11 Astonishing Facts About Captain Janeway’s Voyager Costume

Maurice Mitchell

Here are some surprising facts about Captain Kathryn Janeway’s hair and uniform you might not know. She was the captain of the Starfleet starship USS Voyager and was the lead character on the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Although there had been a few female captains shown in the series she was the first one to star in her own series.

It was a ground-breaking decision at the time and is still a landmark television event. But oddly, being a woman meant there were some bizarre, strange and unusual decisions made about her hair and uniform.

We’ve already talked about how other women of Star Trek have faced uphill battles about their costumes . Troi almost had four breasts . Seven of Nine almost passed out . T’Pol had to take out her belly button ring . But we decided to tackle how Janeway’s hair, height, and breasts led to hilarious decisions.

Here now are ten things you probably didn’t know about Kathryn Janeway’s costume.

1. The First Captain Hated Her Hair

star trek janeway uniform

Sometimes the first episode of the show is very different from when the series airs. Sometimes the cast ends up very different. That was true of Star Trek: The Original Series when the Enterprise was piloted by Captain Pike. When the pilot for Voyager was shot they hired Geneviève Bujold to play Captain Janeway.

The 52-year-old French-Canadian actress is best known for her Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning performance of Anne Boleyn in the 1969 film Anne of the Thousand Days . In 1994 she was cast as Elizabeth Janeway. Geneviève Bujold began filming on 8 September 1994, but according to Entertainment Weekly , she quit three days later.

Reports said she hadn’t done a lot of television before and wasn’t used to the grueling schedule. According to studio sources, she wasn’t ready for 18-hour days of a weekly series like Star Trek .

“The joke on the set was there are no (shooting schedules),” says one source. “You just never go home.”

“When you’re coming from a film schedule,” said Leonard Nimoy , who played Spock in the original series, “18-hour days are not comfortable. It’s the kind of thing people desperately in search of a career will do.”

Sources on the Voyager set claim Bujold was acting as “like a diva”. She complained about restyling her hair and was uncomfortable with the makeup (Bujold’s spokeswoman denies this). “People were giving her s — – about it,” says an insider. “Add that to all the hours and she just said ‘God, let me out of this.'” So she did.

2. Janeway’s Hair Forced Reshoots

On September 19, Kate Mulgrew began filming her scenes for Voyager . Everyone was excited and enjoyed the new atmosphere. After several days of shooting, they went to edit the episode and realized the horrible truth. They couldn’t use any of the footage.

Mulgrew wore her natural hair down and swept back. To their surprise, the producers noticed that the stage lighting made her fine hair almost see-through. That meant all of the scenes she filmed had to be shot again.

The hair and make-up department scrambled to come up with a solution and put her hair up in a bun. “When I joined [Voyager] at the eleventh hour, we had nothing but hair problems,” Mulgrew told TV Guide in 1995. “Short? Long? With a hairpiece? Without a hairpiece? All the concerns were about my hair—the hair being the trademark of the woman, right?”

Unfortunately, the damage was done.

3. Janeway’s Hair Cost a Fortune

“We got a call from Kerry [McCluggage] after, like, the first day of dailies saying he hated Kate’s hair,” remembered executive producer Rick Berman. Jeri Taylor added, “When she moved her head, you could sort of see through the hair. There wasn’t enough hair there (to create a solid mass). So we thought well, maybe this is not the hairdo and began doing other styles on her.”

After days of filming the studio realized their very expensive pilot was now going to be more expensive. The cost of the two-part episode “Caretaker” had already reached $23 million and the reshoots called for major expenses. That’s more than some of the theatrical movies.

First, there was the cost of shutting down production while they worked everything out. It took about a week. “As soon as we had hair situations worked out and uniform situations worked out, within a week we were shooting again,” Rick Berman later said.

Then, because she filmed some scenes on a soundstage at the Los Angeles Convention Center, they had to rebook the stage and would cost a fortune. Add to that the sets for the Ocampa “enclave” had already been taken down and needed to be rebuilt.

“We ended up having to reshoot half of her stuff,” Rick Berman later said. Michael Piller joked, “I can honestly say this is probably the only Star Trek pilot in which the hairdressing cost more than the special effects.”

4. Janeway Almost Wore A Padded Bra

Ever since  Star Trek: The Next Generation  the women on the shows often wore special bras to enhance their chest.  Marina Sirtis,  who played Deanna Troi, was the most open about it and praised them. She called them the “Industrial Strength Starfleet Brassiere”.

“Now, as you know, with a corset everything gets pushed up or down,” Sirtis said at a convention. “What was pushed down was kind of enclosed in the skirt and what was pushed up was enclosed in what I named ‘the Industrial Strength Starfleet Brassiere’, which was a wonder of modern engineering. I mean, I used to take it off at night and go ‘oh blimey, where did they go?’. In fact, we had guest stars – and I’m no Twiggy – who would come and see me in the morning as Marina and then they would see me two hours later as Troi, and they’d go to costume and go ‘I want that bra!'”

Many actresses loved the bra.  Penny Johnson Jerald,  who played Kasidy Yates, in  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  said they were the best part of the show for her. “I have to tell you,” Jerald told  Fandom . “One thing I loved about Star Trek? It’s no secret. I loved the uniforms. And the best part of the uniforms, ladies? It was the bra. I’m telling you, these bras were monster bras. You could have the worst-looking upper chest but, my darlings, when you put that uniform on, those babies stood up like a silver platter, and they were beautiful.”

Kate Mulgrew, who reportedly wears a size 38B bra was expected to continue the tradition. Things didn’t go according to plan. Reportedly she stormed into one of the producer’s offices, threw the padded bra on the desk and said “No! I’m not wearing this!”

When  Robert Picardo , who played the holographic Doctor on  Voyager  was asked by about the story he couldn’t confirm it but said “It sounds like something Kate would say. I certainly can’t corroborate the story. Kate is just wonderfully outspoken.”

She’s only one of only two female regulars from the “modern” Star Trek era to go without the “enhancement”.  Nana Visitor  who played Kira Nerys on  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  is the other.

5. Janeway Wore a Wig

Kate Mulgrew had a wide variety of hairstyles on the show. Some were long and some were short but all were classy. But it turns out she had a little help.

While trying to figure out what kind of hair Janeway should have they used a variety of wigs and hair extensions. “Towards the end that was half a wig and half mine, did you know that?” Mulgrew told fans at UK convention , “My own hair is much longer, much nicer, much prettier of course.  Why should Janeway wear that hair?  No, let’s order her a wig.”

Wigs aren’t uncommon on  Star Trek of course.  Grace Lee Whitney , who played Yeoman Janice Rand in the  Original Series  wore a spectacular beehive hairdo. She quipped to Starlog Magazine that “they nailed” to her head every morning.  Leonard Nimoy wore a wig to fashion his hair for Spock. Chekov wore a Beetles wig and  Jolene Blalock wore a wig  to play T’Pol. William Shatner was rumored to wear a wig to cover his bald spot.

“I never understood it,” Mulgrew added. “It drove me nuts. Every five minutes with the powder puff, the comb, and the brush all this before every scene they never stop touching me so in the end I just wanted to rip them off. I envy Patrick Stewart!!”

6. Janeway Had More Hairstyles Than Male Captains

Despite all the work to get her hair right in the pilot they continued to mess with her hair throughout the seven seasons. In fact, of all captains on Star Trek Captain Janeway had more hairstyles than any of them. According to an extensive study by Trek.fm Kate Mulgrew wore seven different hairstyles. From her natural hair to the “bun of steel”.

Contrast that with other captains. William Shatner had at least two if you count his hair on the original series and the more stylized one in the movies as the same. Patrick Stewart’s Picard only had one and that’s his original hair. Avery Brooks’ Benjamin Sisko had two: his regular hair and bald.  Scott Bakula’s Jonathan Archer had two if you count his combover as separate.  Jason Isaacs plays Captain Gabriel Lorca and, while it’s only in the second season, appears to only have one hairstyle.

7. Janeway Hated Her Shoes

Kate Mulgrew looks short on the show but she’s average height. Women raised in the United States have an average height is currently 5 feet 4 inches (162.56cm). Mulgrew is a respectable 5′ 5″. Most of the male cast are between five foot ten inches (ex. Garret Wang) to six feet (ex. Robert Beltran). So Janeway wore four-inch heels so the cast didn’t tower over her. That doesn’t mean they had to be uncomfortable.

At a convention, a fan asked her what was the hardest part of working on Voyager . “Most difficult?” she said thoughtfully. “Probably the first two, ‘Caretaker.’ Indoctrination, tough. That bloody thing with my hair. Endlessly stupid hijinks with my hair! Not only my hair. My hair, my breasts, my feet, my waist. There was a woman in the captain’s chair and they didn’t know what to do. So it was all physicalized. How many times did they change my hairdo in the first six months? Ten? Who has a hairdo like that [mimics high hair bun] in outer space? I used to touch the nub for good luck.

“I finally said to them at the end of the first season. Take this [mocks removing corset] thing they had in here. Take that. Take bobby pins. Take the boots off. Give me some shoes I can walk in and let me be Janeway. I can’t be Captain Picard.

“Of course, I know it was a numbers game and their demographic was men from 20 to 35. I get all of that. But men are not stupid. The last thing they want is a false captain, an impersonator. They want the real deal. So once they let me be me, the men came on board as they are wont to do.”

8. Captain Janeway’s Costume is the First Cosplay in Space

star trek janeway uniform

Kate Mulgrew’s role as the first female Star Trek captain and a prominent scientist has inspired countless girls and women. One of those is a European astronaut and Star Trek fan Samantha Cristoforetti. She’s an Italian European Space Agency astronaut, Italian Air Force pilot and engineer. Cristoforetti currently holds the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight of a European astronaut. She held the record for the longest single space flight by a woman until Peggy Whitson broke the record.

Cristoforetti was onboard the International Space Station when the Dragon capsule brought supplies including an espresso machine. She posted a picture of herself wearing a costume styled after Captain Janeway with her hair in a bun. Cristoforetti motions to the craft and wrote “‘There’s coffee in that nebula’… ehm, I mean… in that #Dragon” which is a reference to Janeway’s love of coffee.

Her love of Star Trek is well-known after posting a Vulcan solute shortly after the passing of Leonard Nimoy. She added “‘Of all the souls I have encountered…his was the most human,'” quoting a line from the movie “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

9. The Costume Department Begged Mulgrew Not to Lose Weight

While Mulgrew is average height, she is below average in size. In the episode of Star Trek: Voyager called “Bride of Chaotica!” the show says that she wears a size four. Plunkett Research estimates that 68 percent of American women wear a size 14 or above.

Some costume designers struggle with actors gaining weight, but for Voyager it was the opposite.

“We have to beg Kate Mulgrew not to lose weight,” Costume designer Robert Blackman told Star Trek Monthly, “because she is very energetic and burns up the calories like there’s no tomorrow. So to keep her at a US size 3 or 4 is very difficult sometimes.”

10. Janeway Wore the Admiral Uniform in Record Time

After Voyager went off the air Janeway was seen again. In Star Trek: Nemesis she orders Captain Picard to Romulus to meet the new praetor Shinzon. Janeway is wearing the uniform (and three pips) of a Vice Admiral. That’s strange.

We know Kathryn Janeway returned to Earth in 2378. Star Trek: Nemesis takes place in 2379. That means she was promoted from Captain to Vice Admiral in a little more than a year.

If we follow the U.S. Naval rank designation (which doesn’t track exactly to the Federation) she would have been promoted from Captain to one-star Rear Admiral (lower half), two-star Rear Admiral, then to Vice Admiral. Vice Admiral is a three-star flag officer in the U.S. Navy and closely corresponds to the rank of Lieutenant General in the other Armed Services. Usually, the rank of Vice Admiral is temporary and usually used in times of war. Either way, it usually takes a Naval officer ten or more years to become a Rear Admiral much less a Vice Admiral.

Janeway was instrumental in defeating a Borg plague that swept Earth after Voyager’s return. So either she got back and went through the ranks of Admiral to Vice Admiral in a year or was given the rank thanks to her services to the Federation in the Delta Quadrant.

It’s good to know she doesn’t have to worry about those shoes in her new desk job.

11. Janeway Wears Red Even Though She’s A Scientist

star trek janeway uniform

Ever since the early days of Star Trek the role of the person on the ship is shown by the color they wore. This was true even in Star Trek: Voyager . But the show played kind of loose with the idea.

The uniforms Standard Duty Uniform style was introduced in 2369. That’s almost two years before Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Since they were separated from Starfleet they stuck with the uniform colors.

There are three division colors used on the uniforms: Red/Maroon shows they’re part of the COMMAND division. Yellow/Gold shows they’re in the OPERATIONS division. Blue/Teal shows they’re part of the SCIENCES division.

Janeway played the role of the science officer thanks to her background in science and was the science officer of the USS Billings before serving as captain of the USS Voyager.  But if she spent so much time on the science of the ship why did she wear red?

Most of the crew played dual roles on the ship. It was originally a military ship and had a small crew. While she was a science officer, she mainly answered as the ship’s captain. So she wore red.

From padded bras to silly wigs those are some things you might not have known about Captain Janeway’s costume.

Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

A new star trek show debut means new star trek fashion—so it's time to do some ranking..

Left to right: Starfleet uniforms from "The Cage" pilot, Lower Decks, The Next Generation, Star Trek 2009, and Star Trek: Picard.

The arrival of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is giving us our latest imagining of the iconic original series uniform —but Star Trek is home to so many wonderful uniforms that it’s time to go where no runway has gone before, and shine a light on which ones make the cut... and which ones are best used as phaser-fodder.

18) The Motion Picture

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Now, just because these are at the bottom of the list doesn’t mean they’re actually bad —they’re just a really, really bizarre change from the wonderful technicolors of the original show. The designs themselves are actually quite interesting, they’re just let down by the flat colors across the board—everyone just looks a bit samey, whether in the beige or the grey.

17) Enterprise (Discovery)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

When Discovery first introduced a riff on the classic Trek uniform, it was actually pretty solid—a fun blend between the colored division jackets of TOS with the jumpsuit design Discovery had already introduced as its Starfleet standard, along with the smart idea of it existing as a uniform for flagship vessels like the Enterprise . It’s mostly that time hasn’t been kind to this look, especially since Strange New Worlds has come along and done a much, much better interpretation of that classic uniform. Plus, those jacket collars just look very weird.

16) Enterprise

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

A huge change from what had come before it, but one that made sense for Enterprise ’s prequel setting. The blend of modern astronaut jumpsuit vibes with the subtle, but notable use of Star Trek division colors to line the shoulders is actually quite clever. It might be very different to what we expect from Trek usually, but it works.

15) Kelvin Timeline (Pre-Split)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Kind of like the Motion Picture jumpsuits, these trade the sort of color divides we usually expect from Trek for a more standardized look across the board. But the sea blue is definitely a better uniform look than TMP ’s sea of beige, and these at least shake it up by subtly differentiating the tone of color between the shirt and trouser portions of the design.

14) Discovery (Seasons 3 and 4)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

After jumping forward to the 31st Century, Discovery ’s uniforms under went a big change to something much more formal—gone were the blues and chrome metallic accents of the original jumpsuits, in exchange for colorful... space business suits? These definitely read more as a dress uniform variant than an actual standard uniform at times, but that’s not necessarily bad, and deciding to tweak the colors in s eason four instead of them being predominantly grey was the right choice.

13) The Cage

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Sure, they got a singular outing in Star Trek ’s original pilot, but these are great—space sweatshirts for all! It’s a shame there wasn’t as much color deviation in these as what we’d eventually get (and if anything, the standard beige color feels a little like what TMP would eventually draw on), but these actually look kind of comfy, to be honest.

12) The Wrath of Khan

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Speaking of standard uniforms that look more like dress variants though! They’re very fancy, but these are great—any complaint you might have about the loss of division variants is overridden by the big bold use of red, the cut of the jacket, it all works.

11) Kelvin Timeline (Post-Split)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

What if the classic TOS uniform, just a bit more modern? These are a great update to the iconic original—there’s something almost athleisure-y about the material of the original Star Trek 2009 design, with just enough modern texture but not enough that it distracts from the pure simplicity evocative of the original design. The minor update for Beyond with a higher-collared, more tailored overshirt isn’t quite as good, but they’re overall solid updates.

10) Prodigy (Training)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

The latest animated Trek show isn’t big on uniforms as it focuses on a motley crew of alien kids, but when it came time for them to suit up in the climax of the first half of season one , these swanky Starfleet cadet uniforms were a pretty good riff on Academy wear. No division colors, sure, but there’s just enough going on in the simple black/grey design, and the cut of the shoulder coloration is evocative of several prior Trek designs in a cool way.

9) Strange New Worlds

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

The third and most recent riff on the original Star Trek uniform on this list is just really, really good. Like the Kelvin movies version, this does a ton of tiny little details to give the uniforms a pop of contemporary texture while not distracting from the simple design—and the little division emblems woven into sections feels very in line with the design language established in Star Trek: Discovery . Combined with a nice, modernized riff on the original miniskirt for female officers, and this is just an all-round fabulous refresh.

8) Discovery (Seasons 1 and 2)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

These uniforms were pretty controversial at first, but for a Star Trek show that wanted to act as a transition between what we had seen from Enterprise visually to the “future” to come of the original Trek, these are a fantastic take on that more space-jumpsuit design. The blue is a lovely touch, and the metallic division coloration on the torso and upper trousers might not be the classic colors we all known and love, but it pops really well. And, once again, the devil is in the details: incredibly extra of Starfleet to make those color blocks out of teeny-tiny Starfleet deltas.

7) Prodigy (Admiral Janeway’s Crew)

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Sure we only got a tiny look at these at the very end of Prodigy ’s first batch of episodes, and they have a lot in common with the TNG -era dress uniforms, but as standard looks these work quite well—evocative of post- TOS design language and colo rs, smart but not overtly smart. Clearly Admiral Janeway runs a snazzy-looking ship.

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Speaking of Janeway, sure technically these are the first Deep Space Nine uniforms, and the Generations uniforms, but sue me: they’re the uniforms we see throughout Voyager , and DS9 would go on to pilfer its own iconic uniform look from the TNG movies. But anyway, these rule! It’s a great evolution of the TNG -era suits, bringing up the division colors off the chest and onto the shoulders, and there’s just a little extra pop of color with the lighter undershirt and it s higher collar.

5) The Next Generation

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Whether it’s the original S pandex jumpsuit or the eventual post-s eason three jacketed look, TNG ’s uniforms are iconic for a reason. We get the re-working of the division colors from TOS to put command in red and operations/engineering in gold, and the introduction of the uniform black to bring cohesion across the entire crew—but keeping enough division color to feel evocative of TOS —makes this feel like a super-smart update on Star Trek uniform design a century in the making.

4) The Original Series

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

You just can’t beat the originals sometimes (ignore the fact that they’re at number four ; basically every uniform here is good in its own way anyway). The bright color feels unlike anything you would’ve imagined at the time as the uniform for a starship, and yet TOS ’ legacy and influence is still being felt all these decades later.

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

Picard has actually technically had three different Starfleet uniforms—one seen briefly in flashback, one for the rest of season one , and then a third for season two’ s premiere—and they’re all mostly similar enough to not be worth breaking down individually. The s eason one suits, both flashback and present, are nice, modern takes on the design language of the Voyager uniforms, with the flas hback ones bringing more design to the shoulders, and the “present” suits bringing that design focus to the cut of the collar. Season two, meanwhile, briefly seen as it was, actually feels like a live-action riff on the next entry on this list, and very good for it...

2) Lower Decks

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

It might be controversial to put these suits so high considering Lower Decks , despite being really good, still has this sort of underdog reputation simply for being animated. But I don’t care, these are fabulous suits. The appearance of the  division color all over with the piping on the boots and up to the collar is a lovely touch, and the strip of white dividing the shoulder sections and the colo red body of the jackets is a lovely little pop. T hese feel like a really good step between the TNG and Voyager / DS9 era uniforms, even if they technically come after.

1) Deep Space Nine

Image for article titled Starfleet Uniforms, Ranked

As with the Voyager uniforms, yadda yadda yadda appeared elsewhere, yadda yadda yadda don’t care, yadda yadda yadda DS9 is the thing most associated with them. All that out of the way—these are very good uniforms.

The simple switch of bringing the division color to the undershirt and the gray onto the shoulders is a really smart touch that feels reflective of the darker period these uniforms were introduced in: there’s something just a little more militaristic about these uniforms as the Federation heads into conflict with the Dominion, but there is just enough of a pop of color that they feel like Star Trek uniforms still, a little bit of light in the dark. And it’s all done through one simple, minor change! Fantastic.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Producers On New Uniforms, Rebooted Janeway And Why Protostar Is Always Landing

[SPOILERS FOR PRODIGY 109]

The ninth episode of Star Trek: Prodigy, “A Moral Star, Part 1” is the penultimate episode for the first 10-episode arc and it featured some firsts for the show. And now the producers and cast are offering more insights into the episode.

Prodigy Stardate mystery

A big point of discussion for “A Moral Star, Part1” was the Prodigy crew donning newly designed Starfleet uniforms for the first time. Speaking to Inverse , executive producers Dan and Kevin Hageman explained their approach for the new look:

Since the USS Protostar is an experimental starship, we felt it gave us some freedom to create our own uniform design, as long as it fit alongside the uniforms of this era. We, [executive producer] Ben Hibon, and our design team spent a lot of time discussing the badge and uniforms. We had to balance the style of our series, while also recognizing these kids aren’t actually anywhere close to being Starfleet Officers, which is why we went for a stripped-down design.

Writer discusses Corrupted Janeway, Dal’s tail, and more

Episode nine showed Holo Janeway getting rebooted as “Corrupted Janeway,” leaving one fan to ask on Twitter why there wasn’t some kind of safeguard preventing this, especially after lessons learned on the USS Voyager. Without giving anything away, Co-executive producer and writer Aaron J. Waltke noted that was an “excellent question” along with a wink emoji. So, maybe Corrupted Janeway isn’t as corrupted as one might think.

An excellent question… 😉 pic.twitter.com/8IA5BR1lw2 — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) January 28, 2022

One of the features of the USS Protostar is that it is built to regularly land, as seen again in episode nine. In response to a fan who took issue with this, Waltke explained this feature was due to the experimental nature of the USS Protostar, which he described a hybrid of a shuttle and a ship.

Just as Voyager was designed to do so on some occasions, the Protostar was designed to do so regularly as an experimental exploratory vessel alone in deep space! Think of it like a hybrid between a ship and a shuttle. — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) January 28, 2022

Episode nine also showed Dal using his head-tail thing to hold a tool. Waltke revealed they even have a name for it in the writers’ room, calling it a “prehensile skull pseudopod.”

In the room, I believe I called it his “prehensile skull pseudopod.” — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) January 28, 2022

“A Moral Star, Part 1” ends on a bit of a frustrating cliffhanger . Waltke heard those concerns and responded on Twitter, saying it was their way of teaching younger audiences what it was like watching the classic TNG episode “Best of Both Worlds, Part 1.” Although in this case, they only have to wait a week for part 2.

On behalf of the #StarTrekProdigy team, thank you everyone for the kind words about show. For those anxious to see how “A Moral Star, Part 1” ends, we felt an obligation to teach our younger audiences how #StarTrek fans felt after watching “Best of Both Worlds, Part 1”… pic.twitter.com/RhuoQ1sP4L — Aaron J. Mulgrew on the lesson of helping those in need

The weekly lesson from Kate Mulgrew for “A Moral Star, Part 1” focused on helping those in need, just as the crew did in deciding to return to Tars Lamora.

Shouldn’t at the very least PRO and LDS be using the com badge introduced in Generations? PIC showed it lasting later in the timeline. Doesn’t seem like there’s much in-universe consistency these days.

That is an unbelievably petty nitpick and I’m laughing at you for it

THAT is petty? Of all the foolishness uttered on these boards, THAT is petty? I thought it was a good question, actually.

What a ridiculous reply, Joe. It says far more about YOU than it does about eatrains. Grow up.

Wow, seriously? When was the last time you saw a change in any real life badges?

Um, you DO follow the comments on this thread? Half the fun is posting and reflecting on such questions (and it’s a valid question).

Different combadges coexist at the same time, just like different uniforms do. That was a trend started in TOS with different ship insignias, then in TNG with the silver provisional combadge Wesley wore alongside Picard, then in DS9 when we saw them change uniforms whenever they got onto the station and back into the old uniform when they went to Starfleet Command. Let alone all the many different combadges used alongside each other on DS9 that communicated perfectly with no issue.

The variety of uniforms (going all the way back to TOS) was something that Roddenberry said was inspired by his time in the Navy, where they had a new uniform for every occasion and different divisions.

TOS was a different era when the badge reflected what ship or base you were on. By the TNG era everyone used the delta badge regardless where they served. Enterprise, DS9, Voyager, wherever.

Though that was then retconned because the 23rd century Discovery and other ships were also shown with the delta badge. I think it’s fair to say that sometimes it’s just worth accepting the producers make changes for do logical in-universe reason.

That’s true. but it never should have been. It was lazy on behalf of the DIS team. Both Enterprise and Discovery should have known better. Don’t mess with canon because you are to lazy to think of a way out of it

Not really. https://intl.startrek.com/article/starfleet-insignia-explained

I think its fine, we already have different uniforms between the different shows in the same period, but I know it has bothered others. But the ship could just be from the future and came from a post-Picard time period. That or the show just takes place in a different time period altogether. ;)

But my theory is it’s an early 25th century experimental ship and why both the badges and uniforms are different. The writers are just trying not to give it away.

LDS at least is very simplified in general.

I agree. I love these shows but I dunno why the badges need to change so much all the time

These uniforms are beautiful and the com badge is great. In contrast to the ugo new Disco uniforms and the oval com badge that you have to be super up close to see the delta shield design on it. I truly love this sow on so many levels. It was unexpected. But it’s a joy to watch and is maybe the most “Star Trek” show out there now in terms of values and good storytelling (and design!).

I swear Prodigy seems to get everything right. I wish the team behind Prodigy could do Discovery. I try so hard but I can’t get behind DIS. They do EVERYTHING wrong.

100% agreed. The Prodigy team really do get what makes Trek tick. Give them the whole franchise.

Prodigy team + Picard = WINNING

The Prodigy team certainly does seem to be firing on all cylinders. And you will not get an argument from me that the Star Trek Discovery team seems to do everything wrong. That said I’m not sure I’m ready to hand them the keys to the kingdom. Being in charge of their own little corner is working great. I’d rather better people just get hired to run the other shows.

Maybe not the whole kingdom just yet. But Discovery gets thing sooooo wrong that practically anyone could do better. I mean the 32nd century stuff is trash. Like, I weep every time I think about how hard Kirk and Picard fought for the federation for 100’s of years just too see it wiped away by a crying baby with mommy issues.

OK, so Dal’s prehensile rat tail is an implant, right? It has a square base mounted to his skull. Odd place to put one, or even to evolve one. But, whatevs.

I seriously think this is the best of the four series currently airing. (Lower Decks is fun, but silly. The others… are simply dreary and chasing unfocused Early 21st Century goals.) I only hope Strange New Worlds continues the sense of wonder and quality of storytelling.

I love the uniforms, but I hope the kids customize them a bit for their own look.

I also would like to know more about the Protostar’s layout, decks, size, etc. I did a little digging on there’s not much info out there.

Like others, I really love those uniforms! But the boys on Trekyards are not as pleased. They don’t like them much at all which surprised me. But I love them and keeps completely in the style of this period. I’m going to miss Janeway wearing her old iconic uniform but it does make her feel like part of the crew if they are all wearing the same one.

And I’m glad someone asked about how Janeway could be so easily corrupted. I remember they made clear on Voyager that couldn’t be done so easily after giving the Doctor new safeguards. I assume there would be a real answer and it looks like there is.

And it’s also a great example just how much these writers have done their homework on this stuff. They have well thought out answers on everything that aligns with all the shows, especially from Voyager. I give them credit for really keeping all the canon in tact and truly feels like an extension of the 24th century shows. Yes, there are still a ton of questions like why so many alpha quadrant species are in the delta quadrant, but I’m more than confident the show is going to answer all of those in time. It’s just all part of the bigger mystery.

I have to say, I been praising Lower Decks for both its seasons, but I didn’t really expect to like another show as that one so quickly and even like another show more than that one. But here we are! All a win-win with the animated shows!

It’s a good question. The diviner and the like don’t seem nearly as technically as advanced as the Federation if they need the Protostar so badly. So how could he bypass Janeway’s safeguard’s so easily or even operate the ships systems so easily?

I guess no one was paying attention during the plan montage. That part when Janeway shows up behind Gwyn at the console and says “Wow, that is an upgrade!”… look closely at the panel.

Gwyn is upgrading Janeway’s holomatrix, there is an outline of her on the console. My guess is she’s putting in security to keep Janeway from being corrupted, so I assume Janeway is playing along to gain their trust and undermine them.

Yeah, most likely the case!

i really wish that Voy had updated the crew uniforms to the TNG movie look when the Dr came back from the alpha quadrant in ‘message in a bottle’.

and change the main titles images by s4 just as TNG, DS9 had done at half way through their run.

Yeah, I always wondered why they didn’t. I mean you could chalk it up to not wanting to use replicator energy or whatever but that’s just BS.

And I always wondered why the crew would be even remotely interested in doing that.

It would make them feel like they were a part of Starfleet again.

finally contacting starfleet means they are not alone anymore. and changing uniforms, maybe just for senior staff, would have help the crew feel better, morale.

In all honesty I never believed that the Janeway holo was “truly” corrupted. In fact, my fear was that the program itself would get purged. But I also figured the crew would expect that and placed the program in some kind of protected file or something. And if the program is indeed corrupted, I imagine this was another contingency that was considered and prepared for.

I’m not quite as much a fan of the ship landing as often as it does. But I just saw that as another link to Voyager. The fact that Voyager could land was also something I wasn’t a big fan of either. But such small things didn’t ruin the show for me at all. WoK has some holes but that doesn’t make the movie bad.

Gwyn was shown modifying Janeway’s holomatrix (look when she tells Gwyn “that is an upgrade!”), I think she put in security to keep her from being really corrupted.

Awesome work.

Posted by Joseph Beam on 28th Oct 2021

Very impressed with the quality of fabric, accuracy, and overall work. The finished piece has the weight and feel of an actual uniform (interior is lined as well). Would definitely order again.

Posted by Bailey on 14th Sep 2017

I was worried about ordering this. But I am so glad I did! It is so well done and is exact from the show. I have to get legs and arms taken up cause I'm 5"2 but I knew I would need to do so. Thank you fanplus! I am so excited!

Awesome Janeway Uniform

Posted by Angela on 25th Apr 2017

I recently ordered this to wear to a panel on Star Trek I was on at Silicon Valley Comic Con. It arrived quickly and was really well made. The jumpsuit is fully lined and made of nice material. It required a little hemming and taking in but once I did that it was amazing. (I'm short so I expected to have to hem the legs and arms a bit).

Excellent Quality

Posted by Tina on 18th May 2016

The costumed arrived quickly and I was pleased at how well made it was.

Love this costume!

Posted by Sarah on 17th Dec 2015

Wow. The uniform itself is damn near close to screen accurate. I've never seen this costume before that got the back and side pleating so right. The fabric quality is incredible and it drapes beautifully. I didn't expect this to be fully lined, it is beautiful and the quality is great. I custom ordered with my height in heels, and the legs are incredibly long, dragging on the ground. But that's the only thing wrong with this, and is easy for me to fix. Thank you Fanplusfriend! Please make more Star Trek costumes, I would order many more Star Trek costumes with the same high quality.

Posted by Hayleigh Stanistreet on 16th Jun 2015

Very happy with my purchase. It arrived before I'd expected and is a perfect fit! I would definitely buy from the site again and would recommend highly to anyone

All Starfleet Uniforms Ranked

😲 Comment below (without indignation, if possible), or post your personal list. Starfleet's uniform fashion has become extremely short-lived. In modern Trek, every series introduces a new style at least once in every season. Here is my personal ranking as of February 2022 (without admiral, cadet, dress and field uniforms). Similar styles are subsumed under a single list item.

star trek janeway uniform

14 Discovery seasons 1-2

star trek janeway uniform

The blue USS Discovery uniform (ca. 2239-2258) is my least favorite style by a wide margin, for several reasons. First off, it is a one-off style that shouldn't exist at all in the timeframe. Secondly, its aesthetics don't work. With the matching colors and patterns of the shirt and the pants it looks as if a jumpsuit was cut apart. The asymmetric collar is distracting. It is overdecorated with metallic stripes, consisting of small Starfleet arrowheads. Finally, it is very hard to tell apart departments because the three metal colors may look almost the same, depending on the lighting.

13 Discovery season 4

star trek janeway uniform

New season, new uniform. I appreciate the (unexplained) return of the classic colors in "Kobayashi Maru", but these were already included in a much more decent fashion in the extremely short-lived uniforms from the season 3 finale "That Hope is You, Part 2". I think Discovery should leave the colorful style to the series taking place in the past. And the uneven halves of the jacket, just as on the preceding uniform, still look awkward. The dress uniforms introduced in the same episode look so much better but are not the subject here.

12 Star Trek Enterprise

star trek janeway uniform

The uniforms of Earth Starfleet were seen in the 2140's and 2150's. While the higher-ranking officers such as Admiral Forrest wore pants and jackets, the starship crews could be seen with jumpsuits. I like how this establishes a visual distinction from the series taking place in later centuries. I can also understand that jumpsuits are more practical for the daily business on the ship. But the crew didn't seem to have anything more formal. Seriously, you don't welcome alien ambassadors wearing a jumpsuit!

11 USS Relativity

star trek janeway uniform

Here is a little-known uniform. It could be seen only in VOY: "Relativity" and was worn by the crew of the Relativity in the 29th century. It is a reasonable extrapolation of how a future style could look like, but not particularly innovative or otherwise interesting.

10 Discovery season 3

star trek janeway uniform

Many variations of 32rd century uniforms can be seen on Star Trek Discovery since the third season, all consisting of combinations of white and different shades of gray. The most consistent style is the one from "That Hope is You, Part 2", with added department colors for the crew of the Discovery. It looks modest, and is traditional without being too similar to the styles of previous centuries. Alas, while the ugly asymmetrical collar is gone for good, the new uniform jacket comes with uneven halves and looks like it is wrongly buttoned. The style is abandoned anyway, right at the beginning of season 4, in favor of something more colorful.

9 Strange New Worlds

star trek janeway uniform

No, not again! Strange New Worlds comes with yet another uncalled-for uniform variation for the mid-23rd century, one that is neither close to TOS nor to "The Cage". But it looks pleasantly unpretentious. While it includes an unnecessary Starfleet branding on the shoulders, I am glad they got rid of the Discovery-style asymmetric collar!

8 Star Trek: The Motion Picture

star trek janeway uniform

The uniforms seen in the first Star Trek feature film, set in 2271, have not aged well in my view. The cut just cries "1970's", and the colors are very pale. Yet, I sort of like the palette. The people in charge of "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan", on the other hand, were not fond of the style at all and created a radically new uniform with red jackets for the second movie.

7 Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan

star trek janeway uniform

This uniform first appeared in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" and could be seen in all following TOS movies, as well as on TNG. In-universe, it appeared from 2278 to about 2350, making it the by far longest-lived known style - although it is the most unusual one. I personally don't think the oversized lapel is very practical, and the style also has a too militaristic semblance. The uniform appears without the shirt collar and the belt in the last few decades (such as in TNG: "Tapestry"), and this looks like essential components are missing.

6 The Cage, TOS, Star Trek (2009) & DIS season 2

star trek janeway uniform

This group of uniforms comprises a number of similar styles, with the classic TOS uniforms (2268 to 2271) being the best-known and also my favorite example. I'm not so fond of the pale color palette from "The Cage" (2250's). The Kelvin version from "Star Trek (2009)" (2258) and "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2260) is acceptable as a homage to the original but is overdesigned with its arrowhead pattern branding. Finally, season 2 of Discovery adds a revisionist version that just does not look good with the asymmetric collar.

5 USS Franklin

star trek janeway uniform

This uniform could only be glimpsed in flashbacks and in personnel files of the USS Franklin (2164) in "Star Trek Beyond". I like the style because it looks much like the traditional Federation Starfleet uniforms but still has some elements from the Earth Starfleet jumpsuits (such as zippers and large ship patches).

4 TNG/DS9/VOY future, USS Kelvin & Beyond

star trek janeway uniform

I have combined uniforms from very different eras and universes in this list item, which all have in common the single-colored uniform shirt, without a black collar and without decorative elements (except perhaps for a thin stripe). The first example of such a clean style was first seen in TNG: "All Good Things" (2395) and then appeared in other alternate future scenarios of DS9 and Voyager. Similar shirts could be seen on the USS Kelvin in "Star Trek (2009)", set in 2233, albeit with department colors that were permuted for no good reason. Finally, single-colored shirts were also worn by the Enterprise crew in "Star Trek Beyond" (2263) and look arguably better than the previous imitation of the TOS style in this universe.

3 TNG S1, TNG S3, Lower Decks & Prodigy 2384

star trek janeway uniform

Here is another group of uniforms, consisting of styles in which the shirt is colored but with a black shoulder portion. In this group, the TNG uniform since season 3 (2366-2373) is my favorite because of its simplicity (and perhaps because I have watched TNG so often), ahead of TNG seasons 1-2 (ca. 2350-2365), Lower Decks (2380's) and Admiral Janeway's style in Prodigy (2384). But they all look great.

2 DS9/Voyager, PIC 2386, 2399 & 2401

star trek janeway uniform

When new uniforms were created for Deep Space Nine, these initially didn't replace the ones of TNG. The colors are the same, but were switched on the shirt. Additionally, there is now an undershirt. The style lasted from 2369 to 2373 (2378 on Voyager). Similar patterns can be seen on Star Trek Picard in the flashbacks (2386) and in the present (2399), with the latter looking a bit like a bad imitation of the DS9/VOY uniform. They were not popular, which may have been the real-world reason to change them yet again for season 2.

1 Star Trek: First Contact/DS9/LOW

star trek janeway uniform

The real-world reason for the creation of this dark and almost monochrome uniform for the Enterprise-E crew was that the movie "Star Trek: First Contact" wouldn't work so well with the colorful TNG or DS9 uniforms. The new style was subsequently adopted on DS9 and is connected with the Dominion War, but without appearing as too militaristic. I understand the motivation for its creation and I like the pattern and the subdued colors a lot. My favorite Starfleet uniform!

The USS Protostar style from PRO: "A Moral Star I/II" would deserve a top position (or it could be added to the entry for the "First Contact" uniform). As I mentioned above, uniform styles in modern Trek usually don't survive until the next season of a series, and please understand I do not intend to rework this article every couple of months.

Ranking Every STAR TREK Uniform, From The Original Series to STRANGE NEW WORLDS

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Starfleet has had several uniform designs in over 55 years of Star Trek . And we mean several . It’s wild how often Starfleet changes tailors. But while some uniforms have been fashion-forward, others… not so much. Here, we rank all the main Starfleet uniforms seen in the franchise thus far. We are skipping Alt-timeline uniforms , except for the J.J. Abrams Kelvin universe, since it made prominent appearances. And we skipped ones with very brief screen time, such as the U.S.S. Kelvin crew uniforms. So, let’s set phasers to stunning, and talk about some future fashion, ranking from best to worst.

1. Wrath of Khan through Generations (1982-1994)

Costume designer Robert Fletcher designed some of the worst Starfleet uniforms ever for 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Luckily, he got a “do-over” for The Wrath of Khan in 1982, and the subsequent five films . These uniforms are the crème de la crème of Trek wear. Yes, unlike most Starfleet uniforms on this list, they are only one color, maroon. But their design recalls 19th-century nautical uniforms, and so they just look so very regal. Officers must have loved these, because as TNG flashbacks showed us, they stayed in circulation for over fifty years.

2. The Next Generation , Seasons 3-7 (1989-1994)

These are the uniforms most think of when they think of TNG. After seasons one and two costumes were retired (we’ll get into why later), designer Robert Blackman came up with new yet similar uniforms for TNG year three . These had the same color designs as the earlier seasons, but were two-piece jackets and pants combos, and now with a more dignified collar instead of a V-neck. There is something about these that are just simple and classy, and there’s a reason they have remained iconic. Maybe it’s also because we always loved when Jean-Luc pulled down on his shirt in a huff.

3. Picard, Seasons 2-3 (2022-2023)

These first appeared in season two of Picard , and feature prominently in season three . Why do we love these so much? They take the color combo and general aesthetic of the Deep Space Nine/Voyager uniforms, but add the details and front “open flap” of the ‘80s movie uniforms. And it just all works. We kind of wish the black was on the shoulders instead, but hey, it’s ok. These new uniforms rock. Let’s keep them around.

4. First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis, Deep Space Nine Season 5-7 (1996-2002 )

Usually, we hate gray tones in Starfleet uniforms. But the uniforms introduced in the 1996 film First Contact really are very smooth. And the pop of color in the undershirts/collars keeps them from looking bland and lifeless. Much like the original maroon movie uniforms, these look the most “military” of all the Starfleet uniforms. This fits, as they introduced them in a war with the Borg , and later used them on DS9 when the Federation was at war with the Dominion.

5. Strange New Worlds (2022)

A very recent addition to the canon, the retro-modern uniforms introduced in Strange New Worlds totally evoke the Pop Art colors of the original series. Only with much better fabrics that show much more in terms of details. The little Starfleet Deltas on the shoulders and sleeves? We love that touch. These uniforms prove that the basic concept of the classic ‘60s series still works today if you do them right. Kudos to SNW costume designer Bernadette Croft for bringing that classic style to the modern day.

6. Star Trek (2009) , Into Darkness, Beyond (2009-2016)

Similar to Strange New Worlds , the “retro chic” uniforms of the Kelvin timeline movies were meant to evoke the bright, primary colors of The Original Series . And they really did just that, just as SNW’s uniforms currently do. The only reason that SNW ranks a wee bit higher is that we’re not super crazy about the “shirt over another shirt” thing the Abrams films had going on. Luckily, that was modified for Star Trek Beyond . But other than that detail, we love these.

7. The Original Series, The Animated Series (1966-1969, 1973-1975)

Yes, to modern eyes, these old-school uniforms look kinda cheap. The shirts scream “your Mom’s favorite fabric store,” and instead of a metal badge, it looks like someone slapped a Starfleet Delta sticker on the shirt. But, these bright primary colors instantly grab your eye, and make you think of a fun rainbow-hued future you actually want to live in. So hats off to TOS designer William Ware Theiss, who made these velour uniforms pop on all those tube television sets back in the day. They will live long and prosper.

8. Deep Space Nine Season 1-5, Generations, Voyager (1993-2001)

These uniforms first appeared on Deep Space Nine in 1993, then in the film Generations in 1994 , and finally in Voyager from 1995-2001. Since they were lost in space, Janeway’s crew was stuck with one uniform design for seven years. They are very classic Trek, and are pretty much the TNG era uniforms, only with color on the shoulders and black in the torso. We dig them, and they’d rank higher, except for one thing. The cut and fit of these really make them look like cozy space pajamas. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

9. Discovery Season 4 (2021-2022)

We were not big fans of the original early 23rd-century designs, seen on Starfleet officers on Discovery. Star Trek only really got away with “one color” uniform standard one time (see entry #1). But when Discovery jumped to the 32nd century , the crew got some snazzy new uniforms to go with their new home in the far future. These costumes evoke the best of TOS, TNG , with a touch of the classic nautical tradition seen in the original movie uniforms, right on the shoulder. We hope these stick around in season five and beyond.

10. Lower Decks (2020-Present animated, 2023 live-action)

Yes, this is an animated show. But it’s canon, so we are counting them. We are not sure why the U.S.S. Cerritos has different uniforms than the rest of Starfleet, but we must admit, these are kind of cool. Much like the current Picard season three uniforms, they combine classic ‘90s Starfleet aesthetic with a little bit of the classic film uniforms, with the open flap on the shirt. The real reason we know these are good is that on the Strange New Worlds episode “Those Old Scientists,” both Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) wore the animated uniforms in live-action, and they were quite fetching.

11. The Next Generation Season 1-2 (1987-1989)

During the first two seasons of TNG , creator Gene Roddenberry decided that in the future, no one would want to see wrinkles. Look, he had a lot of wacky ideas. So he had his original series costume designer William Ware Theiss design jumpsuits that looked like spandex. To avoid wrinkles, they came with a foot strap to go over the shoe so that they could pull it taut. This was pure hell on the backs of the cast. Later, they demanded they be changed for season three into two-piece costumes. The basic design is still iconic, but they just look uncomfortable, making these awkward designs rank this low.

12. Discovery Seasons 1-3 (2017-2020)

Discovery’s first two seasons were set ten years prior to TOS, but the leap from these uniforms to what we saw later is head-scratching. While we like the blue hue, the silver piping on them and the accompanying shoes really just make these uniforms look like space tracksuits. It’s as if Starfleet decided to hire Adidas to design for them. When the crew of the Enterprise showed up in season two in classic colors, it just made us dislike these uniforms even more. Luckily, the Discovery crew eventually ditched them for snazzier threads when they landed 900 years in the future in season 3.

13. Prodigy (2021-2022)

Technically, the uniforms used by the kids on the Protostar in the animated series Prodigy are not quite official Starfleet. But these unique uniforms have a cool design overall. We dig the asymmetry in the torso. But we would love them way more if they ditched the grey and gave us some classic gold, red, and blue. Maybe we’ll get there someday. This series is just in its infancy.

14. Picard Season 1 (2020)

We didn’t see that many Starfleet uniforms in the first two seasons of Picard . But the ones we did see didn’t hit the mark. The basic design recalls the old DS9/Voyager uniforms, but there are just too many extra details on the shoulders. They are just a bit too busy. At least for the higher-ranking officers. The lower-ranking officers were ok, the collars are just awkward. Set phasers to “meh.”

15. The Original Series , Pilot Episodes (1965)

Think of these as prototypes. This sweater/pant set was seen first on Captain Christopher Pike in the first TOS pilot “The Cage.” Then again on Kirk in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second pilot. The design is actually kind of snazzy, in a mid-‘60s Mad Men- era way. But the color palette? Just way too muted. They’re just gray/blue and a boring pale yellow. Kind of yawn-worthy. Not awful, but they didn’t last long enough to make an impression. Luckily, when Star Trek went to series, they got much more fun in terms of color choices.

16. Enterprise (2001-2005)

We understand that Enterprise , set only 150 years in the future , was supposed to look more like our own modern era. But man, these Starfleet uniforms really just look like Captain Archer and crew were working as mechanics in a space garage. They are just a tad too real-world looking, and lack any sci-fi fun and fantasy. They’re still better than the Enterprise theme song though. And luckily for them, they are not the lowest ranked on this list.

17. The Motion Picture (1979)

Talk about coming full circle. Robert Fletcher, the same designer who made these lowest-ranked costumes for The Motion Picture , later designed the best uniforms in Star Trek in our estimation, from films II – VI . Much like the DS9/Voyager uniforms, these straight-up look like pajamas. But unlike the ones worn by Sisko and Janeway, these come in boring tones of beige, gray, and white. I’m sorry, Earth tones are Star Wars . We come to Star Trek to taste the rainbow. And Kirk’s regular duty uniform looks like he’s an interplanetary dentist. These made only one appearance, and there’s a reason why. Blow them out the airlock.

Introduction: Star Trek Voyager Uniform

Star Trek Voyager Uniform

Needing a Star Trek costume, I looked around and discovered that the easiest to make would be the ones from Voyager (along with the later seasons of DS9). For that purpose I looked at numerous pictures and decided to make it from 2 T-shirts (the black one has to be long sleeved). The comm-badge and rank pips I bought on Ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/380652862765?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I chose Lt. Commander, but they have a wide variety

http://www.ebay.com/itm/361147321311?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Velcro backed, resin badge One of the resources I'm using in designing the costume is a sale page of an original costume:

http://propgalaxy.com/products.php?product=STAR-TREK-VOYAGER-EMERGENCY-COMMAND-HOLOGRAM-%28ECH%29-UNIFORM There are a number of pictures which give a good detailed view of the uniform

Step 1: Equipment and Notes

Equipment and Notes

Equipment: 1. Sewing machine 2. Fabric scissors 3. Tape measure 4. Pins, lots of pins Notes: 1. My sewing skills are very basic, I'm sure I made quite a number of rookie mistakes. Any corrections you have, will be added to the Ible with attribution. 2. This project is made mostly using a very old sewing machine, anything even as fancy as a zigzag stitch requires a visit to someone with a better machine, and therefore I didn't do it quite as much as I might have otherwise. Any major seam, almost all seams to be precise, would benefit from a zigzag stich reinforcement. If you have a serger, it sews and cuts at the same time, saving both work and time. 3. This won't look quite as good as some of the costimes you can buy. It'll look at least as good as most of the ones with a similar price, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. My costs (for now just including the shirt) came to ~50$ US. If you actually live *in* the US some of the costs will be lower (for instance, shipping on items from Ebay)

Step 2: Shirts

Shirts

Ideally, you want 2 shirts of the same line, one in black the other in mustard, red, or blue depending on preference. I went for mustard (ops/security/engineering) The second color will be cut under the bottom of the sleeve. The final thing you'll need is a grey (preferably blue grey) mock turtleneck. I found a real turtleneck and made it into a dickie (forgot to take pictures...)

Step 3: Preparing the Yoke

Preparing the Yoke

Note in the first picture, the red yoke on Janeway's uniform goes between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way down the sleeve seem. To make it easier, initially cut at the bottom of the sleeve, we will trim later. Then, cut open the bottom of each sleeve (there's a seam in there, cut it off, and most of the work is done) Finally, fold inwards, to make a hem around 1/3 of the way up the seam. Again, don't worry about the accuracy, it'll be improved later.

Step 4: First Fitting

First Fitting

Depending on the t-shirt you start with, you may discover, as I did, that the black is showing through. I made a second yoke out of the lower half of the shirt. Also, I discovered that the ideal length of the yoke is obtained by folding the piece up until the bottom is at the bottom of the neck piece. once I decided to add a second yoke, I removed the sleeves (carefully) by cutting open the seam.

Step 5: Preparing the Sleeve Part of the Yoke

Preparing the Sleeve Part of the Yoke

Assemble the yoke on the black shirt. I pinned them to help prevent movement. Lay the sleeve from the shirt on the edge of the yoke. you'll notice that it sticks out a bit on top at the edge, fold that part in. Again, I pinned. Next, unfold the sleeve and fold the bottom in such a way that the end of the sleeve comes to a point, fold the top half similarly. There shouldn't be need for much extra fabric of you're doing double layer, and if you're doing a single layer you'll need to trim. Do the same for the other side.

Step 6: Assemble the Yoke and Prepare the Undershirt (or Dickie)

Assemble the Yoke and Prepare the Undershirt (or Dickie)

After measuring again to make sure it's a good fold on the shoulder pieces, it's time to sew the shoulder pieces (sorry, forgot to photograph) and assemble the yoke. To do that, put the 2 pieces of the main part together (one inside the other, I put the real yoke on the inside) and turn inside out. Then, pin the shoulder piece starting at the seam of the yoke and working towards the edge. I found it easier to pin and sew the 2 sides of the shoulder piece separately rather than one continuous seam. Do the same on the other side, and your yoke is almost done.

If you're using a turtleneck, fold down 2/3rds of the neck on the inside and sew around the base of the neck. That leaves ~1/3 hanging loose at the bottom. Insert the rank pins (if you ordered the same ones I did) and when putting on the costume the flap will cover the backing of the pins and protect your neck.

Step 7: Sewing the Yoke

Sewing the Yoke

Step 8: Neck Line and Comm Badge

Neck Line and Comm Badge

The old neckband of the shirt (assuming you only use 1 yoke or put the original yoke on the outside) is made of a material called ribbing. This material is very visible and not the right look, so we need to replace it. For this I'm using instructions found here: http://www.craftstylish.com/item/8413/how-to-sew-a...

First turn the shirt inside out, and pin the 3 (or 2) yokes together .5-1 inch away from the ribbing. Then cut along the ribbing of the black shirt.

Make your neckband (follow the instructions at the link) and turn the shirt right side out. To pin (following the instructions) the neckband on the shirt, remove one pin (from earlier) at a time and before putting it back in (on the outside, this time) line up all the layers (black shirt, division color yoke or 2, neckband). Complete according to the instructions at the link, and you're almost done.

If you ordered the same comm badge as me, you'll have gotten a resin badge with velcro on the back. remove the second piece of the velcro (the one for the shirt) and find the best place for it. Sew by hand, and attach the Comm badge.

At this point the shirt is all done. Either couple with a plain pair of black pants, or (as I'm doing) make a jumpsuit out of it. I'll update the instructable after I finish, to include that part.

Star Trek: 6 Worst Things Done By The Federation, Ranked

The Federation certainly doesn't have clean hands in the Star Trek franchise. These examples demonstrate them at their worst.

  • The Federation's dark side is revealed through blackmailing and trickery in political and wartime scenarios.
  • The actions of key figures like Captain Sisko and Janeway raise ethical questions about Federation ideals.
  • Section 31's drastic measures, including attempted genocide, show the darker side of the Federation's morality.

Star Trek 's United Federation of Planets may ostensibly be the franchise's good guys, but even sci-fi's most progressive utopia has a few skeletons in its closet. This is hardly surprising: Captain Jonathan Archer, a key figure in the founding of the Federation, was not averse to indulging in occasional piracy or torture during his time in command of the Enterprise NX-01. And, while the Federation has many positive aspects, it seems that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree regarding the great power's flaws.

6 Biggest Retcons To Star Trek History

Many of the Federation's worst excesses can be explained (if not excused) by the existence of dire threats or states of widespread conflict . Some, however, are more personal, leading to long-held fan grudges that still simmer decades after the acts themselves. From political machinations to every flavor of war crime, the Federation is hardly blameless, even if the ends sometimes justify the means.

6 Blackmailing Qo'nos

That's one way to win a war.

  • Star Trek: Discovery: "Will You Take My Hand?" (Season 1, Episode 15)

Fans remain split on Star Trek: Discovery. Is it a bold new take on the classic franchise, or does it miss the point by several light-years? Whatever the case, one thing is clear when it comes to the Federation's actions at the end of the show's first season: they're as villainous as they are incoherent. Discovery 's debut season focuses on a dangerous conflict between the Federation and the militaristic Klingon Empire ; faced with the risk of imminent defeat, the Federation enlists the help of Emperor Georgiou, a genocidal dictator from the Mirror Universe.

Georgiou's scheme is as silly as anyone should expect from a Mirror Universe inhabitant. Discovery travels to the Klingon homeworld and hides a bomb inside the planet's crust. While Georgiou's initial plot to destroy the planet is foiled, the Federation uses the bomb as leverage, essentially blackmailing the Klingons into accepting a puppet ruler with pro-Federation policies. Enforced regime change on a grand scale is hardly the action of a benevolent state, suggesting that the Federation is less virtuous than it likes to pretend.

5 Tricking The Romulans

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "In the Pale Moonlight" (Season 6, Episode 19)

"In the Pale Moonlight" is one of the Star Trek franchise's most iconic episodes. Set during the Federation's darkest days, the episode sees Captain Sisko enlist the help of former spy Elim Garak to bring the Romulan Star Empire into the war on the allied side. The devious Romulans are unwilling to join forces with their Federation rivals, so Sisko and Garak are forced to use a blend of deception and diplomacy to achieve their strategic goals.

8 Coolest Starships From Star Trek: The Next Generation

Admittedly, Garak is responsible for many of the scheme's more villainous aspects, such as orchestrating the death of a Romulan senator to implicate the Dominion. However, Sisko (and by extension the Federation) is a driving force behind the plot. Bringing the Romulans into the war proves essential for ensuring an eventual Federation victory, but the Federation's methodology for doing so remains questionable. Yet, as Sisko points out, he will simply have to live with his villainy.

4 The Forced Deportation Of The Ba'ku

Do the ends ever justify the means.

  • Star Trek: Insurrection

Deep Space Nine 's Dominion War sent shockwaves throughout the franchise, with its impact felt in a range of TV shows, novels, and movies. Indeed, despite featuring characters from The Next Generation , Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) examines the Federation's ethics during wartime. Dominion forces are overwhelming the Federation Alliance at every turn, but the planet of Ba'ku may prove to be a secret weapon. The Federation plans to use Ba'ku's naturally medicinal environment as a hospital for its war effort, but there's a problem.

The planet is already home to the Ba'ku people , and the Federation becomes embroiled in a plot to forcibly relocate the native population to another planet. This policy becomes even harder to defend once it becomes apparent that the supposedly friendly Son'a have their own vendetta against the Ba'ku. It's no wonder, then, that Captain Picard and his crew elected to defy the Federation in this case. Picard may be one of the Federation's most famous figures, but he refuses to be complicit in its wrongdoing.

3 Using Bioweapons To Poison A Planet

Did captain sisko go too far.

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "For the Uniform" (Season 5, Episode 13)

When does the quest for justice become a bloody hunt for revenge? This question is posed by "For the Uniform," an episode that pits the morally gray Captain Sisko against the traitorous Eddington, a member of the Maquis terrorist group . The Maquis plan to deploy biological weapons to drive the alien Cardassians away from planets which the Marquis claim for themselves. Sisko, however, turns the plot on its head by using his biological weapons against the planets, making them uninhabitable for humans.

Star Trek: Things You Didn’t Know About Benjamin Sisko

Sisko's decision to devastate an entire planet is one of Star Trek 's most shocking moments, and this is emphasized by Worf's initial hesitation to obey Sisko's command. Sisko believes that drastic action is the only way to force Eddington to surrender, but fans continue to debate whether the Emissary of the Prophets let his emotions cloud his judgment. Eddington made a fool of Sisko by betraying and then openly attacking the Federation—in doing so, he pushed Sisko into ordering one of the Federation's most evil acts.

2 The Attempted Genocide Of The Founders

When does warfare become a war crime.

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "What You Leave Behind" (Season 7, Episodes 25 & 26)

The Federation may be a place of intellectual progress and equality, but its benevolence conceals a seedy underbelly. Section 31, a Federation intelligence agency with a broad remit and a questionable moral compass. Section 31 and its agents are responsible for some heinous actions, such as blackmailing Starfleet officers and employing villains from the Mirror Universe . However, Section 31's most radical scheme involves the attempted genocide of the Dominion's Founders.

The Federation, via Section 31, infects the Founders with a morphogenic virus that is designed to exterminate the species. While this would bring about the end of the devastating Dominion War, it demonstrates that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Luckily, good intentions save the Federation in the long run, as curing the disease convinces the Founders to end the war.

1 Janeway's Murder (?) Of Tuvix

Can kathryn janeway ever be redeemed.

  • Star Trek: Voyager : "Tuvix" (Season 2, Episode 24)

Kathryn Janeway may be just one Starfleet captain, but she and her starship represent the whole of the Federation's presence in the far-off Delta Quadrant . As such, many of her actions have raised fans' eyebrows, from allying with the Borg against Species 872 to falling in love with a holographic character (and deleting his wife from the program). However, viewers are especially disgusted by Janeway's treatment of Tuvix, a hybrid inadvertently created from the Vulcan Tuvok and the Talaxian Neelix.

Star Trek: 8 Best Book-Only Characters, Ranked

Tuvix is sentient, displays a unique sense of self and identity, and makes it clear that he wants to live. Janeway, however, sees things from a more utilitarian perspective: she's lost one of her best officers due to Tukov's hybridization into Tuvix. Her decision to overrule Tuvix's right to exist to restore the status quo represents Janeway at her most ruthless, and many fans have yet to forgive Star Trek 's first female captain. As Federation crimes go, it's a small one, but some still take it personally.

Star Trek just altered uniform canon — Prodigy showrunners explain why

The Protostar crew is looking sharp. Here’s how their cool threads are woven into the larger Trek timeline.

star trek janeway uniform

Starfleet uniforms change constantly. From The Original Series to The Next Generation to newer shows like Picard and Discovery , part of the fun of a Trek series is seeing the latest spin on the uniforms. However, for Trekkie canon-nitpickers, Starfleet’s various fashion shifts have resulted in eras with different uniforms in play simultaneously. And with the big Prodigy cliffhanger, “A Moral Star Part 1,” yet another new Starfleet uniform has been introduced. But Prodigy showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman have answers! Here’s what they said about how Prodigy’s new duds fit into the 2383 timeline of Trek.

When the crew of the USS Protostar decide to return to Tars Lamora for a heroic rescue mission, they also decide it’s time to look like a proper crew. So far, Dal, Zero, Gywn, Jankom, Murf, and Rok-Tahk have been a bit rag-tag in their civilian clothes, because they’re technically not part of Starfleet at all. Visually, this has made them closer to the “motley crew” of the La Sirena in Picard than any other Trek team . This means that suiting up for “A Moral Star Part 1” was a big deal.

In an email interview, the Prodigy showrunner brothers explained why this episode was the right time for the kids to get their new Starfleet uniforms.

Star Trek Prodigy

Even Hologram Janeway got a new uniform this time out.

Why Prodigy got new uniforms

“We knew at this mid-season break we wanted the crew to return to Tars Lamora to save the rest of the miners,” the Hagemans explain. “And as Janeway states, ‘There’s nothing more Starfleet than that.’ So what better time for our crew to don the uniform?”

The Hagemans also reveal that they “never wanted them to don Starfleet uniforms too early in the season,” because when the crew puts on the new uniforms the moment “means something.”

Star Trek Picard

Picard and Raffi in a flashback for Picard Season 1, set in 2385; just two years after Star Trek: Prodigy and four years after Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2.

Prodigy uniforms in Star Trek canon

Because Prodigy takes place in 2383, this specific uniform style now exists alongside two, perhaps three other styles in service at Starfleet. In the 2380-2381 era of Lower Decks we got the funky uniforms worn by the crew of the Cerritos and other California-class starships. Lower Decks also made it clear that these uniforms were in service at the same time as the First Contact -style uniforms which pervaded most of the TNG movies and the later seasons of DS9 . In 2020, Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan pointed out the precedent in ‘90s Trek canon for various uniform styles to change “every year,” and that he hopes to do a Lower Decks episode in which “they’re testing new uniforms on Boimler."

Star Trek Lower Decks

The Lower Decks uniforms probably exist at the same time as the new Prodigy ones.

But in Picard Season 1, we saw a uniform style different from both the Lower Decks and First Contact era. They must have rolled out sometime in 2385, because Picard, Raffi, Icheb, and others wear that style in the flashbacks. So, what gives? Has Prodigy contradicted this canon? Nope! Here’s why.

The Prodigy uniforms might change, again!

According to the Hagemans, these new uniforms and combadge are unique to this specific ship.

“Since the USS Protostar is an experimental starship, we felt it gave us some freedom to create our own uniform design, as long as it fit alongside the uniforms of this era. We, [executive producer] Ben Hibon, and our design team spent a lot of time discussing the badge and uniforms. We had to balance the style of our series, while also recognizing these kids aren’t actually anywhere close to being Starfleet Officers, which is why we went for a stripped-down design.”

They also doubled down on the Mike McMahan approach, saying “we all know different styles of combadges often co-existed in the same era, and we knew we wanted something special for Prodigy. ”

The second part of the latest Prodigy cliffhanger — “A Moral Star, Part 2” — will air next Wednesday on Paramount+, which the Hagemans promise “was written to be a satisfying conclusion to the first 10 episodes.” But, they also point out that the crew still “has a long way to go.”

For fans of the characters, the crew of the Protstar will surely continue to grow and change. But the Hagemans also hinted that those changes could be reflected in even newer uniforms down the line. “Throughout the seasons, we want their uniforms to evolve with them.”

Star Trek: Prodigy airs its early 2022 finale on February 3, 2022, on Paramount+. The series will return with more episodes in late 2022. Read the full Star Trek schedule here.

EXO-6 Unveils New 1:6 Captain Janeway Figure

"Abandon Ship? The answer's ‘no.’ I'm not breaking up the family."

Star Trek: Voyager - Kate Mulgrew

StarTrek.com

EXO-6 is proud to bring one of everyone’s favorite Starfleet captains to their line of 1:6 scale articulated collectible figures.

The first female captain to headline a Star Trek series, Kathryn Janeway shepherded the U.S.S. Voyager through the Borg-infested Delta Quadrant and safely returned her crew home after seven successful seasons.  Janeway would not hesitate to defy Starfleet protocol and lead away missions herself, even into a Borg cube where she’d make sure she’s the last one out. She led her crew as a wise single parent, even guiding the holographic Doctor and the former Borg, Seven of Nine, into growing and learning what it meant to be human. Kate Mulgrew’s portrayal of the brave and resourceful; yet warm and vulnerable captain endeared her to the millions of fans that cite Voyager as their favorite Star Trek series.

Star Trek: Voyager

As seen in the later seasons, Janeway is depicted with her traditional shoulder-length hair, and she has a bit of the sassiness that Mulgrew brought to the character.

This 1:6-scale figure re-creates this iconic character in exquisite 1:6 detail. Standing approximately 11 inches tall, every element, from her 24th century jumpsuit to her custom black boots, is authentically reproduced. The original portrait sculpt of Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway has an authentic, hand-painted likeness.

The EXO-6 Janeway 1:6 Scale Articulated Figure includes:

  • Fully Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple dynamic poses, approximately 30 cm tall.
  • Realistic Portrait: Janeway’s portrait is lovingly rendered by top artists, with an excellent likeness of Kate Mulgrew in her role as Voyager ’s captain. Each head sculpt is specially hand-painted.
  • Starfleet Duty Uniform Jumpsuit: Meticulously researched, this duty uniform matches the pattern, and color of the original costume recreated in 1:6 scale. Magnets are sewn into the uniform so the holsters for the tricorder and phaser can be attached. An authentically scaled communicator badge is permanently affixed to the tunic.
  • Boots: Soft plastic boots sculpted to match the cut and style of the original series footwear.
  • Display Base: A hexagonal display base featuring the transporter pad will provide additional support for the figure. Two different inserts for the floor of the base can represent the transporter pad or the center of the transporter array.

Star Trek: Voyager

Captain Janeway is outfitted with everything needed for a Starfleet officer. She comes equipped with:

  • Type II hand phaser: The phaser can be worn in a black holster that magnetically attaches to the jumpsuit.
  • TR-590 Tricorder X: This standard tricorder can be opened or worn in a holster.
  • Phaser rifle: Compression Phaser rifle used by the Voyager crew.
  • Coffee cup: “Coffee, black.” Janeway couldn’t start her day without her signature beverage.

This fine collectible figure is a perfect rendition of one of Starfleet's greatest captains and is a great addition to your EXO-6 Star Trek ™ 1:6-scale figure collection. The figure will go on sale for $189.95.

Screen Rant

Star trek: voyager's uniforms created a plot hole.

Star Trek: Voyager put a Maquis crew in Starfleet uniform, which makes Seven of Nine's catsuit a plot hole. Why was Seven left out of Starfleet?

In Star Trek: Voyager , Seven of Nine's catsuit creates a plot hole that is never completely explained on the show.   Star Trek has an unspoken loophole in Starfleet uniform regulations, exempting some female crewmates from wearing the uniform in favor of a tight catsuit, but that doesn't fully elaborate on what happened with Jeri Ryan's character.

Seven of Nine is not Starfleet, but neither is most of Star Trek: Voyager 's crew . When the Caretaker stranded the ship in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Janeway fully integrated the Maquis crew into their ship, including granting them provisional Starfleet commissions and uniforms. When Seven of Nine joined the crew, she almost never wore a uniform, even though she served in the same capacity as a science officer aboard Voyager. Janeway had already made the exception for the Maquis crew, so why did Seven of Nine not integrate in the same way?

Related:  Star Trek Hints At Seven of Nine's Borg Future Post-Picard

The real reason for Seven's catsuit was increasing ratings, as Ryan was meant to add sex appeal to the show in tight molded and corseted outfits. The in-universe reason is never explicitly discussed on screen, but there is one: Seven of Nine's bodysuit helped regenerate her human skin after she spent most of her life in a Borg drone suit. Over the course of Voyager , though, Seven does wear clothes besides her catsuits and appears to have perfect skin whenever it's revealed. Aside from the purported medical reason for the outfit, civilians aboard Starfleet ships are able to choose their attire. Neelix and Kes were never granted any status in Starfleet, so they continued to wear their own clothes. But they were Delta Quadrant natives, not humans intending to return to Earth with Voyager like Seven of Nine. Janeway could have extended Seven the same provisional status in Starfleet, given that she was along for the 70-year ride.

Seven of Nine is not the only Starfleet crewmate to avoid the uniform. Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation , Major Kira in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and T'Pol in Star Trek: Enterprise all wear different outfits. In T'Pol and Major Kira's cases, eschewing the uniform is used to show their separate allegiances. Major Kira is Bajoran militia, and T'Pol reports to the Vulcan High Command. In Troi's case, her outfit seemed to be a personal choice. When Captain Jellico ordered Troi to wear a uniform, it was because he expected formality on the bridge. This implied that Captain Picard allowed Troi to wear civilian clothes despite her Starfleet status, either for personal or cultural reasons. Following that episode, Troi continued to wear a Starfleet uniform. However, on Star Trek: Discovery , Michael Burnham was given a standard uniform to serve as a science specialist without rank or official status in Starfleet, so there is precedent for granting uniforms to civilian specialists.

Given Voyager's melting pot crew, Seven of Nine's lack of uniform leaves her on the outside for no clear reason. Her civilian clothes show that Seven never received a commission into Starfleet, a status she should have earned through her years of work on Voyager. It's possible that Seven of Nine simply chose to remain separate from Starfleet, as she was still adjusting to her humanity and her place among the crew by the series finale. She was trying to rediscover her individuality, and she may have remained outside of the command structure in pursuit of that goal. If any of these possible reasons for her catsuit were discussed on-screen, they could have added more character depth to a ratings-based decision.

Although Starfleet's uniforms are constantly changing  throughout the franchise, the meaning remains the same. The uniform is a symbol within Star Trek , including Star Trek: Voyager , and Seven of Nine deserved a better explanation for being stripped of that symbol.

Star Trek: Voyager's Janeway Becoming Ripley From Alien Explained By Producer

  • Captain Janeway's "Ripley" moments in "Macrocosm" left a notable impact on Star Trek: Voyager.
  • Brannon Braga didn't intend to copy Alien with "Macrocosm," instead wanting to create a dialogue-light episode.
  • "Macrocosm" allowed Janeway to showcase new action-hero qualities while retaining her core characteristics.

Star Trek: Voyager 's Executive Producer Brannon Braga explained his real inspiration behind the episode where Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) becomes Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from Alien . Although both Voyager and Alien are science fiction, there are a lot of differences between the Star Trek and Alien franchises. While Alien focuses on blending horror and suspense with its sci-fi elements, Star Trek almost always takes a more optimistic approach to the future. However, there are occasionally Star Trek episodes that take on more of a horror twist .

One such episode was Voyager season 3, episode 12, "Macrocosm," where an alien virus managed to take over the USS Voyager, mutating to grow at least a meter in length and then proceeding to make Voyager 's cast of characters very sick. As the lone un-infected, Captain Janeway was forced to mount a guerrilla attack on the viruses while the Doctor (Robert Picardo) worked on finding a cure. Along with similar premises, "Macrocosm" seemed to take a lot of influence from Alien , especially in how it portrayed Janeway as its heroine.

Star trek: voyagers janeway alien episode explained by executive producer, braga's intention wasn't actually to copy alien.

Despite Janeway's crusade against the viruses in "Macrocosm" often being compared to Ellen Ripley, Brannon Braga, who wrote the episode's story, claimed it wasn't his intention to create a tribute to Alien . In an interview with Cinefantastique around the time of the episode's release, Braga stated that "Macrocosm" actually rose out of a desire to do a solo character story with very little dialogue , and implied that any comparisons between Janeway and Ripley were completely unintentional. Read Braga's full quote below:

"Sometimes Star Trek can be a little high-and-mighty, talky, moralistic. Sometimes it's just time to have fun. The intention actually began, on my part, to do an episode with no dialogue. I wanted to just do a purely cinematic episode with Janeway and a bunch of weird creatures, these macroviruses, viruses as life-sized creatures. Unfortunately it was impossible to do, and I ended up having to put a couple of acts of dialogue in. I just wanted to do something that felt and looked and smelled differently than most shows. It was not an attempt to make Janeway look like Ripley."

Despite Braga's protestations, it is hard not to see the numerous similarities between Janeway and Sigourney Weaver's iconic Alien role in "Macrocosm." Stripped down to her uniform's undershirt and equipped with a large phaser rifle for defense, Janeway embodied the recognizable sci-fi "final girl" aesthetic popularized by Weaver's portrayal of Ripley in the first Alien film from 1979 . Given what a recognizable character Ripley is thanks to Alien 's popularity, it's no wonder that "Macrocosm" became such a memorable episode of Voyager after it aired.

Why Captain Janeways Ripley Moments In Star Trek: Voyager Are Still So Popular

"macrocosm's" version of janeway is still extremely well-liked.

Despite not being one of Voyager 's most popular episodes, Janeway's "Ripley" scenes in "Macrocosm" left an indelible mark on the series. This is likely due to what a departure Janeway's actions and aesthetic were from how she was usually portrayed on Voyager . "Macrocosm" allowed Janeway to be a true action hero , showing that she was able to handle more than just the scientific and diplomatic aspects of being a Captain.

However, Janeway never lost what made her such a popular character in the first place, including her stubborn determination and fierce loyalty to her crew. Her nearly single-handed defeat of the macrovirus perfectly demonstrated how far she was willing to go to make sure everyone under her protection was safe. The macrovirus itself also likely contributed to the episode's popularity , and demonstrated its longevity when it was brought back as part of Star Trek: Lower Decks ' tribute episode to Voyager , "Two-vix." Lower Decks helped remind audiences just how iconic "Macrocosm" was for Star Trek: Voyager season 3.
