Le deuxième plus long Tour de l’Abitibi de l’histoire sera lancé le 10 juillet

Après deux ans d'absence, le Tour de l'Abitibi sera de retour sur les routes de la région du 10 au 17 juillet.

Le comité organisateur a présenté sa programmation lundi après-midi à Amos, qui agira comme ville-hôtesse de la 52e édition cette année.

Au total, les meilleurs cyclistes juniors au monde vont parcourir près de 675 kilomètres - ce qui en fera le deuxième plus long Tour de l'Abitibi de l'histoire - en traversant les villes d'Amos, Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or, Malartic et Senneterre.

Puisqu’on est la Coupe des Nations, qui est l’équivalent des séries de la Ligue nationale du vélo, les coureurs peuvent faire plus de kilométrage, étant donné que c’est vraiment l’élite Une citation de Bruno Gauthier, directeur technique du Tour de l'Abitibi

Le Tour de l’Abitibi accueille d’ailleurs la seule étape de la Coupe des Nations junior disputée à l’extérieur de l’Europe.

Épreuves du 52e Tour de l’Abitibi

Une arrivée au sommet du mont-bell.

L'étape de Senneterre, prévue le 15 juillet, promet d'ailleurs d'être spectaculaire, selon M. Gauthier, puisque cette course de 140 kilomètres se terminera au sommet du Mont-Bell.

« Au lieu de s’arrêter en ville, on va faire l’arrivée au sommet du Mont-Bell. Le Mont-Bell, c’est un espace récréotouristique que la Ville de Senneterre a développé. C’est aussi une route avec un bon dénivelé sur le dernier kilomètre. Alors, on va en profiter pour amener une difficulté supplémentaire pour les athlètes, difficulté après 139 km de vélo, ça va faire mal aux jambes! Ça peut créer de meilleures occasions de se démarquer », affirme Bruno Gauthier.

Cette épreuve pourrait venir brouiller les cartes au classement, estime M. Gauthier.

La dernière étape du Tour 2022, le circuit urbain de dix tours dans les rues d’Amos, devrait aussi en mettre plein la vue aux spectateurs.

Une autre année marquée par la COVID-19

L'organisation du Tour de l'Abitibi complète présentement le recrutement des équipes. L'alignement final devrait être connu au début juillet.

Les membres du comité organisateur ont dû mettre les bouchées doubles pour planifier l'événement.

Quand on a décidé de lancer le Tour, en février, on avait déjà quatre mois de retard , raconte la présidente Mélanie Rocher.

La pandémie aura d'ailleurs aussi des impacts lors de l'événement.

« À date, oui, il y a des protocoles COVID : à l’intérieur de l’école, par exemple, il va falloir respecter la bulle. Il va falloir évaluer les symptômes de façon quotidienne, notre équipe médicale va être très occupée. Aussitôt qu’on a des symptômes, ça va être un test COVID et un isolement », indique-t-elle.

L’organisation est aussi toujours à la recherche de bénévoles. Une vaste campagne de recrutement sera bientôt lancée.
