Tour de Pologne 2022 – preview and predictions

tour de pologne preview

The Tour de Pologne 2022 starts on the 30th July 2022. This 79th edition will consists of 3 stages for sprinters (1,2 and 7), three hilly stages for puncheurs (3,4 and 5) and one uphill decisive time trial.. This however is on paper and nobody can fully predict the outcomes.

Tour de Pologne stage 1 profile

At first sight, this stage is reserved for sprinters but an uphill raise at 6.7% at around 500m could put some of the heavy sprinters on the back foot. Nothing will be lost though if they are well placed and could still fight back the position lost.

tour de pologne preview

★★★★★ Demare

Any sprinters who would have missed the previous day sprints will be on fire to win this sprints more suited to them.

Tour de Pologne 2022 stage 2 profile

An uphill sprint that will reward the most powerful guy.

tour de pologne preview

★★★★★ Kooij

★★★★ Demare

★★★ Bennett

★★ Cavendish

This is not a day for the pure sprinters. The eventful finish consists of 3 successive categorised climbs followed by a 1.5 km uphill drag that will rejoice the puncheurs and classics riders.

Tour de Pologne stage 3 profile

The last 3 km will be the opportunity for a strong puncheurs or powerful rider to snatch the leader’s jersey.

tour de pologne preview

★★★★★ Hayter

★★★★ Bouwmann

★★★ Vendrame

★★ Kiwatowski

Depending on the race situation, this stage can reward a good climber with decent descending skills. The latter will nevertheless need the backing of a good team as a break away has a good chance of taking it as well

Tour de Pologne stage 4 profile

The 8.3% drag could still punish some rider after a long difficult day.

tour de pologne preview

Not a typical mountain stage with a mountain top finish. There will be opportunity for riders dropped on the climb to make it back in the descent.

Tour de Pologne stage 5 profile

★★★★★ Higuita

★★★★  Carapaz

★★★ Bouwmann

★ Sheffield

The highlight of the Tour de Pologne. An 11.6 km uphill time trial.

Tour de Pologne 2022 stage 6 profile

★★★★★ Sobrero

★★★★Ethan Hayter

★★★ Daan Hoole

★★Antonio Tiberi

★ Jan Tratnik

The opportunity to filter out some spinters will be here but it will depends on the willingness of the teams to take the race on and most importantly the energy and men left.

Tour de Pologne 2022 stage 7 profile

★★★★ Cavendish

★ Aberasturi

The Tour de Pologne predictions:

After suffering a crash, Biniam Girmay was removed from the startlist and he will be missed. Arnaud Demare leads the way for the most famous sprinters with Mark Cavendish . After finally showing some form in Eschborn Frankfurt, Sam Bennett went off the radar and his form will be highly awaited here. Kaden Groves of Team Bike Exchange will also be in play. Even with just one win since joining Team Ineos Grenadiers, Elia Viviani should be considered with these A list sprinters. The fastest man and the one everyone will be wary of remains Olav Kooij though

Simonne Consonni, Phil Bauhaus, Max Kanter, Pascal Ackermann, Stanislaw Aniolkowlski  and Jon Aberasturi are those on the mix to take stage win as well.

There is a non exhaustive list of riders who could take stage win on those hilly stages. The usual classics protagonists will need to mix it up with those fast puncheurs.

We will see plenty of bobbling with Mauri Vansevenant in this race as well as Mauro Schmidt. Both are attack minded riders that also do well in time trials. Andrea Vendrame has the possibilty to be in the mix for 6 of the stages. Much will be awaited from young Felix Gall. After an explosive start of the season, the Ag2r rider suffered at the beginning of the Giro before finding some form in the last week. Nans Peters is another good puncheurs who can challenge the best on his best days.

Sean Quinn, Hugo Page, Davide Cimolai and Edward Theuns are similar type of riders. Not the A list Sprinters but definitely one of those that passes climbs fairly ok and will rejoice themselves in reduced sprints.

Stephane Oldani, Diego Ulissi, Quinten Hermans And Sylvain Moniquet are breakaways experts. They also have some decent turn of speed that could prove useful on those punchy finishes.

Tobias Johannessen is an emerging rider from UNO-X. He will not be satisfied with just following the best on the steep gradients. He will be the one blowing things apart.

Koen Bouwman is a rider that has completely exploded by not only winning the KOM at the Giro but also 2 stages wins. He did also get into several breakaways and will be dominating here. Thymen Arensman is another one of the animator of the last week of the Giro. He can climb with the best and with his TT abilities he could aim for more here in Poland

Sergio Huguita and Richard Carapaz would have definitely prefered mountains but they nevertheless poccess enough power to handle group finishes.

The winner of this Tour de Pologne will have to show an mixture of powerful uphill finishes and some excellent uphill time trial abilities. Ethan Hayter has defined himself as not a sprinter.  He is however one of the fastest man, will get easily over those climbs and in a expert time-trialist. Close to him is Pello Bilbao , although not bad at time trial, he is some way behind the very best but he should not be discounted.

Very disappointed of missing the Tour through injury, Michal Kwiatkowski would relish the chance to win his home tour. The terrain fits him perfectly. the only uncertainty concerns his form and the freedom he will be given. The same could be said about American sensation, Magnus Sheffield.

Team Trek Segafredo have got themselves two gems for the future in Daan Hoole and Antonio Tiberi . Both are more than decent time trialist. Although their physique and style differs in that Daan Hoole is a huge guy with some insame power that can get over short climbs. Antonio Tiberi is a junior ITT champion that has been working and made a lot of progress in climbs. He usually packs that final km push that has won him podium finishes and even beat Eddie Dunbar in Hungary.

Predictions for Tour de Pologne 2022 overall win

★ Antonio Tiberi

The 21 year old will absolutely explode in this race. Howeever his inexperience might cost him the first place but a podium is totally feasible

★★ Thymen Arensman

We have not see him since the Giro ended. If he shows the same form as the start of the season. He will be in the top 5.

★★★ Sergio Higuita, Richard Carapaz

They both would have enjoyed a more difficult course, but they both have the team to make the race difficult and make their slight deficit in the TT negligeable.

★★★★ Michal Kwaitowski, Pello Bilbao

While the ex wrold champion form is a little of the unknown, anything close to his best will make him the man to beat.

Pello Bilbao will enjoy the short climbs and the long descent. The time trial is not totally to his disadvantage either as he is a ready that usually at his tempo.

★★★★★ Ethan Hayter

He can potentially win all 7 stages! That is enough said.

Tour de Pologne gives Vuelta a España contenders first major tryout - Preview

Geraint Thomas and Joao Almeida lead star-studded field

TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO, ITALY - MAY 26: (L-R) Primož Roglič of Slovenia and Team Jumbo-Visma, Geraint Thomas of The United Kingdom and Team INEOS Grenadiers - Pink Leader Jersey and João Almeida of Portugal and UAE Team Emirates - White Best Young Rider Jersey compete while fans cheer during the 106th Giro d'Italia 2023, Stage 19 a 183km stage from Longarone to Tre Cime di Lavaredo 2307m / #UCIWT / on May 26, 2023 in Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Italy. (Photo by Tim de Waele/Getty Images)

The dust from the Tour de France has barely settled before the build-up to the Vuelta a España has begun. And this year’s Tour de Pologne will, as ever, give some of the top contenders for Spain a chance to run through their stage racing scales prior to heading to Barcelona on August 26th, as well as being a coveted prize to win itself.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) were second and third overall, respectively, in the Giro d’Italia this May. They are set to be back on the Grand Tour start grid in Spain in a month’s time and are arguably the two most-established names seeking to test their form in the week-long race.

At the other end of the spectrum, Pologne is also well-known as a testing ground for up-and-coming stars, with last year’s winner Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers), 24, and runner-up Thymen Arensman , 23, both cases in point. Now racing alongside Hayter in Ineos Grenadiers, Arensman will be back in Pologne this year, and after winning last year’s hilly time trial, this year’s flatter test against the clock on stage 6 in Katowice will likely be another target for the Dutch star.

For home fans, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates), both former outright winners of their home race, will be the main local attractions. A climber like Majka may arguably find next Thursday’s time trial too difficult a challenge for an overall bid, but Kwiatkowski, assuming he has recovered well from the Tour de France, could be in the mix for a second GC victory.

Interest will be high too in how Giro d’Italia stage winner and talented US all-rounder Brandon McNulty fares on Poland’s captivating mixture of steep uphill finishes, flat bunch sprint stages and rolling hill country. That very variable terrain could also well suit versatile racers like recent Tour de France stage winner Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious), German all-rounder Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe), former Pologne stage winner and leader Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) and another former Pologne winner, Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates), finally back in race action after a long spell battling injury.

The sprinters’ field, too in this year’s Tour de Pologne, is a typically deep one. Ireland’s Sam Bennet t (Bora-Hansgrohe), already a winner this July in central Europe in the Sibiu Tour, will be looking to make his mark here, while Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious), who triumphed early on in the Giro d’Italia this May, is another possible challenger.

Former Belgian National Champion Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) had a phenomenally successful first half to the season and will be keen to get his second part of the year off to a bang here. Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) are no strangers to success on Polish roads  and German speedster Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) has often found Pologne to be favourable terrain, too. Another top name to watch is young Dutch gun Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma), who having taken his first WorldTour win here in 2022, would have no objection to claiming another this August.

Having missed out on July’s main event, Belgium’s breakaway star Thomas de Gendt (Lotto-Dstny) is partly using Pologne as another step towards his first Grand Tour of 2023 in Spain, while a hefty proportion of the Soudal-QuickStep lineup which raced the Giro and who could perhaps be supporting Remco Evenepoel in Spain in less than a month’s time will be present in Poland too.

Fast, furious GC battle

2023 Tour de Pologne route

The scarcity of high mountain ranges in much of  Poland means the GC battle in Pologne will  be fought out on its usual mix of ultra-flat terrain and a selection of hilly stages, as well as a short time trial. Bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds at finishes, and 3, 2 and 1 seconds for intermediate sprints, add spice to what is already a very tight battle.

Stage 1’s flat course in the historic city of Poznan, deep in western Poland, looks more than set for the sprinters, but stage 2’s summit finish on the Orlinek climb in  Karpacz should see a first clear GC contender emerge. Visited each year from 1999 to 2007 by Pologne, and graphically nicknamed ‘the Wailing Wall’ by local riders because of its difficulty, the Orlinek may not decide who wins Pologne, but it certainly will weed out those who are not in contention.

Stage 3’s much shorter, punchy uphill finish in Duszniki-Zdroj could be another flashpoint for the GC, and the well-known, demanding final circuit at Bielsko-Biala on stage 5, while ending in a reduced group sprint, can produce some interesting surprises. A few years back, a victory for Richard Carapaz ahead of riders usually with a faster turn of speed in grinding uphill finishes than the Ecuadorian was one such case in point.

However, the real showdown will likely come on stage 6’s gently rolling 16 kilometre TT in the industrial city of Katowice, prior to the usual bunch sprint finale on stage 7 in Poland’s former capital city, Krakow.

With many riders back in Pologne after a long summer break, it remains to be seen who could have their eye on targeting the TT, and within that, the overall. World Time Trial Champion Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma) is an obvious candidate, but riders like Almeida, Thomas but Arensman, Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) and   Matteo Sobrero (Jayco-AIUIa) may well count.

Pologne’s GC is the obvious immediate prize, but after a certain Dane’s TT crunch performance in the Tour de France and a big TT in the Vuelta a España in Valladolid, the chance for Spain-bound GC candidates to test their form against the clock in Pologne is too good to lose as well. And if it puts them in pole position to win central Europe’s biggest WorldTour event, then so much the better.

Tour de Pologne: second stage route preview

May 20, at 8.30 pm, the entire route of the 78th edition of the Tour de Pologne will be announced. Of the seven stages planned, the second promises to be rather selective and particularly testing.

The stage will start from Zamość and reach Przemyśl after 201 km, characterized by a predominantly undulating first part followed by the final 50 km featuring all the stage’s pitfalls. The riders will be engaged in a circuit that takes in three climbs – Wółka Hucińska (3rd cat.), Kalwaria Paklawska (2nd cat.) and Gruszowa (2nd cat.) – which will make the riders tackle an 1800m total elevation gain without respite.

Past the third ascent of the circuit, Gruszowa, the final 15-20 km lead into Przemyśl. A slight incline might facilitate some surprise attacks, but the race result will be settled in the last 1500m, where the field will roll on a wide downhill road on tarmac that progressively narrows and runs on setts, whereas the climb includes sections with 13 to 15% gradients.

– We expect it to be a really beautiful stage surrounded by enchanting landscapes throughout the 200km-long course. At the finish, a wonderful view of the mountains can be enjoyed. The technical difficulties of the territory allowed us to design a rather selective stage – explains Czeslaw Lang, General Manager of the Tour de Pologne. – I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the finale, a small group of athletes or some riders expert in explosive stage finishes would fight to claim the victory – he concludes.

Przemyśl is not really new to the Polish stage race. It hosted a stage finish in 1960 for the first time and welcomed the international cycling peloton again in 1967 and 1980.

The city, in the south-eastern part of Poland, just 15 km from the border with Ukraine, has hosted many ethnic groups, cultures and religions since the Renaissance, and has been an important strategic, economic and commercial center between Krakow and Lviv. The old town boasts many monuments, churches, an ancient town hall, a castle and a fortress, the third largest in Europe.

Lying at the foot of the Carpathians, Przemyśl enjoys an exclusive view and offers numerous cycling and hiking trails. Its proximity to the mountains has provided all the necessary ingredients for the Lang Team to organize an absolutely interesting stage that will be important to sketch out the overall classification.

Stage 4 — Tuesday, July 2 Pinerolo to Valloire Distance: 139.6km (87 miles) Profile: Mountain stage

Stage 4: The first major exam for the Tour general classification contenders

The shortest stage outside of the two individual time trials will be a testing one, with the route from Pinerolo in Italy to Valloire in the Alps crossing three major climbs, and ensuring hardly a kilometer of level ground during the 139.6 kilometers of racing.

The road rises as soon as the flag drops in Pinerolo, with the summit of Sestrières located 50.4km after the start. Fausto Coppi took a famous victory here in the 1952 Tour, having earlier triumphed in Pinerolo during the 1949 Giro. He also won both races overall.

The 39.9km climb, which also saw a defiant victory by Claudio Chiappucci ahead of Miguel Indurain in the 1992 Tour, is the first over 2,000 meters in this year’s race. It is followed 21km later by the summit of the Col de Montgenèvre, with this Tour’s second-highest peak in turn located 49km later.

The Col du Galibier is one of the most famous climbs in cycling. It first featured in the 1911 Tour de France and has featured no less than 31 times since 1947. In 2011 it was used for the first time as a stage finish, with Andy Schleck triumphing there after a 60km solo break.

At 23km in length and 2,642 meters above sea level, it is one of the most ferocious climbs in this year’s race. While 19km of descent remains after the summit, those first over the top have a huge chance of the stage win and, potentially, the yellow jersey.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “The race leaves Italy after a long climb to the resort of Sestrières, where Coppi triumphed in 1952, the border subsequently reached at the Col de Montgenèvre. Then, after ascending the Lautaret pass, the riders will tackle the 2,642-metre Galibier. This will be the first opportunity for the favorites to test themselves in the high mountains.”

2023 Tour de Pologne Stage 5 Preview

Pszczyna > Bielsko Biala 199km

tour de pologne preview

Ever since introducing this finish to the race in 2018, the organisers have continued to come back and use it time after time, apart from last year. We’ve had a mixed bag of winners over the years: Kwiatkowski, Mezgec, Carapaz and Arndt. It’s a very grippy finish, but this year the organisers have made the rest of the stage much harder, this is a big chance for some GC riders to make a difference before the time trial.

Weather

Another cloudy day with a chance of rain.

Key Points

This is the 2 nd  cat 1 climb of the day, it’s the steepest one and will help to put some fatigue in the legs.

Next up it’s this climb, which is done before the riders head to the finishing circuit. The length of the climb is the main difficulty, many riders will be dropped if someone wants to up the pace.

This is the circuit which the riders do three times to finish the race. The rise to the line is 2.3km at 4% into a headwind, it is very grippy and last time up many riders find themselves with no legs in the sprint, but the descent shouldn’t be underestimated. Riders can hit silly speeds; positioning is very important in the final lap.

Tactics

Mohorič is in the race lead, he sits 10 seconds ahead of the UAE duo, Majka and Almeida, but is that enough with a 16.6km ITT still to come? Almeida will fancy his chances of beating Mohorič by more than that, it means that the Slovenian could really do with gaining more time in this stage, but it won’t be easy. The worry for Bahrain is the presence of Majka, he gives UAE a great attacking option, Bahrain are likely to come under pressure in this stage. They’ve got a good team, but a lot of the covering work will have to be done by Caruso in the closing stages, and he can’t cover everything.

Given the race situation, this opens the door to someone sitting 5 th  – 20 th  on GC to attack and go for the stage win. Every time we’ve been here, the stage has ended in a sprint, Carapaz pulled a fast one in 2021 by attacking just before the sprint finish. With UAE and Bahrain locked in a fight for the stage and GC, there are a few riders who’ll look to benefit by attacking before the final lap and seeing if they can stay away and take the win.

If it does end in a sprint, it’s a very hard one. With 3168m of climbing in the legs, the rider who wins will have a lot of strength in the legs, and there could be a surprise, it’s not an easy finish to get right. Stages 2 and 3 will be used as good reference points, but this stage finishes on a 4% ramp, which is totally different to the other GC days.

Matej Mohorič  – it’s another stage that suits him very well, but being in the race lead brings an added complication for him, as he might need to cover a few moves himself in the final lap. The descending in the circuit is good for him, I wonder if he’ll throw caution to the wind and attack himself, looking to put UAE and Ineos under pressure. I doubt he will, he knows that he’s got a good chance of winning this stage from a sprint.

Michał Kwiatkowski  – he’s won here before, and Ineos always do well in this stage, they know how to win here. He’ll have been a little frustrated on Monday, he seemed to be blocked by Majka in the closing metres, he’d love to win this stage and gain some time before the TT. Kwiato has always had a fast sprint, he’ll hope his team can help get him in a great spot for the final kilometre.

UAE  – Majka to go long (he’s not too far from home), Almeida to wait for the sprint. Despite being the best mountain climber out of those already mentioned, I think this flatter finish is good for Almeida, he’s got a very fast finish and will be happy with the shallower gradient in the final two kilometres.

Ilan Van Wilder  – very consistent this week, but I think he needs to go early if he wants to take the win.

Eddie Dunbar  – exactly the type of rider who could try a Carapaz.

Marijn van den Bergh – he climbed very well on Monday, he was right up there near the end of the final climb, eventually finishing in 14 th . He’s a sprinter who seems to be getting better and better at climbing, but even still, winning this stage would take an enormous ride. Only one sprinter has won here before, and that was an easier stage, and a shorter run to the finish. If van den Bergh wins this stage, everyone better sit up and take notice.

Prediction Time

UAE have the options in this stage.

I’ll take a win for João Almeida , I think the finish suits him well.
