Is it possible to install Safari in Linux using the Mac installer?

Sadly, no. While it is possible to install DMG files in Linux, the native Safari browser for macOS is purpose built to only run for that operating system, as the browser uses Mac-specific functions which allow it to integrate well into macOS. For example, the Quick Note feature in Safari relies on external Apple programs to work properly.

I already have WINE installed. Is it alright to install PlayOnLinux on top of it?

Yes! By default, PlayOnLinux creates its own set of virtual drives where it places the custom WINE version that it uses. Because of that, it is safe to install PlayOnLinux alongside with a mainline version of WINE. For example, when you install Safari through PlayOnLinux, it creates a clean sandbox where it installs all the programs and WINE patches that it needs.

Further, this approach also means that removing a program that you previously installed through PlayOnLinux is incredibly simple: press “Right click” on the “Safari 5” entry in the main menu and select “Remove.”

Is it possible to remove the Safari theme and return Firefox to the default?

Yes! It is relatively simple to remove the Safari theme and revert your Firefox installation back to its default settings. First, go back to the White Sur directory that you extracted. From there, you then need to type the following command: ./tweaks.sh -f -r && ./install.sh -u .

Doing that will allow you to remove all the Safari-related files for Firefox as well as delete all theme files from your machine. With that done, the last thing that you need to do is to restart the browser to reload your default settings.

Installing Apple’s Safari Web Browser in Ubuntu Linux

While Apple may be pushing Safari on Windows , the company has historically ignored Linux users. Fortunately, thanks to WINE , which allows you to run Windows applications without installing Windows, it's not too difficult to get Safari running in Linux.

The Ubuntu Unleashed blog recently posted instructions on how to install Safari using WINE on Ubuntu , but with a few tweaks, you should be able to get it running on just about any Linux distribution. The instructions even include installing the Flash plugin for Safari in WINE.

Of course if you aren't looking for the Apple-specific front-end, WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is also used in Konqueror. ( Update: As Douglas Greenshields points out in the comments below, WebKit is actually based on KHTML (Konqueror's web browser), and it is not technically part of Konqueror .)

However, if it's the Safari interface you're after, WINE is your answer. The only real dependency, aside from WINE, is that you install Microsoft's Core Fonts, but you'll need them for just about any application running under WINE.

I tested the install out of curiosity and it worked without a hitch. As you can see in the screenshot above, I've got the Windows version of Safari running in Ubuntu and the Flash plugin works just fine. The main menu items are a little bit off, but it's still usable and surprisingly snappy.

How to use Apple Safari on Linux

Today, in this article, we show you how to use Apple Safari on Linux . One of the most used and secure browsers, Safari is made to let you browse the internet with the highest level of privacy protection. For Linux, this browser has not yet been formally released. While Safari has not yet been made available for the Linux OS, we feel that both the Linux OS and macOS have a long history with UNIX. The good news is that there is a guide which can help you use Safari on your Linux computer if you are a Linux user or web developer who wants Safari browser support.

Macintosh and Windows operating systems, as well as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad all support Apple Safari as their default browser. Based on the idea that the best browser is one that “gets out of your way and lets you just enjoy the web”, Safari was created. The WebKit engine, which is at the heart of Apple’s Safari browser, handles tasks such as displaying visuals, rendering fonts, running Javascript, and choosing the page layout.

Future iterations of Safari are anticipated to use Apple’s WebKit2 engine. This engine has a split process architecture that is integrated directly into the framework, allowing web browser processes to run as separate processes in the operating system for greater stability and security. There are basically two distinct methods to install Safari on Linux. Use PlayOnLinux, which provides a graphical user interface (UI) for WINE, or WINE (the compatibility layer, not the drink). Below are the steps to run Apple Safari on Linux.

Steps to Run Apple Safari on Linux

To start using Apple Safari on Linux, launch a terminal window. When hitting the keys Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard, you can launch a terminal window on the Linux desktop. Alternatively, look under “Terminal” in the application menu. To use Apple Safari on your Linux computer, follow the step-by-step instructions below with the terminal window open and ready to use.

Step 1: First, use the wget download command to download Windows Safari 5 installer EXE to your Linux PC. This installer EXE makes it possible to install Safari under Wine on Linux.

wget http://appldnld.apple.com/Safari5/041-5487.20120509.INU8B/SafariSetup.exe

Step 2: After downloading the software to your computer, use the wine command to start up the installation wizard.

wine SafariSetup.exe

Step 3: As Safari.exe Setup Wizard open, you will see “ Welcome to the Safari installer ”. Read the summary that the wizard shows. When you finish reading it, find the “ Next ” button and click on it with the mouse.

Step 4: By selecting the “ Next ” button, you will see the Apple Safari License Agreement. Select the “ I accept the terms of the license agreement ” and select the option “ Next ” button to continue to the next page in the installer.

Step 5: following the license agreement, you will see several checked boxes. If you want Safari to be the default browser on Linux , leave the boxes checked. Otherwise, uncheck everything.

Step 6: On the next page, you will need to tell the Safari Assistant where to install the software. Leave it as the default or, if you are an expert, look for a place to install it. Then finish the installation.

Final Words

We hope you like our article about how to run Apple Safari on Linux. Software and applications developed by Apple are known to work well with Apple hardware. Safari is the same way. The appropriate operating systems and hardware requirements were taken into account when the company created this web browser. Automatically works fine on Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.

How do I install Opera and Safari on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit? Can anyone help? Opera I downloaded but could not get it installed. On the other hand I did not try Safari, even I don't have any idea if Safari has a version for Ubuntu.

Safari doesn't have Linux version. But you can run it using Wine. First install Wine.

Then create, download and build directory.

Download Safari ( version for windows)

Open using wine.

Safari for Linux

No Safari for Linux? Well I must state that I am disappointed in Apple for leaving the Linux community in the dark. 😐

Any reason why Apple has just left the Linux community in the dark?

Too small of a market to be worth the effort of the rewrite needed.

mende1

And Apple has discontinued the Windows version. If you want to run Safari in Linux, the only way to try that is to install Wine from the repositories (depending on the Linux distribution you are using) and then, download Safari for Windows from the Apple Support site. Finally, run the installer using Wine to install it.

Wine virtualizes Windows applications to run them in Linux, and it may or may not work in Safari

Feb 25, 2013 5:03 AM in response to mende1

mende1, although the Windows version of Safari has been discontinued, it has not been pulled from existence so Windows' version of Safari is still possible to be used. I am, at present, using PlayOnLinux WINE software to run both Safari and iTunes on Ubuntu Linux, but this is not the point. How does anyone at Apple know what the result of Apple software on Linux will be like? Nobody can anticipate the result of Safari; I am sorry, but Apple are discriminative.

Allan, again, like I said above, nobody can anticipate the result of Safari for Linux. I mean, Mac OS and Linux are both Unix-like, so both are more related than Mac OS and Windows could ever be.

This is something I've never understood. What's running under the hood of a Mac. UNIX. What's Linux based off of. UNIX. Porting Mac software over to Linux should be super easy if Apple would just recompile the entire library set into a Linux distro.

May 2, 2013 12:52 PM in response to Jonathan Andrew Upton

Well, I am not the one you need to convince on this. It is Apple and they seem to have absolutely no interest in the idea at the present time.

Actually, by the sounds of it, we need to convince more Mac, and Windows users to switch to Linux 😉

Good luck on that front.

I don't think it's highly unusual for "the big two" to ignore Linux. Fortunately for Linux users, there's Firefox and Chrome.
