How your hands are positioned on the golf club has more of an influence on the angle of your clubface at impact than most other factors in the golf swing. We are connected with the golf club in only one place: the grip. 

The grip on your golf club will help improve traction and give you confidence. The right grip can even improve distance capability. We will show you which golf grips are the best for your game and why. 

Why Do Golf Grips Matter?

We are big into equipment and technology and how much of a difference these types of things can make in your golf game. Here’s what to expect from a golf grip: 

• The proper grip influences the alignment of the clubface at setup but, more importantly, at impact. 
• Having uniform grips that suit you can lead to consistency and repeatable golf swings. 
• A grip with better traction can increase swing speed and ball speed. 
• The grip’s texture changes the feedback you get on each shot which plays into your overall feel and touch on the course.
• Golf grips, especially the proper size, will reduce tension in the hands and have positive impacts on tempo and rhythm. 
• Proper grip size and feel can improve the overall ability to control golf shots.

Iomic Sticky 2.3

Instead, the Iomic Sticky 2.0 is a great feedback tool for players who like a firm feel. 

SuperStroke S-Tech

The SuperStroke S-Tech is a medium-soft rubber standard grip. SuperStroke keeps their pricing affordable but provides good tackiness and all-weather control. 

With the S-Tech, you can benefit from a cross-traction texture pattern. This is a great alternative for golfers looking for something similar to a Golf Pride Tour Velvet. 

• Medium-soft feel 
• Helps improve and even out grip pressure 
• High feedback golf grip 
• Not much cushion 

If you have larger hands or arthritis issues, the JumboMax is a great solution. The large JumboMax grips help reduce overall grip pressure and tension. If consistent hand pressure is a concern, JumboMax has solutions. 

As great as the JumboMax grips are, ensure your hand size is large enough to accommodate a larger grip. Golfers with small hands could end up struggling to release the club when the grip gets too large.

What to Look for In The Best Grips?

Golfers very rarely have the option to test one grip against another and see how each will feel in their hands. Even if you go for a club fitting, they may have a display that lets you get the feel of a proper grip but it’s still different when the grips are on your club. 

One of my favorite ways to ensure a grip is the best for you is to order just one, put it on and see how you play. If you like it, do the rest of the set. 

Weather Conditions and Climate

Decide if you are a fair-weather golfer or if you will putt out on 18 regardless of the conditions. Some grips do a better job with excess moisture and hold up well in poor weather conditions. 

If you want the strongest hold and highest traction in a grip, the corded grip is best. Even when it gets humid or rainy, the cord can still give you that little extra grab. The problem, of course, is that the cord is rougher on the hands.

For seasoned golfers with callouses, this may not be a problem but for new players, it’s a bit tough to handle. 

Soft Feel Versus Hard Feel 

A soft-feeling grip can help you with lighter grip pressure and added comfort. Many golfers feel they have more control around the greens, especially without a glove, when using a soft grip. 

Players who like a harder grip are those who need more of a firmer feel and a little more pressure in their hands.

Most of the larger golf grip manufacturers, like Golf Pride, Lamkin, Winn and SuperStroke, all make quality grips designed to last. However, some golf club grips will wear out faster than others simply because of the materials they are made of. 

The softer polymer-style grips have been known to deteriorate faster than rubber grips, especially for those with sweaty hands. If you play golf often, go with a durable rubber grip that can be replaced less often. 

Golf grip manufacturers know that having a grip that matches or complements the shaft and clubhead on your golf club is important. New grip options that come to market are available in many colors, making customization much easier. 

Be aware that lighter colored golf grips aren’t going to look pretty for very long. Even if you wear a glove, the grip will get dirty in the most frequently used areas. 

More and more knock-off brands of grips are coming to market. These are good for a cheap replacement but most will need to be replaced more often. The brands that we have had experience with and trust include: 

• SuperStroke

One of the most important features from a performance perspective is grip size. The standard grip put on the majority of stock golf clubs is appropriate for a golfer who wears a size large glove. 

If your hands are smaller or larger than average or you struggle with arthritis, you have a couple of options: 

• Customize grip size by adding layers of tape under the grip to build up the size 
• Purchase a custom grip size (i.e., midsize, undersize, jumbo) 

Go for a golf club fitting and talk to them about grip sizes for all of your clubs, including putter grips.

Rubber: Most common material. Comfortable and cushioned feel with plenty of tackiness. Should perform well in rough weather conditions. 

Cord: Rubber grips combined with synthetic fibers to help improve traction and decrease moisture. Old-school golfers with tough hands love the cord 

Synthetic: Synthetic grips are durable, resistant to UV exposure and made from materials like TPE, polyurethane or synthetic leather.

Hybrid: Not for your hybrid club but instead a mix of two different grip materials. Hybrid grips mix feel and performance and provide versatility. 

Elastomer: Cushiony feeling at impact. Elastomer helps absorb some energy and may decrease any pain you may have (physical pain—the mental pain is something we all have to deal with).

Polymer: Polymer is most well known in the grips from Winn. This is one of the most popular grip choices for golfers who want a soft yet tacky feel.

A standard golf grip is thicker in the butt end and gets more narrow as it travels down the shaft. The concept of reduced-taper golf grips has become quite popular. Reduced-taper grips are not nearly as thin at the bottom of the grip. 

With a reduced-taper design, the lead and trail hands will have equal amounts of pressure. For players who grip too tightly with their right hand, a reduced-taper grip can make all the difference.

Personal Preference 

Finally, you have to choose a grip you like. Even if you know that comfort and cushion are what you technically need, maybe you play your best golf with a cord style. Again, a club fitting is a great place to test different golf grips.

Golf Pride Z Grip is standard on so many new clubs and doesn’t even get a mention. And there’s no better grip for Drivers and fairway woods.

Good review summary. As an older guy who plays ~200 rounds each season, I’ve tried most everything on the market in every size available. In the end for me, go to is Crossline (black) midsize. Tour Velvet is a close second. CP2 is a great grip but the bottom of the end cap has a bit of a raised edge that I find annoying. I’m not a fan of the Winn grips for clubs (they don’t wear well) but I like their paddle grips for putters.

I’m baffled why no multicompound grips were mentioned. Golf Pride MCC or Lamkin ST+ Hybrid lines specifically.

Solid recap of the grips included in this write up, but missed a good chunk of high quality and versatile brands and really could have thrown in a few boutique brands that are popping up in the club maker / crafter scene – No.1 / PURE / RIPIT / Karma on the budget side

The grip is arguably the most important accessory in golf because it is the only part of you that is in contact with the club throughout the golf swing. 

Therefore it stands to reason that if you have bad grips which are poorly fitted or incredibly slippery, then your chances of hitting a good golf shot are significantly less. Additionally if your mind is too busy thinking about making sure your hands don't slip off the golf club, then you aren't focusing enough on the shot you have to play either.

Golf Pride MCC Grip

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Golf Pride's Multi Compound is one of the best golf grips , and most popular models in golf right now because of the combination of performance and aesthetics.

Performance comes from the split design which blends Brushed Cotton Technology in the top half of the grip, to help with better traction with the glove hand, with rubber in the lower half to add more feel and forgiveness.

Of course the grips come in lots of different colors and as you can see above several top players use a variety of designs. You can also get the grip with the cool MCC Teams designs as well.

Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grip

This all-rubber grip is the No.1 in the game and is arguably the most classic looking.

It combines a rubber-blend compound with a computer-generated non-slip surface that makes it as playable and comfortable as possible.

The plus-sign texture also helps pull moisture away from surface to allow for consistent traction.

In short it keeps things simple and classy.

Golf Pride Z-Grip Cord Grip

Two-time Major winner Collin Morikawa is one of very few players to opt for the Z-Grip model from Golf Pride.

One of the firmest grips from the brand, it has two layers of texturing for feedback and control, and the midsize has a deep ‘Z’ shaped pattern that winds around the grip while the heavy cord texture channels any moisture away.

Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord Grip

Used by Major winners Thomas and Koepka , the Tour Velvet Cord is also a top performer from Golf Pride.

It has all of the exceptional traction and all-weather performance that has made the Tour Velvet the winningest cord grip on Tour but now comes in a new white material comprised of tightly woven black cotton fibre.

JumboMax UltraLight XL Grip

Bryson DeChambeau does things his way and his grips are the same, as he opts for a huge model from JumboMax.

The JumboMax premise is that they have designed grips to fit your hands better to improve your ball striking by eliminating the tension. They use something called Finger-Palm technology so you don’t feel the need to squeeze, and Bryson was actually involved in the latest design. 

In 2019 the US Open champ got rid of 75g from his JumboMax grip and this proved to be a prototype of this, the UltraLite. The substantial taper profile is designed to keep the face square longer through impact and the larger profile means that you will grip it more evenly and feel more of the weight in the clubhead.

SwitchGrips ER Grip

A less well-known brand compared to others on this list is SwitchGrips, a company that is used by South Africans Oosthuizen and Ernie Els.

The 2010 Open champion uses the ER grip which is made from a proprietary rubber compound that has a non-slip texture on it for comfort and playability.

What is interesting is that SwitchGrips actually have weights in them in the butt of the club and these can range from 4g to 20g, dependent on a players feel and need. We are unsure which weight Oosthuizen has in, but because the butt of his club is black we can assume it is the standard design.

Golf Pride Tour Velvet ALIGN Grip

Featuring much of the performance of the Tour Velvet model above, the Align design features Align technology and is used by American Harris English.

This takes the form of a dedicated raised ridge which encourages more consistent hand placement and better clubface awareness so the days of shifting your hands around and wondering if you’re too weak or strong will be over.

It also has the most up-to-date rubber blend and non-slip surface pattern to get rid of any unwanted moisture. 

SuperStroke S-Tech Grip

SuperStroke may be best known for putting grips but three-time Major winner Jordan Spieth also uses club grips from the brand too, the S-Tech’s.

This grip is particularly good in all weather and there is minimal taper here, which helps with being able to have more even hand pressure on the grip and square the club more naturally.

It has a soft, tacky feel, hence its ability to deal with inclement weather, and it’s another that looks great; whether that is if you go for the blue, grey or red. It also comes in black naturally.

Golf Pride MCC Plus4 Grip

Tyrrell Hatton turned many heads when he showed up with purple grips in 2021. The exact model he uses is the MCC Plus4 grip and whilst the purple model is not on sale, there are still several colors for you to choose from.

The design is also worth mentioning here as it differs from most on this list.

The larger outside diameter of the grip simulates the feel of building up the grip with four extra wraps. This reduced taper encourages lighter grip pressure, promoting less tension in the hands and creating more fluidity and power throughout the swing

Golf Pride Tour Wrap Grip

American Daniel Berger opts for the Tour Wrap Grip from Golf Pride which is not commonly seen out on Tour. It features a wrap design that combines the look and feel of leather but has the durability and performance of soft rubber.

Not only that but the wrap design allows your fingers to nestle nicely between each section of the wrap.

Berger may use the black option but with the 2G model you can get it in white, blue and red as well.

Iomic X Grip

Japanese Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama uses Iomic X grips at the moment.

Available in several different colors they feature a more rounded profile to enable the grip to fit into the palms correctly, reducing grip pressure.

When it comes to fitting golf grips, grip size should be the first – and most important – factor to consider.

Playing the proper size grip can help reduce tension and grip pressure, and increase comfort and control. Above all, it’s about confidence – if you know you have a grip that just feels right in your hands, you’ll stand over every shot able to commit fully.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GOLF GRIP SIZE

Junior grips are ideal for younger players, and many female players prefer an undersized or standard size grip. Jumbo size grips are ideal for players with larger hands or for players who have arthritis.

Grips generally come in five standard grip sizes: Junior, Undersize, Standard, Midsize, and Jumbo. The majority of adult male golfers will fit into one of two sizes: standard or midsize.

Here’s a simple way to get a general idea of what size grip you should be playing:

• Glove Size : Men’s Small / Women’s Small or Medium

o    Recommended Grip Size : Undersize

• Glove Size : Men’s Medium or ML / Women’s Large

o    Recommended Grip Size : Standard

• Glove Size : Men’s Large

o    Recommended Grip Size : Midsize

• Glove Size : Men’s XL or 2XL

o    Recommended Grip Size : Midsize or Jumbo

You can also measure your hand size if you don’t know your glove size (or don’t wear a glove). Measure from the crease of your wrist (where your hand meets your forearm) to the tip of your middle finger.

There is some overlap between sizes, as many players fit in the range of either a standard or midsize grip – that’s why it’s crucial to feel grips or test different configurations if you’re able to find what works best.

• Crease to Fingertip : < 5″

o    Recommended Grip Size : Junior

• Crease to Fingertip : 5″ to 6.5″
• Crease to Fingertip:  6.6″ to 7.5″

o    Recommended Grip Size:  Standard

• Crease to Fingertip:  7.6″ to 9″

o    Recommended Grip Size:  Midsize

• Crease to Fingertip:  9.1″ to 10″

o    Recommended Grip Size:  Jumbo

WHAT IF I WANT AN “IN-BETWEEN” GRIP SIZE?

Some golfers find that a standard size grip is too small for their liking, but a midsize grip is too large. That’s where adding extra layers of tape can make a huge difference in getting that grip size perfected.

Building up golf grips with extra layers of tape underneath is extremely popular with Tour players who are particular about their equipment. In many cases, Tour players will add extra wraps of tape only underneath the lower half of the grip, where their trail hand goes, in order to create a reduced taper feel and reduce grip tension.

As a general rule adding 4 extra layers of tape (in addition to the 1 wrap of double-sided tape needed to adhere the grip to the shaft) will take a grip from an Undersize to Standard, Standard to Midsize, and so on. Be aware that building up grips with extra tape will stretch the rubber and make the grip feel firmer!

Golf Pride also offers certain models with  Plus 4 technology.

The Plus4 geometry delivers the feel of an additional 4 layers of tape built into the grip; primarily focused on the lower hand area of the grip.

SHOULD I BE PLAYING LARGER GRIPS?

If you’ve never re-gripped – and still play grips that originally came on your set of clubs – you likely are playing standard size grips.
