Tour de France Femmes Stage 7 Preview: The Tourmalet Awaits

To the Mountains! It’s only 90 km, but this will without a doubt be one of the hardest stages of the race.

Stage Seven — Lannemezan to Tourmalet Bagnères-de-Bigorre (90 km) — Saturday, July 29

Riders will begin today’s stage in Lannemezan—an area of many rivers. In fact, eighteen rivers have their sources on the Plateau de Lannemezan or pass through the territory. After a loop around the watery town they’ll head south to take on the two most frequently climbed passes in the history of the Tour de France, Aspin and Tourmalet.

Aspin comes at 60 km. into the race. It’s a category 1 climb at 12 km. in length at an average 6.5 percent grade. And that’s just the warmup.

stage 7 profile tour de france femmes 2023

By the numbers, the Tourmalet climbs 1,267 meters over a 7-kilometer stretch. The summit sits 2,115 meters above sea level. So for Americans, that’s a 4,156-foot climb over ten-and-a-half miles to a peak that rises to 6,938 feet.

There’s nothing like a summit finish, and this one should be especially exciting and intense. Good luck not taking your bike out to the closest big climb after watching today’s stage.

Riders to watch

Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-NXTG) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl–Trek) both show promise on long ascents. Same for Yara Kastelijn (Fenix–Deceuninck). But it could easily be a battle between Vollering and Van Vleuten, which no one would be mad about.

When to watch

This epic stage doesn’t roll out until 10 am ET (that’s 4 pm for the riders!) And they’ll summit right around 1 pm ET. This will be a day. Definitely tune in for the second half.

The Grand Depart will take place in Clermont-Ferrand this edition, with a whole stage looping around the central French city. Stage 4 into Rodez will see a familiar finale, an explosive one after a hilly stage. he final kilometers will see three small climbs but ones that feature gradients hard enough to explode the race. The hilltop finish will see 570 meters at 10%. It will be a difficult day where the overall classification will be played, however it is likely that all will come down to the steep finale where the climbers and puncheurs will battle it out.

Profiles & Route Tour de France Femmes 2023

Stage 5 will finish in Albi, a stage that should see a sprint finish, however with possibilities for the offensive riders aswell. With a mostly downhill profile and a couple of short and sharp ascents, it could also be a reduced sprint, breakaway or late attacks to succeed. GC raids are also possible in such terrain.

Profiles & Route Tour de France Femmes 2023

Stage 6 into Blagnac should be another opportunity for the fast women, it will be the flattest stage of the race and the most likely to be calm. The 122 kilometers between Albi and Blagnac will host the world's best when it comes to the sprints.

The 90-kilometer stage will see the ascent of the Col d'Aspin (12Km; 6.5%) to warm things up, and a very hard summit finish at the Col du Tourmalet (17Km; 7.3%), a day that will be decisive for the overall classification and see the pure climbers fight for the win.

Tour de France Femmes 2023

The Col de Crayssac – 2.3 kilometres at 4.8% – is somewhat lost in the flatness of the first 80 kilometres. Then the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Leur ushers in the next phase. Far from hard either – 3 kilometres at 4% -, but it marks the beginning of a more undulating phase.

The longest stage of the Tour de France Femmes really sets off at the base of the Côte de Colombiès, 136 kilometres into the race. The Colombiès – 6.5 kilometres at 4.2% – is followed by a short climb to Limayrac and a descent to the L’Ayeron river.

The final 20 kilometres of the race are the most intense. The riders conquer the Côte de Moyrazès, Côte de Lavernhe and Côte Saint-Pierre in quick succession. The first is 4.6 kilometres at 5.5% and the second 2.2 kilometres at 7.1% before the route descends in rolling fashion to the demanding final kilometre. The first half rises false flat, the second half climbs at 8.2% to the line.

Lotte Kopecky wins first stage of Tour de France Femmes after gruelling climb

Stage one report: Lotte Kopecky of Team SD Worx won the first stage of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes , taking a solo victory and the overall race lead by 41 seconds from her teammate Lorena Wiebes.

Thank you for joining me on this first stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2023. It’s been a pleasure to follow today’s action with you all and looking forward to more over the coming days. The stage report is coming in shortly…

Who’ll be wearing what jersey tomorrow: Kopecky is top in three classifications: the GC ranking, points and the mountains. Of course, she can only wear one jersey, so she will be in the maillot jaune, while the second placed in points and mountain categories will wear the green sprinters jersey and polka-dot jersey, respectively. Cédrine Kerbaol of Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling will be in the white jersey as top placed youth rider.

Yellow: Lotte Kopecky (SD-Worx) 3hr 03min 59sec

Green: Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance–Soudal–Quick-Step) 36pts

Polka-dot: Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM) 2pts

White: Cédrine Kerbaol (Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling)

SD Worx's Lotte Kopecky celebrates on the podium as she wears the overall leader's yellow jersey after winning the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes 2023.

Stage one top 10

Tamara Dronova (Israel Premier Tech Roland)

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez)

Mavi García ( Liv Racing TeqFind)

Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek)

Kopecky speaks after her win…

“It was something that was on my mind for a long time,” she says with a big grin. “The last three weeks, it was something I was joking about with my best friend.”

Asked about attacking on the Côte de Durtol, she says: “I thought somebody would follow but nobody did.” Kopecky adds that going into today, SD-Worx had two strategies: one involved Wiebes going over the climb first and the other was if Kopecky managed it.

In regards to her team’s propensity to grab a one-two this season, she says: “I’m very happy. It’s amazing. In the team we laugh about it and we don’t understand it ourselves.”

Tomorrow you’ll wear the yellow jersey: “I think it will be something very special and I’m looking forward to it.”

It's an SD-Worx one-two on stage one ...

1. Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) 2. Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx), +41'’ 3. Charlotte Kool (DSM-Fimernich) 4. Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) 5. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step)

Kopecky takes the stage one win!!

Kopecky has taken her first ever Tour de France Femmes stage win. Behind, Niewiadoma tried attacking but it ended in a bunch sprint for the second and third places. Those were taken by Wiebes and Kool respectively.

1km to go: The two chase groups have come back together. Big name sprinters, such as Wiebes and Kool are in there but Kopecky is flying.

3km to go: Kopecky’s lead has grown to around 45sec. There is a chasing group of 10 riders, including van Vleuten, Liane Lippert, Vollering, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, Mavi Garcia and Kasia Niewiadoma. Is Kopecky heading for a win?

6km to go: Belgian rider Kopecky has taken the first QOM points of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2023. She attacked from a group of nine riders when there was about 400m to the ascent. Here are the results for the Côte de Durtol.

1. Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx), 3 pts 2. Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//Sram), 2 pts 3. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step), 1 pt

Lotte Kopecky attacks for the Queen of the Mountains jersey

9km to go: Kopecky attacks from the front group of 20-30 riders. She’s really accelerating away. Here is the excitement we were after today.

Lotte Kopecky of Belgium and Team SD Worx - Protime celebrates at the finish line as stage winner.

11km to go: As they hit the climb, Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) is at the front setting the pace. Lotte Kopecky, Vollering, Wiebes, Kool and van Vleuten are all up there.

12km to go: It’s getting faster and the peloton is fragmenting. Deignan is drilling it on the front with a grimace and Longo Borghini is tucked behind her.

14km to go: The teams are winding up for the Côte de Durtol. There’s an urgency that’s going to cause some splits here. This is what the whole day has been leading towards. The climb is 1.7km and has an average gradient of 7.2%.

Results of the intermediate sprint

1. Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek), 25 pts 2. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Qucik-Step), 20 pts 3. Karlijn Swinkels (Jumbo Visma), 17 pts 4. Maria Confalonieri (Uno-X), 15 pts 5. Marianne Vos (Jumbo Visma), 13 pts 6. Léa Curinier (DSM-Firmenich), 11 pts 7. Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck), 10 pts 8. Anna Henderson (Jumbo Visma), 9 pts 9. Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich), 8 pts 10. Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), 7 pts 11. Elise Uijen (DSM-Firmenich), 6 pts 12. Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx), 5 pts 13. Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek), 4 pts 14. Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich), 3 pts 15. Julia Borgström (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step), 2 pts

21km to go: That intermediate sprint has caused some damage reports Slappendel. She says a few big names, including Elisa Balsamo have been dropped from the peloton.

23km to go: It’s just about 10km to the third-cat Côte de Durtol and the peloton are increasing the pace. There’s a few riders dropping off the back, while the teams at the front will be looking to dispatch as many sprinters as they can on the uphill.

Lizzie Deignan wins the intermediate sprint

27km to go: Deignan has taken the win in the intermediate sprint. She’s bagged the first points of this Tour. Strangely, it didn’t seem like any of the sprinters were interested then.

Crash ripples through the peloton

28km to go: There’s been a crash that’s taken down a number of riders but it doesn’t look to have resulted in anything serious.

28km to go: Lach has been caught. The teams are getting into formation for the intermediate sprint. There was a small coming together between India Granger and Amber Pate earlier but they have re-joined the peloton since. In this video, it looks like maybe their handlebars got locked together.

💥 Small crash at the back of the race between @indiagrangier and Amber Pate. Both have re-joined the back of the peloton. 💥 Petite chute à l'arrière entre @indiagrangier et Amber Pate. 34km to go: After that drop in pace, it’s about to increase again as the peloton approach the intermediate sprint. It’s in about 7km to the start and then uphill from there.

38km to go: Lach’s lead was growing to almost a minute but has dropped towards 20sec as she goes up a false flat. In the second hour of racing, the pace has slowed slightly, bringing the peloton’s average speed 38.6kmph. Are there some saving energy for upcoming intermediate sprint?

45km to go: Polish rider Marta Lach of Ceratizit-WNT has attacked. She has around a 20sec gap.

46km to go: There is a lot of noise around who might take the win today. Lorena Wiebes, with eight wins already in 2023, seems to be a top pick (according to TV commentary and Twitter), but her teammate Demi Vollering is also tipped for potential success (she has 13 victories this year). Outside of SD-Worx, other names being thrown around are Charlotte Kool of DSM–Firmenich and Vos. A lot though depends on whether the sprinters make it up the third category climb with just over 9km to the finish.

53km to go: There are a few small hills coming up, which might encourage a breakaway attempt but for the moment, the peloton is being pretty cagey. My soigneur has just delivered a delicious bowl of noodles and broth to my desk. I will try and juggle eating that and posting updates. Wish me luck.

62km to go: Halfway in and the bunch is tightly packed together. There have been early attacks from Life-Plus Wahoo and Arkea riders but they have all been reeled in. Lidl-Trek, Liv Racing Teqfind, EF Education – Tibco-SV, Team DSM and Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step are setting the pace.

70km to go: This tweet sums up where the peloton are now pretty well. They are heading towards Bas-et-Lazet and have been cycling through a huge forest which looks spectacular from the overhead shots.

🏁74 KM We have no one in the lead following Typhaine Laurance's solo attempt, as different teams take their turn at the front Personne à l'avant depuis l'attaque de Typhaine Laurance, alors que différentes équipes se relaient das le peloton #TDFF2023 #WatchTheFemmes @GoZwift pic.twitter.com/HFhRyGnan6 — Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift (@LeTourFemmes) July 23, 2023

75km to go: The peloton seem to be sticking together for the moment. There has been an update on Benito from her team: she is conscious and on her way to the hospital.

78km to go: Laurance is about to be swallowed up by the peloton after having her 30sec lead cut.

Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek) spoke to Eurosport ahead of today’s stage and has shared her hope to be an “impactful” teammate for Elisa Longo Borghini. Due to being pregnant during the first edition of the Tour de France Femmes , this is Deignan’s debut. She says that although she is not physically in the “top tier”, she is mentally at an advantage. The British rider also says that she did not enjoy the recon of today’s stage and predicts a “fast and hectic” day.

88km to go: Fouquenet gave it a try but couldn’t quite get across to Laurance so is sitting up and waiting for the peloton to reach her. Out front, Laurance has a gap of 32sec.

Mireia Benito abandons

89km to go: Spanish ITT champion Benito has had to abandon following a crash. It seems like the AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step rider clipped the edge of the road and went down heavily in a ditch.

Mireia Benito of Team AG Insurance - Soudal Quick-Step, seen here on the podium during the Durango - Durango Emakumeen Saria 2023, has had to abandon this year’s Tour de France Femmes.

94km to go: Amandine Fouquenet (Arkéa) is trying to join Laurance but the peloton are looming behind. There is around a 20sec gap for Laurance.

The peloton in Clermont-Ferrand prior to the second Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

95km to go: Typhaine Laurance (Lifeplus Wahoo) attacked but her move was followed by the peloton. She tries again and has got a small gap. Behind, Mireia Benito of AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step has crashed and doesn’t look in a good way.

99km to go: With just under 110km to go, Le Deunff is reeled in and the peloton are all back together. Who is eyeing up a chance for the next attack?

100km to go: Tacey has been caught by the peloton but Le Deunff is still out there solo.

102km to go: British rider April Tacey (LifePlus Wahoo) has broken away to try and bridge over to Le Deunff. The Arkea rider has a gap of 30sec to the peloton.

104km to go: Marie Morgane Le Deunff for Arkéa Pro Cycling Team has attacked solo. There doesn’t seem to be any reaction from the peloton though. There is still a long way to go so a solo attack won’t bother them too much at the moment.

107km to go: As always, there are some beautiful looking bikes in the peloton, but Elisa Balsomo of Lidl-Trek is particularly proud of her steed. Take a look at that…

Ladies and gentlemen: my UNICORN bike 🦄 for Le Tour de France 🟡 Here's my new Project One ICON for #TDFF2023 ... the Chroma Ultra-Iridescent and isn't it beautiful?! pic.twitter.com/W2sCz5ULee — Elisa Balsamo (@Elisa_balsamo) July 23, 2023

109km to go: While the start looks calm, the racing is speedier thank it looks reports Slappendel. She’s estimating around 40-50kmph and not much chatting between the riders. As the commentators on Eurosport point out, the road is not conducive to an attack yet as the peloton can see about 4km ahead.

112km to go: Just as I was about to write that the bunch are all sticking together, there was a small attack. A few riders are testing their legs at the front of the bunch. Could we see a breakaway forming?

115km to go: While we wait for some more action – and an attack – it would be nice to share that there are a few birthdays today. So far I’ve seen that Esmée Peperkamp(Team DSM) and Norwegian champion Susanne AnderseN (Uno-X) are both celebrating their birthday.

120km to go: Almost half of the peloton is made up of debutants. Of the 154 riders, 72 of them are taking part in their first Tour. Dutch riders make for the biggest contingent, with 27 riders, ahead of the French (21) and Italians (19).

They're racing in stage one!

123km to go: Race director and former pro-cyclist, Marion Rousse, has waved the flag and the racing is officially underway. What is going to happen? Email or tweet me your thoughts.

Some thoughts from Iris: Former pro-rider, and absolute delight, Iris Slappendel is back on the motorbike for Eurosport and has been talking of her excitement for this year’s edition of the Tour de France Femme. She predicts that today will be a “nervous, chaotic stage with a tricky final.”

Over eight day’s worth of racing , the peloton will face one mountain stage , two hilly stages , four flat stages and an individual time trial to finish. You can see the full route in the image below.

Stage one of the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes is underway

The riders are off and have a neutralised 7.7km to warm them up. Last year’s winner, Annemiek van Vleuten of Movistar is up front, as expected, along with the other big names, such as Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek).

Here is how today’s stage profile looks:

Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2023

Welcome to the second ever Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. This year’s edition will feature 154 riders representing 22 different teams as they pedal their way along 956 kilometres of road over eight days. Today’s 123.8km stage will see the peloton roll out of Clermont-Ferrand in a day that might be suited to the sprinters.

Ahead of the start of the Tour de France Femmes 2023, my colleague, Jeremy Whittle has written some words on what we can expect:

The 2023 edition is bigger, more adventurous and, with the inclusion of the Pyrenees and a time trial, a far sterner test. After an opening stage that loops out and back from Clermont-Ferrand, the peloton heads south into the hills of Cantal, Correze, Dordogne and Tarn with finishes in Mauriac, Montignac-Lascaux, Rodez and Albi.

After a flatter stage to Blagnac, in the suburbs of Toulouse, next Saturday’s Pyrenean stage takes in the climb of the Col d’Aspin before the 17km haul to the 2,110 metre summit of the Tourmalet.

Veronica Ewers next to her had some late mechanical problems yesterday, but was able to make it back towards the front and should still be heavily involved in the GC battle.

Alison Jackson Veronica Ewers Tour de France femmes 2023 stage 3

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) has just taken the stage for her second day in the maillot jaune and today she is fully kitted out in the all yellow skin suit.

The riders are nearly all lined up ahead of the big start of stage 3.

Here's a final look at the 147.2km profile before we get started. Five categorised climbs are littered along the route, but it should still be a day for the sprinters. Expect Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) to get into any break that forms to try and defend and build on her lead in the QOM classification.

Profiles for stages of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes

Stage 3 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes is underway! We'll have a neutralised period of riding before the flag is dropped at 13:35 CEST.

Here's the typical start line selfie by yesterday's stage winner, Liane Lippert (Movistar) and our four jersey wearers: Ashleigh Moolman (AG Insurance-Soudal QuickStep), Kopecky, Kastelijn and Kerbaol.

Unfortunately we've had another DNS as Špela Kern (Cofidis) has had to leave the race with a dislocated thumb. 148 riders took the start today.

A look at Kastelijn in the fantastic polka-dot jersey.

147.2KM TO GO

Official start given on stage 3! Attacks start straight from the flag being waved.

Arkéa-Samsic have been the most active team so far, but without success yet. The bunch is still all together.

Kathrin Hammes (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) is the next two try and she has a gap of 10 seconds currently.

140KM TO GO

Hammes now has a 20 second lead.

Another abandonment in the opening few kilometres of the stage.

Here's Kopecky decked out in yellow alongside her SD Worx team before the start.

125KM TO GO

The riders are approaching the first of five categorised climbs of the day: the Côte du Peyroux.

Counter attacks were attempted try and bridge to Hammes, but she remains alone, 1:50 ahead of the peloton.

After our lone leader completes the 4.8km climbs that averages 4% in gradient, she'll have a small descent before getting straight into the second climb of the stage, the Côte de Pératel (2km at 5.3%).

Here's Hammes on her solo adventure out in front. Her gap has increased to 2:05 over the first climb.

Kathrin Hammes Tour de France Femmes 2023 stage 3

120KM TO GO

Hammes cleans up the maximum haul of QOM points over the first climb.

A small group of riders are struggling off the back of the peloton including the lantern rouge, Lucie Jounier (Coop-Hitec Products) who was suffering with abdominal pain yesterday.

Puncture for Megan Jastrab (DSM-Firmenich).

Counter attack out of the peloton from Grace Brown (FDJ-SUEZ).

115KM TO GO

A reaction from behind has brought Brown back into the bunch and reduced Hammes' group to 1:40.

Jounier has now unfortunately abandoned the race after getting dropped early on. 146 riders remain in the race.

The riders are about to go through Saint-Germain-les-Vergnes, where road furniture hopefully doesn't cause any issues.

110KM TO GO

We've had some movement in the polka-dot jersey classification, as Hammes has accumulated five points, Koster has gained three and Kastelijn one point over the first two climbs.

Kastelijn still leads now on eight points, but Koster has moved into second on six and Hammes into joint third with Julie Van de Velde (Fenix-Deceuninck) on five.

Counter attack by Maaike Colké (Arkéa-Samsic) from out of the peloton.

SD Worx domestiques Christine Majerus and Mischa Bredewold will be on duty the majority of the day to protect their sprinter and European Champion, Lorena Wiebes.

Christine Majerus and Mischa Bredewold Tour de France femmes 2023 stage 3

Jastrab and Thalita de Jong (Liv Racing TeqFind)  are back in the peloton after their respective mechanicals.

105KM TO GO

There's been a significant amount of attempted moves, but none have stuck and Hammes still leads solo, albeit with a reduced gap of now only 45 seconds.

The riders are continuing their journey north through Perpezac-le-Noir before turning left and heading west after passing Vigeois.

100KM TO GO

Coryn Labecki (Jumbo-Visma) has moved off the front and attacked for the second time today to try and bridge to Hammes. She's 25 seconds behind her with the bunch a further 15 back.

Small groups are splitting at the back of the peloton.

The reason for Marte Berg Edseth's abandonment earlier was due to illness.

Unfortunately, @MarteEdseth had to abandon the race due to illness. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Marte 💛 https://t.co/SXnkhCNQDS July 25, 2023

Labecki has got 1:00 ahead of the peloton who let her go this time, but she still sits 40 seconds in arrears of Hammes.

Hammes is closing in on the foot of third categorised climb of the day, the Côte de L'Escurotte (2.6km at 4.7%).

Situation remains the same as they hit the climb, Hammes 57 seconds ahead of Labecki, with the peloton a further 43 seconds behind her.

Here's one of the earlier counter-attackers, Grace Brown (FDJ-SUEZ). She wasn't given as much freedom as Labecki and was shut down pretty swiftly from attempting to bridge to Hammes.

Grace brown Tour de France femmes 2023 stage 3

Hammes takes two more QOM points over the Côte de L'Escurotte. She's now sat in second in that classification and only one point behind Kastelijn as Labecki mopped up the other solitary point.

The bunch is closing in on Labecki whose second chasse patate is coming to an end. She tried twice to bridge to Hammes with no success.

The peloton has made that turn after Vigeois and started heading west.

Van de Velde and Amber Kraak (ambo-visma) have both upped the pace as the bunch approaches Hammes' back wheel.

All back together in the peloton with Hammes reeled in. A lot of attacks have started to fly since she was caught.

Mechanical for Morgane Coston (Cofidis) at the back of the peloton.

Canyon SRAM are very active at the front of proceedings. Kopecky is sat towards the front in the yellow jersey and is marking moves alongside Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek).

Alicia Maria Arzuffi (Ceratizit-WNT) is the next rider to attack off the front. She's being reeled in by a small group.

Lauretta Hanson (Lidl-Trek) hits the accelerator at the front, great to see her still able to do so after a hard crash yesterday. Anna Henderson (Jumbo-Visma) is directly behind her, but things are all back together again.

Speeds are very high as of now and up towards 60km/h as the next waves of attacks start. Brown has tried another move, but Riejanne Markus (Jumbo-Visma) shut her down straight away.

Racing calms momentarily as the riders pass the litter zone.

SD Worx hit the front with Majerus. Kopekcy is sat in second wheel with Wiebes right behind her.

Reusser takes over as they navigate a small descent section that precedes the next two categorised climbs.

Here's Reusser getting stuck into her work on the front in the Swiss national champion's jersey.

Marlen Reusser Tour de France femmes 2023 stage 3

Mechanical for Elizabeth Stannard (Israel-Premier Tech Roland).

SD Worx are, quite unusually for them, really taking control on the front with their riders all highlighted by yellow helmets as they lead the team's classification.

Van de Velde attacks off of this SD Worx pace once again in pursuit of QOM points. She's quickly opened up a 10 second gap.

Barbieri is the first of the sprinters to start struggling over the day's parcours which is far from completely flat.

Van de Velde crossed the crest of the Côte des Andrieux first and took the maximum two points, but Kastleijn was unable to out-sprint Koster for the remaining one point.

Kastelijn still leads the QOM classification, but only by one point ahead of teammate Van de Velde, Hammes and Koster.

Kopecky is marking moves herself in the yellow jersey which suggests SD Worx are all in for a Wiebes sprint.

The riders are on the final categorised climb of the day, the Côte de Saint-Robert.

Van de Velde takes the two QOM points and will wear the polka-dot jersey tomorrow. She does well to keep it in the Fenix-Deceuninck team.

Niewiadoma uses the QOM sprint to attack over the top. She's got a gap from the peloton behind her.

Henderson and Reusser are doing the chasing behind for Vos and Wiebes respectively.

Nearly all back together as Niewiadoma's move is stifled by Reusser and Henderson. Van de Velde still has a 22 second advantage alone at the front.

Movistar and SD Worx are dominating positions at the front of the peloton for now.

Van de Velde is building her advantage nicely at the head of the race. She has 44 seconds with 46km left to race.

The peloton has allowed Van de Velde to build a 1:30 advantage at the head of the race, and she'll be quite happy there given her time trial skills. She's often finished right up there in the Belgian TT national champs race which has been won by Kopecky on many of those occasions.

Bit of a mess going on with the Fenix-Deceuninck team car trying to pass through the peloton on a bit of road not wide enough for it.Thankfully, disaster was avoided and they can now get to support Van de Velde.

A look back at the peloton on stage 3.

Front wheel change for Emma Norsgaard (Movistar). Curious to not change the whole bike, but clearly they don't want to mess with the Danish rider's setup.

Van de Velde's gap has gone out to 2:07 with SD Worx coming into full formation at the head of the peloton. They won't want to give her too much of an advantage.

Norsgaard is back into the peloton safely without too much energy wasted.

We've had a crash at the back of the peloton after a swell. Labecki is down and Cecchini was also involved. Labecki is taking a moment and is not yet back on her bike.

Thankfully, Labecki has remounted and can hopefully roll back into the finish safely and recover later today.

DSM-Firmenich have taken up the mantle of chasing with one of SD Worx's domestiques involved in that crash. 2:24 is the gap for Van de Velde.

Van de Velde has been part of Fenix-Deceuninck's clear plan to target the polka-dot jersey over the opening three stages. Her and Kastelijn were on the move yesterday for QOM points and today Van de Velde has kicked on and will wear the famous polka-dots tomorrow.

DSM are doing the most chasing for now, but Reusser is close behind and should be able to reduce Van de Velde's advantage significantly with a big pull on the front.

Van de Velde takes the maximum 25 points over the intermediate sprint.

Wiebes takes the remaining second-place points ahead of Moolman and Kopecky.

Henderson kicks on with an attack after the IS point, but Kopecky jumps straight to her wheel and calms it down again.

Deignan slips off the front momentarily with Boilard, but Canyon SRAM don't let it get anywhere. The riders are on a plateau section which precedes the final descent and flat run to the line.

Are we going to see a late attack from Canyon SRAM in the wind to try and split the peloton?

Splits have formed under the pressure of Canyon SRAM and the acceleration has also reduced Van de Velde's advantage to 1:10. DSM-Firmenich now take over at the front.

Van de Velde is grimacing in pain at the head of the race, but she does still have 1:04 over the peloton.

DSM-Firmenich are really putting on the pace in pursuit of the lone leader. Their sole focus will be placed on delivering Charlotte Kool to sprint glory.

The peloton is coming off of the final descending section and DSM are cutting this gap down very quickly. SD Worx have done well to avoid doing the majority of work as they so often do despite having the strongest team.

It looks as though Van de Velde is close to being caught as another 10 seconds is shaved off her lead, but it's still a very successful day for her and Fenix-Deceuninck as they have kept the polka-jot jersey within the team.

DSM-Firmenich are still working on the front of the peloton for Kool. They've got a fantastic leadout train, but won't want to waste all their riders before the finale.

SD Worx are happily sat in the wheels of DSM for now, but will have to pick their moment to move up safely to give Wiebes a sprinting lane.

Van de Velde still has 28 seconds of a lead. DSM are having to work incredibly hard to bring her back.

Julie van de velde

This is far from over for the Belgian out in front. Slightly confusing that SD Worx have not put their whole contingent of remaining riders to pull her back for Wiebes.

The gap to Van de Velde is going out! She's got 36 seconds.

You can see the pain on her face at the front of the race as tries to hold off this charging peloton.

DSM are still doing the chasing with AG Insurance next to them. What are SD Worx doing?

Here they come, the yellow helmets are showing themselves now perhaps realising that they must contribute if they are going to catch Van de Velde and let Wiebes sprint.

Reusser is on the front now with Kopecky barking orders behind. Bredewold takes over. Can they catch Van de Velde?

We've got a series of roundabouts incoming with a 20 second gap from the leader to the peloton.

DSM come back to the front and the pace is incredibly high in the peloton.

Van de Velde is seriously suffering on her own as she goes under the flamme rouge with a slim nine second advantage. Can she make it?

She's gritting her teeth, but Pfeiffer Georgi has hit the front for Kool.

Here come Lidl-Trek for Balsamo on the right!

Final corner taken and it's 600m remaining for Van de Velde.

The sprint is coming and she's going to be caught!

Kopecky leads out Wiebes and she kicks for the line!

STAGE FINISH

Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx) wins stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes!

What a leadout from Kopecky and the European Champion takes it and breaks Van de Velde's heart.

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) was the closest, but Wiebes was still far ahead enough to raise her arms over the finish line and take her third Tour de France Femmes stage victory. Kopecky crossed the line in third after a tremendous leadout in the yellow jersey.

Here's what stage winner, Lorena Wiebes had to say after winning the third stage:

"Lotte [Kopecky] did such a good job in the leadout, I actually already suffered in her wheel. She brought me perfectly."

"The breakaway was of course still gone with 1 kilometre to go. We took the corner good, all the time I stayed with Lotte and the plan was that she would go and deliver me good and that's exactly how she did."

"I felt Marianne [Vos] start the sprint on the right of me and then I was able to catch her."

"We felt it was not really up to us start the chase because we still have some hard days to go and we want to not let the other girls go full out and DSM did it [the chasing] and we helped towards the end when we felt it was really necessary."

SD Worx have now won two of the three stages and lead both the yellow and green jersey classifications.

"It's a great start, we are really happy with this and we hope to continue in this way."

Here's what second-place Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) had to say after missing being unable to outspent Wiebes:

"At first there was no organisation, but Julie Van de Velde also had a real good moment, she was really strong. once there was pace in the peloton we gained some time back, but in the end she did a really, really gutsy ride."

"In the last three, four kilometres it looked like we were not going to make it, but the speed went up really high and there were several trains trying to get up. DSM did a lot of work and we all tried to be there in the mix and try to stay safe and in the front which wasn't easy."

"It was not easy being there today, so happy to at least contest it. Happy with the work, the girls did a great job all day being attentive for breaks and then still being there for the leadout in the final."

"Of course, you want to try and give your all, but yeah Lorena [Wiebes] was the fastest today."

Vos also spoke on the importance of the Tour de France Femmes:

"You only have to look around and see how big it is, feel the atmosphere. Its beautiful to be part of the Tour de France and it's amazing how the world has embraced it actually. Everyday you suffer, but it's great to be a part of it.

Full results from today's stage via FirstCycling.

DSM-Firmenich kept spirits high after all their work came to a disappointing seventh place finish for Kool. She was unable to find a lane in the final straight and got slightly stuck on the barriers behind Alexandra Mandly (Jayco AlUla).

Questions were raised when Wiebes signed for SD Worx last year on whether her and Kopecky could combine properly in sprints. In stage 1 Kopecky's attack was perfectly timed and Wiebes could latch onto the chasing group that wouldn't cooperate for a 1-2 SD Worx finish

On today's stage Kopecky folded perfectly into a domestique role, chased down attacks and did a seriously good piloting job and full leadout for Wiebes, allowing her to sprint to the team's second victory of the week. Synergy from the two superstars.

Make sure you read Daniel Ostanek's full race report which summarises the day's racing alongside a gallery of the key moments.

It wasn't to be for Van de Velde with the stage victory, but her incredible solo effort did earn her enough QOM points to put her into the lead of the mountain's classification and the polka-dot jersey.

Here's a look at the profile for tomorrow's stage which should be a cracker. It's the longest stage of the race and one that builds in difficulty as the kilometres tick by. The GC riders may want to take the seconds available at that bonus, and the final few climbs could see action in the GC kick off with a punchier rider most suited to the finale.

AP Week in Pictures: Europe and Africa

July 28-Aug. 3, 2023

War continues in Ukraine, during a week in which a Soviet emblem was removed from the shield of the Motherland Monument in Kyiv.

In Moscow, Russia accused Ukraine of a drone attack against a skyscraper located in the business district known as Moscow City, west of the Kremlin.

Hundreds of people rallied in support of Niger’s ruling junta in the capital on Thursday, denouncing France and others who have criticized a recent coup — as the country’s military leaders sought to exploit anti-Western sentiment to shore up their takeover.

In the world of sports, Netherland’s Demi Vollering won the 2023 Tour de France Women’s Femmes.

This gallery highlights some of the most compelling images made or published in the past week by Associated Press photographers in Europe and Africa.
