What is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass  is a membership club with a global network of 1,500+ airport lounges. It's the largest independent airport lounge access program in the world. Members can swap busy airport terminals for complimentary refreshments and quiet spaces. Added perks include retail discounts and restaurant credits.

Two ways to get Priority Pass

Consumers have two ways of accessing Priority Pass lounges. They can either buy a membership , or get a free membership with a credit card (but expect to pay an annual fee for that card).

1. Buy a Priority Pass membership

Travelers can choose between three levels of membership which offer different pricing and benefits:

Standard Membership level - for occasional travelers

  • Annual Fee $99/year

Standard plus Membership level - For regular travelers

  • Annual Fee $329/year

Prestige Membership level - For frequent travelers

  • All member visits are free
  • Annual Fee $469/year

In general, membership levels are suited to travelers based on the amount of travel they do.

2. Get a free Priority Pass Select membership with a credit card

Frequent flyers get the most out of this option with unlimited airport lounge access and travel rewards. Annual fees and the cost of additional guests will depend on the card. When used strategically, Priority Pass Select benefits may outweigh the cost of a luxury card's annual fee.

How to get Priority Pass with a Chase credit card

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card ®  offers a free Priority Pass Select membership. Cardmembers get full access to every Priority Pass airport lounge for up to two guests (additional guests are $27 per visit). Authorized card users are also eligible for their own Priority Pass Select membership.

Priority Pass benefits

Priority Pass airport lounges are popular because you don't have to fly a specific airline or class to enter them. There are over a thousand airport lounges in Priority Pass's global network . Amenities will vary, ranging from simple to luxurious.

General amenities

Most Priority Pass airport lounges have comfortable seating and business facilities — like work stations, reliable Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets for charging your devices. They may also offer a range of media, like newspapers, magazines and TV. Beverages and snacks are complimentary, and adult beverages may be free or offered at a low cost.

Restaurant lounges

Priority Pass members get dining credits to nearly 30 airport restaurants and bars. Note that the credit may not be applied to tips.

Private mini-suites

Priority Pass also offers access to private sleeping areas in select airports.

Luxury amenities

Some Priority Pass airport lounges have special features unique to that location only. For example, some offer waterfall features, natural green walls, fireplaces, putting greens and even outdoor pools.

Additional offers

There are more than 800 Priority Pass benefits available for members through the Priority Pass mobile app. You'll find airport-specific discounts for restaurants, retailers, spa experiences and more.

How to use Priority Pass benefits

Once you get Priority Pass membership set up, enjoying the benefits only takes few steps:

Activate your membership

You'll need to activate your Priority Pass Select membership before you can use it —simply showing your credit card at the lounge will not work. Activation steps will vary by credit card.

If you have a Chase credit card with Priority Pass Select membership as a benefit, here are the steps to activate:

  • Sign in to Chase Ultimate Rewards . (If already signed in, select your "Total Points" in the bottom left.)
  • Choose the card you'd like to enroll.
  • Select "Card Benefits."
  • Scroll to see benefits, then choose "Travel."
  • Select "Complimentary Airport Lounge Access."

After activating your membership, you'll receive a Priority Pass card in the mail.

Tip: Authorized card users are automatically enrolled. If you add someone to your card after enrolling, call the number on the back of your card to activate their Priority Pass membership.

Get a digital membership card and download the app

Most Priority Pass airport lounges accept digital membership cards. Having this info on your smartphone helps if you ever misplace your physical card. You can see more information  here . If you're an eligible Chase customer, now you can also access your Priority Pass Digital Membership Card in the Chase Mobile ® app. You can find it in the Explore Lounges section under Benefits > Travel.

Visit a Priority Pass airport lounge

Use the Priority Pass app to find a lounge. To enter, all you have to do is scan your physical or digital membership card for the lounge attendant.

How to get the most from Priority Pass benefits

Here are some tips for maximizing every benefit and convenience the program offers:

There is not a Priority Pass airport lounge in every airport. As you shop for flights, include airport lounge availability and amenities in your search. Compare flights and lounges to make sure:

  • The lounge will be open when you need it.
  • Your preferred amenities will be available.
  • The lounge time limits match your trip.
  • Your guests or children are allowed.

Arrive early

Getting to the lounge a couple of hours before a flight means less stress and more time to enjoy the amenities. Check the lounge information ahead of time to see how early you can go in. Some airport lounges restrict travelers to three hours before their flight.

Use your restaurant credit

Check the Priority Pass app for participating restaurants. Upon arrival, let the server or bartender know you're using your card. They will register you and up to one guest, and you'll get a credit, discount or savings (tips are not included).

Read your credit card's terms and the restaurant's terms beforehand. See if they include a guest credit, and make sure you're OK with any limitations, such as no take-out orders..

Use your card's travel benefits

Most cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, offer a host of other travel benefits along with Priority Pass Select. Be sure to take advantage of these rewards, like welcome bonuses or travel credits, along with accessing airport lounges.

In conclusion

To many travelers, having access to airport lounges makes traveling much more enjoyable. Priority Pass is a great option for if you're seeking amenities and conveniences that you won't find anywhere else in the airport.

If you're looking for lounge access in addition to earning rewards for your travel and dining expenses, check out the  Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.

Relaxing in airport lounges can be a great way to destress before boarding a flight, whether you’re at your point of departure or during a layover. However, without a membership to an airport lounge network like Priority Pass, accessing these lounges can be rather expensive.

Let’s take a look at all the different credit cards that provide Priority Pass benefits (organized by issuer) and identify the benefits associated with each card.

What is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass is a membership program offering access to airport lounges and various travel perks. With a Priority Pass membership, you can experience amenities like comfortable seating, complimentary refreshments, Wi-Fi access, and more at airport lounges worldwide.

Priority Pass offers multiple membership tiers, including Standard, Standard Plus, and Prestige, each offering different benefits and lounge access. In addition to lounges, Priority Pass has introduced a new feature that allows members to enjoy complimentary food and beverages at select airport restaurants.

Note that Priority Pass and Priority Pass Select are often used interchangeably, but there is a slight difference between the two. Priority Pass is the name of the lounge network and can also refer to the membership itself. Priority Pass Select is the name of the membership access you get from certain credit cards.

How Much Does a Priority Pass Membership Cost?

Priority Pass offers three membership levels for lounge access:

  • Standard: $99 per year (includes visits for $35 each for the member and any guests)
  • Standard Plus: $329 per year (includes 10 free visits per year with subsequent visits for $35 each, and all guest visits cost $35)
  • Prestige: $469 per year (includes unlimited free visits for the member, and all guest visits cost $35)

As evident, accessing Priority Pass lounges can get pricey. Fortunately, many U.S. credit cards offer Priority Pass Select memberships, with some providing individual access and others including free priority pass guest visits. The specific Priority Pass perks included in your Priority Pass Select membership will depend on your credit card.

Moreover, some Priority Pass Select memberships come with credits for use at restaurants, cafes, spas and other airport amenities. Access to these perks also depends on your credit card.

Taking the time to learn which cards offer which Priority Pass benefits is worthwhile. Considering the cost of food and drinks at airports, having access to complimentary food and beverages at restaurants and airport lounges can offer significant value.

How to Use Priority Pass Select

Regardless of which card you have, you should be aware that you can’t just walk up to a Priority Pass lounge, restaurant or other participating business and present your credit card and receive your benefits. You’ll first have to enroll in the program through a link that you can find in the “Benefits” section of your credit card account.

After following the link, you’ll be asked to enter your credit card number. Within minutes, you’ll be enrolled in Priority Pass Select. It can take up to two weeks for your Priority Pass membership card to arrive in the mail, so we recommend enrolling in Priority Pass Select as soon as you get your credit card. However, if you want to access a lounge or other benefit before your physical card arrives, you can download the Priority Pass app and get a digital membership card, which can be used at nearly all of their facilities.

Most Priority Pass lounges require you to present a boarding pass for your flight to enter and won’t allow entry more than three hours before your flight’s scheduled departure.

Card with Priority Pass Select Benefits

Which Credit Cards Have Priority Pass Select?

American express.

American Express offers Priority Pass Select membership with two of its own cards and several of its co-branded cards as well.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express is Amex’s top-of-the-line premium credit card with an annual fee of $695 (see rates & fees ). So, it’s no surprise that this card comes with premium travel benefits like Priority Pass Select membership. With the Amex Platinum card, you’ll get unlimited free access to more than 1,300+ Priority Pass lounges for yourself and one guest. Any additional guests will need to pay the standard guest entrance fee.

Authorized users on your Amex Platinum card also can enroll in their own Priority Pass Select membership. When adding an authorized user, you must choose whether they receive a Platinum Card or a Gold Card. Only those who are added with a Platinum Card are eligible to receive their own Priority Pass Select membership.

Amex Platinum cardholders must pay an additional annual fee of $195 per authorized user added to their account as Platinum Card members. There’s no fee to add them as Gold Card members, but they won’t be eligible for their own Priority Pass membership. There will also be an additional $195 annual fee added for any more authorized users after those three.

Unfortunately, American Express has removed access to all non-lounge experiences through its Priority Pass Select memberships. Thus, the Amex Platinum Card will get you into lounges for free, but it won’t do you any good at restaurants, spas or other non-lounge businesses.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

The Priority Pass benefits offered by The Business Platinum Card® from American Express which also has an annual fee of $695 ( rates & fees ) mirror those offered by the Amex Platinum personal card (as detailed above). The only distinction is the cost for adding authorized users to your Amex Business Platinum card account, which is $350, compared to the $175 annual fee for adding up to three authorized users to your Amex Platinum personal card.

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card , with its annual fee of $450, provides the opportunity to enroll in Priority Pass Select, offering unlimited complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges for the cardholder and up to two guests. Any additional guests will incur the standard guest entrance fee.

However, this card’s Priority Pass Select membership doesn’t extend benefits to non-lounge Priority Pass locations.

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is a highly affordable option for individuals seeking Priority Pass lounge access without substantial out-of-pocket expenses. This card, charging an annual fee of $95 (see rates & fees ), includes a Priority Pass Select membership offering 10 complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges per year.

A Priority Pass Standard Plus membership, offering the same number of visits, costs $329 annually. This makes the Hilton Honors Surpass Card an attractive choice for budget-conscious travelers seeking Priority Pass lounge access.

Please note that this benefit is limited to the primary cardholder. Authorized users aren’t eligible for their own Priority Pass Select membership. However, the primary cardholder can extend one of their 10 complimentary visits to a guest. For instance, as a Surpass cardholder, you can use two of your annual complimentary visits to cover the entry for both you and a guest to a Priority Pass lounge.

This card doesn’t offer benefits at non-lounge locations.

This membership doesn’t include complimentary guest visits. Guests will have to pay the standard guest entrance fee. Alternatively, you can use one of your 10 yearly complimentary visits for a free guest visit.

Like all other Amex-issued cards, the Hilton Honors Business card doesn’t offer any benefits at non-lounge Priority Pass locations.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card , with an annual fee of $650 (see rates & fees ), also offers a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. Unlike the Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum cards, which allow only one guest into lounges free-of-charge, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card permits two guests to accompany you into lounges at no additional cost. Any guests beyond these two will incur the standard guest entrance fee. Naturally, the primary cardholder is entitled to unlimited complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges.

Regrettably, similar to all other Amex cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant doesn’t offer benefits at non-lounge locations.

Bank of America

Bank of America currently issues only one card that offers Priority Pass Select membership, and it’s their top-tier travel card.

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite Credit Card

Bank of America’s top-of-the-line travel card, the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite Credit Card, charges an annual fee of $550. This card grants Priority Pass Select membership for up to four individuals on the account, including the primary cardholder and up to three authorized users.

Each member will receive unlimited complimentary lounge visits for themselves and up to two guests. Any additional guests will be required to pay the standard guest entry fee.

The Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card doesn’t offer any benefits at Priority Pass non-lounge locations.

Barclays currently only offers one credit card that comes with Priority Pass Select benefits and it’s the top-of-the-line co-branded credit card from Emirates.

Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard®

As the name suggests, the Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard® is a premium card from Emirates. This card has an annual fee of $499, and it comes with unlimited complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges for the primary cardholder and up to two guests per visit.

Any authorized users on your Emirates Skywards Premium card also can enroll in Priority Pass membership at no additional cost.

Unfortunately, this card doesn’t offer Priority Pass Select non-lounge benefits.

credit cards with priority pass select membership

Capital One

Capital One currently offers only one credit card that comes with a membership to Priority Pass Select: the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. However, Capital One has revealed plans to issue a business version of this card that is expected to come with a Priority Pass Select membership as well.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , Capital One’s premium travel card with an annual fee of $395, offers a Priority Pass Select membership that includes unlimited complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges for yourself and up to two guests. If you have more than two guests, the additional guests will need to pay the standard guest entry fee.

Unfortunately, Priority Pass non-lounge experiences are no longer included with the Venture X Card.

One noteworthy feature of the Venture X Card is the option to add up to four authorized users to the account at no additional cost. Each authorized user can also obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership.

As previously mentioned, Capital One has announced plans to issue a business version of the Venture X Card in the near-future. This card is expected to be almost identical to the consumer version of the Venture X Card, so it follows that it will probably also come with a Priority Pass Select membership.

Chase also offers Priority Pass Select as a perk with their top-of-the-line travel cards only. However, unlike the other cards mentioned thus far, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card offers access to Priority Pass non-lounge experiences, which can be a huge value if used frequently.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Among the currently available cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card likely offers the best Priority Pass perks. This card includes unlimited complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges for the cardholder and up to two guests.

Additionally, each authorized user can also receive a Priority Pass Select membership. However, adding authorized users to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card incurs a $75 annual fee per user, unlike the Capital One Venture X card, which allows up to four authorized users at no additional cost.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s advantage over other cards is its offering of non-lounge Priority Pass benefits. This enables cardholders to enjoy perks at participating restaurants, spas, retailers and other businesses.

For example, at many restaurants, Priority Pass Select members through the Chase Sapphire Reserve card receive a $28 to $30 discount on their order and the same discount on a guest’s order. This equates to $56 to $60 in value every time you visit a participating restaurant (including numerous bars).

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card

Though The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card is no longer open to new applicants, you can still obtain it by signing up for one of the three Chase-issued Marriott Bonvoy cards (the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card , the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card or the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Credit Card) and then converting your Marriott card to The Ritz-Carlton card. To qualify, your Chase-issued Marriott card account must be open for at least 12 months with a credit line of at least $10,000.

If you meet these requirements, obtaining The Ritz-Carlton card could be an excellent choice, particularly if you desire a Priority Pass Select membership. With an annual fee of $450, this card provides a Priority Pass membership identical to the one offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, which also includes access to non-lounge perks.

The Ritz-Carlton card differs from the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card in that it allows the addition of authorized users at no extra cost. Although authorized users on this card don’t receive all the same perks as the primary cardholder, they can obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership with full benefits.

Citi’s only credit card that offers Priority Pass benefits is their top-tier travel card the Citi Prestige Card, which was meant to rival cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.  However, as the popularity of the Citi Prestige Card declined, Citi decided to phase it out, and applications for this card are no longer being accepted. In fact, Citi no longer allows customers to product change any cards to the Prestige Card.

Citi Prestige Card

Although you can’t obtain the Citi Prestige Card, if you already possess it, you should be aware of its Priority Pass benefits. The Prestige Card, with an annual fee of $495, includes a Priority Pass Select membership, which provides complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges for yourself, immediate family members and up to two guests.

Unlike many other cards mentioned, the Citi Prestige Card still features Priority Pass non-lounge benefits. Additionally, for an extra annual fee of $50 per person, you can add authorized users to your card, allowing each authorized user to obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership with identical benefits.

If you don’t currently hold the Citi Prestige Card, you haven’t missed much. The card experienced a massive devaluation when Citi raised its annual fee without altering its benefits, resulting in its discontinuation. Far better premium travel card options are still available.

U.S. Bank offers two personal credit cards and one business card that come with Priority Pass benefits. In terms of the cheapest cards with complimentary Priority Pass lounge access, the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card and the U.S. Bank Business AltitudeTM Connect World Elite Mastercard® are your best options. So, if you want to enjoy airport lounge access without paying a high annual fee, then the U.S. Bank might be the right issuer for you.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card is the most affordable card offering Priority Pass Select benefits. With a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year and a $95 annual fee thereafter, this card includes a Priority Pass Select membership that grants four complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges each membership year. Note that your membership year starts when you enroll in Priority Pass Select, not when you sign up for the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect card.

Regrettably, Priority Pass Select membership is restricted to one person per account, meaning authorized users on the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Card can’t obtain their own complimentary Priority Pass Select membership.

It’s also important to note that bringing guests into Priority Pass lounges with you will count against your four annual complimentary visits. For instance, if you and a guest enter a Priority Pass lounge during your trip, it will count as two of your annual complimentary visits. Standard guest rates apply once all annual complimentary visits are exhausted.

Similar to most other cards mentioned, the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Card doesn’t offer non-lounge Priority Pass benefits.

For those seeking access to Priority Pass lounges at a low cost, the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Card is the best choice. Many people with Priority Pass Select memberships don’t visit Priority Pass lounges more than four times per year. As such, accessing these lounges for a modest annual fee of $95 (waived for the first year) rather than paying for a premium travel card charging $400 or $500 annually is an attractive option.

U.S. Bank Business Altitude™ Connect World Elite Mastercard®

The U.S. Bank Business Altitude™ Connect World Elite Mastercard® offers a $0 introductory annual fee and then $95 annually for every year after that, making it one of the two least expensive cards that comes with Priority Pass Select benefits.

With this card, you’ll get four complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges every membership year. Once again, your membership year will begin when you enroll in Priority Pass Select, not when you sign up for the U.S. Bank Business Altitude Connect card.

Just like with the personal version of this card, Priority Pass Select membership is limited to one person per account and authorized users can’t get their own Priority Pass Select memberships. Likewise, each guest that you bring into a lounge with you will count towards your total of four complimentary visits per year.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Bank Business Altitude Connect Card doesn’t come with non-lounge benefits.

The Business Altitude Connect Card is a great option for those who want to get into Priority Pass lounges for free without signing up for a high-annual-fee credit card. Unfortunately, you have to be a small business owner to get this card. Keep in mind that gig economy workers, freelancers, independent contractors and sole proprietors should be able to qualify for this card (or any other business card).

U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card , this issuer’s premium travel card with an annual fee of $400, also includes a Priority Pass Select membership. However, like the Altitude Connect Card, the Altitude Reserve Card doesn’t permit authorized users to obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership.

This membership grants four complimentary visits per membership year and four complimentary guest visits per membership year. Keep in mind that a membership year commences when you enroll in Priority Pass Select, not when you sign up for the Altitude® Reserve Card.

This Priority Pass Select membership excludes non-lounge benefits.

Considering the premium travel card’s $400 annual fee, the limit of four complimentary lounge visits per membership year is somewhat disappointing. In contrast, the Capital One Venture X Card has an annual fee of $395 and provides unlimited complimentary visits for yourself and up to two guests. Additionally, unlike the U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card, the Capital One Venture X Card allows adding up to four authorized users at no extra cost, and each authorized user can obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership free of charge.

U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card

after you spend $4,500 in the first 90 days

The Bottom Line

If maximizing the benefits of your Priority Pass Select membership is your primary motivation for choosing a premium credit card, you may want to consider either the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card (also issued by Chase but only obtainable through a product change from a different Chase card).

These are two of the few cards still offering Priority Pass Select non-lounge benefits. The benefits frequently include up to $30 in credits for food or drinks for you and a guest, meaning you can enjoy up to $60 worth of free food and drinks each time you visit a Priority Pass-participating restaurant with a guest.

Alternatively, if you wish to “share the wealth,” the Capital One Venture X Card permits adding up to four authorized users to your account at no extra cost. Each authorized user can obtain their own Priority Pass Select membership, granting unlimited complimentary lounge visits for themselves and up to two guests. In comparison, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® charges $75 for each authorized user on the account. Unfortunately, the Venture X Card doesn’t include non-lounge benefits.

However, if your goal is to obtain Priority Pass lounge access at the lowest possible cost, consider the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Card. This card offers four complimentary lounge visits per year for a standard annual fee of $95, which is waived for the first cardmember year. Although these complimentary visits exclude guests, this card is the only option in this price tier currently offering complimentary Priority Pass lounge access.

Ultimately, whichever card you choose, a Priority Pass Select membership can be one of the most valuable credit card benefits for frequent flyers. The ability to enjoy free food, free drinks and a place to relax at the airport can translate to hundreds or thousands of dollars in annual savings.

Chase® needed a partner to provide VIP airport lounge access to their high net worth credit card customers, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® portfolio.

They were entering a market dominated by a competitor’s card product and needed to be able to compete effectively with that card’s lounge access package.    Our Priority Pass lounge and experiences programme, with a worldwide network of over 1,300 lounges, provided Chase with the coverage to enter the market with the largest and most credible airport lounge programme included in their benefit package.  The Chase Sapphire Reserve card was launched with tremendous success and has become a highly-valued premium travel card in the US market.

A customised digital membership card solution that was not previously available to Chase cardholders

The launch of a premium travel card into the us market with the confidence of a premium benefit, we worked with our lounge partners to ensure the appropriate coverage would be available.

Improving loyalty and engagement with premium customers

Alfa-Bank develop premium services, offer convenient solutions and select the best partners in market for their affluent customers, to drive acquisition and retention. As the leading premium airport lounge programme in Russia and globally, Priority Pass plays a key role in keeping Alfa- Bank’s customers engaged and satisfied with the bank’s service offering.  Alfa-Bank provides complimentary Priority Pass membership to their premium banking segment and it remains the most requested non-banking loyalty benefit. This benefit allows the bank’s most valued customers to enjoy access to the world’s largest and growing network of more than 1,300 airport lounges. Many of these lounges are domestic and supplemented by Priority Pass’ premium railway lounge network in Russia, which meant Alfa-Bank's customers could keep using the benefit even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.  For three consecutive years, Alfa-Bank have been a Frank Premium Banking Award recipient. In October 2020, the bank was rated top in premium bank services in Russia, with Alfa-Premium being named the Best Premium Service Program, based on studies of 16 premium banking services conducted by Frank RG analysts.

Quick Points: Maximize Priority Pass benefits by labeling your cards

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

Many premium travel rewards credit cards  come with a Priority Pass membership that gives cardmembers access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide .

What’s sometimes forgotten, though, is that not all Priority Pass memberships have the same benefits. Some provide unlimited visits, while others do not include access to non-lounge airport venues and perks, such as airport restaurant credits .

Plus, guesting privileges can vary from one membership type to the next. All this said, if you have Priority Pass membership from more than one credit card, it’s important to keep track of your Priority Pass cards so you don’t incur any unexpected charges.

Since all Priority Pass cards look the same, there’s no easy way to tell them apart and distinguish which one came with which of your credit cards. Luckily, there’s a simple solution: label them.

Label your Priority Pass cards

The easiest way to tell your Priority Pass cards apart is by labeling them.

Since the card is black, your best option is to either make a note on the signature box on the back of the card or add a small sticker. If you prefer to use the digital card, you can take a screenshot of the QR code and add a note to it, or add the issuing bank’s name to your Priority Pass username (i.e. RyanAmex).

Related: There is such a thing as a free airport lunch — here’s how to get one

If you’ve already confused your cards, you should be able to find your Priority Pass membership number via your online credit card account or by calling your bank.

Priority Pass membership rules vary from one credit card to the next, so you’ll want to review your card’s benefits guide for full details. However, as a general rule, you’ll want to note that American Express and Capital One credit cards with Priority Pass memberships exclude the restaurant benefit.

Most cards offer up to two free guests per visit, though some cards (like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card) allow you to bring unlimited guests . If you accidentally use the wrong card, you might be charged $35 (or more) per guest.

And remember, stacking multiple Priority Pass memberships at one lounge to bring in extra guests typically isn’t allowed.

If you don’t already have a card that offers a Priority Pass membership in your wallet, check out this guide for our favorite cards that offer Priority Pass .

SPONSORED:  With states reopening, enjoying a meal from a restaurant no longer just means curbside pickup.

And when you do spend on dining, you should use a credit card that will maximize your rewards and potentially even score special discounts. Thanks to temporary card bonuses and changes due to coronavirus, you may even be able to score a meal at your favorite restaurant for free.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.

5 Reasons the Chase Sapphire Reserve Is the Ultimate Family Travel Card

Labeling any card the “ ultimate card ” for a specific use is a tough call. But when it comes to traveling with a family, the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® stands alone — and for good reason.

On balance, the Sapphire Reserve can make travel more affordable, frequent, and comfortable. We also consider it an excellent option for families serious about travel.

Here are five reasons why we think the Sapphire Reserve is the ultimate family travel card.

Page Contents

Help Offset the Annual Fee With a $300 Annual Travel Credit

Earn valuable ultimate rewards, accrue points faster with bonus categories, relax at a chase sapphire or priority pass airport lounge, shopping protections, travel coverage, final thoughts.

If there's one metric that separates a premium travel card from a non-premium one, it's the annual fee. At $550, the annual fee for the Sapphire Reserve is by no means cheap, but the card's headline perk immediately takes the sting off that otherwise high number.

The Sapphire Reserve‘s annual $300 travel credit is awarded each year that you carry the card, and it's ready to put to use as soon as you open your new account. The credit is simple to use, and there's nothing to activate. When you use the card on a purchase that codes as “travel,” you'll see a reimbursement within a few days. This process continues until you've used the entirety of the $300 credit.

a family takes a selfie together in front of a giant arch

Of course, “travel” is a broad category, but that's part of what makes the perk great. From airfare to toll bridges, sightseeing to tourist attractions, there's a high chance it counts as travel.

Family travel isn't cheap, but $300 can go a long way, depending on how you use it. The only downside with this perk is that there's a great chance you'll start using it before you know it — since so many things count as “travel.” Plus, you don't earn bonus points on travel purchases that are offset by this credit.

One of the best aspects of flexible rewards points is that their uses feel endless. Chase Ultimate Rewards are no different.

Ultimate Rewards showcase their value and versatility through the long list of Chase transfer partners . No matter what your family travel goals are, there's a strong chance you can make them happen with Chase points.

Chase partners with 11 airlines and three hotel loyalty programs, and you can move your Ultimate Rewards points to one of these partners at a 1:1 ratio. If you're lucky, you can take advantage of a transfer bonus and receive a higher return on your points transfers — meaning more travel for fewer points. And most transfers to Chase's partners are instant.

Booking award travel for a family might sound like a dauntingly expensive task, but it doesn't have to be. There are many practical airline award sweet spots for families , and you aren't confined solely to domestic flights to enjoy them.

As a refresher, here are all the airline loyalty programs you can move your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to:

And the hotel loyalty programs offer fantastic value as well.

An integral piece of any credit card strategy is carrying cards that reward your spending in the best way possible. The more points you earn, the more you can travel with your family; it's as simple as that.

For travel- and food-loving families, the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® is an incredibly valuable companion. Cardholders earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on flight reservations made through Chase Travel℠  and 10X on hotels and car rentals booked here. You'll also earn 3X Ultimate Rewards on dining at restaurants and through food delivery services, plus 10X on Chase Dining purchases. If your family routinely spends money in these categories, your points balance will grow quickly.

A small caveat: the 3X, 5X, and 10X categories only kick in after you've used the $300 annual travel credit. Until then, you won't earn Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchases.

Summer vacation, Happy family together on the beach in holiday. Silhouette of the family holding hands enjoying the sunset on the tropical beach.

Another consideration you'll want to make is that the Sapphire Reserve earns 1 Ultimate Rewards point per $1 spent on all other purchases. This isn't a great return, so you'll want to consider pairing the Sapphire Reserve with another Chase credit card that earns Ultimate Rewards points to maximize your earning potential on everyday purchases.

This way, you can take full advantage of all the leading benefits the Sapphire Reserve offers and avoid settling for a poor return on all non-bonused spending.

If there's a better way to kick off a family vacation than spending quality time in an amenity-filled airport lounge, we'd love to hear it. Sapphire Reserve cardholders can access 1,300+ Priority Pass airport lounges , plus every Chase Sapphire Lounge , so you can relax before the runway at an incredible number of locations.

There aren't many Sapphire lounges in existence yet, but the few that are currently operating are stunning. If you're traveling through Boston (BOS) or Hong Kong (HKG), afford yourself and your family some time to explore them. Travelers transiting through or originating in Austin (AUS) also have access to the Chase Sapphire Terrace — a locally inspired outdoor space to fuel up pre-flight.

Chase Lounge Boston reception

Unlike the Sapphire lounges, Priority Pass lounges are a dime a dozen. Priority Pass Select requires a one-time activation. Immediately after completion, you can access brand-affiliated lounges, restaurants, and cafes.

If you're the Sapphire Reserve ‘s primary cardholder, you and your authorized users can enjoy complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges with a maximum of two accompanying guests each. Additional guests will incur a $27 charge, which will be charged to your Sapphire Reserve.

Many credit cards offer Priority Pass lounge access, so you might take the line about “access may be denied if the lounge is at capacity” in the Sapphire Reserve ‘s terms and conditions to heart. To improve your odds of getting into a lounge, you might consider traveling at off-peak hours. While it's not a perfect science, it won't hurt your chances of getting in when lounges are less busy.

Enjoy Extensive Travel and Shopping Protections

Although they aren't the flashiest of benefits, the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® ‘s shopping coverage and travel protections are second to none. When you use the card, you can rest easy knowing you're covered before, during, and after your family trip.

The Sapphire Reserve‘s expansive shopping protections make it a clear choice for booking trips and paying for expenses while on the road. Here's a snapshot of some of the shopping protections you'll enjoy when you swipe the card:

  • Return protection
  • Purchase protection
  • Extended warranty protection
  • Zero liability protection
  • No foreign transaction fees

a family packing suitcases for a trip

Achieving peace of mind while traveling isn't always easy, but the Sapphire Reserve has you and your family's back if your family trip is turned upside down. No matter the reason, the odds are pretty good that there's some form of coverage for it. Whether the airline loses your bags, your rental car breaks down, or a family member gets sick before departure, you may be covered.

Here's the complete list of travel coverage offered by the Sapphire Reserve.

  • Primary coverage via an Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Emergency evacuation and transportation
  • Roadside assistance
  • Emergency medical and dental benefit
  • Travel and emergency assistance services

However, as with all insurance benefits, be sure to read the guide to benefits before assuming a specific incident will be covered.

Is immediate family defined the same way on the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

' data-src=

In what context?

For travel insurance protection. Just wondering if the preferred will extend travel protection to the same categories of immediate family.

Many of the benefits apply to immediate family, but you’ll want to check the specific type of travel protection in the benefits guide. https://awardwallet.com/blog/master-list-credit-card-benefits-guides/

' data-src=

Great post! I currently have the Chase Sapphire Preferred but may look at upgrading for the lounge benefits alone. Anyone else found it a useful upgrade to go from the Preferred to the Reserve?

' data-src=

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is an amazing, must have, credit card.

' data-src=

I really wish this card was available in Canada. Unfortunately, Chase seems to be exiting the Canadian market as their other cars (Marriott Rewards Visa) are in the process of being closed =/

' data-src=

Thank you. If I am within the 5/24 Chase limit one day, I’ll have to look into the Sapphire CArd options.

' data-src=

This card was good enough to get Citi to back down on competing in this space. That says something.

' data-src=

Excellent point!

' data-src=

I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred and I love it. However, I am always seeing the Reserved card on the short list of what ppl should have. I can see how this is an excellent card, but if I have young children, how does the lounge thing work if the lounge doesn’t allow children in? Even though the card allows you entrance it still looks like you must adhere to their rules, correct?

If a lounge doesn’t allow children, they simply can’t get in. You’ve got to adhere to the rules.

' data-src=

It’s hard not to like this card.

' data-src=

Great travel benefits to this card. Hoping for a better sign-up bonus to come along.

You’re not likely going to see an increased signup bonus on these cards anytime soon.

' data-src=

CSR all the way!!

' data-src=

I am using it daily. What a great card!

' data-src=

Nice perks but expensive and don’t like banking scandal around Chase

To each his own I suppose.

' data-src=

I would agree it is a great card.

' data-src=

I’m a huge fan of this card, but I never put much emphasis on the travel insurance until a couple weeks ago where it applied big time.

I can only imagine how much that value would increase if I was traveling with a family.

' data-src=

Great card and info. Awesome benefits that make AF with it IMO. Only wish they had not denied me during original promotion. Ughh…That chase 5/24. Maybe down the road.

' data-src=

Really wished that Chase did not exit from Canada…

' data-src=

This is absolutely the best card in my wallet.

' data-src=

Thank you for this information! Very helpful. Fingers crossed for a massive bonus points offer for all of us, soon!

' data-src=

Thanks Howie. So, then I think I have 2 options, assuming we keep renting the way we always have. 1. have him pay with another card in his name that also has primary (I think the Cap 1 Visa sig does as well) 2. add him as an AU on my CSR and have him charge the rental on his card. Guess I’m off to see what that will cost me on the CSR – this is a new card for me. Any other benefits he would receive by adding him as AU so that I can justify whatever it is?

cece, this post, and linked articles covers the relevant benefits. He gets his own priority pass membership and all the insurance protection as well.

Re #3 – Rental primary insurance. My CSR is in my name (embossed on card). We use it to pay for the rental cars. However, when we rent cars, it is my husband who handles the rental contract in his name and the driving -he is the named driver. I know the post says the policy covers “additional” drivers. But we never pay for an “additional driver” – he is it. Will we still be covered?

No, you would not be covered. Your husband would need to have a card in his name or you would need to rent a car and add him as an additional driver.

' data-src=

Does look like a good card to have!

' data-src=

if only it wasn’t so expensive! I think this would only makes sense for me if I travel more than 4 times a year.

' data-src=

Definitely worth switching from the CSP. A real game changer!

' data-src=

Good post! I knew about most of the benefits, but I wasn’t aware about the extent of the rental insurance and travel insurance. Does anyone have experience making a claim with Chase?

' data-src=

Great article! I agree.

' data-src=

The meal money in lieu of a club is quite a bonus.

' data-src=

Honestly I never imagined I’d be as excited over a credit card as I am with the CSR. An all-around great experience.

' data-src=

I am very enticed by this card and have been thinking of getting it for the past 1 month…I might just take the leap soon.

' data-src=

Very timely article, as I’m considering applying for this card! I just wish the signup bonus was back where it originally was at 100,000 (or even 75k)!

' data-src=

Hands down this is the best travel card. And I was lucky enough to get the 100,000 Ultimate Reward sign up bonus. Oh yes!

' data-src=

I don’t have this card yet but hope they will bring the 100K point bonus back.

I wouldn’t hold your breath.

' data-src=

Switching my wife to this card while I cancel mine. Double travel credits pay for itself!

' data-src=

what a great card to have. too bad 5/24 limits me to signing up for this.

' data-src=

A good card to consider! Thanks for the detailed info about it.

' data-src=

The ability to transfer points directly to the airline account of a household member is awesome. My GF and I got the Southwest Companion Pass this year, because I have the Chase SW Plus/Premier cards. But she has the CSR – so she can xfer her UR points to my SWA acct, where I book travel with them and add her as the companion. Otherwise I’d have to actually pay for my flights!

' data-src=

This is my favorite credit card, it is worth the annual fee for me.

' data-src=

Looks like a good card to have.

' data-src=

love the perks, getting set for a big trip, CSR card in hand!

' data-src=

I didnt know the insurances also covered family members. That alone could be valuable for some families.

' data-src=

Absolutely love this card — it’s changed the way I travel.

' data-src=

Totally agree. This is my go-to travel card. I love the perks!

' data-src=

I keep putting off switching to this card from my Sapphire Preferred because of the authorized user card fee. (The annual fee itself doesn’t bother me — the travel credit renders it very similar to the Preferred.). I think the additional benefits may be more than worth the extra expense.

That is why we moved everyone to the Sapphire Reserve — the additional benefits.

' data-src=

I’m definitely starting to think the same thing. Those extra benefits look like they outweigh the annual fee if you spend anything more than ~$500 on your card each year

' data-src=

I agree that that’s the way to evaluate it.

' data-src=

It’s my family’s top card. The unlimited Priority Pass guests and very easy to use $300 travel credit make it entirely worthwhile.

' data-src=

100% agree. The CSR is the primary card for both the wife & I. It’s extremely difficult to beat its suite of benefits & coverages.

Southwest Priority Card Benefits

The Southwest Priority card is the premium option of the 3 personal Southwest card options. Because of that, it offers the most benefits but also comes with the highest annual fee. When weighing the Southwest Priority card perks against the annual fee, you’ll discover that this card provides the most bang for your buck, so to speak, of all of the personal Southwest credit cards .

In fact, there are 2 Southwest Priority card benefits that are worth more than the annual fee alone. Let’s take a closer look at all of this card’s benefits so you can decide if it’s the right card for you.

One of the biggest benefits of the Southwest Priority card is the ability to earn lots of Rapid Rewards points. Here’s a look at how you can earn points with this card:

  • 3x points on Southwest Airlines purchases made directly with the airline
  • 2x points on Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partners
  • 2x points on local transit and commuting, including rideshares
  • 2x points on internet, cable, and phone services
  • 2x points on select streaming services
  • 1x points on all other purchases

Bottom Line: The Southwest Priority card may be the best option for most Southwest travelers since the benefits far outweigh the cost of the card’s annual fee.

One of the biggest differences between Southwest Airlines and everyone else is its boarding process . On Southwest Airlines, there aren’t any assigned seats. Instead, each passenger gets a boarding position which is based on a few factors including elite status and check-in time.

EarlyBird Check-In is a service that will automatically check you in for your Southwest flight so you don’t have to worry about it.

The other way you can ensure a better boarding position is by utilizing Upgraded Boarding which gets you a coveted A1 to A15 boarding position. With the Southwest Priority card, you’ll get 4 complimentary Upgraded Boardings per year.

These charges will be automatically refunded when you pay for them with your card:

Southwest Airlines Upgraded Boarding Credit

Keep in mind that Upgraded Boarding is available per segment, so if your itinerary has 2 flights, you’ll need 2 Upgraded Boardings. It’s also possible to upgrade a single segment on an itinerary.

Southwest Airlines Upgraded Boarding starts at $30 per flight segment, so this can be a very valuable benefit. It’s available for purchase beginning 24 hours before a flight. If Business Select seats (A1 to A15) are sold out, Upgraded Boarding won’t be available for purchase.

Bottom Line: Southwest Upgraded Boarding is one of the best ways to secure an A boarding position. The Southwest Priority card comes with 4 complimentary Upgraded Boardings per year.

The $75 annual travel credit that comes with the Southwest Priority card is incredibly easy to use and it doesn’t require any registration. The first $75 in Southwest Airlines charges on your card will be automatically reimbursed. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1 charge or multiple small charges.

Southwest Priorty card $75 credit

If you usually use Rapid Rewards points to book your flights, you’ll be pleased to know that the $5.60 taxes and fees charge does trigger the $75 credit.

After your card account anniversary, you’ll receive 7,500 bonus points . These points will be automatically applied to your account each year that your Southwest Priority card is renewed.

Since Southwest Rapid Rewards points have a value of ~1.3 cents each, this bonus is worth $97.50 .

Hot Tip: The value of the $75 annual credit plus 7,500 anniversary points is worth more than the cost of the annual fee ! These 2 benefits alone make the Southwest Priority card worth it for many travelers.

The Southwest Priority card offers benefits to those looking to earn Southwest elite status . For every $5,000 spent annually on the card, you’ll earn 1,500 tier qualifying points toward A-List and A-List Preferred status.

For this perk, “annual” doesn’t mean calendar year; instead, it’s based on your December statement date.

As a reminder, A-List status requires 35,000 tier qualifying points. In theory, you could earn that by spending $233,333 on the Southwest Priority card annually. While that’s not necessarily recommended, it’s great to be able to earn some extra tier qualifying points with as little as $10,000 in annual spending.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best deals in travel. It allows you to bring a companion on any and every Southwest flight for only the cost of taxes and fees ($5.60 one way for a domestic flight) for up to 2 years!

To earn the Southwest Companion Pass, you need to earn 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. However, Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cardholders get a 10,000-point boost each year toward Companion Pass qualification. These points aren’t redeemable, rather they act as a way to reduce the required number of points to earn a Companion Pass to 125,000 instead of 135,000.

10k Companion Pass points boost on Southwest Priority card

You can save 25% on inflight purchases including drinks and Wi-Fi by using the Southwest Priority card. The discount will come as a statement credit that should post to your account on the same day as the purchase. This discount is extended to any authorized users on the card as well.

Southwest Priority cardholders and authorized users are eligible for a complimentary 1-year subscription to DoorDash DashPass which comes with perks like a $0 delivery fee on restaurant orders and a 5% DoorDash credit on pick-up orders.

The complimentary DashPass membership needs to be activated by December 31, 2024, and your Southwest Priority card needs to be added to your DoorDash account as the default payment method.

When you pay for part or all of your travel (by air, bus, train, or cruise) with your Southwest Priority card, you’ll be eligible for 2 types of travel accident insurance with a benefit of up to $250,000 .

This insurance provides coverage for accidental death or dismemberment or a combined loss of speech, sight, or hearing during a trip. The cardholder and immediate family members are covered.

  • Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance : Covers losses when entering, exiting, or riding as a passenger on a common carrier including an airline, bus, train, or cruise ship.
  • 24-Hour Travel Accident Insurance : Covers losses starting on the day of departure (on a scheduled airline trip) and ending on the day of return.

To be eligible, the cardholder must submit a written claim within 20 days of the incident.

There are many credit cards that come with car rental insurance, and the Southwest Priority card is no exception. The coverage is secondary which means it acts as a supplement to any other insurance you may have. To be eligible, the entire car rental cost must be charged to your card and you must decline the car rental company’s insurance policy.

The cardmember plus any additional authorized drivers on the car rental agreement are covered.

Hot Tip: There are many credit cards that offer this benefit. Here is a full list of cards that come with car rental insurance .

If you check bags often enough, it’s likely you’ll be affected by a baggage delay at some point. The Southwest Priority card offers reimbursement for basic items like toiletries and clothing when your bags are delayed more than 6 hours by a common carrier (airline, bus, train, or cruise ship). This benefit has a maximum of $100 per day for up to 3 days.

In addition to the cardholder, the cardholder’s spouse or domestic partner, as well as immediate family are covered.

To be eligible, the common carrier fare must have been purchased with the Southwest Priority card or with rewards earned from the card. A claim must be filed within 20 days of the loss.

Southwest passenger checking in bag

The Southwest Priority card includes lost luggage reimbursement coverage for both the cardholder and immediate family members. If a common carrier (airline, bus, train, or cruise ship) damages or loses checked or carry-on luggage, you’re eligible for up to $3,000 per passenger .

The common carrier fare must have been purchased with the Southwest Priority card or with rewards earned from the card to be eligible for coverage. A claim must be filed within 20 days of the loss.

Access to roadside assistance, including services like towing and tire changes, is available through the Southwest Priority card by calling 800-847-2869. However, the card’s benefit doesn’t cover the cost of the service call .

The purchase protection plan that comes with the Southwest Priority card offers coverage of up to $500 per claim ($50,000 maximum per account) when a new purchase is damaged or stolen within 120 days. This benefit applies to the cardmember and any recipients of gifts purchased by the cardmember. To be eligible, a claim needs to be submitted within 90 days of the loss or theft.

The extended warranty benefit extends a U.S. manufacturer’s warranty for an additional year when the original warranty is 3 years or less. This applies to purchases made by the cardholder using the Southwest Priority card. Each claim has a maximum benefit of $10,000 ($50,000 maximum per account).

The Southwest Priority card doesn’t have foreign transaction fees, so go ahead and bring it along on your next international trip!

Hot Tip: Did you know that Southwest Airlines flies to many surprising international destinations in the Caribbean and Central America?

You’ll have access to 24/7 fraud monitoring that protects you against unauthorized purchases.

Zero Liability Protection means you won’t be responsible for unauthorized purchases on your account. To report a fraudulent charge, just call the number on the back of your card.

You’ll have access to Rapid Rewards Access Events with your Southwest Priority card. This is a collection of exclusive events that you can purchase using Rapid Rewards points.

Access to Chase Offers comes with any Chase card including the Southwest Priority card. These are card-linked offers that can save money on your everyday purchases. Each offer needs to be added to the card prior to making a purchase.

These can sometimes even include offers for discounts on Southwest Airlines.

Chase Offers on Southwest credit card

There are 5 Southwest credit cards — 3 consumer cards and 2 business cards. The Southwest Priority card is the top-tier personal co-branded Southwest card, which offers a comprehensive suite of benefits. When deciding whether or not this card is worth it, keep in mind there are 2 benefits that add up to offer a higher value than the annual fee. The 7,500 annual bonus points and $75 annual Southwest travel credit have a value of $172.50 which is more than the $149 annual fee on this card. Those benefits alone make the Southwest Priority card a great one to keep in your wallet if you’re a fan of Southwest Airlines.

Capital One Venture X vs. Amex Platinum welcome bonus

The Capital One Venture X has a current welcome bonus of 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 within the first three months from account opening. TPG values this bonus at $1,388.

priority pass travel insurance

Meanwhile, the Amex Platinum is currently offering 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 during your first six months of card membership. TPG values this bonus at $1,600. Also keep in mind that you could be targeted for a higher bonus through the CardMatch tool (CardMatch offers are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time).

Winner: Amex Platinum. Its welcome offer is worth over $200 more than the Venture X's current offer.

Capital One Venture X vs. Amex Platinum benefits

A standout benefit of both cards is the lounge access they offer. With the Venture X , you'll get access to Capital One , Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges. You'll get more extensive lounge access with the Amex Platinum , though. It gives you access to Centurion , Delta Sky Club (when flying Delta), Escape, Airspace, Lufthansa and other Global Lounge Collection partner lounges in addition to Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges.

With the Venture X, you'll also get a $300 credit for travel booked through Capital One Travel , as well as a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit and a generous guest allowance with your airport lounge access. If you're able to maximize these benefits, you'll easily offset the card's $395 annual fee , which is comparatively low for a premium travel credit card.

The Venture X also comes with some travel and purchase protections, which will grant you peace of mind even if you aren't able to take advantage of its monetary value.

Plus, you can add up to four authorized users to your account for no additional charge, which is especially valuable given that each authorized user has the same airport lounge access as the primary cardholder.

priority pass travel insurance

The Amex Platinum's benefits, on the other hand, are far more extensive. They include over $1,500 in available statement credits and comprehensive airport lounge access , as well as significant travel and purchase protections , including cellphone protection of up to $800 per claim with a $50 deductible (maximum of two claims per 12-month period).

The Platinum's list of benefits is arguably the best of any publicly available card, but it does come with a $695 annual fee , which is significantly higher than the Venture X. If you want to add authorized users to your account, it will cost you even more. You can add up to three authorized users to your account at a cost of $195 annually for each one.

Winner: Amex Platinum. Its lounge access and over $1,500 in available statement credits are hard to beat.

Earning rewards with the Venture X vs. Amex Platinum

The Venture X earns 10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar spent on flights booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases.

Meanwhile, the Amex Platinum earns 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year) and on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com. It earns 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

priority pass travel insurance

While the Venture X may offer more earning opportunities, keep in mind that TPG values Amex Membership Rewards at 2 cents each while Capital One miles are valued at a lower 1.85 cents each.

Winner: Venture X. Most people will earn more rewards with 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases than with the Amex Platinum's earning structure.

Redeeming rewards with the Venture X vs. Amex Platinum

With the Venture X , you can get maximum value from your miles by transferring them to any of Capital One's 18 travel partners , including British Airways Executive Club and Choice Privileges . Or, more simply, you can use your miles to book travel through Capital One Travel or redeem them as a statement credit for recent travel at a flat rate of 1 cent per mile .

You also have the option to redeem your Capital One miles for gift cards at a rate of 1 cent per mile or use them to pay with Amazon or PayPal at a rate of 0.8 cents per mile. Your least valuable option is to redeem your miles for cash back at a rate of 0.5 cents per mile, so we recommend avoiding this option if you can.

priority pass travel insurance

Similarly, with the Amex Platinum , you can get maximum value from your Amex Membership Rewards points by transferring them to any of Amex's 20 travel partners . You can also redeem your points for travel through AmexTravel.com, usually at a rate of 1 cent per point.

Lower-value redemption options include redeeming your points as a statement credit for eligible charges, using Pay with Points at various online merchants and redeeming your points for gift cards. You'll almost always get a value of less than 1 cent per point with these options, so again, we recommend opting for travel redemptions to get the most value from your points.

Winner: Amex Platinum. Membership Rewards points have more high-value options and are worth more than Capital One miles, according to TPG valuations.

Transferring rewards with the Venture X vs. Amex Platinum

Both Capital One and American Express allow you to transfer your rewards to valuable travel partners easily. In both instances, you can transfer your rewards to most travel partners at a 1:1 ratio. In most cases, your points will transfer instantly. Both programs also regularly offer transfer bonuses that allow you to get even more value from your rewards.

The two programs have several overlapping transfer partners, including some of our favorites like Air France-KLM Flying Blue , Avianca LifeMiles , British Airways Executive Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer . However, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to a larger number of valuable airline and hotel partners than Capital One, including ANA Mileage Club , Iberia Plus and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club . Plus, historically, American Express has offered more transfer bonuses than Capital One .

priority pass travel insurance

Still, Capital One has its own valuable partners that set it apart, including Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles and Virgin Red .

When transferring either type of reward, be sure to note the transfer times of each program to avoid losing your coveted award deal waiting for your transfer to complete.

Winner: Amex Platinum. You can transfer Membership Rewards to a higher number of valuable travel partners.

Should I get the Venture X or the Amex Platinum?

The Amex Platinum is a better choice for frequent flyers thanks to its extensive lounge access and bonus earning on airline purchases, but if your travels keep you on the ground, you'll likely prefer the lower annual fee and broader earning potential on the Venture X .

Beyond your travel goals, your spending habits will be a major factor in which card fits you better.

For instance, if you already subscribe to memberships like Walmart+ and can maximize most or all of the available statement credits , the Amex Platinum is a great choice for you.

If you travel regularly but want to earn more on your everyday purchases, the Venture X is probably a better fit. With it, you'll get substantial benefits like lounge access and a travel statement credit but with a much lower annual fee and broader earning opportunities.

priority pass travel insurance

Another thing to consider when choosing between these cards is how they'll fit with the other cards you already have in your wallet.

If you have the American Express® Gold Card , for instance, and earn 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on dining and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases per year), adding the Amex Platinum is a great complement if you want travel benefits and to earn bonus points on your flights.

However, if you don't have a card that earns bonus points on everyday purchases, the Venture X is a great way to fill that void in your card portfolio.

Bottom line

Both the Venture X and the Amex Platinum are great cards.

If you're looking for extensive airport lounge access as well as multiple statement credits and don't mind paying a higher annual fee, the Amex Platinum is the better card for you. If your main priorities are earning a flat rate on all your purchases and getting premium perks for a lower annual fee, the Venture X is your winner.

That said, both cards are solid options. No matter where you land, you'll be traveling like a pro in no time with either card.

Priority Pass partners with dozens of restaurants in airports around the world. At these partner restaurants, eligible Priority Pass Select members get a $28 credit toward food and beverage purchases per guest.

However, just because your travel rewards credit card offers a Priority Pass Select membership doesn't mean that you'll be able to get a free or discounted airport meal before or after your flight. That's because some credit card issuers have removed Priority Pass restaurants from their Priority Pass lounge benefit.

For those of us who appreciate a real meal before a flight — instead of just snacks from a lounge — let's focus on credit cards with Priority Pass restaurant benefits.

An overview of credit cards with Priority Pass restaurant benefits

Before we get into details below, here's an overview of the most popular travel rewards credit cards that provide Priority Pass restaurant access:

Credit cards that offer Priority Pass restaurant benefits

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card is perhaps the best-known travel rewards credit card that still offers Priority Pass restaurant benefits, though it is ending July 1, 2024. For now, the card's terms, Chase states that the Priority Pass Select membership that Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders receive "includes access to airport lounges, restaurants, cafes and markets."

Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders get up to two accompanying guests per visit at no additional cost. Additional guests cost $27 per guest per visit.

A Priority Pass Select membership is just one of the card's many travel benefits. Cardholders also get:

An annual $300 travel credit.

TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee statement credit.

Two complimentary years of Lyft Pink All Access.

Access to Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection

These are a few of the perks you will find among the card's slew of benefits.

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite credit card

The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite credit card offers perhaps the most unique and generous Priority Pass restaurant benefit of any card on the list.

Premium Rewards Elite cardholders get up to four complimentary Priority Pass Select memberships with restaurant access per account. Even better, Bank of America doesn't restrict how many guests each Priority Pass member can bring into a lounge or restaurant on each visit — and there's no cost associated with bringing guests into a lounge with you.

That indicates that cardholders get up to four unlimited Priority Pass Select memberships, each with unlimited guests.

If you have a large family, this Priority Pass Select membership can easily justify the card's $550 annual fee. And that's before you factor in the card's other travel benefits, which include:

TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee credit.

Up to $300 annually in airline incidental statement credits.

Up to $150 annually for purchases such as rideshare services.

Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard®

Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card

This little-known premium Emirates rewards card offers primary cardmembers and authorized users "unlimited visits for yourself as well as guests" — with no fee listed for guests over a set limit. That seems to indicate that there's no limit to the number of guests cardholders can bring into a Priority Pass lounge or restaurant with them.

In addition to this Priority Pass lounge benefit, Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard® cardholders get Emirates Skywards Gold tier membership for their first year plus 10,000 bonus Skywards miles each account anniversary. The card charges a $499 annual fee.

UBS Visa Infinite Card

UBS offers an unlimited Priority Pass Select membership with restaurants for cardholders of the UBS Visa Infinite Card and the UBS Visa Infinite Business Card.

Unfortunately, details such as guest access and Priority Pass benefits for authorized users are absent from the UBS website. So, it's unclear how many guests cardholders can bring into Priority Pass lounges or restaurants with them.

However, even without guest access, this card may be a good fit for luxury travelers. Cardholders get:

A $250 credit for qualifying air travel expenses.

Premium benefits at select hotels through the Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection.

VIP amenities at select Ritz-Carlton properties, Fairmont and Park Hyatt properties.

Plus, cardholders unlock a $500 annual credit by spending $25,000 in either the current or prior calendar year.

Use your credit card for Priority Pass restaurant meals

Using your Priority Pass membership at participating airport restaurants is a great way to get a full meal before or after your flight.

However, it's important to remember that some card issuers — such as American Express — don't include "non-lounge airport experiences" such as restaurants in their Priority Pass lounge benefits. That means it's important to check your card's terms before counting on this benefit.

Regardless of which card you have, you'll likely need to enroll with your bank before you can take advantage of this Priority Pass Select membership benefit. Also, keep in mind that Priority Pass doesn't cover gratuity on meals. So, remember to have cash on hand to tip your waitstaff.
