Tom Cruise makes a surprise theatre appearance to celebrate "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" presented by Paramount Pictures and Skydance at Regal Atlantic Station on July 11, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia

Tom Cruise is Showing Up At Random Theaters to Surprise 'Mission: Impossible' Fans

The action star is meeting his fans in person.

If Tom Cruise has learned anything from his nearly 30 years in the Mission Impossible franchise, it's how to make a sneaky entrance — though this time, he left the rappel at home.

Cruise has been appearing at theaters across the country to surprise fans of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One — the seventh entry in the action spy series. The theaters included AMC Georgetown in Washington, D.C.; AMC Sunset Place 24 in South Miami, Florida; Regal Atlantic Station in Atlanta; and Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto.

Cruise addressed the crowd alongside the film's director Christopher McQuarrie. He thanked fans for the support and posed for plenty of photos.

"You definitely dream of moments like this. This is amazing," he told one audience. "Hope you enjoy the film, 'cause we made it for you."

Cruise, who is reportedly involved with every aspect of a film he's in, brings his audience-first attitude with him on set.

Costar Hayley Atwell, 41, told The Times that during a script reading for a different Mission: Impossible film, Cruise had the creative power to cut a line he felt the audience "wouldn't get."

"He doesn't want to make movies now to punish an audience," she told  The Times . "He doesn't want films with the message that if you do not understand this, you're not smart."

Costar Simon Pegg, 53, added that Cruise is "just a guy" who happens to be a world-famous movie star.

While Cruise brings a humble presence to fans and costars alike, his pedigree paints him as anything but typical. The 60-year-old actor is known to do all of his own stunts in the high-octane action thriller series. In behind-the-scenes footage as ubiquitous as the films themselves, Cruise dangles from a helicopter, holds his breath underwater for 6-and-a-half minutes, scales the tallest building in the world, and drives a motorcycle into a canyon before parachuting to safety.

The dangerous work has clearly paid off. Dead Reckoning Part One topped the box office last weekend and put up a stellar 96% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Catch it in theaters everywhere today.

They took the day off to watch a movie. Tom Cruise crashed their date.

Ravi Khanna and his wife hadn’t been to a movie together in years.

They took the weekday off — an anomaly for two Washington professionals – to catch a 2:30 p.m. showing of the newly released “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One” on Tuesday. Khanna is a lifelong fan of the 27-year-old franchise and was thrilled to spend the day with his wife, watching the seventh installment in a series that inspired everything from his haircuts to his wardrobe in his 20s, he said.

But someone crashed their date: Tom Cruise , himself.

“My wife’s jaw dropped. I was elated,” Khanna, 47, told The Washington Post. “I remember squinting to make sure it’s really him. … It’s something I’ll always remember for the rest of my life. I felt like a kid the rest of the day.”

Cruise and the film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, surprised fans like Khanna by suddenly taking the stage just before the film began at AMC Georgetown 14 in Washington. Cruise and McQuarrie surprised Atlanta fans later that same day .

Khanna shared a video with The Post of the appearance, but employees at the theater, perhaps sworn to secrecy by the movie franchise’s fictional spy agency, declined to confirm if the visit occurred.

“I didn’t hear anything about that,” a manager told The Post.

For Khanna, it was the moment of a lifetime. (And possibly the best date he’s ever planned, Khanna added.)

Khanna and his wife snagged tickets to the matinee about a month in advance — a testament to Khanna’s enduring love for the franchise. “Everything was about being Ethan Hunt, my version of it. I’d always rally my friends to go see the movies on opening days.”

When they showed up to the theater around 2 p.m., there was more activity than they expected: free popcorn, drinks, T-shirts and hats.

“My wife was like, ‘I haven’t been to a movie in a long time, is this how movies are now?’” Khanna said laughingly. His wife remained confused; Khanna figured that everyone else must be as excited as him for the new film.

As they walked into their showing room, a theater employee suspiciously told the couple that they’re in “for a real treat,” Khanna recalled. “I didn’t think twice. I’m eating it up.”

A number of men in suits were scattered throughout the room, the couple noticed. “It seemed a bit too formal for an AMC,” Khanna said. Still, he didn’t question anything.

Then there was a camera. “My wife’s asking, ‘Is someone going to come out and say something?’” Khanna said. The lights dimmed, and trailers began. Trailers for “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” seized the screen, suggesting business as usual. “It seemed like the movie is about to get started.”

The lights turned back on. Cruise and McQuarrie sauntered out of an exit door by the screen and took the stage with a mic. “Everyone’s just shellshocked. It wasn’t screaming. It was almost silent for a minute,” Khanna said. “Then it erupted.”

Cruise and McQuarrie thanked people for coming out, adding that it was great seeing people back in theaters, a business hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s great seeing you all. How are you?” Cruise said in the video Khanna shared with The Post. The crowd cheered. “You all enjoy the film. Have a great summer, okay?”

The actor and director stayed for a few minutes, and then the lights dimmed again, and the movie began.

“There was an element of shock, no question,” Khanna said. “I didn’t know how I was going to sleep that night.”

And, according to Khanna, the movie was fantastic. “Exactly what a summer blockbuster is supposed to be.”

Moviegoers in Washington and other cinemas across the US were in for a surprise during screenings of Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One by being given a personal introduction by Tom Cruise .

The Hollywood actor stopped by a matinee viewing at an AMC cinema in Georgetown in what was a special screening of the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise. Joining him in video footage from a local media outlet was the film's director, Christopher McQuarrie.

“We're excited to show it to you. We're very excited,” Cruise told the crowd.

“We worked a lot of time and [are] very excited to have this opportunity and have this time to show you this on the big screen. This is why we do it. This moment right here, so y'all enjoy.”

McQuarrie also told fans that the film was made with them in mind.

“This movie represents the work of thousands of people over the last three years in what was a pretty challenging time,” he said.

“And we're just so grateful to have you all here. You're in every meeting. You're in the editing room with us, you're on set with us during every single shot.

“Whenever we're talking about it, every word that's written on the page we're thinking about you.”

A video released by Paramount Pictures showed Cruise also surprising audiences in Toronto, Atlanta and Miami.

“We think about you all while we're making this movie and it's really beautiful. So thank you all very much” he told moviegoers at another cinema.

Cruise attended the UAE premiere of the latest Mission Impossible instalment at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental last month.

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One made its US premiere on July 10.

Co-starring in the film are Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby and Hayley Atwell.

Tom Cruise surprises cinemagoers at Mission: Impossible 7 screenings across US

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Tom Cruise surprised cinemagoers as he showed up at a number of screenings for the new Mission: Impossible film.

The 61-year-old stars in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh film in the action franchise, which is in cinemas now.

On Tuesday (11 July), just days after the film hit screens, Cruise made a number of appearances in cinemas across the US and Canada.

He attended screenings at destinations including AMC Georgetown in Washington, DC, AMC Sunset Place 24 in South Miami, Florida, Regal Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Georgia and Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto.

Cruise was joined by director Christopher McQuarrie, with the pair speaking to the packed-out cinemas before each screening.

“You definitely dream of moments like this,” Cruise explained, describing the experience as “amazing”.

“Hope you enjoy the film, ‘cause we made it for you,” he said, before posing for photos with attendees.

Cruise stars in the latest Mission: Impossible film opposite Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby.

In an interview with The Independent , Atwell spoke about joining the franchise and the rumours that had suggested she and Cruise were dating. Atwell recently got engaged to composer Ned Wolfgang Kelly.

Insisting that she saw McQuarrie and Cruise as “sort of two uncles”, Atwell said: “I would be like, ‘Ooh, there’s some weird rumours, and it feels base, it feels a little dirty, it feels grubby, it’s not what I’m about.’ Why are things being assumed or projected onto me about my relationship with my work colleague and boss?”

Atwell said that she found it “upsetting” because “it’s involving people in my actual life, my personal life, who have to be on the receiving end of that. It becomes invasive”.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Did you know

  • Trivia The frequent delays caused by COVID-19 ballooned the budget to $291 million, making it the most expensive Mission: Impossible film (surpassing Fallout, $178 million), the most expensive film of Tom Cruise 's career (again surpassing Fallout), and the most expensive film ever produced by Paramount (surpassing Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) , $217 million). The insurance company Chubb originally gave Paramount only £4.4 million (about $5.4 million) for the delays, arguing that the cast and crew could still fulfill their duties to the production despite being infected with COVID-19. Paramount sued Chubb in 2021, and the two companies settled in 2022. In 2023, Chubb gave Paramount a £57 million (about $71 million) payout for the COVID-caused delays, reducing the film's budget to about $220 million, which still makes it the most expensive film for Cruise, Paramount, and the franchise.
  • Goofs Steam trains, especially moving at high speeds, need to be continuously provided with fuel, in this case coal. With the engineers killed and the controls opened all the way, the locomotive would have gradually slowed down and come to a halt as the pressure in the boiler dropped. That train would never have reached the bridge for that distance with no coal provided. Since the early 1900s, when firebox coal consumption exceeded the efforts of two men, the trains have used mechanical stokers. The coal would continue feeding without one missing coal shoveler.

Tom Cruise Has Been Showing Up At Screenings Of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ Across The Country

Josh Kurp

Tom Cruise loves risking his life for our entertainment and movie theaters, in that order. His two passions were combined this week when the actor appeared at screenings of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One — featuring the franchise’s “most dangerous stunt” yet — across the country.

Cruise and Mission: Impossible director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie hit up Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto, AMC Georgetown in Washington DC, Regal Atlantic Station in Atlanta, and AMC Sunset Place 24 in Miami within a 24-hour span. They shook hands with audience members, introduced the film, and talked about the theatrical experience. “I just want to thank you all very much for coming,” Cruise said. “We really do dream about these moments of sharing the film with you, so this is very special.”

You can watch footage from their adventure above.

Cruise has vowed to keep movies in theaters, and not have them be instantly forgotten on streaming. “My goal since I was little was to make movies and travel. And not just be a tourist, but work in that world and understand their culture. Through my movies, I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them,” he said last month. “It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted. It’s my passion to entertain you, and I will always fight for big theaters and that kind of experience for everyone.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ( which rules ) is out now.

Tom Cruise Surprises Fans at Movie Screenings

By Zoe Papadakis    |   Thursday, 13 July 2023 10:47 AM EDT

Actor Tom Cruise made surprise appearances at several movie theaters Tuesday that were screening the latest installment in his popular action franchise, "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One."

Cruise, 60, who plays Ethan Hunt in the "Mission Impossible" films, was on hand to greet fans at AMC Georgetown in Washington, D.C., AMC Sunset Place 24 in South Miami, Florida, Regal Atlantic Station in Atlanta, and Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Journal-Constitution noted that the theater was almost full in Atlanta when a "surprise guest" was announced. After the movie previews, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie entered through a side door to cheers from the audience.

Standing at the front of the movie theater, Cruise addressed the audience.

"Great to be in Atlanta," he said. "We just wanted to say thank you all for being here."

Cruise added that he was excited to meet fans in person, saying, "I definitely dream of moments like this."

Cruise's co-stars Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell recently praised the actor , saying he was "just a guy" who happened to love making movies. Speaking with The Times, Pegg, 53, noted that Cruise was involved "in every part of a film" — including helping out on-set caterers.

Atwell said Cruise prioritized the viewers and their experience.

"He doesn't want to make movies now to punish an audience," she said. "He doesn't want films with the message that if you do not understand this, you're not smart."

Tom Cruise Goes Running Again in First Look At Mission: Impossible 8

Tom Cruise does what he does best in new footage from the filming of the next Mission: Impossible installment, and fans love it.

  • Fans share excitement over Tom Cruise running in London for Mission: Impossible 8 .
  • Action-packed scenes feature Cruise sprinting to save the world from rogue AI, captivating audiences globally.
  • Mission: Impossible 8 plot remains a mystery, but it will likely continue the story with The Entity and familiar faces.

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is back to doing what he does best, running, as the actor films scenes for the action sequel Mission: Impossible 8 in London, England. Fans of the actor and the franchise have now taken to Twitter/X to share images, footage, and their thoughts on Cruise’s running, which somehow remains one of the most gripping elements of modern blockbuster moviemaking.

You can check out the visual poetry that is Tom Cruise running below, as well as some thoughts and feelings shared by fans who cannot wait to see him run all over the world once again in Mission: Impossible 8 .

Several images of the actor sprinting either away or towards the latest global threat have also emerged, and offer our first look at the next Mission: Impossible sequel, which was formerly titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two before changes were made behind the scenes .

Released in July last year, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The Mission: Impossible follow-up finds Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt, who this time must save the world from a rogue AI known as “The Entity.” You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning below.

“Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

What Will Mission: Impossible 8 Be About?

It is currently unknown exactly what Mission: Impossible 8 will be about but, considering that movies 7 and 8 were initially intended to be a two-parter, we can no doubt expect the next movie to carry over some of the plot elements from its predecessor. This likely includes both the AI enemy known as The Entity , and the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales), a terrorist with ties to Ethan Hunts's past. We can also expect to see the core cast return, including Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, as well as newcomer Hayley Atwell as Grace.

How the Mission: Impossible Title Change Could Save the Franchise

The rest of the ensemble will reportedly include Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, alongside Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Following the apparent fate of Ilsa Faust , it is currently unknown whether Rebecca Ferguson will be involved.

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 23, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.

Box office data has come in for the first five days since "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" debuted to moviegoers.

The Christopher McQuarrie-directed film bringing actor Tom Cruise back as spy Ethan Hunt for the seventh time saw a global box office gross of $235 million in the five-day time span from July 12 to Sunday, according to data from IMDb site Box Office Mojo . That figure includes roughly $80 million that reportedly came from domestic ticket sales and $155 million from international.

Paramount Pictures had forecast ahead of its release that "Dead Reckoning Part One" would bring in at least $250 million in five days.

Other movies in the top five for the domestic weekend included "Sound of Freedom" at $27 million, "Insidious: The Red Door" at $13 million, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" at $12 million and "Elemental" at $8.7 million, according to Comscore. "Elemental" from Disney has been out the longest of the five, garnering a total of nearly $311.7 million worldwide since mid-June, the media analytics company found.

ANGEL STUDIOS' ‘SOUND OF FREEDOM’ PASSES $50 MILLION AT US BOX OFFICE

That data comes as the box office during this summer has been slower compared to the prior year’s, according to reports.

"We have worked on this film for years and it’s finally in theaters," Cruise tweeted about "Dead Reckoning Part One" the day after its release. "We hope you love it as much as we loved making it for you. Thank you for continuing to support the Mission: Impossible films."

As of late last month, the prior six movies in the "Mission: Impossible" series have churned out $3.57 billion in lifetime box office grosses, IMDb previously told FOX Business. For only domestic box offices, the company said it was $1.55 billion.

The follow-up to the latest "Mission: Impossible" movie – "Dead Reckoning Part Two" – is still in the works, with its anticipated release date falling next year, according to reports. Tom Cruise Seen Sprinting Down Street in London as He Shoots Next Mission: Impossible Movie

The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' film, which does not yet have a title, is expected in theaters May 23, 2025

Mega / Dean - Click News And Media / SplashNews.com

Tom Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down in the next Mission: Impossible movie.

On Sunday, Cruise, 61, was seen sprinting down a street in London while filming a scene for the upcoming eighth film in his signature action franchise. The actor could be seen wearing a black suit with a white shirt opened at the top, with fake blood drenched over his chest while filming the sequence.

Cruise most recently appeared as his Mission: Impossible character Ethan Hunt in last year's Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which made $172 million at the  domestic box office . Dead Reckoning also earned the franchise its first-ever Academy Award nominations when it received nods for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the recent 96th Oscars ceremony.

A title for the upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible movie has not yet been announced. The next film was originally set for release on June 28, but production delays related to 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike forced the film to restart production in the fall and delay its release until May 23, 2025, as Deadline reported back in October.

Dead Reckoning left Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and series regulars Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) at odds with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) and forging new alliances with characters like Grace (Hayley Atwell) over a battle for control over a sentient artificial intelligence.

The eighth Mission: Impossible film is just one movie among a number of projects Cruise has in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed Cruise will star in the next movie from The Revenant filmmaker  Alejandro G. Iñárritu , while The Hollywood Reporter  reported in January that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 as a sequel to Cruise's major 2022 success Top Gun: Maverick .

Cruise, known for his penchant for performing his own stunts, was recently seen climbing the iconic Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills on March 16 accompanied by a film crew. A representative for Cruise did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. While it's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday, the stunt did not appear related to the next Mission: Impossible film.

Mission: Impossible 8 is expected in theaters May 23, 2025.

Severance Star Joins Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 8

The cast of Mission: Impossible 8 continues to grow.

Tramell Tillman , known for his breakout role in the popular Apple series Severance , has secured a role in the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The film was previously titled Dead Reckoning Part Two and is no longer using that title.

Per THR , Tillman received SAG and Spirit Award nominations for his performance in Severance , where he starred alongside Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette and John Turturro. Tillman is set to return for the second season of the series. His other screen credits include Dietland , Godfather of Harlem , and Hunters.

Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 8 Faces a Disruptive On-Set Villain - Sheep

Tillman will be joining a cast of Mission: Impossible franchise newcomers including Katy O’Brian , Nick Offerman, and Hannah Waddingham, as well as returning Mission veterans Henry Czerny, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, and Vanessa Kirby. Plot details including Tillman’s character are being kept under wraps . Tom Cruise is producing the film for Paramount and Skydance, with Christopher McQuarrie directing. Executive producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock.

The Eighth Movie Is in the Works

In January 2019, Cruise announced that the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films would be shot back-to-back, with McQuarrie writing and directing both. Plans for the film later changed in February 2021. Filming began in March 2022 in the United Kingdom and included other locations such as Malta, South Africa, and Norway. The release date for the sequel was moved from June 28, 2024, to May 23, 2025. Production faced delays due to Cruise and his team promoting the release of Dead Reckoning Part One during the summer and the SAG-AFTRA strike that started in July 2023, resuming in March 2024.

Mission Impossible 8 Director Shares a Look at a Jaw-Dropping Stunt

The eighth installment of the franchise will have a three-week run in IMAX and will be filmed using IMAX digital cameras for the digital format. In contrast, Dead Reckoning Part One only had a one-week run in IMAX due to Oppenheimer opening the following week with a guaranteed three-week run in the format.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One concluded with a major cliffhanger, suggesting that Ethan Hunt and his team are embarking on one of their most dangerous missions yet in their pursuit to find and destroy The Entity. Behind-the-scenes shots from the set indicate that the upcoming installment will feature high-stakes action scenes, consistent with previous films in the franchise. Mission: Impossible 8 is unlikely to be the final film in the series, as McQuarrie has hinted at a ninth entry in the future.

The untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film is scheduled for release in the United States on May 23, 2025.

Mission Impossible: Why Tom Cruise loves Paris

Reading time: 0 min Published on 15 March 2024, updated on 26 April 2024

We’ve just seen the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible film series, and as expected, it delivers! At the world premiere of the film, Tom Cruise was full of praise for Paris, chosen as the main location for his impressive stunts. Here are 6 good reasons to go see Tom Cruise in Paris on the big screen…

1. Helicopter flight over the Eiffel Tower

When you’re Tom Cruise and you have just 120 minutes to save the world (the plot is about a race against time to recover a stolen consignment of plutonium) the most practical solution is by helicopter. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the Seine, the three floors of the iconic Eiffel Tower, and action along the quays of the Seine. Panoramic views are the upshot.

2. Parachute landing on the glass roof of the Grand Palais

Dropped (for real) by a plane over Paris, Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill land on the glass roof of the Grand Palais and pitch into the middle of a huge party. A little stunned by the fall (plunging 10,000m will do that), they cross the dance floor (what a fabulous place for a party) before completely destroying the men’s room during a violent punch-up. A memorable scene.

3. Betrayed at the Trocadero

For secret agents, treachery is as common as drinking a glass of water. But, if you’re going to even think about plotting against Tom Cruise, you’d better do it well - and big time. The action takes place far from indiscreet ears, on the esplanade of Trocadero, facing the Eiffel Tower. Classic.

4. Rendezvous in the gardens of the Royal Palace

There’s nothing quite like a secret rendezvous with a former love interest to heat up the action. The perfect place for a meeting? The gardens of the Royal Palace, between the arrow straight paths and iconic columns created by artist Daniel Buren. Save the world, love art and each other, nothing else matters. Sizzling.

5. Wrong way round the Arc de Triomphe

As you can see from the picture, Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt is about to take enter the vicinity of l'Etoile, a junction of twelve avenues. Going the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe, the most rock'n'roll traffic intersection in France, our hero realizes the fantasy of every self-respecting Parisian motorist. Insane.

6. Speed boat chase through underground canals

Our very well-informed hero knows perfectly how to traverse the underground tunnels of the Canal Saint-Martin, which stretches between the Bastille and the basin of Villette. This is one of the trendiest districts of Paris, a place of tranquil daytime delights and lively evening outings. This time, the canal saves his life. Ah that Tom...
