Free English Lessons

Asking for information at a tourist office – listening lesson (a1).

to the tourist information office

Listen to a conversation at a tourist office, where a man is asking for information. This free English lesson from Oxford Online English will help you to ask questions (and understand the answers) when you ask for information. This lesson is for beginners.

Listen to the dialogue at normal speed here:

or listen to a slower version here:

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Asking-for-information-25pc-slower.mp3

You can also listen to the dialogue one line at a time:

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Asking-for-information-full-with-pauses.mp3

Woman : Good morning. Man : Hello. Woman : What can I do for you? 1 Man : I’d like some information about Moreton Art Gallery, please. Woman : Moreton Art Gallery? Certainly. It’s definitely worth a visit. 2 Man : OK, great. 3 Woman : What would you like to know? Man : Is it open every day? Woman : Umm… let me check. It’s open every day… except Tuesday. Man : Closed on Tuesdays. OK, no problem. What time does it open? Woman : During the week the opening hours are 10am until 4.30pm. Man : From 10am until 4.30pm. Right. Woman : … and on Saturday and Sunday it closes a bit later, at 6pm. Man : OK, thanks. 3 Oh, just a minute. How much does it cost? Woman : It’s £5.50 for adults and £2.00 for children under 16. Man : Right. Sorry. Just one more question. Does the gallery have guided tours 4 ? Woman : Yes, it does. There are free guided tours, but only at the weekend. Man : OK, wonderful. 3 I think that’s everything. Thanks very much for all your help. Woman : You’re welcome. 5

The exercises below will help you understand some of the language in the dialogue. Read these notes about some of the phrases that the speakers use.

1. “What can I do for you?” means the same thing as “Can I help you?” 2. “It’s definitely worth a visit” means “It’s a good idea to visit.” 3. When someone gives you the information that you have asked for, you can say things like “OK, great”, “OK, thanks” or “OK, wonderful”. 4. If a person gives you a guided tour, they show you a place and tell you important information about it. 5. “You’re welcome” is a polite thing to say when someone says “thanks”.

Asking for Information at a Tourist Office – exercise 1 Comprehension: understanding details

If you listen to the dialogue at normal speed, you can hear the answers at these times: 0.05 – 0.26 – 0.42 – 0.50

Asking for Information at a Tourist Office – exercise 2 Listening skill: listening for specific words

If you visit a tourist office, you will probably ask a lot of questions, and the member of staff will ask some too.

Look at four questions from the dialogue and decide which speaker asks them.

Write M if the man asks the question and W if the woman asks it.

Click ‘Hint’ to see a time reference when you can hear each question.

If you listen to the dialogue at normal speed, you can hear the questions at these times: 0.03 – 0.12 – 0.23 – 0.47

Asking for Information at a Tourist Office – exercise 3 Vocabulary: answering questions

If a tourist asks you a question, do you know how to answer?

Match the four questions from the previous exercise with the answers from the dialogue.

Move the sort elements to answer the questions. Then listen again and check.

Sort elements

  • I’d like some information about…
  • Is it open every day?
  • During the week the opening hours are…
  • Yes, it does…. but only at the weekend.

Asking for Information at a Tourist Office – exercise 4 Listening skill: dictation

Writing the exact words that you hear is an excellent way to practise your listening. It helps your ear recognise the sounds of English.

Listen to four sentences from the dialogue and write one word in each gap.

Asking for Information at a Tourist Office – exercise 5 Listening skill: hearing weak forms

In exercise 4, you wrote some of the key words in the sentence. Some other words are more difficult to hear because they are not stressed. This means they may be pronounced as weak forms – with the vowel /ə/ made with the lips almost closed and the tongue right in the middle of the mouth.

Listen to the same four sentences again and this time write one unstressed word in each gap. Then practise repeating the sentences with the same pronunciation as the speaker.

1. In this sentence, you need the same word in both gaps. The first time, it’s a weak form and a perfect example of the vowel sound /ə/. The second time, the vowel is different, because the next word starts with a vowel.

During week, opening hours are 10am until 4.30pm.

2. This time the two missing words are different, but they’re both weak forms, so the vowel sound is the same.

And on Saturday Sunday, it closes bit later.

3. In this sentence, you need the same word in both gaps.

It’s £5.50 adults and £2.00 children under 16.

4. This time the two gaps are different. The first time it’s a common verb; the second word is a preposition of time.

There free guided tours, but only the weekend.

The 22 hundred years of history of this city and its influencers are obvious in its structure and architecture. The Muslim and Christian occupation throughout its history has molded Seville into the accepting and intellectual city it is today. The city itself tells its own story of art, expression, and exploration unlike any other.

Seville and its Cultural Heritage

Seville and it’s geography make it a mixing bowl of people and culture. Influenced clearly by their neighbors to the south, African and Arab accomplishment and influence can be seen throughout all aspects of the city, especially from its inhabitants.

There is more to see in Andalucia than just its timeless architecture. The Iberian peninsula is home to some of the most spectacular sites on earth, the most gorgeous surrounding Seville. Journey to the Rock of Gibraltar and through Morocco, or visit breathtaking beauties such as the Alhambra in Granada and the lush Doñana National Park.

Halfway between sculpture and architecture, the Atomium was designed and built for the Brussels World's Fair (1958), for which it was the flagship building and emblem. Representing an iron unit cell (9 iron atoms) magnified 165 billion times, the monument with its unique silhouette has, over time, grown to become the symbol of Brussels and Belgium. On the inside the Atomium offers, not just the most beautiful view of Brussels, but also an entirely astounding and surreal ride through its interior spaces and volumes which alone makes a visit worth it. The Atomium ticket automatically includes the entrance to the Design Museum Brussels (150m away).

The line chart illustrates the number of inquiries sent to the Tourist Information Office in a particular city via three means of communication , between January and June in 2011.

It is clear that visitors to the city made more inquires in person and via telephone, while written letters and emails became the least common choices. Additionally, the number of enquiries in person experienced the most dramatic change among the different options.

In January, the Tourist Information Office received 900 telephone enquiries, while just under 800 letters and emails were received. N ot many tourists chose to ask for information in person, with just over 400 queries. Over the next three months, the telephone still remained the most popular method of enquiry, at approximately 1000 queries.

Meanwhile, the number of enquires made in person saw considerable growth to 800, surpassing the figures for emails and postal enquires . From March to June, enquires in person were the most common method of inquiry. By June, the number of in person enquires soared by more than 1,000 to peak at 1,900. During this period, there was also a significant rise in the figure for telephone enquiries, from 1000 to 1600. By contrast, fewer people sent emails or letters to make enquires, with slightly less than 400 enquires in May and June.

Some people think that it is more beneficial to take part in sports which are played in teams, like football, while other people think that taking part in individual sports, like tennis or swimming, is better.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

  • Type: Discussion essays
  • Topic: Sports
  • Keywords: Sports which are play in teams; individual sports

Some people argue that playing team sports provides people with more benefits as opposed to participating in individual sports. Personally, I believe that both types of sports can provide a range of benefits to people, and it depends on what benefits each individual wishes to achieve as to which sport they should choose to play.

On the one hand, team sports, such as football and basketball, provide a number of benefits to those who play. For example, team sports give players the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills , like teamwork and communication skills , which will not only help people in their day-to-day social interactions but also benefit them in their workplace . In addition, team sports also offer players the chance to develop a sense of unity, friendship, and sportsmanship between teammates , which can really add value to people’s lives by making them feel a part of something .

On the other hand, individual sports, like tennis and swimming, also have their merits. When someone plays an individual sport, it usually gives them more opportunities to enhance their personal skills , such as being able to manage emotions, cope with stress , and build confidence and self-esteem . When people are playing an individual sport, they usually have no one else to rely on for support during the game or match, and therefore, individuals will need to develop a strong mindset to be able to deal with and overcome any setbacks they may face . Individual sports also provide better opportunities for people to challenge themselves by setting goals and achieving personal bests .

Overall, I feel that all sports offer great benefits for people’s mental and physical health, and that people should choose whatever sport they are most interested in playing.

How Hudson Yards Went From Ghost Town to Office Success Story

The vacancy rate at Hudson Yards’ office towers is considerably lower than in the rest of Manhattan, though its luxury housing and retail offerings have been less successful.

On a sunny day, several glass-walled skyscrapers stand on city blocks with other buildings in the background.

By Matthew Haag

It was March 2019, and 13,000 people were on Manhattan’s West Side at a star-studded opening ceremony for the largest private real estate project in United States history: Hudson Yards.

A year later, the development was a ghost town.

Shops were closed and offices emptied; the coronavirus pandemic had walloped the corridor of luxury skyscrapers, high-rises and retail near the Hudson River that rose atop a mix of rail yards and parking lots. The roughly $30 billion planned neighborhood looked like it had fizzled before it ever got started.

But now, five years after that grand opening, Hudson Yards has not only survived, but it has also emerged as perhaps the most dominant office market in New York City, a bright spot as companies across the country cut space in the shift to remote and hybrid work. The neighborhood’s glass-and-steel towers have attracted some of the most valuable companies in the world — including BlackRock, Pfizer and Ernst & Young — to pay some of the highest rents in the country.

The remarkable turnaround has even won over some of the project’s loudest critics, who had bemoaned the neighborhood as a soulless, inauthentic enclave for the wealthy whose developers received generous property-tax breaks. Skeptics had also predicted that area — bounded by Eighth and 12th Avenues from West 30th to West 42nd Street — was too out of the way for New Yorkers.

Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller, was among those critics. But now? “I got it wrong,” he said .

The success of the office market at Hudson Yards stands in contrast, though, to the other main components of the project, luxury housing and a multistory mall, which have not fared as well. It has also laid bare the widening chasm between the fortunes of the city’s few very-high-end office towers, including those around Grand Central Terminal, and the woes of everyone else.

Across Manhattan, more than 18 percent of offices are empty, a near-record high with no signs of improving in the near future. The rate has nearly doubled from before the pandemic.

In Hudson Yards, vacancy is under 10 percent, and several buildings are fully occupied. At one building, 50 Hudson Yards, the only available space is on the top floors, with an asking price of more than $200 per square foot per year, almost triple the city average.

The Hudson Yards buildings are largely filled with companies that have mandated a return to the office, and Related Companies, the main developer of Hudson Yards, said that foot traffic at the mall in 2023 had nearly returned to 2019 levels. Employee attendance often exceeds 80 percent on Monday through Thursdays, according to the businesses and developers: similar to rates before Covid and nearly double the rate of other office buildings in the New York City region that are tracked by Kastle Systems .

When the area opened, Mr. Lander worried that the property-tax breaks on new buildings — up to a 40 percent reduction for 20 years — were an unnecessary giveaway to developers. But, he said recently, the development was on track this year to contribute about $300 million more in tax payments than projected to the city’s coffers.

Executives at Brookfield Properties and Related, the two largest developers in the neighborhood, argue that Hudson Yards would not exist without the partnership between the city and developers, which included discounted property taxes for new buildings and infrastructure upgrades, including an extension of the No. 7 subway line from Midtown. The tax breaks are projected to save developers roughly $1.1 billion over a 25-year period, according to the city.

Some critics continue to have concerns about the project, especially since most corporate tenants that moved to Hudson Yards relocated from other Manhattan buildings.

George Sweeting, a former acting director of the Independent Budget Office, the nonpartisan agency that monitors the city budget, said he was worried about a potential domino effect “if you’re just shifting workers around.”

The buildings vacated by new Hudson Yards tenants could struggle to fill the leftover space, leading to a decrease in their values and ultimately in what they pay in property taxes, a major source of city revenue.

This month, the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore is moving in as the anchor tenant of Two Manhattan West, leaving its longtime headquarters on Eighth Avenue. The firm occupied a third of that building, Worldwide Plaza, but accounted for about half of the building’s rent. Because of the firm’s departure, a real estate analyst recently said that the value of Worldwide Plaza had dropped by $500 million.

Several major companies that have moved to Hudson Yards said that its modern, gigantic office buildings offered advantages over most Manhattan buildings. Until recently, BlackRock, the asset management giant, had 4,000 employees spread over 31 floors in three buildings in Midtown East. Now they are on 15 continuous floors in Hudson Yards.

Ruth Colp-Haber, chief executive of Wharton Property Advisors, a real estate brokerage, said Hudson Yards illustrated the growing divide between the top office towers, known as trophy buildings, and the rest. In Hudson Yards, asking rents can start in the low $100s per square foot per year and skyrocket; the Manhattan average is around $70.

“The majority of tenants cannot afford half this rent,” Ms. Colp-Haber said. “For the very rich companies, they have no problem with this rent, and they are thrilled to be able to move their companies there.”

In the 2010s, when Related was in the early stages of building Hudson Yards, company executives believed that its offices would lure companies but that the real moneymakers would be retail, notably its mall and its luxury condominiums. But the script flipped.

Developers have built several luxury apartment buildings, all of which are full or near it. While they include some below-market-rate units, most one-bedroom rentals start around $6,000 a month, far above the city average.

But the luxury condominiums have not performed as well, selling at about half the rate of other condo towers in Manhattan, according to Jonathan J. Miller, the president of Miller Samuel Real Estate Appraisers and Consultants.

Representatives for Related disputed that assessment and said the developer’s own data showed that the buildings were among the top-selling condo towers in the city.

The weaker-than-expected condo sales have led Related to reduce the number of luxury units it plans to build in the neighborhood’s last undeveloped tract. The firm wants to create nearly 1,950 fewer residences there than initially planned, though it still plans to build 324 affordable rentals, as it promised city leaders in an agreement from 2009.

“In this day and age, there is a desperate need for more housing,” said Jeffrey LeFrancois, the former chairman of the local community board.

The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards mall opened with a slate of very high-end retailers, anchored by a three-story Neiman Marcus, which signed a 50-year lease as malls nationwide were struggling. But the department store filed for bankruptcy and moved out of the mall in 2020. That space is now being converted into offices for Wells Fargo.

“Covid notwithstanding, the old thought, ‘If we build it, they will come,’ doesn’t work universally,” said Mark Cohen, a former chief executive of Sears Canada who is now the director of retail studies at Columbia University’s business school. “It certainly wasn’t working and isn’t working in Hudson Yards.”

The pivots in the housing plans and at the mall are part of Related’s ongoing changes at the development. Recently, the firm rolled out its vision for the last undeveloped area in the neighborhood: a casino and resort . And later this year, the company plans to reopen the Vessel , the 150-foot tall spiraling staircase that was closed off to visitors in 2021 after four people had jumped to their deaths. Floor-to-ceiling steel mesh is being installed as a safety barrier.

Elsewhere, the developer has tried to address the criticism that the neighborhood feels out of touch with the rest of the city, and has worked to bring in local restaurants and shops. One recent arrival, on 34th Street, is an outpost of Russ & Daughters, a century-old New York business beloved for its bagels, bialys and smoked fish.

Niki Russ Federman, a fourth generation co-owner of Russ & Daughters, said that Hudson Yards reminded her of Dumbo, the Brooklyn waterfront neighborhood that underwent a similar makeover decades ago.

“New York is always changing and evolving, just as Russ & Daughters needed to evolve,” she said. “That’s very much, to me, New York.”

Abby Whittier, 26, moved to a studio apartment on the 33rd floor of a luxury high-rise apartment building in Hudson Yards in summer 2022. She loved watching the boats glide up and down the Hudson River from her unit, she said, but she realized within a few months that the neighborhood was not for her. There were few affordable restaurants or nearby grocery stores.

“It definitely didn’t feel like quintessential New York City,” said Ms. Whittier, who left when her lease expired in 2023 and moved to Lower Manhattan. “Paying $3,500 to live in New York City and not being able to grab a slice of pizza next door, it was kind of crazy.”
