7 things to see in Foligno, and discover one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria

Find out where to stay in Foligno at the best price

Umbria is the ideal place if you are in love with the Middle Ages and the delicious medieval villages. In this green Italian region, where the mountains alternate with the forests, there are some of the oldest cities of the country, considered to have been for several years among the most beautiful villages in Italy . Among the beautiful cities of Assisi, Perugia, Bevagna, Norcia, Spoleto, Gubbio just to name a few, surely you will have asked yourself at least once: but what is there to see in Foligno?

Well, I’ll tell you right now!

Foligno is one of the most characteristic villages of this beautiful region. Here the Middle Ages have really left indelible traces because, at every street corner, you can find the living testimonies of its rich past.

But there’s more!

If you want to visit Foligno you must know that, by tradition, this city is considered the “center of the world”.

Very simply Foligno is located in the center of the Italian peninsula, long considered the center of Europe, and therefore of the world.

In this post I will explain you many other things, I’ll tell you what to see in Foligno , but if you want to discover some of the most beautiful medieval towns in Umbria then you should also read my post on what to see in Bevagna .

Would you like to discover Foligno, the things to see, its history and its uniqueness?

Let’s go!

Index of topics

  • 1 – The cathedral of San Feliciano
  • 2 – Palazzo Trinci in Foligno
  • 3 – Piazza del grano

4 – Piazza San Domenico

  • 5 – Piazza Garibaldi
  • 6 – Giostra della Quintana
  • 7 – S.P.Q.F.

1 – The cathedral of Foligno, San Feliciano

The cathedral of Foligno is much older than it seems. The structure that you can observe now dates back to 1133 but rises on an older building, built between the 9th and 10th century AD

The building is absolutely unusual because, as you can see, it does not have a single façade but two.

The main façade dates back to the medieval reconstruction, but after a few decades, the cathedral of Foligno was equipped with a new transept and enlarged compared to the previous dimensions. Following this expansion, it was possible to build a second and more grandiose side façade which, still today, stands on Piazza della Repubblica.

I advise you to concentrate mainly on the side facade because this is where you will find the most interesting decorations. In addition to the beautiful Romanesque portal, on the façade, there are some classical-style bas-reliefs depicting Federico Barbarossa, bishop Anselmo and the symbols of the evangelists as well as the zodiacal ones.

But the history of the cathedral of Foligno does not end here.

In 1545, Cola di Caprarola did some new work inside the Cathedral and reduced the building to a single large nave, then completely decorated in neo-classical style in 1772-1819, designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and Giuseppe Piermarini.

In my opinion, the most beautiful part remains the ancient medieval structure. Because of these modernizations, in fact, the interior has totally lost its original charm. However, let me point out that inside the Cathedral of Foligno you will find a canopy by Andrea Calcioni, built in imitation of that of San Pietro del Bernini.

Do you want to know a curiosity about this building?

According to the documents of the time, the Cathedral of San Feliciano was built in the place where the saint was martyred in 251 AD. The legend tells us that Feliciano was the evangelizer of the city, and for this reason, he was first tortured and then attacked at a galloping chariot until his death.

One last thing!

Next to the Cathedral of Foligno is the Palazzo delle Canoniche. Today this structure houses the Diocesan Chapter Museum with some interesting works that were once kept inside the cathedral and in the neighboring diocese. Here is also the oldest part of the church, namely the Crypt of San Feliciano , which was recently restored and dates back to the 7th century.

I absolutely recommend you to visit it!

2 – Palazzo Trinci: between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

After observing the beautiful medieval facade of the Cathedral of Foligno you will surely notice that, on Piazza della Repubblica, there is also another important building. It is the famous Palazzo Trinci and it is another of the most important things to see in Foligno .

The entrance to Palazzo Trinci in Foligno is located right on Piazza della Repubblica, next to the town hall, and next to the secondary façade of the cathedral. It’s not difficult at all to see it because it is an architecture of the beginning of the fifteenth century in late Gothic style.

But why is Palazzo Trinci in Foligno so important?

It is soon said.

In addition to the beautiful architecture, Palazzo Trinci still retains its original late medieval pictorial decoration. The palace was in fact decorated by Gentile da Fabriano and the collections are divided between the archaeological area and the art gallery.

I assure you that the picture gallery is truly wonderful.

In the first part of the visit, you will find interesting archaeological objects from all over the Colfiorito area, such as tombstones with inscriptions in Umbrian and ancient votive statuettes.

On the first and second floor, there is instead the Pinacoteca di Palazzo Trinci, with marvelous frescoes detached from various churches in the area and kept here, in Foligno .

The thing I liked the most was discovering the history of the building: the museum is, in fact, very well set up and very detailed information sheets are available in each room. From the Roman Domus with mosaics to the connecting staircase between one building and another, from the frescoes of the “passetto” that connected the palace to the cathedral of Foligno , Palazzo Trinci is all to be discovered.

Have I not convinced you to visit Palazzo Trinci yet?

Then you should know that the liberal arts and planets hall will literally leave you speechless. Then there is a suspension bridge, the room of the giants and the chapel of Ottaviano Nelli with frescoes of stories of the Virgin dated to 1424.

I assure you that the beauty of the decorations of this palace will make you really fall in love

In short, among the things to see in Foligno you can’t miss the appointment with Palazzo Trinci.

I’m sure it will surprise you.

3 – Piazza del Grano in Foligno

After visiting the Piazza delle Repubblica you should explore the city in the direction of Piazza del Grano. In this place, in fact, there is a beautiful church in Gothic style, built-in 1402. It is the church of San Giacomo in Foligno and it is impossible to not recognize it because it is characterized by very showy white and red bands that decorate the lower part of the facade.

Not far away there is also a wonderful work by Perugino, Raphael’s master, who created a painting for the “Baptism of Jesus”, now kept in the Oratory of Nunziatella.

In Piazza San Domenico there is one of the oldest structures in the city of Foligno . This is the church of Santa Maria Infraportas, a splendid Romanesque church from 1138.

Here too, you will find the classic white and pink bands, added during the 19th-century restorations. At the top of the church there is instead a huge window, obtained with elements of reuse of a previous rose window but evidently disproportionate to the harmony of the facade.

Even the small portico is not original but was later built using some columns and capitals dating back to the 11th century.

And the interior?

Unfortunately, even in this case, the restorations have done much damage, depriving the church of its original charm. However, you will find beautiful medieval frescoes along the oldest walls.

What else to see in this square?

While you’re here, I also suggest you admire the church of San Domenico which dates back to the 13th century with a beautiful 14th century bell tower.

5 – Piazza Garibaldi in Foligno

I told you almost all the most important things to see in Foligno but I would like to finish with Piazza Garibaldi.

At the center of this square, there is the statue of the famous “General of the Thousand”, between the church of Sant’Agostino from the Colleggiata of San Salvatore. The latter is the most interesting of the two, with a very particular facade and rich in decorations.

The Colleggiata of San Salvatore in Foligno was originally an ancient Benedictine abbey, built between the tenth and twelfth centuries, and fortunately still retains much of its medieval charm.

I stayed in the center of this square for a while. The thing that struck me most was, above all, the perfect harmony between the oldest structures and modern buildings. I don’t know why, but this square gave me a deep sense of peace.

6 – The Giostra della Quintana in Foligno

Among the things to see in Foligno, I would also like to tell you about a beautiful event that every year attracts thousands of tourists from all over Italy. The city is, in fact, renowned for the famous “Giostra della Quintana”, a very suggestive historical re-enactment that recalls the medieval past of the city.

No, it is completely different from the famous Gaite market which takes place in Bevagna or with the “Palio di Siena”, but it is a very special event

What is it?

You know those ancient medieval rides, those in which the riders clashed on horseback with their long spears. That’s right, the Quintana carousel of Foligno will take you back in time and will make you rediscover these ancient medieval games.

7 – S.P.Q.F. : Foligno in Roman times

A very important thing that you will notice walking around Foligno is an inscription that you will find almost everywhere: it is the abbreviation S.P.Q.F.

Like the famous Roman SPQR, here the abbreviation is for “senatus populusque fulginei” or “the senate and the people of Foligno”. I found it very funny and it derives from the fact that Foligno was a “municipium” and then an independent town from ancient Rome until the Middle Ages.

Did you know that?

Are you planning to visit Foligno and you need some advice?

If you are looking for a hotel in Foligno , you want to book some activities or tickets, please write to me in the comments the budget you have available and the dates you are interested in.

Foligno travel guide: What to see and do in Foligno

Foligno is the third largest town in Umbria behind Perugia and Terni. It lies on the banks of the River Topino. Unlike so many of the towns in Umbria which are perched atop hills, Foligno, in contrast, was built on the region’s flat plains. It’s also much more modern than most of the neighbouring towns and villages. This is due to extensive bombing during the Second World War which sadly destroyed many of its buildings. More recently, it was also badly affected by the 1997 earthquake when the town’s Torre Communale dramatically collapsed.

However, all that being said, we think that Foligno is very much a town where holidaymakers can enjoy a slice of authentic Italian life. It may not have the character of history of some of the other towns in Umbria , but it’s still well worth a visit and is a great base from which to explore Umbria as a whole.

What to see and do in Foligno

A good starting point for any visit to Foligno is the beautiful Piazza de Repubblica. The square’s design is typical of the 12th and 13th centuries. It’s home to the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and the adjacent Palazzo Orfini . Incidentally, the renowned goldsmith and die engraver Emiliano Orfini is supposed to have opened one of Italy’s earliest printing shops here which in 1472 produced Dante’s Divine Comedy , the first book to ever be printed in the Italian language.

tourist trophy foligno

Other palaces in Foligno include the Palazzo Pretorio and the Palazzo Trinci . The latter is home to the Museo Archeologico and some incredible 15th century frescoes. It’s also home to the Pinoteca Comunale (public art gallery) and has a very interesting display dedicated to jousting and to Foligno’s most famous annual event – the Quintana.

Also in Foligno’s main square is the 12th century pink and white stone Cathedral of San Feliciano. The cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of Foligno – San Feliciano – who was buried here in 251 AD. Rather unusually, the Duomo boasts not just one but two facades, the other facing the adjacent Piazza Duomo. At the time of writing, the cathedral remains closed to visitors due to damage caused by the earthquake. But when it is possible to do so, head inside to marvel at the ornate canopy that covers the altar ( baldachin ) and which is a 17th century copy of the one found in St Peter’s in Rome.

Before leaving Foligno, we can also highly recommend taking a stroll in its charming park – the Parco dei Canape . Its trees provide some welcome shade from the sun if you’re visiting during the Summer months and it’s a popular place for families with children. Visit on a Tuesday or Saturday morning and you will also find a small market here.

If you have come by car, we also recommend that you take the time to visit the nearby Abbey of Sassovivo . This Benedictine monastery is situated just a few kilometres from Foligno in the direction of Camerino on the slopes of Monte Aguzzo.

tourist trophy foligno

The monastery is surrounded by defensive walls which are built around two cloisters. The 13th century cloister on the hill is the one for which the abbey is best known. This rectangular courtyard is surrounded by 128 colonnettes, topped with lily decorations and in turn supporting 58 arches.

Also not far from Foligno is Rasiglia , a small Medieval village 600 metres above sea level which is famous for its springs and canals. Watercourses cross its charming alleyways making it a truly unique place to visit just 20 minutes drive from Foligno itself.

Shopping in Foligno

A visit to Foligno is definitely an opportunity to enjoy a spot of shopping and to buy some souvenirs to take home with you. Umbria has a strong tradition of cashmere manufacturing and Foligno is at the heart of this industry. If you’re looking to find unbeatable value for money, then head to Badiali Cashmere factory outlet at Via Fiamenga 47 on the outskirts of the town, which sells cashmere and woollen clothing for a fraction of the normal prices.

For a more diverse selection of clothing, head to Marina B or Officina 34 Retroscena in the heart of Foligno. The former has a fantastic selection of linen dresses and trousers as well as beautiful scarves, antiques and collectables, ceramics and homeware.

For a new pair of shoes to go with your set of new clothes, head to Duemme Calzature in the centre of Foligno at Corso Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour 116. Mariangela has a great selection of shoes and bags for both men and women from some of Italy’s most famous designers including Prada and Dolce and Gabbana.

Art lovers amongst you should instead head to the shop of  Francesca Greco , a talented artist. It’s the perfect place to find a truly unique memento of your time in Umbria, whether that be one of her paintings, books, T shirts, key rings or wooden boxes. Or make an appointment to view the paintings of local artist Luigi Frappi . He is a famous Italian painter and one of the founders of the Nuova Materia Italiana movement of the 1980s and then the Revivalism movement. He creates incredible landscape and still life paintings.

Events in Foligno

Foligno also boasts an action packed calendar of events for holidaymakers to enjoy throughout the year.

The first event in the calendar year is the Carnevale dei Ragazzi held during the last three Sundays before Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. On each of these weekends, elaborately decorated floats will parade through the streets of Foligno.

However, the most famous of the events in Foligno is, without doubt, the  Giostra della Quintana . This tournament takes place semi annually on a Saturday night in June with a counter challenge taking place on the second or third Sunday in September. On both occasions, knights on horseback compete through jousting tournaments during which horsemen from each of the ten city wards compete to spear their lances through an ever decreasing ring. Events are preceded by parades where local residents dress in full Medieval attire and are followed by much celebrating.

The town also holds an annual jazz festival in June – Young Jazz – as well as a celebration of one of Italy’s most famous foodstuffs – pasta – each Autumn. Aptly named the ‘ First Courses of Italy ’ each September and October top chefs, food critics and manufacturers from all over Italy converge on the city to celebrate Italy’s most famous foodstuff – pasta!

Restaurants in Foligno

Foligno boasts some excellent places to eat. Some of our favourites include:

Umami : Popular with youngsters, Umami is a great place for a quick bite to eat, serving up a selection of panini along with a host of delicious sweet treats.

Cucinaa : Open daily from 8 am to 9 pm (but closed on Sunday evenings), Cucinaa is a cross between an upmarket food shop and restaurant. It’s situated just outside but within walking distance of the main historic centre of Foligno. Wedged in a parade of shops, it doesn’t look anything special, but we love the concept behind it. This concept was actually the brainchild of three prestigious Italian masterchefs and is a simple one – it’s basically a luxury takeaway. It’s a great option for both breakfast and lunch and, if you don’t fancy cooking in the evening, then you can buy something to enjoy back at your  Umbria villa rental .

Pescheria Mariani : A typically Italian fish restaurant in Foligno.

Villa Roncalli : Owned by the incredibly talented chef, Luisa, this restaurant is situated in the hotel of the same name. Luisa uses the wonderful produce grown in her vegetable garden to create a host of exquisite culinary dishes.

For restaurant options in the towns and villages surrounding Foligno, check out our Umbria restaurants guide .

Where to stay in Foligno

This 2 bedroom  apartment in Foligno  is just outside the town and offers the best of both worlds – a quiet rural base but just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Foligno.

Spello is just a 10 minute drive from Foligno and is another great base from which to explore Foligno and all that it has to offer. La Casetta is a stunning two bedroom villa in Spello with an enchanting garden and stunning views over the rolling hills of Umbria. Electric bikes are available to hire just a short stroll away and from here, it’s an easy cycle to the historic heart of Foligno.

How to get to Foligno

By air: The nearest airport is in Perugia, less than 30 km away. Otherwise, it’s approximately 190 km to either Rome or Florence airports.

By train: There is a railway station in Foligno at the Piazzale Unità d’Italia on the eastern perimeter of the town. It is situated approximately 5 minutes walk from the historic centre.

By bus: The nearest bus station to Foligno is a 4 minute walk from the town’s historic centre.

By car: Much of the historic centre of Foligno is a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL). Cars that enter this area during operational hours without a permit will receive a hefty fine. There are a number of car parks outside this area but probably the easiest to navigate to is the large one at the train station. From here, it’s an easy walk to the historic centre of Foligno.

What to see and what to do in Foligno

tourist trophy foligno

At the heart of the Umbrian valley and crossed by the Topino River, Foligno has always been, since its origins, an important communication hub from which all the towns and villages of the region and even the capital Rome could be reached.

Due to its favorable position and the richness of the surrounding environment, the city has long been a destination for pilgrims, artists and artisans who have transformed the ancient village into what is now the third largest Umbrian city after Perugia and Terni.

Bombardments in the Second World War and numerous earthquakes have profoundly altered its exterior appearance, and today Foligno presents mostly modern forms; but the numerous religious buildings that embellish the streets of the center will enthuse you by the variety of still preserved shapes and styles. The traditional medieval “ovata” shape (very narrow streets, tall stone buildings and towers) is today the historical heart of a very large city, which has spread to the suburbs, but which has retained all the naturalness and purity of its ancient spirit. How can one not lose oneself in the magic of the past when the famous Giostra della Quintana (a jousting festival in period costumes) is held? Or how could you not feel privileged to still be able to see the fifteenth-century religious painting Polittico by dell’Alunno , whose charm not even Napoleon was able to resist? And still, how could one remain indifferent to the pride of a city that for the first time, with a far-sightedness out of the ordinary, made the first printing of what would become the mother of Italian literature – Dante’s “Divine Comedy”?

All this and much more is Foligno, the only flat city in the region that is easily visited even by less athletic tourists and which, together with the remains of the past, also offers emotions of modernity with the exhibitions at the CIAC (Italian Center of Contemporary Art) and the timeless delicacies of oils, wines and local products.

Foligno, Italy: highlights and places to visit in Foligno

Photo of Foligno

Visit Foligno

The substantial town of Foligno is found in the Umbria region of central Italy, south-east of Perugia and north of Trevi . The town contains a good number of interesting monuments and artworks.

Explore Foligno

During the two centuries from 1200 there was a major amount of building development in the city, especially with the construction of a fortified wall. Start your visit in the Republic Square in Foligno, which includes many of the most important buildings of the city including the Cathedral.

Foligno Cathedral

Completely rebuilt by Bishop Marco in 1133, Foligno cathedral was then later remodelled several times until it assumed a neoclassical style with Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-1773) and Giuseppe Piermarini (1734-1808).

The two façades are of Romanesque style, the main one with a loggia surmounted by a large rose window, while the secondary, built in 1201, is more decorated - indeed, given the amount of decoration this could perhaps be considered the main facade. The oldest parts are situated at the bottom, where the portal opens, with five arches with bas-reliefs.

Also of great importance are a 14th century crucifix, sculpted by Nicolò di Liberatore (1433 c.1502 and called the Alunno) and the Sacrament Chapel, added in the 16th century to a plan by Antonio Sangallo the Younger (1484-1546).

Cloister of Sassovivo

Around 1229 the Cloister of Sassovivo was also erected, by Abbot Angelo, who entrusted the work to a "Master Peter", who worked with great skill, as can be seen from the structure of the cloister.

The cloister is made from more than 100 marble columns, some twisted and others spiral, holding up small marble arches above which is a classical style frame decorated with mosaics and colored marble - a masterpiece of "Roman Art".

Other monuments

In 1232, at the behest of Pope Gregory IX (1170-1241), the Church and Monastery of San Claudio were also erected here, although little of these buildings now remains. In 1251 the Church of San Salvatore was built, followed by the belltower in the 14th century.

On the opposite side of the square you can see the Town Hall, which was built in the 13th century but now has a neoclassical façade added during the early 19th century.

Note also the Palace of the Trinci , a family who ruled until 1439. This Palace was completed in 1407 and is a work of art of great importance, especially for the frescoes that once decorated it, although some of them are now lost. Outside, the Gothic courtyard is also notable with its loggias and a staircase with three flights covered by cross vaults. The building now houses the Civic Art Gallery.

Foligno Art gallery and Renaissance art

The collections of the Foligno Art Gallery include various frescoes, altarpieces and paintings, mostly by local masters such as Nicolò di Liberatore, called the 'Alunno' [1430-1502] (you can see a statue of Alunno towards Porta Romana); Pierantonio Mezzastris (active between 1507 and 1533); and Dono Doni (1500-1575).

The 'Alunno' only painted frescoes and has left many works portraying tormented characters. Vasari wrote: [...] The best painting that Niccolò made was in a chapel in the cathedral...a "Pieta and two Angels", who...are crying so much that I believe any other painter, however excellent, could have done little better [...]"

There are also some works by Bartolomeo di Tommaso da Foligno (1425-1454) and a painter born in Foligno, rediscovered recently and Giovanni di Corraduccio,  called the “Mazzaforte” (active between 1407 and 1417), who also seems to be the author of some of the frescoes in the Trinci Palace.

Continuing through Foligno along Via Garibaldi there is the Church of San Salvatore (with a 14th century façade), and an interior renovated by Vanvitelli.

On the right altar there is the "Baptism of Jesus", a fresco by Perugino (1450 c.1523).

Along the Via Mazzini you arrive at Piazza San Domenico which contains one of the oldest religious buildings in Foligno, the 11th century Church of Santa Maria ‘Infraportas’ .

The church exterior has an imposing bell tower, while the interior has three naves, decorated mostly by local painters and still has some rare Byzantine style frescoes.

Emiliano Orfini

Foligno has a very long tradition in the arts using jewellery, pottery and iron. Among them, Emiliano Orfini (c.1420 c.1494) was “ Vir acutissimi ingenii ” (a man of a very subtle brain) according to Francesco Patrizi [1529-1597]. He was a jeweller who, among other things, was also a fine intellectual and brought the art of the press to the town around 1470.

Other Foligno activities

For art and nature lovers Foligno has many other pleasant surprises, for example the famous Parco del Canapè which is a very old park dating from the 18th century.

Outside the city walls the area offers various cultural attractions, such as some excavations which recently brought to light new finds from ancient Foligno. Don't miss the chance to also appreciate some of the local products such as truffles and mushrooms.

You will also find a fine selection of wines such as the red “Rosso di Montefalco” and the white Umbrian "Grechetto".

Like it. 2.7K Views. Foligno is the third largest town in Umbria behind Perugia and Terni. It lies on the banks of the River Topino. Unlike so many of the towns in Umbria which are perched atop hills, Foligno, in contrast, was built on the region's flat plains. It's also much more modern than most of the neighbouring towns and villages.
