An LGBTQ Travel Guide to Bangkok

The Land of Smiles directs a most welcoming grin towards LGBTQ visitors and residents alike, and Bangkok , also known as the City of Angels, with a population of approximately 12 million, is one of Asia's most essential, exciting, and rapidly evolving metropolises. The city became host to the first official Asia-set spin-off of RuPaul's Drag Race, " Drag Race Thailand ," which has launched numerous queens' international careers in its two seasons (so far!) including its English-speaking, UCLA-educated half-Taiwanese Bangkok-based co-host, Pangina Heals . Transgender identity is also a thread woven into the society's fabric, with celebrities including pop music stars Gene Kasidit and Belle Nuntita , model Kulchaya "Candy" Tansiri, and filmmaker turned MP ( she was elected to the House of Parliament in May 2019 ), Tanwarin "Golf" Sukkhapisit, who is determined to follow Taiwan in bringing legal marriage equality to Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)'s English language Go Thai Be Free website and campaign is rich with information and resources, including dedicated sections for its major cities and islands, including, of course, Bangkok .

April's Songkran, Thailand's New Year celebration, sees the entire city turn into a jubilant, water-drenched playground, with plenty of queer folks getting in on the action. During this time, Bangkok also hosts the annual gCircuit , a four-day series of jam-packed LGBTQ dances and events, including pool parties for bears, muscle boys, and everyone in between, with an impressive line-up of both global and local DJs. And the city's famed Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 strips remain buzzing LGBTQ nightlife (and all-male massage joint) meccas with their bevy of bars, nightclubs, and drag cabarets.

Bangkok is also home to a significant and visible lesbian population, including the masculine-appearing "toms" (short for tomboys). Check out the online short documentary, " Toms: The Complex World of Female Love In Thailand ," for more on this scene and LGBTQ subculture. Women can also get their groove on at the monthly LESLA lesbian party.

The Best Things To Do

There's no better way to get a true sense of place in Bangkok than a cruise along the Chao Phraya River, lined on either side by iconic structures and temples (and luxury hotels!). The gay-owned 40-seat Supanniga Cruise ship is one of the classiest ways to take in the sights and atmosphere and offers a daily choice of a cocktail and champagne cruise (with an optional "afternoon tea" style set) or a full six-course sunset dinner excursion that includes a glass of bubbly and authentic Thai dishes. You're sure to spot both Thai and farang LGBTQ couples enjoying the romance, food, cocktails, and sights, and it's a welcome alternative to the gaudy disco-blasting, buffet-serving vessels that overtake the river after sundown.

Opened in late 2018, IconSIAM is the Chao Phraya's newest addition and the first major, glittery, top-end shopping center on the other side of the river. Home to Bangkok's first Apple store and a ground-level food court, Sook Siam, the shopping center also boasts a mix of major international prestige brands and local artisanal goods alike, including aromatherapy and spa brand Thaan. There are also dozens of restaurants, including the casual, fun, and delicious Thai-Italian fusion restaurant Greyhound Cafe (a big favorite of local and visiting Asian LGBTQ folks, from bears to Toms to drag queens!). Greyhound has multiple locations around the city and is a must.

One of Bangkok's most underrated attractions is its Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA Bangkok . Although outside the city center and requiring a taxi or Uber ride to access, its five floors are dedicated to the stunning breadth of Thailand's contemporary artists—quite a few being LGBTQ—and their work. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Art & Culture Center , located right off the BTS Skytrain and just next to major shopping centers MBK and Siam Discovery, recently hosted Asia's largest art exhibition of regional LGBTQ work to date, " Spectrosynthesis II — Exposure of Tolerance: LGBTQ in Southeast Asia." Resembling New York's Guggenheim inside with its spiral-like architecture, the building is also home to cool local shops and cafes.

The entire sixth floor of shopping center Central Embassy is home to the incredible gay-owned Open House Bookshop by Hardcover , a photogenic, beautifully designed series of shelves packed with mostly art-themed tomes and goods surrounding a fabulous variety of cafes and restaurant outlets as well.

More than just a gay bathhouse, Babylon is an internationally beloved, well maintained gay men's Bangkok institution with sauna facilities, a swimming pool, gym, and full-service spa pampering services. It's frequented by both locals and visitors alike. Also popular, the creative and hipster Ari district's Chakran celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2020, while 39 Underground , just one BTS stop north in nearby Saphan Khwai, draws an almost exclusively local Thai crowd.

Bangkok is also home to a family-friendly, excellent Japanese-style onsen facility, Yunomori . It's a perfect day and night indulgence, with full massage treatments, food (the beer with a sweet ginger shot is delicious), and wet areas (nude and gender-segregated).

While the term "ladyboy" has finally been tossed in the rubbish, one can still see Thailand's talented transgender women perform in a cabaret performance at Calypso .

The Best LGBTQ Bars and Clubs in Bangkok

Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 continue to be hotspots for Bangkok's for LGBTQ nightlife and are extremely friendly to travelers. Sadly, local rumors have it that these iconic strips may be redeveloped entirely in the coming years, so enjoy while you can!

Check out "Thailand Drag Race" stars in action at Soi 4's The Stranger bar, including Jaja, Angele Anang, and the show's English-speaking, wickedly funny co-host Pangina Heals, also known as Pan Pan Nakprasert, who helped popularize the queer dance style, waacking, in Southeast Asia.

See and be seen (with a beverage and even some grub of course) at an outdoor table at Soi 4's 30-plus-year-old Telephone Pub or neighbors The Balcony , Connections , and G's . Just up a flight of stairs, the three-year-old HUGs caters to bears, cubs, and their friends.

For elaborate drag production numbers (replete with choreography and back-up dancers) and dancefloor action, head to Soi 2's long-running, multi-level DJ Station , neighboring Disco Disco , and G (formerly known as G.O.D.).

Although the upscale, chic Maggie Choo's discontinued its weekly gay night in early 2020, promoter Ken Kreangsak Lieng continues to throw new, exciting gay parties and events throughout Bangkok via his G-Spot Entertainment .

If you're wanting a lower-key spot with stunning design, craft cocktails, and mixed crowd, check out the Iron Balls Gin Parlour & Saloon , serving locally distilled Iron Balls Gin, the trendy Thonglor district speakeasy J. Boroski (no menus: just cite your favorite spirit and flavors and they'll whip up something with seasonal market fruits and herbs), and Silom's Vesper .

The Best Places to Eat

Openly gay Thai restauranteur Thanaruek Laoraowirodge, known as Khun Eh, is behind Somtum Der , a buzzy, cute, casual, and affordable Isan-style restaurant near the Silom nightlife—you might even spot a few LGBTQ Thai celebs here! Since 2011, he has since expanded the brand to New York (where it received a Michelin star), Vietnam, and Japan, and other locations across Bangkok. Sister venue Supanniga Eating Room , with locations in Sathorn, Thonglor, and Charoen Krung, takes its menu from his grandmother's Eastern Thai culinary repertoire.

Also a gay-owned favorite, 22-year-old Silom restaurant Eat Me is a consistent presence on culinary "Best Of" lists, thanks to both to New York ex-pat chef Tim Butler's inventive, upscale fusion cuisine (there's a vegan menu as well!), fresh contemporary vibe, and edgy art exhibitions. Local LGBTQ foodies also magnet to locavore and organic-centric (and very LGBTQ-inclusive in both the kitchen and front of house) upscale venues Le Du , Bo.Lan , 80/20 , and one of the hardest tables to snag in Thailand, Sorn . Awarded two Michelin stars in 2020 and included on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list, Sorn is situated in a gorgeously renovated mansion and presents some of the most upscale, time-consuming, utterly delicious preparations of Southern Thai cuisine you'll find in the world.

Where to Stay

The Sathorn district's 403-room W Bangkok is as chic, clubby, and modern (and yes, LGBTQ!) as one expects from the fashion-loving brand, and conveniently located just near the BTS. Its swimming pool is just begging for social media photos, and the AWAY spa a fab way to pamper away the afternoon.

Located just off Lumphini Park and steps from Silom, The SO/Bangkok , formerly the Sofitel So, offers 237 rooms in four different element-themed designs (water, wood, earth, metal). All are fantastic, while savoring a cocktail at either the outdoor Water Club swimming pool or rooftop HI-SO bar are musts... with a park view!

Gay Bangkok power couple in life and work, Bill Bensley and Jirachai Rengthong, have designed some of Southeast Asia's most stunning resorts and private residences, including Bangkok's own leafy, sumptuous urban oasis, The Siam , which is just tucked away from the Chao Phraya River. If you want to stay on and overlook the Chao Phraya, the 144-year-old Mandarin Oriental Bangkok , which completed a $140 million renovation in December 2019, is as iconic as it gets with stunning spa, afternoon tea, award-winning cocktail spot Bamboo Bar, and direct water shuttle service to IconSIAM across the river.

Gay Bangkok for First Timers - The Nomadic Boys

Our guide to gay Bangkok 2023 has all the information you need including the best gay hotels to stay, gay bars, where to play and practical safety tips.

Gay Bangkok Guide for First Time Visitors

“OMG Stefan, we almost hit that car…I can’t…I’m going to keep my eyes firmly closed! Just let me know when we’ve arrived safely at Stranger Bar while I pray to the gay gods for safe passage…”

Nothing beats the rush of adrenaline as we whizzed through the CRAZY traffic jams of Bangkok hanging on for dear life inside a cutesy tuk-tuk with its driver smiling at these two hysterical giggling foreigners in the back…

We both love it – the feeling of the humid, almost putrid air hitting your face as you swerve from one end of the street to the other, car horns manically beeping at each other.

We’ll be frank, Bangkok is by no means a pretty city. Our initial reaction on our first visit was: what a hot mess! It’s polluted, it’s dirty, rats compete for space on the busy pavements, the traffic is mad, and concrete blocks line the streets as far as your eyes can see.

The Most Fabulous and Almost-Gay Hostels in Bangkok! 🇹🇭

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Welcome to Bangkok, one of the best destinations for gay travelers in Asia! It’s time to dive into a gay adventure into the country of smiles.

As the capital of Thailand, the city of Bangkok is the most vibrant city in Thailand, long known to be one of the best, if not the very best, cities for gay adventurers. Thailand’s society has long been very open and tolerant to not only gays but also transsexuals as well. In Bangkok , there is no shame for being gay, and you can be as fabulous as you want without any judgment from the locals.

Long been considered the bastion of gay rights in Asia, Thailand is teeming with gay rights activism and events. The city usually sees flamboyant events such as drag queen parades and gat concerts in public, attracting a huge crowd of audience. In recent years, Thailand Pride Parade, which is usually organized in Phuket , has begun to move to Bangkok to show solidarity and unity for gay rights.

Long considered a great tourist spot in Asia, Bangkok has everything for your vacation away from the hassles of reality. Being a Buddhist country, there is no shortage of stunning ancient pagodas and serene monasteries for you to visit. After visiting pagodas, finish your spiritual experience with a traditional Thai massage to ease up the muscles. A tip for you: there are also gay massage parlors on the street of Bangkok!

However, if you are not here on a spiritual healing trip, do not lose hope yet, for Bangkok has more than just religious relics. As the night falls, life springs up in Bangkok. The city casts off its religious and solemn mien to enjoy the fun its luxurious nightclubs offer.

Luxury, chic, and full of fun people, these nightclubs will lull you to a night you will never forget. A huge plus is that this fun is not exclusively for heterosexuals, but gays can also enjoy their own.

Gay nightclubs and gay bars abound in Bangkok, and there are also gay shows on a daily basis that will give you a night to remember. If the noise gives you a headache, take a moment to clear off your mind in local gay saunas, where you might have a chance to meet up with nice and interesting people from all over the world.

Gay Guide Bangkok - Gay Hotel Bangkok

For those wanting something more refined, Bangkok might have just what you need. Long known as the place to be to enjoy a luxury vacation, Bangkok will offer you all the bling you need for your luxury gay getaway. From rooftop bars to private clubs, most top luxury venues in Bangkok are very friendly to gays, so put aside all worries and enjoy a great night with your new friends.

Whether you are here for wild nights or for a spiritual trip, you will need a place to sleep for the night. As gay travelers, you might harbor some fear about gay discrimination in Bangkok. However, do not be worried, as there are plenty of gay hostels in the city.

Be the luxury or modest, these high-quality hostels will provide you with great and safe lodging for the night. Let’s dive into the most fabulous and most gay-friendly hostels in Bangkok with the list below!

Thailand Gay Travel

From the streets of bangkok to the sun-soaked beaches of phuket, gay travellers love thailand's diverse landscape..

Thailand has a devoted fan base of gay and lesbian travellers of all stripes. From its white-sand beaches to its preserved tropical jungles, queer-welcoming cities and, of course, spicy cuisine, there’s something for everyone.

White-Sand Beaches

Along its peninsular south alone, The Land of Smiles boasts more beaches than any other Southeast Asian destination. In Phuket, hedonists can drink fresh coconut water on popular Patong Beach by day and throw back shots of Sangsom with local Kathoey (drag queens) by night. In Krabi, a more peaceful respite awaits LGBT jet setters, with many resorts only accessible by longtail boat. Sea kayaking, snorkelling and even scuba diving are available at both destinations. Meanwhile, baby gays flock to Thailand’s numerous islands, such as Koh Tao and Koh Samui, to indulge in the azure waters, cheap beer and full moon parties (a wild affair popularized by Leonard Decaprio’s cult classic, The Beach).

Tropical Jungles

Eco-tourism has a long history in Thailand, where the endangered Asian elephant roams in the lush (but slowly shrinking) tropical jungles. The country’s mountainous north is particularly well known for its cool-climate countryside. Fields carpeted in rice paddies collide with jungle and mountain. Gay hikers looking to explore this agricultural region are often rewarded with picturesque waterfalls and a menagerie of exotic birds, butterflies and adorable wildlife.

Queer-Welcoming Cities

Bangkok is the country’s capital and the beating heart of its LGBT scene. While the noisy city isn’t for everyone, more often than not, visitors are enthralled by its blend of modernism and tradition. For example, you’ll see saffron-clad monks shopping the city’s numerous megamalls and BMWs parked in front of centuries-old Buddhist temples. A sophisticated rapid train (the MRT) ushers locals between skyscrapers, The Grand Palace and the Chao Phraya River. For those looking to savour the city’s gay nightlife, head to Silom 2 near the Central Business District. In our opinion, Silom 2 offers one of the most (if not the most) welcoming and accessible gay scenes throughout Asia.

Spicy Cuisine

At Out Adventures HQ, we have a popular saying: Travel Stomach First. In other words, we let our taste buds lead us worldwide. And, like so many before us, our taste buds have led us to Thailand, where a symphony of fiery chillies, salty fish sauce, fresh sugar cane and tangy citrus fruits paint a culinary masterpiece. In Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and other northern provinces, you’ll love the tropical curries. Meanwhile, in the south, freshly hooked seafood is grilled with lemongrass and chillies. If you want an authentic taste of Thailand’s famous cuisine, we highly recommend booking a popular street food tour, guided market visit or Thai cooking class.

LGBT Rights in Thailand

Gay thailand travel, best places to visit in thailand.

Despite Thailand’s open arms policy towards gay foreigners, LGBT locals still fight for equal rights and protections. A divide exists between how gay westerners and gay locals are treated.

Thailand is an exceptional destination for gay travellers. Even smaller cities tend to have gay-welcoming bars frequented by locals and tourists.

5. Koh Samui

Home of the infamous Full Moon Party, Koh Samui is a long-celebrated tropical oasis. Koh Samui tends to be populated by younger backpackers. Still, the shockingly beautiful island has plenty to offer seasoned travellers as well including some of the country’s best snorkelling and scuba diving.

Phuket is Thailand’s premiere resort island and has one of the country’s largest gay scenes. The main drag is buzzing – often overcrowded – and not worth much of your time. However, renting a scooter and exploring the island’s less-visited sections may lead to secret beaches, memorable food experiences and some incredible Andaman vantages.

3. Chiang Rai

On the cusp of Myanmar and Laos sits the province of Chiang Rai. Climb the region’s colourful mountains or descend into its lush valleys and the snaking Mekong.

2. Chiang Mai

When you’ve had just about enough of Bangkok’s frenzy, take shelter in calming Chiang Mai. This northern capital is distinctly Thai and has a wide range of cultural activities to keep visitors entertained.

Bangkok is the true epicentre of Gay Asia and the East’s answer to ‘The City that Never Sleeps.’ It is a thrilling extravaganza full of cultural highlights, historical sights, gastronomic delights and BIG city nights. After a day exploring the sprawling city, head to Silom for some of the best gay nightlife in all of Asia, including world-class Cabarets and drag shows, exceptional gay bars and dangerously packed gay clubs.

Best Time to Visit:  Winter (Nov-Mar) is the ideal time to visit Thailand. Temperatures are cooler, and – depending on which side of the country you visit – there’s less chance of rain. Even then, it will be hot and sticky, with daytime temperatures exceeding 30C/85F.

Electricity:  A-, B-, and C-type sockets.

Time Zone:  (GMT+07:00) Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta

Covid-19 Vaccination Requirements: We’re dedicated to ensuring our tours are safe for everyone, but it is our belief that each traveler has a responsibility to protect themselves and their fellow travellers from COVID-19. As of May 1, 2023, Out Adventures no longer requires guests to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination on most of our tours. If vaccination is a requirement for entry, or on select cruises, this will be communicated at the time a trip is confirmed to depart. Before booking, we recommend that you read our COVID-19 Information Page and our COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions to understand what we’re doing to minimize risk, and what will happen if you contract COVID-19 before or during an Out Adventures tour.

Other Vaccinations: Based on the entry requirements for Thailand, there are no other vaccinations needed. To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, you should consult your doctor or a travel medical clinic, as Out Adventures cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Visas:  A visa is not typically required for American, Australian, British and Canadian citizens travelling to Thailand for fewer than 30 days. There may be exceptions, and all visas are the traveller’s responsibility.

Go Thai. Be Free - Tourism Authority of Thailand LGBT+ Travel Inspiration

Asia’s most LGBT+ welcoming metropolis

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital is also known as the “City of Angels” (Krung Thep). It is a bustling city, steeped in tradition and yet one of the most modern metropolises in the world. Soaring skyscrapers, cutting-edge art and fashion, colorful temples, and mesmerizing royal palaces, Bangkok will thrill and amaze you.

It is by far the most densely populated city in Thailand with about 12 million people surrounded by the flowing waters of the Chao Phraya River. It is home to one of the world’s largest airports and yet it’s still a place where food and flowers are sold from wooden long-tail boats floating on the river.

Mobility around the city comes with ease. The SkyTrain has literally changed the face and dynamics of the city, but tourists are encouraged to be adventurous and jump on a TukTuk or Motorbike.

Bangkok is a city of contradictions, visit the oldest Chinatown in the whole world and explore high-rise, international neighbourhoods. Shop at a brand new mall, or try your bargaining skills at the vibrant Chatuchak Market. Eat at a street-vendor or food court, or graze at Michelin star restaurants.

Are you fan of nightlife and partying? Visit Soi 2 to 4, in Silom for the gay nightlife hot spot of Bangkok, where both locals and tourists flock to have a great time and mingle. There is also Sukhumvit Road, Sapan Kwai and Ramkamhaeng that host a great gay/nightlife atmosphere. Or head up to a rooftop bar and enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of this sprawling city. Come to one of the city’s music of dance festivals – like the White Party; or G-Circuit, during Songkran. Check out the Queens of Drag-race Thailand; who can be found at pop-up events across the city, or at the legendary Maggie Choos.

Bangkok is easily the most LGBT+ welcoming capital city in Asia. The slogan Mai Pen Rai (Thai for “no worries”), defines the friendliness and open mentality of all Thais and despite Bangkok being a metropolis, this welcoming, live and let live culture thrives here.

When to Visit Thailand

October to April is the tourist high-season. Over the summer months you’ll experience the rainy season and hot, hot, hot weather. But then again — you can also get bargain deals on tours and hotels.

If you plan your trip around some of the more interesting festivals and holidays (Loi Krathong, or the Lantern Festival, in October/November and Songkran in April), then you’re sure to have an amazing cultural experience. Songkran is extremely popular in Chiang Mai, though it’s also worth experiencing in Bangkok.

Thailand Tours & Trips

Thailand is a great destination because of its incredible diversity and options for every type of traveler. In the north, the jungles, forests and mountains make for great trekking and hiking adventures.

But the beaches and islands in the south offer plenty of warm-weather activities from SCUBA diving and snorkeling to beach parties and full moon festivals.

And then in the center of the country is Bangkok—a city sometimes skipped by travelers despite the incredible shopping, food and nightlife scenes (including a hopping gay/LGBT scene in the city). Here are some favorite places in Thailand for tourism:

Bangkok — The capital, it’s an incredible city with an extensive history as well as a busy and bustling city life. Visit Bangkok for shopping; big malls like the MBK Center, Siam Paragon, Terminal 21 and EmQuartier offer countless international and regional brands at great prices (especially during the sales). Bangkok is also a hub of gay nightlife in Asia.

Ayutthaya — The UNESCO World Heritage City is just a few short hours north of Bangkok and an easy day-trip from the capital. Once the capital of Siam, the old town now includes a historical park of hundreds of temples and archaeological sites.

Phuket — This island in the south may have a reputation as a tourist hub, but it doesn’t make it any less worth visiting. It’s the largest Thai island and has something for everyone, from the absurd nightlife at Patong Beach, to the historical old town of Phuket and then an ever-growing number of luxury hotels on private beaches and coves. It’s a good place to start a Thailand island adventure as most of the other islands are accessible by ferry from Phuket.

Koh Chang — An island in the north of the Gulf of Thailand (just off the coast from Trat and near to the border with Cambodia), Koh Chang is more off the beaten path than many other Thai beach destinations.

The island is home to amazing wildlife including mangrove forests and many coral reefs. It’s also a bit more quieter and secluded than other Thai islands. Lonely Beach is a backpacker hub with a regular nightlife and party scene, but you’ll also find resorts with private beaches and more romantic hotspots across Koh Chang.

LGBTQ – Gay Thailand Travel Guide

Bangkok regularly makes it to the top of the world’s and Asia’s best gay-friendly cities. The city is home to gay bars, clubs and tourist-friendly gay saunas that operate every day and night of the week.

Gay-friendly hotels and plenty of nightlife activities and regular, monthly parties make it a fun and friendly destination. Each April during the Songkran water festival, Bangkok hosts one of Asia’s largest gay circuit parties, the GCircuit .

5 Gay Travel Thailand Tips

Traveling as a LGBTQ+ individual in Thailand can be an enjoyable and inclusive experience. Here are five tips to help you make the most of your trip:

1. Research LGBTQ+ Friendly Areas: While Thailand is generally LGBTQ+ friendly, some areas are more welcoming than others. Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya are known for their LGBTQ+ scenes, with numerous gay bars, clubs, and accommodations. Research these areas to find the most inclusive places to stay and visit.

2. Respect Local Customs: Thailand is a conservative country in some regards, so it’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. While LGBTQ+ travelers are generally accepted, public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. Be mindful of cultural norms, especially in rural areas.

3. Stay in LGBTQ+ Friendly Accommodations: Many hotels, resorts, and guesthouses in popular tourist destinations like Bangkok and Phuket are LGBTQ+ friendly. Look for LGBTQ+ welcoming accommodations or even specifically gay-owned and operated options. These places are more likely to provide a comfortable and inclusive environment.

4. Connect with Local LGBTQ+ Communities: Thailand has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community, and you can find information on LGBTQ+ events, gatherings, and organizations through social media and online forums. Connecting with local LGBTQ+ communities can provide you with valuable insights and recommendations for LGBTQ+ friendly places to visit.

5. Stay Informed about Local Laws: While Thailand is relatively progressive regarding LGBTQ+ rights, it’s still essential to stay informed about local laws and regulations. Homosexuality is legal, but some discriminatory practices may exist in certain areas. Knowing your rights and being aware of any potential issues can help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

5 Best LGBTQ-Friendly Places to Visit in Thailand

Thailand has several gay-friendly cities and beaches that offer vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes and welcoming atmospheres. Here are five popular places to visit:

1. Bangkok : Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, is a major LGBTQ+ hub with a wide range of gay bars, clubs, and LGBTQ+ events. Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 are known for their gay nightlife, and you’ll find numerous LGBTQ+ friendly accommodations throughout the city. Don’t miss the annual Bangkok Gay Pride Parade, which is a colorful and festive celebration of diversity.

2. Phuket : Phuket is one of Thailand’s most famous LGBTQ+ friendly beach destinations. Patong Beach , in particular, is known for its gay-friendly atmosphere and vibrant nightlife. You can find gay bars, cabaret shows, and LGBTQ+ events here. Phuket Pride is an annual event that draws visitors from all over the world.

3. Chiang Mai : Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, is a charming city with a growing LGBTQ+ scene. Nimmanhaemin Road and the Night Bazaar area have LGBTQ+ friendly bars and cafes. Chiang Mai Pride is a local LGBTQ+ event that takes place in February and features parades and parties.

4. Pattaya: Pattaya, located on the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. Jomtien Complex in Chonburi is a hub for gay bars and clubs, and Pattaya Pride is a significant LGBTQ+ event. The city also offers beautiful beaches, shopping, and entertainment options.

5. Koh Samui: Koh Samui, an island in the Gulf of Thailand, has a relaxed and LGBTQ+ friendly atmosphere. Chaweng Beach is the main hub for nightlife and LGBTQ+ friendly venues. While not as large as some of the other LGBTQ+ scenes in Thailand, Koh Samui offers a more tranquil and romantic setting.

Remember to enjoy your trip and embrace the beautiful culture and landscapes that Thailand has to offer. While it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings, Thailand is generally a welcoming and inclusive destination for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Thailand Hotel Deals

Here’s the thing about Thailand: the country has an incredible reputation as one of smiles and friendliness and that kind of kindness permeates the hospitality industry—especially the Thailand hotels and resorts. You can regularly find great deals on one-of-a-kind properties and resorts, especially when booking your holidays on the shoulder seasons (just after Songkran can be especially good for cost-saving).

In Bangkok, plan to stay in a luxury hotel if you’ve got the budget for it. They’re world-class and in the skyscrapers, they offer amazing panoramic views over the Bangkok skyline. Even if you don’t stay in a luxury Bangkok hotel, make sure you visit some of the rooftop hotel bars—there’s nothing like them!

Gay travel

Thailand – gay oasis in Asia

Thailand – one of the most wonderful and enigmatic country at South-East Asia. Until 1932, the country bore a name "Siam". The old name, Siam, is still often used in literature, media, Internet and everyday life as a synonym for Thailand. In addition, Siam is often called the "land of smiles," and this metaphor for the Thais is not accidental - they can smile in 13 ways.

Every year thousands gay tourists visit that paradise. Gay travelling is developed in Thailand thus much so many who have visited here back in the Land of Smiles again and again. Trip in the gay Thailand may turn into the most exciting adventure of your life.

Thailand's economy

National currency is Thai Baht. Baht can be exchanged into US dollars, euro and other currencies  (most of South East Asian countries, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan and etc.) directly at financial organizations inside country. There are a lot of currency exchangers, especially in major tourist centers (Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and others). Also, there are plenty ATM serve the main types of bank cards (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro and others).

Attention ! All Thai ATMs for cashing from foreign card surcharge up to 150 Baht.

The basis of the Thai economy is agriculture industry which provides 10% of GDP and employs half of the country population. There is a misconception that tourism is the mainstay of the economy. But it’s not: the tourist industry approximate occupies only the fifth-sixth place for attraction of budget revenues.

State and Society

Thailand's state system is a constitutional monarchy. But the king, according to the Constitution, has no political power. However Thai people are very fond and respect their king and at most critical moments the last decision taken by the king. A Head of the Thai Government is Prime Minister who must be elected after democratic elections. But the present  Prime Minister has come after a military coup in 2014.

Basis of Thai society is social estates. Religion, traditions and customs are extremely important in the life of Thai people.

Travelling in Thailand

Choosing Siam as the country to travel you can always rely on excellent and cognitive rest. All opportunities for that are established long ago there. It's not surprising that Thailand in 2018 was visited by 38 million foreign tourists.

For lovers of history and culture we recommend Bangkok, Ayutthaya (an ancient capital of Siam) and the northern cities – Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Sukhothai. For lovers of sea and beaches – Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Chang, Krabi coast. For "party" people approach the capital, Phuket and Pattaya. For lovers of asian exotics you can choose any destination in the country.

Thailand is very easy for travelling. You can explore country with any kind of transportation. Lot of airlines work here so tourist can take a plane to many thai cities and countries. Recently in Thailand has opened a several low-cost airlines that make trip very affordable. Finally, hundreds of bus routes open up to any place in the country of smiles.

Gay life in Thailand

Perhaps there is no other country like Thailand where LGBT people are full members of society, not only by the Constitution, but also in fact. Each homosexual in Thailand can position themselves openly and thus to feel a full-fledged citizen. Usually gays and lesbians  don't conceal their true sexuality from parents, neighbors, co-workers. Boys and girls build up same-sex couples and never tell bullshit tales how they rent an apartment with a friend in order to save money. But it's rare to find outside two happy guys who are going take the hands, hug or kiss each others.

What is the reason for such a peaceful neighborhood LGBT and other people in Thailand? After all, Thailand may not be called so progressive for LGBT rights country like Sweden, the Netherlands or Norway. Based on our observations, we found at least an explanation for that phenomenon.

It‘s a traditional Thai tolerance. The centuries-old tradition of the country, based on Buddhist precepts, has assisted to the fact that Thais relate to others with understanding and acceptance. Differently from other religions, Buddhism teaches people to respect a way of whom the next person is. Such peculiarity of Buddhism has manifested most fully in Thailand. Indeed, the main religion of China or Burma is Buddhism also, however, noone confirms society loyalty to gay-community in these countries.

The society doesn’t put a curse mark on homosexuality. Teenager realizing his sexuality perceives himself as a normal person and accept who he is. In the end, the Thai person naturally comes to that moment when he can say openly to himself and others: "I'm gay!"

Thai gay community features

Everyone who has visited Thailand not just once saw transvestites calmly walking on the streets or the guys who openly show them sexuality. Especially, that usually seen in the large tourist centers (Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket). It seems that things are quite normal here, and gay people feel comfortable and free. But is it really true?

Having lived here completely for a while, we have understood that it's not so easy at all. Difficulties regard to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Its are absent practically. A level acceptance of homosexual by society is directly opposite to gay basic legal rights. Homosexuality, of course, is not considered as a criminal offence, but gay rights haven’t got a subsequent development. For example,  transgenders are not able to change them gender de jure.

Gay travel in Thailand

Land of Smiles has been the premier gay destination in Southeast Asia for many years. It offers you a huge selection of hotels, guesthouses and resorts to choose from. Great restaurants, cafes, hotels, saunas, spas and shopping await you, and nothing is better than a relaxing Thai massage after a day of touring the many exotic temples and shopping centers.

Queer culture in the Land of Smiles is developed in several cities, which are main tourist centers at the same time. Certainly, the main gay center Thailand is capital city, Bangkok . In Bangkok, there are several gay areas where gay night clubs, massage salons, restaurants, pubs and go-go bars are focused. The world-famous gay sauna Babylon and nightclub DJ Station located at Bangkok's Silom gay area.

Less stormy blue life rages in Pattaya  city which is in two hours drive from Bangkok. Many years Pattaya occupies the first place in a rating "The best sex resort destination in the world". Probably, Pattaya should be proclaimed as the best gay resort destination as well? Time will show.

Entire gay areas were formed In Pattaya where about a hundred spots are concentrated. And Pattaya has a gay beach, where is possible not only to sunbathe but also to find ton of interesting for guys. The world-famous Tiffany-show and Alcazar show are in Pattaya as well.

The second largest city in Thailand is Chiang Mai. It's located on the north of Thailand. People on the Thai North are especially kind and sympathetic. Besides, the city is surrounded by tremendous beautiful mountains. The most romantic date in your life, probably, happens in this city. Chiang Mai is undoubtedly worthy to be included in the gay travel.

Is Bangkok Safe For Gay Travellers?

Did you know that Thailand is ranked as the most gay-friendly country in Asia ?

Homosexuality has been legal in Thailand since 1956. The military accepts citizens regardless of sexual orientation, and in a recent poll, 88.7% of Thais were shown to be accepting of the LGBT community. In 2022, a Partnership Registration Bill for LGBT couples was approved that allows same-sex couples to be recognized as life partners and provides them with the same rights and privileges as straight couples including the option to adopt children.

Bangkok hosted the Thailand Pride Parade in 2022 as the first formal Pride in the city’s history. The capital also hosts the popular Songkran Gay Circuit Party and Asia Circuit Festival .

I’ve traveled to Thailand six times and am always amazed at how friendly and welcoming locals are to the LGBT community. I think Thailand’s famous Drag Cabaret culture is indicative of why the country is considered one of the most trans-friendly destinations on earth.

9 things you should know before visiting Bangkok

Austin Bush

Make the most of your time in bustling Bangkok with our 9 insider tips © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images

I moved to Bangkok in 1999, a time when most visitors to Thailand reluctantly did a night in this megacity before beelining to an island or the north. Synonymous with traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl, the Thai capital was largely seen as an unwanted but obligatory stopover.

Decades later, things have changed and Bangkok is now the destination of choice for many visitors – with good reason. Easier to get around and cleaner than ever, with a vibrant eating and drinking scene that caters to just about every budget and an enviable spread of intriguing sights and fantastic-value shopping, the city has more to offer than ever before.

Yet like any big city, Bangkok has its quirks and surprises. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Find out what you should know in advance about Thailand , including important cultural, religious and legal issues, etiquette and health.

Bangkok is easier to get around than ever

Bangkok used to be synonymous with traffic jams and air pollution. The jams still happen, but the good news is that the city’s public transportation system has grown immensely. The various above and underground rail networks currently unite 10 different lines – with more in the works – and 192 stations, including trains linking both of Bangkok’s international airports and the city center.

On top of this, taxis remain ubiquitous and cheap – though subject to the issues that make the city’s traffic so infamous – while quirky public transportation systems such as the city’s river and canal taxis provide a slow but steady (and scenic) way to get around.

Crime happens but it's rare

Thailand has a low crime rate and is generally considered a safe country. Bangkok suffers from the same type of violent crimes as any big city, but anecdotally, is considered a safe place. Apart from occasional bag snatching and theft, the most dangerous thing in the city is its traffic (Thailand’s roads are some of the deadliest of any country). Solo women travelers and locals I’ve spoken to also report feeling safe in the city.

A particular Bangkok annoyance is scams directed at tourists. These typically involve taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters, or tuk-tuk drivers and/or well-dressed, English-speaking men who appear out of nowhere offering free tours that inevitably lead to dodgy gem shops or tailors. The good news is that most of these situations are easy to spot and relatively low-pressure; if something seems off, simply walk away.

It’s also worth noting that Bangkok’s police don’t have a great reputation. Steer clear of them unless you really need help.

Close up shot of young Asian woman having freshly made authentic Thai food in a Thai restaurant

Street food isn’t the only good food

Western chefs and food media have been raving about Bangkok’s street food for more than a decade. And it’s a fun, often delicious way to eat. But if you relegated yourself to street food alone, you’d miss the entire scope of Bangkok’s cuisine.

Supplement those streetside noodles with meals at the charming, decades-old restaurants in the old town – these are the places that get the most praise in the Thai-language media. In Bangkok’s newer districts, such as along Thanon Sukhumvit, consider a Japanese meal – the city is home to one of the largest populations of Japanese people outside of Japan.

If your budget allows, consider a splurge restaurant. While the rest of the world was obsessing over its street food, Bangkok's dining scene went in the opposite direction and today is home to several modern, cutting-edge upscale restaurants.

Sometimes it's too hot to handle

Bangkok is one of the hottest capital cities in the world, with an average mean temperature of 29°C (84°F). This heat is compounded by intense humidity and the urban environment, which reflects and retains heat, meaning the city often feels much, much ( much ) hotter. April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average daily max temperature of 35°C (96 ° F) and during the “winter” in December and January, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C (68°F).

All of this means you shouldn't try to cover too much ground on foot – an already difficult task given the city’s lack of pedestrian infrastructure. If you do walk, learn the technique of regularly ducking into air-conditioned malls, hotel lobbies and 7-Elevens to cool off.

Likewise, pack light clothing, but remember – Thais are conservative when it concerns showing skin in public and Bangkok is not the beach.

Bangkok is a queer-friendly city

LGBTIQ+ people are made to feel welcome in Bangkok, which is generally considered Asia’s most queer-friendly city. The epicenter of the gay scene is Thanon Silom, especially in and around Soi 4, which is ostensibly Asia’s biggest queer nightlife area.

Thankfully, it looks like this queer-friendly vibe will extend to legislation. In 2023, the Thai parliament passed draft bills on same-sex marriage, which are expected to become laws, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

Keep in mind that public displays of affection between people of any gender are frowned upon in Thailand.

There are better budget options than Khao San Road

If you want to be based in the world’s most famous backpacker strip – and all that that entails – book a bed or room on Thanon Khao San, generally known as Khao San Road. It’s lively and fun, and provides easy access to the city’s old town.

But having moved slightly upscale in recent decades, Khao San Road no longer represents the best value area to stay in Bangkok. And with loud bars and a boozy vibe, it’s definitely not the most peaceful place to stay.

If you want to have access to the backpacker amenities but don’t want the noise and hassle, consider staying in the streets nearby, such as Thanon Rambutri or Thanon Phra Athit.

Monsoon season brings sudden surprises

During the annual monsoon, from approximately May to October, Bangkok’s streets occasionally turn into rivers. During this time of year, don’t be surprised if you have to camp out on an elevated street corner or in a 7-Eleven until the waters recede.

Malls are part of city life

While shopping malls are a dying breed in much of the west, they’re thriving in Bangkok. The city is home to some of the most over-the-top shopping centers in the world, which in contemporary Bangkok, have a dual function as (conveniently air-conditioned) social centers. Thais gather at the city’s more than 500 shopping centers to chat, eat, take selfies and occasionally make purchases, and so should you.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival

Bangkok essentially shuts down during the Thai New Year

Every year around April, Bangkok grinds to a halt during Thai New Year, known as Songkran or the water festival. The tradition has its origins in the cleansing role of water, but these days it essentially means that Bangkok becomes ground zero to a multi-day, raucous water battle.

Whether you're into it or not, you’ll be splashed with water and/or smeared with baby powder. Don’t even attempt stepping outside your door with your Sunday best on and don’t expect your favorite restaurant, or that museum or monument to be open (shopping centers, inevitably, will be operating). Discover more about Bangkok's festivals and seasonal attractions in our guide to the best time to visit the city .

Weed isn’t exactly legal in Bangkok

In June 2022, marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still many restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not legal and is not recommended.

Yes, there's a sex industry, but it's easy to avoid

“One Night in Bangkok” is indeed a reality. But if you steer clear of the main red-light zones at night – namely Thanon Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy – it's likely you won’t even witness this side of the city.

Gay Moscow Moscow City Guide

Moscow invariably hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And though the Russian capital isn’t particularly LGBTQ-friendly (Vladimir Putin’s annual shirtless photoshoot notwithstanding), we don’t think you should miss out on the most intriguing of Moscow points of interest because of it. Homosexuality is legal, although a vaguely-worded 2013 law prohibits the promotion of ‘non-traditional’ relationships. As such, gay travellers are advised against overt displays of their sexuality. That said, the vast majority of visits remain trouble-free, even for visitors who frequent the city’s less-than-secret gay bar and club scene.

The best hotels in Moscow

The historic exterior of the Hotel Metropol , facing the internationally-celebrated Bolshoi Theatre and close to many of the other main things to do in Moscow, is nothing compared to its sumptuous interiors. Its decor recalls the no-expense-spared philosophy of the grand imperial era that climaxed at the turn of the 1900s. Marble detailing, decorative plasterwork, and a breathtaking stained-glass roof enclosing the vast dining hall is the result. Though the hotel is large – with 365 rooms, there is a different bed for every day of the year – each room is uniquely shaped in the art deco style, ensuring a personal feel. The rooms at the Russo-Balt Hotel are also individually decorated, but in the earlier art nouveau style of swirling floral motifs, blown-glass chandeliers, and richly carved woods. Stand out features include a pillow menu and breakfasts which incorporate produce from the hotel’s private farm.

Rooms at the PR Myasnitsky Boutique Hotel have a more playful, contemporary look, combining bare brick with sleek pieces of modern furniture, all within the large public spaces of the nineteenth-century edifice. Each features a small fridge and capsule coffee machine. As a self-declared design hotel, rest assured that any stay at Akvarel Hotel will be an elegant one, with every detail considered from the moment you step across the threshold. The chic mid-century design flows effortlessly from the lobby bar and summer terrace to the rooms, each of which has been custom-styled with fanciful furnishings. A little further away, on the Third Ring Road in the Basmanny district, is the three-star Boutique Hotel Baumanskiy . The modern building features quirky in-room works of art and the offer of complimentary coffees at reception. The carpeted interiors give this stay a homely ambience, which marries well with breakfast – which is served in your room.

Bangkok Takes Its Place on the Venice Stage

To promote its fourth biennale, the city has mounted an exhibit in a 17th century palazzo on the Grand Canal.

Colorful embroidered panels hang from a black metal structure in a field of tall grass.

By David Belcher

Bangkok, called the Venice of the East by European missionaries and sailors who fell under the city’s spell centuries ago, will celebrate its fourth biennale this fall , but not before using the 60th Venice Biennale to showcase itself as that other city of canals, culture and art.

“The Spirits of Maritime Crossing,” an exhibition sponsored by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation, will run from Saturday to Nov. 24 and will be housed in the newly restored 17th-century Palazzo Smith Mangilli Valmarana on the Grand Canal, which seems fitting.

Much as Venice has long been a showcase, indoors and outdoors, for displaying art during its biennale, the Bangkok Biennale uses spaces including in warehouses, art galleries and its Buddhist and Hindu temples that dot the Chao Phraya River, which snakes through the city like its own canal.

“In 2017 when we started this idea of a biennale, we looked at Venice as a model and even announced the Bangkok Biennale Foundation in Venice that year,” Apinan Poshyananda, chief executive and artistic director of Bangkok Art Biennale and curator of “The Spirits of Maritime Crossing” exhibition, said in a recent phone interview. “This idea of water connects both cities, and we want to make artists aware of our biennale and move outside of Bangkok with our brand.”

The Bangkok Biennale attracted more than 3.5 million visitors in its first three incarnations (2018, 2020 and 2022) and included over 300 artists, with an emphasis on creating visibility for artists from the Global South. It returns Oct. 24 and runs through Feb. 25.

The theme of water — how it connects and separates us — courses through “The Spirits of Maritime Crossing” and its 40 artworks (paintings, mixed media, sculptures and video installations) by 15 artists.

It will have as its centerpiece a 34-minute video installation of the same name , played on an continuous loop throughout the biennale, with the Serbian artist and performer Marina Abramovi c and the Thai dancer Pichet Klunchun depicting a wandering spirit traveling to new lands as a way to connect East and West, Bangkok and Venice.

And the idea of connections and crossings take on various meanings in the exhibition. The movement of people plays a huge role in the embroidered artwork of the Thai artist Jakkai Siributr, 54. A scaled-down version of his large installation “There’s No Place,” (2020) will be housed in one of the rooms. It is a series of embroidered panels depicting the displacement of people.

“I had an opportunity to travel to the Thailand-Myanmar border to a village where about 20 years ago there had been an influx of the Shan ethnic minority from Myanmar,” Siributr said in a video interview from Chiang Mai, Thailand. “I conducted a storytelling workshop, but we told their stories through embroidery rather than orally.”

But he took it a step further by asking the Thai people about how the influx of immigrants affected them.

“I invited the public to participate and work on the same artwork, which was a way to create a dialogue,” Siributr said. “The Shan community depicted their hopes and dreams and their history through colored yarn. For example, there’s one panel of a dream home of a Shan youth, and someone local added a background of trees.”

Migration — and its impact — is also at the center of a video installation by the artist Priyadeetha Dia, whose ancestors migrated from India to Malaysia in the early 20th century. “The Sea is a Blue Memory,” commissioned by the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kerala, India, in 2022, takes viewers on a journey that feels immediate in this era of mass migration. It’s also a virtually undocumented bit of history for the artist.

“In my research into rubber plantations, looking mostly at images that depict the laborers’ day to day life, what I found that was missing was the journey to Malay,” said Pria, 31, who lives in Singapore. “There are no images or documentation of the journeys on boats. I felt that was something to build a narrative on.”

What came out of that was a video installation, with sound design by Tini Aliman , also Singaporean, which runs just over 10 minutes and will be on a continual loop for the run of the Venice Biennale.

“The work was produced using C.G.I. [computer-generated imagery], and I thought of the journey through different notions of space and time,” she explained. “You have a sense of floating around in space. We also wanted to think about sound through sonic waves. It captures the sounds of water, ripples and echoes under the sea.”

The other artists represented in “The Spirits of Maritime Crossing” come from Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar. For Poshyananda, it’s the perfect fit for the 60th Venice Biennale and its theme of “Stranieri Ovunque,” or “Foreigners Everywhere.”

“When the Europeans came to Siam, they were fascinated by the houses on stilts on the canals and the water,” he said. “And now we’re showing Southeast Asian artists in a neoclassical palazzo with murals and décor that depict images from as far away as Africa and Asia, and even Greek mythology. We’re among many spirits on this grand body of water.”
