset when the traditional white, Moorish design looks spectacular against the setting sun.  Definitely, a top place to visit in Terengganu.

Explore Taman Tamadun Islam And The Crystal Mosque

When you visit Kuala Terengganu, definitely take a look at Taman Tamadu Islam – the world’s first Islamic civilisation park. There are two parts to it.

Zone A is the first part. It is free. Here you can visit the Crystal Mosque pictured above. Made out of steel and glass, it is quite unique. It is named after the huge crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall.

Zone B has an entry fee and is home to a series of miniature models of famous Islamic buildings from around the world such as Mecca’s Haram Mosque and India’s Taj Mahal. They are built to a scale between 1:17 and 1:22. There are also river cruises.

The mosque is located about 2.5 kilometres from central Kuala Terengganu and there are bus and taxi options.  This is one attraction that should be on your list of Terengganu places to visit.

Explore Chinatown

After the serenity of the mosques, the next best place to visit in Kuala Terengganu is bustling Chinatown. This compact area is centred on Jalan Kampung Cina and is home to heritage buildings, temples and alleys with street art.  It’s charming and makes for a lovely walk.

It’s a fun place for a quick stroll and, below, you will find some Kuala Terengganu things to do while you are there.

Find Some Street Art

More and more cities in Malaysia seem to be adding some fabulous street art to their alleys and streets and, thankfully, Kuala Terengganu has too!

The best place in Kuala Terengganu to see street art is in Chinatown.  While you’re there check out every alley you see and you’ll find many will have street art. When I tried to find examples I had looked up beforehand, they just weren’t where they were publicised. It’s much easier (and more fun) to just look out for it as you go.

Visit Ho Ann Kiong Temple

Also located in Chinatown, the attractive Ho Ann Kiong Temple is another Terengganu place to visit as you wander around.

This red and gold temple dates back to 1796, although it was rebuilt in both 1801 and 2010 after a fire. It’s smaller than I expected. Make sure you check out the stone carvings inside and outside the temple.

And when you are finished, walk around the back. There is a cool “wishing tree”.

Learn Chinese Peranakan History At Teck Soon Heritage House

In a previous life, this Chinatown shophouse was owned by the Teck Soon Trading Company. Now, it is a much more interesting place in Terengganu as it is a history museum focused on Chinese Peranakan culture in this city. Painted beautifully in three shades of blue, even if you don’t want to enter, it’s worth checking out the outside.

Entry is free. However, it is unclear what the opening hours of the museum are now. Still, wander past when you are exploring Kuala Terengganu as it looks great.

Shop At The Central Market

Another one of the things to do Kuala Terengganu offers is the Central Market. This is the place to go for a lively atmosphere, to sample local food and buy fruit.

There’s also a wide range of batik and locally weaved fabric here. Many stalls are shut on Fridays.

Visit The Zainal Abidin Mosque

For a mosque closer to the city centre, the Zainal Abidin Mosque is a Kuala Terengganu tourist attraction just a short walk from Chinatown. It’s pretty inside with 9 domes letting light in and pretty latticed windows.

Non-Muslims can enter if dressed appropriately.

Check Out Istana Maziah

Near the Central Market on the side of a hill is the Sultan’s Palace.

You can’t go inside to visit, but it’s still one of the Kuala Terengganu places to visit – you can check out the outside as you walk past on Jalan Masjid Abidin.

Visit Bukit Puteri

Another one of the places to go in Terengganu which is located by the Central Market and Istana Maziah is Bukit Puteri. Here, there are a few Kuala Terengganu activities including a 200 metre hill you can walk up to get great views of Kuala Terengganu, the Sungai Terengganu river mouth and out to the South China Sea.

There are also historical remains here from when the sultan used this area during the civil war as a fort. There are still cannons, a flagpole, large bell and remains of defence walls. You can also find a lighthouse at the top of the hill.

Entry costs RM1. It was closed at the time of publishing so we couldn’t check it out.

Walk Along The Waterfront Area

For your Kuala Terengganu sightseeing list be sure to add the area by the river near Chinatown. There are pretty bridges and walkways and even a huge “I <3 KT” sign.

It’s a nice place to walk in the evening, and there are some food stalls to fill your belly as well.

Explore Pulau Duyung

Pulau Duyung is an island in the estuary close to the centre of Kuala Terengganu. It’s quite different from the other options of what to see in Kuala Terengganu as it feels like you go back in time if you walk around the older areas.

It is just a short taxi, bus or ferry (from behind Central Market but just once a day) from the centre and, unfortunately, modern housing estates are starting to take over the island. However, there are still old wooden houses and it can feel like you are in a smaller village.

You can walk around and soak up the island as well as visit old boat-building yards where boats are often built using old tools and techniques. Pulau Duyung is certainly another one of the interesting places in Kuala Terengganu to visit.

Learn History At The Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu (Terengganu State Museum)

This is a top tourist attraction in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia if you want to learn more about the history of the area and to see traditional houses. It’s actually the largest museum in Malaysia with 4 interconnected buildings built on stilts and based on ancient Terengganu palace designs!

The highlight is definitely the buildings themselves and other traditional buildings that are here.

Inside, you will find information on natural history including rocks, minerals, flora and fauna found in the state, local textiles, traditional handicrafts, the Terengganu royal family, petroleum, the arrival of Islam into the Terengganu area and the history of human development in Terengganu. There are also old cars, boats and planes to check out. It’s a lot!

The only shame is that it could be better maintained and put in some type of order so you can get as much as possible from a visit. Still, it’s definitely one of the Kuala Terengganu tourist attractions worth visiting, even just for the buildings alone.

This tourist attraction in Terengganu is located about 6 kilometres from the city, so you need to bus or take a Grab taxi. Foreigner entry is currently RM15 for adults or RM10 for kids. It’s a fair bit cheaper for Malaysians.

Eat Everything At Town City Food Court

The best place to visit in Terengganu when you start to get hungry is Town City Food Court.  Located on the edge of Chinatown, it’s the perfect place to kick back for lunch or dinner. There are some good Chinese food options. There is also a relatively good selection of cold beer and fans to keep things cool.

When I first entered, I was overwhelmed by some menus being only in Chinese, but people speak at least some English so don’t let that stop you!

Taste The Great Coffee At Star Anise

One of the top 10 things to do in Kuala Terengganu is to pop into Kuala Terengganu’s best coffee joint!

Open from midday to midnight in Chinatown, this is the perfect place to grab a sweet coffee or to take a break between sightseeing for some pie or cheesecake.

Relax at Batu Buruk (Beach)

Looking for some beach time with your Kuala Terengganu main attractions? Then head to Batu Buruk.

Located a short drive away, this is where you will find a long sandy beach with nice water although it’s a better place to picnic than swim. There are also cultural performances sometimes and swings right on the beach!

It is popular with locals, particularly on weekends, so weekdays can be a better time to visit with the absolute best time to visit being on Friday nights when there is a delicious night market.

While Batu Buruk is not the best place at Terengganu if you’re looking for a swim, it’s still well worth a visit to hang out with the locals.

Take A Cruise

A great way to explore Kuala Terengganu is from the water, especially if you are short on time.

On this two hour cruise , you can see many of the things to do in Kuala Terengganu from a different angle and take some great photos.

This cruise visits the Crystal Mosque, Duyong Island, Sekati Island, the big drawbridge and more. It departs throughout the day so you can choose your perfect time slot.

Visit Redang Island

Redang Island is the place to go for gorgeous beaches and great snorkelling and diving. Visiting here is a great to intersperse the city attractions of Kuala Terengganu with some amazing natural attractions. It’s one of the prettiest places I have been in Malaysia.

Visit A Fisherman’s Village In Seberang Takir

Found just off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, Seberang Takir is a fisherman’s village which is the best places in Terengganu for visitors to get a glimpse of authentic local culture in the area. 

Hire a local boat and driver to take you to the village, as you immerse yourself and observe the everyday lives of locals in the village. Visitors here are always welcome.

Just make sure that you’re respectful with the locals because Seberang Takir is a real working village.

Kuala Terengganu Itinerary

The downtown area is home to many of the attractions and activities in Terengganu which are mentioned above.  They are all just a short walk from each other.

Below, I have listed a short circuit you could do on foot to visit all the Terengganu interesting places. You only need a couple of hours to do this.

Visit the Terengganu points of interest in this order to save your legs and see a lot in a short time:

• Istana Maziah
• Zainal Abidin Mosque
• Bukit Puteri
• Central Market
• Walk through Chinatown, looking for street art and while visiting the following attractions.
• Ho Ann Kiong Temple
• Town City Food Court
• Waterfront area

Top it off with this river cruise, and you can see a lot of Kuala Terengganu in half a day.

Best Hotels In Kuala Terengganu

A plus about visiting Kuala Terengganu is that there is a range of accommodation and it is all good value.

I recommend staying somewhere central where you can walk to most tourist attractions in Terengganu mentioned above. Make sure you are close to Chinatown and that will tick this box.

MIDRANGE – Grand Puteri Hotel Review

The Grand Puteri Hotel is my top choice because it is so centrally located, has great facilities and is incredibly good value.

You can easily walk to most Kuala Terengganu attractions listed above from here and then cool down in the pool when you are done. There is also a restaurant and a business centre.

There are a few different room types. We stayed in the cheapest, which is fine – although you do somewhat get what you pay for. There are suites if you want a treat! I was very happy with the price we paid.

BUDGET – Arena Boutique Hotel Review

For a great priced option, consider the clean, tidy and comfortable Arena Boutique Hotel on the edge of Chinatown. It’s only a budget hotel in terms of price, not what is offered.

There is a great range of room types of solo travellers, couples and families with bedding for up to five. Rooms come with free wifi, tea and coffee making facilities, flatscreen TV and comfortable bedding. There is also an executive suite with its own living area.

On-site, you can also find a fitness centre and a restaurant.

Getting To Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu is easy to reach from anywhere in Malaysia. There is an airport where you can fly direct from Kuala Lumpur or you can catch buses from many points.

At the time of writing this, direct buses from Singapore to Kuala Terengganu were not running. Your best bet is to get a bus to Johor Bahru and then catch a direct one from there.

Getting Around Kuala Terengganu

Most things to do in Kuala Terengganu are close together so it’s easy to walk between many of the attractions here.

For others, there is a good bus system in Kuala Terengganu which should get you to most places of interest in Kuala Terengganu listed above. However, if you have limited time, it’s much easier to use taxis and they are affordable as well.

Use the Grab app (easy to install and get started if you don’t already have it) to get taxis. This works like Uber (in fact, Grab bought Uber in Malaysia) and makes life very easy.

Kuala Terengganu With Kids

I visited Kuala Terengganu with my kids and found it a very easy place to be. Most places to visit Kuala Terengganu are short and sweet which is excellent for kids with short attention spans!

They also particularly loved the Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu thanks to all the buildings, cars, planes and boats.

The night market at Batu Buruk is also a winner, particularly if you’re after a Kuala Terengganu night activity.

There is also a playground out the back of the Town City Food Court perfect for a play while you get something to eat. The riverfront area is also good to get rid of some energy. There is another great playground near Shahbandar Jetty.

Final Words

It can be easy to skip over Kuala Terengganu on your way elsewhere but don’t! A visit here is an easy way to see a different slice of Malaysia with some low key attractions and great food.

Even if you can only spare a night on your way to Redang Island, it’s worth it! Especially as many of the Kuala Terengganu activities are a short walk from each other meaning you can explore a lot in even just a morning or evening. This city is great for walking around in and people are very friendly and helpful.

25 Best Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu (Malaysia)

Kuala Terengganu is the capital of the great state of Terengganu in Malaysia . The state lies along the coast of the South China Sea and stretches for almost 13,000 square kilometers. Located inside the state of Terengganu you will find beautiful little villages and towns, as well as idyllic islands and of course the star attraction which is the capital of Kuala Terengganu itself.

One of the great draws about a visit to Kuala Terengganu is that is offers such diversity. As well as strips of sandy beach, you will also find a mix of Chinese and Malay culture here thanks to the sizeable local Chinese community. As part of a trip here you can walk around the town and visit pretty heritage buildings and museums, or you spend time mussel picking and squid fishing.

Whatever you choose to do, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to the food, which mixes Peranakan cuisine with typical Malay dishes and plenty of fresh seafood.

1. Relax on Pantai Batu Buruk

If you want to find some sand in Kuala Terengganu then head for Pantai Batu Buruk which is one of the most popular beaches in the city.

Here you will find a long strip of sand and you can take in the pretty scenery across the water.

The beach is crowded at the weekends as local families descend so you may want to give it a miss at this time.

It is also conveniently located across from the Cultural Centre Stage where you can watch a cultural show so you may want to check out the schedule at the same time.

2. Walk through Chinatown

Kuala Terengganu is blessed with a large Chinese population and with that in mind you can visit the pretty area of Chinatown when you are in the city.

This part of Kuala Terengganu would have been founded at the end of the 19th century and is known as Kampung Cina in Malay.

Here you will find many traditional shops and houses that are built in the Chinese style and you can wander around the winding streets here and enjoy the sights.

This part of town is also a heritage sport according to the World Monument Watch Program of UNESCO.

3. Visit Teck Soon Heritage House

You will recognize the Teck Soon Heritage House before you see it as it is painted in three different hues of blue.

The house stands in the heritage area of Chinatown and would have been part of the famous Teck Soon Trading Company in the days of old.

Now it has been transformed into a museum which will tell you all the history of the Chinese culture in Kuala Terengganu which is called Peranakan or Straits Chinese culture.

4. Climb Bukit Puteri

Close to the Central Market in Kuala Terengganu you will find a flight of stairs which mark the beginning of Bukit Puteri.

The climb to the top is around 200 meters and once you get to the summit you can enjoy beautiful views over the city which make the climb worth it.

At the summit of the hill you will also find the crumbling ruins of a fort that would have dated from the 19th century.

There is not much left of the fort now except for some ceremonial bells and cannons.

5. Visit the Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Temple

Located in Kampung China, which is the Chinatown area of Kuala Terengganu, is the Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Temple which is one of the most visited spots in the city.

The Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Temple is the primary place of worship for the Buddhist community here and is a riot of color.

Make sure to check out the ornate courtyard which is filled with aromatic incense smoke as well as the colorful interior.

The varied colors are said to represent the diversity in Kuala Terengganu.

6. Travel to Pulau Duyung

If you fancy a trip out of the center of Kuala Terengganu then you can head to Pulau Duyung which is the largest island in the estuary across from the city.

The island is famous for its fishing boat building businesses and you can come here and see how the boats have been built much in the same style and using the same tools for centuries.

Getting to the island is part of the fun as you get to take a local ferry across and take in the cool breeze and views from the vantage point of the water.

7. Discover Masjid Terapung

Masjid Terapung means ‘Floating Mosque’ in Malay and sits around 10 kilometers away from the center of Kuala Terengganu.

The mosque is an ode to classic Islamic architecture and is painted a brilliant white.

It stands above a magnificent manmade lake which uses water from the nearby Ibai River and it is especially beautiful around sunset.

Locals and visitors alike flock here to take pictures of the gleaming white structure reflected in the limpid waters of the lake and you can visit the mosque outside of prayer times as long as you are dressed modestly.

8. Explore Istana Maziah

One of the prettiest buildings in Kuala Terengganu is the Istana Maziah which means the Maziah Palace.

This is former palace of the sultan and it stands near the central market and was constructed in the traditional colonial style.

Unfortunately the palace is closed to the public expect for certain public holidays when you can visit but it still makes a great spot to stop by, especially if you have an interest in traditional architecture.

9. Eat at Chinatown Hawker Center

If you want to enjoy an eclectic meal in Kuala Terengganu then head for the Chinatown Hawker Center.

Here you will find a large outdoor food center which has a range of food stands that include traditional Chinese and Malay dishes so that there is something for everything to eat.

This is conveniently located close to the Ho Ann Kiong Temple so you can easily combine a trip to both at the same time and if you come here in the morning you will find a craft market.

In the evening you can choose from a huge number of delicious dishes such as fried noodles, soups, and grilled fish.

10. Browse at the Central Market

If you want to get a look at some of the lush local produce in Terengganu then head to the Central Market which is filled with exotic ingredients.

The market has several floors and the ground floor is dedicated to fish, meat, vegetables and fruit.

The upper floor is made up of local products such as hand woven textiles known as kain songket as well as batik pieces.

This is the local market and is known as Pasar Payang and it is a good place to come to pick up some souvenirs cheaply.

11. Visit Zainal Abidin Mosque

Zainal Abidin Mosque is the central mosque in Kuala Terengganu and has pride of place in the city.

The mosque is easily recognizable as it is topped with nine gleaming domes and it is also covered with ornate latticed windows.

This means that if you are inside you can watch how the light is patterned across the floors and non-Muslims can visit provided that you dress modestly.

12. Shop at Wanisma Craft and Trading

Anyone who wants to pick up some gifts or souvenirs in Kuala Terengganu should head to Wanisma Craft and Trading.

Here you will find items such as traditional printed batik and brass ware and you will even be able to check out the crafts men and women as they work.

As such this is a great way to support the local community and also stock up on local handicrafts at the same time.

13. Take a trip to Pulau Redang

If you want to get out of Kuala Terengganu proper then head to Redang Island or Pulau Redang as it is known in Malay.

The island is part of the wider Redang Island Marine Park and this part of Malaysia is known for having a range of underwater delights.

These include some 500 different kinds of coral and over 3,000 species of fish.

You will also find over a thousand kinds of bivalves here and as you would expect, snorkeling and diving are popular pastimes here.

This makes a great day trip outside of Kuala Terengganu or you can stay overnight here the serenity of the island.

14. Browse at Pantai Batu Buruk Night Market

If you want to enjoy a slice of traditional local life in Kuala Terengganu then head to Pantai Batu Buruk Night Market which sets up around dusk next to the main beach in the city every Friday.

Here you will find a range of street food carts which sell delicious locals snacks such as meat skewers which are cooked over charcoal.

You will also find some other items for sale such as children’s toys and clothes and this is an ideal spot if you want to see how the locals hang out in Kuala Terengganu at the weekend.

15. Shop for souvenirs at Kraftangan Malaysia

Located around 4 kilometers to the south of Kuala Terengganu is Kraftangan Malaysia which sells high end handicrafts.

If you are looking for some traditional textiles such as hand woven kain songket this is the place to find them and there is a Songket Heritage Exhibition here.

This will explain to you a little bit about the history of kain songket and this makes a good choice if you want to buy crafts or souvenirs in the city.

16. Fish for squid

Perhaps one of the more unexpected activities that you can enjoy in Kuala Terengganu is the chance to ‘jig’ for squid.

If you go down to the local beaches in the evenings, you will find locals and fishermen fishing for the plethora of squid that swim in the waters here.

This involves using a traditional technique to pluck the squid from the sea and this is one of the highlights of a trip to the beach here.

You can also enjoy the glowing sunsets and vistas across the water at the same time.

17. Dine at Madame Bee’s Kitchen

If you are looking for some delicious food served in a beautiful heritage building then Madame Bee’s Kitchen is the place to find it.

The building is located in the center of Chinatown and serves up amazing Peranakan dishes which are also known as Straits Chinese dishes and are made up of a mix of Chinese and Malay influences.

This is some of the most delicious fusion food in the world and you should make sure not to miss some of the signature dishes here such as the Terengganu laksa which is a thick seafood soup flavored with curry and coconut milk.

You can also try other dishes such as Mee Jawa which are noodles fried with peanuts and vegetables.

18. Visit the Crystal Mosque

The Crystal Mosque is known as Masjid Kristal in Malay and is said to be one of the prettiest Muslim places of worship in all of Malaysia.

The mosque is so named thanks to the large crystal chandelier that occupies the main prayer all and this is also one of the mosque modern mosques of its kind.

The inside even has free Wi-Fi so that worshippers can read electronic copies of the Koran and much of the structure is made up of steel and glass.

If possible try to also visit the mosque at night as it is illuminated in a riot of colors such as pink, yellow, blue and green which make it sparkle under the dark skies.

19. Have a coffee at Star Anise

Locals will tell you that one of the best coffee shops in Kuala Terengganu is Star Anise.

You won’t find any instant coffee here as the place is filled with real espresso and cappuccino variations and the cafe itself is also a popular spot to relax and spend some time soaking up the local ambience.

You can also buy some local produce here which makes a great gift such as organic honey from the region.

20. Ride on Cas Ligas

One of the quirkiest sights you will see in Kuala Terengganu is the Cas Ligas Bus.

This will take you on a heritage tour of the city but the most amazing thing about it is that it is designed in the model of a traditional house in Kuala Terengganu.

The bus really has to be seen to be believed and this is a good way to see the highlights of the city while also enjoying this unique experience.

21. Take a boat ride to Seberang Takir

Seberang Takir is known for being a small and quaint fisherman’s village off the coast of Kuala Terengganu.

As such, if you want to get a glimpse of some of the authentic local culture here then you can hire a local boat and driver and whizz around the village and see how the local people have lived here for centuries.

Visitors are welcome to visit the village and you will find a boatman to take you across from the main jetty in Kuala Terengganu.

Make sure however to be respectful as this is a real working village.

22. Explore Taman Tamadun Islam

One of the quirkier attractions in Kuala Terengganu is Taman Tamadun Islam which is an Islamic theme park which is conveniently close to the main museum in town.

The park has miniature models of famous Muslim buildings the world over which will be fascinating for anyone interested in Islamic architecture and history.

This is also the location of the Crystal Mosque so you can visit both areas at the same time.

23. Have dinner at Restoran Golden Dragon

If you want some delicious Chinese food in Kuala Terengganu then head straight for the Golden Dragon.

Another great thing about this eatery is that they also serve plenty of cold beer so it is a wonderful choice after a long day of sightseeing.

Most of the food here is fish and seafood themed and you can get delicious dishes such as spicy squid as well as whole steamed fish.

24. Learn some history at the Muzium Negeri Terengganu

Muzium Negeri Terengganu is the official state museum of Terengganu and it is also said to be one of the largest in Malaysia.

The museum is actually more of a museum complex and is made up of four separate buildings including the Maritime Museum and a number of models of traditional houses.

There is also a Royal Gallery, and Islamic Gallery, a Craft Gallery and a Natural Gallery and you can learn all about the varied history and culture of this part of Malaysia.

25. Go mussel picking

If you want to have a go at mussel picking then now is your chance as the villages around Kuala Terengganu are known for their mussel farms.

If you want to try harvesting your own then you need to head to villages outside Kuala Terengganu such as Mangkuk, Seitu or Kuala Baru.

You can get to the villages as part of a tour and you can learn how to collect the mussels and find out how they are farmed in this part of Malaysia.

Think azure waters, powder-white sand beaches, and the best part, much lesser crowds compared with our neighbour’s party beaches. And, many of them are located in Terengganu, in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia overlooking the South China Sea. Best for scuba diving: Tenggol Island

Star quality: Perfect island to do nothing, but if you feel you have to, spot the nemo fish in its natural habitat, and even a reef shark or two when you dive!

Best for a mix of nightlife and family fun: Perhentian Islands

Pulau Perhentian, which means “stopover island” in Malay, has excellent underwater seascapes for snorkelling and scuba diving. Made up of two islands, Perhentian Besar is where the bigger resorts are and more suitable for fun, family activities, while Perhentian Kecil is more geared towards backpackers with more budget options for both food and accommodation. Best for a bit of history: Bidong Island

Bidong Island is most famous for once housing thousands of South Vietnamese refugees between 1978 and 1985 after the Vietnam War. The refugee camp has been closed since 1991, but some remnants remain on the island. Some local tour operators will happily take you there for a fee. Keen for a day trip? Star quality: Due to its lack of development, many of the dive areas around the island are untouched. Noteworthy is the Blue Garden, a dive site full of blue anemones. At dusk, the anemones close their tentacles and their bodies give off a glowing blue light.

Best for cultural experiences: Duyong Island

The epitome of an idyllic, Malay village, Duyung (or Duyong) Island has some of the most traditional daily scenes of local life, architecture, as well as boat-making workshops. Don’t miss the Duyong Art Fest in April, an annual art event showcasing the traditional anyaman or weaving craft, and a marketplace at the jetty selling various traditional Terengganu food and products.

Star quality: Its picturesque wooden houses. Look out for the Duyung Old Fort, which was built in the 1920s. Word has it, its walls were constructed by bricks made with a concoction of fine sand, lime, honey and egg white!

Best for a romantic rendezvous: Gem Island

Useful tips when island-hopping in Terengganu:

In Terengganu, weekdays begin from Sundays to Thursdays, while weekends are Fridays and Saturdays to observe Muslim afternoon prayers. As such, offices and banks are generally closed on Fridays and Saturdays as well.

Check the weather

Most resorts are closed for the monsoon season from November to January. Waters are at its calmest between April and July. Sightings of certain marine life are more common in certain months. For example, green turtles usually nest in August, while September is probably the best month to spot migratory whale sharks.

Adhere to marine park and regulations

Tourists are prohibited from buying souvenirs made of corals, shells and other marine animals such as starfish, as they are protected wildlife. If you are found in possession of such items, you will be fined up to RM5,000. Dead corals may sometimes be found washed ashore, but they should be left alone.

Island facilities

Mobile phone coverage may get spotty but it is generally adequate, especially on bigger, more developed islands. Keep some cash for emergency purposes, as some islands do not have ATMs. Power supply may be limited, and generators provide most of the electricity on the islands. Power outages may occur, and in many cheaper chalets, power is only provided at night.

• About Redang Island

Redang Island is a popular Malaysian island destination for diving, snorkeling, and enjoying the beaches and clear waters of Terengganu. Pulau Redang , or Redang Island, is the largest island in the Redang Archipelago. Malaysia and Singapore, which are nearby and offer popular resort style packages, draw the majority of guests to the island. Perhentian Islands, approximately 40 kilometres to the north, tend to be more popular with backpackers in Malaysia, while Redang Island itself caters more to family travelers or those looking for a resort-style island vacation.

Dive or snorkel in the sea around Pulau Redang for a breathtaking experience. The water surrounding Pulau Redang is home to over 3,000 species of fish, 1,000 species of bivalves, and 500 species of corals. To protect the marine life in this marine paradise, the island was made part of the Terengganu Marine Park, a protected marine area meant to protect the island’s ecosystem and biodiversity. Fishermen, marine life collectors, and boat anchors must stay at least two nautical miles away from these islands to avoid damaging the reef.

• When to visit

The best time to visit Redang Island is from June to August .  This is the dry season meaning that there will be enough sunshine all day long for you to go about your activities care-free. Redang Island is located on the east coast of Malaysia and is susceptible to bad weather from October/November until March/April due to the monsoon rains. By October, all resorts will have closed for the monsoon season. Visibility is also limited underwater due to the strong currents. In March, a new holiday season begins and all the island will be back in full swing. Redang offers great diving and snorkeling settings from June to August thanks to good weather and calm waters. There will also be an increase in prices, more visitors, and fewer accommodations as a result.

• How to get there

Most guests arrive at Redang by way of one of the ferries from the mainland (Kuala Terengganu) or in the boats operated by the resorts. There is also an airport on the island, which primarily serves the Berjaya resort (the only airline flying there is Berjaya Air).

Kuala Terengganu is accessible by road from Kuala Lumpur. Air-conditioned luxury coaches are available. You can use the highways and drive your personal vehicle. By drive, it’s approximately 7-8 hours from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu.

• Food & drinks

Food: The island is filled with surprisingly varied cuisine. You can expect menus full of crab, oyster, squid, lobster, and rice dishes from local, Indian, Chinese, and Western cuisines… all of it accompanied by live music. In fact, if you expect big parties or rowdy bars, your search will be in vain since all of the action is concentrated in the resorts’ beachside dining bars or cafes. The typical feature of much of them is live music on the beach! Generally, you shouldn’t worry about food since tour packages to Redang usually cover dining for all 3 meals (served by resorts).

Drink: Water from the tap is salty and unfit for drinking. There are many places that sell 1.5 L bottles of water for around RM3. Terengganu is unusual because alcohol is widely available both in convenience stores and resort restaurants (likely because most resorts are managed by Chinese businessmen), although it’s not exactly cheap. Beer cans cost RM7.8 in a store, and flasks of Malaysian vodka for RM15, while restaurants will happily charge you over RM100 for a bottle of wine. The island’s nightlife is limited to sitting in hotel restaurants with live bands, hotel karaokes, beach discos, or mingling around with other travelers at night bars.

• Where to stay

There are no backpacker accommodations in Redang. For most resorts, the rate is about RM200/night, always quoted for two people staying together. However, there are steep discounts available if you book a package or visit during the off-season or shoulder season. You can choose from budget resorts to luxury all-inclusive resorts here depending on what type of vacation you are looking for.

Redang Island’s resorts are mainly family-friendly, providing onsite facilities and activities such as tour and excursion arrangements. Resorts offers all-inclusive packages for those visitors who prefer this type of service. The room-only package is a good choice if you are looking for flexibility and do not want to be tied down by any pre-arranged activities.

As Redang Island is a popular tourist destination, it gets a lot of visitors during peak holiday seasons and on long weekends. You should always reserve your room in advance if you are planning a vacation on the island. • Things to do

The island of eternal sunshine and glimmering waters does not disappoint when it comes to holiday activities. Walk along the beautiful shorelines  and  take stunning pictures  of an island paradise. Explore popular beaches on Redang such as Teluk Dalam Beach or Long Beach (Pasir Panjang). Leap into the waters for a  refreshing swim  with the fishes. Put on your  snorkel mask for a closer look. Swim around a little while longer and you might just bump into a harmless reef shark or turtle. If you want to explore deeper, suit up and dive down under where the mysterious ocean depths await. What’s an island adventure without  turtles ? These chill sea creatures can be found nesting in the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, Pasir Mak Simpan, Pasir Bujang or Teluk Dalam beaches. If you’re lucky to catch a nesting turtle in action at night, remember to observe as quietly as possible!

Land-lovers, you’ll have the chance to  trek  through an ancient jungle that contains centuries-old secrets. Take in the cooling air of the island’s lush trees and thick flora as you navigate your way through the thickets and various jungle trails with a guide. At the end of each trail, you may be rewarded with breathtaking views and secluded swimming or snorkelling spots. If you’re living at Long Beach or Teluk Kalong, you’ll have the best views of a magnificent sunrise  when you wake up at 6 am!

Snorkelling

• Island facilities

Money:   There are no banks on Redang. There are no ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) either for cash withdrawal on the island. It is highly recommended that you withdraw enough cash in Kuala Terengganu before heading out. The good news is: most resorts at Redang now accept credit cards, so you’ll really only need cash for things like rentals, souvenirs, outside food, snacks and drinks.

Wheelchair Accessibility:  Unfortunately, Redang Island poses a significant challenge for wheelchair-bound travellers, especially when it comes to boarding boats. Flying to Redang on Berjaya Air and staying at The Taaras Resort & Spa is the only way to avoid the boats altogether. However, the cost of flying in will be significantly higher. A recently-built road that connects the resorts at Pasir Panjang to Teluk Bakau where Laguna’s jetty is located has made things slightly more comfortable. However, certain access roads leading to some resorts may not be fully paved, and resort grounds are often uneven or have steps that make it difficult for wheelchair users to cross. Most resorts also lack disabled-friendly ramps and facilities. Apart from The Taaras, Laguna Redang Island Resort is by far the most wheelchair-friendly resort with dedicated staff ready to assist. 

Daily Essentials:  The only shops on the island are sundry shops that sell bare essentials. This can range from medicine, snacks, drinks, tidbits, souvenirs and even beachwear. Keep in mind though that these shops do not carry a large variety of items. You can find such shops in resorts and villages. Infants/Young Children: Bring diapers, baby formula/food and other essential items your child needs as they are not sold here. Some larger resorts like Redang Island Resort and Laguna Resort can provide baby cradles and bathtubs on request. They can also help buy these items from the mainland if you specify the brand and the quantity required in advance. 

Laundry: There are no self-service laundry shops/ dobi  on the island. For clothes washing facilities on Redang, you are limited to resorts. Pulau Redang is a small island group in the South Chinese Sea, on the east side of Peninsular Malaysia. Redang lies within protected marine waters, also known as Terengganu Marine Park. It lies about 45 kilometres from the coast of the city of Kuala Terengganu. Redang Island has grown into one of the most popular tourist destinations on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The reefs of the Redang archipelago are home to over 55 genera of corals and 100 species of fish. The island is especially popular among travellers who like a bit more luxury during their stay. Redang has many luxurious resorts, many of them are of international standards. Redang is a perfect area to dive. It is known for its amazing visibility and pristine coral reefs. During a dive you are able to see schools of jacks, fusiliers and trevallies, black tip reef sharks, humphead parrotfish, cuttlefish and turtles. There are even occasional sightings of manta rays and whale sharks. The island is also perfect for nice nature walks. At the resorts you can ask for a map on which all roads are indicated. For these walks the same rules apply as the ones in the jungle, make sure you have an effective repellant against mosquitoes, and go well-dressed into the bush.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is on between march and October because most of the resorts are closed during the North-east Monsoon, which blows from November to February.

Traveller have to take ferry from jetties in Kuala Terengganu. The ferry rides take about 40 minutes from Merang jetty and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Shahbandar jetty.

From Kuala Lumpur, take the east bound highway to Kuantan and headed to highway 3 in the direction to Kuala Terengganu (follow the signboard). Marang is about 30-45 minutes after Dungun. If you come from Singapore, take the North-South Highway and exit at Yong Peng. Then, headed to Labis and Segamat and use highway 12 to Kuantan and use the coastal highway 3 to Marang in direction Kuala Terengganu.Cark park is available at both jetties with 24-hour surveillance charge around MYR10*.

There are many coaches available to go to Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru. The price of ticket from these terminal to Kuala Terengganu estimate around MYR50*. If you want to travel by coach from Singapore, you can choose to go with Transnational bus at Singapore Lavender bus station to Kuala Terengganu with price SGD48*. Their time travelling might be longer and as an alternative, Konsortium bus is another choice operate at Singapore Golden Mile Complex directly to Merang/Shahbandar jetty.

Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia fly directly to Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur International Airport twice daily for about 45 minutes of journey. Meanwhile, Malindo Air and Firefly depart from Subang Airport. Then, you can take public transport to the jetty after arrive in Kuala Terengganu.
