There’s lots of options for converting (changing) your money, or spending abroad, such as changing cash in-person at a bureau de change (not recommended), using an ATM, or a credit card or debit card abroad – but a prepaid travel card is often one of the easiest and cheapest options – and you can reuse them for all your holidays in the future, or even on the same trip to different countries, spending different currencies. 

We’re big fans of prepaid travel cards here at Nuts About Money, and are only recommending the best – they’re ones we recommend to our friends and family (and readers of course), and use ourselves when we’re able to get away.

If you’re heading off to Europe for a bit of getaway, you’ve got loads of options when it comes to a prepaid travel card – just make sure you don’t use your current bank account and debit card – you’ll be charged hefty fees (we’ll cover all of this below).

A prepaid travel card is similar to a bank card (debit card) that you might use for all of your spending in the UK, except instead of your money coming directly out of your bank account, you’ll top it up with money beforehand (or during your trip) – meaning you’ll simply send Pounds (GBP) from your bank account directly to the card (account).

Once the card has been 'topped-up', you can spend it abroad and withdraw cash from an ATM (cash machine), (e.g. Euros if you’re heading to Europe), meaning that you can save a lot of money in hidden fees and bad exchange rates – and these fees can really add up.

Why? Typically using your high street bank card abroad will mean a fee every time you want to use it, and your money will need to be converted into the local currency every time you use it too – at a very bad exchange rate that the bank sets (which often includes a hidden fee).

Pros and cons of prepaid travel money cards

Let’s run through the pros and cons of using a prepaid card:

  • Cheap way of spending abroad (pay in the local currency)
  • Easy way to spend (make contactless payments abroad)
  • Store multiple currencies on one card
  • Often free to withdraw cash from an ATM (up to a limit)
  • Safe way of spending money abroad (don’t need loads of cash)
  • Protection from fraud (sometimes able to refund a transaction, called a chargeback)
  • Easily block your card if it’s lost or stolen (and get a replacement card)
  • Great for setting a spending budget (no overdraft)
  • Can be low withdrawal limits from an ATM (before fees)
  • Might not be able to use it to hire a car or a hotel (or any pre-authorised transactions)
  • Can’t spend more than you top up (no overdraft like a bank)

A prepaid currency card isn’t your only option, but it’s definitely one of the cheapest (especially with one of the top prepaid travel money card providers). You could also change cash before you go (very expensive), or use a credit card or debit card designed for foreign currency spending (don’t just use any credit or debit card, they can be expensive!).

But with those, you’ll need to do a full application with credit checks, and open a whole new bank account for a debit card. There’s not really much benefit vs a prepaid card (unless you’re travelling a lot, or in the market for a new bank).

Multi-currency prepaid card alternatives

Although you’ve likely heard of an exchange rate, which is how much you get in another currency when you swap (exchange) your Pounds for them (e.g. Pounds for Euros) – depending on where you exchange your money, this rate can vary wildly.

Foreign exchange (forex or FX)

Typically banks and other foreign exchange places tend to set their own exchange rate, which is much worse than the real exchange rate… (it’s how you can often see commission-free advertised, but it’s not really, there’s a hidden fee in the exchange rate).

The real exchange rate (used worldwide) is called the mid-market rate, and this is the rate that banks themselves use to swap money (also called the interbank exchange rate), without any hidden fees involved. It is the rate the ‘market’ sets – where buyers and sellers come together.

Mid-market rate

Technically the mid-market rate is the middle of the buy and sell prices of two currencies (e.g. Pounds to Euros), and so it effectively represents the current exchange rate.

So, if a travel money company isn’t using the mid-market rate (they might say interbank rate), you’re not getting the ‘real’ exchange rate, and you’ll be paying a fee.

European Central Bank (ECB) rate

In Europe, the European Central Bank (an organisation that is intended to look after the finances of all the countries in Europe that use the Euro, similar to the Bank of England in the UK), set an exchange rate too, called the European Central Bank rate. 

You could think of this as another official rate, just for Euros, although you’ll never actually be able to get this rate – but the closer to it, the more money you’ll save.

There’s also something called the Mastercard rate, which as you’ve probably guessed, is the rate the company Mastercard sets – they’re a very big company who provides cards for banks and other financial companies for their customers to use (e.g. a bank debit card). Another similar company is Visa.

And similar to the mid-market rate, they set an exchange rate which is set on their cards for foreign exchange. 

They take a small fee within this rate, so it will always be slightly higher than the mid-market rate. And, companies using Mastercard services (e.g. to give their customers cards), can choose to either add their own fee on, or add no fees and pass on the exact exchange rate.

So, if you see a bank saying you’ll get the Mastercard rate, that means they haven’t added any extra fees and are passing the lowest rate possible they can get (with Mastercard) onto you. 

This rate will be one of the cheapest you'll be able to get. Just make sure they haven't added any commission on top.

The topic we’re all here for, how much do you actually pay with prepaid travel cards? We’ve covered the exchange rates above, and typically this is the main fee you’ll pay (if there is a fee hidden in the exchange rate).

However, there are some other fees to be aware of, depending on which card you choose, let’s run through all the foreign exchange fees:

Note: you don’t typically get charged a fee to spend money (often called foreign transaction fees) with prepaid cards, these are more common on credit cards and and with banks.

As mentioned above, there’s always a fee within the exchange rate, whether it’s hidden or not. Normally, you’ll see this as the mid-market rate, interbank rate or mastercard rate plus a certain amount on top (e.g. the mid-market rate plus 1%).

ATM withdrawal fees

Some card providers will let you withdraw cash for free from an ATM (cash machine), some have a limit on how much you can withdraw for free per month (or a maximum number of transactions before there’s a fee), and others have no limit but will charge for every withdrawal.

This can range from a fixed fee per withdrawal (e.g. £1), to a percentage of the amount you take out (e.g. 2%), or a combination of both.

Producing a card can involve a lot of admin and of course actually producing and printing the card and delivery, so a travel money card provider will often pass this fee onto you – so they can cover their costs if you don’t end up using the card.

This is normally around £5-10, although with some companies it can be free, but there’s normally conditions such as topping up your card beforehand.

Note: if you lose your card, you’ll often have to pay a card replacement fee too. This is typical with all cards, even our recommended options.

Inactivity fee

With some cards, there can also be an inactivity fee, which is a fee for not using the card after a certain period of time. This is normally after 12 months, and a fee per month of around £2 per month.

Note: the best cards we recommend above ( Revolut ¹ and Wise ¹) don't have this fee. You can leave them for as long as you like (until your next holiday).

The great news is it’s super easy to get a prepaid travel card – it’s not like applying for a bank account or a credit card, you can get set up within a few minutes and the card can arrive the next day.

All you’ll need to do is first decide which travel card you’d like (we recommend Revolut ¹ or Wise ¹ as they’re the cheapest, and have easy to use apps for managing your money), and then fill out a few details on their website (or app), prove you are who you say you are with your passport or driving licence, and that’s it.

You’ll need to transfer some money (also called ‘load money’) over from your bank account, or deposit via a debit card, and that’s it. You can start spending online straight away (you can also add your card to Apple Pay or Google Pay) – or wait until your card arrives in the post to start spending on that.

It literally couldn’t be easier.

Are prepaid travel money cards safe?

Yep, it’s perfectly safe to use a prepaid travel card.

The company giving you the card will need to be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), who are the people making sure financial companies are looking after you and your money.

Your money will also be held in a bank account with a very large bank (e.g. Barclays), completely separate from the company’s own money. So, if anything happened to the company such as going out of business, your money could only be returned to you.

Using a card is also much safer than taking out cash when abroad, and keeping cash in your hotel room (or your sock). There’s lots of safety features such as being able to freeze your card (so it temporarily can't be used) and protection from fraudulent transactions if your card was lost or stolen – which you can often do immediately within an app on your phone.

That’s all there is to it. Pretty simple right? You can get a prepaid travel card in just a few minutes, and the card can turn up the next day – you’ll benefit from saving a small fortune on your spending money abroad. Plus, it’s much safer than travelling with cash.

You can also use your card in a huge range of shops, bars and restaurants, just as you would in the UK (with contactless), and withdrawing cash from an ATM can be easy too.

Using a travel money card should be straightforward and stress-free. Where can I get a travel money card?

Travel money cards are available from different retailers and can be purchased and preloaded online, over the phone or in-store, depending on the brand. In the UK, popular brands include Travelex and the Post Office.

Travel money cards vs. Credit cards: What is the difference?

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel money card is that your chosen currency is preloaded before you arrive in the foreign country and you won’t be charged conversion fees. This means you are able to benefit from the most favourable exchange rates, locking it in ahead of time and using the funds at a later date.

Most people who use their credit card abroad do it because it is more convenient. The cost of this convenience, however, can sometimes amount to 3 - 5% per use, depending on the transaction and financial institution. Making a foreign ATM withdrawal with your credit card can incur flat-fees of $5 and up, each time.

This being said, there are some excellent traveller credit cards on the market, so we would recommend users compare exchange rates and transfer fees offered by each provider before making a decision on which card is more beneficial.

How it works

During your trip.

  • The  local currency will be automatically applied  when you pay for something, as long as it’s loaded on your card and you have sufficient funds
  • Reload in real time , fee-free if your balance gets low
  • Stick to daily transaction limits
  • The maximum value of purchases per day is unlimited, however no more than your available balance
  • The maximum amount you can withdraw from ATMs per day is AUD 2,500 or the foreign currency equivalent. Keep in mind most ATM operators have a limit on how much you can withdraw from an ATM per transaction
  • The maximum amount for over-the-counter withdrawals per day is AUD 2,500 or the foreign currency equivalent.

When you’re home

If you’ve lost your Travel Money Card, or you think it might’ve been stolen, we can have an emergency replacement card sent to you anywhere in the world.

You may also be eligible for an Emergency Cash Advance, giving you access to cash within 24-48 hours (often on the same day).

Ordering and collection.

You can pick a collection date when you're ordering your money. Order before 2pm and you can pick up Euros and US Dollars from most Tesco Travel Money bureaux the next day. Other currencies can take up to five days. Alternatively, you can order any currency for next weekday delivery to most of the selected customer service desks.

Please make sure you collect your money within four days of your chosen date. If you don't, your order will be returned and your purchase will be refunded, minus a £10 administration charge.

Exchange rates may vary whether buying in store, online or by phone.

Clubcard Prices apply to foreign currency notes in stock on your date of online purchase. Due to constant market and currency fluctuations, rates on the date of purchase cannot be compared to another day’s rates. The actual rate you receive may vary depending on market fluctuations. Clubcard data is captured by Travelex on behalf of Tesco Bank.

Buying foreign currency using a credit or debit card

No matter how you purchase your travel money, whether it be in store, online or over the phone, you will not be charged any card handling fee by us. However, regardless of your card type, your card provider may apply fees, e.g. cash advance fees or other fees, so please check with them before you purchase your travel money.

Click & Collect cancellations

You can cancel a Click & Collect order any time prior to collection. We'll refund you with the full Sterling amount that you paid for your order, unless you cancel less than 24 hours before your collection date, in which case we'll charge a £10 late cancellation fee.

We are unable to refund any fees charged by your card issuer, so please contact them if you have any further queries.

When you get home, we'll buy your travel money back

Let us turn your unspent holiday money into Pounds. It couldn't be simpler.

Just pop into one of our in-store Travel Money Bureaux when you get home. We buy back all the currencies we sell in most banknote values and also the Multi-currency Cash Passport™. Buy back rates may vary during the day.

It doesn't matter where you bought your travel money, even if it wasn't from a Tesco Travel Money Bureau, we'll still buy it back.

Safety and security is important to us. With Currency Pass, none of your personal information is stored on the card, unlike a credit card which is connected to your financial institution. Your transactions are managed by Mastercard but funds are underwritten by EML Payment Solutions Limited ('EML') ABN 30 131 436 532 , AFSL 404131. In the unlikely event that you misplace your card, you can suspend the card by giving us a call on +61 (2) 8974 0856. We can make arrangements to transfer you money via Western Union. Additionally, as the card isn't linked to your financial institution, you can rest assure that if someone has it, they can't access your accounts back home.

No, Currency Pass works just like your every day debit card. You can simply tap and go for every day purchases or withdraw funds from an ATM. The only time you really need to be online is if you want to manage your funds via our easy to use app or website.

Currency Pass works just like your every day debit cards. You can use it for tap and go purchases, paywave and online shopping. But we've made it just a little bit better by being able to load up to 10 different currencies so that when you're travelling you can spend the local currency and always know how much it's costing you.

Travel Money Oz Currency Pass is a debit card. You can only spend the funds that are loaded onto the card. The best part is, you won't get caught out with hefty credit card fees and interest. You're only spending your money.

We're pretty confident we have most destinations covered however Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions are affected by sanctions, which means that your Currency Card will be declined if you try to use it in these countries. Additionally, all Mastercards will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs. The list of countries in which the Currency Card does not work will be updated from time to time, so please check back here before travelling.

Getting a Currency Pass is easy. You can order a card online via our website (this will take up to 14 business days to receive in the mail) or simply visit one of our stores to take one away immediately.

Our Currency Pass is free to buy - just make sure it's loaded with minimum $20 to get started. We don't charge any fees for issuing and loading your card in store either. (Although, merchant fees will apply if you are using a credit card to load funds). More info on fees and limits can be found here.

Yes, you can get a Currency Card if you are under 18. You will however, need to complete your identity verification in person at your nearest Travel Money Oz store. Only Australian Passport or Drivers License will be accepted as valid ID.

Unfortunately we can only give 1 x card per Currency Pass account.

To buy a Currency Pass online, you must verify your identity against several government sources (100point ID check). If your identification doesn't meet the online requirements, you still may be able to buy a Currency Pass in store if you're an Australian resident. Simply bring in a valid photographic Australian Passport, or Australian state driving license and we can set you up on the spot.

TOP TIPS WHEN USING YOUR CARD

Always select credit when making a transaction (including at ATMs!) and if given the option, pay in the local currency of the destination vs AUD, providing it's loaded on your card. This avoids you paying extra conversion fees (this is often called Dynamic Currency Conversion).

We recommend always paying in the local currency if it’s loaded on your Currency Pass (local currency of the destination). In some situations, ATMs and retailers may offer ‘Dynamic Currency Conversion’ (payment in your home currency). This however, simply allows them to dictate their own exchange rate and may result in you being charged fees associated with a foreign transaction. Spending in the local currencies means you always know what you're paying and have greater control over your funds.

Just like your regular bank cards, for security reasons Currency Cards need to be activated once you've received it. To do this, follow the below prompts...

Easy - go to the login page and enter in your email and password. If this isn't proving to be easy, and you're having a bit of trouble, give us a call on 136195 (or +61 (2) 8974 0856 if you're overseas).

No stress - head to my.travelmoneyoz.com and select 'I have forgotten my password' to reset your account. If you're still having trouble, give us a call on 13 61 95, or if calling overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856

  • How do I reveal my PIN?

You've got 2 x options..

1. By phone - Give us a call on 136 195, or if calling from overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856. From here, press 11 to hear the card services line in English and then press 2 for Card Activation or PIN Assistance. Follow the prompts and enter you card details to hear your current card balance.

2. Reveal via desktop (note this won't work as well on mobile!) - Log into the my.travelmoneyoz.com portal. Click on the Currency Card link at the top of the screen. Reveal PIN is the 5th option.

You can change your PIN number at select RediATM's... but, not all RediATM's support this, so to save you time and effort - log into the Currency Pass portal, click on Currency Card and through to Change my PIN, you'll see the ATM finder where you can type in your suburb or postcode to find your nearest RediATM.

LOADING & ACCESSING MONEY

You have a few options. You can load money onto your card using the Travel Money Oz app, or by logging into your account on our website - from here, you can load via Debit or Credit Card (including using Google or Apple Pay), or via Bank Transfer (using Poli for secure and instant bank transfers), or you can load your Currency Pass in any of our stores nationwide. You can also reload your card with BPAY at any time from your online banking account (2-3 days for BPAY transfers to appear).

Up to 10! They include... USD, EUR, GBP, NZD, CAD, HKD, JPY, SGD, THB and AUD.

If you're heading somewhere and their currency isn't one of the above, no stress - load in AUD (or any of the others) and withdraw the local currency from an ATM. Or swipe/tap as normal and it will convert as you go with each transaction.

We use extra authentication as a security measure when you reload funds. The SMS is sent from your bank, not us. If you can't receive the SMS, you'll need to contact your bank to update your details. As an alternative, try reloading using BPAY, however, if we're a new payee, it's possible your bank still may need to send a SMS.

Received an error during your reload? This means your card has not been loaded (even if you see the funds pending in your bank balance). Please contact us via [email protected] before you re-attempt your transaction.

To start, make sure you're logged into the Currency Pass portal then...

Select Currency Card in the top menu, and Currency Card Settings

Then click on the set default currency button

Once this change is made, any unquoted Bank transfer or BPAY loads will land in the default purse.

The minimum amount you can load is $20 (AUD) but who are you kidding, you'll be spending alot more than that on your holiday.

The maximum amount your can load onto your Currency Pass in one load is $10,000 (AUD). If you need more just speak to us in store.

How quickly do you need the money? Credit / debit card transfers are instantly available. Bank transfers will take 1 business day (Mon-Fri) and prior to 2pm AEST. BPAY will take a little longer, this is on average 3 business days. Alternatively, come and see us in store at one of our 140+ locations for more immediate assistance.

If a purchase cannot be completed because there are not enough funds in that currency on your card and you do have other currencies, the card will automatically convert other currencies to complete the purchase. The transaction will be split across 2 or more currencies and will appear that way on your statement. Read more about this in our PDS.

Log into your account by clicking on the login/register button at the top of the Travel Money Oz website. Once you're in, click on the Currency Card tab, and select Transfer between currencies. Select the currency you wish to transfer from, and to. From here you can enter the amount you wish to transfer. You will then see the amount of the new currency, along with the rate in which the transfer is completed. Don't forget to click "Confirm Transfer" to complete your transfer.

You can check your balance by logging into my.travelmoneyoz.com or through our app. Your balance will be on the home page once you've logged in. Or, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas and you can hear it over the phone.

Should you need to take a peak at the shopping damage, you can view your full transaction history online at my.travelmoneyoz.com or via the Travel Money Oz app. Both of these options also allow you load additional funds and transfer money to other currencies.

If you’re using your Currency Pass for pre-authorisation for a bond payment with a merchant (i.e for a hotel, car hire or cruise), the pre-authorisation amount may not be released back onto your card for up to 30 days. If you pre-authorisation amount hasn't cleared within this period, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Any pending transactions will update as the merchant settles them. Once this happens it will be reflected on your transaction history. Should you need to dispute a transaction please give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Make sure you're using an ATM that accepts Mastercard Always press "credit" If you've entered your PIN incorrectly more than 3 times, your card will be blocked as a security measure. If this happens please give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Every time you use an ATM, it's likely you'll be charged a standard ATM fee, with this, there may be additional charges from that ATM provider where you withdrew money. We've outlined this in our PDS so you're aware. The difference in fees may also be due to the transaction being made in your local currency, versus the currency of the country you're travelling in. We always recommend making purchases in the local currency where possible, and being aware of the ATM fees before you withdrawal cash as the more you use an ATM, the more fees you're likely to incur.

LOST OR STOLEN CARD

  • I have lost my card, or it has been stolen, what do I do?

You have 2 x options here (please promise us you'll action immediately!)

1. You can place a temporary block (or unblock) on your card when you're in your Currency Pass account.

2. Call us 24/7 on +61 (2) 8974 0856 and if your card is lost, we'll suspend it - and if it's stolen, we'll close it to prevent fraud. If you need emergency $$ you'll need to give us a call so we can check you're eligible and let you know where your nearest pick up location is

To order a replacement card, give us a call on 13 61 95 and we can sort you out with your 2.0 card! If you're having issues activitating your card, also give us a bell on the same number.

CANCELLED OR SUSPENDED CARD

  • My card has been cancelled or suspended, what should I do?

  • How do I cash out my remaining funds?

If you've returned home with leftover currency (well done, you!) you have a few options:

Your card is valid for 5 years, so you can hold onto it and use it again next trip. You can transfer any leftover funds to AUD and simply use the card for day to day transactions. You can have the balance transfered back into your Australian bank account. There's 2 x ways you can do this... 1. Online

Login to my.travelmoneyoz.com click on cash out to bank account. We'll need to confirm how much you want to cash out, your ID and your Australian bank details. You will also need to confirm your Mothers Maiden Name and DOB (this must be of the cardholder). This will take up to 5 x business days and you will be charged a $10 fee which will come out of your balance.

Do I have to pass a credit check to purchase a Travel Money Card?

No. We’ll carry out an electronic address verification check based on the information you provide. This will be stored but will not affect any credit rating.

How long will my card take to arrive?

If you order your card online it will be delivered to your home address in two to three working days. If you require a card in a shorter time please check with your local Post Office branch. Exchange rates vary between online and branch.

What do I need to do before I travel?

Before leaving the UK, make sure you have activated your Travel Money Card. Activation can be done through the free Post Office Travel app – download now from the Apple App Store or Google Play . The app allows you to top up, track spend, view balances and freeze spend.

Activation can also be done by calling our automated line on +44(0) 20 7937 0280. Full details can be found on the letter that comes attached to you your card.

How do I get my PIN / Change my PIN?

To get your PIN, download the free Post Office Travel app from the App Store or Google Play , create an account and you can check your PIN wherever you are in the world.

Alternatively, you can call our automated line on +44 (0)20 7937 0280 and select Option 1. Your change of PIN can only be done at UK ATM’s that accept Mastercard and offer the PIN change facility.

Which currencies can I load on my card?

You can load any of the following currencies on to your card. The card can hold up to 22 currencies at once, but they can only be loaded one at a time:

Euro, US dollars, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, New Zealand dollars, Thai baht, UAE dirham, Turkish lira, South African rand, Swiss francs, Polish zloty, pounds Sterling, Chinese yuan, Czech koruna, Danish kroner, Hong Kong dollar, Hungarian forint, Japanese yen, Norwegian krone, Saudi riyal, Singapore dollar or Swedish krona.

Which currency should I load?

We recommend that you load the currency of the country that you’re travelling to. If we don’t offer that currency we recommend that you load pounds Sterling on to your card.

Should I pay in Sterling if given the choice while abroad?

We recommend that you always pay in the local currency and not Sterling. This will prevent high fees and very poor exchange rates being applied at an ATM or retailer. This is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) . We include information about DCC in every card pack.

Using your card abroad

Where can i use my card.

Your card can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted.

Is there anywhere that my card won’t work?

We have to authorise your card immediately which means a small number of locations may not be able to take your card. This includes unmanned petrol pumps, toll booths and on board cruise ships or aeroplanes.

Anywhere I shouldn’t use my card?

We recommend that your card is not used to pay deposits on car hire or used when checking in to hotels that require a deposit. Both of these could lead to funds being held by the retailer, which would prevent you from using them.

Can I withdraw money from ATMs?

Yes you can. You can use any ATM that’s accepts Mastercard. Fees will apply for every cash withdrawal. These fees are detailed online or on your welcome letter. Please be aware that some ATMs may also charge you and this should always be displayed on the ATM screen. We always recommend that you withdraw cash in local currency and don’t choose to pay in Sterling or accept their currency conversion.

Topping up and managing currencies

How can i top up my card with more money.

The easiest way is via our mobile app, which is available to download from the App Store or on Google Play .

You can also top up via our website if you’ve created an account. And you can ask friends or family to top up on your behalf in any UK Post Office branch, too. All they need is your card number.

Can I top up with a different currency to the one I loaded in the first place?

Yes, you can. Our multi-currency card allows you to load any of the 22 currencies we offer.

Do I have to move money from one currency to another?

No, you don’t have to move money. If you have money in one currency and spend in a different currency we’ll automatically move this for you to authorise a transaction. Alternatively, you can move the funds using the "Transfer" icon on the free Post Office Travel app ( App Store , Google Play ) or "Transfer to another wallet" icon if managing your account online .

How can I track my balance?

The easiest way is to use our mobile app. This shows clearly what your remaining balance is in each currency. We do not recommend the use of ATMs to check your balance as they will provide a GBP figure using a different exchange rate. Remember, your balance is held in each currency so is not affected by exchange rates unless you change it to other currencies.

What do I do if my card is lost or stolen?

You need to call us immediately on +44 (0) 20 7937 0280. We’re here 24 hours a day.  

We’ll cancel your card and work out the best way to replace it. A fee may be charged if we need to courier a replacement card overseas.

If you think you have misplaced your card and want peace of mind, you can freeze spend on your card using the Post Office Travel app, available on the App Store and Google Play . You can unfreeze just as easily if you find your card again.

I have money left on my card. What do I do?

You have 4 options available to you:

  • Leave the money on your card for your next holiday
  • Visit any Post Office branch and withdraw the balance over the counter in Sterling. There is a daily withdrawal limit of £300 per day
  • Spend your money in the UK as normal. We will move the money to Sterling every time you pay for something. Anything you don’t spend stays in the currency you have on the card. No fees apply, we just use the day’s exchange rate
  • Call us to ask for a refund. Please note that you will get a better exchange rate by spending on your card or withdrawing cash from a Post Office branch

Not long ago, a man from the U.S. returned home from a trip to Europe to a $143,000 T-Mobile bill, apparently because the phone had not been set up for international roaming, according to an article in The Guardian . Considering that 1.3 billion people traveled globally in 2023, there’s a real chance you, too, may come home to a high cell phone bill, especially if you don't determine your needs (or wants) beforehand.

Although using your smartphone has become a necessary part of international travel , roaming fees alone can be exorbitant, and depending on your carrier, using data outside the U.S. is also at a premium. 

What is the right way to set up your phone when traveling internationally? Here are five tips.

1. Before you travel, talk to your provider

The first thing to do before traveling overseas is to check out your service provider’s policy regarding international cell phone use. Although you may want to reach out a few months before traveling, check back often, as policies can change. You may also want to see what your current contract does and doesn’t allow.

In the past, global roaming was an extra feature you could opt into for an additional fee. However, many service providers now activate international texting, calling, and data features automatically as soon as you use your phone in a foreign country. Just understand that this feature can be pricey, so if you plan on traveling for a long time, find out ahead of time if it’s worth the price.

2. Use temporary data passes

When traveling abroad , you may find you need extra data because you want a higher data speed, the ability to stream HD video, or you’ve reached your data allotment. Providers like T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T all provide temporary data passes, although they have different names — Sprint’s $5 to $10 International High-Speed Data Roaming Pass , T-Mobile’s $5 International Pass , Verizon’s $10 TravelPass , and AT&T’s $10 International Day Pass . 

They each provide a set amount of roaming data that you can use for a certain amount of time for one price. Unfortunately, these temporary data passes are expensive. But If you can’t unlock your phone, they might be your only good option. 

3. Swap your SIM card

Renting a SIM card allows you to make calls or text and use data by swapping out your current SIM card for one compatible with the country you're visiting. When you rent a new SIM card, you’ll get a new number, so you won’t be able to receive calls or texts on your regular phone number. Before you go, make sure to notify family and friends so they can contact you via Facebook Messenger or a chat app instead. Even so, renting a card is generally a much cheaper option than paying for an international roaming service. 

Specialized stores in major airports and cell phone companies often offer SIM card rental. In fact, Amazon sells SIM cards for Europe ranging from around $20-$50, typically for 30 days of use.

Another option is an eSIM card . Unlike the regular SIM cards you remove from a phone, an eSIM is a microchip embedded in the phone’s hardware and is especially useful when you’re traveling internationally. According to AARP , you can purchase data through eSIM providers such as GigSky, Airalo, Nomad and Flexiroam, or you can add an eSIM from a local provider in the country you’re visiting. 

4. Get an international phone

f you think you will make many calls or use your phone extensively while visiting another country, consider purchasing an international phone. These international mobile phones often come with reduced international roaming rates and data. 

5. Other options when traveling internationally

Besides getting a temporary data pass or swapping your SIM card, you can also mix and match other options, such as: 

  • Turning off data roaming in your phone’s settings when you don’t need it. 
  • Downloading maps when you have Wi-Fi or using apps like Apple or Google Maps in offline mode.
  • Shutting off all non-vital apps. When apps automatically update, you are charged if they are still active.
  • Deactivating texting. This stops texts from being billed as data when you're traveling aboard.

Are there any administration fees.

No, we don't charge any administration fees when you order currency from us.

Will I be charged for using my credit/debit card?

No, we don’t charge any extra when you buy foreign currency by card.

Some card providers may charge a cash advance fee and interest for buying currencies. Cash advance fees will not show on your travel money order, but you’ll be able to see them on your card statement. If you’re not sure, you should check with your card issuer.

There is no cash advance fee when you use a Sainsbury’s Bank Credit Card. No interest will be charged, as long as the full outstanding balance on the credit card is cleared during the current billing cycle. If a balance remains on the account at the end of the billing cycle, interest will be charged and may apply to the currency purchased.

Do I get any benefits for being a Nectar member?

When will I receive my home delivery order?

You can select a specific working day delivery date up to seven days in advance. Please note Saturday deliveries are not guaranteed. Also, if you’ve chosen a Monday delivery, Royal Mail may try to deliver on Saturday.

Orders for collection at any Sainsbury's Bank Travel Money Bureau or for home delivery are subject to a maximum value of £4,500 per person per day.

All home delivery orders are subject to a minimum value of £100** and a maximum of £2,500. There is no minimum order value for orders for collection at a Sainsbury's Bank Travel Money Bureau.

How long will my travel money card take to arrive?

We’ll send out your travel money card as soon as you order it, so it should be with you in three to five working days. You can also get a travel money card immediately at our bureaux if you need yours at short notice. 

Can I exchange unused travel money?

Yes, we can buy back your foreign currency. Just bring your unused currency back to a Sainsbury’s Bank travel money bureau and we’ll exchange it back to sterling. Please note that we can buy back notes but not coins.

Travelers are vulnerable: Here’s how to keep your money safe while traveling

Travel activity is on the rise as more Americans are on the go this year and engaging in so-called “revenge travel” to make up for trips not taken during the pandemic lockdown. By all means enjoy these trips, but also remember to stay safe — and that includes keeping your money secure while you’re out and about.

While cards are a staple for financial transactions, there may be circumstances where it’s appropriate to carry actual cash as well. Here are some tips on how to keep your money safe while you enjoy your travels.

  • Travel and tourism accounted for 7.6 percent of global GDP in 2022 ( World Travel & Tourism Council )
  • Attempts at digital fraud have gone up 80 percent from 2019 to 2022, as the number of digital transactions rose during the pandemic. The travel and leisure industry has been particularly hard hit, with a 117 percent rise in digital fraud attempts over this period. ( TransUnion )
  • There were 440,631 reports of credit card identity theft fraud in 2022 ( Federal Trade Commission )
  • Payment card fraud losses worldwide are projected to cumulate to $397 billion worldwide by 2031 ($165 billion for the U.S.), from more than $32 billion for 2021 ( Nilson Report )
  • In 2021, there were about 54,000 cases of credit card fraud related to consumers on vacation ( Federal Trade Commission )
  • Some pickpocketing hotspots globally (based on tourist reviews that mention pickpockets) are Barcelona, Paris and Rome ( money.co.uk )

Stick to credit cards…

One way to stay financially safe while traveling is to use credit cards . They come with zero liability protection in case your card is stolen or compromised, as well as other consumer protections. For one, you can dispute fraudulent charges and billing issues. If you use debit cards, you will have fewer protections and could find yourself on the hook for losses (though you’ll still want to keep a debit card with you for withdrawing cash at ATMs).

Different credit cards offer various travel perks (such as free lounge access, lost luggage compensation and travel insurance), so it can be a good idea to take two or more cards that align with your needs. It’s also smart to have more than one card handy in case you lose one. Cards issued by the Visa and Mastercard networks tend to have wider global acceptance than those issued by American Express and Discover.

As a safety measure, make copies of your cards to store your card information for reference in case you lose your physical cards. Don’t rely on using a mobile wallet rather than your physical cards, in case you lose your phone while traveling.

…But hold some cash, just in case

Even though it’s safer to rely primarily on credit cards, it’s still a good idea to have some cash available as a backup — and not just because it’ll come in handy if your cards are stolen. Smaller restaurants and retailers might insist on cash, and you could need cash to pay for smaller transactions with street vendors. Also, if you’re somewhere off the beaten path, cash is likely to be a more readily accepted mode of payment.

You can pick up cash before traveling by exchanging your U.S. dollars for the currency of your destination, for a fee, at a bank or credit union. At your destination, you can also get local currency at an ATM or at the airport right after your arrival (though, if you have to use an ATM, take the time to find one in a safe location).

That said, when you do carry cash, keep it safe. Opt for a money belt you can wear around your stomach, which can help you store your cash in an inconspicuous manner.

Let your bank know you’re traveling

Before heading out on your travels, notify your bank of your travel plans — especially if you’ll be traveling abroad. That way, it will know not to decline transactions that seem suspicious. You can do this over the phone, by contacting a representative or online.

Keep in mind that banks often utilize fraud prevention measures that could be triggered if they see activity on your card account that isn’t in line with your typical spending patterns. Your issuer could then suspend your account while contacting you to verify the charge, potentially putting you in a tough position while traveling.

Since you don’t want to have a card transaction declined unexpectedly and be left without any means of paying for your purchase, keep your bank informed about your travel plans. Then, when it sees any charges you make while miles away from your homebase, there shouldn’t be an issue.

Set up account alerts

While notifying your bank of your plans, see if you can sign up for credit card account alerts at the same time. When you set up purchase alerts, you’ll get text, email or push notifications whenever your card is used. Then, if your card is somehow compromised and someone uses it for an unauthorized transaction, you’ll know about it in time to take action.

If you get a notification about a transaction you don’t recognize, immediately notify your issuer so that it can look into the matter and freeze the card if necessary.

Freezing your credit may also be a good idea, so that no one can fraudulently open credit card accounts in your name while traveling. If needed, all three credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — allow you to briefly thaw your credit freezes in order to apply for credit. Once the thaw period expires, your credit will be re-frozen, protecting you while you’re away.

Be on the lookout for scammers

Tourists on vacation can be an easy target for scammers, which is why it’s important to be watchful of your belongings and cash.

One popular scam is credit card skimming . This is common at gas stations and other places that have ATMs, as ATMs can be set up to capture your card information and enable scammers to use it for fraudulent transactions.

To protect yourself, prevent people nearby from seeing your personal identification number (PIN) when you enter it at the ATM. Further, don’t give your passport or credit cards as a security deposit to tour operators or others, and avoid overindulging at local bars. Doing so can cause your judgment to be compromised, allowing unscrupulous people to take advantage of you.

Pickpockets also present a hazard to unsuspecting tourists. Based on tourist reviews, popular tourist spots such as Barcelona, Paris and Rome tend to attract pickpockets looking to prey on tourists, so be careful in these types of destinations. Pickpockets may operate alone or in a team, with one person distracting you while their partner looks to take your wallet.

Be watchful when shopping with street vendors too, as they could compromise your credit card or give you incorrect change. And while most merchants are reputable, some may well team up with pickpockets and distract you while their partners ply their trade on you.

Consider getting travel insurance

You may also be wondering if travel insurance is worth it. This sort of insurance offers protection against medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost baggage.

However, note that a number of credit cards also come with travel insurance benefits that protect you from the fallouts of canceled flights (including a potential hotel stay) or lost baggage, assuming you use the card to book your travel. Medical expenses that your health insurance won’t pick up could also be covered by your credit card’s travel insurance.

If you’re on an extended international trip, though, it may be a good idea to take out a separate travel insurance policy. These types of policies are available on a one-off or annual basis, and they can be used to cover any shortfalls between your card’s travel insurance and your medical insurance. Take the time to evaluate any travel insurance or card benefits you already have access to before deciding whether a standalone policy will be worthwhile.

What to do if you’re robbed abroad

As a tourist, you may be vulnerable to being robbed. Be especially careful when you’re in a crowded area, as pickpockets could sense an opportunity to take advantage of you. That said, it may not even be a physical assault that you fall victim to. You could have your card information or other sensitive personal information stolen if you use unsecured public wi-fi, use an ATM with a card skimmer or lose your cards.

To minimize the impact of an attack, don’t carry more cash than you anticipate needing for the day. Also, be careful with your mobile phone, as it contains a lot of information about you, potentially including your credit card and bank information.

In case you do end up getting robbed, immediately contact the local police station and file a report. You should also get a copy of this report for when you file an insurance claim. If your credit card is stolen, get in touch with your bank — and if it’s your passport that thieves get away with, get in touch with the nearest U.S. embassy ASAP.

If your credit card information or other personal information is compromised, it’s also a good idea to keep a watch on your credit report (assuming it hasn’t already been frozen). That way, you’ll know right away if a fraudster takes out credit in your name.
