Pro cycling’s newest elite team unveiled - Team DSM

Heerlen, NL, 04 Dec 2020 12:30 CET

Royal DSM, a global science-based company in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living, today announced a strategic partnership with Team Sunweb that will see the professional cycling team transformed into Team DSM for the 2021 season onwards.

Introducing Team DSM

Fresh from winning multiple stages of the Tour de France and dominating the podium of the Giro d’Italia in 2020 , one of the top ranked and most exciting young teams in professional road cycling will be known as Team DSM from 1st January 2021.

Through this partnership DSM hopes to galvanize wider public action around the importance of the health of people and of the planet, in line with the company’s purpose-led, performance-driven strategy.

Building on an existing innovation partnership with DSM that has grown over the past half-decade, Team DSM will continue to ‘Keep Challenging’ by taking their nutrition, equipment and personal care to a whole new level. DSM will support the Men’s, Women’s and Development programs equally to become the best that they can be – inside and out.

In stepping up this partnership, DSM and Team DSM will also undertake several joint activities, including amongst others:

  • Develop and produce the team’s very own race apparel, in cooperation with technology partner Bioracer, to set new standards in protective race wear that utilizes peak performance materials.
  • Develop personalized, sustainable sports nutrition for each rider using the latest scientific knowledge, data insights and ingredients, in cooperation with sports nutrition partner Sanas.
  • Provide additional investment to increase the intensity of fully independent anti-doping testing in the team, executed by “Dopingautoriteit” (Dutch NADO), according to WADA standards.

The team’s new colors were revealed today for the first time at an online launch event hosted in DSM’s Virtual Innovation Center. Team DSM will proudly maintain the team’s distinctive two-stripe ‘Keep Challenging’ design but this time in DSM’s bright blue, emblazoned on an instantly recognizable standout new black kit.

Team DSM also level-up their two- and four-wheel rides with the introduction of Scott bikes and Volvo cars. Sunweb will remain the team’s partner.

Team Sunweb CEO (as from 1st January 2021, Team DSM CEO), Iwan Spekenbrink said: “ This is truly a dream. The involvement of DSM at this scale will definitely help us set new standards with the best nutrition and materials giving us a competitive edge inside and out. We share so much in common with DSM; a passion for innovation and sustainability, high ethical values and much more. The bike is a beautiful symbol of sustainable health and we are very keen to support DSM in ensuring more people recognize there are solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges. For a sports team like ours, having the chance to elevate our relevance from sporting excitement to contributing to big global themes is something we are very, very proud of and is definitely an ambition for all of us .”

DSM Co-CEO Geraldine Matchett said: “ This partnership goes beyond an exchange of products and expertise alone. There are considerable challenges ahead for the world in terms of people’s health as a result of poor nutrition and this will only be exacerbated by climate change. It is not too late for scientific solutions so, by becoming synonymous with such a young, successful, principled team, we hope to trigger wider action for more sustainable living and health through nutrition. This partnership will help further our mission to create brighter lives for all through our scientific and innovation power. I am really excited for the road that lays ahead for Team DSM. ”

DSM Co-CEO Dimitri de Vreeze said: “ For us it’s a very natural next step having already worked closely together for half a decade. We see our purpose-led, performance-driven approach matched in this team. Our culture is all about being courageous, caring and collaborative and this complements Team DSM’s advocacy on issues like doping, safety, the environmental impact of large racing events, and modernizing women’s and men’s pro cycling. These are areas where we can work together to be a positive force for change. This strategic partnership sets a new standard in sport and will help all the team’s programs, as well as society as a whole. ”

Setting a new standard in sports partnerships

The two organizations are in complete tandem in the creation of Team DSM, with a shared goal to keep challenging through innovation and cooperation. The new partnership will help to create products that deliver better health through nutrition outcomes, as well as safer and more sustainable materials, which will ultimately translate into benefits for society at large. Team DSM will gain from DSM’s advances in health, nutrition and cutting-edge materials, such as breathable water-resistant training jackets with Arnitel®, or proteins, vitamins and probiotics for optimal gut health and immunity. At the same time, DSM will gain direct insights and feedback from some of the most demanding customers in the world – pro athletes – in order to better develop sustainable solutions that can help others remain strong, healthy and performing safely for longer.

Safety first with new bespoke apparel

Safety is at the core of DSM’s entire business and a value already integrated into the team, after pioneering the use of protective material Dyneema® - the world’s strongest fiber - into cycling wear to reduce abrasion injuries. The new partnership continues this focus, integrating Dyneema® into more apparel and encouraging clothing manufacturers, other teams, and the sport’s governing body to raise the standard of protective clothing. Team DSM riders will enjoy their very own specially crafted performance clothing. Using the very best fabrics and largest technologies, this will define an absolute new standard of race wear, producing the best performance clothing out there. DSM will also make available their extensive expertise in health and safety for riders’ safety meetings and between pro cycling’s stakeholders to create safer race conditions.

Peak performance from optimal nutrition

DSM and Team DSM are developing Team DSM’s very own nutrition program for 2021. Using the most advanced expertise in nutritional, biological, analytical and data science gained from DSM’s 2,000 scientists in 30 laboratories around the world, Team DSM riders will benefit from the best ingredients and latest nutritional advances. This includes the development of personalized nutrition plans and will champion the use of protein sources that are more sustainable thanks to DSM’s innovations.

Supporting anti-doping for a clean competition

The team has always worked to the intensified ethical standards of the Movement for Credible Cycling (MPCC). DSM mirrors these values and will make even more resources available to protect clean athletes. DSM will invest further into the additional anti-doping program that has been in place for the team since 2018, intensifying and increasing testing for all the Men’s, Women’s and Development programs. As a result, the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) of the Netherlands, the Doping Authority Netherlands or “Dopingautoriteit”, will increase the frequency of its WADA-standard testing of the team’s athletes. This serves as a deterrent as well as increasing the chances of detecting anyone using prohibited substances. The anti-doping procedures remain the same, with this investment intensifying the frequency of testing far beyond what is required by cycling authorities. The results will also be added to the riders’ biological passport.

Team Sunweb CEO (as from 1st January 2021, Team DSM CEO), Iwan Spekenbrink added: “ We are really excited about 2021. We will be racing Scott’s super-fast road bikes, equipped with Shimano and other top of the range components and accessories, so we will have the best support inside and out. Our team’s specialists will work very closely with the teams of DSM, Scott and all our partners to help us be the best that we can be. In addition to this we also have Volvo on board for the new season. This is such a long-cherished dream and only motivates us more for the new year. ”

Formerly Skil-Shimano, the once German now Dutch team made the jump to the WorldTour in 2013 as Argos-Shimano.

They then became Giant-Alpecin before settling on their well-known guise of Team Sunweb from 2017 to 2020. They’ve since had two rebrands, however, and are now known as Team dsm-firmenich, dropping the Sunweb travel brand in favour of a Dutch multinational corporation.

In 2022, Romain Bardet and Andreas Leknessund netted the team overall titles at the Tour of the Alps and the Arctic Race of Norway, while Alberto Dainese and Thymen Arensman picked up stage wins at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.

Bardet remains the team’s best hope for Grand Tour success, but it does seem as though they’ve got one eye on the future too following the recent promotion of promising Britons Oscar Onley and Max Poole from their development squad.

These youngsters will no doubt help the team to fill part of the void left by several departing talents, like Arensman, Søren Kragh Andersen, Nikias Arndt and Cees Bol. But to ensure that the hole in their roster is properly plugged, the team have also added WorldTour experience in the form of Patrick Bevin, Harm Vanhoucke and Alex Edmondson.

Tour of Turkey: Tobias Lund Andresen wins stage 4 sprint, moves into race lead

Tobias Lund Andresen ((Dsm-firmenich PostNL) emerged from a hectic finish to win stage 4 of the Tour of Turkey in Bodrum.

The Dane needed a late bike change but returned to the peloton and then timed his effort perfectly on the rising finish after Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) and the remains of the early break were caught in the final kilometre.

Danny Van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished second and Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Deceuninck) third as other riders slowed each other in the search for the best wheel to follow.

Thanks to his stage victory and the time bonuses, Lund Andresen also took the race leader’s blue jersey, which he will wear during the 177.9km fifth stage from Bodrum to Kuşadası.

Lund Andresen was overjoyed to win his first professional race.

“The plan was that if Fabio made it over the climb, we’d go with him but he didn’t have the leg, so we made a nice plan for me and the team did an amazing job and I was able to take the win,” he said.

“It was a hard stage, with a lot of climbing. The roads are not the best, so it’s almost like riding cobblestones the whole day. It was grippy but that was quite nice for me.”

A breakaway again tried to foil the sprinters’ teams and the peloton, with eight riders going away with 110 km to race of the 137.9 km stage.

They worked well together and extended their lead to close to 2:00 but then Polti-Kometa and Astana Qazaqstan drove the chase. The Italian team was keen to defend Giovanni Lonardi’s race lead, while Astana Qazaqstan rode for stage 2 winner Max Kanter.

The hilly profile of the stage again ruled out the pure sprinters, with Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Fabio Jakobsen (Dsm-firmenich PostNL) and others dropped from the peloton.

The break reduced to five riders over the final climb after 95 km but James Whelan (Q36.5), Calum Johnston (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA),  Tarozzi, Owen Geleijn (TDT - Unibet) and Gianni Marchand (Tarteletto-Isorex) pushed on and held a lead of 40 seconds on the fast ride to Bodrum.

Whelan split the attack on a late climb with 10km to go, with only Tarozzi, Johnston and Marchand able to go with him. They attacked each other and the pace eased so the peloton closed the gap on the run-in to the finish.

Tarozzi refused to give up hope and attacked alone inside the final kilometre. He got a gap but then faded on the rising finish as Lund Andresen timed his effort to perfection.

UP CLOSE WITH TEAM DSM’S SCOTT FOIL

tour team dsm

It’s a new year and with it come new bikes, teams and races – all good.  Just as the calendar turned to 2023 the German based Team DSM announced a new partnership with Scott Bikes. Here’s a close-up look of what the team’s Foil RC aero road bike looks like that’s driven by Shimano Dura Ace components and wheels mounted with Vittoria tires.

TEAM DSM SCOTT FOIL

Press Release

SCOTT renews partnership with Team DSM for a further two years. SCOTT will continue to support the WorldTour team as official supplier of premium bikes and high-performance helmets. Syncros, part of the SCOTT Sports group, will grow their partnership as bike components sponsor to be official saddle supplier for Team DSM.

SCOTT has been working with Team DSM since 2021 and in this time, has celebrated significant results with the team. Team DSM were integral to the development of the all-new Foil RC, which the riders first raced in 2022. The team has since gone on to huge successes, including Grand Tour stage wins, and wearing the first yellow jersey at the inaugural Tour de France Femmes.

“Team DSM continue to show great success as a World Tour team and are an outstanding partner for SCOTT. The team, with its distinguishing Keep Challenging philosophy, fits seamlessly with our passion for innovation, technology, and design. The Team is driven by the same high performance goals as we are at SCOTT,” comments Pascal Ducrot, Vice President, SCOTT Sports.

“We share a passion to make a difference in professional road cycling. SCOTT has an outstanding track record in developing high performance racing bikes. With their recent introduction of the all-new Foil RC, SCOTT has once again lived up to this reputation. We are thrilled we can continue working with SCOTT and their industry leading engineering team in the coming years,” adds Iwan Spekenbrink, CEO, Team DSM.

Since 2021, Syncros have supplied bike components, including cockpits and seatposts, to Team DSM, and the partnership now grows to include saddles. The partnership signifies Syncros’ commitment to working with riders at WorldTour level, with Team DSM giving the ideal platform to showcase the performance of Syncros products to the world of cycling.

“We are delighted that the partnership continues to grow as we today announce our extended sponsorship with Syncros also. I look forward to the future, as the team goes from strength to strength, and to the continued impact we can bring together to the World Tour and to the greater cycling industry as a whole,” comments Pascal Ducrot, Vice President, SCOTT Sports.

As the components will be relied on by riders throughout the race season, the technology and biomechanic expertise of Syncros was carefully selected by Team DSM’s performance experts. Together with German bikefit experts Gebiomized, Syncros engineers used extensive analysis to offer a range of saddles that optimize body fit dependent on a rider’s flexibility and preference, to ensure the highest level of performance for the team.

Narelle Neumann, Head of Science, Team DSM adds, “Syncros has always been a front runner of introducing new technology and they have impressed us a lot with their aerodynamic cockpits and high-quality seat posts during recent seasons. We are confident the Syncros components and products will give us a competitive edge for the coming seasons, and we are absolutely looking forward to start racing with their range of performance saddles.”

For the coming race season, Team DSM’s Men’s, Women’s and Development programs will race and train with the Foil RC and Plasma models. Furthermore, the Team will use the SCOTT Cadence, Centric and Split helmets and Syncros Tofino, Savona, and Belcarra saddles.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey returns to the calendar again keen to show off the natural wonders of the country to the world and to provide an excellent spectacle for bike racing fans.

This year, just four World Tour teams have turned up in the shape of BORA - hansgrohe, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Alpecin - Deceuninck so this will open up opportunities for some of the smaller teams to score a big victory in this prestigious race.

With a host of sprint stages along the route it’s no surprise to see some of the world’s best sprinters present including Sam Welsford (BORA - hansgrohe), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and back after illness the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

Travelling east to west the first seven stages hug the beautiful coast line hopping from town to town, resort to resort before a long transfer to stage eight in the magical city of Istanbul.

The day's early break almost held on to the line but were agonisingly caught within the final kilometre. A couple more riders then launched very late attacks but in the end it came down to a mass sprint with the win being taken by Tobias Lund Andresen (Dsm-firmenich PostNL).

The young Dane also moves into the race lead as it heads north towards Kusadasi and even through there are a few hills it looks like being another sprint finish.

Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey 2024 stages

The eight stage tour starts with a predominantly flat 135km around the city of Antalya to provide opportunity number one for the big sprinters before starting its journey westwards along the coast line.

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.

Team DSM to continue focus on young riders despite talent drain

Six riders promoted to men's 2023 WorldTour team from development squad

Team DSM

Few WorldTour teams devote the level of resources to rider development than Team DSM and few have to watch as so many of these riders leave for big-budget teams when they find success. Yet the Dutch team is staying the course in 2023 despite slipping down the UCI team rankings. Team DSM scored enough points to secure a place in the WorldTour but finished 20th in the UCI rankings in 2022 and 21st the year before.

Sports director and former rider Roy Curvers admits the team is in a rebuilding phase after losing young talents like 2020 Giro d'Italia runner-up Jai Hindley and Lennard Kämna to Bora-Hansgrohe, Marc Hirschi to UAE Team Emirates, and now Vuelta a España stage winner Thymen Arensman to Ineos Grenadiers.

"Yes, we lost already a lot of names that we developed in the past," Curvers tells Cyclingnews . "But we lost also a lot of names that started with us as no-names, and then developed, and became really good riders with us, scoring really good points."

Team DSM plans to stay the course and continue giving young riders opportunities to develop as well as relying on experienced Grand Tour racers like Romain Bardet and Classics men who have Paris-Roubaix winner John Degenkolb as a mentor.

Curvers knows the team may not be able to match the salaries of Ineos or Jumbo-Visma.

Oscar Onley goes pro early with five-year contract at Team DSM Bevin, Harm Vanhoucke sign for Team DSM Dainese defends Italian pride with Giro d'Italia sprint win

"When you look back 10 years ago, you had Team Sky which had a bigger budget than most of the other WorldTour teams. And all the 10-15 teams behind Sky were more or less the same. There was not a €5 million difference between the second and the 15th or 18th teams in the WorldTour. Now the budget difference between these teams and all the rest is big.

"We cannot change from today to tomorrow how much money we can offer everybody. When the starting point of keeping a rider is only on salary, then it's likely that we lose him to a team from the top four or five of the WorldTour. What we should aim to do is to create an environment where a rider knows they are in an environment where they can get the best out of themselves. We try to motivate more on the sporting side and give opportunities that we can offer to riders that those big teams cannot give."

The talent drain was evident when the UCI promotion/relegation scheme went into effect for 2023 and only the top 18 teams of 2020-2022 remained. Team DSM were 16th in the triennial rankings but barely 1,000 points ahead of Lotto-Soudal, who were relegated.

Curvers says the last two seasons came after four very successful years. The team believes the current crop of young riders will bring in results over the next three-year WorldTour cycle.

However the UCI, when confirming the three-year WorldTour licences, said that Team DSM's licence for the second and third years are conditional on the provision "of additional documents related to the financial criterion," indicating the team's funding needs still to be confirmed.

"We are confident that when we keep building and expanding this young core, we won't be in the same boat in three years," Curvers said.

There were more flashes of big potential from Italian Alberto Dainese, who won a stage of the Giro d'Italia , from Sam Welsford with a podium in the Scheldeprijs, and Andreas Leknessund who won the Arctic Race of Norway.

The team have promoted six riders from the development team, giving Oscar Onley a five-year contract , and Tobias Lund Andresen and Lorenzo Milesi three-year deals. Pavel Bittner and Casper van Uden joined as trainees this year, and Max Poole will join on a two-year contract in 2023.

They've also kept 22-year-old American Kevin Vermaerke and Australian climber Chris Hamilton and picked up compatriot Matthew Dinham - all staying through 2025.

Onley, 20, had a brilliant performance in the CRO Race, going toe-to-toe with Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard and finishing in third overall. Van Uden won the points classification of the Tour de l'Avenir and was fourth in the Scheldeprijs.

The next step is developing consistency, Curvers says.

"These guys are still really young, they showed flashes of really big potential. But they are not at an age yet where you can ask help from them on a weekly basis. We just keep on building with the aim to become more consistent. So that also gives our team a bigger backbone with these guys growing into more maturity."

There won't be a huge rush for the young riders to get results, however.

"We have to take steps with a young group of guys. You cannot rush to put them on the highest podium or in the races that give the highest points. But I think when these guys develop three years more, they will score more points every year. And in that way, we will not be so afraid that in three years we are again facing relegation.

"If everything goes according to plan, then we should score from this year on more points every year. And when we do that, we're not in trouble."

WEIMAR GERMANY AUGUST 24 Samuel Welsford of Australia and Team DSM sprints during the 37th Deutschland Tour 2022 Prologue a 26km individual time trial from Weimar to Weimar DeineTour on August 24 2022 in Weimar Germany Photo by Stuart FranklinGetty Images

Welsford, Van Uden and Dainese will be the team's sprinters after the departure of Cees Bol, and the team aims to rejuvenate the lead-out train to have sprinters "competing with world's best just like we did in the past in the years when we were Argos or Giant-Alpecin".

When asked if there was some quality in recruits that could signal the potential for greatness of the scale of a Remco Evenepoel aside from power, Curvers said riders need to have a strong drive to learn and improve.

"If I have to point at one thing that almost all big guys in the sport have it's that thing. A) being really talented and B) being almost unhealthily eager in the search for improvement."

Other qualities include resilience because cycling is rife with setbacks like illness and injury.

"That's also the defining thing. Like Evenepoel - everybody said from the moment he started his cycling career that everything he touched turned into gold. But last year he barely raced because of that injury. That was a major setback. I think he even came back from that injury as a better athlete. Everybody knew he was one of the most gifted riders in the bunch, but still, almost everybody also questioned whether he was going to really be a guy who was going to compete for a GC in a Grand Tour. And basically the first time he aims for it, he already got it."

Whether Team DSM have another Jai Hindley-style giant leap to Grand Tour contention remains to be seen.

"I think we can conclude that we have a lot of guys on that side who are improving, but a guy like Jai - that was all of a sudden really quick," Curvers said. "That's something that is always nice, but those are also hard to predict. So I think you just have to make sure that you have a lot of guys improving.

"If we make one step ahead in the development of the majority of our riders, I think we have a successful season, and then more results and more victories will be the outcome of that of that step that everybody individually and we as a team make."

Power Rankings: Watch Out for Siblings (and Ireland) and Zurich Classic's Team Event

The Zurich Classic has returned to New Orleans for the annual two-man team event. Here are the duos our model likes this week.

  • Author: Jim Stracka

Welcome to Power Rankings, a weekly feature on SI Golf from our partners at KeyCompete . This week the PGA Tour drops into New Orleans for the Zurich Classic . Here’s how our model sees this week shaping up:

2024 Zurich Classic Preview

Nestled in Avondale, just outside New Orleans, TPC Louisiana was designed by Pete Dye in 2004. Known for vibrant wildlife, sprawling wetlands and majestic cypress trees, the course is a par-72 charmer that stretches over 7,425 yards.

The course cleverly utilizes the natural landscape, incorporating more than 100 bunkers and undulating Bermuda greens. This event is once again a break from traditional stroke play, where two-man teams will play alternating-rounds of four-ball (rounds 1 and 3) and alternate shot (rounds 2 and 4). Here are the teams our model likes this week:

KeyCompete 2024 Zurich Classic Power Rankings

1) Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry (+700) - A formidable Irish team, McIlroy's long drives and Lowry's exceptional short game make them our favorites. They seem especially equipped for four-ball, and their ability to perform under pressure, coupled with their strong friendship, make them the pair to beat.

2) Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay (+450) -  They’re frequent partners in team competitions, and Schauffele’s precision paired with Cantlay’s consistency make them a threat here as well.

3) Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris (+1000) - Theegala’s impressive adaptability and Zalatoris’s powerful tee shots make this young team a good bet on paper. Interested to see how the click in foursomes.

4) Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama (+1600) - Morikawa’s elite iron play and Kitayama’s rise make this team intriguing. Their combined skills could mesh well, especially in alternate shot.

5) Nicolai Hojgaard and Rasmus Hojgaard (+2200) - The Danish twins have similar playing styles and an innate understanding of each other's games that provides a unique advantage.

6) Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin- (+4000) - A Canadian pair flying under the rade from some of the flashier duos, their consistent play and mutual compatibility make them as strong bet. Solo runner-up here last year.

7) Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith (+2800) - Another Canadian duo and former college teammates at Kent State, Conners and Pendrith combine stellar driving accuracy and length.

8) Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Fitzpatrick (+2500) -  The brothers from England not only share a surname but also a deep understanding of each other’s games. Matt, a U.S. Open champion, and Alex, a rising star, could leverage their rapport.

9) Keith Mitchell and Joel Dahmen (+4000) - The runaway favorites to have a good time on Bourbon Street. But they also have a solid history here, albeit with different partners.

10) Billy Horschel and Tyson Alexander (+5000) - Horschel and Alexander bring experience and grit. Horschel’s track record in team events paired with Alexander’s solid all-around game could surprise. Horschel is also fresh off a win in last week’s alternate-field event.

 About Last Week

Not enough can be said about Scottie Scheffler’s current dominance, as he prevailed on a rain-delayed Monday for his fourth title in five starts, and another $3.6 million payday. Sahith Theegala moved up for a solo runner-up that should give him some nice momentum this week.

KeyCompete moved its season record to 69-50 on match-up bets.

From a two-tournament week to a two-man tournament. That’s the transition to this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Numerous golfers from both the Corales Puntacana Championship and the RBC Heritage have reunited to form 80 partnerships at TPC Louisiana south of New Orleans. An explanation of the format, a review of the course, what’s at stake, an early look at the weather and more details are below.

OTHER TEAMS CONSIDERED

  • Doug Ghim and Chan Kim
  • Luke List and Henrik Norlander
  • Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak
  • Thomas Detry and Robert MacIntyre
  • Parker Coody and Pierceson Coody

Since the first edition of the Zurich Classic as a team competition in 2017, a common curiosity has been how the two-man collaborations are formed. While PGA TOUR membership status plays a role in the field construct to a certain extent, not all teams are as simply understood as the three pairs of brothers who have joined forces this week – Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard and TOUR rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody. The last two pairs are twins, too.

Fan interest in the relationships always varies wildly, and that’s always part of the fun, but one of the more fascinating storylines is the connection between 2022-23 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Eric Cole and one-time PGA TOUR winner Russ Cochran. The 65-year-old lefty is making his 600th career PGA TOUR start and first in 11 years. Cochran’s son, Reed, is Cole’s caddie, so it’ll be a family affair for the milestone.

Official World Golf Ranking points are not distributed for this tournament but the start does not contribute to divisors, so it’s a free play. Meanwhile, each member of the winning team will receive 400 FedExCup points (i.e., the average between 500 and 300 reserved for first and second place, respectively). He’s also credited with an official PGA TOUR victory that will yield exemptions into next month’s PGA Championship and the 2025 editions of The Sentry and THE PLAYERS Championship. Each also will be exempt as a TOUR member in the winners category through 2026.

To prevail, the winning team will navigate the first and third rounds of better ball and the second and final rounds of alternate shot. The 36-hole cut will be low 33 teams and ties.

TPC Louisiana is unchanged as it concerns distance and turf conditions. It’s a stock par 72 that tips at 7,425 yards. Overseeded Bermudagrass greens can reach 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter, while the only layer of rough is not overseeded and trimmed to 2 inches.

Favorable weather throughout is expected, thus TPC Louisiana should present its best self. Perfect conditions on Thursday should give at least one team a reasonable look at the tournament record of 59 with which Cantlay and Schauffele opened their wire-to-wire victory in 2022. Winds will freshen on Friday and remain moderate in their push from the south for the remainder. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 80s.

The traditional top-10 exemptions into next week’s THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson are reserved for golfers among the top five teams and ties at the Zurich Classic.

NOTE: ShotLink is not utilized for this tournament.
