Isle of Iona

Tobermory was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main town on Mull. It is a picture-postcard of a place with the brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high woodland-fringed hills surrounding the bay. The town has a good variety of shops , hotels , and other accommodation as well as being the administrative centre for the island. The harbour is always busy with fishing boats, yachts and the ferry to and from Kilchoan.  In recent years, the island has become very popular for weddings in a romantic atmosphere.

Tobermory Lighthouse

More recently, Tobermory has been the setting for the children's programme Balamory .  After the initial success of these programmes in Britain, Balamory is now reaching a new audience in Australia.

The Isle of Mull and Iona have become one of the premier destinations for wildlife  watching in the United Kingdom in the last few years. Thousands of people are attracted to the islands in the hope of catching a glimpse of the rare and unusual Golden and White-tailed Eagles, Otter, Corncrake and an abundance of other birds and mammals. The seas off the coast of Mull are important feeding areas for whales, dolphins and basking sharks. The colourful and picturesque island capital of Tobermory is an ideal location from which to make the very most of your wildlife watching on the Isle of Mull.

The island is home to Skye and Frisa, the most famous pair of White-tailed Eagles in the world, as featured on numerous television and radio broadcasts. The re-introduction of these iconic birds of prey has been so successful that breeding pairs can now be seen throughout the length and breadth of the island, including Tobermory.

Tobermory & North Mull

Tobermory is the main town on the island of Mull. The port with its colourful harbour-front buildings was the setting of children's TV show Balamory.

Tobermory ( Tobar Mhoire – Well of Mary) , capital of Mull, is one of the prettiest ports in Scotland, thanks to the colourful houses and a sheltered bay where legend has it one of the Spanish Armada ships sank in 1588 carrying gold bullion.

Built as a fishing port in 1788 on a design by Thomas Telford, the town curves around the harbour and rises into the hillside beyond. Main Street is a mix of shops, eateries, hotels and guest houses and has an excellent selection of locally produced arts and crafts.

Tobermory is home to the Mull Museum, crammed with information about the history of Mull and its people. Guided tours can be booked at Tobermory Distillery while at the Mull Aquarium you can see fascinating exhibits about the area’s marine heritage. In the village is art gallery and live music venue An Tobar and also the Mull Theatre, which puts on a variety of plays and comedies.

A 9-hole golf course sits in the cliff tops above Tobermory Bay offering a tough challenge with spectacular, panoramic views across to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and, on a clear day, the Isle of Skye. There are boat moorings and harbour facilities, and the bay is a departure point for whale watching and wildlife cruises.

Outside Tobermory on the road to Glengorm Castle lies a local craft shop and the starting point for walks through grassland to ancient monuments and forts. Close by Sgriob-ruadh Farm produces award-winning the Isle of Mull Cheese.

We first saw this magical place on bbc “Designing the Hebrides” with banjo.beale who has done an incredible job with the upstairs space. The original dilapidated farm was bought around 1979 by Jeff and Chris Reade and it is utterly inspiring to see it working as a fully-sustainable farm all these years later. The Glass Barn was erected in 1995 and is located just a short ride from Tobermory and contains both a lovely cafe and a fully-stocked farm shop. I was a little star-struck on our last visit as I briefly got to meet Chris who showed us a picture of the original farm and shared some of her inspiring story with us. This girl polldoll and I have been on A Journey. She’s been my rock and my ☀️. I will always be grateful for these few days together on pandocruises with the brilliant cherryhealey. We cried, we laughed, we clattered around Lisbon in a tuk tuk and we sat with a friendship that has seen us both grow from fairly naive 24-year-olds to slightly more robust, definitely more exhausted 42-year-olds. The sea is healing on so many levels and despite a few arguments over my floordrobe and her inability to bring her own toothpaste and fake tan, I will always be grateful for this time with my girl ♥️ pandocruises_media #ad #pandocruises #pocruises #iona #helloIona #cruise #travel #cruiseadventures #cruise #traveldifferent

9 Top-Rated Things to Do in Tobermory, ON

Written by Michael Law Updated Dec 22, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Michael Law lives in Ontario and has visited Tobermory many times for camping and hiking trips.

Tobermory, located out on its own at the end of Highway 6 at the very tip of the Bruce Peninsula, is home to two of Canada's best national parks . In addition to the parks, it has a bit of everything, including shipwrecks, caves, boat trips, lighthouses, and impossibly clear waters for swimming. It's a fun place to visit and makes a great day trip or family weekend getaway destination from Toronto and other areas of Southern Ontario.

Big Tub Lighthouse, Tobermory, Ontario

The town is small enough to park the car and walk everywhere, with many of the most important tourist attractions located around Little Tub Harbour . Bring your hiking shoes to walk to Indian Cove and the Grotto, or explore the trails near the national park visitor center. The crystal-clear water will entice you to take a dip, but be forewarned: it will be a short one; the water is icy-cold. A better alternative is to bring your floaties or stand up paddleboards, or rent a kayak from a local outfitter.

Tobermory is a stop on the Great Lakes Circle Tour and where many people take the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin Island.

Explore all the sights with our list of attractions and things to do in Tobermory.

1. Visit Bruce Peninsula National Park

2. stroll or dine around little tub harbour, 3. take a flowerpot island tour, 4. stop in at bruce peninsula national park and fathom five national marine park visitor center, 5. plan a camping weekend, 6. see big tub lighthouse, 7. dive or tour fathom five national marine park, 8. go kayaking, 9. visit st. edmunds peninsula museum, map of things to do in tobermory, on, where to stay in tobermory for sightseeing.

Indian Head Cove in Bruce Peninsula National Park

When most people think of Tobermory, they think of Bruce Peninsula National Park. This spectacular natural attraction has a bit of everything: incredible Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shorelines and beaches, caves, grottos, hiking trails, and inland lakes. Camping is popular here at one of the three campgrounds located inland on Cypress Lake or in the backcountry. It's a popular place to visit, so be sure to book well in advance.

One of the most spectacular sights in the entire park and the wider Tobermory area is Indian Head Cove, home to the Grotto. This popular spot, known for its small pebble beach, flat limestone shelves, and nearby caves, is one of the must-dos when visiting the area. With the clear, sparkling water and white limestone rocks, it's an incredibly photogenic spot.

The grotto is a small seafront cave that you can shimmy down into through a narrow opening. Don't want to climb down through a hole? You can still see the water in the grotto from above.

Getting to Indian Head Cove takes some planning due to its overwhelming popularity. Throughout the summer, from the start of June to the end of October, access is restricted to those who have made a prior parking reservation or are camping. Parking permits sell out every weekend and most weekdays throughout the summer so be sure to plan ahead by booking online at the Parks Canada website.

The park is spread out in two locations on both sides of Highway 6: On the west side of the highway is the Singing Sands section. Here, you'll find a brown-sand beach that stays shallow for an incredible distance from shore. You'll be astounded as you walk and walk and find that the water only comes up to your knees. The beach is perfect for wading and lounging and great for families with small children or those who are not strong swimmers. One of the advantages of Singing Sands beach is that the water gets relatively warm - a rarity on the Great Lakes.

Singing Sands Beach

In behind Singing Sands Beach is a marshy area complete with rare carnivorous plants. Take the 1.3-kilometer Wild Garden trail that includes a 250-meter section of boardwalk over the fen. The fen area is a peaceful and protected place with many bird and insect species flitting about.

The park has recently built a spectacular visitor center just back from the beach that includes washrooms, an information center, and a concession selling coffee, cold drinks, and snacks. Be sure to walk up to the rooftop viewing platform for fantastic views out over the beach and fen. A fee is charged to park your car in the lot across the road. Go early, as the lot is not large and fills up quickly on warm weekdays and every weekend.

Sightseeing boats at Little Tub Harbour

Little Tub Harbour is the center of the action in Tobermory. Roughly "U" shaped, this cute harbor is surrounded on all sides by restaurants, shops, and a grocery store. Most of the restaurants have patios overlooking the harbor, and you'll find a mix of options ranging from the "all you can eat" fried fish to thin-crust pizzas and burgers.

The main road, Bay Street , is a perfect place for a stroll. Start at the boat launch and then head up the hill to the right for nice views down over the boats bobbing gently in the harbor below. Return the same way, with a stop in at the Sweet Shop for some fudge or other sugary snack and continue around to the north side of the harbor, where you'll see the departure area for the tours to Flowerpot Island. For a spectacular view of the harbor and Georgian Bay, follow the trail along the south side of the harbor past the Tobermory Cruise Lines offices.

Several hotels line the waterfront and provide pleasant views out over the harbor as well.

Flowerpot Island

One of the most popular things to do in Tobermory is to take a boat tour to Flowerpot Island. Tours depart in and around Tobermory and travel through the protected waters of the Fathom Five National Marine Park.

Flowerpot Island is an interesting spot known especially for its unique sea stacks that are known locally as "flowerpots." They make for fantastic photos when set against the turquoise waters of Georgian Bay. In addition to the flowerpots, the island has moderately challenging hiking trails, a historic lighthouse, and backcountry campsites.

In general, and depending on the operator, there are three to five departures a day plus a sunset cruise. Along the way, you'll usually see shipwrecks, easily visible through the clear waters over the side of the tour boat or through the glass bottom.

The distance to Flowerpot Island is only 6.5 kilometers, so the distance is covered relatively quickly. Boat options include double-decker, open-air regular speedboats, closed-in high-speed boats, and open-air high-speed boats. Choose whichever version you are comfortable with and whatever the weather dictates.

There are multiple operators competing fiercely for your business. Take some time to wander Little Tub Harbour and also the location at the very end of Highway 6 to get a feel for the type of vessel you prefer.

Shipwreck in Fathom Five National Marine Park

If you are considering spending some time in Bruce Peninsula National Park or on the waters of Fathom Five National Marine Park, be sure to swing by the visitor center located at the western end of town. Easily walkable from the Little Tub Harbour area, this architecturally stunning visitor center and surrounding area is well worth a visit. Note that there is no visitor center in the park, so get your info here before heading to the park area.

Inside, the center has a 100-seat auditorium showing a fascinating movie titled Life on the Edge on the hour. Another highlight is the Fathom Five 3D exhibit , which is sure to entertain both kids and adults. Invest the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the 65-foot-high observation tower , which provides expansive views out over the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay.

Two hiking trails leave from the visitor center and allow you to experience a bit of the famous Bruce Trail. Both are offshoots of the main Bruce Trail. The first one, Little Dunks Lookout , is 0.8 kilometers return, and it winds its way through the bush and trees to a secluded lookout on Little Dunks Bay.

The second, called the Bruce Trail Burnt Loop trail, follows the Little Dunks Lookout Trail and then continues on in a large 4.8-kilometer loop, with beautiful views of Georgian Bay along the way. If the entire loop is too much for you, a halfway cutoff point allows you to duck out and shorten the distance. Note that the longer Burnt Loop trail can be affected by high lake levels; be sure to check the status before heading out.

Camping at Tobermory

With so many things to see and do in the Tobermory area, most people like to stay for a few days. Hotel accommodation can be very expensive owing to the fact that it's a popular destination, and many travelers need to stay overnight to catch the ferry to Manitoulin Island. A more affordable option is to camp in one of the nearby campgrounds.

The preferred campground is in Bruce Peninsula National Park at Cyprus Lake . Three separate sections, all named after local trees are: Poplars, Birches, and Tamaracks. Choose from any one of 232 sites, but note that they tend to be relatively close together. All sites are unserviced, so RVers should be prepared to boondock. It's best to reserve well in advance during the peak summer season. The park also has 10 yurts for those looking for a bit of luxury, and backcountry sites for those looking for a more remote experience.

Closer to town are two commercial operations: Land's End Park and Happy Hearts Park. Lands End Park offers tent camping and camping cabins, but the focus is on RVs. Nicely treed sites complete with fire pits and picnic tables come in various configurations of 15-, 30-, and 50-amp service, along with water but no sewer. The park has a beautiful beach, volleyball courts, and a large sports field.

Over at Happy Hearts Park , the grounds are more open. Tent campers are also welcome to set up a tent or stay in one of the camping cabins. RV sites have 15-, 30-, and 50-amp options, all with water, but only the 30-amp option also has sewer.

Be prepared to back into your site, as none of the spots are pull-through. On-site amenities include horseshoe pits, a playground, and a swimming pool.

Big Tub Lighthouse

Perfectly positioned at the mouth of Big Tub Harbour, the Big Tub Lighthouse has been ensuring navigational safety since 1885. Still in use today, the lighthouse is now automated. It's an easy spot to visit; just follow Big Tub Road to the end and walk about 30 meters.

There's more to do here than just see the 12.5-meter building, it's a perfect place to go for a swim off the flat rocks. Also, if you've never seen the clear waters of Georgian Bay up close, it's something to behold. Grab your camera and a willing bather and see if you can photograph them swimming underwater. One thing to note: the water is cold and deep beyond the flat ledges, so this is a place for strong swimmers only.

With the short walk, it's easy to bring all your floaties, stand up paddleboards, kayaks, and even canoes right to the water's edge. Big Tub Lighthouse is also an excellent place to go SCUBA diving. It's a popular spot for the nearby wrecks and animal life that live in the underwater cracks and crevices.

Aerial view of kayakers above a shipwreck at Fathom Five National Park

Say the name "Fathom Five National Park" to any SCUBA diver, and their eyes will light up with visions of over 20 historical shipwrecks resting peacefully in crystal-clear water. The unique geological formations composed of dolomite offer additional natural underwater formations, including incredible overhangs, dark caves, and cliffs, making diving here some of the best, if not the best, in Canada.

Don't worry if you aren't a diver. Owing to the incredible clarity of the water, glass-bottom boat tours are able to drift above the wrecks and allow you to peer down into the depths. Flowerpot Island is located in the park, and most of the tours include a stop over a wreck along the way. Two of the most famous wrecks in the park are The Sweepstakes, dating from 1885, and the City of Grand Rapids, dating from 1907.

Kayaking in Tobermory

With its clear water and countless inlets, the waters around Tobermory are a kayaker's paradise. You'll be torn whether to gaze up at the rocks along the shoreline or look down into the water to see the sights.

Launch your craft at the Big Tub Lighthouse and head into Big Tub Harbour. At the far western end, you'll be able to float over the wrecks of the Sweepstakes and the City of Grand Rapids, both dating from the turn of the 20th century.

If you don't have your own equipment, several outfitters in town will be more than happy to get you all set up and point you in the right direction.

St. Edmunds Peninsula Museum

By the time you've driven up from the Greater Toronto Area and are passing the St. Edmunds Peninsula Museum just outside Tobermory, you may think you are in the middle of nowhere. Spare a thought to what it was like to make the journey up here and actually eke out a living over 100 years ago.

The St. Edmunds Museum, a free attraction (although donations are gratefully accepted), is an excellent spot to learn what life was like for these early settlers. On the site, you'll find a fascinating home dating from 1875 where the Belrose family lived and raised eight children. Nearby are interesting artifacts from the era and a one-room schoolhouse that today acts as the local museum.

Tobermory is a seasonal town that comes alive in the summer and shuts down in the winter. The town does not have any large chain hotels; most places are privately owned and operated. It's important to note that with the ferry departing daily, rooms fill up fast, so book well in advance.

  • The Blue Bay Motel is conveniently located within easy walking distance of the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry. The hotel has 16 rooms, all with views of scenic Little Tub Harbour. Rooms have a woodsy décor and are well appointed, with coffee makers and fridges.
  • Home to 36 rooms, some with kitchenettes, plus pleasant common areas with plenty of seating is the Harbourside Motel . A BBQ is available for use by guests.
  • Boasting some of the newest rooms in Tobermory, the Escarpment Heights Motel is a short stroll from downtown. Rooms here are above average in size and all come with kitchenettes.
  • The waterfront Bruce Anchor Motel has one of the town's best decks, with gorgeous views out over Big Tub Anchor. A variety of rooms are available, including two-bedroom suites, ideal for families.

Tobermory is a small community in Southwestern Ontario at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula on Georgian Bay. It is the northern terminus of the Bruce Trail and a popular diving destination - regarded by many as the freshwater diving capital of the world. Less than 1,000 people live here permanently, but about 750,000 people visit Tobermory's two national parks each year, while many others make a stop in the town on their way to Manitoulin Island aboard the Chi-Cheemaun ferry.

History [ edit ]

The rough, rocky tip of the Bruce Peninsula was a pebble in the shoes of European sailors, explorers, farmers and loggers trying to settle the area in the 1800s. Land routes toward Tobermory from the rest of Ontario were not yet developed, and lake conditions in the narrow gap between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay were far from ideal for the ships and boats of the time. After determining the land was unsuitable for farming, resembling the pine-covered Canadian shield of northern Ontario instead of the flat and fertile farmland of southern Ontario, the government sold plots of land to adventurous farmers hoping they'd be able to kick-start agriculture. Farmers found themselves working against the odds; soils were not fit for farming, and their work tended to conflict with the logging industry, which had emerged as a more viable industry.

Loggers took over as farmers abandoned their efforts. Sawmills opened, railways extended their networks, and town sites were settled, including Tobermory in 1884. However, logging peaked in the 1890s as demand diminished, and sawmills on the peninsula turned to serving mostly local needs. While serving as a harbour linking the peninsula to industrious American cities such as Detroit, Tobermory developed a connection to American entrepreneurs - in business, but also tourism. Wealthy American travellers would often arrive by yacht from Michigan to tour the scenic Georgian Bay, and many set up cottages along the coast.

Talk of creating a provincial park on the peninsula began in the roaring 1920's, as locals took note of the many American investors looking to buy up entire islands. In 1930, the federal government's National Park Branch took over Flowerpot Island. Soon after, Highway 6 was extended from Wiarton to Tobermory, and ferry service to Manitoulan Island began. In 1972, Fathom Five Provincial Park became Canada's first national marine conservation park, and in 1987 the federal and provincial governments agreed to create both the Fathom Five National Marine Park and Bruce Peninsula National Park , recognizing the need to protect the unique and important ecology of the area. In 1990, the Niagara Escarpment, which includes the Bruce Peninsula National Park, was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve .

Tobermory is still a beautiful small harbour town, but the landscape and lake (home to 24 shipwrecks) that posed obstacles to farmers and sailors many years ago now provide some of the best hiking and freshwater diving spots in Ontario.

tobermory tourist information

Name [ edit ]

The community was named after Tobermory , the capital of the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. Scotland's Tobermory gets its name from the Scottish Gaelic Tobar Mhoire ("Mary's well"), but it's the similar harbour that inspired the name in Ontario.

Fathom Five National Marine Park is inspired by a passage from Shakespeare's The Tempest , referring to how a person drowned in a shipwreck is transformed by the sea.

Visitor Information [ edit ]

Tobermory is a summer destination; shops are generally open from May until the mid-October, similar to the Chi-Cheemaun's sailing season, and are closed for the rest of the year.

What is special about Tobermory?

Tobermory, Ontario is located within one of the most gorgeous areas in Ontario, the Bruce Peninsula. Visitors come from all over the world to see the gorgeous blue waters and famous underwater shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park.

The area is known for it’s unique geological rock formations (Flowerpot Island) , the Grotto , the towering forests and cliffs overlooking crystal-clear waters.

Although Tobermory is mostly known for it’s  proximity to some of the most beautiful parks in Ontario, the town itself has a unique charm worth visiting.

The harbour, cute shops, ice cream parlours and colourful buildings, all add to the beauty of the town.

When is the best time to visit Tobermory?

Typically the best time to visit Tobermory is during the summer months from June to September. The weather is best, there are longer daylight hours and optimal conditions to hike, kayak, swim and more!

However, the crowds can be overwhelming during the summers, especially summer weekends.

Therefore, I will take it a step further, and say that I recommend early autumn, WEEKDAYS to be the best time to visit. This will significantly decrease the crowds.

That’s just me being me though… you have to visit when it’s most convenient for you.

Early autumn weather is still gorgeous. Temperatures range from 10°C – 18°C (50°F – 65°C) with minimal rainfall.

The autumnal colours will send you overboard, I don’t know how many times I see fall foliage and it is still one of the best things my eyes have seen.

However, if you are visiting Toronto from afar and want to stop over at Tobermory and the national parks, I definitely recommend renting a car.

They do not recommend visiting Tobermory as a day trip , neither do I. However, you do have the option to book a return same day.

How many days should I spend in Tobermory and Bruce Peninsula?

To fully experience the wonders of Tobermory and its surrounding parks, I recommend at least 3-4 days.

Where to stay in Tobermory?

Tobermory offers a range of accommodation options to suit every preference and budget. You can choose from cozy bed and breakfast, comfortable cottages, lakeside resorts or campsites.

I have been visiting cottages every summer for my whole life (the perks of growing up in Toronto), and let me tell you, there is no better feeling than waking up to the smell of bacon, overlooking a gorgeous lake, with a full day of fun and relaxation ahead of you. Trust me.

Lion’s Head Lookout Trail is a scenic hiking trail located in Lion’s Head Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada.

This popular trail offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline along Georgian Bay , making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and avid hikers.

The Lion's Head Lookout Trailhead

The McCurdy trailhead is where the Lion’s Head Lookout trail begins.

This is where you are taken on an exhilarating journey through a diverse landscape of forests, rocky terrain and STUNNING cliff formations.

Forest of the Lion's Head lookout trail

As you hike, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the turquoise waters below.

Lion's Head Lookout Point

The hike is approximately 3.5 kilometres one way and is categorized as moderate difficulty.

The trail is very well marked and maintained, we had no issues following along.

Trail markings in Tobermory

Although the hike is marked moderate, we were able to do it with ease, after a summer of not much hiking (so do not worry)!!

The higher you go, the more beautiful the views will be. Once at the top, the Lion’s Head Lookout point, you will have unobstructed views of the turquoise waters crashing against the cliffs.

The trail can be uneven at some points, so make sure to wear sturdy and appropriate shoes . We just wore running shoes, however, hiking shoes may be needed for variable weather.

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just casually visiting Tobermory, the Lion’s Head Lookout Trail is a MUST-see . You won’t believe that these waters exist in Ontario. This hike is one of the highlights of my summer. I can’t wait to do it again!!

I highly recommend downloading the free app Alltrails to view length , difficulty and terrain of hike ahead of time, as well as track your hike throughout. You can download the app here!

Lion’s Head Harbour and Lighthouse

Lion’s Head Harbour and Lighthouse will be a relaxing break for you after your long hike! The area is SO picturesque, bring your camera, you are in for a treat!

Lion's Head Lighthouse

There is parking right at the harbour, this is a pay for parking lot.

Spend as little or as much time here, the views are gorgeous. Sit on the rocks or soak your feet in the cool blue waters.

Lion's Head harbour

Evening: Camp fire

Head back to your cottage or Tobermory accommodation and have a camp fire.

Be sure to look into fire bans in the area , if there is one in effect, you are not allowed to have a fire!

Day 2: Bruce Peninsula National Park

Morning: halfway log dump hike.

The Bruce Trail Halfway Log Dump Hike to the Grotto is a captivating trail in Bruce Peninsula National Park.

Halfway Log Dump Trailhead

You must book your parking in advance for this trailhead.

They offer 6 hour slots for parking, I recommend booking this first thing in the morning so you can complete the harder hike in the morning and relax in the afternoon!

Click here to book for parking at the Halfway Log Dump.

Some personal advice for this hike …

We hiked this trail in the thoughts that we would end at the Grotto and spend time there with enough time to hike back. PLEASE , do not try this if you are not a seasoned hiker (or up for 7km there, 7km back). Not only did we not have enough time to hike back within the 6 hours, we had to hitchhike from the Grotto parking lot to the Halfway Log Dump parking lot to go pick up our car… This is just a warning, if you feel as though you can make this hike in the right amount of time, by all means go for it! If I was to redo this, I would do this hike with the aim of NOT visiting the Grotto and then visit the Grotto in the afternoon or another day via their parking lot.

That being said, this trail is GORGEOUS . As you hike, you will witness the beauty of the Niagara Escarpment.

Halfway Log Dump Hike

The route follows a section of the famous Bruce Trail, which stretches over 900 kilometres total. You can end at the Grotto or turn back whenever you are ready to!

Click here to view the hike on the free app Alltrails.

Afternoon: The Grotto

The Grotto, a gorgeous cave with a natural blue waters below, is one of the most POPULAR things to do in Tobermory.

In my opinion, this is well worth the visit, however, definitely overrated. I preferred the Halfway Log Dump starting points. Anyway… this Tobermory itinerary would be incomplete without it.

If you were able to complete the Halfway Log Dump hike all the way to the Grotto, congratulations! That is no small feat. If not, opt to book another parking slot at The Grotto for a more relaxing time.

The Grotto

The Grotto’s parking is for 4 hour time slots . This is enough time to park yourself on the rocks, go for a swim and take in the gorgeous views.

You have to make a Parks Canada parking reservation here.

The Georgian Bay Trail hike from the parking lot to the Grotto is about 30 minutes in length, with an easy rating.

You can head straight to the Grotto or stop at Indian Head Cove, which is a white boulder beach you will pass on your way there. Indian Head Cove is a great place to stop for a swim before you relax above the Grotto.

Indian Head Cove

Once at the Grotto, PLEASE be careful . People were climbing down the cave, and jumping into the water, do so at your own risk (I do NOT recommend this). The former lifeguard in me sees red flags all over the place.

Enjoy your four hours at the Grotto before making your way back to your car!

Click here for The Georgian Bay Trail hike , from The Grotto, you can finish the trail through Horse Lake or Marr Lake.

Evening: Campfire under the stars

Campfire at the cottage

After a VERY long hiking and swimming day, spend the rest of your evening with some BBQ and campfire!

Day 3: Fathom Five National Park & Flowerpot Island

Morning: boat cruise or kayak over shipwrecks at fathom five national park.

Start your morning by boarding a boat cruise that will take you on an immersive journey through the calm waters of Lake Huron. As the boat glides along, enjoy the panoramic views of the picturesque shoreline and expansive lake!

You will be seeing some of the coolest time capsules in Canada! The sunken shipwrecks are found under crystal clear waters, and honestly it’s kind of eerie.

Shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Park

After visiting the shipwrecks, the boat will take you to Flowerpot Island. I recommend getting off the boat and hiking around the area if you have time!

There are a couple Tobermory cruise companies; the two most popular are Blue Heron Cruises and Bruce Anchor Cruises .

Both boat companies offer drop off round trips to Flowerpot Island and/or stay aboard scenic boat trips. Additionally, Blue Heron and Bruce Anchor cruises both offer glass bottom boat tours to get the BEST views of the shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park.

Afternoon: Flowerpot Island

Flowerpot island loop trail.

This is an easy 3.5 kilometre, captivating hike within Fathom Five National Marine Park . Flowerpot Island Loop Trail will take you on a journey around the island. Start at the dock and set off on your journey through the forest.

Flowerpot Island

The iconic flowerpot formations are some of the most stunning geological formations, they literally look like flowerpots. Flowerpot Island loop hike is full of gorgeous look out points with panoramic views of Lake Huron.

Evening: Big Tub Lighthouse & Tobermory Town

Located on Big Tub Harbour is the popular Big Tub Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in the 1800’s and used as a navigational guide for ships using the harbour.

It is now a tourist attraction that is visited by a number of people each year. Big Tub Lighthouse is a short walk from the parking lot. You do not need much time here.

I suggest taking a few photos or relaxing on the rocks as you take in the views!

We spent about 30 minutes here maximum.

Spend the rest of your evening walking around town, enjoy some ice cream at the local ice cream parlour or get a true Canadian treat, a Beavertail!

Good night!!

Extra Time in Tobermory

Singing sands beach.

If you have extra time in Tobermory, I recommend visiting Singing Sands Beach . Singings Sands Beach is a gorgeous crystal-clear water beach with white sands.

I mean, more beautiful waters with sand to relax on? Where do you go wrong here?

Still craving some exercise? Go for a swim or walk along their boardwalk!

The reason this is not on my main itinerary was due to the fact that it was hiking heavy, however, if you want a more relaxing Tobermory trip, switch out a hike for a day at Singing Sands Beach.

TIP: If you have a parking pass for The Grotto or Halfway Log Dump, you have free parking at the Singing Sands Beach.

Day 4: Head back to Toronto from Tobermory

Morning: pack up and head back to toronto, spirit tree estate cidery.

On the way back from Tobermory, head to Spirit Tree Estate Cidery for some delicious cider & treats! This cidery offers a number of cider tastings that are made from Ontario apples, pears, lavender and more.

Spirit Tree Estate Cidery

The orchard is gorgeous and a great environment to have a drink and unwind after a busy few days of hiking. We visited on a weekend and they had live music performances and thin crust oven pizza to keep us entertained and fed.

The Spirit Tree shop has ciders, treats and artisanal goods for purchase.

Fill up on delicious goods and get back in the car for the rest of your drive to Toronto! This is the perfect ending to your Tobermory itinerary!

A List of the Best Things to Do in Tobermory, Ontario

The Grotto is what puts Tobermory on the map, drawing visitors to Bruce Peninsula National Park year-round to see this natural cave and freshwater pool. For an unforgettable experience at the Grotto, consider bringing snorkeling equipment to explore the crystal clear waters below. There are a few ways to visit The Grotto. The most popular route involves a 45-minute (one-way) hike from their dedicated parking lot.

A paid parking reservation is required from April to October and must be done well in advance to ensure your spot. Parking reservations are available in February of that year and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The time slots are limited to 4 hours. You cannot book multiple time slots in one day. Please keep in mind that this four-hour limit includes your hiking time (45 minutes each way) and your intended duration for enjoying the Grotto and Indian Head Cove, so time your visit accordingly! Other Grotto visiting options include hiking the Bruce Trail from the Halfway Log Dump (listed below), or from Cyprus Lake Campground (see more below).

Indian Head Cove

Right next to the famous Grotto is Indian Head Cove. This is the perfect place to set up for the day. Lay your towels out on the limestone rocks and take a dip in the turquoise waters of the Georgian Bay. Spend the rest of your time here before you have to head back to your car. Don’t forget you have to make it back for the 4-hour parking time limit.

Tip for visiting The Grotto & Indian Head Cove: To avoid the summer crowds, aim to visit on the weekdays and shoulder season (May, September, and October). September still offers warm enough weather for swimming in Bruce Peninsula National Park.

Natural Arch at The Grotto

Just between The Grotto and Indian Head Cove is a natural arch. Check it out and take some photos around here, the rock formations over the waters are breathtaking.

Hiking Halfway Log Dump

Hiking in the Bruce Peninsula National Park is one of the most popular things to do in Tobermory and is a must on any Tobermory itinerary . The Halfway Log Dump, part of the Bruce Trail, is a gorgeous hike that can lead you to the Grotto if you opt for the challenge. The trail is labeled as “hard”, however, some may find it moderate depending on fitness level. The Halfway Log Dump can be rocky and has some difficult terrain, make sure to wear proper footwear. The shoreline views along the hike are some of the best in all of Ontario, the hike is well worth the effort. The trailhead is on the left-hand side before the beach (see the map below). This trail sign will be at the trailhead.

Despite the beach not being a part of the main trail, the views from here are well worth the detour. Make sure to stop at the beach first before going on the trail. The hike can be quite substantial if you are going to the Grotto, 4.8 miles (7.8 km), from point to point, and you may not make it back in time for your parking time slot.

Parking reservations are required for the Halfway Log Dump from June – early September. This is a paid parking lot with 6-hour time slots. Book your parking well in advance. You cannot book time slots back to back.

Halfway Log Dump Tip : Due to the parking time constraints, consider dedicating separate days to the Halfway Log Dump hike and the Grotto to fully experience both.

Tobermory Visitor Centre

The Tobermory Visitor Centre is an important place to visit before your northern Ontario adventures. Receive personalized hiking tips, important parking information, recommended things to do in Tobermory, and different tour opportunities, for example visiting Flowerpot Island, kayaking rentals, scuba diving passes, and where to grab a bite to eat downtown!

Tobermory Downtown

Spend some time walking around the charming waterside downtown area of Tobermory. Wander along Bay St. near the Tobermory Marina, indulge in some fish & chips at Shipwreck Lee’s, or treat yourself to ice cream at Peninsula Ice Cream and Treats. This is the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of hiking and swimming in the national parks.

Glass-Bottom Boat Cruise With Shipwrecks

One of the coolest things you can do in Tobermory is a glass-bottom boat cruise at Fathom Five National Marine Park. Tobermory’s shorelines are surrounded by choppy and dangerous waters, resulting in one of Tobermory’s fascinating attractions, its sunken shipwrecks!  This boat cruise offers a unique way of seeing the shipwrecks without getting into the water.

Choose between two ticket options: a stay-aboard scenic cruise that overlooks the shipwrecks or a round-trip, drop-off at Flowerpot Island (including shipwrecks). Two reputable companies, Blue Heron and Bruce Anchor Cruises , offer these boat tours. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness some of the 20+ shipwrecks under Tobermory’s waters.

Scuba Diving the Shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park

Want something a little more adventurous than a boat cruise? Try scuba diving around the shipwrecks instead.  Tobermory is known as the scuba diving capital of Canada , with some of the best freshwater diving. There are over 20 shipwrecks to explore underwater with several dive sites throughout Fathom Five National Marine Park.

We do not have sharks, we have shipwrecks!

To dive, you must be a licensed scuba diver. Registration is mandatory and you must purchase a dive pass at the Visitor’s Centre or Dive Shop downtown before embarking on this incredible activity. Check out the div e sites here!

Kayaking or SUP around the shipwrecks

If diving or a boat cruise are not your thing but you want to see the shipwrecks, kayaking, or stand-up paddling (SUP), provide excellent alternatives for an up-close encounter with these sunken treasures. There are a couple of licensed boat companies in Tobermory that offer kayak and SUP rental services.

Engage in some physical activity while exploring the shipwrecks and Big Tub Lighthouse. Make sure to follow the safety instructions of the rental company, as waves can be quite choppy and occasionally dangerous.

Hence, the shipwrecks!

Hiking on Flowerpot Island

Flowerpot Island, situated in Fathom Five National Marine Park, is known for its distinctive geological rock formations that resemble flower pots. You can reach Flowerpot Island exclusively by boat, and there are convenient Tobermory tours from Toronto that visit this special place. Embark on a boat tour to the island for a day of relaxing by the water, hiking the scenic trails along the island, and exploring the caves.

For a fulsome experience, consider dedicating at least 3-5 hours to explore the island thoroughly. Alternatively, for an overnight adventure, bring along a tent and camp on Flowerpot Island . Ensure to make reservations in advance to secure your campsite on the island.

Singing Sands Beach

If you’re in search of sandy beaches in Tobermory, Singing Sands Beach on Lake Huron is an excellent spot to relax and lay out on some soft Ontario sand. The waters are not as crystal clear as found at the Grotto, however, Singing Sands is a great setting for a beach day. Make the most of your visit by packing a picnic, playing some beach volleyball, taking a swim, and strolling along the boardwalk.

Big Tub Lighthouse

When in Tobermory, make sure to catch a glimpse of the Big Tub Lighthouse. Spend some time admiring the building while looking out into the waters. The original lighthouse was constructed in the 1800s but was later replaced by the structure you see today. Situated next to some sunken shipwrecks, Big Tub Lighthouse is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The lighthouse remains in operation, serving to guide boats safely away from the shore. To get to the historic landmark, follow Big Tub Rd. until the end, where you will find the parking lot. Paid parking is enforced at Big Tub Lighthouse.

Lion’s Head Lookout Trail at Lion’s Head Provincial Park

Located just a 30-minute drive from Tobermory is Lion’s Head Provincial Park. This park is often overlooked amidst the hype around Bruce Peninsula National Park. Don’t miss out on this gem. Lion’s Head Lookout Trail is 4.4 miles (7.1 km), out and back and is one of the most breathtaking hikes in Ontario. The hike is rated as moderate with minimal incline, making it accessible to a wide range of hikers. The trail starts in the forest and is consistently rocky. Ensure you wear proper hiking shoes.

As you climb, you will be rewarded with stunning views of aquamarine waters below. Continue until you get to the end of the trail, this is where the main Lion’s Head Lookout point is. Booking opens up 14 days in advance, for parking at the McCurdy Drive Parkette . There is the option for a 4-hour pass or a full-day pass.

Lion’s Head Harbour Lighthouse

Not as popular as the Big Tub Lighthouse in Tobermory, Lion’s Head Harbour Lighthouse has its sweet charm. Lion’s Head Harbour Lighthouse is located just a short drive away from the lookout trail in downtown Lion’s Head and a 30-minute drive from Tobermory. Walk along the pebbled shorelines of Lion’s Head Pebble Beach and take a photo with the Lion’s Head sign. Paid parking is enforced in the marina parking lot.

Camping at Cyprus Lake

Camping in Tobermory instead of a hotel stay is a great way to immerse yourself in the fresh and abundant nature of northern Ontario.  Cyprus Lake is the perfect place to settle down for your stay. The campground is near the Grotto and popular hiking trails. You can access these attractions on foot from your campsite instead of paying for parking.

Reservations for summer camping at Cyprus Lake open in early February of each year. Each campsite comes with a fire pit and picnic table, as well as access to the shared amenities, (shower facilities, washrooms, playground, sports fields, and an outdoor theatre). Cyprus Lake Fees: You will pay a booking fee for your campground but will also be charged a Bruce Peninsula National Park entrance fee . The park entrance fee is covered if you have a Parks Canada Discovery Pass.

Learn some history of the Bruce Peninsula at St Edmunds & Peninsula Museum

Need a little break from the outdoor adventure? Check out St Edmunds & Peninsula Museum to learn about the history of early settlers in the Bruce Peninsula. The old settlement school dates back to the late 1800s and is a great place to stop if the weather is not cooperating outdoors.

Enjoy a Craft Beer at Tobermory Brewing Company & Grill

After a busy day of water sports and hiking, cap it off with Canada’s classic comfort food,  poutine (fries, gravy, and cheese curds). Pair this with a flight of some of Ontario’s finest craft beer! The beer at Tobermory Brewing Co. & Grill is locally crafted and made in small batches, so you will be trying something not many have had before. Grab a flight of 5 x 5 oz beers and try some of their brews. Each beer is named after local highlights, for example, Bruce Trail Blonde Ale and Little Cove Light Lager. Enjoy the unique taste of Tobermory!

Hike the Bruce Trail

Explore the famous Bruce Trail , a must-do hike on an Eastern Canada road trip and the longest hiking trail in the country (nearly 900 kilometers). The Bruce Trail spans from Tobermory to Niagara and offers hundreds of kilometers of side trails along the way.  If you’ve completed the Halfway Log Dump hike you have already walked along the Bruce Trail. There are so many starting points and paths you can take along this iconic trail. Pick a trailhead and get started!

Go for a swim at Little Cove Beach

If you found The Grotto and Indian Head Cove overrated and highly touristy, you will LOVE Little Cove Beach. Located in Little Cove Provincial Park, the quiet pebble-stoned beach is just as turquoise and crystal clear as its more popular counterparts. The beach is a short 10-minute drive from downtown Tobermory and is the perfect place to go for a swim or relax on the rocks. The parking lot is small and parking is very limited. You must reserve your parking in advance (bookings open up 14 days prior, set your reminder).

Visit the Aerial Park at Little Cove Adventures

Craving some high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled adventure? Look no further than the Aerial Park at Little Cove Adventures . The ropes course is 2 hours in length. Expect to jump through nets and tires and test your balance walking the high ropes. Open to those aged 9 years and up, the ropes course varies in complexity, catering to every comfort level from easy to challenging. Necessary safety equipment is provided by the company, but be sure to wear the mandatory closed-toe / closed-heel shoes.

Explore 44 different orchid species with two species found ONLY in the Tobermory region. If you are unable to make it to the festival, it is possible to see orchids throughout the hiking trails of Bruce Peninsula National Park. Remember not to pick or disturb them, appreciate their beauty in their natural habitat!

Campfire Under the Stars

The perfect way to end your time in Tobermory is with a campfire under the stars. Many campsites, vacation rentals, and cottages provide fire pits, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance. Before lighting a fire, ensure to check for any fire restrictions or bans in the area, and when doing so, prioritize safety and adhere to the guidelines.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Tobermory

As your Tobermory adventure comes to a close, spend some time reflecting on the aquamarine waters, rugged trails, and unique experiences you had in northern Ontario. The program is supported by the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to healthy environments. You can find more information on the programs here.

But you don’t need to go to Bayside Astronomy for stargazing. The skies around Tobermory are quite dark and free of light pollution so head out to a beach and take in the starry skies. For more interesting things to see check out Best Places to See the Northern Lights in Ontario .
