25 ZAMBOANGA CITY Tourist Spots & Things to Do
Whenever we’re asked what our favorite local destinations are, we always include Zamboanga City in the list. And almost always, we get a one-word follow-up question delivered with a lot of curiosity — “Why?”
In my circle of friends, I can count with my fingers those who have set foot in this corner of Mindanao. But what’s in Zamboanga? Why should you visit? As one of the biggest urban hubs in the Philippines in terms of land area (and population), Zamboanga City is brimming with attractions that are worth going the distance.
Zamboanga City’s travel scene has been developing fast over the past few years. It is, after all, Region IX’s primary gateway. Tours are becoming more organized. Promotion of the city has been relentless, especially after travel restrictions have eased. Most tourists flock to the islands and the beaches, but the local food scene is steadily drawing in more visitors, too.
The team has been to Asia’s Latin City five times already, but each time we felt like there was still more to see and discover! On our most recent trip, AirAsia , which now flies daily to Zamboanga, toured us around the city and we got to visit some attractions for the first time!
If you’re curious about what awaits you there, here’s a full rundown of the things to do and places to visit in Zamboanga City.
WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?
SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS
Pink beach (sta. cruz grande island).
Off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula lies an island that, when kissed by the sun, glows with a natural rosy blush. Hailed by the National Geographic as one of the World’s 21 Best Beaches in 2017, Pink Beach is Zamboanga City’s most popular tourist attraction.
To manage your expectations, the pink hue isn’t vivid or bright. From afar, the sandy shore looks like the usual white beach, but the closer you get, the pink taint becomes more apparent. The sand’s pale pink tint is the result of the weathering of the red organ-pipe corals (tubipora musica) that were brought to the shore by the waves.
Punctuating the southeastern side of the peninsula, Zamboanga City’s Paseo del Mar is the main jump-off point to the island and its Pink Beach. Visitors can hire a tricycle from the city center to Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal in Paseo del Mar. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes.
Because the number of visitors is strictly regulated, you need to register in advance before going. Registration and boat service start at 7:00 AM. Overnight stay is not permitted and only day tours are allowed.
Boat fee is P1000, good for up to 10 passengers. If your group is smaller, you’ll still need to pay the same amount.
Jump-off Point: Paseo del Mar (Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal) Day Tour Schedule: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Tuesday-Thursday, Saturday – Sunday); CLOSED (Mondays & Fridays). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Entrance Fee: P20 + P5 (Terminal Fee) Boat Fee: P1000 (good for up to 10 pax) Cottage Rental Fee: P100 – P500 (depending on the size)
Mangroves Boat Tour (Sta. Cruz Grande Island)
While Grande Santa Cruz Island allures with its pink radiance, its beauty goes beyond appearances. It also keeps a trove of natural wonders. On the other side of the island is a lagoon fully adorned with mangroves, nourishing wildlife and promoting biodiversity.
The lagoon actually dominates the whole island, occupying most of the surface. The best way to explore it is to take a guided boat tour. As your boatman paddles, a guide will lead you to a number of spots to explain just how important it is to protect this site. You’ll learn about the types of mangroves and meet upside-down jellyfish . Don’t worry, they’re not dangerous at all. They’re virtually stingless. But please don’t get them out of the water.
To join a lagoon boat tour, tell the boatmen that brought you to Pink Beach that you want to explore the lagoon. They will take you to a small community near the entrance to the lagoon. This transfer will cost you an additional P200.
Here, you’ll be transferring to a smaller “yellow boat.” Rental of each yellow boat costs P300, good for 2 passengers. Any given boat will be accompanied by 2 paddlers, each from a different family. (It’s a way of making sure everyone in the community benefits from the program.)
Tour guide fee is P300. A tour guide can lead up to 5 boats max. You can team up with other boats so you could split the guide fee.
Important: you can only arrange a tour before 12 noon! They won’t be accepting any booking beyond that time. Please follow the rules and regulations when exploring. The Grande Santa Cruz Island, together with the smaller Little Santa Cruz Island, is a protected area.
Here’s a summary of the lagoon tour expense.
Boat to entrance: P200 (boat can accommodate up to 10 pax) Yellow paddle boat rental: P300 (good for 2 pax) Tour guide fee: P300 (good for up to 5 boats)
Vinta Rowing
The vinta is the traditional outrigger boat that is common in Mindanao, especially in the areas of southern Mindanao, Sulu archipelago, and the Zamboanga peninsula. It is famous for its vividly colorful rhombic sail, adding a splash of color to the waters of Sulu Sea.
The vinta plays an important role in the livelihood of the locals — economy, trade, and transportation. It is historically used as a fishing vessel. Today, it also serves as a mode of transportation for people, as a cargo vessel to deliver products/goods, and as a tourist attraction.
If you want to experience rowing or riding a vinta , you may charter one in any of the barangays along the city’s coastlines or you can do it when you visit Grande Santa Cruz Island.
Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar
Sitting northwest of Santa Cruz Grande Island, Little Santa Cruz Island is like a quick dash of paradise off the coast of the Zamboanga peninsula. The most recognizable feature of the island is the sandbar trailing on the easternmost point.
Although the island is fringed with fair sand, it is a mixture of fine and broken shells and corals. There are small lagoons, but tourists are not allowed to venture beyond sandbar. The surrounding waters are mostly deep, sea-grass-covered, and are not recommended for leisure swimming.
Visitors are only allowed to stay here for 10 minutes. But if you really want to make a stop here, a detour will cost you an additional P200.
Jump-off Point: Paseo del Mar (Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal) Additional fee if making a stop here: P200
ONCE ISLAS CRUISE (11 Islands)
A steadily rising tourist attraction is Once Islas (11 Islands), a string of islands and islets off the eastern coast of Zamboanga City. Not all islands are open to the public, but those that are accessible are great for swimming, sunbathing, and further exploring. There are designated snorkeling spots for those who want to take a peek into the underwater scene. Buh-Buh, Bisaya-Bisaya, Baung-Baung, and Sirommon are those that are accessible to the public.
The islands are only open for day trips. A limit of 200 visitors per day is implemented, so advance registration is required. You need to book online through [email protected] one week before your planned visit. Guidelines and steps will be emailed upon booking inquiry. Walk-ins are not entertained.
The jump off point is the Panubigan Ferry Terminal, roughly 1.5 hours from the city center.
Jump-off Point: Panubigan Ferry Terminal in Barangay Panubigan Operating Hours: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Tuesday – Thursday, Saturday – Sunday); CLOSED (Mondays & Fridays). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Boat Rates: P1,200 (BiBa or Bisaya-Bisaya and Baung-Baung Route, good for 5 pax); P2,000 (Island Cruise, good for 5 pax) Fees: P100/head (Entrance Fee); P100/head (Environmental Fee); P300 (Guide Fee; good for 5 pax); P150 (Cottage Fee)
Below are the accessible islands:
Bisaya-Bisaya Island
Bisaya-Bisaya Island is a two-faced island, with steep cliffs on one side but blanketed with fine white sand on the other. Its northern face is where you’ll find the sandy stretch, fringed with palm trees. From above, the beach area resembles a boomerang on patch of grass. In between the trees are a few huts where you could stay and enjoy coconut juice, which is for sale on site.
Not too far away is a smaller islet often dubbed a child of Bisaya-Bisaya. This one’s generally more rocky and jagged. It features a small natural pool that gets filled by the waves at high tide.
Our guide Sirna shared with us a folk tale about two fishermen, a Christian and a Muslim, who once stumbled upon the island that blessed them with fish. But the two did not agree on how they would divide the ocean bounty — since one of them caught much more than the other — so they decided to go their own way. According to our guide, “bisaya-bisaya” is the local term for “kanya-kanya” or not sharing.
Baung-Baung Island
Baung-Baung Island is an almost rectangular island whose southwestern end shimmers with its fine white sand. It’s usually the stop right after Bisaya-Bisaya because of its proximity to it. In fact, Baung-Baung has a trekking trail that will lead you to a viewpoint that affords a majestic view of Bisaya-Bisaya and the other islets around it. On Google Maps, it’s marked “Baong Island”.
Sirommon Island
Sirommon Island is the usual lunch stop for boat tours; thanks to its spacious huts. It also has a wide strip of white sand and a sand bar, which is probably why most tourists spend the most time here. It’s also a great snorkeling stop.
Buh-Buh Island
Buh-Buh Island is best known for its beachfront mosque. Pre-pandemic, tours would make a stop here, but we’re not sure whether or not it’s still the case. We didn’t set foot here, though.
ZAMBOANGA CITY HERITAGE TOUR
El museo de zamboanga.
El Museo de Zamboanga should be the first stop of any city tour. It offers a quick overview of the history and heritage of Zamboanga City, which explains much of what you’ll see as you visit more places through the day.
It has two galleries — the main gallery, housing the permanent exhibition, and another one for the temporary or seasonal exhibits. It showcases historical items and artifacts that narrate the colorful story of the region, its people, and its rich culture from the pre-colonial period to the more recent decades. The museum is nestled in the extensive Pasonanca Park.
Location: Hardin Maria Clara Lobregat Complex, Pasonanca Park, Pasonanca Road, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday – Saturday); CLOSED (Sundays). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official Facebook page for the latest update before going. Entrance Fee: P10 (Adults); P5 (Minors/Students/Seniors)
Pasonanca Park & Scout Limbaga Campsite
Opened to the public in the 1910s, the Pasonanca Park is another green space for nature lovers and those who want to have a quick escape from the much busier city center. It houses the Camp Limbaga (Scout Limbaga Campsite) with a convention center, an amphitheater, an aviary, a floral garden and butterfly sanctuary, and public swimming pools — a kiddie pool, a natural pool, and an Olympic-size pool.
Probably the most famous attraction is the Pasonanca Treehouse. Constructed in 1960, it was originally built to serve as the Youth Citizenship Training Center. Today, visitors come here to take photos, but if you want to spend more time here, you can rent the treehouse too! Make sure to contact the LGU’s admin first to coordinate. You can buy food along the way from the sidestreet restaurants, stores, and BBQ stands.
Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Admission Fee: FREE. The park itself is free, but the attractions impose their own entrance fees, usually ranging from P10 to P25 per head.
Climaco Freedom Park
Formerly known as Abong-Abong Park, the Climaco Freedom Park is situated about seven kilometers north of the city center. Named after the late Zamboanga City Mayor Cesar Climaco, a local hero who was assassinated in 1984. The park also serves as his final resting place.
The freedom park is a popular weekend destination for the locals and one of the rising tourist spots, attracting nature lovers of all ages. It encompasses a garden, Chrislam Pool, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts campsite, Heroes Hill, and the Holy Hill, which is the endpoint of the Station of the Cross trek.
Some of the things to do here are swimming, hiking, trekking, biking, having a picnic, and going on a religious pilgrimage and retreat.
Location: Climaco Freedom Park (Abong-Abong Park), Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 24/7 Admission Fee: P5-10
Fort Pilar Shrine and Museum
Also called Fortaleza del Pilar , Fort Pilar dates back to the 17th century, originally serving as a Spanish military defense post. Fast forward to the present, this bastioned fort is a major historical landmark of the city. Recognized as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973, the fort underwent restorations and is regularly maintained by the city.
It cradles an open-air 18th-century Marian shrine — Our Lady of the Pillar — with an altar and stone seating for the devotees who want to pray and reflect. On Sundays, monoblock chairs dot the area for the regular mass.
The fort also houses a regional branch of the National Museum of the Philippines, the bells of the Sanctuary to the Lady of the Pillar, and a fountain. The fort is located near Paseo del Mar and Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.
Location: N.S. Valderosa Street, Santa Barbara, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: Fort Pilar Shrine 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily); National Museum 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Monday – Friday), CLOSED (Saturdays & Sundays). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Admission Fee: FREE
ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary
Tucked within the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology , just a stone’s throw from Fort Pilar and Paseo del Mar, the bird sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers, particularly bird watchers.
The vast mangrove-fringed pond is a protected area, where great white egrets breed and thrive. Other migratory birds also frequent the site.
Two designated view decks are accessible for those who want to spend some time here. The best time for birdwatching is early morning or late afternoon, while the best months are November to March.
Location: Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Daily). Note that the visiting hours might change without prior notice. Check with the ZSCMST management for the updated schedule. Entrance Fee: FREE
Paseo del Mar
Just across Fort Pilar is Paseo del Mar , a waterfront recreational park facing the Basilan Strait. Aside from the souvenir shops, local food vendors, and eateries, the newly renovated park added a children’s playground and a skatepark, making it a favorite hang-out place for the locals.
It caters not just to families, friends, and couples but also to those who want to spend their alone time or me-time. Several tables and chairs are arranged for those who like to go food tripping here. Local dishes, snacks, and street fare are available. Benches also line the boardwalk, where sunset revelers lounge to watch the sunlight paints the sky with a beautiful gradient of colors as the day turns into night.
Location: N.S. Valderosa Street, Santa Barbara, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 12:30 AM (Daily). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Admission Fee: FREE
Canelar Barter Trade Center
OK, first things first, despite the name, you need cash when shopping here so please put down whatever it is you plan to trade. 🤣 The name is a nod to the trading system of exchanging goods that was widely practiced in this part of the world back in the day.
Today, however, it functions just like any other shopping center. Time to brush up on your haggling skills when you dive into this shopping paradise, tempting you with its cheap imported offerings from the neighboring countries Indonesia and Malaysia.
Alongside local products, a wide array of imported goods are sold here — souvenirs, food, clothes, fabrics, gadgets, accessories, among others. Get a hold of your favorite Malaysian or Indonesian chocolates, coffee brands (Old Town Cofee and others), and milk tea (teh tarik) at relatively cheaper prices. Lastly, don’t forget to pause and breathe. Good? Okay. Let the second wave of haggling and negotiating begin!
Location: Canelar Barter Trade Center, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Tuesday – Sunday), 7:30 AM – 6:30 PM (Mondays). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going.
Zamboanga City Hall
Smack at the very heart of the city center, where well-preserved colonial structures are clustered, the Zamboanga City Hall is considered one of the important heritage sites in the city.
Recognized as a National Historical Site, it was originally used as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the then Moro Province. Later on, it became the government seat of the former Zamboanga Province. It has been serving as the administrative seat of Zamboanga City since 1937. Rizal Park or Plaza Rizal is just across the city hall.
Location: N.S. Valderosa Street, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday – Friday), 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Saturdays), CLOSED (Sundays). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going.
Yakan Weaving Village
While in Zamboanga City, don’t pass up the opportunity to take home the best tangible souvenirs you can buy — products made from the exquisite Yakan fabric, which takes time to finish, depending on the intricacy of the designs and patterns. The Yakan are the traditional inhabitants of Basilan and other areas in this part of Mindanao.
Here in Zamboanga City, you’ll find the Yakan Weaving Village , which harbors local shops selling traditional products and practical accessories including bags, purses, pencil cases, and even yards of Yakan fabrics. You can also watch (or try for yourself!) the traditional process of Yakan weaving.
Location: Upper Calarian, Labuan – Limpapa National Road, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going.
ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP
Curacha (spanner crabs).
Nope. We are not talking about the Filipino femme fatale movie character played by Rossana Roces nor actual cockroaches! Curacha means cockroach in the Chavacano language, but — before you lose your appetite — we’re not asking you to go full Fear Factor here. Instead, we’re inviting you to have a taste of the most mouth-watering crustaceans that Zamboanga has to offer — spanner crabs! (It got its name because of its spiky appearance.)
So what is it exactly? We are talking about Zamboanga’s gastronomic gem. Curacha looks like the love child of a huge crab and a hairy lobster. Known for its consistent red appearance, whether raw or cooked, it is sought after because it’s meatier than other crabs and packs more flavor. Thankfully, they thrive in the bosom of the Sulu Sea.
Your trip won’t be complete without trying a dish or two. Alavar’s Seafood Restaurant is famous for its curacha dish cooked in its equally popular specialty sauce.
If you want to take some home, head over to Aderes Flea Market in Guiwan, where you can purchase fresh fresh, uncooked curacha at a lower price. Lobsters are also available!
Moro Cuisine
The Filipino Muslims, also known as the Moros, take pride in their distinct cuisine. Although sharing some similarities with other parts of the country in terms of seasonings and ingredients like garlic, onions, and ginger, what make Moro cuisine different are other spices like turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime — which are more commonly used by our ASEAN neighbors. It also utilizes burnt or blackened coconut meat in some dishes.
Some of the Moro faves are beef randang, piaparan, bakas, chicken pyanggang, pater, dodol, and lukatis. If you want to sample several dishes in one sitting, the latal is your best choice. It is a platter of some native dishes of the region.
Both Bay Tal Mal (at SM Mindpro) and Dennis Coffee Garden (near the airport) have latal on their menu.
Knickerbocker
After a sumptuous native Moro food fest, end it “sweetly” with a tall serving of Zamboanga’s iconic dessert — the knickerbocker.
A what? A hybrid of fruit salad and halo-halo, Zamboanga’s knickerbocker usually combines slices of fruits, gelatin, and shaved ice. It is then doused in milk and topped with a scoop of ice cream.
The Palmeras , also known as Hacienda de Palmeras , is said to be the home of the original knickerbocker and is credited for inventing this refreshing dessert.
Satti and Street Food
Of course! Any TPT trip isn’t complete without delving into the street food scene! These everyday accessible munchies tell a lot about the place, its people, and its culture. You can find street food anywhere, especially in busy areas like the public market and around the city hall.
Paseo del Mar has its share of street grubs and snacks. R.T. Lim Boulevard also hosts a number of street food peddlers. Some of the streetfood choices are satay or “ihaw-ihaw”, pastil, sicalang, and lokot-lokot. But our favorite is mi goreng!
But perhaps the most iconic of all is satti , a breakfast favorite among locals. Satti is usually skewered beef or chicken, grilled and then served half-dipped in a bowl of spicy sauce with rice shaped into cubes!
When we asked the locals where to find the best satti in the city, all fingers pointed at Jimmy’s Satti . Unfortunately, we weren’t able to try it, but we had our helping from Dennis Coffee Garden, which also serves satti.
OTHER WORTHY ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES
Zamboanga hermosa festival.
The city’s annual celebration of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is dedicated to its patron saint La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar . It’s a month-long festivity that takes place in October; the first two weeks of which are usually packed with activities, peaking in the second week, particularly on the feast day of the patron saint, which is on the 12th day of October.
One of the main events is the Regatta de Zamboanga , a vinta race participated by hundreds of vinta owners and operators. All the participants are residents of Zamboanga.
Festival Date: Month of October
Taluksangay Mosque
If you trace the roots of Islam in Zamboanga, they will most likely lead you to the coastal village of Taluksangay on the southeast coast of the city. Here, just next to the barangay hall, stands a historic mosque. It is believed that it is here that Islam began to spread in the peninsula.
Constructed in 1885 by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno, the Taluksangay Mosque is said to be the oldest in Western Mindanao and the first in Zamboanga Peninsula. The mosque’s most recognizable features are the two minarets.
This off-route destination is mostly visited by Muslims and history buffs.
Location: Taluksungay Mosque, Barangay Taluksungay, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: Visitors can enter the mosque anytime EXCEPT during prayer times, which happen five times a day. It’s best to drop by the barangay hall, which is located just beside the mosque. Please observe visiting rules and protocols.
Merloquet Falls
Located about two hours away from the city center, near the boundary with Zamboanga Sibugay in the north and Zamboanga del Norte in the west, the magnificent two-tiered Merloquet Falls is regarded as one of the most beautiful not only in the region but in the country. The most photographed is the wide terraced drop, creating magical, intricate textured cascades instead of just a smooth straight drop.
The path leading to the falls is quite developed with concrete roads and a designated parking area for vehicles. On foot, the trek to the falls entails many cemented pathways and steps. Nonetheless, this may still be quite difficult for those who are physically challenged.
There are several swimming areas, but mind your steps because some parts are slippery. The best time to visit is in the wet/rainy season.
Location: Merloquet Falls Road, Barangay Sibulao, Zamboanga City Admission Fee: FREE Parking Fee: P20
Learn Chavacano
Zamboanga is often called Asia’s Latin City because of the heavy Hispanic influences. And it’s most apparent in its most dominant language — Chavacano (or Chabacano), the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It is like a combination of Spanish and local languages, and it’s quite fascinating!
Why not learn Chavacano while in Zamboanga? Start from the basics such as greetings and useful phrases that you can use while in the city. It is also a good way to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture.
- Welcome! = Bienvenidos!
- Thank you very much. = Muchisimas Gracias.
- Good morning! = Buenas Dias!
- Good afternoon! = Buenas Tardes!
- Good evening! = Buenas Noches!
- I’m sorry. – Perdona mi.
- How much is this? – Cuanto esté?

10 Instagrammable Spots in Zamboanga Peninsula
White sand beaches and sublime sunsets, dramatic waterfalls and lush mountains—Zamboanga Peninsula has all these and more. This emerging tourist destination has got all kinds of travelers covered from the nature lover to the culture geek, the history buff to the adventurous gastronome.
With this, it is no wonder that the region is teeming with sites that make for memorable photos. It is hard to pick just 10 given the region’s wealth of Instagram-worthy spots, but here are some that have become favorites among travelers.
1. Great Santa Cruz Island, Zamboanga City
This island is best known for its unique pink sand resulting from crushed red organ pipe corals that blend with white sand.
The blush pink sand is so remarkable that in 2017, National Geographic included the island on its best beaches list.
The surrounding turquoise waters teem with rich marine life making it ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. There is also a yellow boat tour of the lagoon and its mangroves where visitors can interact with stingless jellyfish and feast on edible sea grapes (latok) freshly harvested from the waters.
The number of visitors to the island is regulated. Guests who wish to visit the island can coordinate with the Tourism Office in Zamboanga City’s Paseo del Mar at least a day in advance.
2. Once Islas, Zamboanga City
Once Islas is a cluster of eleven largely uninhabited islands and islets. Only four of the eleven—Bisaya-Bisaya, Sirommon, Buh-Buh, and Baung-Baung— have been developed and opened to visitors since 2018.
Over the years, the islands have become a popular eco-tourism hub with a strict Garbage In-Garbage Out policy. Visitors can engage in low-impact activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and trekking.
The islands’ immaculate white sand, gin-clear waters, verdant greenery, and the colorful Vinta sails adorning the beach fronts make excellent backdrops for photos.
For bookings, email [email protected] or call (062) 975 6341.
3. Heritage Zone, Zamboanga City
A leisurely walk around the Heritage Zone of Zamboanga City gives visitors a taste of its rich history. From the imposing Fort Pilar to its opulent City Hall, there is no shortage of IG-worthy places to take selfies with.
In between these historic structures are a smattering of other landmarks like Plaza Pershing and Pettit Barracks. Century-old Acacia trees lining the streets provide much-needed shade.
Visitors will also get to pass by the first BPI branch in Mindanao. Opened in 1912, the branch is well preserved and is still operational. A McDonald’s branch that is located in a quaint Victorian-inspired building built in 1928 is just a stone’s throw away.
4. Dakak Resort and Properties, Zamboanga del Norte
A sentimental favorite among many travelers, Dakak retains much of the charm that made it the “it” place in Mindanao in the ‘90s.
Dakak’s white sand beach is a jump off point for water activities such as scuba diving, kayaking, and banana boat riding. While its Adventure Zone offers outdoor activities such as rappelling, trekking, and rock climbing.
The resort has accommodations that offer scenic views of the Sulu Sea and the surrounding cliffs and mountains.
For reservations, visit Dakak Beach Resort’s official website .
5. Dipolog Boulevard , Zamboanga del Norte
Dipolog’s answer to Manila Bay, this charming 2.6 km-long esplanade rewards visitors with gorgeous sunsets over the Sulu Sea.
The best time to go on a stroll is an hour or so before the sun sets as hawkers start setting up shop. Munch on a basket of fried chicken skin and lick on a cone of dragon fruit ice cream bought from nearby vendors while watching the sun dip over the horizon.
6. Lapuyan Falls, Zamboanga del Sur
Secluded and accessible via a steep staircase, Lapuyan Falls seems every bit like the hidden gem that it is. The waterfall is surrounded by a thick forest which the local Subanens say is protected by a female deity.
Guests who do not wish to get themselves wet can stay on the deck overlooking the waterfalls. The deck is also where members of a Subanen performing group stage cultural presentations upon arrangement with the tourism office .
A few minutes away by car from Lapuyan Falls is The Heritage House where visitors can learn more about Subanen culture and cuisine. Guests can also stay overnight at the house for a minimal fee.
7. Pahali Resort, Malamawi Island, Isabela de Basilan
Dubbed as the “crown jewel” of Basilan’s tourism, Malamawi’s wide stretch of powdery white sand and azure waters make it worthy of this title.
The waves do not get too rough which makes the beach ideal for a lazy dip. Activities such as speed boating and scuba diving are available.
The resort also has a hiking trail that leads to the island’s highest point. The trek to the top is a bit challenging but the breathtaking views of the sea and the mountains sure are rewarding.
It is best to coordinate with the Isabela de Basilan Tourism Office prior to visiting.
8. Cabunbata Falls, Isabela de Basilan
Visible from the highway is the towering Cabunbata Falls. Partly enclosed by mahogany and rubber trees, this multi-tiered waterfall affords visitors with a relaxing dip in its refreshing waters.
An artificial platform by the catchbasin had been built where travelers can picnic or pose for photos without getting themselves wet
9. Marang-marang Floating Cottages, Isabela de Basilan
These two floating cottages are located within a broad expanse of protected mangroves that is home to the Sama Banguigui people.
Aside from the tranquil surroundings, this is a great place to try an authentic Sama and Tausug seafood spread prepared by members of the Marang Marang Women’s Association. Not only are the dishes fresh and delicious, they are Instagrammable as well. They come in all shapes and colors and are served on top of equally colorful indigenous woven placemats.
10. Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands, Zamboanga Sibugay
Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands serves as a roosting, foraging, and layover area for various migratory birds. Out of the 53 waterbird species spotted in the thick mangroves, 37 of them are migratory.
Due to the diversity of the birds that visit and settle in the area, it is becoming a popular site for birdwatchers. It also serves as an ecotourism destination that promotes environmental conservation and awareness.
Aside from birdwatching, visitors can rent a kayak or a boat. There is even an eco-brick boat made with recycled plastic bottles.

17 TOP Zamboanga City Tourist Spots + Things to Do
Try to visit Zamboanga City and it may become your favorite city in Mindanao, too! This beautiful and historically & culturally rich city goes by many names, including “ Asia’s Latin City ,” the “ Sardines Capital of the Philippines ” and as per myself the most colorful city I’d been to in the Philippines. Here are the top Zamboanga City tourist spots + things to do in Zamboanga City!
1. Go on a city tour
2. yakan weaving village, 3. sta. cruz island (pink beach), 4. once islas, 5. merloquet falls, 6. paseo del mar, 7. go on a food trip, 8. enjoy a seaside staycation, 9. day trip to basilan, 10. rainbow mosque, 11. taluksangay mosque, 12. lantawan grassland, 13. hermosa falls, 14. join a farm tour, 15. bird watching, 16. canelar barter trade center, 17. join the zamboanga hermosa festival, what to read next:.
Due to its history as a main stronghold of the Spanish force during the colonial era and its diverse population (a mix of Samal, Yakan, Tausug and Badjao people), Zamboanga boasts a rich culture to explore. And what better way to do that than to go on a city tour?
Some of the interesting places you can visit in the city are:
Please enable JavaScript
- Panasonca Park (including El Museo de Zamboanga, Boy Scout Camp & Memorial Park and the Tree House)
- Fort Pilar Shrine
- City Hall of Zamboanga City (including the I love Zamboanga signage)
- Plaza Pershing
It is possible to do a walking tour from the Fort Pilar Shrine to the City Hall to Plaza Pershing. You can do this DIY or with a local tour agency, where you can get a local guide to show you around. Your guide will give not only historical info but also insights on the actual life of Zamboangenos (and how it differs from what you know in the media) and even point out landmarks you might miss on your own.
A walking tour is a great way to feel & experience the city. What I liked about the walking tour personally is I get to see how open and ordinary the city is. I was also interested at the ancestral buildings that have been kept or remodeled, including ordinary houses and commercial ones like BPI and McDonalds.
The Yakan Weaving Village is one of the must-see Zamboanga City tourist spots. It’s a small village composed of several commercial stalls where you can see and buy traditional woven products by the Yakan, such as cloths, bags, purses, hats and accessories. The fabrics in these products have various colors and bold geometric designs. You can also witness a live demonstration of traditional weaving.
For a bit of background, the Yakans are a Filipino tribe native to Basilan . They have a tradition of weaving dresses (called semmek) using plant fibers such as abaca and pineapple. Nowadays, they have expanded their craft to include other products to be sold to locals & tourists in Zamboanga City.
Fun fact : Each product takes days to complete. For example, a malong may take 5-7 days to weave and is sold in a reasonable price.
Honestly, the products here are a great buy considering the labor and quality of the woven fabrics. I’m surprised a lot of the cloths don’t go by the thousands. My favorite buys here are a pair of woven earrings and wallets.
In the past, there was Boracay , Palawan and Sta. Cruz in Zamboanga. These were the most popular beaches in the Philippines. The Great Sta. Cruz Island , more popularly known as the “ Pink Beach ” may have been shadowed by other islands in recent times, but it still remains a great destination for beach bummers. In fact, recently it has been included in National Geographic’s Best Beaches in the World .
Aside from swimming in the Pink Beach, there are other activities you can do in this island such as going on a vinta ride, getting a close encounter with stingless jellyfishes (similar to that in Sohoton Cove ) and enjoying a seafood lunch.
Once Islas is a newly opened eco-cultural island hopping destination in Zamboanga. It had its soft opening sometime in July 2018. Here, expect to see pristine islands and white-sand beaches managed by the local communities. Although there are 11 islands in total (hence the name), currently only 3-4 are open to the public. These are Bisaya-Bisaya , Sirommon , Baung-Baung and Buh-Buh islands .
If you’re nature trekking, you’ll appreciate a visit to Merloquet Falls. Merloquet Falls is a two-tier waterfall located in Barangay Sibulao. Its main charm is the waterfall at the bottom, which stands 10 meters high and 15 minutes wide and features a stair-like rock formation. Many agree that it’s one of the most scenic waterfalls in the Philippines .
Merloquet Falls is 1.5-2 hours away from the city and it involves a trek down a 370-step stair. Due to its location, it’s best to allot a day to visit this waterfall.

Paseo del Mar is a seaside promenade where you can enjoy the afternoons off, but the real magic happens at night when it becomes alive with live band performances and street food hawkers. If you’re visiting Zamboanga City but don’t have time to visit specific restaurants, most likely you’ll find the local food you’re looking for here.
This is also where you can find the registration area for Sta. Cruz Island.
Forget your diet once you step foot in Zamboanga City! There are a lot of good restaurants in Zamboanga City serving local delicacies and snacks.
Some of the must-try dishes here are curacha crab served with alavar sauce , the many flavors of a plateful of latal , and knickerbocker for dessert. Due to its advantageous location, the city also enjoys plentiful catch from the sea, so if you want cheap & fresh seafood, you’ve come to the right place!
Zamboanga has a lot of local snacks and dishes to try, so make sure to allot time and budget for eating galore.

If you’re looking for some R&R, head over to Vista del Mar Resort & Recreation Center in Zamboanga City. This beachfront resort has amazing views — you can spend a whole afternoon just gazing out at the sea and the occasional sail vintas.
This resort offers charming casitas for overnight stays. It also has an alfresco restaurant that serves fresh seafood such as curacha and other local delicacies. Their in-house restaurant is personally one of my favorites during our Zamboanga City food trip !

From Zamboanga City, the province of Basilan is only a ferry away. Most tourists go here for a day tour at Malamawi White Beach , which is one of the most beaches in Mindanao. Malamawi White Beach is a beachfront resort boasting white sand and blue water. If you’re not rushed for time, you can also visit another island called Lampinigan Island, where you can find a local community and one of the best beaches you’ll find in the Philippines.

Rainbow Mosque (or Masjid Al-Islamia ) is said to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the Philippines. It’s visited not just by Muslims but other locals and tourists as well for its inspiring architecture. The color is said to represent the various colors of Zamboanga City and signifies peace and unity. The interior and exterior of this mosque is adorned with traditional Maranao designs.

Although it’s not as popular as other tourist spots in Zamboanga City, Taluksangay Mosque is a great place to see especially for those interested in history. It’s considered the oldest mosque in Zamboanga Peninsula and it’s said that this is where Islam began to spread to the rest of the region.
Taluksangay Mosque was built in 1885 by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno. Its distinguishing features are two minarets. It’s located in the southeast coast of the city, a little off-the-beaten-road from most tourist attraction.
Lantawan Grassland is a hidden gem in Zamboanga City. It’s a scenic hill located about 20-25 minutes away from the city proper, offering panoramic views of Zamboanga City. From here, you can also see Mount Pulong Bato and the Pasonanca Natural Watershed, one of the oldest watershed in the Philippines.
This area is developed, with open cottages, tables, and even food stalls so tourists can enjoy a snack while enjoying the view.
It’s suggested to go here in the late afternoon for sunset viewing. However, if you prefer lesser people, then drop by in the morning.

If you’re up for some trekking and nature tripping, you can visit Hermosa Falls in Zamboanga City. From the city center, you need to travel for 40 minutes to Barangay Pamucutan and then proceed through narrow roads via a motorcycle until you reach the jump-off point to the waterfall. From there, it will only take you a 5-minute walk to reach the waterfall.
Hermosa Falls features two small streams and a wide basin, where you can swim and even cliff jump. While it isn’t as grand as other waterfalls in Mindanao, the feeling of having discovered this hidden gem in Zamboanga City is a reward enough for tourists.
If you’re interested in having a nature & agricultural tour, you might want to visit the farms in Zamboanga City.
NJB Farm offers activities such as carabao ride, mango picking and tours to the milk station and mini forest. Meanwhile, Dragon Fruit Farm lets you see and taste how dragon fruits are taken care of and harvested.
Zamboanga City is one of the best places in the country to observe bird life. All in all, you can find over 180 species of endemic and migratory birds here.
Pasonanca Watershed is the home of endemic species such as Zamboanga Bulbul, White-eared Tailorbird and Wattled Broadbill. Meanwhile, ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary is the breeding ground for what was once a migratory bird species, the elegant white Great Egret.
Another great place for bird watching is Kabug Island in Siay , which is 2.5 hours from Zamboanga City.
Before you go home from Zamboanga City, make sure to stop by the Canelar Barter Trade Center to buy your pasalubong!
This place sells not only local products in Zamboanga but also food from Malaysia and commercial products from Indonesia. You can buy packs of Maggi mee goreng, teh tarik or Old Town coffee. Or clothing, scarfs, bags and wallets for your friends and family back at home.
On your way here, you may also pass by carts selling fruits like sweet lansones and mangosteen for cheap, compared to the inflated prices in Manila. 😉
Every October, Zamboanga celebrates the Hermosa Festival in honor of Our Lady of the Pillar. It’s a month-long celebration filled with activities, competitions and food fests! From an exciting boat race using traditional vintas to a colorful fashion competition with mascota gowns and a climatic street dance, this event is one of the things you should definitely experience in Asia’s Latin City.
Make sure to stay for at least a few days to see the highlights of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. We stayed for 5-6 days and it was amazing.

15 Best Things to Do in Zamboanga City (the Philippines)
The 3rd largest city in the Philippines, Zamboanga City operates as the commercial and industrial center of the south. The city is bustling with a factory district, plenty of businesses, shops, and markets where you can find any good or service that you desire.
Dubbed “Asia’s Latin City”, you’ll see a Spanish influence in Zamboaga City, more so than in the rest of the country. For a while, Spanish was even an official language of Zamboanga City. Zamboangueño people are very proud of their cultural roots and heritage. You’ll see reflections of this in the food, language, and architecture.
It’s important to know, however, that Zamboanga City does not see many foreigners or travelers as it is located near a state of conflict. Guerilla groups live in the south of the Philippines, not too far from this gem of a city. Security has been boosted with the National Guard all around checking IDs and keeping a close watch of suspicious activity with the aims of maintaining peace. Travelers tend to keep their distance lately, but if you do decide to go to Zamboanga City, go with a Filipino that knows their way around the safest areas. Locals will definitely be surprised and happy to see you.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Zamboanga City :
1. Merloquet Falls
One could argue that the most majestic falls in Zamboanga city are the Merloquet Falls. This natural beauty looks more like an ancient ruin where a waterfall has magically decided to run through it, rather than a wall of rocks. It’s truly breathtaking.
Surrounded by jungle, you’ll come across a cool pool of water being fed by tiers of waterfall rocks. There are a couple platforms under the biggest section of the waterfall where you can give yourself a waterfall massage or just hang out and listen to the soothing sounds.
2. Paseo del Mar
Who doesn’t love a causal boardwalk along the water? Paseo del Mar offers just that with the addition of small shops, restaurants, and food carts for you to browse. There is also Zamboanga City’s pride and joy, the Dancing Fountain which shoots water into the air, captivating each passersby for a solid minute or two.
From the boardwalk, you can see the big and little Santa Cruz Islands, as well as the Basilan Island just to the south.
The evening is the perfect time to visit as the weather isn’t too hot and the lighting creates a romantic ambiance. There are police offers patrolling so you don’t need to worry about an abundance of sketchy situations.
3. Fort Pilar
You can most certainly see the Spanish influence in Fort Pilar, a 17th-century fort of defense built and used by the Spanish military.
Upon your visit, you’ll be welcomed by a large courtyard with a wide brick path leading up to the regal fortress which looks like something out of the Alamo. Fort Pilar is adorned with dozens of bright white stars surrounding an outdoor shrine for Roman Catholics who believe that the Christian mother Mary appeared here many years ago.
Feel free to come here for Sunday mass to see how Filipinos worship in Zamboanga City.
4. Rio Hondo Village
You’re in for some culture shock when you visit Rio Hondo Village. A collection of shanty wood houses built on stilts over the water, this village gives you a glimpse into how a large percentage of Filipinos live below the poverty line.
Despite their humble quarters, the people of Rio Hondo Village are extremely friendly, especially the children who spend their days fishing in small boats and playing in the water.
Walk on the long boardwalk in-between houses where you’ll find areas to buy handicrafts and small shops where you can contribute to the local economy by purchasing snacks and beverages.
5. Yakan Weaving Village
At Yakan Weaving Village, you can observe colorful textiles being made on the spot. You’ll most likely recognize these popular textiles as you’ve seen them in the form of purses, parkas, and more along your travels in the Philippines.
There are plenty of handicrafts to be purchased such as hand carved Basilian Pira Swords, satchels, scarves, and textiles to take home as souvenirs. You won’t find price tags on these goods so get ready to haggle a price that leaves both you and the vendor satisfied.
6. Pasonanca Park
A natural paradise in the middle of Zamboanga City, you could easily spend all day here at Pasonanca Park.
Most tourists come to visit the picturesque Zamboanga Tree House built back in 1963. Climb the stairs to enter as you daydream about living the tree house life.
The main event for your kiddos, however, will be the Pasonanca Kiddie Pool equipped with tall waterslides that spit them out into a cool pool of water next to a natural waterfall. For the whole family, there are 3 public pools including one Olympic-sized swimming pool and one natural-flowing pool.
7. Great Santa Cruz Island
Visible from the mainland is Great Santa Cruz Island. This small piece of rock, sand, and mangrove is absolutely worth a day trip.
To get there, head to Paseo del Mar where boats are waiting to jet you to the island on an enjoyable 20-minute ride. You’ll then transfer to another boat which will serve as your tour guide around the island.
Your boat will navigate through the dense mangroves as you do a little bird watching for Purple Herons, egrets, and other graceful creatures. In the blue lagoon, keep an eye out for jellyfish, coral, and interesting water vegetation. The last stop will be at Pink Beach; you’ve never seen anything like it! Imagine pink sand next to turquoise water. It’s a life-changer.
8. Little Santa Cruz Island
From the air, Little Santa Cruz Island is just a small sand bar in the middle of the sea. From land, it’s pretty much the same- which is awesome. This is literally a beach in the middle of the warm, clear, turquoise water. It doesn’t get any more paradisiacal than this!
Boats leave the mainland to Little Santa Cruz Island twice per day: once at 6am and once at 3pm on a ‘first come first serve basis’. You’ll stay for a few hours enjoying the awe-inspiring realization that this is indeed real life. Bring snacks and beverages with you, as there are no stalls, clean drinking water, or shops on the island.
9. Bayangan Island
Attention all divers: if you want go on an underwater adventure while in Zamboanga City, Banyangan Island offers some great views. You’ll find plenty of tour shops in the city selling package tours with competitive prices. Underwater, visibility is nice and there are tons of fish to be seen.
If you’re not a diver, Bayangan offers other forms of fun for you. This strange little island consists of an unusually wide beachy perimeter and a small patch of jungle in the middle. It’s clean, shady, and provides a great space for climbing and exploring.
10. Go Island Hopping
You’ll find dozens of little islands around Zamboanga city, each one more beautiful than the next. There are 11 islands to be exact, all of which are perfect to incorporate into a day of island hopping. Hire a boat to take you to Buluan Island, the Sibugay Sinking Island, Pandilusan Island, and more. Bring a snorkel and discover the marine life hiding below the surface.
Alternatively, you can rent a kayak and go on an island tour of your own. There are a few islands within reach from the shore- just wear a lifejacket!
11. Caragasan Beach
A 30-minute Jeepney ride from the city lays Caragasan Beach, a spot that is quite popular with the locals.
You’ll enjoy the beach with its cool waters and coarse sand between your toes. You can watch a flurry of boats coming in and out, some with tourists and others with merchandise.
But the main attraction at Caragasan Beach is the night market! This night market has some of the freshest seafood, vegetables, and local delicacies. Better yet, the prices are ridiculously affordable which means that you can eat until you’re stuffed.
12. Nancy Falls
No trip to Zamboanga City is complete without a visit to Nancy Falls. You’ll feel as if you’re in a Jurassic Park Movie (probably the 3rd one) as you sit in the back of the bumpy Jeepney, making your way through the jungle to the base of the falls.
You’ll be taken to the bottom of the waterfall where a system of natural waterfalls flow down into a cool pool at your feet. Don’t be shy; you can hop right in. There are wooding plank bridges that you can climb along while exploring the brush.
13. Canelar Barter Trade Center
It’s time to put your haggling skills to the test at Canelar Barter Trade Center. This covered market is full of stalls selling colorful Filipino handicrafts and souvenirs to take home. For the ladies, there are dresses and traditional Filipina garments everywhere you turn. For the men, you have a nice selection of sunglasses, flip-flops and a few stalls with clothing.
The Canelar Barter Trade Center specializes in doorknockers and manual doorbells that are shaped like deer, oxen, chickens, and lions. This would certainly be a unique memento to walk away with.
14. Tagbilat Falls
If you’re up for a 1-kilometer walk through the jungle that leads you to a dam-like waterfall, then why not check out Tagbilat Falls? Take a guide with you who will lead you through the unmarked jungle paths until you get to the natural swimming pool and tall falls. Off the beaten path, this site is as raw and unspoiled as it gets.
Locals are most familiar with these falls as they are closest to town and many tourists like to visit. Although this has become a popular spot, you aren’t going to find food vendors out here. Bring your own snacks, water, and don’t forget a change of clothes!
15. La Vista del Mar
Once you arrive, you’ll understand why La Vista del Mar is so often used as a wedding location!
Here is the perfect place for you and your loved one to have a romantic dinner in a quite and peaceful area. La Vista del Mar is a seaside restaurant that captures stunning views of the sunset, receives a refreshing breeze off the sea at night, has a lovely boardwalk to take a stroll, and of course, serves up some incredible dishes that turns visitors into regulars.
Try the tuna belly, Lapulapu sweet and sour, and vegetables cooked in coconut milk. You won’t be disappointed.

ZAMBOANGA CITY | 50 THINGS TO DO & TOURIST SPOTS TO VISIT 2023
Every afternoon after our kid wakes from his nap, we’d quickly go out of our hotel, ride a jeep to pueblo , walk along the old downtown area of Zamboanga City, and be transported back in time. In our mind, this was probably how Manila looked and felt, back in the day. The view would then open up to the sea. We’d buy some snacks, sit beside the breakwater, and along with school kids out with their friends, and wait for the sun to say adios . Those are my memories of our trip to Zamboanga.
We spent four days in and around the city, exploring not only its downtown area, but a few of its outlying islands and islets as well. It is, surprisingly, very walkable, and more importantly, very safe. Besides our usual afternoon jaunt to Paseo Del Mar, we were able to do quite a lot of things and were able to visit more than a few sights in Zamboanga City. With its numerous tourist spots, a weekend trip is definitely not enough to see everything.
PUEBLO / DOWNTOWN ZAMBOANGA
This is the heart of Zamboanga City. The downtown area, dubbed in Chavacano —the local language in the city—as Pueblo . It is located right beside the sea, on the southern part of the peninsula. This is where it’s all happening and also the gateway to Zamboanga’s Pink Sand Beach in Sta. Cruz Island. Let’s start our steps from one of the most iconic places in Zamboanga City, Fort Pilar and move westward from there.
A National Cultural Treasure, Fort Pilar is a military stone fortress constructed by the Spaniards in the 1600s. It was used as defense against pirates and Moro raiders from Jolo, and its cornerstone marked the founding date of Zamboanga as a city. It was built with the help of Mexicans and Peruvians, leading to the development of the Zamboangenos creole language, Chavacano . Visitors are allowed to access its courtyard and climb its fortifications.

Built on the outer eastern wall of Fort Pilar is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa . It was built in 1734 after the Virgin Mary was reported to have appeared in front of a soldier along the city gates. It’s now used as an outdoor church where mass is held daily.

National Museum Western Southern-Mindanao
Fort Pilar now houses the National Museum Western Southern-Mindanao regional museum. It has a permanent exhibit of the 18th century Griffin Shipwreck, rock collections from around the Philippines, weavings from Yakan, Subanun, and Sama tribes, the Lepa houseboat, and over 400 species of marine life from Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu.

Paseo Del Mar
Situated beside Fort Pilar and right by the sea is Zamboanga City’s hang out place, Paseo Del Mar. The plaza has numerous restaurants and stalls hawking everything from sticks of fish balls to plates of curachas . It also has a massive playground complete with a skate park and a dancing fountain. The ferry terminal to Sta. Cruz Island is located here.

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary
If you don’t know it, you couldn’t tell that there’s a small lake located just beside Fort Pilar. Situated inside the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences & Technology (ZSCMST) compound, the lake is a sanctuary for migratory and non-migratory birds. It’s a welcome and unexpected sight after visiting the popular Fort Pilar tourist spot.

BPI Zamboanga Museum
Along one of downtown’s main avenues stand the old BPI Zamboanga building. It’s a normal functioning BPI branch, only it looks like a house, is made of wood, and is distinguished as BPI’s second branch in the Philippines. But more than that, it has a museum on its second floor. The building used to be the residence of a wealthy Chinese trader, Don Francisco Barrios before it became General John J. Pershing’s house when he was assigned to suppress insurrections in Mindanao.

Zamboanga City Hall
Walk a few more steps and you’d pass by the stately Zamboanga City Hall. Constructed in 1905 by the US Government in Filipino colonial design, it used to serve as the residence of the US Military Governor of the Moro Province. The building, built from stone and wood, is open to the public—as all normal city halls are.

McDonald’s & Jollibee Zamboanga
Across the street from Rizal Park are two of the country’s most popular fast food chains. While, these aren’t usually tourist spots, the ones in Zamboanga City’s downtown are quite curious since they are housed on colonial-style structures. McDonald’s occupies a repurposed Victorian neo-classical building that used to house the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1928. Jollibee, on the other hand, is housed in a faux bahay na bato structure reminiscent of those in Vigan City .
ADDRESS: Maria Clara St., Downtown GPS MAP: 6.904535, 122.076501 Entrance Fee: Free OPENING HOURS: 6:30AM to 7:00PM, Daily
Plaza Pershing
Another famous park within the area is Plaza Pershing. It’s a pocket park with a neo-classical gazebo named after the American Governor that once lived at the second floor of BPI Zamboanga. The park actually hosts small trade fairs among other things. During one of my visits, the park was full of stalls selling cactuses and other ornamental plants. I even bought some as pasalubong for my mother-in-law.

From the Zamboanga Public Market near the city hall, ride a jeep to R.T. Lim Boulevard or Cawa-Cawa Boulevard. Zamboanga’s baywalk is a popular place for locals, especially during the afternoons and early evening. The seaside park is clean and very safe. It’s a good place to walk or jog as it stretches for about 600 meters. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset while munching on street food. On the far end of the boulevard, tables and chairs are set for balut, penoy , and beef chicharon —the accompanying vinegar, which range from mild to very spicy, is a must try.

JMDN Seaview
A couple of meters from the end of R.T. Lim Boulevard is another sunset viewpoint, JMDN Seaview. This place, however, has no benches, or anything else for that matter. It’s just a vacant lot where people traveling on cars and motorcycles park to see the view of the setting sun.

Zamboanga Cathedral
About a kilometer away from R.T. Boulevard is Zamboanga City’s Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Concepcion. Its curving modernist façade somehow reminds me of Le Corbusier’s Notre-Dame du Haut church. It replaced the old cathedral located near Rizal Park which was bombed during the Second World War.

AROUND ZAMBOANGA CITY
Here are some of the tourist spots around Zamboanga City that aren’t located in downtown or even the Pasonanca Park. Some of these are just a few minutes from the city center, while others are quite far and might require a full day visit.
Rainbow Mosque
The most colorful mosque you’ll probably ever see is located at Barangay Sta. Maria, a jeepney ride away from Zamboanga’s downtown area. Formally called Masjid Al-Islamia , it has since been dubbed as the Rainbow Mosque due to its ultra-colorful façade. But it wasn’t always like this, its rainbow hues were painted on its white walls after the Marawi Siege as a call for peace and unity.
ADDRESS: Tumaga Road (Veteran’s Extension), Brgy. Sta. Maria GPS MAP: 6.930399, 122.078478 Entrance Fee: Free OPENING HOURS: Daylight Hours
Yakan Village
Located about seven kilometers away from the city hall, off the west coast of Zamboanga City is a small colorful village populated by Yakans , a group of people who originated from Basilan during the seventies. And what colors their village are the textile weavings they do by hands. Traditionally, they weave semmek dresses for wearing, but now, they’ve included bags, table runners, blankets, and even shoes into their repertoire.
ADDRESS: Upper Calarian, Labuan-Limpapa Road GPS MAP: 6.910023, 122.061902 Entrance Fee: Free OPENING HOURS: 8:00AM to 8:00PM, Daily
Taluksangay Mosque
On the east coast of Zamboanga, about half an hour drive from downtown, lies one of the more important mosques in the city. The Taluksangay Mosque was built in 1885 and is the oldest mosque in Western Mindanao. It is where Islam first spread in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
ADDRESS: Brgy. Taluksangay GPS MAP: 6.9507456,122.1792455 Entrance Fee: Free OPENING HOURS: 8:00AM to 8:00PM, Daily
Merloquet Falls
On the border of Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay lies one of the grandest waterfalls in Zamboanga Peninsula. Merloquet Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, rising to a height of about fifteen meters with a width of ten to fifteen meters. It is quite far from downtown Zamboanga, but it’s an excellent destination if you have a free day to spare in the city.
ADDRESS: Brgy. Sibulao GPS MAP: 7.310163, 122.213463 Entrance Fee: ₱5.00 OPENING HOURS: Daylight Hours
SHOPPING IN ZAMBOANGA
Those who travel to shop won’t be disappointed with Zamboanga. The city has a good combination of modern malls and local and traditional shops. Be sure to get enough baggage allowance for your flights back.
Canelar Barter Trade
One of the best places to shop in Zamboanga City is at the Canelar Barter Trade. It’s a open-air dry market selling mostly Malaysian textiles, clothes, and food stuff. Be sure to bring home batik shirts, colorful scarves, unique instant noodles, egg udang noodles for making mee goreng at home, Malaysian white coffee, teh tahrik , and Apollo chocolates.
ADDRESS: Wee Siu Tuy St., Brgy. Camino Nueva, Canelar Trading Center GPS MAP: 6.913952, 122.074112 ENTRANCE FEE: Free OPENING HOURS: 8:00AM to 5:30PM, Daily
Plaza Pilar
Located right across Fort Pilar, Plaza Pilar is a small area surrounded by a colonnade selling souvenirs, local foodstuff, and religious items. Be sure to get a bunch of apa , a crispy wafer-like rolled treat, when you visit. It’s also a good place to have a photo of the Fort with a foreground of flying pigeons—as there are lots in the area.

Magay Zamboanga Public Market
Near the Zamboanga City Hall is the hustle and chaos of the Zamboanga Magay Public Market. If you like market places, this is the most massive this side of the city. It’s a good place to see and buy local wares, and the cheapest place for street food.

Pettit Barracks Night Market
As evening arrives, Rizal Street closes to vehicular traffic and stalls upon stalls of ukay ukay clothes start to line the road. This Zamboanga night market stretches for two blocks, with food stalls hawking local street food like mee goreng on the rear part, perfect for after-shopping snacks. It actually reminds me of Baguio’s Harrison Road Ukay Ukay .
ADDRESS: Rizal St., Downtown GPS MAP: 6.903054, 122.079123 ENTRANCE FEE: Free OPENING HOURS: Evening Hours, Daily
Shopping Malls
Zamboanga is a bustling city and most people from the neighboring islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi do their shopping here. And like all big cities, there are numerous shopping malls in the area—KCC Mall, SM City Mindpro, Southway Mall, South Supermall, Gaisano Grand Mall, CityMall Tetuan, to name a few.
OPENING HOURS: Most open at 9:00AM and closes at 7:00PM to 9:00PM
ZAMBOANGA STA. CRUZ ISLAND TOUR
One of the most popular tourist spot in the city is the Zamboanga Pink Beach —one of only a handful in the world. And this is located in Sta. Cruz Island, which is just some minutes by boat away from downtown Zamboanga.
• Subic Pink Sand Beach • Komodo Island Pink Beach
Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar
The first place tourists visit when going to Zamboanga’s Sta. Cruz Island is the sandbar that extends from Little Sta. Cruz Island. This is a small islet before the main island. Tourists are not allowed on the island, but they can go down on the sandbar if the tide is low and the sandbar is above water. Swimming is prohibited though, as the area has riptides which can sweep swimmers away.
Sta. Cruz Island Mangrove Lagoon
Before heading to the beach, a side-tour to the mangrove forest of Sta. Cruz Island is a worthy experience. You transfer to a smaller paddle boat, and ride around the mangroves where you can enjoy the scenery, have a taste of the freshest seagrapes or lato , and experience handling stingless jellyfishes.
One of the highlights of a Sta. Cruz tour is their vinta ride—those colorful boats you only see on textbooks. After the lagoon tour, a small vinta awaits visitors—one which you can actually paddle and ride around on.
Zamboanga Pink Beach
And finally, the main event of a Sta. Cruz Island tour, Zamboanga’s Pink Beach. The beach is actually not as pink as Barbie pink, but it only has a hint of pinkness when viewed on a certain angle, especially on the foreshore area where the sand is wet. This is due to crushed red corals that mix with the sand. Swimming and snorkeling is a good activity here, just be aware of the strong current.
Seafood Picnic Lunch
Depending on the tour you availed, it may or may not have a seafood lunch bundled with it. We booked ours with iTravel Tourist Lane and it does have an excellent seafood lunch on a cottage by the beach. Shrimp, crabs, roasted fish and squid, chicken barbecue, and fruits—it was one of the best meals I’ve had in Zamboanga.
Badjao Cemetery
Before going back to mainland Zamboanga, we dropped by the Badjao Cemetery in Sta. Cruz Island. The burial ground was used by the Badjao and Sama Bangingi tribes even before Sta. Cruz Island became famous as a tourist spot. The graves are small and are usually adorned with gravestones made of wood and small wooden boats—reflecting the Badjao’s seafaring way of life.
Scuba Diving at Sta. Cruz Island
Another activity that can be done in Sta. Cruz Island is scuba diving. The whole Sta. Cruz Island is actually surrounded by a reef wall, but diving isn’t allowed there due to very strong rip tides. The only approved diving site is located near the Little Sta. Cruz Island where there’s also a reef wall. As of the moment, there’s no dive operator or shop accredited by the LGU since the pandemic happened. I will update this once diving resumes in Sta. Cruz Island.
ONCE ISLAS ZAMBOANGA
One of the newest tourist spots in Zamboanga can be found in Barangay Panubigan, the Once Islas Island Hopping Tour . It is located about an hour away from downtown, but the travel time is very much worth it. I found the beaches here to be even better than at Sta. Cruz Island. While there are eleven islands in the vicinity, only three islands are open to tourist.
Bisaya Bisaya Island
The most adventure-filled island on the tour is Bisaya-Bisaya Island. It has a trail that circles around the half the island with beautiful rock formations, a natural tidal pool off one of its islets which you can reach by walking on a sandbar during low tide, and a pretty fine beach to boot too.
Sirommon Island
The island best for snorkeling is Sirumon Island. And there’s actually a raft that can take you to the best snorkeling spot. But if the tide’s too low, snorkeling a few meters from the shore is not that bad too. Plus, it has a sandbar too. The beach is also super fine.
Baung Baung Island
The final island on the list is Baung Baung Island. I like this island best for its waters, absolutely no current—a real pleasure to swim on. It also has a view deck that can be hiked up through 248 steps.
ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP
The food scene in Zamboanga City is really good. Point in fact, I gained weight after visiting the city. For a dedicated article for Zamboanga’s food scene. Check these out.
• Zamboanga Food Trip
• Mee Goreng Zamboanga
Moro Cuisine
Zamboanga’s culinary landscape is very different from most of the Philippines. Some of the best places to try these are at Andi’s Special Satti, Bay Tal Mal Restaurant, and Dennis Coffee Garden.
The city is famous for its curacha or spanner crab and there are several restaurants you can try to get the best out of it. A few of the famous ones are Alavar Seafood Restaurant (their Alavar sauce is a must) and Vista Del Mar Restaurant.
Malaysian Food
Being so close to Malaysia, their food has seeped in to the tables of Zamboangeños . We hunted for the best mee goreng and other Malay dishes this side of the Philippines and found them at Ole Ole Restaurant, Tinis Restaurant, and on makeshift stalls selling mee goreng along the streets.
Street Food
Zamboanga street food is also very unique. Be sure to try their local fishballs, coconut sugar-laden taho , crispy salvaro and apa , okoy, pastil , and experience having balut, beef chicharon , and mee goreng along the breakwater of R.T. Lim Boulevard.
Everything In Between
And if you want something less adventurous, Zamboanga City also has the usual fast food chains, plus restaurants serving traditional Filipino and Western fares—if you want Chinese, they have those too. We tried some of the best at Bar Code, Country Chicken Restaurant, and Hacienda De Palmeras Restaurant.
ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA FESTIVAL
The best time to visit Zamboanga City is during the month of October when they celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival . Here are some of the festival highlights.
Regatta De Zamboanga
This is the ultimate vinta boat race in Zamboanga City. Multitudes of vintas race across the waters fronting R.T. Lim Boulevard using only hand power or paddling.
The ultimate in shopping in Zamboanga City. ZAMPEX or the Zamboanga Peninsula Expo features the best of what the region offers—textiles, clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, furniture, and most importantly food products! This is usually held at a convention center, and the last one I attended was held at the Palacio del Sur , the event hall of Marcian Garden Hotel .
Asao Lechon Festival
Part of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the Asao Lechon Festival where lechoneros from all over Zamboanga City compete for the best lechon in the city, parading them, and letting everyone have a taste—for free! By the way, Asao is not a place but rather a chavacano term for grilled or roasted food.
Mascota De Zamboanga
The most beautiful terno gowns—inspired by opulent ladies during the Spanish era in Zamboanga City—competes for the annual Mascota De Zamboanga. Local artists sometimes take a year to create these masterpieces.
Zamboanga Hermosa Street Dance
The Zamboanga Hermosa Festival climaxes in a street dancing competition by various barangays in the city. The dancing spreads through the streets of the city before culminating at the Paseo Del Mar for their final performance.

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- The Philippine Experience Program (PEP), aimed at promoting the nation's cultural and natural attractions, had its latest regional launch in the province of Palawan on April 10.
House Speaker Martin Romuladez, in his message, praised Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco for her leadership in the PEP initiative. “As the caretaker of the third district of Palawan, I commend the Department of Tourism, under the leadership of Secretary Maria Christina Frasco, for this noteworthy initiative.
Palawan is the last ecological frontier in the country and it is precisely for this reason that Palawan remains to be the top of mind destination of many tourists visiting the country,” said in a message, delivered by his representative, Jose Fernando Escalante.
The event in Palawan was participated by over 70 individuals, including distinguished guests such as Thai Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Tull Traisorat.
PEP was first introduced in the Davao Region last year and has since made its mark across various regions including Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Zamboanga, and Ilocos.
Each launch focuses on tailoring experiences that highlight the unique characteristics and attractions of the respective regions, thereby boosting local economies and supporting sustainable tourism practices.
The event also included cultural performances and showcases from local artisans, providing a taste of Palawan's vibrant cultural scene. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA)
