About The Book of Mormon on Broadway

Video & photos.

The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic go-getter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Elders Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected.

Know Before You Go

Composed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon is an old-style musical with a modern sensibility. This blockbuster show features several big song-and-dance numbers accompanied by some old-fashioned Broadway belting. An equal opportunity offender, the show playfully pokes fun at religion, sexuality, poverty and race, while inspiring an after-the-show discussion of religion in general.

"A spectacular, rather perfect Broadway musical not only grounded in a serious love and understanding of the traditions that make a Broadway musical great but also filled with love for the very flawed, mortal characters who populate this romp." Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum

"Parker and Stone have created one of the freshest original musicals in recent memory. It has tuneful songs, clever lyrics, winning characters, explosive laughs and disarmingly intimate moments. " The Hollywood Reporter David Rooney
"While The Book of Mormon packs plenty of blissful profanity, sacrilege and politically incorrect mischief, the defining quality of this hugely entertaining show is its sweetness." The Hollywood Reporter David Rooney

Big laughs and bawdy fun in ‘The Book of Mormon’ on tour at the National

Each musical number is more hilarious than the last, and every crude line or lewd joke is delivered with radiant joy and innocence.

One of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time has landed at The National Theatre with an outstanding opening night. The Book of Mormon ’s positive critical response over the years has garnered many subsequent national tours, and this uproarious production, directed by Jennifer Werner, continues that stellar reputation.

The Book of Mormon is a uniquely American musical about a uniquely American phenomenon: Mormonism. The fresh, original, and wickedly funny story of two Mormon missionaries who wind up in a remote village in Uganda is rife with raunchy comedy and farcical performances that make for an evening of hysterical fun. The beloved satire follows Elder Price and Elder Cunningham as they preach about Joseph Smith to African villagers who are more preoccupied with poverty, disease, and violent warlords than the possibility of eternal life as a Latter-day Saint. When the villagers finally begin to be swayed by the missionaries’ promises, things start to get even more wackier.

the book of mormon tour cast

Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, played by Sam McLellan and Sam Nackman, are a riotous duo. McLellan is delightful as the overconfident, egotistical Elder Price, who is disappointed that he’s been sent to Uganda for his mission instead of his favorite place on Earth (Orlando, Florida) but still determined to succeed in his quest for conversion. Nackman is a talented comedic actor and perfectly cast for the overzealous Elder Cunningham, who just wants to make his dad proud — and maybe become BFFs with Elder Price along the way.

The rest of the cast is equally as charming as the two leads. Keke Nesbitt plays Nabulungi, the first villager to become interested in the missionaries, with an earnest glee and dazzling enthusiasm. Jarret Martin hilariously plays a doctor who has “maggots in his scrotum” and isn’t afraid to sing it loud and proud. Some cast members, such as Trevor Dorner and Sean Casey Flanagan, swing between multiple roles with practiced ease, creating a sense of continuity and synchronicity in the story.

The set design by Scott Pask is a vital piece of this show, and each scene is crafted with immense care and detail. The stage is outlined by a white, gleaming Mormon temple that really does feel like it’s reaching up to the heavens. On stage, the cast and crew do an amazing job of changing scenes with what seems like the touch of a fairy godmother’s wand, effortlessly gliding the story between a suburban Salt Lake City, a tattered and dusty Ugandan village, a sunny, false Florida, and even the depths of hell. The versatility of the design is remarkable, with pieces that swivel quickly to transform the stage in mere seconds.

The joy of the costume design is all in the details, such as Jesus’ curly blond hair, reminiscent of a teenage girl before a school dance, and Elder McKinley’s little pink-flowered suitcase. These comical visual touches remind us of the absolute absurdity of this world and its spunky characters.

the book of mormon tour cast

Each musical number is more intensely hilarious than the last, not to mention filled with powerful vocals from the cast. Some of the most notable songs include “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream,” where Elder Price dances with a group of unsavory characters from history who have ended up in this spooky, sparkly underworld, and “Turn It Off,” in which the more experienced missionaries try to teach Elder Price and Elder Cunningham about the little Mormon trick of just “turning off” unsavory thoughts, of course in a flashy dance complete with sequined vests.

Running gags in the show provide harmonious fluidity from one scene to the next, although the raunchy nature of most means this show is definitely not for the kids — or for anyone easily offended. But every crude line or lewd joke is delivered with radiant joy and faux innocence that guarantees a gaggle of laughs. This production reminds us of the power of theater to bring us to tears — that is, tears of laughter. The Book of Mormon at The National Theatre is a complete joy that no one should miss.

Broadway in Columbus announces its 2024-25 season, including '& Juliet,' 'MJ the Musical'

Roman Banks as ‘MJ’ and cast of the national tour of “MJ: The Musical."

Musicals about the moonwalking King of Pop, a reimagined Shakespeare heroine, singer-songwriter Neil Diamond , a prematurely-old teenage girl and a high-flying boy who never grew up will tour Columbus next season.

Current Broadway hits such as “MJ the Musical,” “& Juliet,” “A Beautiful Noise” and “Kimberly Akimbo” will enliven PNC Broadway in Columbus’ 2024-2025 season.

“It’s something for everybody, a good mix of shows,” said Chad Whittington, president and CEO of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) , which presents the national tours.

“Variety defines this great season, with new products coming from Broadway, including five Columbus premieres and family favorites,” Whittington said.

The value of revivals

Rounding out the 2024-2025 subscription series is a touring-only revival of “ Peter Pan ,” an encore run of “ Hamilton ” and the recent first Broadway revival of “Funny Girl,” which catapulted Barbra Streisand to stardom playing a comic cut-up who imagines herself “the greatest star... by far.”

“It’s important to have revivals each season... an opportunity to see the great shows from the past — sometimes tweaked to be relevant — that reflect the evolution of our society and connect us with the deep history of Broadway,” Whittington said.

Jukebox hits and family favorites

Of the four newer musicals visiting Columbus for the first time, only “ Kimberly Akimbo ” boasts an original score, while “A Beautiful Noise,” “& Juliet” and “MJ The Musical” have “jukebox” scores compiled from older Top-40 songs and composer’s catalogs.

“Talking about jukebox musicals leading the series is difficult for purists to hear, but that’s where the audience is right now,” Whittington said.

Family favorites include “Peter Pan” and an encore run of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” a non-subscription option.

“We put ‘Peter Pan’ on the season specifically for families... For us, introducing new audiences to Broadway at a young age is important, and family shows give us the opportunity to do that,” Whittington said.

How Broadway matters

Five of the seven subscription shows are still on Broadway: “& Juliet, “A Beautiful Noise,” “Hamilton,” “MJ the Musical” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” the top 2023 Tony winner with five awards including best musical, book and score.

“There’s an awareness on social media when a show is a Broadway hit, but even more important is how long it runs. Shows lasting only a few months have a harder time doing well on tour,” Whittington said.

More: 'Jersey Boys,' 'Legally Blonde,' 'Nine' among 2024-25 Short North Stage lineup

Also returning as a non-subscription option: “The Book of Mormon,” approaching 5,000 performances on Broadway after virtually sweeping the 2011 Tony awards.

“We tend to bring back shows that have a long life and were hugely popular during their first runs,” Whittington said.

‘Some shows people see once, and that’s enough. These are shows people tell us, on our audience surveys, they want to see again,” he said.

What tours are set for fall?

Except where noted, all shows (*non-subscription) will be performed at the Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St.

• “MJ: The Musical” (Sept. 10-15): The dance-oriented musical pays tribute to Michael Jackson’s creativity and collaborative spirit. Conceived by Tony-winning director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (“An American in Paris”), and Pulitzer-winner Lynn Nottage (“Ruined,” “Sweat”), the show centers on the making of Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous World” tour.\

‘’’MJ’ is more than just about Jackson’s music. It has great music and great dancing, but also a really strong story,” Whittington said.

• “The Book of Mormon” (*Oct. 8-13):   Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (“South Park”) and Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”), the Tony-winning musical comedy returns for its fourth run after 2014, 2016 and 2018. The story follows a naïve pair of Mormon missionaries from Utah to Uganda as their religious beliefs are tested.

Family shows set for winter

• “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Dec. 3-8, Palace Theatre, 34 W. Broad St.): The one-act holiday musical, which had a 2015 run here, brings to life the cartoonish world of Dr. Seuss in adapting the book and animated 1966 TV special about the green-hued Grinch’s scheme to spoil the holiday for Whoville residents.

• “Peter Pan” (Jan. 14-19): Newly adapted by playwright Larissa FastHorse, the 1954 musical is based on J.M. Barrie’s play about Peter Pan and sidekick Tinker Bell taking the Darling children on a magical journey to Neverland. Among the iconic songs: “I’m Flying” and “I Won’t Grow Up.”

Strong women enhance 2025 season

• “& Juliet” (Feb. 18-23): Nominated for nine 2023 Tony awards, the musical by Emmy-winning writer David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”) imagines Juliet getting a second chance.

“What if Juliet decides that losing Romeo doesn’t mean she has to lose her life? Shakespeare’s play is flipped on its head in this story about finding your way,” Whittington said.

The score highlights songwriter/producer Max Martin’s Top-40 songs, including “Blow,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” “Domino,” “One More Try,” “Oops!... I Did It Again” and “Roar.”

“You’ll recognize hit after hit, which reflects the breadth of singers Martin has written for,” Whittington said.

More: Jon Batiste coming to Columbus to participate in a musical residency with ProMusica

• “Funny Girl” (March 25-30): With Harvey Fierstein (“La Cage aux Folles”) updating the book for the first Broadway revival, the musical charts the life of Fanny Brice, whose knack for comedy and chutzpah propelled her to Ziegfeld Follies stardom. Jule Styne and Bob Merrill’s score includes “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star” and “People.”

What completes the season?

• “A Beautiful Noise” (April 22-27, 2025): Created with Neil Diamond, the bio-musical charts Diamond’s rise from a Brooklyn kid to a chart-topping pop-rock singer-songwriter who sold 120 million albums.

Among the songs: “America,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Hello Again,” “Kentucky Woman,” “Solitary Man” and “Sweet Caroline.”

• “Kimberly Akimbo” (June 3-8, 2025): Author-lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire (“Shrek”) and composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”) based the coming-of-age musical on Lindsay-Abaire’s play of the same title about the struggle for happiness of a 16-year-old girl with a rare genetic condition prematurely aging her.

“It’s about the angst and complications for kids who might not fit in... You fall in love with all the kids in this really endearing show, which appeals to theater-lovers with a new score and a mostly-teenage cast,” Whittington said.

• “Hamilton” (July 8-20, 2025): Lin Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer-winning musical drama, returning here for its third multi-week run after 2019 and 2022, focuses on Alexander Hamilton, George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War.

C OLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — “Hamilton” and “The Book of Mormon” are returning to the Ohio Theatre as part of Broadway in Columbus’ 2024-25 season lineup, which will also feature the central Ohio premiere of a jukebox musical based on the life of Neil Diamond.

2024-25 Season Shows

‘MJ’ | Ohio Theatre from Sept. 10 to 15

Michael Jackson’s artistry comes to Columbus with “MJ,” a jukebox musical that follows the making of Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous World” tour. MJ goes beyond the singular moves and signature sound of the star, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status.

‘Peter Pan’ | Ohio Theatre from Jan. 14 to 19, 2025

This high-flying musical has been captivating audiences for nearly 70 years, and is now being brought back to life in a new adaptation. The production features the musical’s classic songs like “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow” and “I Wont’ Grow Up.”

“It’s always important to us to have a family-friendly show in the season, this year it’s ‘Peter Pan,'” said Lisa Minken, the Broadway in Columbus marketing manager. “We love creating that next generation of Broadway lovers. It’s a musical a lot of grew up with and now we can take our kids, our nieces and nephews and give them that same magical experience.”

‘& Juliet’ | Ohio Theatre from Feb. 18 to 23, 2025

Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” this new musical asks: what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo? Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including “Since U Been Gone‚” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life‚” “That’s The Way It Is,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

“More people will know the music to this show than what they realize, it’s the songbook of Max Martin, who has written a ton of hits for Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears,” said Minken. “It’s a really fun story because it tells the story of Juliet if she didn’t fall for Romeo and if she didn’t decide to end her life, what he life would look like then. It’s so fun.”

‘Funny Girl’ | Ohio Theatre from March 25 to 30, 2025

The Broadway revival features iconic songs, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the

Greatest Star,” and “People.” This bittersweet comedy is the story of Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage. Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened — she became one of the most beloved performers in history.

‘A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical’ | Ohio Theatre from April 22 to 27, 2025

Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, “A Beautiful Noise” is the true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon. With 120 million albums sold, a catalogue of classics like “America,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Sweet Caroline,” an induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, Neil Diamond’s story was made to shine on Broadway.

“We also have the Neil Diamond musical, which is some of my parents’, aunts’ and uncles’ favorite music,” said Minken. “How can you go wrong with some of his songs? “Sweet Caroline,” how could you not sing and do the chants with it?”

‘Kimberly Akimbo’ | Ohio Theatre from June 3 to 8, 2025

‘Kimberly Akimbo’ is the winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Kimberly is about to turn 16 and recently moved with her family to a new town in suburban New Jersey. She’s forced to navigate family dysfunction, a rare genetic condition, her first crush and possible felony charges.

“For the Broadway purists we have the 2023 Tony Award winner ‘Kimberly Akimbo,’ which is just a beautiful piece of theatre,” said Minken.

‘Hamilton’ | Ohio Theatre from July 8 to 20, 2025

Based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography and set to a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, ‘Hamilton’ has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. In addition to its 11 Tony Awards, it has won Grammy and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.

“We’re so excited to have our third engagement of ‘Hamilton’ back in Columbus,” said Minken. “It’s a show that so many people know and love and we are so happy to have it back.”

2024-25 Season Options

A new SoCal show hopes to tap the surprisingly big business of two-actor musicals

Livvy Marcus and Alex Finke in "Ride" at the Old Globe.

“Ride” recounts the epic journey of Annie Londonderry, the first woman to bicycle around the world. Opening Friday at the Old Globe in San Diego, the ambitious musical features six characters, spans numerous years and traverses multiple countries — all with just two actors.

It might seem a surprising choice to stage a globe-trotting, 19th-century-set bio-musical with just a pair of performers. But for “Ride,” as for an increasing number of regional stage productions across the country, necessity is the mother of invention — and for most theater companies, already strained by the COVID-19 pandemic and facing tightened budgets, the main necessities are “sell more tickets” and “lower costs.”

“We’ve always been resolute that this is how it has to be,” Freya Catrin Smith, who co-created “Ride” with Jack Williams, tells The Times. “As newer writers, you want to serve the work and the idea, but at the same time, you now have to have this awareness about what producers might want to take a risk on. And the reality is, they’re going to be way more likely to take a risk on something with fewer actors and fewer costs.”

Musicals with such small casts are potentially big business, in part because it can be easier to recoup their streamlined production costs compared with a traditional stage extravaganza, with savings on actors’ salaries, costumes, sets, makeup and more. “Hit musicals can come in all different sizes,” says theater historian and producer Jennifer Ashley Tepper. “And generally, you might be able to make their capitalizations lower with smaller musicals — a number of which do well for years in licensing for regional theaters and school performances.”

Producers are prioritizing these considerations since the pandemic shutdowns, as theaters grapple with unstable audience attendance and soaring costs due to inflation. For example, “The Last Five Years” has remained “perennially popular” over the 20-plus years that Music Theatre International has licensed the Jason Robert Brown musical, but requests notably increased in 2021, according to MTI director of marketing Jason Cocovinis, as “the show was a great, safe option for theaters to produce because of its small cast size and minimal set requirements.”

‘The Wiz’ revival now in L.A. is a ‘risk.’ It could also change how Broadway does business

Musicals have come to follow a Broadway run with a national tour. ‘The Wiz,’ starting Tuesday at the Pantages, is doing the opposite — and the strategy is paying off.

Feb. 13, 2024

"Ride" book writer and composer-lyricist Freya Catrin Smith, composer-lyricist Jack Williams and director Sarah Meadows.

That “Ride” is a two-actor musical is actually a strategic expansion. Smith and Williams, who met as preteens and began writing musicals together after college, first conceived “Ride” in 2019 as a solo show, since Londonderry’s cycling was mostly a solitary endeavor. But extensive research provided by her great-grandnephew, author and journalist Peter Zheutlin, shifted their storytelling needs.

“The more we learned about Annie, the more we realized she’s quite a tricky, knotty and flawed character, with this interesting backstory that she tried to hide a lot of the time by entertaining and deflecting,” Smith says of Londonderry, a Jewish Latvian immigrant in Boston who learned to ride a bicycle only days before departing on her journey and changed her last name for a cycling sponsorship. “She would never reveal the other sides of herself voluntarily, so we needed somebody else to push her buttons, and lean into that tension of who she was versus who she said she was.”

“Ride” largely takes place in the meeting room of a major newspaper, to which Londonderry, now an international sports star and feminist icon, is pitching herself as their next must-read columnist. Throughout the presentation to the unseen executives, Londonderry vividly recalls her record-breaking trek with the help of Martha Smith, the paper’s sheepish (and fictional) secretary, who plays key figures in Londonderry’s anecdotes: the men betting against her endeavor, the French customs agent who becomes a friend, the intriguing man who forces her to face her past.

“We could’ve had different actors playing each of these characters, but by having Martha play all of them and say things as other people that she wouldn’t be able to say to Annie herself, she experiences her own growth,” Williams explains. “I think most producers can tell when you’re sacrificing the story for [cost-saving] reasons, but we feel this is the best vehicle to tell Annie’s story.”

Beyond the creative challenges, such productions can also be a tougher ticket to sell, undermining the cost savings on the production end. But it doesn’t help to run away from the form, says Tepper: “Sometimes marketing tries to hide it a little bit because some audiences have preconceived notions about two-person musicals, that it’s not going to be as dynamic of an evening.”

For the musical’s U.S. debut, “Ride’s” creative team is set on presenting a spectacle — whimsical bicycle sequences, intricate harmonies, lush orchestrations, fantastical location changes — alongside the piece’s intimacy.

“It’s a two-actor musical, but it’s massive, so yeah, the money’s gone elsewhere,” says director Sarah Meadows, who also helmed the U.K. runs. “But any theater that’s good is really based on the strength of the characters and their relationships. Musicals can have as many ensembles kicking their legs and doing amazing dancing [as they like], and that’s impressive, but do we leave feeling like we’ve learned anything? Do those characters stay in our minds forever because we were so moved?

“The most surprising thing about this show is the fact that both of these women are written with such detail and depth,” she continues. “And because we don’t have to give attention to choreographing huge numbers or the other to-dos of bigger musicals, we can really focus on these two characters and build that strong emotional connection with the audience.”

This two-actor musical can be strenuous to execute too: In “Ride’s” case, each performer only leaves the stage for about a minute total in the 90-minute piece.

“You’re hyper-aware of the entire stage, you’re problem-solving in real time when things go wrong,” says Alex Finke, who portrays Londonderry opposite Livvy Marcus as Martha. “You have to be consistent not only for yourself, but for your scene partner, because their show depends on you in every aspect. It’s simultaneously challenging and fulfilling to be so dependent on only one other person.”

Hollywood made friendship another unrealistic ideal. A Broadway hit finally smacks it down

Movies and TV shows have fetishized close friendship to the point that the real, often fraught rhythms of such relationships have been lost. Not so in ‘Merrily We Roll Along.’

Smith and Williams are certainly devotees of the small musical’s artistic possibilities: The 2021 winners of Adam Lenson and Katy Lipson’s chamber musical prize for pieces featuring five actors or less, the pair are writing another two-actor musical, as well as a five-actor musical about self-taught mathematician Sophie Germain and a four-actor musical about “Little Women” author Louisa May Alcott . But they’re far from alone in the warm embrace.

When “Gutenberg! The Musical!” reunited “Book of Mormon” breakouts Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad on Broadway last fall, ticket sales were initially soft, despite a marketing campaign that featured clever merchandise and photo shoots . But “word of mouth was so strong, because everyone was in awe of what Josh and Andrew were doing, playing thousands of characters without leaving the stage,” says producer Bee Carrozzini. “It felt like a premium Broadway experience while also being so completely unlike anything else that was out there.”

The result — a 20-week run that broke box office records before ending in January — didn’t just recoup its initial investment. According to producer Kristin Caskey, it also sparked a resurgence of licensing requests to writers Scott Brown and Anthony King, despite the fact that “Gutenberg!” was initially developed nearly 20 years ago.

Two-actor musicals are still relatively rare, and only a fraction of those are penned for both roles to be played by women. But an indisputable Broadway hit has a way of changing perceptions, and newer shows like “Ride,” which runs through April 28, can only help cement the form’s post-COVID rise.

“I think it’s a testament to those two people,” says Aubrey Matalon, who understudies both “Ride” roles. “And as an audience member, it’s really exciting — like, holy s—, these people must be so talented to be doing so much. We’re witnessing some masterful work.”
