Iran Travel FAQ

Is it safe to travel to iran now.

In general, Iran is much safer than many from the West might believe.  Most people are genuinely friendly  and interested to know about you and your country, so leave aside your preconceptions and come with an open mind.

Iran is still a relatively  low-crime country , although thefts and muggings have been on the increase in recent years. Keep your wits about you, and take the  usual precautions  against pickpockets in crowded bazaars and buses, for sure much safer than any other touristic city.

Ignore the  media hype , your chances of facing anti-Western sentiment as a traveler are none. Even hardline Iranians make a clear distinction between the Western governments they distrust and individual travelers who visit their country.

Is it possible to use a credit card in Iran?

No. It is not possible. Because of the sanction against Iranian banks, you are not able to use a credit card in Iran so you need to bring cash with you. Alight there are some new solutions for you to open an account and have a local card.

When is the best time to visit Iran?

March, April, and May are in the peak season of the year. Persian New Year starts on March 21st, or 22nd. There are many travelers not just from Iran but also from all over the world who are eager to see Persian ceremonies and the like. For those who like to have a more relaxing time and to stay in cozy places and a more affordable fee, quiet sights, more relaxing time, and less hustle and bustle visits, we do recommend June, July, and August .

Is there any limitation on travel to Iran as an unmarried couple?

No , do not worry at all. There is no limitation for unmarried couples to travel to Iran. They can stay at the hotel in the same room without any problem because the hotel won’t ask about your relationship.

What to wear in Iran?

Obeying Islamic rules including Hijab or Islamic dress code is necessary for Iran. However, these rules are not observed very strictly , especially for tourists and foreigners . You must not worry about maintaining your hijab since in times you have forgotten about it, the maximum penalty will be a request (usually in a kind way) to make it correct.

Is there Internet access in Iran?

Internet access is pretty good with lots of coverage everywhere and for sure cheap . All the hotels, restaurants, and cafes+ in Iran have WIFI so you can access the Internet when you are at your hotel in all cities.

Additionally, Let’s go Iran will give you an Iranian sim card upon your arrival. This way, you will have Internet access in the streets during your tour. If your data is finished, you can ask your guide to help you to recharge it.

Please keep in mind a point regarding the social Apps (Media) in Iran: You can use What's app, Linkedin, and Instagram in Iran easily and without any restrictions. BUT Facebook, Telegram, and Twitter are blocked in Iran. To use them, you need to install apps to bypass the filtering.

What are the extra costs you need to pay during your trip to Iran?

The entrance fee is approximately 1 to 10 US$ per person for each site. Some sites are less expensive and some sites are more expensive.

A very good traditional meal in a good restaurant is almost 7 US$ per person,

You are able to bring your money in Euro or Dollars and exchange your money in the reliable exchange offices in main cities, and at the airports.

Please notice that it is not necessary to pay tips to the persons who meet during your trip in Iran, but if you are interested to pay tips to them, you can pay 10 US$ per day

What can I buy as a souvenir in Iran? Can I buy souvenirs like Persian rugs in Iran?

Because of the rich culture of Iran, you can find various handicrafts there. You will have many options to choose as a souvenir in each city in Iran such as Iranian rugs , saffron , pistachios , and handmade crafts .

  • What are your opening hours? Monday - Thursday : 9am to 6pm Friday : 9am to 5:30pm Saturday - Sunday : 9:30am to 4:30pm
  • Do I have to travel on certain dates? Because all of our trips are tailor-made, you can depart on any date you wish (depending on flights) and for as long as you wish. The itineraries provided on our website are suggestions only and you can change any aspect to suit your tastes and budget. Your destination specialist will be able to provide advice and answer your questions.
  • Will I be travelling as part of a group? No, our tailor-made trips are arranged on an individual basis. This means you are not tied to the wishes of a group and can arrange your itinerary at your own pace. If you are interested in a Group Tour, we do offer a range of departures in small groups of up to 16 people.
  • Isn’t it easier and cheaper to arrange the holiday myself? Many of our clients like the independence that tailor-made travel brings, without the 'regimentation' of organized group tours, but with the reassurance of our professional planning and back-up services. For example, if the flight that we've booked is delayed, it's down to us to re-arrange your travel in the country. When things go wrong, an independent traveller may find themselves putting in a good deal of time re-organising their plans, when they should be enjoying the trip. We also regularly hear from travellers claiming that they can independently organise the same trip for a lower price. Almost invariably it is not 'like for like' and they may find they incur much more expense during their travels.

To say that my trip to Iran was amazing would be an understatement. Tap Persia was the best agency that I could have chosen, they organized everything perfectly for me, my guide Mojtaba was kind and knowledgeable and honestly, I have no adequate words to describe how beautiful my trip was. I spent 8 days covering many cities and came back wanting more! Thank you Rasool and Mojtaba for your kindness and most excellent customer service! I have every intention of coming back to beautiful Iran again! Best, Nasseema Visited May 2022 Tripadvisor

I got TAP Persia from TripAdvisor. This was my first experience and first visit to Iran with my wife. When I contacted this company through one of this company guy named Rasool, I found him very positive and true. He introduced me an other nice person named Shorab, who was our trip organiser. Our visa was done in 2 days with the help of nice lady Sara. Our whole plan was done as İ discussed with Shorab. Our all hotels in 4 different cities, internal transportation i.e VIP bus, domestic flight and 5 star sleeper train were booked by this guy. We didn't find a single problem anywhere. Special thanks to this guy Shorab. Shorab invited us in his office in Isfahan and served us with tea and other items. We met there the whole team of Tap Persia. We found them hardworking, honest with their work, sincere and busy to serve their clients as much as they can. We spent some hours with Shorab in Isfahan and enjoyed with his hospitality. İ highly recommend this company to all those who wants to visit Iran without any hassles and worries. Our best wishes and prayers are always with this company and all their workers. Such an amazing Iranian travel agency. I have found tappersia on Instagram while searching for things about Iran. This 15 days vacation was something I really wanted to do. How amazing this country and people are. Tappersia is what every foreigner needs, to go to Iran. Good and professional staff, very nice, friendly and helpful all the time. Ara was our first tourist guide in Tehran. He was very nice, polite and kind. Always worried about what we would like to see and about our preferences. He has a good historic and cultural background and he is excellent explaining everything about Iran's culture and history. Ebrahim, our second guide. He is an excellent, kind and sweet person. He has that special feeling about what people need to know and like to see. We immediately felt a strong bond with him. Although he is a very nice and funny person he is also serious and professional when he speaks about Iran and its cultural heritage and history. He did everything to make our stay as nice as possible. Not only he was an excellent driver but an amazing tour guide. We will recommend him to every tourist going to Iran. He could read our minds and understand exactly what we want and what our preferences were. Ali was our third tour guide. He took us to the Kerman desert. In our first contact, we immediately realize he was very good at his job. He also worried about our food preferences and allergies. He showed us all the beauties of the desert - precious peal hidden in Iran. Such a fantastic and professional guide as well. We had a wonderful dinner together. We will remember it. Last but not least Moji. He took us to Persepolis, Necropolis and Pasargard. What an amazing way to end our staying in Iran. He was wonderful telling us about how everything started in these beautiful and ancient places. We could see how thrill he was telling us about all the history. Finally a special thank to Tappersia for every single moment we spent in Iran. These have been for sure one of the most wonderful vacations we could have had. Thank you so much to all of you. Most relaxed holiday thanks to TAP Persia. We came in a troubled time so booked everything through TAP Persia just so that we would feel a bit more secure but the experience was beyond expectations. I have never had a more relaxed holiday. Everything was already booked for us; we had a private car picking us up every time we changed places, offering tours and stops in between all this on a very affordable price and always being there for every question we had. Totally recommended!   Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

I had an amazing time due to the amazing service provided by TAP Persia. Since the first contact Maryam and Rasool were super helpful, willing to explain everything we needed and replying in a very effective manner at all times. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and I strongly recommend them to everyone that wants to have a relaxed yet fun and cultural experience. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Before applying for a visa through TAP Persia, I looked up review's to see if they were trustworthy. The many good reviews almost seemed to be good to be true. But after experiencing their service first hand, I can say that they truly deserve the rating. After payment issues, they went ahead with the process anyways. Without a guarantee or anything. A show of faith from their side shows a great mentality if you ask me. So I'm glad I chose them to arrange the Iranian visa/code. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Best travel agency you can find. I travelled for three months in and had the support of TAP Persia at every step of the way. They took care of my visa, my tourist (credit) card and registered my phone after a month. During my travels I could always call or text them about any issue I had. They booked several bus, train or flight tickets for me on short notice. I also got to meet them in person when I was in Isfahan and became really good friends with them. TAP Persia is the best, most professional and friendliest tourist office you can find. You‘ll be in the best hands and won’t have to worry about a thing. I hope to see them again soon! TAP Persia helped me so much on my first adventure in Iran. I didn’t know where to start, but a friend recommended TAP Persia. Before my arrival staff was on call to help me when my flight was delayed. They were flexible to change the “original” route so I could visit the desert and everything I wanted to see without hustle and at a really good price. I did this on a quite small budget. All guides were great! And when I arrived to Isfahan I went to see the the office of TAP Persia and the wonderful people behind it. I’ll be back soon! Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Over the years and despite preferring to do things by myself, I’ve relied and many tour companies on some locations. I’ve chosen TAP Persia and I was not proven wrong. 🙂 paying a lot of money in advance is something I dread, but did. My trust was never misplaced. They helped me with my visa application (that I did in Istanbul), all of my in between cities transportation, hotels and a few guides. The hotels were amazing, the drivers drove good and safe, always kind; the guides super knowledgeable. The few changes I asked for on the ground (a guide where I hadn’t booked one, changes in itinerary, extra space in last train) were done with care and great effort. Never had to beg or insist. I would totally recommend using their services. You are always in contact with them by multiple ways and their representatives are all really nice! Iran is a wonderful destination and TAP Persia does it justice. Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Best time to visit iran.

The climate of Iran is mostly arid or semi-arid, with a subtropical climate along the Caspian Coast. Generally, the hottest month is July, the coldest months are December and January, and the wettest month is January. Tourists visit Iran during the summer months (June - September) for the sunshine and regional festivals, and during the winter months (November - March) for skiing.

Culture and customs

Being one of the oldest continuously inhabited civilizations in the world, modern-day Iranian culture is enriched by centuries of tradition. Years of trade, conquest, and invasion have created a distinct culture with myriad influences from far and wide, resulting in an overriding national identity and culture rich in symbolism. Religion plays an important part in many aspects of Iranian society - the legal and educational systems, dress, marriage, architecture, the arts, and the media are all affected. As Iran is an Islamic nation, visitors can expect to see the hallmarks of Islam throughout Iran; mosques, the call to prayer, strict dress codes, and the observance of Ramadan are the most easily noticed, although there is a complex network of rules, customs, and traditions at play every day.

Although Iran's population is largely youthful and urban-centric, rich Persian artistic traditions are alive in contemporary Iran, with much of the elaborate architecture, cuisine, handicrafts, and popular poetry of Iran having their origins in ancient Persia. Iranian hospitality is world-famous; guests are often touched by the sincerity, politeness, and generosity of spirit of their Iranian hosts. Accepting tea and food is considered polite if offered, as is acting graciously and modestly while visiting someone's home.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With access to some of the world's best produce, prepared following age-old ancient culinary traditions, foodies will love traveling through Iran.

Things to try in Iran

1. Dried Fruit & Nuts

Dried apricots, prunes, dates, raisins, and figs can be bought from shops, street stalls, and bazaars and make wonderful, healthy snacks. Also, you'll be able to find a wide variety of nuts sold by the bag - pistachios, almonds, and walnuts are usually the best picks.

2. Persian Ice Cream

Flavored with orange blossom, rose water, honey, nuts, or saffron, Persian ice cream is different from Western-style desserts. Often made with chunks of cream and wedged between two waffles, don’t miss the chance to try this type of sweet treat.

3. Khoresht

This hearty Persian stew can be found everywhere in Iran and has many variations. Meat eaters will love the split-pea and lamb combination while the eggplant, mushroom, and spinach options will delight vegetarians.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with Afghanistan,   Armenia ,   Azerbaijan , Iraq, Pakistan,   Turkey   , and   Turkmenistan , Iran is located in the southwest corner of Asia. The Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Oman provide shorelines in the north and south, and while Iran lacks a major river system, there are several small rivers and streams throughout the country. Much of Iran’s terrain is mountainous, with most of the population living in the basins, plateaus, and plains. The deserts of Iran are mainly uninhabited, with the exception of a few oases, while the major cities are quite modern, with well-developed infrastructure and housing.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Iran was known as Persia for hundreds of years and has been occupied by people for many centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests that people populated the land here as long as 7,000 years ago, with civilizations and societies developing as the surrounding nations and areas evolved. Persia's fate was very much tied up with the destinies of neighboring countries, so as empires rose and fell (and leaders came and went), Persia was affected by invasions and confrontations with the Greeks, Mongols, Romans, Arabs, Turks, and others.

Under the reign of Darius the Great and Cyrus the Great (during the Achaemenid Empire), the Persian Empire expanded to be the largest empire of the time. During this period, coins were first introduced as a form of currency, building works on Persepolis began and a system of far-reaching highways and canals were built. Islam was brought to Persia around 637 AD; the population slowly adopted the religion and by the 11th century, the majority of the population was practicing Islam. Despite adopting the religion of the conquerors, Persian culture, style, and art was largely preserved, which led to the 'Islamic Golden Age' - a time when Persian literature, philosophy, science, and art blossomed (750-1258).

This time of creativity and prosperity was brought to an end by the Mongols, who invaded in 1219. This invasion proved devastating, with a monumental loss of culture occurring due to the widespread demolition of infrastructure, libraries, and mosques. Famine and violence accounted for a steep decline in population, which was worsened by the arrival of the Plague during the 14th century. Persia was in better shape by the 16th century, with the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736) establishing the modern nation-state of Iran.

Recent history

The Great Persian Famine of 1870 and 1871 accounted for up to 2 million deaths in the region, but Iran's fortunes changed with the discovery of oil in 1908. This discovery also increased interest from other nations wishing to capitalize on this precious commodity. Iran endured many changes in leadership due to invasions and coups during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, leading to the Iranian Revolution. The Iranian Revolution (also known as the Islamic Revolution) took place between 1978 and 1979 and resulted in the birth of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khomeini served as leader until his death in 1989, after enduring the Iran-Iraq war, which was waged between 1980 and 1988. The Iraqi use of chemical warfare during this time caused international fury and led to the deaths of many of Iran's people.

Festivals and Events in Iran

Also known as Persian New Year, this is one of the most important traditional holidays on the Iranian calendar. Heralding the advent of spring, this celebration with Zoroastrianism roots is a time of feasting with family, celebrating in nature, spring cleaning the home, and purchasing flowers and new clothes for the New Year. Many different types of rituals are performed during this time and can vary from family to family, area to area.

Ramadan and Eid

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Iran and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

What is the current situation in Iran?

There are currently serious safety concerns regarding travel to Iran. The safety of our travelers, operators, and team members is our top priority and any future decisions to resume operations will depend on the security of those involved.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iran?

Note: This information is under review due to the current situation in the country.

Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Iran. Please be aware that this can be a frustrating and stressful process, and can take from 6-8 weeks. You will need to allow sufficient time for this and plan any other travel around your Iran trip accordingly. The cost of a visa also varies depending on your nationality and also changes regularly, making it hard for us to advise of the actual cost. But you should plan for it to cost somewhere around 100-180 EUR depending if you get a visa before departure or on arrival.

Iranian visas are issued in a two-step process and this will differ according to your nationality.

  • An authorization code for your visa must be issued by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A visa for your passport must then be obtained at an Iranian Embassy once the authorization code has been issued, or on arrival (depending on your nationality).

If you are traveling on a UK, USA, or CANADIAN passport, please be aware that your visa process can take longer due to government regulations. Please check that you will have sufficient time to obtain a visa before departure.

We are not currently operating in Iran and, therefore not facilitating/processing authorization code applications at this time.

Squat toilets are the most common variety in Iran, although flushable western-style toilets can be found in some tourist areas and hotels. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

What will it cost for a...?

Iran is a relatively cheap place to visit when you eat, shop, and travel like a local. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

  • Basic Lunch = 6USD
  • Cup of coffee = 1USD to 4USD
  • Short taxi ride = 5USD

Tap water is considered safe to drink but due to the high mineral content, visitors should avoid drinking tap water which can cause stomach upsets. For environmental reasons, try to avoid drinking bottled water - ask your leader or hotel where access to filtered water can be found.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Iran?

Iran is a cash economy and recent unrest has made it difficult to access cash. Travellers are advised that travellers’ cheques are difficult to change and non-Iranian debit, credit and cash cards will not work. You are also unable to use commercial banks or money transfer companies to transfer money.

Your Curiosities Answered: Discover More About Your Persian Adventure

The ideal time for traveling to Iran is typically from April to May and from September to early November. However, due to Iran’s vastness, it’s possible to travel there at any time of the year. For example, during July and August, the west and northwest regions like Tabriz, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, or Hamedan are preferable due to cooler weather. These areas can be mixed with classic routes for a varied experience. The months of November to February are best for visiting southern Iran, known for its natural beauty and tourist attractions. Destinations like Qeshm, Kish, Chabahar, and Bushehr are considered must-see places during this period.

The official currency of Iran is the Iranian Rial (IRR). However, in everyday transactions, Iranians commonly use the term ‘Toman’, where 1 Toman equals 10 Rials. Prices are typically quoted in Tomans. For ease of communication, the term ‘thousand’ is often omitted. For example, a price quoted as 50 Tomans is generally understood to be 50,000 Tomans, translating to 500,000 Rials. This informal method of pricing is a standard practice in Iran, essential for visitors to understand to avoid confusion in transactions.

In Iran, credit cards and international debit cards such as MasterCard or Visa are not supported. However, it is easy to exchange money at the airport, banks, and exchange offices in the cities, or you can choose to carry your money in cash. For those who find carrying cash difficult or insecure, there are companies that provide local debit cards.

It’s important to note that some souvenir shops may accept MasterCard , so it could be beneficial to bring your card along when traveling to Iran.

Yes, Iran is known for being both safe and hospitable for tourists. There are no major conflicts or significant security issues that impact tourist areas. Visitors often experience a warm and welcoming attitude from the Iranian people, renowned for their hospitality. However, as with traveling to any country, it’s advisable to be mindful of your belongings and money to prevent petty crimes like pickpocketing. Normal safety precautions, as you would exercise in any travel destination, are recommended to ensure a pleasant and secure visit.

When visiting Iran, popular souvenirs include:

Iranian Carpets and Rugs: Renowned worldwide for their intricate designs.

Miniature Paintings: Detailed paintings depicting ancient Iranian mythology and literature.

Saffron: A highly prized spice used in cooking and medicinal purposes.

Turquoise Jewelry: Exquisite jewelry pieces from the Neyshabur region.

Inlaid Woodwork (Khatam-Kari): Artistic woodwork featuring geometric patterns.

Ceramics and Pottery: Traditional designs often featuring calligraphy and motifs.

Persian Tea and Glasses: Blends of Persian tea with traditional Iranian tea glasses.

Calligraphy Art: Elegant pieces featuring Persian calligraphy.

Rose Water and Herbal Distillates: Commonly used in cooking and as fragrances.

Iranian Sweets: Including Gaz (nougat) and Baklava.

Copper Craftsmanship: Hand-hammered copper works like pots and vases.

Traditional Clothing: Items like handwoven Termeh scarves.

We continue to Vakil complex, Vakil Mosque, Bazar and public bath remaining from his reign. We also visit the colorful Nasirolmolk mosque. We will head to Ghalat, a beautiful sleepy village outside Shiraz, with lots of greenery and natural waterfalls for lunch. Ghalat is very popular with the locals and is an excellent place to hang out with the people of Shiraz and enjoy delicious local cuisine. After lunch, we will head to the waterfalls and have a coffee before returning to Shiraz. Overnight Shiraz.

Day 4: Persepolis – Bavanat

On an excursion day, you will visit the most magnificent city of the ancient world, Persepolis, which is now registered as a UNESCO world heritage site. Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire during the Achemaenian era. The site, 125,000 sq.m. in area, comprises various reception halls and palaces, private palaces, royal treasury and fortifications, where we find the tomb of Cyrus the Great and remains of Achaemenian palaces and edifices. We will continue our excursion by visiting Naghsh-e-RostamLater today; we will drive to the village of Bavanat, the hub of Iran’s eco-tourism, where you can take a stroll in the beautiful nature of the Zagros mountain range. Overnight Bavanat.

Day 5: Bavanat

Sightseeing in Bavanat village for visiting its beautiful walnut forests, Imamzadeh and Qanats that are the traditional system of Iranians for distributing water. (Visiting nomads depends on your travel date, i.e., you can have a memorable experience of nomads living in April and September). Overnight Bavanat.

Day 6: Yazd

Drive to Yazd in the morning; en route, you will visit ancient refrigerators and Abar- Kuh Cypress, the second oldest tree in the world; it is 4000 years old. Siosepol (33-arch) and Khaju bridges are the most famous ones. We enjoy visiting these two interesting bridges, drinking tea at the tea house below the bridge, walking along the river bank or paddling on a boat from one to the other. Overnight Isfahan.

Day 8: Isfahan

In the morning, we start our full-day tour of Isfahan at the UNESCO world heritage site of Naghsh-e-Jahan Sq. Once a royal polo court, this site was the official center of the city when the city was the Safavid Capital (17th Century). We will visit the famous Imam Mosque (Royal Mosque) on the square’s southern side, with incredible architecture and tile-work.

Iran Tour Operator & Iranian Travel Agency: IranOnTour

As a licensed Iranian tour operator and travel agency, IranOnTour is on a mission of taking you to the highlights of Iran’s ancient history, the depth of its rich culture, and in genuine touch with its hospitable people. Need an Iran visa, a tour customized for YOU, or any other travel services in Iran? We’ve got you all covered!

Why Join an Iran Tour Operator for Your Trip

The diversity & vastness.

As the world’s 18th largest country, with countless mementos of Iranian history, a natural diversity and cultural richness that will amaze you, 24 UNESCO heritages, 2 natural world heritages, and 19 intangible heritages, Iran is hard to discover on your own. A local Iran Travel Agency will take you to the bests of all these.

The Booking Limitations

The tourist infrastructure in Iran is different from other places around the world. Online booking of accommodation is very limited, let alone online booking of other services like transportation, entrance tickets, food, etc. So, the support of a local Iranian travel company is vital.

The Small But Vital Details

The truth is, it takes a lot of work to keep a tour coordinated in Iran and details are vital. It is only a local tour operator that knows the whens, hows, wheres and whys that can make major changes in your plans. A single holiday or occasion during which the sites will be closed or the access to food will be limited, for example, can change your whole trip.

A Good Iranian Tour Company for a Tour of Iran

A local Iran travel agency means more safety, more knowledge of the area and its particular features, and direct access to and familiarity with facilities and services. A good local agency will not only have your back from within the country, but it will also dismisses the extra costs that a company based elsewhere will cause you. Because that company is also working with a local one.

Is Licensed

Being licensed under Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism makes a local Iranian Tour Operator reliable. This license makes the tour operator responsible toward you and the services it offers you. But lack of it discharges the company from any responsibility.

Is Experienced

Like in any other business, high experience in the field of incoming tours makes a company more professional, skilled and knowledgeable in creating and operating the best possible tours. In case of Iran, the unique features and infrastructure of the country make the experience and professional level factor vital.

Is Responsible

A good tour company is responsible, towards you, towards its operating team, and towards the region and society it takes you to. If the Iranian travel agency you pick cares about the nature and respects the local communities, it will also be reliable for a nice tour of Iran.

Traveling With IranOnTour, Top Iran Travel Agency

Diversity of tours.

One of the things that makes us stand out from many Iran travel companies is that we’ve used our deep knowledge of Iran to design a wide range of detailed tour packages that cover each and every corner and aspect of Iran. This gives travelers of all tastes and styles options that cater to them.

Tailor-Made Options

You are unique and so are your interests, taste, travel style, timing and itinerary. That’s why as one of the best Iran tour operators, we have made it possible for you to make your tour of Iran as close to you, your preferences and your expectations as possible.

Top-Level Services

On every single tour, we do our best to fulfill the Iranian tradition of being hospitable hosts to you and so go out of our way to provide you with the best, quickest and most professional services possible.

Every Traveler is VIP

We have done our best to consider both your various tastes and Iran’s immense potentials to craft the best possible trips for you. Yet, if you’d like your trip to be different in any way or in any other corner of Iran, we will be more than happy to help you create it. The first step is,  contacting us !

Useful Info to Know Before Your Iran Tour

  • The Iranian Currency
  • What to Pack
  • Sim Card, Phone and Internet
  • Social Media
  • Cultural Norms

Whether you require a visa to enter Iran depends on your nationality. If you do need one for your Iran tour and holiday, you’ll have to apply in advance. You can do it either yourself or leave everything to us. Applying through us means a faster process and a lower chance of getting rejected.   American, Canadian, and British citizens might have a more complicated visa process. For more details and finding out about visa-free travel to Iran or traveling to Iran free trade zones check out our blog . To apply for an Iran visa, please Contact Us .

For joining an Iran Tour and applying for an Iranian tourist visa, being covered by a proper travel insurance is essential. The providers, rates, requirements, and ways to obtain one are different. Our Iran Insurance blog can help you choose one.

The official currency in Iran is the Iranian Rial. But, although the bank notes and goods pricings are written in Rial, the prices are almost always given in Toman (1 Toman=10 Rials). So, if for example a shop keeper charges you 10,000 Tomans for a carton of milk, you should pay 100,000 Rials. Well, that’s still a lot of zeros, right? So Iranians usually even drop 3 more zeros and simply say 10 Tomans.

The most important thing to know before your Iran tour is that wearing a headscarf (hijab) is a MUST for all women. The good news is, Iranian women are liberal and fashionable about it and so can you! What else? Well, both men and women should be wearing modest clothing. So neither can wear shorts in public; and no stringers for men. Although you’ll find Iranian ladies dressing more liberally, I’d recommend loose fitting shirts that cover your arms and pants that come down to your ankles. And if you’re wearing leggings or tight jeans, make sure your shirt is long enough to cover your bottom.

While other languages and dialects are spoken in Iran, the official language of the country is Farsi (Persian). For your Iran tour, besides learning Farsi numerals, there are a few other phrases that will definitely come in handy. Find more at Things to Know Before Traveling to Iran .

A scarf or shawl (women)

Loose and light clothing for travelling in summer

Warm outfits for trips in winter & fall

A piece of warm clothing for early spring

A camera or a video camera to capture your moments

A pocket dictionary for easier communication

A copy of your passport and the visa page

Cash (EUR or USD)

A small first-aid kit

Sun screen, sunglasses & hat

Keeping in touch with family, friends, and loved ones during your Iran Tour is easy. Private phones, Iranian Sim Cards, Wi-Fi, mobile data connection, and fax services at most hotels make communication efficient and reliable in Iran. Using your own sim card means higher expenses and limitations like no access to mobile data. So getting an Iranian SIM Card is a better idea. With these cheap SIM Cards, you can have Internet access almost everywhere in Iran. However, if you are planning to stay in Iran more than 30 days, you must register your cell phone. Plus, Wi-Fi access is also widespread via hotels and Internet cafés. Iran country code is +98. Find out more here .

Like to search about Iran attractions or share your Iran Tour experiences with friends and family on social media or social networking while on the Iran tour? Good news for WhatsApp and Instagram users: there are no limitations. But I’m afraid I’ve got bad news for Facebook, Telegram, Twitter, and YouTube users: it’s not very simple to use your platform! However, where there is a will, there is a way! And the Iranian solution is using VPNs. Our Iran Social Media blog can help you with finding and using a VPN.

Visitors describe Iranians as unbelievably kind and welcoming. These Iranian traits come from the importance of being courteous and open to a guest in the Iranian culture. One example of the Iranian politeness is the sometimes confusing Târof tradition. If a taxi driver, cashier, or shop keeper rejects your money and says it’s his/her treat, it doesn’t really mean that you can just leave and not pay (LOL). It could just be a polite gesture! But if they insist, then you’ve just tasted a piece of Iranian hospitality. Yet, like traveling around any other country, following cultural norms will be considerate and respectful of you. For example, modest dress code and behavior are preferred especially in religious places. Avoid public display of affection and alcohol drinking. Also, since shaking hands with the opposite gender is hit-and-miss in Iran, wait for the other person to offer his/her hand. The safest way for a gentleman is to put his hand on his heart, maybe bow a little bit, and show a bright smile. Find out more here .

The experience our operations team have had on the world’s top summits (in Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, South America, etc.), their love for Iran, and the potential they saw in Iran as a mountaineering destination inspired them to replicate the standard camps they’ve been in on Iran’s top trekking destinations.

The only exclusive and internationally standard camps on the top summits of Iran, Mount Damavand’s south face , Mount Alam Kuh , and Sabalan Mountain , are what give more value to our trekking adventures. But if you are interested in fall or winter ascents, we can arrange that for you!

Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Everything went so smoothly from my initial inquiry to my dropoff at the airport, the company organisation is professional, friendly and very efficient. Roya answered every question I had, ensured my visa process ran smoothly and made helpful suggestions about adding a couple of days to the tour. My guide, Mohammad was amazing – it was like travelling with a friend I’d known for years. He made everything so much fun and interesting. He’s an absolute treasure!

Iran is the heartland of one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations. Historically known as Persia (named for the region of Fars), Iran is a modern nation self-described as an Islamic Republic. Prior to the spread of Islam to this region, the ancient Achaemenid and Parthian dynasties challenged the Greeks and established a flourishing culture. Zoroastrianism emerged as the dominant religious tradition by the time of the Sasanid dynasty, which was overthrown during the 630s by Muslim forces. The area of Iran and Iraq became a central and dynamic nexus for the integration of various intellectual and cultural traditions into a rich new Islamic environment. Under the Abbasid and regional empires that ensued, trade, material culture, literature, and poetry thrived. Arabic and Persian expression set cultural standards for surrounding areas, such as Central Asia and Indian Subcontinent, and beyond. Whereas the inhabitants in the medieval period were predominantly Sunni in their orientation, in the 16th century, the rise of the Safavid dynasty led to a large-scale shift to Shi’ism, which continues to be the basis for Iranian government and society today. All who visit Iran remark on the warm hospitality and utter beauty of the country, challenging stereotypes and geopolitical characterizations. We will learn about the country’s rich history, appreciate unrivaled architectural marvels, savor delicious foods and gain an authentic understanding of the Iranian people.

Faculty guides, the first day of the tour is friday, february 23. in order to arrive by this date, travelers from north american gateways will most likely need to begin their journey on wednesday, february 21, accounting for the crossing of the international date line. travelers from other origin points should book travel to arrive by the early afternoon on friday, february 23., dr. seyed hadi qazwini .

Bayan Tours-3.png

  • Who is leading the tour? Bayan’s vice president and professor Munir Shaikh will be the faculty escort for the tour. He holds an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a specialization in the history of Islamic Iberia (Al-Andalus), and certificates from academic programs in Morocco, Egypt and Spain. He has lived for periods of time in Spain (and Morocco), and is conversant in Spanish. He has taught academic courses on Islamic Spain, Middle Eastern history, Islam, and world history, and led world heritage tours in various countries, including seven previous excursions in Southern Spain.
  • What is the expected group size? Bayan’s tours are focused on providing a well-rounded experience featuring scholarly knowledge, cultural exposure, recreational activities, and free time. Most tour groups are multi-generational and diverse in nature. In addition to historical and contemporary sites of interest, the itinerary includes visits to mosques and other places of worship to accommodate the religious needs of group members. Our group size tends to be in the range of 30-40 participants from North America and beyond. Participants are able to get to know one another and develop bonds of friendship and camaraderie that can last a lifetime. By participating in a tour, you are helping sustain and advance Bayan’s mission as a non-profit educational institution.
  • When is the registration deadline? We are accepting registrations for the tour until March 31, in order to reserve seats on a train, book sufficient hotel rooms, procure entrance tickets to monuments, and ensure other details. You must pay a refundable deposit of $500 per traveler. Deposits are partially refundable through February 15, 2024, however, a cancellation charge of $ 100 per traveler will apply for any cancellation requested 24 hours after time of booking. For other important terms and conditions, please click here. After payment of your deposit, you will receive an invoice for the remaining balance for your party, reflecting any applicable discounts. The balance payment is due no later than April 15, 2024.
  • Is a visa required for U.S. citizens to enter Spain? Bayan’s tours are open to participants who wish to join from anywhere in the world. However, the majority of participants tend to be from the United States. US passport holders do not need to obtain a visa to enter Spain for tourism. This is true for nationals of many other countries as well. However, non-US passport holders are encouraged to check requirements for their nationality and obtain a visa if required.
  • How physically demanding is the tour? Our group will be transported from city to city in a luxury air-conditioned tourist bus. However, in each city, since we will be in the historical centers where buses can't go, we will use the metro or other local public transportation, and occasional taxis, to get around. Even so, there will be a significant amount of walking on most days, on slight inclines and steps. The streets at times will have cobblestones. The walking distances involved at any given time can range from 1/4 to 1/2 mile between rest points. The guides will take into account the differing abilities and health conditions of group members and regulate the pace and intensity of the tour accordingly. Nonetheless, participants should expect to walk roughly 12,000 steps each day (about 6 miles in aggregate) during the first few days of the program, and perhaps 8,000 steps per day during the latter portion of the itinerary. This tour may not be suitable for those with knee, hip or foot pain that could be aggravated by the amount of walking involved. Ideally, all participants should prepare for the tour by walking at least 5,000 steps per day in the weeks leading up to the tour.
  • What type of food will we have on the tour? Spain’s food is a mix of Mediterranean and local traditions. Some dishes, such as paella, reveal their roots in Arab/Muslim cuisines. While the types of vegetarian options have grown in recent years in Spain, most local meat dishes feature pork (we will be sure to avoid any foods prepared with pork or alcohol). During the tour, we will dine at restaurants that serve zabiha halal foods, or at places that offer seafood and vegetarian options. You can expect meals to include Middle Eastern, Turkish and Moroccan dishes at restaurants run by local Muslims, and Italian and other types of dishes more generally. You’ll have the option of sampling various suitable tapas (small dishes) that are routinely consumed in neighborhood establishments..
  • Will you provide more information about the daily schedule and other details? Yes, all participants who have completed their full payment will receive a detailed information packet that includes descriptions of the cities and sites to be visited, the daily schedule, currency exchange, local prayer times, electrical adapters, weather, what to pack, and more.
  • What precautions are you taking with regard to COVID-19? We encourage participants to be fully vaccinated with at least one booster shot for all who are eligible to receive these shots. Travelers may visit Spain for tourism, but must provide either a certificate proving full vaccination, a negative test (PCR or rapid antigen), or a certificate of recovery. Travelers can enter using the EU Digital Covid Certificate or its equivalents. We do not expect to mandate masking during the tour, but we encourage masking whenever possible and according to each individual’s comfort level. For example, when shopping in crowded areas, it would be best to wear a mask. General sanitary practices should be maintained at all times, such as washing hands with soap, using sanitizing gels and wipes, and maintaining a reasonable distance between individuals.
