Nurses from the Millennial generation now have their own reality show, thanks to MTV.

“Scrubbing In,” premiering Oct. 24, follows a crew of young “travel nurses” – all from various parts of the country – assigned to work under short-term contracts at an understaffed hospital in California’s Orange County for 13 weeks.

The series will show the challenges and rewards experienced by nine nurses as they deal with ill patients and their families. And because this is MTV, it will  focus just as much (if not more) on their lives outside of the hospital.  They party, take shots and blow off steam as only 20-year-olds can. In fact, the trailer makes the series look more like “Nurses Gone Wild” than “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Tyrice of MTV’s “Scrubbing In”

“At the end of the day, our professional life is our priority, but we do have fun,” says  Tyrice , the lone African American in the cast and one of three nursing veterans on the show who has participated in the “travel” program before. Below, she tells us exactly what a travel nurse is.

The Texas native says having cameras at the hospital has not been as intrusive as one might think. “We really don’t know that production is really there,” Tyrice told us at the TCA Summer Press Tour. “They’re pretty much like flies on the wall. They don’t interfere with our professional work.”

She added: “I think everyone at the hospital has been pretty accepting and welcoming of the process, because they also want to shed light on what nurses actually do.”

“Scrubbing In” premieres Thursday, October 24 at 10 p.m. Watch the trailer below.

When “Scrubbing In,” MTV’s new reality series about travel nurses, airs its first episode Thursday night, it will have a formidable act to follow in terms of media outrage and water-cooler gossip.

In short, it will have to top its own trailer.

All the general public has seen of the 10-episode series, which follows nine nurses from different parts of the country as they immerse themselves in Orange County life, is a short montage and a few clips on MTV.com. But those snippets have already ignited a war of words online, as some are lobbying to have the show taken off the air while others praise it as a noble effort to spotlight a heroic profession.

A Change.org petition, which had gathered 13,710 signatures as of Wednesday, calls the show an “obvious dramatization” that upholds “the senseless sexual objectification that we as nurses, both male and female, continue to endure.” The Canadian Nurses Assn., among others, has gotten behind the campaign, with that group’s president writing in an open letter that the show will demean the work of real nurses with “typical ‘reality’ show fodder.”

Members of the “Scrubbing In” team have a quick response to those critics: Watch the program first, then make up your mind.

“I guess in any profession, there’s just a lot of strong personalities, and people tend to judge before they actually see what the television show is all about,” said Chelsey Ferri, who lives in Pennsylvania and spent the summer filming in Costa Mesa and thereabouts. “We all are experienced nurses. I don’t necessarily know that those people know that.”

So what do those scandalous promotional materials show? The main trailer for “Scrubbing In” begins with a quick shot of cast members leaping nude into a swimming pool, followed by a voiceover declaring, “They’re hellraisers!” Over the next minute, it features shots of the nurses drinking, flirting, arguing and occasionally uttering torrents of bleeped-out oaths.

Maybe it’s not what Florence Nightingale had in mind. But in fairness, the trailer also shows the nurses hard at work assisting patients, with one cast member, at the end, wiping tears off her cheeks and declaring, “I love what I do. I love being a nurse.”

Poignancy, superficiality

Neither the show’s supporters nor detractors are likely to change their opinions much after viewing the first episode — at least, if the final cut is similar to the rough one provided to the Daily Pilot last week.

Some scenes show the businesslike end of nursing, as two cast members have trouble securing work licenses upon arrival in California. Other scenes sketch out the characters’ pasts — one male nurse talks poignantly about his brother’s death after a spinal cord injury — and show their excitement at moving into temporary digs at The Cape, an apartment complex near South Coast Plaza.

As for the rest: Within the first few minutes, one nurse discusses her breast implants, while another declares to the camera, “Hospitals are just like on television. Doctors [bleep] nurses, nurses [bleep] doctors. Everyone’s crazy.” Later scenes involve dialogue about vibrators and a profanity-laden argument at the Cape.

However irreverent the show may be at times, Mark Cronin, the executive producer and co-president of the production company 51 Minds Entertainment, sees it as higher-minded than the typical reality offering.

“My intent with the show is to tell an entertaining story about a group of people that you haven’t seen in reality television yet,” said Cronin, whose company partnered with MTV on the program. “And if I had to generalize, I’d say that, in general, reality televison casts are not super-professional. They’re not highly educated, usually.

“There’s a lot of redneck television. There’s a lot of all kinds of reality television. But in general, you don’t get to see really well-educated, well-spoken, ambitious, hardworking — these words are not usually used to describe reality television casts.”

Cronin, who conceived the show last year, approached Aya Healthcare, a San Diego-based company that provides travel nurses for hospitals. (Travel nursing developed in response to nursing shortages.) Aya perused its database, and nine finalists — five from Pennsylvania, two from Louisiana, one from Texas and one from San Diego — made the cut.

According to Cronin, the Orange County setting was a happy coincidence. Western Medical Center and Coastal Communities Hospital, the two Santa Ana locations where the cast members worked, were in need of nurses over the summer. (Officials from both hospitals, citing an agreement with MTV, declined to comment on the show.)

Cast members subjected themselves to filming six days a week, with cameras following them both in and out of the hospital. Free time, at least early on, wasn’t a concern; brief scenes in the first episode show the nurses boating in Newport Beach and congregating at local restaurants and clubs.

Fighting for nurses’ honor

Viewers of that episode, which ends with the profanity-laced blowup at The Cape, may wonder if sirens — other than the ambulance kind — ever got called during filming. According to Costa Mesa police records, officers apparently showed up at the complex at least once for a “Scrubbing In”-related incident. A call log from July 1 contains a reference to loud subjects in the pool, with “reality MTV show” noted below.

Police Lt. Bryan Glass said the filming did not pose major problems and that “nothing out of the ordinary” happened at the complex. A spokeswoman for The Cape declined to comment.

It’s not the police blotter, though, where the show’s drama has played out so far. Milka Stojanovic, a nursing student from Wisconsin, launched the Change.org petition after channel-flipping with her family and catching the “Scrubbing In” trailer midway through. The perceived sexualization of the nurses on the show, she said, inspired her to take action.

“It didn’t register until after it was over that this was going to be a show about nurses,” Stojanovic wrote in an email. “We were all shocked and appalled — me especially. I went to bed that night thinking about it and woke up just as frustrated that next morning.”

Others have leaped to the show’s defense. Sarah Wengert, a contributor to TravelNursingBlogs.com , wrote that the furor over “Scrubbing In” reminded her of similar early reactions to shows such as “Jersey Shore” and”Buckwild.” The “silver lining” of the controversy, she said, is that the show may inspire discussions about travel nursing itself, which she called an unsung profession.

“Wouldn’t it be great if more people could learn about the industrious, adaptable, amazing nurses who work on travel assignments?” Wengert wrote.

Of course, all that back-and-forth may become moot — or part of the fun — if “Scrubbing In” proves a hit. Cronin said his team may extend the show to a second season if audiences respond to it. The focus may be on the same nurses and hospitals or an entirely new slate.

And Aya has already proven that a nursing reality series can resonate with people: Its 2006 online show, “13 Weeks,” followed a similar premise and won a media award from the American Academy of Nursing.

Even if “Scrubbing In” ends after one season, Michelle Battisti, who works her regular job at a trauma unit in Pittsburgh, brought back some choice memories from filming.

“Orange County is very different from Pittsburgh,” she said. “The weather in Orange County is perfect, 75 and sunny and no humidity, whereas the summers in Pittsburgh can be very humid and hot. And we definitely don’t have any beaches in Pennsylvania.”

Nine years after launching “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County,” MTV is back in town with its new reality series about nine traveling nurses who came to the county to work and play for the summer.

The nurses, collectively and individually, say they hope “Scrubbing In” will put nursing in a positive light and encourage young people to take up the career. Whether MTV grants that wish is, of course, another matter.

“We want to show what real nurses do,” said Chelsey, 23, one of five nurses who came out together from the Pittsburgh area. “It’s an amazing, exhausting, fulfilling profession.”

Yet they admit that they also enjoy blowing off steam after work and generally act like (mostly) single twentysomethings. “We also have an outside life,” says Heather, 26. “But so does everybody.”

The key is in the balance.

“You never let your personal life affect your professional life,” said Chris, 29.

All of the nurses work for Aya Healthcare, a San Diego-based company that provides hospitals with nurses on a temporary basis.

Chelsey (as is reality-show tradition, last names are checked at the door) is joined by Pittsburgh colleagues Heather; Nikki, 26; Crystal, 26; and Michelle, 26, who were picked as a group to work at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Four other Aya nurses were brought in to round out the group, and certainly to add some diversity to the crowd of white, straight women, one of whom (Chelsey) is married.

There’s Tyrice, 28, an African American woman from the Dallas area; Fernando, 27, a gay Latino man, from El Paso, Texas; Adrian, 26, from San Diego; and Chris, who hails from a small town in northeast Louisiana. Adrian and Chris are both straight white men. Chris brought along his German shepherd dog, Major. Adrian had an even better add-on for a reality show: an on-again, off-again girlfriend within easy driving distance.

The second group was assigned to work at Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana.

All nine nurses were put up at the Cape Apartments in Costa Mesa, just down the street from South Coast Plaza. They roomed two to an apartment, except for Adrian, who lived by himself. Traveling nurses typically get housing as part of their arrangement, as well as a car. In this case, the rides were not reality-show luxury vehicles.

“We got Corollas, baby,” Tyrice said. “With cloth seats.”

In a group interview a few weeks before the show’s Thursday premiere, the cast sat down to discuss their three-month experience in Orange County. They loved the weather, the trips to Catalina and Palm Springs and Glen Ivy Hot Springs, but what they really wanted to talk about were their jobs: how nice the people were to work with, how good the hospitals were, how much they enjoy nursing.

But a promo that came out for the show shortly afterward raised a fuss among some other nurses, who complained that “Scrubbing In” looked like it was going to portray nurses as a bunch of hard-drinking revelers.

Aya even came to the cast’s defense with a press release:

“The featured travel nurses represent a new generation of nurses who have recently entered the workforce,” the company wrote. “They are highly trained and deeply passionate about nursing. Six of the ‘Scrubbing In’ travel nurses have Level 1 trauma center ICU experience. A Level 1 trauma center treats the most critically ill patients and requires the highest skilled ICU nurses. Two of the nurses are experienced Emergency Room travelers and have multiple assignments with Aya Healthcare under their belt. One of the featured nurses is a floor nurse with an exceptional bedside manner.”

“The show is highlighting young professionals,” Nikki said. “We want kids in high school to watch and think, maybe, ‘Hey, nursing is for me.’”

But this is MTV, after all, and if the show’s premiere episode, which I previewed, is any indication, the work side of the work-play equation will get much less of the show’s attention.

In the first episode, the work is largely confined to problems with Heather’s paperwork and a disagreement between Tyrice and Chris that blows sky high when they get back home. There is drinking, boating, bathing suits, fussing about relationships left behind and giggling discussions about who seems most attractive.

As for blowback on any of their behavior, cast members aren’t worried. They know what they signed up for, and they don’t have any regrets. No one feels their behavior was affected much by the presence of the cameras, nor do they think anything they did will embarrass them too much.

“My philosophy is, I wouldn’t do anything away from my parents that I wouldn’t do in front of them,” Chris said.

MTV to Debut Nurse Reality Show: Nurse Nation

nures nation reality show

‘Nurse Nation’ is a new docu-series that follows nine twenty-something travel nurses all assigned to work at a new hospital in a brand new city for 13 weeks. Some of them have been doing this for years, while others are on their first tour. Cameras will be there every step of the way as they take on the unique challenges and intense pressures of working in the medical profession as they face life or death decisions every day. But it’s not ‘all work and no play.’ On days off, they take advantage of all that their host city has to offer, meet new people and potential new loves while often trying to keep previous relationships and friendships alive. It’s the ultimate ‘work-hard/play-hard’ lifestyle.

Will you tune in and follow these nurses on their journey? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Horrible show.

From a post on Facebook, “I don’t dislike the show for the fact that it makes me look bad as a nurse. I dislike the show for the fact that the nurse-patient relationship relies on a patient’s ability to literally trust a nurse with his or her life. If this television show changes the public perception of nurses to the image of drunken wild children with only minimal competency, the problem isn’t the fact that our reputations are at stake. The problem is that an image like that erodes patient trust, consciously or otherwise. And if patients don’t trust the nurses who are supposed to care for them, they won’t seek out care. They won’t let you care for them. Making a caricature of the image of nursing is a threat to public safety, and for that, MTV should be pretty ashamed.”

How would you improve the show? What do you think MTV should do to correct the public perception that they are portraying?

  • MTV show portrays travel nurses, stirs controversy

Healthcare Staffing Report: Nov. 14, 2013

November 13, 2013.

A new MTV reality show, called “Scrubbing In,” shines the spotlight on travel nursing. And while the show is bringing attention to travel nursing, it has taken criticism from some corners. The presidents of both the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and American Nurses Association wrote to MTV President Stephen Friedman to protest the show’s portrayal of nurses.

However, the healthcare staffing firm that provided the nurses for the show said it will raise the visibility of travel nurses and there have been more positive comments than negative.

“I think there have been more travel nurses who have been supportive and understand that the show is a show and anything on television caters to a certain audience,” said Alan Braynin, CEO of Aya Healthcare Inc., a San Diego-based healthcare staffing firm. “It’s not meant to be an account of all travel nurses.”

It needs to be judged on the standards of the MTV audience and the programming of that network, which is aimed at an under-20 audience, Braynin said. “I think this show probably raises the bar on programming of the network, and I think it will encourage some folks to consider nursing that otherwise may have not thought about it.”

The nine of the nurses on “Scrubbing In” went through the same vetting process as all travel nurses, including background checks, education verifications and drug screens. “Scrubbing In” nurses obtained all appropriate state licenses before any patient care was performed. Six of the nurses on the show had level 1 trauma center intensive care unit experience event before shooting.

“In reality, these nurses worked hard in the hospital for 13 weeks, they performed important work,” Braynin said. The nurses did a great job clinically and did charitable endeavors outside of work, although the show portrays only a small portion of their lives, he said. How a network chooses to cover that is a decision of the network.

However, Carol Manchester, president of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, called for the show to be canceled in her letter of Nov. 5 to the president of MTV.

“This program portrays nurses in a disrespectful and unfair light for purely salacious purposes,” Manchester wrote. “We urge you in the strongest possible terms to cancel it.”

Manchester’s letter said the show could hurt nurse recruitment.

“As you must be aware, the United States is facing a shortage of nurses and there are efforts under way across the country to encourage young people to enter nursing and increase enrollment in nursing schools,” Manchester wrote. “A television program that intentionally reinforces negative and antiquated stereotypes about nurses and that shows them in the worst possible light does nothing to support those efforts, and, in fact, serves to do the opposite.”

American Nurses Association President Karen Daley also criticized the show for its portrayal of nurses and potential impact on recruiting efforts for the profession.

“Based on the premiere, this show is neither ‘reality’ nor entertainment; it is harmful and irresponsible,” Daley wrote in her letter of Oct. 25.

The show premiered on Oct. 24, and was filmed at hospitals in Orange County, Calif.

MTV has also stirred controversy in the past with other shows. And some have said the show’s trailer may paint a different picture than the show itself.

Aya previously did another television show on travel nurses called “13 Weeks,” that focuses more on the clinical side and was edited more closely to the staffing firm’s taste and audience. He said his firm is considering more nurse-related content that will focus on some of the heroic work done by nurses.

First Travel Nurse Reality Show Announces Cast Members

by NurseTV.com

"13 WEEKS" Follows Six Travel Nurses in Southern California

Access Nurses, a national travel nurse company, today announced the six cast members for the first reality show about travel nurses -- highly skilled healthcare professionals who

travel the country working at hospitals with acute needs for 13 weeks at a time.

With over 26,000 votes cast, and more than 100 applicants, visitors to http://www.NurseTV.com

chose the following six cast members to live in a mansion in Orange Country and experience the attractions and excitement of a Southern California lifestyle,

as well as a very intense and challenging hospital work environment. Taping has begun, with the show's debut scheduled for November online at http://www.NurseTV.com

Alycen Skorvonek

Specialty: Emergency Room

Activities: Surfing, professional chef

Nursing background: As an EMT, Alycen was never able to establish the bond with her patients in a way that she saw with her nursing peers. Finally making the transition to nursing was not easy. In Los Angeles, she was shot in the crossfire between rival gang members -- but heroically returned to work the next day.

Amy Morrison

Specialty: L&D

Activities: Milking goats on a Gentlemen's Farm, competitive ballroom dancing Nursing background: An all-American farm girl, Amy followed in her grandmother's footsteps and became a nurse. Travel nursing allowed her to break free from her small-town background and see America.

Angelena Johnson

Activities: Raising her son

Nursing background: Angelena worked during the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing. She was on her way to meet a friend at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and would have been in the building when the bombing occurred had her son not forgotten a book and missed the bus. Her friend did not survive the bombing.

Specialty: Emergency Room Activities: Playing traditional Irish music in pubs Nursing background: Emily has worked in remote Indonesian villages using helicopters, fishing boats and watercraft to establish mobile clinics and provide relief after the devastating tsunami of 2004.

Nick Shields

Specialty: Intensive Care Unit

Activities: Enjoying football, auto racing, playing pool, bowling, working out

Nursing background: At age 16, Nick was in a car accident that tore his aorta, broke both legs and arms, collapsed a lung, and caused internal bleeding in his stomach. He spent six months in the hospital before being released. A year later, Nick's brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer and spent several months in the hospital. It was then that Nick decided to enter nursing as a way to give back to the profession.

Ron Coronado

Activities: Volunteering at camps for children with heart disease, stints on "General Hospital" and "The Bold and the Beautiful" Nursing background: Ron serves as nurse manager at a non-profit AIDS clinic in Hollywood and works at UCLA's hospital on the weekends.

About 13 WEEKS

The show, 13 WEEKS, will focus on the lives of six travel nurses relocated to Southern California from all over the country -- including a very intense and challenging hospital work environment, the excitement of exploring Southern California, and the demands of living with five new roommates. Some of the nurses also will have personal development goals for the 13 WEEKS. Filming will occur inside hospitals, inside the mansion and on pre-planned events. The show will be comprised of 13 WEEKS of episodes, as well as a background piece on each of the six nurses. Each episode will be five to seven minutes

in length and there will be multiple episodes per week.

By showcasing the exciting and rewarding lifestyle that travel nursing offers, Access Nurses hopes the show will encourage more people to join the nursing profession. The United States Department of Labor predicts that the country will have over 600,000 unfilled nursing positions by the year 2020.

National Nurses Week 2024: A RN reflects on the state of the profession, calls for change

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.

We Shouldn't Be Surprised ‘The GOAT’s All-Woman Alliance Failed

Whether it's 'Big Brother' or 'Survivor', an all-woman alliance rarely succeeds, and The GOAT seems to fare no better.

The Big Picture

  • An all-woman alliance formed on The GOAT backfires due to leaks about the strategy.
  • Women's alliances have a poor track record on reality shows like Survivor and Big Brother.
  • Reality TV crossover event The GOAT showcases entertaining chaos and failed alliances.

The second episode of The GOAT celebrated the messy shows of Bravo . Through hilarious nods to some of the iconic moments in Bravo history, the players got to pretend they were Bravolebrities. While Bravo was the focus of the episode, with the Bravo Relay Race leading to a tight finish, the episode was centered around the formation of an all-woman alliance. With Grocery Store Joe Amabile from The Bachelorette and Dancing with the Stars and Justin Johnson aka Alyssa Edwards from RuPaul's Drag Race as the only men on the losing team, personal alliances and friendships took priority over the short-lived alliances when The Bachelor star Tayshia Adams spilled the beans about the alliance to her Bachelor Nation friend Joe. In the end, at the Ultimation, Bachelor Nation lost one of their own as a result. Whether it's Big Brother or Survivor , an all-woman alliance rarely ever succeeds. Guess the herd didn't do their homework!

As a love letter to reality television , Amazon Prime Video's The GOAT has launched itself into reality television history as fourteen of the genres' greatest personalities were united under one roof in GOAT Manor as they compete to become the greatest reality star of all time. Spanning an assortment of franchises under the reality television umbrella, the crossover event has become a must-see streaming. Hosted by Daniel Tosh in a tongue-in-cheek role, the herd, as they're called, compete in daily challenges for immunity before a group challenge will determine who will be up for elimination at the Ultimation. The GOAT is all fun and games as the mansion's backyard plays host to all the wacky events, but for some players, once the potential to remain safe thanks to safety in numbers became evident, a major reality show trope came to life.

The GOAT (2024)

The goat became a battle of the sexes.

Following the elimination of The Circle 's Joey Sasso , thirteen reality stars remained; six men and seven women. Perhaps due to the fact that the players were split into two bedrooms based on gender, The GOAT swiftly turned into a battle of the sexes. Huddled in their room, 90 Day Fiancé alum Paola Mayfield led the charge to align the women together as they had the majority in the house. Everyone seemed on board with the plan. Even Da'Vonne Rogers , star of Big Brother and The Challenge , was apprehensive of the plan. Knowing that in these types of games it's always important to agree but not commit, Da'Vonne was willing to go along until it would no longer suit her. In order to win safety, the players were tasked to get messy like they do on the Bravo shows in a wild game of reality TV-adjacent trivia in the mud. FBoy Island winner CJ Franco won and had the power to pick the teams in the next challenge. And for her, she just wanted to make sure the teams were even and everyone was having fun.

To earn safety in the Ultimation, the herd was tasked to engage in a Bravo Relay Race. First, players had to flip a table in honor of The Real Housewives of New Jersey 's iconic table flip felt around the world by Teresa Giudice . Then they had to toss utensils wrapped in napkins into a bus bin as if they were on Vanderpump Rules . Finally, two life preserver rings had to be tossed on buoys in the pool as they pay homage to Below Deck . Unfortunately, the losing team included Grocery Store Joe and RuPaul's Drag Race legend Alyssa Edwards. With the women having a plan to vote out one of the boys, not everyone was too keen on the available options. CJ had made an incredibly beautiful bond with Justin aka Alyssa earlier in the day as she learned about their life as a gay man who was a drag entertainer.

By revealing the struggles they've been through, CJ opens up in a way she rarely does. CJ revealed that she has two dads, which made her bond even further with the drag star. Informing the women that Justin aka Alyssa was off the table, the votes would have to fall to Joe, who seemed to be checked out of the game. With her pre-show friendship with Joe, Tayshia felt it would be best to alert her Bachelor Nation bestie about the women's alliance who were targeting him. Little did she know that would be the nail in her coffin. By leaking the truth about the alliance, the women turned on her, voting her out in the process. The women's alliance, less than 24 hours of being formed, cannibalized themselves. Oh, PS. This time, when Daniel Tosh collected the votes from the butt of the GOAT statue, he left a little trail, so we still don't know the authenticity of those votes. But hey, it's camp!

'The GOAT' Is Going to Unite Reality Fans as Their New Obsession

Women's alliances on reality tv have a poor track record.

The trope of forming an all-girls alliance has been executed since the dawn of time. Billed as a way to empower women and to ensure their safety, these alliances are formed with great intent. History has shown that women get targeted often on competition shows. They want to eliminate the meat shields in front of them that seem to have it easy. Satisfying the needs and desires of everyone's goal in the game is hard in any alliance, no matter the make-up, but once the sentiment of a women's alliance is uttered, they get hartially scrutinized. Just this season on Survivor 46 , the Siga Tribe women formed an instant bond, but when the time came for their tribe to vote someone out, Jem Hussain-Adams was sacrificed. That being said, Survivor is known for the greatest female alliance in history with the Black Widow Brigade on Survivor: Micronesia . Comprised of season winner Parvati Shallow , Natalie Bolton, Cirie Fields , and Amanda Kimmel , they dominated the game and became the final four. And all players since have done everything in their power to recreate this, but it's truly been capturing lighting in a bottle. It just can't happen twice. One caveat would be when Survivor initially split the tribes by gender, such as in Survivor: The Amazon , Survivor: Vanuatu , and Survivor: One World . Those alliances were formed thanks to their original tribes.

Another major reason for the lack of success is the perception of women's alliances by other players, predominantly male players. On Survivor: Island of the Idols , Kellie Kim called out one of the men on her tribe at Tribal Council for his sexiest vantage on the idea of a women's alliance, as they don't discuss an all-male alliance in the same manner. When it comes to Big Brother , they're just as prevalent. On the legendary Big Brother 6 , a mostly all-female alliance was formed not as a gender split, but simply due to the make-up of the remaining players. Houseguests winner Maggie Ausburn , Ivette Corredero , and April Lewis were aligned in "The Friendship" as they vehemently opposed the other side of the house. Now The GOAT 's Da'Vonne is quite familiar with why this strategy would not work. She attempted to do this during her time on Big Brother 17 , and it crumbled almost as soon as it began. She knows how it could look and how it could be a detriment , but as the most strategic individual in the game, she also knows that opposing the plan could have been just as bad. As someone who has had her hand in two different franchises, because of the format on The Challenge , gender-driven alliances are not quite the same as the eliminations are gender-based.

A major issue in the formation of the alliance that formed on The GOAT was the makeup of the women being from non-competitive strategy reality shows. CJ Franco, Lauren Speed-Hamilton , Tayshia Adams, and Paola Mayfield were on dating shows. Jill Zarin and Kristen Doute are from documentary-style shows on Bravo. With Da'Vonne Rogers as the sole representative from a show where the players vote one another out, she has experience with alliances. The others don't. They felt the urge to try what they'd seen, rather than understand the impact of what it could do. But leave it to Da'Vonne to drop a bomb into the game when she happens to be the rogue vote for Tayshia, causing a tizzy in the house. Once again, the women who have never partaken in a show of this nature felt betrayed by this mysterious vote. Welcome to a competition show!

The GOAT has proven that no matter the make-up of the cast, reality television will forever be entertaining. Between silly games, over-the-top personalities, and mind games to make your head spin, The GOAT has captured the essence of the genre. Watching the spectacular blunder of an alliance was pure magic . Viewers knew it was doomed the moment the women sat together on the beds. But the best part will be the lingering effects. Let's just say, these women are bound to continue to turn on one another.

The GOAT streams new episodes on Thursdays on Prime Video.
