Tour de France 2022: collaboration with Manivelle

On the occasion of the Tour de France 2022, we have created a limited series of two N°08 knives in collaboration with Manivelle (Matthieu Lifschitz). Find out more about the collaboration and the artist.

For several years I have been sharing my life between my two passions, cycling and art.

I'm fascinated by the long distance and mountain cycling routes over the many renowned hills of the European countryside and I regularly take part in long distance events that are part of the Brevets de Randonneurs Mondiaux,  like Paris-Brest-Paris, as well as endurance races across Europe like the Transcontinental Race. Over time, the world of cycling has totally blended with my original profession of graphic design and art direction.

My commitment to cycling extends beyond the sport, as I am currently the art director of 200 magazine and I create visual identities and collaborate with various brands and artisans, such as Café du Cycliste, Victoire Cycles, Distance Bike, Helmut Equipement, Classics Challenge and now Opinel.

I was genuinely thrilled to be able to design these two Opinel n°8 knives as a tribute to the Tour du France.

Sublimation dyes:.

The overall look is based on strong graphic patterns, evoking the Tour. It felt good to come back to representing the Tour jerseys, just like in 2017, but with a new contemporary twist.

So, the overall colour code is based on the main Tour jerseys, with the distinction of the best climb, sprint, and of course the leader's yellow.

This graphic creation is free from any risk of uncertain representation, the result is a fun, playful object that speaks with easy-to-understand, statutory symbols.

This creation brings in the notion of landscape, a geographical anchor with a wire treatment taking the form of symbols, topped by the Arc de Triomphe. The Mont Ventoux, symbolises the best climber while other images denote the elements: rain, water, mist.

The idea was to create an object that tells a story, like a totem. A graphic design with a contemporary appeal.

What is your first memory of Opinel?

My first memories of Opinel go back to my childhood. Family lunches by the sea with all the camping equipment, the image of my grandfather holding  it, he used it for a lot of things.

Then, as a teenager, I went to my first summer camp in the high mountains and I remeber the feeling of pride at buying my first Opinel.

Many people think of Opinel as embodying expertise and a brand that's passed on. What do you think the Opinel values are?

In my opinion, the values that Opinel conveys are simplicity, efficacy and tradition.

And in a way, because of its timelessness, its ability to be inscribed in a multitude of memories throughout a lifetime, it's a comforting object to own.

You have just collaborated with Opinel to create two knives in the colours of the Tour de France, how did this meeting come about?

My previous work, which for the most part is anchored in the world of cycling, spoke for me really. My projects could be seen on the internet or in certain publications and Opinel noticed some of them and contacted me.

I was aware from the start of the emotions evoked by both Opinel and the Tour de France. I was so enthusiastic about this project, and keen to suggest different designs to represent the theme.

I was very satisfied with the whole process, which flowed beautifully and was very productive, with everyone involved bringing the skills they were so passionate about.

If you had to summarise Opinel in 3 words?

Timeless, effective, comforting.

Opinel Celebrates the Tour de France With Limited-Edition ‘Yellow Jersey’ Knives

French knifemaker Opinel gets into the spirit of the Tour de France with a set of custom knives any cycling fan would be proud to tuck into their pocket.

Opinel has crafted two distinct folding knives in its signature No. 08 model that capture the spirit of the tour with designs paying homage to the jerseys worn by race leaders, along with iconic landmarks riders pass throughout the race.

The first design, dubbed Les Maillots, features a wooden handle painted with the colors of the jerseys worn by the best sprinter, the best climber, and the overall race leader.

The handle begins in the sprinter’s green near the blade. Then it transitions to the climber’s polka dots in the middle before giving way to the unmistakable yellow of the prestigious maillot jaune.

The second Landmarks design includes images of the Arc de Triomphe, which riders circle during the last stage of the race along the Champs Elysee. Mont Ventoux, a notoriously difficult climbing section of the race, comes next.

The design also features graphics representing rain, water, and mist etched into the handle, and a yellow lanyard as another hat tip to the coveted yellow jersey.

Both include the official Tour de France brand stamp as well.

The Opinel No. 08 has existed as a staple of the brand’s lineup since French knifemaker Joseph Opinel developed it in the 1890s.

It landed as part of a series of knives in varying sizes, but the No. 08 found popularity because of its compact size, which fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The blade measures 3.28 inches. Fully extended, the entire knife stretches out to 7.59 inches. More than 30 million have been sold since it first went to market, according to Opinel.

Opinel celebrates the 2022 Tour de France with limited edition French-made folding knives

Opinel Tour de France edition knives

Landmarks features a stylized interpretation of iconic images of the Tour – the Arc de Triomphe, Mont Ventoux, water, rain, and mist. Built with a classic Beechwood handle with a yellow lanyard, this one is priced at just $29.

Both knives feature a 8.5cm/3.28″ blade length made from Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel, with an overall length of 19.5cm/7.59″. Speaking from experience, the Opinel No. 08 makes a perfect addition to your touring or bikepacking kit, and with Father’s Day just around the corner it could be a handy gift idea for the cycling-obsessed Dad in your life. Opinel’s New Tour de France Knives Sport Creative Race-Inspired Graphics

Since it began in 1890, French-based knife brand Opinel has grown into one of the world leaders in pocket blades , spearheaded by its famed No.08 folding knife, which has been given a plethora of patterns and special editions over the years. Partnering with cycling enthusiast and art director of 200 Magazine , Manivelle, Opinel has unveiled its latest graphic wonders to coincide with the 2022 Tour de France next month.

Now for its sixth year honoring the bike race, the knife brand has released two limited editions, each recognizing a different aspect of the Tour de France just like years past. Last year’s collaboration highlighted the Alpine stages of the tour, while the 2019 edition featured little contours of the riders themselves. For one of the 2022 releases, Les Maillots, Opinel and Manivelle pay homage to another facet of the race: the colorful jerseys. Known for its bright color patterns and strong graphic motifs, the Tour de France gives the race leader a yellow jersey, while the best sprinter receives a green shirt and the best climber gets a jersey with red polka dots.

The new No.08 knife follows suit, featuring all three colorways and patterns, incorporating them in a way that looks cohesive and stylistically appealing. Landmarks, the second release this year, displays both the Arc de Triomphe monument and Mont Ventoux, with symbols to represent water, rain, and mist. To pay homage to the race’s signature color, a yellow lanyard is attached at the base.

Like all of Opinel’s knives, the two Tour de France blades come with a lifetime warranty. Les Maillots is sold in a blue gift box with an official Tour de France sticker, while the Landmarks knife arrives in a kraft paper sleeve, also with a sticker. Both knives are available in limited quantities and can be found exclusively online via Opinel’s website, with Les Maillots going for $55 and Landmarks for $29.

To celebrate the upcoming Tour de France, the world’s preeminent road race, French heritage brand Opinel will be launching two limited-edition No.08 Folding Knives. Designed for knife, everyday carry, and cycling enthusiasts alike, the No.08 Folding Knives will begin shipping on June 13.

Both knives were designed in collaboration with Matthieu Lifschitz, art director for 200 Magazine (a famous French cycling publication) and each comes with unique and beautifully designed handle graphics that highlight classic motifs emblematic of the Tour. 

The “Les Maillots” edition ($55) pays tribute to the iconic jersey colors worn by race leaders. A yellow band at the bottom of the handle represents the yellow jersey of the race leader, a green band in the middle represents the green jersey worn by the best sprinter, and red polka dots at the top of the handle celebrate the polka dot jersey given to the best climber. These graphics are printed on the Hornbeam wooden handle using a technique called sublimation, and each knife is delivered in a special-edition gift box with an official Tour de France sticker.

The “Landmarks” edition ($29) tells the story of the Tour de France through the iconic landmarks and symbols that encapsulate the tour. An image of the famous tower atop Mont Ventoux—one of the Tour’s most grueling climbs—sits at the bottom of the Beechwood handle, and an image of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where the race finishes, is included at the top of the handle. Additional graphics symbolizing the elements of water, rain, and mist are included to celebrate the varying conditions faced by riders. All the graphics are added via pad printing and a yellow leather lanyard pays tribute to the Tour’s primary color. Each knife is delivered in a kraft paper sleeve with an official Tour de France sticker.

Like all Opinel No. 8 Folding Knives, these special edition releases are made in France with high-quality components including Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel blades and the company’s patented Virobloc safety ring. While the graphics are exclusive to this year only, the knives stay true to Opinel’s historic design that dates back to 1890. 

Many of the Opinel employees who hand-crafted these knives will be able to cheer on their favorite riders in person on June 13 when this year’s Tour passes through the company’s hometown of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and speeds through the Opinel roundabout as part of Stage 11.

Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives sizes No6 through No12. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the blade open (safety while in use), it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety on the go).

• Beech is the most commonly used wood for the manufacture of Opinel handles. From France, our beech is hard, durable and easy to work. With a homogeneous appearance, its light color varies from yellow to pink. It is characterized by the presence of numerous small, -dark dashes.
• Yatagan Style:The classic Opinel blade has adopted a Yatagan shape. The Yatagan shape is inspired by a traditional Turkish saber, the toe up. The blade is ground to an exclusive convex profile that ensures the strength of the blade and allows efficient regrinding.
• 12C27 modified stainless steel is anti-corrosive thanks to the addition of chrome and requires no special maintenance. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% provides an excellent cutting edge.

Product Info for Opinel Tour De France Folding Knive Num.8, 3.35in, w/ Virobloc, 12C27 Sandvik SS, Beechwood Handle

Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives sizes No6 through No12. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the blade open (safety while in use), it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety on the go).

• Blade:12C27 Sandvik Stainless Steel
• Handle: Beechwood
• Beech is the most commonly used wood for the manufacture of Opinel handles. From France, our beech is hard, durable and easy to work. With a homogeneous appearance, its light color varies from yellow to pink. It is characterized by the presence of numerous small, -dark dashes.
• Yatagan Style:The classic Opinel blade has adopted a Yatagan shape. The Yatagan shape is inspired by a traditional Turkish saber, the toe up. The blade is ground to an exclusive convex profile that ensures the strength of the blade and allows efficient regrinding.
• 12C27 modified stainless steel is anti-corrosive thanks to the addition of chrome and requires no special maintenance. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% provides an excellent cutting edge.

Opinel Tour De France Sublime Pocket Knife No.8 with ergonomic handle is made of varnished beech wood. The blade (8.5 cm long) is made of stainless and modified Sandvik 12C27 steel. Its blade provides very good cutting properties. The knife is equipped with a Virobloc locking system – it locks the blade in the open or closed state.

Since 1903, the Tour de France has been writing the history of spectacular victories, triumphs and unforgettable cycling champions. The race takes place through the territory where the iconic OPINEL knives are made.

Opinel is a simple structure and carefully selected materials. This French brand is clearly associated with classic folding knives, although nowadays, apart from traditional folding models, the brand offers many different knives.

Ce couteau N°08 décoré sur toute la surface du manche reprend un des emblème du Tour de France en illustrant la traversée d'un village.

Longueur Lame

Acier inoxydable 12c27m sandvik.

L'acier inoxydable 12C27 modifié de Sandvik mis au point pour Opinel est réputé pour son tranchant et sa facilité d'entretien. L'acier inoxydable capable de subir le traitement thermique qui lui donne sa bonne dureté est appelé martensitique. Il a une teneur en carbone au moins égale à 0,40% ce qui permet d'obtenir un tranchant très satisfaisant sans être sensible à la corrosion.Dureté de la lame 57-58 HRC.

La décoration de ce manche est réalisée par procédé de sublimation 3D. Cette technique d'impression permet de recouvrir toute la surface du manche en épousant parfaitement les contours, donnant ainsi un caractère unique au couteau.

Bague de Sécurité

Inventée en 1955 par Marcel Opinel, la bague de sécurité Virobloc équipe tous les couteaux fermants à partir du N°06. Découpé dans de l'acier inoxydable, le Virobloc est constitué de deux parties : une partie fixe et une partie coulissante. En plus du blocage de la lame en position ouverte (sécurité d'utilisation), il est désormais possible de verrouiller la lame en position fermée (sécurité de transport).

Stage 1: A daunting opener

Last year’s first stage was said by some to be amongst the hardest Tour openers ever; one year later, the organizers have decided to follow the same template.

Indeed they have ramped up the difficulty, with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters, some 500 meters more than last time around. The stage will not so much shake off the cobwebs as evaporate them. Starting in Florence as part of the first-ever Italian Grand Depart in history, the riders will have 30 mainly flat kilometers before the first of seven categorized climbs rear up.

The Col de Valico Tre Faggi is the highest on the stage, peaking at 930 meters altitude after 12.5km of climbing. A breakaway is almost certain to form here and, passing over the subsequent climbs of the Côte des Forche, the Côte de Carnaio and the Colle de Barbotto, should be able to further pad their advantage.

The pendulum may well swing the other way over the three climbs located in the final 50 kms. The last of these, the Côte de Saint-Marino, is followed by 25 downhill and flat roads to the finish in Rimini. Much will depend on how the favorites ride the stage but if the big names and their teams go all in, a very difficult first day is in store.

The stage finish is a poignant location for Italian cycling. The 1998 Tour de France winner Marco Pantani died in Rimini in 2004, with this year’s Tour taking place 20 years after that tragic event.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “It’s rare for the Tour de France to start with more than 3,600 meters of climbing — in fact it’s never happened before! — and it’s also the first time that the race has visited the home city of Gino Bartali.

“The succession of hills in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are likely to be the setting for an immediate and testing confrontation between the contenders for the title, particularly the climb into San Marino (7.1km at 4.8 percent), where the race will add a 13th name to its catalogue of foreign visits.”
