Parents need to know that The Incredible Journey is a heartwarming, 1963 Disney live-action movie -- based on Sheila Burnford's novel -- with positive messages around friendship and perseverance. Positive Messages

Friendship, teamwork, perseverance, and courage are strong themes. The relationship between the cat and dogs -- despite being different animals and breeds -- has positive messages of inclusiveness and empathy. The kindness of strangers. The love and bond between pets and their owners.

Positive Role Models

The three animals all look out for each other, helping each other when they are in need. The family who the animals belong to have plenty of love and affection for them. Most of the other humans they come into contact with are kind and generous. But some take a dislike to them and aggressively chase them away.

Violence & Scariness

Some animals are shot at with guns -- although none of them are hit, it is enough to scare the animals away. A duck hunt sees a duck being shot dead in the sky and a dog retrieve it. There are some aggressive scenes between animals. A cat hisses and claws at a bear when protecting a dog. The cat is later chased by a lynx before a gunshot scares the big cat away. Spoiler alert: A cat falls into a river and is washed away, presumably to its death -- it later emerges that it has survived. The animals constantly face the threat of starvation. In an effort to find some food, a cat catches a fish and a dog catches a rabbit -- the latter is seen lifeless between the dog's jaws. After trying to catch a porcupine, a dog ends up with the porcupine's spikes in its face, causing much distress.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Toward the end of the movie, a character is seen smoking a pipe and another a cigarette. Another character is seen rolling up a cigarette.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Incredible Journey is a heartwarming, 1963 Disney live-action movie -- based on Sheila Burnford's novel -- with positive messages around friendship and perseverance. It was later remade in 1993 as Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey . The movie centers around a cat and two dogs as they travel across the Canadian wilderness in search of home. As opposed to the 1993 remake, the animals are non-speaking, but they do encounter humans along the way, and there is a touching narration throughout. There are some moments of peril that may trouble younger viewers -- with the trio facing the constant threat of starvation and other animals. Spoiler alert: In the movie's most distressing scene, Tao, a Siamese cat, is swept into a river and is presumed dead -- but he later emerges alive. Animals are shot at but never hit, apart from a duck hunting scene in which a duck is shot dead from the sky. Some aggression is seen between different animals including when a bear tries to attack Bodger, an English bull terrier, and a lynx chases Tao. Luath, a Labrador retriever, ends up with porcupine spikes in his face, causing him much distress. There is some smoking toward the end of the movie, befitting the time period. What's the Story?

THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY tells the remarkable story of three pets -- a cat and two dogs -- as they try to find their way home across the Canadian wilderness. While traveling the hundreds of miles, the trio encounter kind -- and not so kind -- strangers, a protective bear, an aggressive lynx, and a spiky porcupine. Can they defy the odds and make it back to the family that loves them?

Is It Any Good?

Made in 1963, this heartfelt Disney movie remains a joyous celebration of friendship and courage played through the eyes of a cat and two dogs. This is a movie that transports you to a more innocent time, championing the importance of friendship and looking out for one another. With CGI a decade away from first being seen in a movie, The Incredible Journey is impressively choreographed. The action among the animals often resembles a nature documentary rather than a family movie.

Comparisons will naturally be made to 1993's Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey , which opted to give voices to its furry stars. But by relying on just the natural behavior of the animals, the original arguably sucks you in more than the remake. Some of the acting of the human characters is at times wooden and jars the natural flow of the animal's adventure. But Rex Allen 's narration is a soothing accompaniment to a feel-good movie, as told through a Siamese cat, an English bull terrier, and a Labrador retriever.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the friendships depicted in The Incredible Journey . What examples can you give of Tao, Bodger, and Luath helping each other? The trio are all different species and breeds, with different personalities, but this doesn't impact their friendship. Why do you think that is? How do your relationships with your friends compare?

Courage , perseverance , and teamwork all play a huge part in the movie. Why are these such important character strengths?

Did any of the scenes upset you? If so, which ones?

Why are pets so important to us? What can they teach us about life?

How did this movie compare to the 1993 remake, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey ? Which did you prefer and why?

The Hunter family receive a telegram detailing that the father, James, has been offered a visiting fellowship at Oxford University in England. However, their two children, Peter and Elizabeth worry about what is to be done with their two dogs, Luath the young Labrador Retriever and Bodger the elderly English Bull Terrier, along with their Siamese cat Tao, while they are away. Family friend John Longridge offers to have the animals stay with him, so that is what is arranged.

After a few days of having the animals in his care John leaves for the opening day of duck hunting season; he leaves his housekeeper, Mrs. Oakes and her husband, Bert to look after his house and the animals during his absence. Soon after John drives away, Luath hears the calls of wild geese overhead, returning home. This makes him want to do the same, so he starts off down the road, and Tao and Bodger soon follow after him. Later, Mrs. Oakes arrives at John's house expecting to see the animals, but can't find them. Then she finds half of a note that John had written that appears to imply that he took the animals with him on the trip (however, the other half of it was accidentally knocked into the fireplace by the cat, but Mrs. Oakes doesn't realize this).

Now well on their way home, the animals stop at a river to have a drink, but have to hide from a passing truck in case they are recognized. After that, they continue on. By the next morning, old Bodger is very tired and is beginning to slow down, so the animals stop for a rest in a clearing and wait for Bodger to regain his strength. Tao goes off into the brush to hunt a partridge while the old dog rests. Soon, two bear cubs happen upon Bodger and investigate him, but then their mother arrives on the scene. The mother bear thinks Bodger has been hurting her cubs and attacks him; the cat witnesses this and in turn attacks her in trying to protect his friend. However, Tao eventually backs up, frightened. Finally, Luath sees the bear and starts barking furiously; this, combined with the yowling, spitting cat, is enough to cause the mother bear to back down and run away.

After a whole week of traveling, the animals adapt to traveling after dark so that there is less chance of someone seeing them. They cut through an old saw mill, but are shot at after Bodger, rather foolishly, steals an old bone from a cookhouse's rubbish bin. They escape unharmed, although Bodger's dignity is given a serious blow. After ten days, while Bodger is resting, he hears the singing of a hermit, named Jeremy.

The eccentric old man takes the animals to his hut, where he makes a stew for them to eat. The dogs don't really take to the stew and Tao is more interested in stalking Jeremy's pet crow, but they don't show that they aren't interested. After a while they decide to leave and continue their journey. Many miles along, the animals come to a wide river, which they realize they have no choice but to cross. Luath and Bodger make it across easily, but Tao prefers not to get wet so he finds a dam to cross. However, when he reaches a large gap, he tries to jump over it but falls into the water. Luath tries to rescue him, but is too slow to keep up and loses him.

After trying to console one another, Bodger and Luath decide to press on without their friend. However, many miles downriver, a young girl named Helvi discovers Tao, soaking wet, barely alive, and half-starved, by the side of the water. She and her parents proceed to take Tao into their care and nurse him back to health over a number of days. One night, after recovering fully, the cat decides to leave the family and get back to the dogs.

Tao takes his time in traveling, now that he is alone. But, as he journeys deeper into the forest he discovers that he is being quietly stalked by a hungry lynx. The lynx attacks Tao and chases him up a tree, but he escapes. Then, the lynx corners Tao in a log, but is driven off by the arrival of a young boy with a rifle, allowing the cat to press on.

Not long after that, Luath and Bodger hear Tao calling. They immediately recognize their friend and the threesome are joyfully reunited. Together once again, the animals set off in search of food. Luath spies a porcupine, but gets too close to it, leaving him with quills stuck in his muzzle. Soon, while soothing his pain at a river, Luath meets hunter James MacKenzie, who takes pity on the young Labrador and brings him back to his house for treatment. When he arrives, he discovers that his wife Nell has found Bodger. The cat hides on a wood pile outside the house, watching and waiting and unnoticed by James or Nell. James removes the quills from Luath's muzzle (despite initially being on the receiving end of Bodger's protective instincts over the young dog) and that night, he locks the dogs in his barn, planning to ask around and find out who they belong to. Tao then rejoins his friends.

Meanwhile, John arrives home and it is discovered that the animals have disappeared. After some initial confusion as to why, the humans deduce that Luath has taken them home. John telephones the various ranger stations around the Ironmouth Range area, but they all say they will get in touch with him the following day. Later, the Hunters arrive home; John lets them know what's happened and Peter is quick to realize that an older dog such as Bodger most likely wouldn't have the strength to complete a journey so long, but Elizabeth remains firmly convinced that Tao will, sooner or later, return home. The animals, meanwhile, escape from the barn and the humans realize where they are and that they have only 40 miles left to go; this leads the humans to believe that if they've managed to get this far, they just may be able to make it all the way home.

On Peter's birthday soon afterwards, John gets Peter a registration paper from the Kenmore kennel, who are holding another Bull Terrier puppy in his name. All of a sudden, Elizabeth hears a dog barking in the distance and becomes immediately convinced that it must be Luath. Despite initial reservations, James whistles to the dog to see if Elizabeth is right; moments later they see Luath charging across the heathland ahead and barking, overjoyed to have finally returned home. A few seconds afterwards, Tao follows on and also arrives home safely.

Sadly, Peter is convinced that Bodger wasn't able to make the journey because he was too old, but is happy to see Tao and Luath again. Just then, Peter suddenly spots a white shape on the horizon, which he soon realizes is, in fact, Bodger, coming as quickly as he possibly can. The boy and the old dog are ecstatic to be reunited once again. The cat and Labrador join Bodger and Peter in their frolicking and all is well as the three very brave animals finally complete their incredible journey.

In 1993 , Disney made a new version of the film, entitled Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey . Featuring the voices of Don Ameche, Sally Field , and Michael J. Fox , the film keeps the same basic story line, but adds a subplot in which the kids are dealing with a new step-family. All three pets are renamed, the original breeds are switched, the Bull Terrier is replaced with an American Bulldog, the gender of the cat switched, and the ages of the original Labrador and Bull Terrier are switched. It also has vocalizations of the animals' thoughts and communications with each other.

It is the beginning of an Indian summer in northwest Ontario at the outset of the story. The writer John Longridge has assumed care of the Hunter family’s beloved pets: the elderly bull terrier Bodger , the sassy Siamese cat Tao , and the young and ever-loyal golden labrador Luath . The Hunters are longtime friends of Longridge, who also is the Hunter children’s godfather. 12-year-old Peter has had Bodger since he was only a year old, and the two share an inimitable bond. Tao belongs to his younger sister Elizabeth, and Luath is James Hunter’s steadfast hunting companion. The Hunters have gone on a trip to England for a temporary academic job that James has accepted there. When Longridge heard that the family planned to board their beloved animals, he volunteered to care for them in their absence. He has been housing the animals in his Ontario forest cabin, which he occasionally lives in while completing his manuscripts.

Longridge also loves the Hunter animals very much. Bodger has warmed to him quite naturally, as being a companion to humans is the dog’s greatest love. Tao is aloof yet comfortable and occasionally affectionate with Longridge. Luath is respectful and well-mannered but saves all of his true loyalty for his master, James.

Longridge is good friends with his (long-distance) neighbors the Oakes. Mrs. Oakes sees to his domestic needs when he stays in his cabin. He has arranged for her to care for the animals while he embarks on a canoe hunting expedition. The night before his departure, he composes a two-page letter to Mrs. Oakes. In it, he tells her that he will be taking the animals out for a walk the next morning, and then bringing them back in afterwards, before he sets out on his journey. However, during the night, Tao runs across Longridge’s desk and upsets the letter—sending the second page into the fireplace, where all but Longridge’s signature is lost to the flames.

The next day, when Mrs. Oakes arrives, she finds only the first page of Longridge’s letter, which makes it ambiguously appear that he has taken the animals with him on his canoeing hunting trip. The animals are not in the house. Mrs. Oakes frets over this, as she was eager to spend time with Bodger, especially, and is a bit concerned about the practical elements of bringing them all on a canoeing expedition. She defers to what she believes is Longridge’s judgment.

Unbeknownst to all the humans, Luath has led his two companions on a journey westward and toward their home. The animals have naturally fallen into a formation that they will adopt for many hundreds of miles: Luath stays by Bodger’s left side, as the elder dog is deaf in his left ear, and Tao trails them while indulging his own curiosities along the trail.

The animals each tap into their ancestral instincts during their journey. Tao is the wildest in the trio—he is able to effortlessly hunt and progress through the forest fearlessly. Bodger has fighting instincts, but his advanced age renders him a fragile and fitful traveler. Luath is not a killer by nature, and has trouble catching prey, but it is his internal compass westward and homebound that leads the way.

The animals encounter a number of high-stakes difficulties during their journey. One day, a bear cub takes an interest in Bodger and slashes him across the back. Tao quickly comes to her friend’s aid, attacking the cub’s eyes with his razor-sharp claws. When Luath comes bounding onto the scene, the mother bear and her cub retreat.

On another occasion, Tao is overtaken by an avalanche of timber when a beaver dam collapses while he is trying to cross a river. The cat is knocked unconscious and almost drowns but is fortuitously rescued by a young Finnish girl named Helvi Nurmi. Water blocks up the cat’s ears and renders him deaf for three days. Helvi and her family nurse Tao back to health, and the cat regains his hearing before setting back out into the wilderness and re-joining his canine companions.

The three animals also happen upon an elderly man with a faltering grip on reality. He mistakes the animals for humans and tries to treat them to a meal in his cabin before seeing them out.

Luath also incurs the wrath of a porcupine that he unsuccessfully tries to hunt and is forced to continue the journey with three quills lodged in his face. The wounds quickly become infected and extremely painful.

Bodger and Luath are later taken in by a kindly couple named the Mackenzies. Empty nesters who live in the wilderness, they have had many family pets throughout the years and intimately know the deep bonds that can form between domestic pets and their human masters. When the ever-loving Bodger turns up on their doorstep, later followed by a more cautious Luath, they immediately take the animals in and begin inquiring in their township about the peculiar trio’s presence in the wilderness. They also see Luath’s failing health, extract the quills immediately, and feed him as much as possible. Although they are intent on keeping the dogs, they also can see that they are on a very purposeful and undeterrable journey. Tao never makes himself known to the Mackenzies. Instead, he unlocks the latch to the barn where the couple begins keeping the dogs. A after a few days, the animals have headed back out into the wilderness and on their way.

By now, word of mouth from the various people who have encountered the animal trio has spread, and Oakes and Longridge have cobbled together the pieces of the puzzle to determine that the animals are headed westward and toward their home. They have been able to speak via telephone to several of the people that the animals have encountered. They also assume that the animals are dead. By looking at a map, they are able to pinpoint the animals’ journey with good accuracy, and they also see that they are headed toward the treacherous Ironmouth Mountain Range—just as the Indian summer is ending and a cruel winter approaches.

A few weeks pass, and Longridge has informed the Hunters of the unfortunate turn of events with their pets. The Hunters have returned from their trip, each family member full of longing and anticipation for their reunion with their beloved pet. Elizabeth has even purchased a new red leather collar for Tao. The Hunters are heartbroken to learn the news, and as time goes on, Elizabeth becomes the lone holdout in the family—she is utterly convinced that the animals will return to them, safe and sound.

The Hunters and Longridge go on a trip to the Hunters’ summer cottage. Elizabeth is hesitant to go, as she worries that Tao and the others may return home while they are gone. Longridge shows her the map of the animals’ route and assures her that the Hunter summer cottage lies on it. This convinces Elizabeth to go, but Longridge is afraid that her determined optimism will soon be proven wrong. All of the humans are devastated by the loss of the animals, but they try their best to enjoy their trip. Peter is especially bereft, as he shares a deep bond with the dog he has treasured as his companion for his whole life. He is convinced that Bodger is dead.

Then, on the last August day of their trip and Peter’s birthday, while they are on a walk in the forest, Emily hears a dog barking. She listens closely and immediately identifies the bark as Luath’s. No one else believes her—until Tao comes bounding out of the forest. The overjoyed cat is enclosed in a warm embrace by Elizabeth. Soon enough, Luath also emerges from the forest for an emotional reunion with James.

Peter watches the scene quietly, and then tells everyone that he is going to circle back on the trail to try to capture a photograph of a whisky-jack. He is clearly saddened by Bodger’s absence. Longridge decides to join him in order to keep an eye on him. Then, Bodger emerges from the forest and reunites with his master. This is the greatest birthday present Peter has ever received. The story ends on an image of Longridge making his way down the trail. He is joined by Tao on his walk in the spirit of intimate friendship.

Incredible Train Journeys You Can Afford

Posted: July 10, 2023 | Last updated: July 10, 2023

Slow and relaxing, train travel is one of the best ways of getting around if you have the time to spare. Some of the most breathtaking views in the world can be enjoyed from behind a train window and you don't necessarily have to shell out the big bucks for an epic journey. Here we take a look at the world's most scenic train journeys that you won't have to splash out on.

Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand

Taking in some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes, the TranzAlpine route from Christchurch to Greymouth travels through some of the most incredible sights on the South Island. The train crosses Canterbury Plains and travels alongside the Waimakariri River before ascending into the mountains where it crosses the Staircase Viaduct. One-way fares start from $117 and all the seats line up with the huge panoramic windows and roof skylights.

Perhaps one of the most stunning features along the TranzAlpine's route is traversing the snow-capped mountains of Arthur's Pass National Park. The scenery then quickly turns subtropical as the train continues its journey through the west coast's rainforests and one of the best experiences on the train is stepping out on the open-air viewing car.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK

Dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, the West Highland Line runs from the Scottish city of Glasgow to Fort William before continuing its journey towards the port of Mallaig. The journey traverses the Scottish Highlands' epic landscape and passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. After a brief stop in Fort William, the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct – the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there's the The Jacobite steam train – it's the one used in the movies. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. An adult return ticket costs $63. Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains run every day and one-way off-peak fare is around $38.

Metal Detectorists Unearth Tiny Bronze Portrait of Alexander the Great in Denmark

Researchers think the 1,800-year-old artifact could be linked to a Roman emperor who was “obsessed” with the Macedonian conqueror

Alexander disc

A one-inch bronze portrait of Alexander the Great dating to around 200 C.E. has been unearthed on an island in Denmark.

Two metal detectorists, Finn Ibsen and Lars Danielsen, were searching a field outside of Ringsted, a city on the island of Zealand, when Ibsen came across the unusual object.

“I stand and jump on the spot and … wave Lars over,” Ibsen recalls to Kristoffer Koch of the Danish news outlet TV2 Øst , per Google Translate. “He comes running, and we can see that it is unique. It is a face.”

The friends handed the portrait over to Denmark’s Museum West Zealand . Archaeologists aren’t certain about the small disc’s function, but they say it could have been a decoration attached to a shield or sword belt.

Freerk Oldenburger , an archaeologist at the museum, tells Live Science ’s Jennifer Nalewicki that the disc is “almost identical” to a silver artifact found several years ago in Jutland, Denmark.

“It’s quite a remarkable piece,” he says. “When it showed up on my desk, I nearly fell out of my chair because it’s almost the exact same portrait as the other, but this one is a little more coarse and is made of cast bronze and not gilded silver.”

Oldenburger called the metal detectorists and explained what he’d pieced together. Ibsen was thrilled to hear more about his discovery. As he tells TV2 Øst, “Being taken 2,000 years back in time gives a huge rush.”

Alexander the Great was an ancient Macedonian king who ruled in the fourth century B.C.E. His empire was one of the largest in the ancient world, spanning multiple continents and stretching from Greece and Egypt to India. According to a statement from Museum West Zealand, researchers recognized the ruler’s visage from the figure’s signature wavy hair and decorative crown of twisted ram horns.

The metal disc was made some 500 years after Alexander’s reign, and researchers speculate that it may be linked to the Roman Empire. According to the museum, Alexander was a “great role model” for Roman leaders—and a particularly influential figure for the emperor Caracalla , who reigned from 198 to 217 C.E.

The disc dates to “around the same time as Caracalla,” Oldenburger tells Live Science . “We know that he was completely obsessed with Alexander the Great and was interested and inspired by him, since he was the greatest conqueror of that time period.”

Caracalla was so consumed with him that he even “dressed with the same style and believed he was Alexander the Great reincarnated,” Oldenburger adds. “Caracalla is also the only emperor of his time to be depicted with a shield containing a portrait of Alexander the Great.”

If the disc is connected to ancient Rome, how did it travel all the way to Denmark? Researchers aren’t sure, but they note that trade routes likely connected the two societies.

“[The bronze disk] shows that even the smallest archaeological objects can hide absolutely incredible stories,” says Oldenburger in the statement. “This is a unique find in Scandinavia with connections to one of the most famous personalities in world history.”

How the golden bachelor's leslie fhima is taking advantage of her new fame.

The Golden Bachelor runner-up Leslie Fhima is finding ways to take advantage of her new fame after she didn't win Gerry's heart but won over fans.

 • Leslie stood out on The Golden Bachelor, but ultimately had her heart broken by Gerry's choice of Theresa.
 • Despite the heartbreak, Leslie has found friendships and new opportunities post-show, including brand partnerships.
 • Leslie has capitalized on her reality TV fame, thriving as an influencer with brand deals and a growing personal training business.

The Golden Bachelor runner-up Leslie Fhima has found ways of taking advantage of her TV fame. Leslie is a 65-year-old fitness instructor. She is from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is a former professional figure skater. Leslie has three children and has impressively run in 10 marathons. Leslie was one of 22 women vying for The Golden Bachelor season 1 lead, Gerry Turner's heart. Gerry, 72, lost his wife of 43 years in 2017 when she suddenly passed away from a bacterial infection shortly after she and Gerry bought their dream home in Indiana.

Gerry's empathetic nature, zest for life, and charismatic personality won over America, catapulting The Golden Bachelor to reality TV fame among Bachelor Nation fans and reality fans in general. Gerry narrowed down his search for love in his sunset years to Leslie, Theresa Nist, and Faith Martin , and had hometown dates with all three. Ultimately, Gerry sent Faith home and had equally pleasant and jovial times with Leslie and Theresa on the Fantasy Suite dates, but chose Theresa in the end. However, despite getting married on January 4, 2024, Gerry and Theresa announced their divorce on April 23, 2024.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

The golden bachelor fans felt for leslie, gerry broke leslie's heart.

After Gerry had his final date with Theresa that swayed him in her direction, he broke the news to Leslie that he would not be choosing her. They had a tearful exchange with Leslie questioning Gerry's authenticity and motivations (via Bachelor Nation .) Leslie felt confident that Gerry would choose her based on how he acted and what he said, so Leslie felt blindsided when he broke the news that Theresa would be who he was going to propose to. Leslie lamented about her checkered past with men and how devasted she was to have to deal with heartbreak again.

"Everything you told me last night was a lie," Leslie told Gerry.

Leslie Is Living Her Best Life

Leslie has been busy.

Leslie has seemingly gotten over her heartbreak from Gerry. She has found great friendships with the other women from The Golden Bachelor and even went on Celebrity Family Feud with some of them. Leslie did have to spend some time in the hospital for a bowel obstruction at the beginning of 2024, but she did not let it stop her from showing that there were no hard feelings between her, Gerry, and Theresa, by attending their wedding. Leslie recently revealed that she is not dating anyone and has actually been surprised by her lack of romantic proposals.

Leslie Is An Influencer

Leslie has brand deals.

Leslie has done a great job at capitalizing on her The Golden Bachelor fame by doing paid brand partnerships on social media.

She has connections with several businesses, including advertisements for glasses, a rejuvenation clinic, and a suncare brand.

Leslie's work as a personal trainer has more than likely been booming as well since she has such a high profile in the reality TV world now. She also has links through her Instagram bio to her wellness retreat in Costa Rica and a YouTube workout video. Leslie is thriving without Gerry and is taking advantage of her new fame.

The Golden Bachelor is available to stream on Hulu.

After 16 seasons, MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race still manages to keep contestants and viewers on their toes — even when they’ve been vying for a spot for years, like Season 16 queen Sapphira Cristál.
