Global soccer giants set to face off in major U.S. markets from July 22 – August 2

Series backed by new Sixth Street portfolio company built to bring epic soccer matchups to local fans around the world.

Santa Clara, CA ( May 12, 2023) – Soccer Champions Tour today announced the launch and schedule for a new series of games featuring six of the world’s most iconic soccer clubs to be played this summer in major markets across the United States. Spain’s Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, Italy’s Juventus and AC Milan, and England’s Arsenal and Manchester United will compete in eight matches between Saturday, July 22, and Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

The 2023 Soccer Champions Tour is the first time these six clubs, which hold among them 31 European trophies, have participated together in a U.S. series. The eight fixtures will take place in host market stadiums in Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, and San Francisco.

Highlights of the 2023 Soccer Champions Tour include Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona meeting in Texas for the first time ever at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys; Manchester United and Real Madrid facing off for the first time since 2018; FC Barcelona and Arsenal competing in a rematch of the 2006 European final; and Italian rivals AC Milan and Juventus playing each other in California for the first time in their more than 120-year histories.

How did the Revolution fall to Club América? The Champions Cup showcases restrictions in place for MLS sides.

Revolution coach Caleb Porter noted Club America fielded “essentially 11 DPs (Designated Players)” on Tuesday at Gillette Stadium.

FOXBOROUGH — Club América provided the pyrotechnics, both on and off the field. Las Aguilas proved to be a highly efficient one- and two-touch passing team, their passionate supporters’ chanting and singing emerging through smoke-bombed blue and yellow.

It wasn’t until after midnight Tuesday that Las Aguilas departed Gillette Stadium following a 4-0 Champions Cup win over the Revolution . First to leave was a person whose family made much of their success possible — Emilio Azcarraga Jean, chairman of Televisa SA, one of the world’s largest Spanish language networks. His father, the late Emilio “El Tigre” Azcarraga Milmo, could have been considered a combination of Rupert Murdoch and George Steinbrenner, who happened to be in the same Culver Military Academy class.

El Tigre was probably the most powerful businessman in Mexico and helped put the country on the sporting map by building Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to play host to the 1968 Olympics and 1970 World Cup, and also to serve as the home for Club América.

Azcarraga Jean presents a comparatively low profile but, like his father, invests in keeping Club América competitive. That meant the Revolution were fighting against a team backed by 100-plus years of tradition and an ultra-rich owner, along with the fact Club América is unimpeded by salary cap restrictions.

As Revolution coach Caleb Porter noted, Club América fielded “essentially 11 DPs (Designated Players),” plus Brian Rodriguez, who came off the bench to score the fourth goal and actually is a former DP, with Los Angeles FC. Not included in the starting lineup were three forwards tied for the team scoring lead: Julian Quinones (injured), Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodriguez (a recent $4.5 million transfer to the Portland Timbers), and Diego Valdes (75th-minute substitute).

Unsurprisingly, Club América stands in first place in Liga MX, and the Revolution are 29th (last) in MLS going into Saturday’s game against Charlotte FC.

Best moments of the match! 📹️ @NERevolution 🆚 @ClubAmerica #ConcaChampions pic.twitter.com/FszmE2cU6v — Concacaf Champions Cup (@TheChampions) April 3, 2024

The operative word in this scenario, though, is “restrictions.” The Kraft family has the finances to compete. The problem is, MLS rules won’t allow them to spend it — which is fine for the league, and has helped it stay in business for 29 years, a record for pro soccer in the United States. Once teams go outside MLS, however, it’s a different world. You could say the real world. Unfortunately, MLS is operating in a bubble. It’s a decent-sized bubble, comparable to other American pro sports. But short of breaking out of it, MLS won’t come close to reaching its potential.

When MLS teams do stay in contention with Liga MX rivals, it is not because of the system, but in spite of it. The Champions Cup quarterfinals include two other MLS teams besides the Revolution: the Columbus Crew, who played Tigres UANL to a 1-1 tie Tuesday; and Inter Miami, which fell, 2-1, to Monterrey on Wednesday night.

The Revolution might be able to emulate the Crew, staying within budget and excelling in the Champions Cup. After all, the Crew are a team built by Porter, before he joined the Revolution this year . Or, the Revolution could go on a spending spree, similar to Miami. But neither will happen in time for their return leg visit Tuesday to Club América.

Club América’s four-goal advantage might be considered unassailable. But the Revolution did come close to overturning a similar score in 2003, when they rallied within a goal of LD Alajuelense before falling, 5-3, on aggregate. However, challenging Club América at Azteca is a different proposition. There’s the elevation — 7,200 feet. Also, the grass field and its dimensions, listed at 75 by 115 yards but likely larger, favor Las Aguilas’s possession game. Add in motivation provided by supporters and a tradition that goes back before the Azcarragas and evenCantinflas, the great comedic actor who signed up to publicize the team in the 1950s.

But first, there is the matter of Saturday’s home game against Charlotte FC. The Revolution have compiled an 0-4-1 record in league play, their second-worst start to a season.

“It’s a long season,” midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye said Tuesday. “We’ve played five games in the league. So, we have 29 left and it’s a lot of football to play. We get paid to perform, so it’s our job requirement to show up and to figure this out and keep pushing collectively as a team. I think we have to just look at ourselves and be more accountable, and I think we just need to hold ourselves to a higher standard as a team. We’ve seen teams bounce back from worse starts than this. So, I’m pretty confident.”

One thing about soccer is, there is almost always a realistic goal to play for, even just gaining self-esteem. The Revolution are facing adversity, but it shouldn’t be a surprise to see them motivated for the next two games.

“These are the games you want to play,” Kaye said of the Champions Cup. “These are the games you remember at the end of your career. We obviously understand that they’re a good team. They like to possess the ball. We had a game plan to kind of counter that, counter their strengths a little bit. We just didn’t execute well enough to come away with a result. But Club América is good, and it’s a good way of looking at what proper football looks like when a team is connected.”

The Revolution, meanwhile, have not always been on the same page.

“We’ve got to win this next game in the league,” Porter said. “So that’s what we’re focused on right now. And then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do down 4-0 going on the road at Azteca.”

T he Chinese market closed its doors to the Argentine National Team after the controversy of Lionel Messi 's absence in Hong Kong for an Inter Miami fixture, announcing the cancellation of two friendly matches scheduled against Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

However, the United States opened the door to Lionel Scaloni 's national team and has already scheduled two dates in March in a short tour, booked for March 18 to 22.

tour america soccer

Firstly, Argentina will take on El Salvador at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on March 22. Then four days later, they will face Nigeria at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles on March 26.

In both cases, the schedule has not yet been confirmed but the two matches will serve as preparation for the Copa America 2024, which will return to the United States in June with Argentina looking to defend their 2021 title which they won against Brazil.

"First, Lionel Scaloni 's team will face El Salvador at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia (March 22)," an Argentine Football Association (AFA) press release said. "While the second match will be against Nigeria at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles (March 26)."

This new tour will be much more accessible for Lionel Messi 's match load since he will not need to travel so many miles to play these matches, after the MLS league tournament started on Wednesday, February 21 and the competition runs until December.

While in the summer Messi will have the Copa America and the Leagues Cup, in addition to the CONCAF Champions' Cup. The AFA even invited Leo to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Managing games is critical for the 36-year-old, who has suffered from recurring muscular injuries in the twilight stage of his career. His minutes need to be controlled to prevent them from happening and to extend his ability to play for longer.

How did Argentina win the Copa America?

In a tense Copa America final, Argentina seized control early, with Di Maria 's 22nd-minute lob putting them ahead. Brazil fought back, but Richarlison 's efforts were thwarted by offside rulings and saves from Martinez .

Despite late drama with yellow cards and a scuffle, Argentina held firm, with Messi 's stumble in the final minutes not costing them. The match ended 1-0, Argentina claiming their first Copa America title in 31 years.

“I love how passionate the fans are,” Shearer said about Premier League fans in the USA. “They are obviously very knowledgeable. They obviously love their football very much. I understand it might not be the No. 1 sport in America but soccer is growing and it is growing really fast... The more events like this, the more times that we, the Premier League, come over to America and showcase the Premier League and the trophy at these organized events, it is only going to get bigger.”

“I think this will be the first of many,” Shearer added. “It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this was going to happen every single season. It will be a great tournament and a chance to see some Premier League legends and huge football clubs.”

Referees from the Premier League will also be heading Stateside to work alongside American officiating crews to fully replicate the PL matchday experience.

Toyota Scores a Goal with Club America Partnership for Tour Águila in the U.S.

Toyota will engage in a series of soccer initiatives to enhance the fan experience

PLANO, Texas (March 22, 2018) – Screams will be heard from far and wide as Hispanic fútbol fans cheer on their teams during an action-packed year of soccer. Toyota is diving into the action as the official sponsor of fans with a series of key partnerships that will bring the passion for the sport to center stage.    To kick off 2018, Toyota is partnering with Club America, the most celebrated and followed soccer team in North America. The sponsorship includes participation in Tour Águila, the club’s annual U.S. tour.  Toyota will bring fans closer to their beloved team through activities featuring players, social content and digital programs and much more.   “Toyota wants to amplify the fans’ experience by igniting their passion and spirit for the game as they cheer on their favorite teams,” said Tyler McBride, engagement and event manager, Toyota Motor North America. “Our terrific partnership with Club America and participation with other high-level soccer platforms underscores our genuine commitment to the sport and the people who watch it and live it.”   As the official automotive sponsor of Tour Águila, the brand will bring the action to fans starting on March 24 in San Diego, California against its rival, Club Tijuana. The Tour consists of a series of friendly matches against some of the most important teams in Liga MX and MLS during the preseason and FIFA dates.  These matches will take place in key Hispanic markets including cities in California and Texas and will be broadcast on Univision Deportes in the U.S. and on Televisa in Mexico.    “We are very excited to continue our expansion in the United States by partnering with Toyota, a global leader and innovator in the automotive industry,” said Mauricio Culebro, president of operations for Club América. “Toyota understands soccer as a passion point and the value of engaging our fans during Tour Águila.”   In addition, Toyota will be presenting sponsor of the pre-game Fiesta Futbolera, an interactive Fan Fest celebration of the Club, including a showcase of the team’s championship trophies, Agui the official mascot and legendary player appearances.  Other elements of the partnership include in-stadium content opportunities including live partnership announcements and video, on-field signage, tickets and giveaways.    Game schedule, team information and all the action can be followed on Toyota’s social channels @ToyotaLatino with hashtag Vayamos Juntos and on the club’s official tour website www.touraguila.com and social handles @TourAguila and @ClubAmerica. The sponsorship was coordinated with PRIMETIME Sports, the commercial agency for Club América in the U.S. and producer of the annual Tour Águila.

Along with Club América, Toyota will connect with soccer fans at a community level through an association with Alianza de Futbol, the premier organization in the U.S. dedicated to the support and development of Hispanic amateur soccer. As the exclusive automotive sponsor of Alianza, Toyota will be the title sponsor of the Copita Alianza, a series of youth tournaments that take place from May through October in key Hispanic markets where thousands of children participate. The sponsorship includes activation areas where Toyota will connect with families and kids with a full experiential footprint, including branded jerseys, trophies, and special soccer guest appearances. The tournament kicks off the weekend of May 12-13 in Houston, Texas.   “Being a part of Alianza this year provides an opportunity to engage with kids and their families in local fields throughout the U.S.,” McBride added. “Soccer provides a positive and healthy environment for kids and we’re looking forward to being part of these fun-filled tournaments.”   The soccer frenzy will reach fever pitch this summer during the sport’s most watched global tournament.  Toyota will continue its commitment to all the hard-working fútbol fans through a robust effort that will harness the excitement and energy of the games.  And the Toyota Tundra will be along for the ride.   In addition to active, on-the-ground game partnerships, Toyota is engaged with a variety of popular soccer properties including Liga Mexicana, U.S. Men’s National Team, Mexican National Team, and UEFA Champions League, with broadcast integrations and live streaming during telecast games.

John Campbell

We booked a tour for Euro 2020, in July 2021, tickets, accommodation, Hermitage and Cathedrals tour, all A++++. Great service, super support, nothing too much trouble at all, used the agency twice now. Super happy.

Gabriel Carvajal

My cousin and I attended the first Mexico soccer games of the 2018 World Cup and World of Discoveries was excellent. The lodging accommodations were great and centrally located. The personnel were wonderful. Thank you Tim for taking care of all our request. I was very surprised to received a message at 3 am informing me that our car was outside waiting to transfer us to the airport. That is the level of service that we received from World of Discoveries. Great company that made our trip even more memorable since it was absolutely hassle free.

First time with the World of Discoveries tour but my fifth time overall with tour guided trips. They did an amazing job finding the best hotel places especially the Museum Hotel that was connected to the QT. Loved that we could do laundry since we were traveling for 2 weeks. The selection of itinerary was spot on and had so many wide arrangement for all to participate. The Hobbiton was surprisingly my favorite and definitely need to go. Our tour guide Micheal was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful through your our trip. Communication was very good having the WhatsApp helped with knowing when and where we needed to meet at all times. Plus the other travels on the tour guide was a bonus since we all loved soccer and got along extremely well. OVERALL the trip was a big success and I would ? book another trip with them.

Our experience with World of Discoveries has been impeccable. From Qatar’s World Cup onwards, they will be our #1 choice. Varya, Iren, Nathan, Damon, Iren, Lina; Anna and all the rest of the Wofdi team: Thank you!

Bruce McDougall

I recently toured Qatar during the World Cup with Varya and Mike’s team at World of Discoveries. The experience over three weeks was first class. Varya and her team nailed the detail for every aspect of the trip from planning and booking through to the actual travel, tours, sightseeing, transport, accommodation and ticketing to games. They were always accessible to deal with any issues that arose and went the extra mile to ensure the travelling group was happy, organised and safe. And they throw a mean party. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend World of Discoveries for trips of a lifetime.

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

The FC Barcelona men’s first team will repeat the last season’s destination and travel once again to the United States for their preseason tour, BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023, in which they will play a total of four matches, all against European opposition. The first two games will be played in California; 22 July against Juventus in Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area, and on 26 July against Arsenal FC. The last two games will take place in Dallas Texas, for the clash with Real Madrid on 29 July and in Las Vegas where the tour will conclude with a game against AC Milan.

The US Summer Tour 2022 saw the Barça play on the East Coast with games in Miami and New York – as well as games in Las Vegas and Dallas – cities which hosted the majority of the Club’s institutional and social activities. This year the geographical emphasis has shifted to the West Coast where the majority of the Club’s activities will take place and where they will play three of their four scheduled games.

mini_3200x2000_web

The blaugranes’ debut on the tour will come on 22 July against Juventus in the Levis Stadium, Santa Clara in San Francisco, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. It will be the third time that Barça have played at the venue which has room for 68,000 fans following matches against Manchester United in 2015 and AC Milan in 2018. The most recent encounter between Barça and Juventus came in a friendly last season on tour, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The other games in California will come against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side on 26 July in the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, a venue opened in 2020 with a capacity of 70,000 and the ground where the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the NFL play their home matches. The fixture between the two sides will be their first in seven seasons, the last meeting having come in the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League in 2016 in which Barça won 2-0 in London and 3-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The game will also be the first on American soil between the two clubs.

Another Clásico in Arlington, Texas

The summer tour this year will also include one of the most awaited matches for the fans, the Clásico, the third meeting between Barça and Real Madrid in the USA. He game will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which has a capacity of 80,000 and is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The venue is one that Barça have visited twice previously; in 2011 against Manchester United and in 2018 against AS Roma. In their two previous games against Real Madrid in the US, Barça have come out on top both times: winning 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in 2017 and 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2022.

The Allegiant Stadium, which holds 65,000 fans, will be the venue for the final game of the tour for Xavi Hernández’s men against AC Milan, the third game on the west coast. The two teams have met on two previous occasions on US soil with a 2-0 win for Barça in 2003 in Washington and a 1-0 win for the Italians in 2018 in Santa Clara.

These four games during BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023 are part of the Soccer Champions Tour, a tournament put together by Sixth Street in collaboration with Legends and AEG, and in which, aside from Barça and their four opponents on the tour, Manchester United will also be participating.

The USA, a popular destination for blaugrana preseason

This summer’s tour will be the 14 th in FC Barcelona history to the USA (the first in 1937 was key in the Club’s survival), a country that has become a popular destination in recent years with tours taking place in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, the latter being a joint tour with the women’s team, as well as 2019 and 2022.

In fact, the North American market in a key priority for the globalisation and expansion the Barça brand. Football is undergoing a great period of growth in the USA that trend will hopefully continue with the next World Cup in 2026 taking place on North American soil. Furthermore, FC Barcelona opened a US office in New York in 2016 and continues its efforts to build a greater connection with its existing fans and win more followers and reach agreements with local sponsors to help develop even further the country’s footballing ecosystem.

How American players are helping fuel a renaissance in Italy’s top soccer league

If the U.S. makes a deep run in the next World Cup — or even in this summer’s Copa América — Italy might deserve part of the credit.

Since 2022, a record 10 Americans have played in Italy; six of them were on the 23-man roster for last week’s CONCACAF Nations League final . And five of the 20 teams in Italy’s top-tier Serie A have American owners.

For Luigi De Siervo, the league’s chief executive, that’s a relationship that favors both sides.

“It’s not a coincidence,” he said. “Italian clubs are closely watching the development of soccer in the U.S.”

For the Italians, it has been a financial boon. Since Serie A followed the German Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga by opening a business office in New York two years ago, De Siervo says the league has seen “exponential” growth in its U.S. fan base, growth he credits to the presence of so many U.S. players in Italy.

Luigi De Siervo, chief executive of the Italian soccer league, Serie A.

For the U.S., meanwhile, having players in key roles in the league UEFA says is now the strongest in Europe is making the national team better. USMNT captain Christian Pulisic has a career-high 12 goals in 40 games in all competition for second-place AC Milan while Weston McKennie leads third-place Juventus with nine assists.

“Pulisic literally changed the way AC Milan plays,” Luca Bianchin, a sports writer with La Gazzetta dello Sport in Milan, wrote in an email interview. “For sure he is one of the best newcomers in the league. But also McKennie established himself as a starter for Juventus. Yunus Musah [AC Milan] and Timothy Weah [Juventus] are useful role players too.”

The growing synergy between U.S. and Italian soccer extends beyond the playing field to the executives suites. A quarter of the Serie A teams — Atalanta, Fiorentina, Genoa, AC Milan and Roma — have American owners, who are valued as much for their capital as for their experience in turning the game-day experience, both inside and outside the stadium, into something special.

In addition, Bologna has a Canadian owner, and Serie B sides Parma and Venezia, who both have U.S. owners, are likely to be promoted to the top flight next season, swelling the North American influence.

“The primary attraction for American ownership is, first and foremost, sporting,” De Siervo said. “After all, we are at the top of European football. [But] acquiring an Italian club also means becoming stewards of the great passion of our fans, a passion that represents the distinctive trait of our country and therefore of the excellence ‘made in Italy’ represents.”

A generation ago, Serie A was what the English Premier League is now: the richest, most popular league in the world. In the 1980s and ‘90s it was home to players such as Diego Maradona, Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane, Marco van Basten and Lothar Matthaus. It had the most money and the most challenging competition, which is why its teams won Europe’s top club competition five times and finished second four times between 1985 and 1996.

After seven years of struggle, the unbeaten Galaxy are believing in themselves again

Coming off one of their most disappointing seasons in franchise history, the Galaxy have stormed to the top of MLS through the first six weeks of the season.

March 30, 2024

No other league was even close. And the national team benefited. Of the seven World Cup finals between 1982 and 2006, Italy played in three of them, winning two and losing on penalty kicks in the other.

But the level of spending that made that possible couldn’t be sustained. In the summer of 2002, Fiorentina went into administration because of huge debts its owners couldn’t repay and six months later, the Cirio group, a majority shareholder in Lazio, defaulted on its loans. A year after that, Parmalat, the main backers of Parma, collapsed and in 2004, Napoli was declared bankrupt.

The final nail in the coffin came two years later when executives with five teams were accused of communicating with refereeing authorities to have specific referees officiate their respective fixtures.

Serie A was pretty much done.

Then last spring, as Italy prepared to send teams to the finals of Europe’s three main club competitions — the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League — Serie A launched a new campaign, “ Calcio is Back,” built around the Italian word for soccer.

“From a sporting perspective, we can legitimately say that our slogan is even more relevant today,” De Siervo said.

Now the league is looking to continue that momentum.

Weston McKennie of Juventus is challenged by Genoa's Albert Gudmundsso during a Serie A match on March 17.

“Where we need to improve concerns our stadium infrastructure,” he said. “A modern stadium not only allows for increased match-day revenues, but also ensures more engaging television broadcasts. Sport is entertainment in every sense. And this is the point where investments from American owners and their experience in creating modern stadiums will help us.”

Thirteen of the league’s 20 teams play in stadiums that opened before 1967; seven date to before World War II. That makes this season’s average attendance — which was 30,757 entering last weekend, the best league-wide mark since the halcyon days of 1998-99 — even more remarkable.

Bringing Serie A’s infrastructure into the 21st century could boost broadcast revenues as well. In October, the league agreed to a domestic TV deal with DAZN and Sky worth $4.8 billion over the next five seasons, but that’s about half of what the Premier League will earn from its most recent domestic broadcast contract, which runs just four seasons. The Bundesliga and La Liga also outearn Serie A, getting more than $1 billion a season for the broadcast rights to their games.

“The influence is growing,” Bianchin, the Milan journalist, said of American ownership. “However you have to consider that laws and political and cultural habits make it very difficult to reform Serie A and change the habits of our football.

“I am curious to see what is going to change in the next five years. The use of data is a good example. Some American owners use data massively and I am sure this will persuade at least part of the Italian owners to have data analysts and change their vision on sabermetrics.”

Not all the recent news has been good, though. Last fall another controversy engulfed Italian soccer when more than 40 players, including some in Serie A, were linked to an illegal gambling scandal, leading to fines, multiple-month bans and conjuring up memories of the league’s fall from grace.

So is calcio really back? Is Italy ready to lead the soccer world again?

Bianchin isn’t holding his breath.

“I don’t think the league is getting back to its old self,” he wrote. “The level of football we experienced in the ‘80s and ‘90s was too good to be repeated.”

But this level, he conceded, isn’t bad.

2024 women's NCAA Tournament Final Four dates, game times, TV, location, teams and more

The stars will be out on Friday night in the women's Final Four.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark , South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso, UConn's Paige Bueckers and NC State's Aziaha James will all take the court in Cleveland with a trip to the national championship game on the line, and each has their own calling card as they enter the championship rounds.

Clark's story is well-documented at this point , but endlessly impressive nonetheless: She put together a Her-culean effort in Iowa's win over LSU in the Elite Eight, with a 41-point game (and a bit of revenge). Cardoso has been a force in the paint for the Gamecocks, and she'll look to take her game to the next level at the conclusion of the women's tournament.

J ames has exploded in the tournament , capping off brilliant performance after brilliant performance with a 7-for-9 night from 3-point land in the Wolfpack's win over Texas in the Elite Eight. Last, and certainly not least, Bueckers wants to cap off this UConn run with that elusive championship – but she plans to run it back with the Huskies next season should things go south between now and then.
