What do you like to do when you travel? Do you prefer taking in the history and culture of a foreign land, or checking out the nightlife? Maybe you choose to spend the day relaxing in the spa, or hiking and taking in the beauty of nature.

Whichever activity floats your boat, you can do it to your heart's content in Japan. The island nation has long been a sought-after tourist destination, seeing over 2.4 million international visitors in November 2023, according to the official Japan tourism website.

With tourism surpassing 2019 pre-pandemic levels, Japan has made it easier than ever for international visitors to reach the country. In 2023, an e-visa was introduced for tourism purposes. The new permit streamlines entry procedures for nationalities that require a visa to enter Japan.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

As of November 2022, UAE nationals no longer need an entry permit to Japan, but for the other residents in the Emirates who do need one, an e-visa is readily available for online application. If you are not sure if you need a visa to visit Japan, you can check the list of countries on the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Here are some facts about the e-visa, and how to apply online.

What is the Japan e-visa?

The e-visa is a new system introduced by the Japanese government to ease travel for tourism. It allows international visitors to submit their applications and documents online. The entire process from application and payment to issuance can be done online.

The reason for visit must be tourism only. The e-visa is not applicable for those travelling to visit relatives and friends or for business purposes.

Who can apply?

In 2023, Japan released a list of countries whose residents are allowed to apply for the e-visa for tourism. The nations are: Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, USA.

What is the duration for which the visa is issued?

The Japan short-term e-visa allows foreigners entry into the country for 90 days. It is a single-entry visa. It is valid for three months from the date of issuance.

How long does it take for the visa to be issued?

According to the official website of the Japanese embassy in Dubai, the e-visa can take around four weeks to be processed.

How much is the visa fee?

Single-entry visas cost most nationalities Dh80. For Indians, the cost is Dh20. There are some nationalities for whom the visa fee is exempted. This list can be found on the Japan embassy website.

What are the documents required?

You can check the exact documents required for your nationality on the Japan embassy websites. These are the general documents to gather:

  • Emirates ID
  • Itinerary with flight details
  • Personal bank statement from UAE bank last 3 months
  • Certificate of employment, with position and monthly salary
  • Stay and hotel information
  • Document to prove legal residency

How to apply?

- The first step is to check your documents on the Japan e-visa website.

- You will then be required to make a username and password.

- Click on new registration and fill out the application form. You will be required to fill out your personal details as well as travel information.

- Once you click submit, the status of your application will be 'Temporarily received'. The application will be examined and you may be asked to submit additional documents.

- The next step is the visa fee payment (if eligible). Once you have paid, you will receive a confirmation.

- You can download the Japan e-visa app and log in to receive your e-visa. This can be shown to the immigration officer or other officials as your visa to Japan.

UAE residents planning to travel to Japan no longer need to visit the Japanese embassy to apply for a visa. The Asian destination has introduced eVisas for UAE residents, as well as for Saudi residents and nationals.

Effective immediately, Japan has eased visa regulations for travellers from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Tourists keen on exploring Tokyo’s neon streets, Kyoto 's temples and shrines, or the snow-covered slopes of Hokkaido can apply online for a short-term tourist visa that allows stays of up to 90 days.

No screenshots or print outs of the visa are required. Instead, travellers will access Japan's eVisa website on arrival in the country to show approved documents to immigration authorities.

The easing of travel rules for visitors from the Gulf region follows visa-free regulations for Emirati travellers that have been in place since November.

Citizens from 68 other nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and several countries across Europe, are also exempt from applying for a visa to travel to Japan.

“I am delighted with the commencement of the online applications for short-term stay visas in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the visa waiver arrangements for short — term stay for Qatari nationals, as it will ease the process to visit Japan for touristic purposes,” said Kobayashi Daisuke, executive director of Japan National Tourism Organisation in Dubai.

Earlier this month, Emirates resumed flights to Tokyo-Haneda airport, the Dubai airline's third destination in the country. The service joins Emirates' daily A380 flights to Tokyo-Narita and daily Boeing 777 fights to Osaka. at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short -term visits over a period of three years.

Qatari nationals are also able to travel easier to Japan as authorities have added a visa waiver registration for travellers from the Gulf country. Before travelling, Qatari nationals should register their passport details at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short term visits over a period of three years.

Japan is also set to drop its last remaining Covid-19 regulations for travellers.

From May 8, visitors from overseas will no longer need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test when arriving in the country.

Japan introduced some of the toughest travel restrictions after the Covid-19 pandemic as the country effectively sealed off its borders to non-residents. Since the lifting of restrictions, airlines around the world have added more flights to Japan to satisfy traveller demand.

Visa-free travel between UAE and Japan starting November 1

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that UAE citizens who hold ordinary passports can travel to Japan without the need to obtain a prior visa.

Holders of UAE passports can stay in Japan for up to 30 days each visit for the purpose of tourism or work, starting from November 1, 2022, without the need to submit an application at the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi, apply for an exemption, or pay any fees.

The Ministry noted that entry requirements to Japan still apply, including ensuring passport validity of at least six months, providing a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken 72 hours before departure, or presenting a certificate proving that the traveler has taken three doses of vaccinations approved in Japan, which are Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, or Sinopharm.

His Excellency Khalid Abdullah Belhoul, Undersecretary at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, underscored that the decision to exempt UAE nationals from prior entry visas reflects the depth of cooperation between the UAE and Japan as the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. His Excellency noted that the agreement will enhance tourism and cultural exchange and support new opportunities in business, trade, and investment.

The agreement coincides with the launch of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UAE and Japan, signed by His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and His Excellency Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aims to strengthen relations between the two countries to serve common interests by encouraging additional diplomatic, economic, political, trade, and investment cooperation.

The UAE is Japan's tenth largest trading partner in the world and is home to more than 340 Japanese companies operating in various sectors.

Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for this type of visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

According to a Cabinet resolution passed in July 2018, children under the age of 18 years who are accompanying adults, can get a  free visa for their visit from 15 July to 15 September each year.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

It is important to check the authenticity of travel agents you are dealing with and refrain from paying or sending copies of your official documents until after you are 100 per cent sure the tour operator is genuine. You can seek the help of the  UAE embassy in your country  for verification.

A messenger from the company collected my documents and gave me a receipt of payment and I was informed my passport will be returned with the stamped visa on 29th Nov. I did not have to call or follow up with anyone at their end as I was pleasantly surprised to receive my visa stamped passport, a day earlier than promised. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Mr. Arif and Zabeel Star Travel & Tourism. I recommend it highly for anyone looking for quality and effective service. Thank you for your services.
