A review of the 2021 Tour de France

tour de france bewertung

We are days away from the start of the 2022 Tour De France. As beautifully said by a comment I received : “ It’s not just the stage winners or those fighting for the general classification. There are also the lead out men or the team train prior to a massive sprint finish. We also have the grupetto. Injured cyclists and sprinters suffering giving everything they can to complete the race in the time limits. That makes the Tour unique and magical.” What happened in the 2021 Tour De France? Tadej Pogacar took the Yellow Jersey and the KOM Jersey, without the former being under serious threat at any point. His main opponent at the start, Primoz Roglič withdrew from the race early, following a series of crashes. Pogačar’s supremacy was is in no doubt or was it? Jonas Vingegaard , a late addition to the Team Jumbo-Visma, initially meant to assist Roglič, rose to the occasion to finish 2nd in his first Tour De France with Caparaz completing the podium.

The green jersey was a fairytale. After 3 years of struggle and near retirement, Mark Cavendish was given a late ticket to the tour by his team Quick-Step and he did not deceived. He took the impressive tally of 4 stages victories, equalling Eddy Merck’s total record of 34 victories and earned the green jersey by getting over the mountains with every bit of energy he had with the help of his formidable wolfpack.

Finally of superstars classics duo Mathieu Van Der Poel and Wout van Aert entertained us through out the 3 weeks. the Dutch took a stage win and the yellow jersey. Wout van Aert did not wear yellow but his performance will forever be remembered. After sealing a win in the queen stage at the Mont Ventoux, he doubled his wins in the last time trial. As if it was not enough, Wout van Aert took the sprint win at the closing finale, the Champs-Élysées. Wout can really do everything!

Tour de France: Making Sense of Cycling’s Biggest Race

La Course by Le Tour de France

There are only a handful of events in the world that showcase the endurance capabilities of the human body like the Tour de France.

Since its inception more than 100 years ago, the tour has been the premier venue for cyclists on the world stage to stamp their names into the history books as conquerers of the roughly 2,000-mile course and its nearly 200 riders.

From mad sprints through flat lands between mountains to lung-busting climbs in the French Alps and Pyrenees, the 24-day trek, which finishes along the Champs-Élysées, always packs hefty helpings of triumph, disappointment, glory, and scandal.

However, figuring out how the tour works can be a challenge for people new to the sport. There are a bunch of jerseys that mean different things, a point system that awards riders who do specific things remarkably well, and other fine details that can significantly impact the race.

Tour de France Route

How the Tour de France Works

The Tour de France is a 21-stage race that pits teams of riders against each other over 24 days each year, typically in July. This year, all but three days of the tour include a stage. The others serve as rest days to give riders a chance to recover.

Each of the 22 teams participating in the tour includes eight riders who work together to accomplish various goals throughout the race.

Though riders compete in teams, only one rider wins the race. Most riders competing in the Tour de France do not expect to win the race or even a single stage. Their roles are to support their teams’ leaders, whether providing food and hydration or blocking wind by riding in front.

The overall winner of the Tour de France, the winner of the general classification, is the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all 21 stages.

While only one person wins the general classification, there are other titles for riders who specialize in climbing and sprinting, along with honors for the best team and the most aggressive rider.

The Jerseys

The Tour de France awards four conspicuous jerseys to race leaders in each category, including yellow, green, polka dot, and white.

Tour de France Yellow Jersey.

The yellow jersey, or maillot jaune , is the most prestigious jersey of the tour. The leader of the general classification wears the yellow jersey throughout the race. That means the rider with the lowest cumulative time at the end of each day starts the next day in yellow. This jersey can and does change hands multiple times as the race progresses and often favors riders who excel in the mountains and time trials.

The overall winner of the general classification takes home €500,000, or roughly $535,000.

Tour de France White Jersey.

The white jersey marks the best young rider in the general classification. Only riders under 25 years old at the beginning of the year of the race are eligible to wear the white jersey. It functions the same way as the yellow jersey.

The green jersey , commonly known as the points or sprinter’s jersey, goes to the leader in the points category.

Tour de France Green Jersey.

The Tour de France awards points toward the green jersey to the first 15 riders who cross the line of intermediate sprints and the finish of each stage. Stage wins earn the most points. Many riders in the hunt for the green jersey will not attempt to win mountain stages. They save energy for the flats so they can rack up as many points as possible without exhausting themselves.

On flat stages, the winning rider earns 50 points for a stage win. Hilly stages come with 30 points, and mountainous stages offer 20, so it pays to win flat days. Each rider behind the leader down to 15th place also earns points in descending order. For example, on a sprint stage, the second-place finisher will earn 30 points, while the rider in 15th place earns two.

Intermediate sprint and time-trial stage wins are worth 20 points a piece.

The polka dot jersey, a flamboyant favorite of many, goes to the best climber. It also is commonly referred to as the “King of the Mountains” jersey. Like the green jersey, the polka dot jersey goes to the rider who has racked up the most points during categorized climbing sections of each stage, of which there are dozens.

Points vary from climb to climb based on the difficulty of each ascent and are separate from overall points toward the green jersey. Climbs are graded from Category 4 to Category 1, along with the “Hors Category,” or super-category, which are too difficult to grade.

Tour de France Polka Dot Jersey.

The first eight riders who reach the summits of super-category climbs earn points in descending order from 20 to 2. Category 1 climb points go to the first six riders to reach the summit starting at 10 for the winner and falling to 2 for sixth place.

Four riders earn points ranging from five to one for Category 2 climbs. The first two riders to summit Category 2 climbs earn two points each, and the first rider to summit a Category 4 climb earns one point.

Riders can hold multiple jerseys at the same time. If that happens, the leading rider wears the more prestigious jersey, and the others go to the rider in second place.

Last year, Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates walked away with the yellow, white, and polka dot jerseys, while Mark Cavendish snagged the green jersey.

Riders without the honor of a jersey still have other awards to chase, including individual stage victories, the most aggressive rider prize, and the best team classification.

The most aggressive rider wears a red number plate, while the best team rides with yellow number plates.

The Tour de France Course

The vast majority of the race happens throughout France, though it sometimes begins in nearby countries for a couple of stages before crossing over into France.

This year, the tour begins in Copenhagen on July 1 and includes stages in Belgium, Switzerland and, of course, France. By the race’s end, riders will have covered approximately 2,068 miles.

Each stage brings unique challenges that each rider and team must navigate to keep themselves at or near the front of the pack. Tour organizers categorize stages as flat, hilly, or mountainous.

There are two time-trial stages in the Tour de France in 2022. The first kicks off the event on July 1, and the second comes the day before the race’s finish in Paris. These stages involve riders starting one at a time at set intervals over a short distance.

The first-time trial that opens the tour is just more than 8 miles long. The last one stretches out to a little more than 25 miles.

Profile of the final time trial stage of the Tour de France in 2022.

Each rider races alone against the clock to jockey for the position as the fastest rider. Time trial specialists can pull back significant time against their competition by putting the hammer down during these events.

Riders use customized specialty bikes and apparel to reduce aerodynamic drag as much as possible to ensure they save every millisecond. These courses typically involve rolling terrain where riders stay on the pedals from start to finish.

All other stages of the tour begin with a mass start where most riders stick together in a large group, known as the peloton. Whether across flat, hilly, or mountainous stages, riding in the peloton helps riders save energy for the opportune moment when they might be able to attack.

The longest stage of the tour in 2022 is nearly 137 miles. The shortest outside of the two time trials comes on the final day at 72 miles.

Flat stages, also called sprint stages, don’t have much elevation gain, but they make up for it in explosive endings. The flat stages of the Tour de France cater to sprinters, who usually spend the entire day tucked safely in the peloton to protect themselves from wind resistance.

They save their energy for the last part of the stage when they rely upon teammates to get them into an excellent position to erupt from behind and surge to the finish line.

Profile of a flat stage of the 2022 Tour de France.

Mountain stages test cyclists who specialize in climbing and descending. These stages include thousands of feet of elevation gain on extremely steep grades, followed by white-knuckle descents that often see riders hit 40 mph or higher.

Due to the varied nature of these stages, the field of athletes often becomes considerably stretched out, with leading riders working in small groups to push ahead as others lose steam and drop back.

Top riders can use mountain stages to pull away from the rest of the field and gain valuable time toward their overall general classification time. Additionally, the top three finishers of each stage other than time trials earn 10-, 6-, and 4-second time bonuses toward their overall general classification time.

Tour de France analysis: Ultimately, a dull race

This year’s Tour started out dynamic and exciting, but in the end, has been a bit of a disappointment

Tour de France 2021 - 108th Edition - 19th stage Mourenx - Libourne 207 km - 16/07/2021 - Tadej Pogacar (SLO - UAE Team Emirates) - photo Dario Belingheri/BettiniPhoto©2021

If you believed the commentators on Eurosport , you might be tricked into thinking that this year’s race was a Tour de France “back to its best”, and that the whole thing had been packed full of exciting action. Of course, they have to jazz it up a bit, they want the public to turn on to watch the Tour. However, on reflection, it is not so certain that this Tour has been anything special.

The first week was exciting, but that’s a solid fortnight ago, and it almost feels like a different lifetime. That’s the thing with the Tour, it’s a journey around France, and however electrifying the beginning was, you only remember the end, which has been disappointing.

It might be too soon to call this an underwhelming Tour, the stage 20 individual time trial might be just as exciting as last year’s, and it might be the most exciting Champs-Élysées stage since 1989. Emphasis on might, though.

What was set up to be an electric battle all the way to Paris fizzled out quite early on. The time trial on the penultimate day, which would have been incredible if the race for the yellow jersey, or even the podium was still on, will turn into a bit of a procession, a day before the actual procession into Paris.

At the start of today, all four distinctive jerseys had been all but decided. It has been clear that Tadej Pogačar would win the Tour de France effectively since the first time trial on stage 5, and definitely since stage 8. With that, Pogačar automatically wins the white jersey, and his two mountaintop stage wins over the last weekend won him the polka-dot jersey too, almost by accident. No matter the exciting battle for king of the mountain points over the previous days, Pogačar simply crushed that competition too.

Meanwhile, by winning four stages and not facing a coherent opposition in the points race - it just was not enough, Michael Matthews - Mark Cavendish has won the green jersey. This, it must be said, has been a great story, one of the redeeming features of this Tour; yet it is not enough to save the overall narrative from the doldrums.

This has been a race of excellent chapters, rather than an overall excellent book. In the opening, there was dramatic racing in Brittany, crashes, Julian Alaphilippe and Mathieu van der Poel in yellow, that first return of Cavendish to the biggest stage. Since then, there have been flashes of brilliance, but it is always difficult to think of the race as a whole particularly favourably if the battle for top spot on the podium has not been special.

Of course, this has not been Pogačar’s fault, he has merely raced what has been put in front of him. If a healthy Primož Roglič had remained in the race, then it is possible we might have had a Tour that was still alive going into the penultimate day, the same goes if Ineos Grenadiers leaders had not crashed repeatedly early on. At the same time, it is possible that Pogačar would still have ridden away from them all.

Richard Carapaz, Jonas Vingegaard and the rest of the GC contenders have not been able to put up a consistent fight, to take it to the man who looks like the strongest rider in the world right now. Even their tactics have been largely dull, refusing to take the attack to UAE Team Emirates and the maillot jaune, on stages where they could have tried something, such as stage 16 to Saint-Gaudens. Even in the high mountains they have waited until the last climbs to try anything; even if this might have changed nothing, it would have been worth trying something.

It is worth remembering that a second place for Vingegaard would be career-changing, and that this is Carapaz’s second Tour de France, his first as a defined leader for Ineos. Perhaps it is a bit harsh to expect more of them, but it is not unfair to desire a more dramatic Tour.

Nine stages of the 18 so far have been won by just three riders - Pogačar with three, Cavendish with four, and Matej Mohorič with two - with the possibility of the final two stages being won by Pogačar and Cavendish again. Deceuninck-QuickStep have won five stages, in fact, just eight teams have shared all the stage win spoils at this year's race, and Deceuninck and UAE hold all of the jerseys.

Trickle-down economics does not apply in the professional peloton, with an overwhelming majority of teams going home from the Tour empty-handed. This feels like an issue when so many squads rely on this, the biggest race of the year, for all of their exposure. For such a race to be dominated by so few just contributes to the disappointment of a dull Tour.

It has been a tough edition, that is for sure, and riders have spoken of their sheer exhaustion towards the end of the race. Perhaps we expect too much of these human beings, but after 2019's and 2020’s high bars, the 2021 Tour de France has been a bit meh. On to the Vuelta.

Race organizers moved the Grand Départ up a week this year to accommodate the start of the rescheduled 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. The inclusion of two significant time trials for the 2021 route will favor an all-around general classification contender, while GC hopefuls who prefer the mountains are expected to struggle.

Daunting Opening Stages

The Grand Départ takes place in the region of Brittany in Brest for the fourth time, a record for hosting the Grand Départ outside of Paris. To say that the region loves cycling is certainly an understatement. Four Tour de France champions have hailed from Brittany, Lucien Petit-Breton, Jean Robic, Louison Bobet  and the last French Tour de France champion, the Badger himself, Bernard Hinault.

It’s been a painful 36 years since then, with many French hopefuls from Thomas Voeckler to Julian Alaphilippe trying their best but ultimately coming up short in retaining yellow through to Paris. Hinault's last victory in 1985, began in Brittany as well, where he was the victor of the first stage that year. Perhaps the luck will turn around for the home country in the 108th edition next month.

Stage 1 will take the peloton through a 187km postcard tour of the coastal department of the region, with a windy summit up Monts d’Arrée, passing a 17th century chapel to wake up the legs. A punchy, 3-km climb awaits at the finish in Landerneau making its debut in the Tour to award the first yellow jersey.

The highlight of the journey through Brittany will include a double climb up the 2km climb up the Mûr de Bretagne on stage 2, mirroring a similar route in 2018. Beyond Landerneau, the stage 3 finish in Pontivy and the stage 4 start in Redon are also making their Tour debut.

First Time Trial Comes Early

The Tour waves adieu to Brittany, heading to the countryside of Changé for the first race of truth of this season’s route. At 27km, it is the longest first-week time trial held in the Tour since 2008. The region will hold special significance for a popular debutant in the peloton, Alpecin Fenix's Mathieu Van Der Poel . His father, Adrie, won his first of two Tour stage wins of his career here in 1987. Stage 5 will likely establish the main protagonists in the fight for yellow.

Sprints And Mountains Round Out First Week

The sprint finish in Chateauroux for stage 6 has seen its share of thrilling finishes in Tour history. Mark Cavendish celebrated two victories here in 2008 and 2011, and before him Mario Cipollini won in 1998. It is yet to be determined if the Manx Missele will make his return to the Tour, chasing a record 31st stage win.  Should Deceuninck – Quick Step name him as a part of their Tour squad, stage 6 will surely be a target for the sprint veteran. Stage 7 will serve up the longest stage at 248km in the Tour in 21 years! To add some extra spice to the long trek, the route will hope to lure the climbers out of the bunch to battle up the Signal d’Uchon, making its Tour debut, with pitches of up to 18% gradient.

There will be no recovery for the legs the following day for stage 8, as the Tour reaches the first mountain stage of 2021, and the first iconic climb – the Col de Colombière. Julian Alaphilippe will be eyeing this stage, recalling his first Tour stage victory at the Aravis resort the last time the Tour finished here in 2018. The first week ends in Tignes, the sight of the dramatic and abrupt stage cancellation in 2019 when Egan Bernal made his move that would eventually earn him the title as the first Latin American Tour champion. Bernal opted to skip the Tour this season, in turn to race the Giro d’Italia.  2018 Tour Champion Geraint Thomas will lead INEOS Grenadiers efforts in chasing a second Tour victory for him.

Ventoux Looms Large

Expect another thrilling sprint finish for stage 10 in Valence, a town where Team DSM’s Romain Bardet earned his first professional victory at the 2014 Drôme Classic. The Frenchman has will not be present to contest the stage, with the Vuelta a España on his race calendar. Peter Sagan also took a commanding stage victory here in 2018 ahead of Alexander Kristoff and Arnaud Démare. The 3-time World Champion will hope racing three weeks at the Giro d’Italia did not sap too much energy as he battles for another stage honor.

A double helping of the Giant of Provence awaits the riders for the third climbing stage of the Tour for stage 11, five years after a windy visit for the Tour. The climb has since become a Regional Natural Parc. The finish is set in Malaucène after a long and tricky descent off the mountain. The town has celebrated the Tour passing through many times, but only ever hosted an intermediate sprint line in 2013, which Sagan won. Going further back in Tour history to 1955,  Ferdi Kübler experienced a complete breakdown beginning in Malaucène, falling several times up the road to Avignon before eventually retiring from the race.

Mid-Race Sprints, Breakaways, High Altitude

Before establishing itself as a favorite among sprinters like stage winners Alexander Kristoff (2014),  Caleb Ewan (2019), and Mark Cavendish (2008), Nimes was the site of a dramatic finish in the early years of the Tour in 1909. The newspaper headline and organizer of the Tour, L’Auto read, “If it isn’t you, it has to be your brother!” Ernest Paul earned a stage victory here in 1909, breaking a 5-stage winning streak of his half-brother, François Faber. Ewan will hope to rekindle his winning luck here for another stage victory to add to his list of palmarès.

The sixth sprint finish awaits the peloton for stage 13 in Carcassonne, Yaroslav Popovych took a solo victory in 2006, escaping the day’s breakaway with only 3km to go. The 14th stage takes the riders on a rollercoaster journey making their way to the Pyrenees, before finishing for the first time in Quillan. Another Tour debut for stage 15 with a start in Cèret, includes a first stop in the Pyrenees – Orientales area since 2009. Racing fans will recall Thomas Voeckler’s victory in Perpignan. It will be the only time the Tour leaves France in 2021.

Following the second rest day, the tired legs in the peloton will be thankful a hilly stage 16 awaits them in a day that should favor a breakaway. The finish in Saint-Gaudens is where the late Tom Simpson earned the first yellow jersey for a British rider in 1962. The battle for the GC resumes from the bottom of the Pyrenees as opportunities to gain time began to dwindle.  The second half of stage 17 recalls the lightening stage in 2018 that was a mere 65km long, and the first summit finish at Col du Portet won by Colombian Escarabajo, Nairo Quintana. An exhilarating battle awaits up the highest pass in the French Pyrenees, either for a climber hunting a stage win, or the GC contenders fighting for precious seconds.

The Iconic Tourmalet May Prove Decisive

The Tour returns to its capital of the Pyrenees for the start of stage 19 in Pau and the final climbing stage of the 108th edition. Two giants of the Pyrenees are on tap: the Tourmalet and Luz Ardiden, where the final battle for points in the king of the mountain classification will be won. The summit finish on Luz Ardiden was the scene of the dramatic and controversial finish of Bernard Hinault alongside his American teammate, Greg Lemond. The sole American Tour de France champion seem to have held back his efforts in order to keep the yellow jersey on the shoulders of Hinault.  Yet another thrilling finish was that of French favorite Richard Virenque in 1994, who earned a stage victory following what many fans saw as his most beautiful breakaway of his career.

Those sprinters who have survived the mountains, will have a final sprint opportunity on stage 19 in Libourne before the infamous grand finale on the Champs – Élysées in Paris.  The GC contenders will likely spend the day protected in the peloton, and surrounded by their domestiques, saving their legs for the final time trial and battle for the yellow jersey the following day.

Another Penultimate Stage Time Trial

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful wine vineyards of France, the region will host the final 31km race against the clock to determine the winner of the yellow jersey. The course lends itself to the time trial specialists and a thrilling GC battle among contenders like Geraint Thomas and Primoz Roglič who will be eager to erase his memories of a disastrous penultimate stage last season.

Bernard Hinault clocked the fastest time on what was a 59km coarse in the 1978 Tour, earning the first of his five Tour victories, while Jan Ullrich conquered his first stage win ahead of the great Miguel Indurain, clocking an average speed of 50.433km/h on the 63km course in 1996.

Celebrations In Paris

After a celebratory start and parade-like atmosphere for the yellow jersey and other classifications, the Tour will make its grand finale for the 47th time on the Champs-Élyées. The 8 laps around the grand monuments of Paris will take the peloton past the grand Louvre Museum for the third time in recent history before another thrilling sprint finish to conclude the 3,383km across France.

Best road bike in the world : Specialized Tarmac achieves new TOUR top rating

Julian Schultz

 ·  20.10.2023

The new Specialized Tarmac already showed its potential on the first test ride. The measurements from the TOUR lab and GST wind tunnel confirm the positive riding impression.

So far, four competition models have topped the list of the best racing bikes in the world. The Canyon Aeroad , Giant Propel , Scott Foil and Specialized Tarmac SL7 earned the top rating in TOUR by top performance in the four most important criteria. The 1.4 seemed carved in stone, with the symbiosis of aerodynamics, weight, comfort, and stiffness hardly able to be improved upon. But with a great piece of engineering, Specialized is now setting a new benchmark - and giving an insight into the direction that competition bikes are likely to develop.

Tarmac SL8: Perfect symbiosis

Fast, light, stiff, comfortable: The Tarmac SL8 shows no weaknesses in the TOUR test.

Making one of the already best racing bikes in the world even better: That was the challenge faced by Specialized and their chief engineer, Peter Denk . And they stayed true to their philosophy. The SL8 remains, among competition all-rounders, the bike that shows no weaknesses in its exclusive S-Works version. Already during the first test ride on the sidelines of the World Championships in Glasgow, this bike hinted at its potential . The measurements from TOUR’s lab and GST-Wind Tunnel confirmed this riding experience. The bike impresses above all with the perfect interplay of its characteristics.

tour de france bewertung

With its low weight of 6550 grams, the Tarmac accelerates like a bullet and effortlessly sprints up climbs. The exceptionally rigid frame set and the sporty, stretched riding position emphasize the character of this thoroughbred racer. Unlike our test bike in Glasgow, which was equipped with a 3D-printed saddle, the reviewed version comes with a conventional carbon saddle, which is slightly less comfortable. Overall, the SL8 provides a high level of comfort for a competition bike.

Like all competition bikes in the TOUR test, the new Tarmac had to prove its aerodynamic performance in the GST-Wind Tunnel in Immenstaad.

In the GST-Wind Tunnel in Immenstaad , the Specialized bike finally eliminated all doubts: with 209 watts of pedalling power to overcome drag at 45 km/h, the new model is only minimally faster than the SL7 (210 watts). In addition, there are competitors with better aerodynamics or more comfort. However, as an overall concept, no racing bike currently performs better.

The fastest racing bikes in TOUR

The Tarmac SL8 is exactly ten watts behind the fastest road bike in the TOUR test, the Simplon Pride II (199 watts). However, the aero bike from the Austrian bicycle manufacturer is also more than a kilogram heavier and more tightly tuned, which is why it cannot keep up with the agile handling of the Specialized.

In comparison to similar all-round concepts like the Cannondale SuperSix (207 watts) or Van Rysel RCR (207 watts), the Tarmac is almost on par in terms of aero performance. However, both the bike from its US competitor and the novelty from Decathlon’s own brand are also heavier and less stiff.

Simplon Pride II: 199 watts

Expensive Fun

The price tag of the new record holder dampens the excitement. While the S-Works Tarmac SL8 with electronic Dura-Ace and aero wheels from their own brand Roval is slightly cheaper than its predecessor, 14000 euros is still a lot of money for a racing bike - no matter how good it is. Cheaper versions range between 6800 and 9000 euros, but they don’t match the impressive riding experience of the top model.

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8

  • TOUR rating: 1.3
  • Price: € 14000

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8

Weights & Geometry

  • Frame/Fork/Headset Weight: 723/383/58 grams
  • Frame Sizes: 44, 49, 52, 54, 56 , 58, 61
  • Seat Tube/Top Tube/Head Tube: 495/565/159 millimeters
  • Stack/Reach/STR : * 574/389 millimeters /1.48
  • Wheelbase/Trail: 990 /60 millimeters
  • Groupset: Shimano Dura-Ace (2x12; 52/36, 11-30 teeth)
  • Brakes: Shimano Dura-Ace (160/140 millimeters)
  • Wheels/Tires (weights): Roval Rapide CLX II/S-Works Turbo Rapidair 2BR 26 millimeters (front/rear: 1136/1438 grams)

Measurements & Individual Score

  • Bike weight: 6.6 kilograms | 1.3
  • Ride stability: 106 Nm/° | 1.0
  • Lateral fork stiffness: 55 N/mm | 1.0
  • Bottom bracket stiffness: 61 N/mm | 1.0
  • Frame comfort: 156 N/mm | 1.7
  • Aerodynamics: 209 watts | 1.7

The TOUR rating

The TOUR rating is based on what is technically possible and reasonable. For example, we award a rating of 1.0 for weight if the road bike weighs less than 6.3 kilograms. The same applies to criteria such as stiffness and comfort - here, we use what is technically sensible as the benchmark. Making a road bike infinitely stiff is not desirable. While a rating of 1.0 can be achieved in this discipline, the values are capped. The theoretical overall rating for a bike is 1.0; however, since individual criteria such as weight and aerodynamics require conflicting measures in design, the challenge remains high.

With introduction of electronic shifting systems and disc brakes, we have adjusted our rating to account for technological advancements. This also applies to current tires with improved technical properties. Therefore, the new top grade of 1.3 cannot be compared to older bikes that achieved this score with rim brakes and mechanical shifting systems anymore.

Rennspiel auf zwei schlanken Reifen – man fährt also tatsächlich Rennrad.
