The M4 is a motorway in the United Kingdom that connects London and South West England. It runs from London to South Wales and it is a crucial part of the English transport network.
The M4 was first proposed in 1927 and construction began in 1958. It was completed in 1971, running from London to Reading, Berkshire and later extending to South Wales.
The M4 is one of the major roads in the UK and a significant part of the economy. The M4 has been upgraded in certain sections and currently consists of 146 miles (235 km) of motorway.
The M4 is one of the safest motorways in the UK. According to the Department of Transport (DfT), the M4 had a collision rate of just 0.41 per million vehicle kilometres between 2017-2018. This is lower than the UK major-road average of 0.71.

Live M4 travel updates as heavy traffic causes widespread delays across Wales
People are making their way home after the half-term break and bank holiday weekend

There are widespread delays across several major Welsh roads including the M4 as people return home from the half-term break and the bank holiday weekend. Cardiff is also expected to be very busy later as thousands of football fans head to the city Wales' crunch match against Ukraine. You can follow all the build-up here.
Traffic Wales is warning of delays along several stretches of the M4, including through Newport, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Queues are around five miles long on the A40 eastbound between St Clears and Carmarthen.
There are also delays on the M4 eastbound from junction 44 Lon Las to junction 38 Margam, and on the Newport section heading west., and on the A55 in north Wales. Dyed Powys Police has said there are currently delays on the A477 in Pembrokeshire. It is because a vehicle has broken down between Red Roses and Kilgetty.

A statement said: "Please be patient and take an alternative route if possible, or plan extra time into your journey." Earlier on Sunday, South Wales Police warned that Cardiff will be "extremely busy".
RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: “The fact the bank holidays coincide with the end of half-term in many places has the potential to put some extra pressure on the road network, so planning a journey carefully is important to beat the worst of any queues."
It is not just in Wales where there are delays, Highways England say around 50 minutes are being added to journeys on the M5 as people head home from Devon and Cornwall.

M4 delays continue
Stop-start holiday traffic continues to be reported on the M4 eastbound from J48 (Hendy) to J41 (Baglan).
The travel time is currently around 45 minutes.
Slow traffic on the A40
There are reports of slow traffic due to an accident on A40 eastbound near B4298.
Take caution if you're travelling in the area.
Delays of nearly an hour heading back from Cornwall
If you are heading back to Wales from Devon and Cornwall there are delays of 50 minutes.
Highways England says: "If you are travelling on the M5 northbound this afternoon please be aware there are long delays of 50 minutes above normal journey times due to heavy congestion between J28 and J23."

Transport for Wales is reminding football fans that Cardiff Queen Street Station will remain open today but that the taxi rank at Cardiff Central station closed at 2pm.
Thunderstorm warning for M4 corridor
There is a yellow weather warning in place for parts of south Wales this afternoon.
Traffic Wales are warning motorists to be careful driving in any heavy rain or thunderstorms.
Stop-start traffic between Llanelli and Baglan
Holiday traffic is being blamed for the delays on the M4 eastbound from junction 48 Hendy to junction 41 Baglan.
Traffic monitors are showing that it is stop-start the whole way along the stretch.
Overturned caravan causes severe delays on M4 near Bristol
Not in Wales but might affect people heading back here on the M4
All lanes are now open on the westbound carriageway between J18 and J19 - near Tormarton approaching Bristiol.
An overturned caravan has been cleared but there is five miles of congestion and 45 minute delays remain on the approach.
Pembrokeshire road re-opens
Dyfed Powys Police has said that the A477 between Red Roses and Kilgetty has now reopened after a vehicle broke down in the area.
A statement thanked motorists for their patience.

Traffic monitors are showing that it is busy in Powys too.
There is slow traffic on the A458 at Castle Caereinion and at Welshpool.
The delays are being blamed on 'holiday traffic'.
Further congestion alert in Carmarthenshire
This is the scene on the M4 eastbound between junction 48 Hendy and junction 45 Ynysforgan.
Traffic Wales says motorists should allow additional travel time.
Ticketless fans told not to travel
Welsh football fans have been warned not to invade the pitch if Wales qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years this Sunday, amid pleas for supporters without tickets to avoid travelling to Cardiff.
