“Value for money holiday”

I have been using Travel Republic since 2011 1-3 times a year and have never had a problem with them and so easy to book and pay for. 2016 they emailed me to say they couldn't let us stay at the sol pelicanos as they were filming Benidorm and they made a mistake booking us in. They put us in the Melia which turned out to be 5 star luxury. They went over and above. Got refunded in full for our cancelled June holiday this year 2020 with no problem. Have booked up for 26 February 2021. Fingers crossed. Marcus.

“Arrived to find Hotel Booking Unpaid”

Absolutely diabolical service - I arrived at the hotel to find the accommodation was not paid for and the hotel chain has had such a bad experience with the accommodation supplier (who I believe is owned by the same group as TR) that they asked me to pay for the accommodation again. This is despite yourselves having taken the money from myself 1 month earlier. Fortunately i was able to cover the hotel bill with my credit card but not everybody may be able to do that. It was a 4 day stay and Travel Republic finally paid on the 4th day

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

travel republic flights not confirmed

PLEASE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE

I would never book a holiday through travel republic again, terrible company, with bad business practices.

Booked via Internet and then tried to phone to amend accommodation from hb to AI 30 minutes later which they couldn't do, which was fine but at same time said I was still waiting for flight info which they said I would receive by the next evening.

Next evening came, still no flight info even tho accommodation & transfere detail confirmed, I checked the flight company website to ensure flights still available, they were, but as travel republic had taken money for flights I didn't want to double book flights then get charged. I tried numerous times to get through to travel republic but couldn't so left details via website but was not happy as supposed to be flying next day.

On the day of travel finally spoke to someone at TR that I had to phone at 9am said they would call me back they did @ 10 to say no flights booked would now cost extra£100 per person aswell, TR took no responsibility for this lapse saying they could not get onto Ryan air site day before to book flights !!! WHY didn't the tell me the day before???? I could have booked the flights myself at half the price now I was left with no choice but to pay extra, asked to speak to person in charge and I was told they would call me back, THEY DID NOT! Why book accom and transferred for a client without making sure they had flights , I am about to send complaint to company but doubt they will care as I've had no communication from them at all, despite them having my email, home & mobile numbers. TERRIBLE COMPANY, DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM HAVE PIECE OF MIND AND BOOK YOUSELF DIRECT WITH INDIVIDUAL COMPANY'S ALOT LESS HASSLE AND BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE, TRAVEL REPUBLIC JUST WANT UR MONEY AND DO NOT DELIVER WHAT IS PROMISED!

' class=

Andrew....you can't use this forum to solicit business for your "book." Reported for solicitation.

' class=

All Travel Republic did was what you would have done for yourself, so why use a middleman? You still have three separate contracts for the three separate elements, and if the agent (TR) are informed last minute by their suppliers that part isn't available, you have a problem. This usually happens because the accommodation themselves overbook, and have to bump someone very late, when they don't get the cancellations or no shows they expect. Sometimes it may be the fault of the agents suppliers, but it's not the agent that overbooks. If you book direct with the accommodation (not via a third party) you don't usually get bumped, because you pay higher rates.

Better to cut out the middlemen altogether, and flights are always best booked direct with the airline .

' class=

Not always true, maybe better for you, but not everyone will agree.

What about the people who are happy to use a middleman, they take care of everything and they financially protect your holiday.

I only have a few posts but it's a bit tedious keep pointing it out. Passenger 'a' books his flight to Prague direct with Wizz air, his hotel direct, pays £168. Passenger 'b' books the exact same through a third party who are bonded by the TTA for £163. 'Hardly a discount' I hear the bargain travelers cry. Wizz air decide to pull the route whilst you are on holiday. How does passenger 'a' get home? He pays for a new flight himself at whatever that cost is and will get a refund no doubt from Wizz air for the original flights only. Passenger 'b' booked with a financially protected agent, he will be flown home at no extra charge on the next suitable flight the agent can find for him and he doesn't need to look himself.

They financially protect your holiday against supplier financial failure, nothing else. If you're travelling independently, as you are if you book through TR, you need the correct insurance anyway, and the cover will include end supplier failure as part of it.

travel republic flights not confirmed

"What about the people who are happy to use a middleman"

A lot of time they end up posting their complaints in here.

The point you miss Leyland, is that these are bargain travellers.

They will (should 9 times out of 10) get the product cheaper using a middleman and they don't want to pay the extra for an insurance that covers them for supplier failure. Many of these people decline any insurance deeming it a 'hidden extra'.

Once you deal with these people who want something for nothing you begin to understand, They want the cheapest possible holiday with full protection, that is what an agent provides.

Not true Lex, the minority post on here when you look at percentages. These companies between them must book millions of passengers each year, and only a few who didn't get the answer they wanted post on here. There are very few if any 'rogue' travel agents in the UK who have no guidelines to follow. People act like it is an unregulated trade and that they will be scammed, not true.

' class=

If anything goes belly up that means your money is safe unlike when companies like holiday click and goldtrail went bust just to name a few people lost thousands.... Its not a hidden extra its something that you may thank if you ever need it.....

robert, whether they book through a middleman (TR in this case) or not, they still need the correct insurance cover for travelling independently. The cover usually includes supplier failure anyway.

You should have the correct insurance cover, and this will cover for supplier failure, along with the other necessary cover for independent travel. No OTA should be booking flights or flights and hotel without an Atol anyway.

US says it will defend Israel but would not be part of Iran attack response: Live updates

One day after Iran launched a historic missile and drone strike on Israel, the U.S. stressed Sunday that it is committed to defending its longtime ally − but it would not be a part of any responsive action that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government could take.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. is not seeking escalation and does not want a war with Iran.

A U.S. official who briefed reporters emphasized the U.S. was not involved in the initial Israeli strike that killed two Iranian commanders in Syria earlier this month and led to Iran's assault on Saturday. The official indicated President Joe Biden sought to take the temperature down in a call with Netanyahu on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, top Israeli officials who huddled Sunday back retaliation but are divided on the method and timing, Reuters reported. Netanyahu's five-member War Cabinet was expected to meet again to weigh a response to the attack, which has ratcheted up global concerns about a wider Mideast war.

War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz vowed Iran would pay. "We will build a regional coalition and exact the price from Iran in the fashion and timing that is right for us,” Gantz said.

Israel and Iran have long been engaged in a so-called shadow war, with Iran using its proxies − militant groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen's Houthi rebels − to target Israel, which has undertaken targeted assassinations inside Iran.

But the attack marked the first time that Iran directly targeted Israel from its own territory. The assault underscores how the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza , which began with the militants' attacks on Israeli border communities on Oct. 7, risks spilling over into a broader regional conflict.

Will it spark a wider war? Israel's long-simmering conflict with Iran moves out of the shadows.

Developments:

∎ U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" program that he would try to pass aid to Israel this week. The White House later confirmed that Biden convened a call Sunday afternoon with Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to discuss the urgent need for the House to pass the national security supplemental as soon as possible.

∎ The Israeli military lifted restrictions early Monday, saying children can return to school. Nationwide restrictions were enacted as Israel went on "high alert" Saturday and prohibited school activities and restricted gatherings to 1,000 people, the Times of Israel reported.

∎ Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Sunday for the third time this weekend to review the combined operation by the United States, Israel, and their partners to defend Israel from attacks launched from Iranian territory and by Iran's proxies. Austin emphasized that while the United States does not seek escalation, it will continue to take all necessary action to defend Israel and U.S. personnel.

∎ Biden spoke Sunday with Jordan's King Abdullah II and strongly condemned the attack launched by Iran that also threatened Jordan. Both leaders noted that they are monitoring the situation and will remain in close touch over the coming days.

∎ The U.S. and Iran were in contact through Swiss intermediaries both before and after Iran's drone and missile attack, a senior Biden administration official told Reuters on Sunday. The official, who was not named, also said reports that Tehran gave regional countries 72 hours notice of the attacks were not true.

∎ Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps' intelligence unit warned Iranians Sunday against any pro-Israel social media posts after some people in Iran have voiced support for Israel after Iran's attack.

Iran defends attack on Israel

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said Sunday that the country's action was necessary and proportionate. He added that while Tehran does not seek an escalation or war in the region, it reaffirms its right to defend itself.

"If the U.S. initiates military operations against Iran, its citizens, or its security and interests, Iran will use its inherent right to respond proportionately," he said.

UN chief urges restraint after attack

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for maximum restraint Sunday after Iran’s attack on Israel and reminded members of the U.N. Security Council that acts of reprisal involving the use of force are barred under international law. He also condemned the attack and warned against further escalation.

Guterres told member states during a Security Council meeting that the U.N. charter prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," Guterres said.

US-Israel alliance 'ironclad'

In the wake of Saturday's attack by Iran, Schumer called the United States' commitment to Israel's security "ironclad."

Hundreds of drones and missiles from Iran had been fired in Israel's direction, but Schumer, speaking during a Sunday news conference following a call with Biden and congressional leaders, noted Israel and a U.S.-led coalition were able to take down about 99% of the munitions.

Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for Israel's Defense Forces, said in a Sunday briefing that out of more than 120 ballistic missiles launched by Iran, a small number penetrated Israel's border. The rest were shot down. He said an Israeli air force base in southern Israel sustained some "minor damage to infrastructure."

US-led coalition played key role in stopping attack

Israel's response to the historic Iran strike was boosted by a U.S.-led coalition of warplanes and naval assets that helped intercept 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles , according to a U.S. official.

U.S. fighter aircraft and guided-missile destroyers knocked down some of the incoming missiles and drones, according to the official who was briefed on the operation but not authorized to speak publicly. Israel’s Arrow, David’s Sling and Iron Dome also took down most of the attack.

G7 nations vow to 'avoid further escalation'

A group of nations that includes some of the world's top economies said Sunday that they are fully committed to Israel's security.

Group of Seven nations said in a unanimous statement that Iran's attack on Israel risked "provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation."

Biden met Sunday with the group, the White House said.

"This must be avoided," G7 leaders said. "We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives."

The group also said it planned to work closely together "to end the crisis in Gaza," and recommitted to working toward a permanent cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas, release of all militant-held hostages and the delivery of more humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

Will Israel retaliate against Iran?

Iran's armed forces chief, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, told Iran's state TV on Sunday that if Israel retaliates, Iran's response would be "much larger" than the overnight drone and missile assault.

Bagheri also warned that if the U.S. backs an Israeli retaliation it would lead to the targeting of U.S. military bases.

In a separate statement, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said "any new Israeli adventure will be met with a heavier and regretful response."

Will US go to war with Iran?

Kirby said Sunday that the U.S. is not interested in a battle with Iran.

"The president's been very clear: We don't seek a war with Iran, we're not looking for escalation here, we will continue to help Israel defend itself," Kirby said on NBC’s "Meet the Press."

When asked about potential threats to U.S. troops in the region, Kirby said the Pentagon is staying vigilant. “We have not seen any attacks on U.S. troops or personnel in the region or our facilities and nothing to report to this morning. But we’re obviously going to watch that very, very closely."

− Elizabeth Beyer

British leader says British jets shot down drones

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Sunday that British military jets also helped thwart Iran's attack. “I can confirm that our planes did shoot down a number of Iranian attack drones,” Sunak said.

He appealed for calm in the region to avoid an escalation of the conflict. “If this attack had been successful, the fallout for regional stability would be hard to overstate," Sunak said. "We stand by the security of Israel and the wider region, which is of course important for our security here at home, too. What we now need is for calm heads to prevail.”

Palestinians in Gaza see Iran attack as payback

Many Palestinians in Gaza, which has been under constant bombardment from Israel for months, applauded the Iranian attack.

“Whoever decides to attack Israel, dares to attack Israel at a time when the whole world acts in its service is a hero in the eyes of Palestinians regardless of whether we share their (Iran’s) ideology or not,” said Majed Abu Hamza, 52, a father of seven, in Gaza City. “We have been slaughtered for over six months and no one dared to do anything."

The Israeli military said Sunday that it will soon call up two reserve divisions for operations in Gaza.

More than 33,000 Palestinians have died amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel has vowed to crush Hamas after the Oct. 7 border attacks by militants, who killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostage.

Lives lost in Gaza: Visualizing the death and destruction of Israel's war in Gaza

Congress could quickly agree on Israel aid, Rubio says

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., seemed to suggest Congress could quickly send aid to Israel, without sending anything to Ukraine.

“We could go on Monday to Washington, D.C., and we could pass aid to Israel, right away,” said Rubio, vice chair of the Senate select committee on intelligence.

Aid to both countries has stalled , as several House Republicans have opposed sending additional funding to Ukraine. A $95 billion aid package to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan sits currently stuck in the House after passing the Senate in February.

Rubio said he is confident, though, that if the Senate were to send the House an Israel-only aid bill, that the lower chamber would support it.

Iran's attack on Israel: How did we get here?

Israel never confirmed it was behind an April 1 attack on an Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Syria, that killed seven of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps officers, including two senior military commanders: Brig-Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Brig-Gen. Mohammad Hadi Haji-Rahimi.

However, Israel has carried out dozens if not hundreds of strikes on Iran-aligned groups in Syria and elsewhere in recent years . Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in response to Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks, cross-border assaults on northern Israel by Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups in Lebanon and Syria have intensified.

Iran severed all diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel after its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Israel's airspace reopens after attack

Israel reopened its airspace Sunday after Iran's attack led to its closure and caused flight cancellations. Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan also said their respective airspaces had reopened to commercial traffic.

EL AL, Israel's flag carrier airline, said its operations had resumed , but many flights were delayed or canceled.

Major Iranian airports have cancelled all flights until Monday, the country's state media reported.

No anesthesia after 6 months of war: Pregnant women in Gaza Strip face starvation

Hamas says Iran had 'natural right' to attack Israel

Iran's ally Hamas, which has been fighting Israel in Gaza for more than six months , defended the drone and missile attack on Israel.

"We in Hamas regard the military operation conducted by the Islamic Republic of Iran a natural right and a deserved response on the crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus and the assassination of several leaders of the Revolutionary Guards," said Hamas in a statement seen by the Reuters news agency.

On Saturday, Hamas rejected a new cease-fire proposal from Israel, which is trying to secure the return of hostages seized by Hamas in its Oct. 7 attack .

U.S. Embassy lifts 'shelter in place' order

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem lifted its "shelter in place" order for U.S. workers. In a statement , the diplomatic mission said that the "threat of drone and/or missile barrages has diminished."

The embassy did not lift more general travel restrictions in Israel for its employees and their families, reiterating that their personal travel is limited to within and between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva.

Iran attacked Israel. What happens now?

World leaders and officials from China to the U.K. expressed alarm in the wake of Iran's attack on Israel and called for both Israel and Iran to exercise restraint and to avoid further escalation.

"The EU strongly condemns the unacceptable Iranian attack against Israel," Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, said in a post on social platform X . “This is an unprecedented escalation and a grave threat to regional security."

Jordan's Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said that any escalation would lead to "dangerous paths."

Jonathan Panikoff, director of the Atlantic Council think tank's Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, wrote in a blog commentary that "Iran’s launch of ballistic missiles, in conjunction with over 100 drones, puts the region on the precipice of a broader war that almost no one seems to actually want; one that most actors − the United States, Arab states, even Hezbollah − have sought to avoid over the last six months."

Panikoff added that, "At best, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is almost certain to respond and take steps to attack Iranian targets, probably in Iran, in a manner that will be specific and contained and won’t lead to another significant Iranian response. At worst, the Israeli response will be intense and include the bombardment of important Iranian sites."

travel republic flights not confirmed

' class=

I am really surprised to hear all the negative reviews of this company.

' class=

Many thanks for all your help.

kesi, Travel Republic is only an agent and doesn't book directly with the hotel, but through a bedbank. The hotel probably won't have details of your booking until a couple of weeks before you are due to arrive. When an overbooking situation occurs it is very rarely the agent. The main culprits for overbooking are the hotels themselves. They rely on cancellations and no shows, and often sell a room to a direct booker that is already on allocation to a bedbank or tour operator. If they don't get any cancellations, someone gets bumped, and you can bet your bottom dollar it isn't their direct booker!

travel republic flights not confirmed

Been with TR many times and i had a slight problem once regarding an AI package which i found out thru trip advisor was actually AI LITE informed TR .They gave me a 10% refund on return and changed there discription accordingly . Would have no hessitation to book with them the best holiday site on the go .

Tripadvisor staff removed this post because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum guidelines with regards to the participation of business representatives.

travel republic flights not confirmed

After 3 days of them telling me they could not access easyjet to rebook but could get me Ryanair flight if I paid more - which I refused , I got onto Easyjet's site and found flight for 2 days after my planned trip. I CALLED Travel; Republic, and was told they would recheck with easy jet. Two days and several calls later- from my end - no news, and no promised call backs.

They are a complete shambles.

6 people killed in explosions across Russian-occupied Donetsk region, local official says

From CNN's Josh Pennington & Maija Ehlinger

Three people are dead and one person was injured after an explosion in the urban center of Donetsk on Friday, according to the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushilin.

They were employees of a public utility company in Donetsk's Kievsky District and were killed "as a result of the detonation of a previously unexploded cluster submunition," Pushilin said in a post to Telegram.

Hours later, a separate "unidentified explosive device" detonated at a construction site in the Voroshilovskyi district of Donetsk and killed three construction workers and left five more injured, according to officials from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic Joint Center for Command and Control.

Pushilin added that four more people in the cities of Donetsk, Makiivka, Vasilievka and Nikolske were wounded after a day of heavy shelling on Friday.

"Today, the enemy shelled the territory of the Republic 34 times, firing 115 rocket and barrel artillery shells," Pushilin added.

CNN cannot independently verify these claims.

Ukrainian pilots will start F-16 training this month after US hands over materials. Here's what to know

From CNN staff

Ukrainian pilots will start training on how to operate F-16 fighter jets later this month in Denmark, the country's defense ministry said. The United States approved giving instructional materials on the jets, which contain information about sensitive US technology, to Ukraine, officials said.

Russia has barred dozens of British government ministers and journalists from entering the country

Here's what to know:

  • F-16 transfers:  Ukrainian pilots will begin training on F-16 fighter jets in Denmark later in August, the Danish defense ministry said Friday. The US has approved transferring instructional materials on the jets to Ukraine — a critical step to begin the training, a Biden administration official said. The US has already committed to approving the transfer of F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine as soon as training is complete, according to a US official.
  • How training will work: Ukrainian pilots will get language instruction in the United Kingdom since all of the materials and the instruments in the jet itself are in English before they start flying training aircraft. They will then train on propellor aircraft and fly in a different jet trainer used by the French, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa said. This isn't likely to be completed before the end of the year, according to Gen. James Hecker.
  • Attempted attacks on Moscow: Russia blamed Ukraine for Friday’s  attempted drone strike on Moscow , which forced authorities to suspend traffic to four major airports in the Russian capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that Russian air defenses shot down a drone over the capital city overnight.
  • Russian shelling: Some 14,000 people in the frontline region of Donetsk have been  left without power after Russian shelling affected generation at a thermal powerplant, according to Ukraine's grid operator Ukrenergo. The operator also said that months after the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in June, around 11,000 people were still without power in the Kherson region.
  • Russian sanctions list: Moscow has barred 54 more British citizens from entering the country, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government accused the individuals and entities of involvement in "propaganda support of the activities of the [Ukrainian] Zelensky regime." The sanctions list includes several government ministers as well as journalists.
  • Global support: US President Joe Biden said the consequences of the war in Ukraine "extend well beyond Europe." After a  trilateral summit  with Japanese Prime Minster Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the US president commended the Japanese leader on his response to the invasion.

Biden: Consequences of war in Ukraine "extend well beyond Europe"

In remarks after a trilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minster Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, US President Joe Biden commended the Japanese leader on his response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Answering questions from a Japanese reporter at Camp David in Maryland, Biden said Japan has "showed strong leadership through the G7 as well and contributed to a significant amount of financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine as well as nonlethal military equipment. And they've joined so many other nations in holding Russia accountable through international sanctions."

Biden said when he called up Kishida about Ukraine, he didn't have to convince him "of anything."

Calling Russian President Vladimir Putin's rationale over the invasion "ridiculous," Biden said, "Imagine if we'd done nothing. And the point was immediately recognized if I'm not mistaken by you, Mr. Prime Minister, that we're in a situation where it could happen anywhere. If we stood still, what statement would that send to China about Taiwan? What signal would that send around the world?"

"Russia has already lost. It cannot meet its original objective which it stated. It's not possible. ... Japan's leadership from day one, it has been critical making it clear that the consequences for war extend well beyond Europe," he said.

The invasion is not "only a European problem; there hasn't been that kind of invasion since World War II," Biden added.

Russia bars dozens of British citizens from entering the country, including journalists and ministers

From CNN's Katharina Krebs and Lauren Kent

The Kremlin's Spasskaya tower and St. Basil's cathedral is seen in downtown Moscow, on July 13.

Russia has barred 54 more British citizens from entering the country, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the latest update to its sanctions policy, Russia accused the individuals and entities of involvement in "propaganda support of the activities of the [Ukrainian] Zelensky regime" and of being "Russophobic."

The sanctions list includes several government ministers as well as journalists from public broadcaster the BBC, the Guardian newspaper and the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"We would like to emphasize again that any efforts by London to further spin the anti-Russian sanctions flywheel will inevitably receive a decisive response from our side," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. "Work on expanding the Russian 'stop list' in response to the actions of the British authorities will continue."

The updated list includes British cabinet minister Lucy Frazer, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Russian authorities claimed that Frazer is "actively lobbying for the international sports isolation of Russia."

Earlier this year, Frazer said in a social media post that she asked sponsors of the Olympic Games "to join 35 like-minded nations and press the IOC for a continued ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes competing in international sporting competitions," adding that "we must continue to ensure that Russia and Belarus cannot use sport for their propaganda purposes."

The new sanctions also include a Minister of State at the British Ministry of Defence, Baroness Goldie DL, who Russia has accused of being "responsible for the supply of weapons to Ukraine, including depleted uranium shells."

British prosecutor Karim A. A. Khan KC, who is an elected official on the International Criminal Court, will also be barred from Russia due to his involvement "in issuing a warrant for the arrest of the Russian leadership," according to the Russian foreign ministry statement.

In February, Khan submitted applications to the  ICC for warrants of arrest for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.

Kherson region village on Dnipro River cleared of Ukrainian troops, Russian-appointed head says

From CNN's Josh Pennington

The village of Kozachi Laheri, which is on the east bank of the Dnipro River, has been cleared of all Ukrainian forces, the Russian-appointed head of the occupied areas of the southern Kherson region claimed on Friday.

"Assault units of the Dnipro group of troops have completely cleared the area on the left bank of the Dnipro River near the village of Kozachi Laheri in the Alyoshkin district of Kherson Region," Vladimir Saldo claimed in a post on Telegram .

Saldo claimed that despite Ukrainian forces continuing to return fire from the right bank of the Dnipro River, the village is under full Russian control.

"Our forces are suppressing firing points and enemy concentrations on the right bank. ... The situation there remains difficult but fully under the control of the Russian military," the post said.

Earlier this month: On August 9, Russian state media and military bloggers said Ukrainian forces conducted a raid across the Dnipro River and attempted to land near the village.

Natalia Humeniuk, head of the United Coordinating Press Center of Security and Defense Forces of South of Ukraine, dismissed the claims , telling CNN that Russia was "trying to create artificial hype and panic."

Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar also said the reported raid was “not confirmed” by the military’s general staff at the time .

Remember:  Ukraine controls the west bank of the Dnipro River and the city of Kherson after its  counteroffensive last year , while Russian troops remain on the east bank in the larger Kherson region.

Exiled Russian dissident journalist who covered Ukraine war describes suspected poisoning attempt

From CNN's Sophie Tanno and Benjamin Brown

Russian dissident journalist Elena Kostyuchenko has revealed how she was traveling to  Berlin  by train last autumn when she abruptly fell ill, a case that has led German authorities to investigate a suspected poisoning attempt.

Kostyuchenko was living in exile at the time in the German capital after being warned of Russian plans to assassinate her. She was on her way back from a trip to Munich to apply for a Ukrainian visa when she suddenly found herself drenched in strange-smelling sweat and experiencing cognitive difficulties, she  wrote  in the Russian-language publication Meduza this week. A long and mysterious illness then ensued, from which she has yet to completely recover, the journalist said.

An initial investigation by Berlin authorities into a suspected poisoning was closed in May due to lack of evidence, but has now been reopened after further consideration.

“I can confirm that the Berlin prosecutor is investigating against an unknown perpetrator. The case is being treated as attempted murder,” German public prosecutor spokesperson Sebastian Büchner told CNN. “The case was initially closed in May but reopened in July. This was due to new considerations rather than new evidence.”

Kostyuchenko had been working for the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta for 17 years when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. The paper sent her on assignment to Ukraine at the start of the war.

In March 2022, she said she was tipped off by a source in Ukrainian military reconnaissance about Russian plans to assassinate her. She was told she must leave Ukraine immediately and could not return to Russia.

Kostyuchenko eventually fled to Germany, where she rented an apartment in Berlin and began working for Meduza on September 29. After agreeing to a reporting trip to Iran for the publication, she said she was asked to submit paperwork for a Ukrainian visa before she left – requiring her to make the trip to Munich.

In an ordeal outlined in an article written by Kostyuchenko and published in Meduza and  US publication n+1 , she described how she first began to sweat profusely after leaving the Ukrainian embassy on October 18, 2022.

After leaving the train, she said she struggled to remember the way to her apartment.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly over the next days. She developed symptoms including a sharp stomach pain, nausea, shortness of breath and swelling.

US has given Denmark approval for F-16 instructional materials for Ukraine

From CNN's Natasha Bertrand, Oren Liebermann and Jennifer Hansler

F-16 aircrafts are seen during a military parade in Warsaw, Poland, on August 15.

The US has approved the transfer of F-16 instructional materials to Ukraine, according to a Biden administration official and a US official, as the program to train Ukrainian pilots on the American jets is set to begin.

“We can confirm the Department has recently approved a request from F-16 training partner Denmark related to their effort to stand up pilot and maintenance training programs,” said the official in President Joe Biden's administration.

The approval includes training modules, documentation, and classroom training materials, the official said, which contains information about sensitive US technology.

The approval of the third-party transfer request from Denmark was one of the critical steps before Ukrainian fighter pilots could begin training to fly the fourth-generation jets, which Kyiv has requested for months. Earlier Friday, the Danish defense ministry said Ukrainian pilots would begin training on F-16 jets later this month, part of a coalition of 11 countries that will be involved in the training program.

On Thursday, the US said it had committed to approving the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as soon as training is complete.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent letters to his counterparts in Denmark and the Netherlands assuring them that the transfer of the jets would have the “full support” of the Biden administration and would move quickly when training on the advanced aircraft is complete.

“You have my assurances that we will expedite approval of the requisite Third Party Transfer requests in time to enable delivery when the training is completed, including required notification to our Congress,” wrote Blinken in the letters.

Training will take time: On Friday, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa said the Ukrainian pilots who will learn to fly the F-16 fighter jet are getting language instruction in the United Kingdom, since all of the materials and the instruments in the jet itself are in English, before they start flying training aircraft.

“They’re going to get a little bit more training on (propellor aircraft) and then go down to France and fly in the Alpha jet for a little bit,” said Gen. James Hecker, speaking to a roundtable of reporters as part of the Defense Writers Group. The Alpha jet used by the French is an advanced jet trainer.

“That all is going to take time, and that’s probably not going to happen before the end of the year, so that takes a while to make that happen,” Hecker said. “So that’s why it’s going to be at least until next year until you see F-16s in Ukraine.”

Hecker said the Ukrainian pilots taking part in the F-16 training program are younger pilots who “barely have any hours at all” and are not currently taking part in the war.

The Ukrainians also said on Wednesday that they didn’t expect to receive the F-16s until  next year .

Ukrainian pilots will start F-16 training in Denmark later this month

From CNN’s Sarah Dean in London

Ukrainian pilots will begin training on F-16 fighter jets in Denmark later in August, the Danish defense ministry said Friday.

A coalition of 11 countries will be involved in the training, it added.

Some background: CNN reported Thursday that the US has committed to approving the transfer of F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine as soon as training is complete, according to a US official.

Denmark and the Netherlands have taken the lead in preparing a program to train Ukrainian pilots on the American jet, but the US is still working with other countries to see who may provide F-16s to the Ukrainian Air Force.

Ukraine said Wednesday that it didn’t expect to receive F-16s until  some time next year .
