Scope and future of tourism management

travel and tourism management scope

Tourism is considered to be an important aspect of economic growth and the development of a nation. According to the  United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) , global tourism is expected to reach 1.6 billion (in terms of international arrivals) by the year 2020. Tourism management is generally considered a bright and potential employment sector as it offers a wide variety of career opportunities in both the private and public sector. This article covers the details of tourism management courses and the prospective job opportunities that it can offer you.

What are the different types of tourism?

Tourism is an evolving industry that provides tourists with various experiences that help promote the country, region, or whatever type of destination they are travelling to. There are many different kinds of tourism, and each one caters to a different set of interests. Here are the three main types of tourism:

Domestic Tourism: Domestic tourism refers to travel within your own country. It entails traveling to various regions, cities, or towns within the same country for business, pleasure, or other purposes. Domestic tourism is important for the growth of the tourism business in a country because it helps the economy and encourages other people enthusiastic about promoting local tourism.

Inbound Tourism: Inbound tourism refers to tourism by foreign visitors to a destination country. It involves international travel for pleasure, commerce, or other reasons. People who want to explore new cultures, experience various lifestyles, and visit historical and natural landmarks frequently engage in inbound tourism. Inbound tourism is essential to the growth of a country’s tourism industry because it contributes to the economy and helps promote the country as a travel destination.

Outbound Tourism: Outbound tourism refers to the practice of individuals traveling outside of their country of residence for tourism, business, or other purposes. Outbound tourism plays an essential role to the development of a country’s tourism industry because it adds significantly to the economy and promotes international travel.

Unique concentrations within Travel and Tourism Management: Food Tourism and Cultural Heritage Tourism

Travel and Tourism Management students can choose to specialize their studies in Food Tourism or Cultural & Heritage Tourism.

travel and tourism management scope

Cultural and Heritage Tourism Cultural and Heritage Tourism is a leading sector in Italy, fueled by its immense wealth of artistic, archaeological and architectural treasure, thanks to which it is ranked first in the world for the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites it contains. Students interested in specializing in this area of the travel and tourism industry may concentrate their degree studies in Cultural and Heritage Tourism.

Food Tourism Italy is (rightly) renowned around the world for its cuisine. An increased tourist interest in local food traditions and the farm-to-table movement have driven an explosion in the food tourism business. Italy is the world’s top producer of wine, a leading producer of fine olive oil, parmesan, and prosciutto, to name just a few products that make it such a heavyweight in the global food market. Students interested in working for organizations involved in the production or promotion of Italy’s unique food traditions can take a concentration in Food Tourism.

This Beach Was Named the World's Most Sustainable Beach

Feel good about your beach day.

The world’s sandy beaches are slowly disappearing. A 2020 study published in Nature Climate Change showed that a quarter of sandy beaches across the globe had already eroded at a rate of more than 1.6 feet per year. It makes protecting what we have left all the more important, and as a traveler, you can do so by choosing to visit the most sustainable places possible. Luckily, Tripadvisor made that a little easier by compiling its list of the Best of the Best Sustainable Beaches.

Each year, Tripadvisor compiles several lists as part of its Best of the Best awards, which it explained are only awarded to places that receive a “high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from the Tripadvisor community. Fewer than 1 percent of its listings make it to the list.

To compile its list of the Best of the Best sustainable beaches, Tripadvisor began by partnering with BeCause as its data partner, which collated data from the international Blue Flag program, a nonprofit that has awarded more than 4,200 beaches all over the world with its mark of excellence. It awards this by looking at four key factors: environmental management, environmental education, water quality, and safety.

Tripadvisor took that list of beaches and further narrowed the scope by looking at the reviews of its own listings added over 12 months, specifically collecting data on how many times 92 different sustainability-related terms and phrases were used in the reviews, including “environmentally friendly,” ”eco-tourism,” and “waste reduction.”

Next, it analyzed some 2,000 Tripadvisor reviews to see which spots had at minimum 20 reviews within the 12-month period and an average Tripadvisor review bubble rating of 4 or above.

After crunching all the numbers, Tripadvisor named Sandbanks Beach in the United Kingdom its number one pick.

“Sandbanks Beach is a family-friendly spot with soft, golden sand, clear water, and incredible views,” the rankings page shared about the beach, which has a 4.5 bubble rating out of nearly 1900 reviews. “It's a popular beach, but even during peak season, there's plenty of space. Try some water sports, go horseback riding, or bring your dog (it's pet-friendly with some seasonal restrictions) and take a walk on the shore. There are plenty of food options, from beachside cafes to nearby restaurants, plus parking's a breeze.”

It was followed by Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, India, in second, along with Saundersfoot Beach in Saundersfoot, United Kingdom; Corniche Beach in Abu Dhabi; and Galissas Beach on the island of Syros, Greece, rounding out the top five.
