TripSavvy / Jill DeForest Colvig

There’s nowhere on the planet quite like the Disney theme parks, where dreams really do come true for grown-ups and kids alike. But making sure you and your family have the best time possible on your visit requires some planning— a comfortable pair of shoes , a thorough itinerary, and a bag to carry all the items you'll need for the day. The best bag for Disney leaves your hands free, is comfortable enough to wear for hours of walking and standing in line, and is organized enough to accommodate everything you need without being overly large or bulky.

Whether you opt for a backpack, a fanny pack, or a crossbody sling bag is up to you. To help you make the right decision, we tested no fewer than 108 popular options both in our New York City lab and out in the real world. Each was scored for quality, capacity, ease of use, value, and fit. We also included two researched options.

Final Verdict

How we tested.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, patagonia atom sling bag.

Easily adjustable

Exterior compression storage

High-quality, sustainable materials

Bulky divider limits packing space

We loved the Patagonia Atom Sling Bag so much that we wore it almost every day of the test period for everything from shopping to music festivals. Made in a Fair Trade–certified factory from 100 percent recycled polyester with a PFC-free DWR finish, it’s water resistant (perfect for those rainy Disney days) and impressively strong, leaving us confident that it will last many years. It offers 8 liters of capacity and uses an asymmetrical harness to distribute weight evenly across the body, offering maximum comfort as you add more snacks and merch to your day. We found the strap intuitive to loosen or tighten, with plenty of flexibility for all body types.

This sling bag also stands out for its superior organization. The main compartment is separated by a padded divider, which we appreciated for keeping our tech secure (although we did feel it took up a little too much room). We could fit a lot of small items—from sunglasses to lip balm—in the large front pocket and found that they were easily accessible thanks to the pocket’s flat layout and long zipper. Our favorite feature? The tiny compartment on the strap itself is big enough to keep cards handy at a moment’s notice. Tuckaway lash straps also let you attach an extra layer to the outside of the bag for those unexpected Orlando showers.

Whether your Disney outfits center around cute dresses or casual jeans, this bag goes with everything and comes in six colors from yellow to blue.

Size: 13.5 x 9 x 3 inches | Weight: 12 ounces | Materials: Recycled polyester with a non-PFC DWR finish

Best Fanny Pack

Jansport fanny pack.

Roomy pockets with zippers on both sides

Extra-length strap fits various people

Sturdily built from quality materials

Not as comfy over the shoulder

We wore the Jansport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack virtually nonstop throughout the test period and took it hiking, city sightseeing, and to the coast on a trip to Oregon. It’s made from high-quality, 600-denier recycled polyester and showcases the durability that Jansport is known for. We found that even when it got dirty, it was easy to spot clean, or throw in the washing machine. Although it’s meant primarily as a fanny pack, the bag’s adjustable strap also means you can wear it as a crossbody sling. We found it more comfortable to wear around the waist simply because the straps are not the softest.

We loved that the 50-inch strap extends far enough to accommodate a full range of body types. We also appreciated that, once adjusted, the strap stayed in place throughout the day. The pack offers two zippered compartments, both of which are surprisingly spacious. We fit all the essentials you’d need for a trip to Disney, from wallet and cell phone to sunscreen and sanitizer. And, whether you’re a pastel lilac or a surplus camo kind of person, you should find a colorway to suit your style.

Size: 10 x 6 x 2.5 inches | Weight: 4.5 ounces | Materials: 600-denier recycled polyester

Best With Water Bottle

Nathan hydration waist pack.

Distributes load effectively

Great option for those with busy hands

Streamlined yet functional

Excess strap comes loose easily

Drinking from bottle requires some effort

For the minimalist packer whose main concern is drinking enough water throughout a long day in the park, we present the Nathan Peak Hydration Waist Pack. Your purchase includes an Ergological SpeedDraw bottle with a push-pull cap and 18 fluid ounces of capacity, which fits seamlessly into the angled and insulated bottle holder. The bottle is held in place by an elastic strap, which we found easy to operate one-handed (useful if you’re taking photos or wrangling kids with the other hand). Meanwhile, the flared opening enables returning the bottle to its holster without looking.

The pack’s tight, contoured fit made it super comfortable—so much so that even with a full water bottle, we barely noticed the extra weight. The padded strap features a moisture-wicking mesh lining to keep you cool in the Florida or California heat, while an external shockcord system lets you attach a light raincoat to the outside of the pack just in case. The strap is fairly inclusive, fitting waists of between 26 and 44 inches. Although it’s primarily a water bottle holder, the strap also features an expandable zippered pocket just big enough for your phone, cards, and keys.

Most Packable

Sea to summit ultra-sil travel day pack.

Stows down into an impossibly compact size

Amazingly spacious

Suitable for active pursuits

No dedicated water bottle holder

Straps may be uncomfortable if overpacked

If your Disney vacation involves a flight and packing light is a top priority, you’ll love this highly technical, ultralight daypack from Sea to Summit. Made from ultra-sil fabric (30-denier siliconized Cordura), it offers incredible strength-to-weight performance and impressive durability. This water-resistant material showed no signs of wear and tear after our test period. Best of all, the bag folds down to the size of an egg and packs away into an included stuff sack with an attached carabiner. It adds just 2.5 ounces to your luggage and saves your shoulders by keeping things as light as possible.

Despite its lightweight packability, the bag offers 20 liters of capacity. On every outing we took it on, we packed a large range of items and still had plenty of space left over. There is one drawback: The no-frills design means no organization features, so you might have to rummage around a bit to find what you want between rides. The shoulder straps are reinforced but unpadded, so the maximum load recommendation is 15 pounds. We found the straps comfortable, with a full range of movement (albeit limited adjustability). Choose yours in gray, orange, or blue.

Size: 18.9 x 11 x 7.9 inches | Weight: 2.5 ounces | Materials: 30-denier siliconized Cordura fabric

Best Mini Backpack

Paravel mini fold-up backpack.

Customizable

Easily fits all essentials

Great "just-in-case" item

Nothing yet!

We love the mini version of Paravel’s popular full-size backpack. It’s designed to meet TSA requirements for personal items and folds up flat into a tiny zippered pouch, yet despite its lightweight packability, it offers an impressive amount of storage. We could fit an iPhone Max, hand sanitizer, a wallet, keys, a flask, and two T-shirts. In particular, we loved that this backpack offers an exterior and interior zippered pocket (unusual for a mini) to aid with organization and keep valuables securely accessible. All of the zippers operated smoothly and the bag held up well during our durability tests.

It’s made from Negative Nylon using 10 recycled plastic bottles and is water resistant (a major plus if you get caught in a downpour or for keeping your belongings dry on Splash Mountain). We found the backpack comfortable to wear for extended periods, and although the straps are unpadded, they’re made of a super-soft material that feels great even on bare skin. Choose from six colors to suit every aesthetic preference, from safari green to canyon yellow. Up your style game by adding embroidery to your backpack at checkout.

Size: 12 x 10 x 6 inches | Weight: 7 ounces | Materials: Negative nylon

Best for Kids

Simple modern disney kids backpack.

High-performance design

Good level of organization

Range of gorgeous Disney prints

Some reviewers mention issues with zippers

The Simple Modern Kids Backpack comes in three sizes and a host of different prints and materials. The 7-year-old daughter of one of our team members tried a Disney princess print in polyester, while other Disney-ready designs include Moana’s Village, Mickey Mouse Retro, and Frozen Elsa’s Snowflake. We found our version easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and were impressed by its reinforced stitching; thick, shape-holding lining; and weather resistance. It was comfortable for our little tester to carry with adjustable, padded shoulder straps, while the sternum strap was a particular highlight that made her feel extra grown-up.

We fit two folders, a pair of shoes, a water bottle, and a lunchbox in the medium-size backpack and had space left over for an extra layer or two. It’s the ideal size for a day out in the park without being too big or heavy for kids to carry themselves. We also liked that it was easy for a child to zip and unzip one-handed. Features include a padded tablet sleeve, a zippered front pocket and stash pocket, and two expandable bottle sleeves. The backpack stayed in place when our tester ran with it, and she couldn’t get enough of the bright color and fun print.

Size: 15.3 x 12.5 x 5.3 inches | Weight: Not listed | Materials: Various including polyester, vegan leather, and clear plastic

Best Diaper Bag

Petunia pickle bottom ace backpack diaper bag.

Petunia Pickle Bottom

Gorgeous Disney-themed designs

Security pocket

Hot/cold-holding storage

Some reviews mention quality concerns

If you’re taking your small children to Disney for the first time and want a themed diaper bag to match, we love the Ace Backpack Diaper Bag from Petunia Pickle Bottom. This was one of our researched options, and we fell in love with the Disney Princess and Shimmery Minnie Mouse prints, both of which feature whimsical character portraits on a pastel pink background. The first option has a leather tag with Cinderella’s castle printed on it, while the latter has a Minnie Mouse tag and cute metallic gold accents. Both are made from naturally water-resistant leatherette fabric that’s easy to clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent—great for those inevitable spills.

The extra-wide opening makes it easy to load the bag with all your baby’s essentials, from diapers and snacks to spare changes of clothes. Organize your smaller items in one of two zippered front pockets, and keep your sunglasses or phone secure from inquisitive hands in the felt-lined back pocket. Worried about keeping juice bottles cool or milk bottles warm throughout a long day in the park? Insulated exterior pockets help with that. Other perks include a washable changing pad and comfy, padded backpack straps for lightening the load of traveling with little people.

Size: 15 x 15 x 4.7 inches | Weight: 2 pounds | Materials: Leatherette fabric

Best for Teens

Lesportsac mini phone crossbody.

Two ways to carry

Insta-ready, Disney-themed prints

Tough, sustainable build

All organization pockets are open

One of our researched options, the LeSportSac Mini Phone Crossbody is the ultimate accessory for teens who view a visit to the parks as their personal fashion show. There are multiple solid colors and patterns available, including two Disney styles (Disney100 Mickey Mouse and Disney100 Friends). Meanwhile, the sleek shape and minimalist design goes well with any outfit. Your teen can even switch up their look from one day to the next by using the top handle to carry it handbag-style or by wearing it crossways using the adjustable, detachable strap.

Eco-conscious teens will appreciate that the bag is made from recycled ripstop fabric, which also scores points for durability. The main compartment is roomy enough for even the largest cellphone, with a zippered closure to protect it from pickpockets or inclement weather. The bag also has three open slip pockets for storing small essentials, from tickets and credit cards to maps and hair accessories. These are located on the exterior front and back, and on the bag’s interior back wall.

Size: 7.6 x 4.3 x 1.4 inches | Weight: Not listed | Materials: Ripstop recycled fabric

When heading to Disney, carry the Atom Sling Bag from Patagonia. Its padded adjustable strap keeps you enjoying the day instead of fiddling to find a comfortable fit and, not surprisingly from this brand, it is made with tough, recycled polyester. For those die-hard fanny packers, the Jansport Fifth Avenue is hard to beat.

Products for this roundup were selected from different testing projects carried out by TripSavvy’s team of experts. Methodology differed slightly between tests, but the basic principles were the same: we began by assessing the quality and durability of each bag’s materials, construction, and hardware, while also checking the inclusivity of any adjustable straps. Next, bags were packed with a list of items appropriate for their size and purpose so that we could evaluate capacity and organization.

We then tested all possible carrying methods multiple times over a set testing period to determine the bag’s comfort, fit, and functionality. The testing periods varied from at least two hikes of at least an hour each for our hiking daypack tests to every school day for a month for our children’s backpack tests. Mini backpacks were subjected to lab testing as well as real-life testing. In total, we tested 108 bags, each of which was scored on a scale of one to five for quality, capacity, ease of use, fit, and value. Overall scores determined our category winners.

What to Look For in a Bag or Backpack for Disney

In order to be allowed in, your bag or backpack must measure less than 24 x 15 x 18 inches, which is just a few inches larger than a regular carry-on. We recommend taking a much smaller bag if you can, though: the average visitor to the Disney parks walks several miles each day and overpacking can quickly result in sore shoulders. Bulky bags are also inconvenient when queuing. Consider the essentials you have to take and then choose the smallest bag that will fit it all. Solo travelers and couples are likely to be able to get away with a much smaller bag or fanny pack than parents of small children, who will need space for all their kids’ stuff, too.

A great day out at Disney hinges on being comfortable. An overly heavy bag that pinches or chafes will quickly turn the Happiest Place on Earth into one of the most miserable. So, look for padded straps that can be adjusted to suit your height and body type. If you opt for a backpack, a padded back panel is also key, as is a moisture-wicking, breathable mesh lining (there’s nothing worse than taking off your bag to reveal a T-shirt drenched in sweat). Bags that offer multiple carrying methods—including tote, backpack, or sling-style—are great because they let you switch position when the first method gets tiring.

Organization

Imagine missing your favorite float at the parade because you’re busy rummaging around for something in the cavernous maw of a backpack that could give Mary Poppins’ carpet bag a run for its money. That’s why choosing a bag with great organization features is so important: with a place for everything, you can find what you need at a moment’s notice. We love bags with a mesh water bottle holder, external and internal pockets in a range of sizes (at least some of them with zippers for your valuable items), and perhaps a bungee or daisy-chain system for lashing your raincoat and other layers to the outside.

At both Disneyland Parks and Walt Disney World, any bag you bring with you (from backpacks and purses to coolers and suitcases) must measure less than 24 x 15 x 18 inches. Restrictions may differ at other Disney parks around the world. For example, Disneyland Paris restricts bags to 55 x 40 x 25 centimeters (roughly 21.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 inches). This includes wheels, pockets, and handles.

You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks into the parks, provided you adhere to a few simple rules. Food should not require heating, reheating, processing, or refrigeration and must not be stored in a glass container. The exception to this last rule is small jars of baby food. You should inform staff of food and drink when your bag is searched upon entering the park.

While your complete packing list will depend on your specific circumstances, we recommend the following essentials: weather protection (an anorak or a poncho, good sunscreen , sunglasses, and a sun hat); a water bottle ; snacks; and a charger for your cell phone. Traveling with small kids? Add wet wipes, spare clothes, diapers, baby food, and bottles to the list. Ziploc bags are great for protecting your valuables on water rides and separating any damp items of clothing, while those who prefer to use a “proper” camera will need space for that, too.

Jessica Macdonald is TripSavvy’s Africa travel expert and Commerce Updates Editor. She has visited Disneyland Paris twice and knows exactly what it takes to enjoy the parks both solo and with family in tow. Products on this list were selected according to hours of internet research and the results of multiple real-life tests carried out by TripSavvy’s team of travel experts.

Travel + Leisure / Tamara Staples

Even a short trip with kids in tow can feel like an epic journey, and taking the right diaper bag along for the ride is crucial. A backpack-style diaper bag is key for comfort while you’re out and about; ideally, you’ll want a model that holds all the necessities for both you and baby and is even, dare we say, stylish? We tested 30 diaper bag backpacks to find the best options, whether you’re venturing out for the day or pulling an overnighter with your kids.

The best diaper backpacks offer multiple compartments and easy access to the critical items inside — because no one wants to rummage through a shapeless, disorganized bag while juggling a crying baby. We evaluated bags based on their capacity, design, comfort, and value, and are continuing our testing over the next six months. We loaded (and reloaded) each bag with bottles, wipes, and diapers, schlepped around the city wearing them. We crammed them into strollers and gave them each the one-handed-holding-a-crying-baby test. (Learn more about our in-depth testing process below.) The models that passed with flying colors were comfortable, intuitive, easy to open, and stylish.

Best Overall

Bugaboo changing backpack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This sleek bag was incredibly comfortable, even fully loaded, and necessities were easy to access via a handy front zipper.

The outer pouch for an adult water bottle is on the slim side and may not fit all bottles.

We love the mix of form and function this backpack offers. It includes both a laptop pocket and a changing mat, and has plenty of snug, intuitive pockets to keep necessities organized. Even when fully loaded with baby gear and a laptop, we found it to be comfortable and light, with the weight of our items distributed evenly. Plus, it looks great — we’d carry this bag even without a baby in tow.

The easy-to-use front zipper on this backpack makes it stand out from some other models we tested. We could access everything we needed via the front, including the changing mat, without having to fully open up the bag and dig around. The velcro top closure is equally simple to use, even one-handed. The bag’s leakproof interior is standard among most diaper backpacks, but the water-resistant bottom is a huge plus — even external spills won’t ruin the bag or its contents. The side pocket meant to hold an adult water bottle is a little narrow and doesn’t fit a larger bottle, but is fine for a standard size.

Although this backpack is one of the taller models we tested, it still fits easily in the cargo basket underneath both large jogging strollers and smaller umbrella strollers. And, it includes straps to easily attach the bag to the handle of most models. Overall we found this to be the most user-friendly, durable, and stylish option we tested.

Best Organization

Ruvalino diaper bag backpack.

  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

With five separate zippered compartments, this backpack is an organized parent’s dream.

Compartments are challenging to access one-handed.

This accordion-like bag features multiple zippered compartments and 16 pockets, so there’s a designated space for just about any item you’d need to carry. The separate sections keep everything well-organized and in place, and prevent items from getting hopelessly buried. Even fully loaded, the bag’s weight is evenly distributed, and its padded straps feel comfortable and secure. The two insulated bottle pockets in the main compartment are a nice touch, too, and make it easy to safely bring along formula or breastmilk for a short trip.

Our biggest issue with this bag is the accessibility of the compartments — because of the placement of the zippers, it’s nearly impossible to access most compartments one-handed. We found ourselves needing to set down either the bag or the baby in order to retrieve items from inside, which can be challenging when you’re on the move. Otherwise, this is a well-designed bag that seamlessly fits everything you need for a successful outing.

The Details: 1.78 pounds | 11.8 x 7.8 x 16.5 inches | Water-resistant polyester

Best Convertible

Caraa nylon baby bag.

This bag is roomy and comfortable with versatile strap options.

The backpack straps are difficult to adjust, and the bag doesn’t include a changing mat.

A cross-body diaper bag can sometimes be an easier style to travel with when you’re carrying multiple bags, and we love that this option lets you choose how you want to wear it. It has a plethora of pockets and compartments — more than we could fill in our testing, really — and a comfortable, pillow-like design. The long pulls on its external zippers make it easy to open one-handed, and items inside stayed in place during testing even when we jostled it around.

This bag doesn’t include a changing mat or a wet bag like some models, but it does have insulated, wipeable interior pockets for bottles and clothes. The shoulder strap and backpack options are equally comfortable, although the backpack straps weren’t as easy to adjust as we would’ve liked. At nearly twice the price of most other bags we tested, this one is on the more expensive side, but it is a stylish, well-designed, and versatile option for travel.

The Details: 2.5 pounds | 12.25 x 12 x 5 inches | Recycled nylon

Best Colors

Jujube zealous backpack.

  • Design 4.5 /5

This lightweight, compact backpack comes in over 17 different colorways.

The bag’s main zipper sometimes gets caught when zipping and unzipping.

The JuJuBe Zealous backpack comes in more colors and patterns than any other model we reviewed, so it’s easy to coordinate with any other luggage or bags you may be carrying. The interior feels spacious with plenty of pockets, but the bag still feels compact overall. We found the exterior zippered pockets to be especially intuitive, and love that one contained dividers and a key ring for all our non-baby essentials. Pockets are easy to access with one hand, although the main zipper occasionally got stuck during testing.

This bag’s smaller footprint makes it comfortable and lightweight to wear, and it fits into both larger and more compact strollers. It also features a couple less common but very useful compartments: a “tech” pocket on top, which could be used for anything you need easy access to, and a pair of loops in the main compartment for holding a baby blanket in place. We’d recommend this pick for anyone who wants more color choices without skimping on features.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 11 x 5 x 16 inches

Best Discreet

Herschel settlement sprout backpack.

This is a high-quality, versatile backpack that can be used beyond the diaper years.

It lacks many of the diaper-bag-specific features that many models boast.

If you’re looking for a diaper backpack that doesn’t scream “I’m a parent!,” the Herschel Settlement Sprout backpack is a great option. It comes with a removable changing mat, and features the all-important side zipper to easily access items at the bottom of the bag. The bag’s zippers were a little harder to use than other models we tested, but they got the job done. This backpack also comes with a velcro piece that can divide the large main compartment into two — a feature we especially liked for the option to convert it from a “regular” backpack to a diaper backpack easily.

The only real drawback to this timeless, durable bag is that it lacks many of the features that make diaper bags especially useful to parents — but that’s also the key to its versatility. It’s a solid choice for those looking for a diaper bag now, and a well-made backpack later.

The Details: 1.4 pounds | 17.75 x 12.25 x 5.75 inches

Best Large Capacity

Béis ultimate diaper backpack.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

This bag holds more than any others we tested, and comes with a detachable fanny pack.

Its large capacity also means it’s a big bag, and it feels heavy when fully loaded.

The Béis Ultimate Diaper Backpack has tons of space and multiple compartments — we can’t imagine running out of room for necessary items, even when packing for multiple kids. The included “changing station” includes convenient pockets for diapers, wipes, and cream all within easy reach, but since the changing pad is built in, babies will likely outgrow this setup quickly. The detachable fanny pack is a convenient feature to offset the size of the bag; it’d be easy to throw your wallet and keys in the pack and grab them separately when needed.

There is a price to pay for this bag’s convenient features, though: it’s big, and it borders on unmanageable. We had to set the bag down to access anything inside, and when wearing it fully loaded, it felt heavy and unevenly distributed. Because of this, we’d recommend this model for longer trips when capacity really counts versus day trips when the focus is on convenient access.

The Details: 3 pounds | 12.5 x 16 x 7.25 inches | Nylon twill with vegan leather trim

Best With Luggage Sleeve

7am enfant london backpack.

This bag’s removable diaper caddy and attached suitcase strap make it especially handy for travel.

The grab handles are not as comfortable or convenient as we’d like, so this bag is less versatile than it appears.

With its attached luggage sleeve and quilted patent look, the 7AM Enfant London Backpack is a chic option for air travel or overnight stays. We found the design of this bag to be especially thoughtful: it includes a laptop pocket, plus a removable diaper caddy with insulated bottle pockets (a feature we didn’t find in many models we tested). The attached stroller straps and luggage sleeve also make it adaptable for whichever mode of travel you choose that day.

There’s plenty of room inside the bag for wipes, a change of clothes, diapers, bottles, and more, but it’s worth noting that it can be challenging to access everything one-handed. The removable diaper caddy helps address this: lifting out the caddy kept everything we needed at arm’s reach. The bag is less comfortable to wear with the included shoulder straps, but worn as a backpack, it’s comfortable and stable. This is a great choice when you’re juggling other luggage in addition to your baby’s bag.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 14 x 11 x 5 inches | Polyester

Best With Changing Station

Baby brezza dante changing station diaper bag.

  • Design 4 /5

This bag’s drop-down changing pad is a game-changer, and we love the 13 different pockets for organization.

It’s challenging to access items inside the bag with one hand.

With one of the largest capacities of any bag we tested, the Baby Brezza Dante Diaper Backpack is not a compact option, but its multiple compartments and built-in changing station make great use of its ample space. There’s plenty of room to store food, bottles, and changing necessities, and we loved the unique antimicrobial pocket for keeping pacifiers ick-free.

The built-in changing station is this bag’s standout feature: the back of the bag unzips to access a dropdown changing pad with small nylon “walls” to keep baby’s hands from grabbing at less-than-clean surfaces and pouches to keep diapers and wipes in easy reach. Unlike some models we tested, this changing station can detach, making it more versatile. Because of its large size and various compartments, this bag is not as easy to manage and access one-handed, but it’s a smart choice if space and a changing station are your top priorities.

The Details: 3 pounds | 16 x 14 x 7 inches | Polyester

Best for Overnight Stays

Honest city backpack.

This bag is roomy, stylish, and very comfortable to wear while walking around, making it ideal for an overnight trip.

Its key holder pocket is buried deep in the interior and not easily accessible from the outside.

Space and versatility are key when you’re packing up for an overnight trip with a baby, and the Honest City Backpack offers both. It’s plenty roomy inside with two large exterior pockets, and it contains both a wet bag for soiled clothing and insulated pockets for bottles and snacks. The wipeable vegan leather exterior gives it a professional, grown-up look — we could just as easily envision using this bag to haul a laptop and snacks to work.

Even fully loaded, the padded straps make this backpack comfortable to wear around, and we had no problem accessing the outer zippered pockets one-handed. We did find ourselves wishing for a more easily accessible space for keys — the dedicated key pocket is buried deep in the bag and hard to reach on the go. Still, we’d recommend this to anyone who needs a stylish overnight bag for both grown-up and baby essentials.

The Details: 2.75 pounds | 17.7 x 14.9 x 18.1 inches | Polyurethane vegan leather

Best for Short Outings

Fawn design the original diaper bag.

Fawn Design

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Value 4.3 /5

This bag’s stylish design and more compact size make it easy to grab for quick day trips.

There’s no changing mat or insulated bottle pockets included.

For shorter trips around town, the Fawn Design Backpack is a stylish, easy-to-carry choice. The faux leather has a nice feel, and we love the easily adjustable straps. We were easily able to fit most necessities inside the bag, but adding in a wet bag and a changing mat would be a squeeze in this model — one of the key drawbacks to this bag. It features plenty of pockets for grown-up essentials, too, including a zippered pocket that lays flat against the wearer’s back to keep valuables extra secure.

We had no trouble operating the bag one-handed, from adjusting straps to opening pockets, and although the straps aren’t padded like some models we tested, they are surprisingly comfortable. The lack of an insulated pocket for bottles or a changing mat makes this bag less functional for long outings, but we found this to be a great choice for a shorter day trip.

The Details: 4 pounds | 13 x 13.5 x 7 inches | Faux leather

Best Lightweight

Jujube travel backpack.

This is one of the smallest, lightest models we tested.

Its features are more basic than some models on the market.

The JuJuBe Right Back is a small, lightweight option that still offers plenty of compartments for organizing necessities. It’s understated and high quality, and its pockets cater to parents’ needs, including a glasses pocket, a wallet compartment, and an elastic strap for keys. It lacks the clever features some models have, like a built-in wipes compartment, but the included components are versatile enough that it still met most of our needs during testing.

This bag feels incredibly lightweight while wearing it, and the padded straps are easy to adjust. Because of its compact size, it fits easily into the cargo area of even a smaller stroller. We had no issues accessing most items in the bag one-handed, although we did have to remove the bag to access the changing pad. Some items, like the changing pad and an adult water bottle, are a tight fit in this bag, but it’s a good choice for a lighter weight backpack.

Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag Backpack

  • Durability 5 /5

This mini backpack still holds everything you need for a day out with your baby.

The thin, unpadded straps make it less comfortable to carry.

The Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag is just that — a miniature version of a backpack that still has most of the features parents need for a day out. It offers fewer pockets than full-size versions (four external and four internal) and, because of the small size, the pockets themselves are a little less versatile. But, it was still possible for us to squeeze all our necessities into this compact bag and we like that it wasn’t bulky to carry around.

The front of the bag opens completely, so it’s easy to take inventory of what’s inside, and every zipper could be operated one-handed during testing. However, this backpack lacks padding overall — the included changing pad is a thin vegan leather mat, and the unpadded straps aren’t very comfortable to wear which is something to consider if you’ll be wearing this for long periods. In general this bag holds less gear because of its diminutiveness, but if a manageable size is priority one for your outing, this is a solid choice.

Other Diaper Bag Backpacks We Liked

Five of the diaper backpacks we tested did not make our list of top recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. The following bags all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Bag Nation Diaper Bag Backpack : This minimalistic backpack offers a large capacity, thoughtful pocket placements, and a comfortable fit. However, we tested more stylish options in this price range.

Twelve Little Peek-a-Boo Backpack : This spacious bag is packed with features, including a changing pad, insulated pockets, and a removable pouch for parents’ essentials. Unfortunately, its straps are difficult to adjust and dangled uncomfortably during testing.

Petunia Pickle Bottom Tempo Backpack : We love this backpack for its gender-neutral design and its deceptively large capacity, but the lack of interior zippered pockets was not ideal.

HapTim Large Baby Diaper Bag : This unfussy option has a huge capacity and nice padding. However, the only access to the interior pockets are from the top, which makes it less user-friendly.

Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Backpack : The comfort and chic design of this backpack nearly won us over — it felt like wearing a cloud. However, the interior pockets lost their shape and functionality when we packed other items into the main compartment, making this a less optimal choice.

Our seasoned testers spent a day in our New York City lab testing 30 backpack-style diaper bags with a range of features. We evaluated each bag on a scale of 1-5 based on capacity, design, comfort, and value, and since durability is key for diaper bags, we’ll continue testing over a period of six months.

We weighed each backpack ourselves both empty and full, and zipped and unzipped each compartment multiple times to test for ease of use. We packed each bag full of baby (and parent) essentials, making note of how intuitive each bag was to pack and whether there were designated slots for necessities.

To simulate a day out with a little one, we took each bag on a brisk walk and loaded it into two different sized strollers. We also gave each bag the crying baby test: using one hand, we tested accessing items inside and repacking them to evaluate whether the bag would be easy to use while holding a fussy baby or toddler. The bags that ranked highest on all our tests were selected for this roundup.

Tips for Buying Diaper Bag Backpacks for Travel

Decide the best size for your needs.

Diaper bag backpacks can vary widely in size and capacity, so consider the distance and duration of your trip before you start shopping. For air travel, you may want to consider a bag that is smaller than 18 x 14 x 8 inches (standard personal-item size) and has easily accessible pockets for your wallet and phone; overnight stays closer to home might call for a larger capacity bag you can toss in the backseat. For day trips and short outings, comfort and portability are key, so look for padded straps and a lighter weight, but you may be able to forgo insulated pockets or built-in changing stations.

Prioritize organization

When you’re on the hunt for a diaper bag backpack for travel, prioritize intuitive pockets and zippered compartments. Consider how many essentials you’ll need to bring and your specific organization style, whether you prefer a dedicated pocket for each item or a more flexible and freeform setup. Look for bags that offer dedicated space for both baby’s items and grown-up necessities to avoid losing your keys or phone in a pile of toys and teethers.

Look for water-resistant material

Diaper bag backpacks are prone to spills by nature, so you’ll want a bag that’s easy to wipe clean and keep moving. Look for an interior that’s described as “stain resistant,” “water resistant,” or “wipeable”; polyester or polyurethane (also known as faux leather or vegan leather) are wise choices.

Choose the right bag for multiple users

Unlike your purse or laptop bag, a diaper backpack is meant to go wherever your baby goes — no matter who’s carrying it. As you’re selecting the perfect diaper backpack for your family, consider who all will be using the bag. A sleek, gender-neutral design can make a diaper backpack more versatile for any caregiver, and a manageable size might be important for petite users.

While you can technically use any backpack as a diaper bag, products specifically designed as “diaper backpacks” offer more baby-specific features, like insulated pockets for bottles and snacks, multiple compartments to organize essentials, changing pads, and wet bags. Diaper backpacks are also typically made of water-resistant, washable, or wipeable material to make cleanup easier, and usually offer padded straps for comfort.

Your diaper bag packing list will depend on your needs, the age of your child, and the length of your trip. Typically, you’ll want to bring along diapers and wipes, a change of clothes, a toy or two, spare pacifiers if your child uses them, and bottles or snacks. If you’re bringing along breastmilk or prepared formula and need to keep it cold until you’re ready to serve it, tuck a lightweight ice pack into your bag’s insulated pocket to keep milk at a safe temperature.

Consider the weather and location before you pack: for summer travel, toss in a sunhat and baby-safe sunscreen, and for cooler weather, add a light layer and/or a baby blanket if space permits. Hand sanitizer, burp cloths, and a small first aid kit also come in handy, and most parents choose to throw their own essentials — wallet, keys, phone, and water — in the bag as well.

Many airlines don’t count diaper bags or diaper backpacks as a personal item or carry-on, which means you’ll be able to board with your purse or tote, carry-on suitcase, and diaper bag. The policy varies by airline, however; United and American Airlines allow families to bring a diaper bag for free, while Delta and Alaska count diaper bags as a carry-on item. Be sure to confirm with your specific airline before you travel.

As a mom who has traveled since the beginning, I’ve done tons of research on the best travel diaper bags. Now you can benefit from what I’ve learned!

Traveling with littles in tow is never easy. In fact, sometimes getting out the front door is a feat in itself.

Before you leave, make sure that your diaper bag is packed with all of the necessities that your little love will need. But first, you’ll want just the right diaper bag to hold your gear.

Take a look at my list of the best travel diaper bags that are out there!

What to Look for in the Best Diaper Bag for Travel

Not all of the best diaper bags for travel are equal. It’s important to know what features to look for so you get the best diaper bag to travel with that suits your personal needs.

Here are the top features you need to consider before spending.

Type of Diaper Bag

There are a few different types of diaper bags on the market – shoulder bags, backpack style or multifunctional.

If you have any form of back or shoulder issues or get back pain easily, I’d recommend staying away from the shoulder bag style.

As we all know, diaper bags get super heavy and all that weight unevenly distributed on one side can really cause problems.

We’ve found that, for traveling, backpack diaper bags are the most convenient. They are usually really spacious, and they distribute the weight evenly across your back and shoulders.

Many backpack styles also come with added stroller clips so they can still easily attach to the pram.

If you want to be able to use your diaper bag in a variety of different situations, there are plenty of multifunctional choices nowadays. They easily change from shoulder bag to backpack, usually just be pulling the straps down or out.

Let’s face it, nobody wants to carry around a worn and scruffy looking diaper bag! Choosing something made from a durable material, that can stand up to being hauled around everywhere, is vital!

Don’t forget about the internal material either, it’s important for a diaper bag to have a waterproof inner lining in case of leaks and spillages.

Number of Pockets

As every mom knows, babies and toddlers come with a lot of “stuff”. The best diaper bag for travel is one with plenty of pockets to store all those essential items.

Look for something with insulated pockets, wet pockets, zip pockets, and elasticated pockets so you have something to suit everything.

I love our Fawns! I have the big size with a clutch I throw into a different bag when I'm not with babies and the mini for times when I just need to throw in a diaper for each of my babes. Great roundup.

Shortly after having my first child, with a trip on the books, I remember messaging a mom friend and asking: What do you do about a bag ? After all, there was a day not too long ago when the diaper bag was an eyesore. An item on a baby registry, it was clunky and baby-centered, and it marked a short life stage, retiring to a closet a mere matter of years later.

Gone are the days; the diaper bag has undergone a rebrand, and three kids and about five years—and many trips by plane and car and train and stroller and foot—later, I’ve found that the best diaper bags have certain features in common: They favor functionality (they come with necessary extras such as a changing mat), they’re stylish (yes, my go-to carry-on has become a diaper bag), and—this is a biggie—they remind parents that you don’t have to stop traveling just because you have a baby.

Below, 10 diaper bags I recommend for travelers. But first, a few things to keep in mind while shopping for the right option for you.

  • The best diaper bag backpacks
  • The best diaper tote bags
  • The best crossbody diaper bags

What to consider when finding the right diaper bag for you:

Much like sunscreen , the best diaper bag is the one you actually use, so think about your needs. Are you a minimalist? Do you love pockets? Are you planning on using one bag for multiple children? Multiple bags for multiple children? Do you tend to travel by plane or by car? Do backpacks make your back ache? Important considerations such as price and size matter, too, of course, but prioritizing needs and individual differences will help you narrow down the (admittedly saturated) market.

Is a diaper bag considered a carry-on and/or personal item?

While rules and regulations vary depending on the carrier, most major US airlines allow one bag per child. Some ( JetBlue ), but not all ( Alaska ), airlines include lap infants—babies under two without a seat—in that allowance. It's best to check your airline’s policy before packing.

The best backpacks

travel with diaper bag

The husband-wife duo behind this travel bag biz with a cult-like following created the bag they needed to take long-haul flights and travel the world with their two littles. The Getaway Bag slides over a roller, includes an insulated lunch pack, dividers, multiple entry points, and a side pouch that perfectly fits a pack of wipes. “Globetrotting parent” needs only to sound like an oxymoron. This bag has seen my family through cross-country flights with toddlers (providing easy access to all of the things ), day hikes (with drinks and snacks and outfit changes all packed up), and day trips into the city; I don’t know that we’ll ever outgrow it.

Weight: 3.4 lbs. Size: 6.5"D x 10.2"W x 19.7"H

Many love Dagne Dover for its accessories (a changing mat, two different-sized pouches, stroller clips, etc.), but its beloved Indi Backpack also has a waterproof exterior (because, spills) and even the small size fits most breast pumps. It’ll become a go-to for trips you don’t bring your kids on, too.

Weight:  3.8 lbs. (medium) Size: 11.75"L x 6.5"W x 12.75"H (medium)

travel with diaper bag

Yes, it’s as sleek as you’d expect. Plus, it checks the boxes: The backpack—which has a removable pouch that you can wear as a crossbody—slides over rolling luggage and has pockets galore, including enough space to pack your own things, too.

Size: 12.2"L x 7.9"W x 15.7"H

travel with diaper bag

You might know State for its cool, patterned kids backpacks , but it might be time to match. The adult pack fits a 15-inch laptop, comes in muted shades of classic colors (a burnt red/orange or a light pink), has a mesh pocket for dirty gear, and a changing pad. You can also personalize it.

Size: 5.9"D x 13"W x 16.5"H

travel with diaper bag

Caraa calls its baby bag the “Swiss army knife” of diaper bags. We can see why: It features insulated pockets (to keep milk cold or bottles warm), comes with its own diaper caddy, has travel musts like a luggage sleeve and stroller hooks, and, with a thin puffy nylon exterior, it simply looks good.

Weight:  2.5 lbs. Size: 12"L x 12"W x 5"H (medium)

travel with diaper bag

When seasoned parents see the words ‘machine washable,’ sometimes they need to know no more. But this backpack from Colugo, which has a luggage sleeve, is also durable, comes with insulated bottle holders, and has an easy-to-access top flap for snacks (for you and them).

Weight:  1.9 lbs. Size: 12.5"L x 4.5"W x 17.5"H

The best tote bags

travel with diaper bag

For those who favor a tote bag over a backpack, Dagne Dover’s diaper tote—which, much like its backpack counterpart, is big enough to hold a breast pump and comes with a changing mat—has the added bonus of a luggage sleeve and a convenient side zip pocket for wipes or tissues. The look is classic.

Weight:  4 lbs. Size: 16.25"L x 6"W x 12"H

travel with diaper bag

Work bag, travel bag, diaper bag, Béis’s The Diaper Bag could be all three. Space is a big selling point on the oversized tote—it fits two laptops! It could also be a good pick for those who want just one bag for the kids; it allows easy access to everything while keeping everything in the bag . No mid-airport dump outs here.

Weight:  4 lbs. Size: 7"D x 19"W x 14"H

The best crossbody bags

travel with diaper bag

Aptly named to be your apprentice during a diaper change, this crossbody holds four to six diapers, a tube of diaper rash cream, a bottle of hand sanitizer, and a changing pad (included). It also fits inside a side compartment in the company’s Getaway Bag for easy emergency access.

Weight:  0.5 oz. Size: 3"D x 11"W x 6"H

travel with diaper bag

A fanny pack worth loving: Less than a foot long with a waterproof pocket that’ll fit up to 20 wipes, plus a changing pad, slots for cards or cash, and a hook for keys or a pacifier, you can easily wipe down this vegan leather bag without worrying about wear and tear.

The Ultimate Diaper Bag Packing List for Air Travel

Ultimate Diaper Bag Packing List for Air Travel

Not staged, I promise! Snuggling with Mickey diapers.

Diapers are only the start of what you need to pack for a successful airplane trip with little ones.  My motto when it comes to travel with babies and toddlers is (like the Boy Scouts) to be prepared.  I use a packing list to make sure that the diaper bag is stocked and ready with airplane essentials.

Here’s my tried, true, and tested diaper bag packing list for air travel:

  • Diapers : Huggies Snug & Dry are a cute addition to your travel diaper bag if you are headed to Disney and want to theme your kiddo’s attire.
  • Wipes : Travel sized packs of wipes are easy to find these days.
  • Antibacterial wipes : For disinfecting the tray table, armrests, and other surfaces your baby will touch.
  • Changing pad : Check out my favorite reusable changing pad for airplanes or consider using disposables.
  • Diaper cream : You may not be able to change your baby as often as you’d like during air travel, so diaper cream is important for extra protection.
  • Pain medicine (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) with syringe/dropper : Pressure changes can hurt little ears or kids can get sick en route during your travels, so always pack infant or childrens’ pain relievers in your diaper bag for easy access.
  • Cheap baby-safe toys : Toys have a way of getting lost under airplane seats or left behind at airports, so don’t bring anything irreplaceable.
  • Bottles or sippy cups with milk/formula : Remember that liquids for babies may require special screening but you are allowed to bring milk, formula, and juice under TSA rules.
  • Baby food : Some baby food pouches are technically too big to pass muster without additional TSA inspection, so look for the pouches that are under 3.4 ounces.
  • Change of clothes for you & baby : Because no matter how good the diaper, explosions can and will happen at some point!
  • Blanket : Blankets can serve double duty for cold flights as well as for wiping up a truly unexpected and large mess in a pinch.
  • Burp cloths : For those with younger babies still prone to spitting up, you need at least one burp cloth and probably more.
  • Bib : If your baby is eating solids or just at a drooling stage, a bib or two is essential.
  • Pacifier : If you use them, pacifiers are great to help baby and toddler ears adjust to pressure changes on descent. Consider bringing a pacifier clip so your child doesn’t drop it on the nasty airplane floor!
  • Plastic bags : Necessary for diaper disposal, trash, or holding wet or dirty clothes.

Best Diaper Bag for Traveling: Buying Guide

Planning a trip with a baby requires lots of consideration.

Therefore, ensure you get reliable travel insurance covering your little one. Once that is sorted, a reliable diaper bag is a must-have.

However, before buying a diaper bag, it is advisable to look at the features. You need a big bag to carry all the baby essentials. It should also help you stay organized and should be easy to carry.

Here are some features to remember when buying a traveling diaper bag.

Capacity and Space

choose Diaper Bags for Traveling

Space is one of the most important features when choosing a diaper bag. If you have older babies or twins, you must get a big bag that can fit all the baby essentials.

However, it’s important to be mindful of how much space you are looking for in a travel diaper bag.

You don’t want a bag that is too big because if you pack everything in there, it may backfire on you when checking in luggage.

You want a good enough size that fits under a plane seat or into the overhead bin. Also, babies are heavy and moving around with them can tire you. You do not want a diaper bag to add extra weight because you will hate it.

Pockets and Compartments

A bag with pockets and compartments will help you stay organized. Get a bag that allows you to keep everything in its place.

Should you need to grab something on the go, it will be easy to retrieve it since it is partitioned.

Ease of Carrying

You need to get a bag that is easy to carry. Go for a diaper bag with padding to protect your shoulders when the bag is heavy.

For further ease of carrying, get a bag that can be attached to the stroller so that you can free your hands and back.

Style and Design

Best Travel Diaper Bags To Buy

The first thing to consider is the style and design of the bag you want. On a flight, you need to get a diaper bag as a carry-on bag.

Backpacks are the most common style for moms and dads, while moms prefer totes.

You need to choose the diaper style that fits your lifestyle and needs. For long-distance traveling, backpacks are ideal since they are comfortable to carry.

When shopping for the right diaper bag for travel, consider what your travel essentials are. For example, if you’d like to pack milk bottles, go for a bag with insulated pockets.

The ideal diaper bag should be easy to access stuff, so one with different compartments that are quick to access is ideal.

Final Thoughts

The best diaper bag for traveling should be spacious and easy to organize. The Ruvalino multipurpose bag is one of the best. It keeps parents organized but also helps you to fit everything.

If you are looking for something unusual, you can go for DBTAC, a military-style bag that is good for the job.

Women wearing travel diaper bags

It’s no big revelation to say that traveling with kiddos can be stressful (but also, don’t try to wait until it’s not ). There’s just so much stuff — like the snack cup , the favorite lovey , and the paci — not to mention the constant threat of meltdowns, delayed flights or holiday traffic, and leaving something behind. There isn’t much to do in preparation for the unknowns but when it comes to handling all the stuff , the best travel diaper bags make it easy. Okay, fine. Easier .

To help you find the right travel bag — and to know what exactly to put in it — keep reading (there’s even a handy packing checklist).

What Are The Carry-On Restrictions?

With most airlines, every passenger with a ticket is allowed to bring one carry-on bag. It’s important to check with your airline for specific sizing, but your carry-on bag should easily fit underneath the seat in front of you , and the max dimensions are 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high (on most major airlines). Ticketed passengers are also allowed a single personal item — a purse , laptop bag, backpack , or diaper bag. When traveling as a family, the less you have to carry the better. So, when your diaper bag can double as a carry-on? Well, let’s just call that a travel-savvy parent hack.

What Makes A Great Travel Diaper Bag?

First of all, you’ll want a bag that’s easy to carry. Backpacks and cross-body bags are winners because they keep your hands free for, you know, strollers and car seats, and actual children. It’s also important to look for bags that open wide so you can see everything at a moment’s notice without rifling around into the abyss. Lots of pockets, especially zippered ones on the exterior, for organizing the chaos (and all those travel toys ) is key. And you’ll appreciate extras, such as a trolley sleeve, pacifier holder, or multiple handles when you’re trekking through an airport.

Finally, aesthetics matter. Whether you prefer a minimalist diaper bag, a leather tote, or a modern look, there are a number of styles to choose from, and some are even waterproof (aka wipeable) because, well, sh*t happens.

What Goes In A Diaper Bag On A Plane?

All the normal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) restrictions, including the 3-1-1- rule , apply to carry-on bags. This means you are only permitted to bring liquid or gels containing 3 ounces or less and that they must all fit in one single quart clear plastic bag. However, parents traveling with infants are allowed to break the 3-ounce rule when packing breast milk, formula, and baby food. Just give the agent a head’s up and remove them from your bag before going through security. Other than that, most typical diaper bag items can be packed as usual.

Air Travel With a Baby: Packing Checklist

Here are a few items to consider when you're packing your travel diaper bag for a trip with kids:

  • Plastic bags/wet bags for dirty diapers or soiled clothes
  • Multiple changes of clothes
  • Baby food, snacks, formula, milk, etc.
  • Bottles or sippy cups
  • Breast pads
  • Diaper cream
  • Changing pad
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Pacifiers and/or loveys
  • Medication, pain relievers, first aid kit

Below, we’ve gathered the best diaper bags for jet-setting or hitting the road with a toddler . May the naps be long and the meltdowns be minimal — either way, you’ve got this .

A Fan-Fave Travel Backpack With A Pocket For Everything

Diaper Bag for Travel Backpack

This fan-favorite diaper bag backpack — with an impressive overall 4.8-star rating on Amazon after 27,000 reviews — comes with a changing pad, diaper organizer, two insulated pockets, and two large zipper closure compartments. You can wear it or carry it by the top handles, and it has a total of 16 pockets, including one hidden security pocket for travel documents. There’s even a padded laptop compartment because who knows? Your baby could just sleep the entire way and let you catch up on a few things. Dagne Dover Indi Neoprene Diaper Backpack  »

Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Bag Backpack

Made of durable neoprene or air mesh

Stylish design in a variety of elevated neutral colors and three sizes

Clips to stroller handles via D rings

Magnetic and Velcro closures

Hand-wash only

The possibilities are endless with the Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Bag Backpack, our best overall pick. While it has all the functionality of a diaper bag, it looks like a much more high-end accessory. With the long-lasting neoprene construction, it's designed to last into toddlerhood and beyond. Repurpose it later as a laptop backpack with its included 13-inch laptop sleeve. Because of its appearance, no one will know that it initially stored diapers and burp cloths.

This 100% vegan bag has an insulated bottle holder, wipeable changing mat, and stroller clips. A matching wipeable changing mat and a zippered pouch add to its appeal. Unlike other diaper bags, the Dagne Dover Indi comes in three sizes to match your needs. The small is ideal for daily errands; the medium is best for a day out; and the large is suitable for both parent and baby. Clocking in at 4 pounds without anything inside, the large bag is a bit heavier than one might like, but the added space is necessary when trekking around items like breast pumps. Choose a style in either premium neoprene or certified recycled performance air mesh in colors like dark moss and dune.

Yoofoss Diaper Bag Backpack  »

Yoofoss Diaper Bag Backpack

Affordable price point

Convenient baby crib/changing station

14 pockets and large interior storage

USB charging port

Power bank not included

Questionable zipper quality

Pack a bevy of baby (and parent) essentials at an affordable price with the Yoofoss Diaper Bag Backpack. Its multifunctionality makes it one of the best diaper bags under $50. Complete with 14 pockets, including two insulated bottle pockets and two waterproof pockets, the Yoofoss backpack has a vast storage capacity. A USB charging port keeps you connected on the go with a hidden back pocket for phone storage. The Oxford cloth fabric is dirt-resistant and waterproof. And when nature calls and it's time for a diaper change, the bag includes a wipes pocket and a fold-out changing crib that extends from the back compartment.

The writer of this article owns the Yoofoss and was immediately impressed by its changing station. Unlike other diaper bags with a simple mat, the Yoofoss has a full portable bassinet that connects to the back of the bag with side mesh panels. It offers additional comfort and privacy while changing diapers or resting on the go.

Although there's no included power bank, and the zipper's quality leaves room for improvement, the Yoofoss diaper bag packs various features comparable to higher-quality bags but at a budget-friendly price.

Wearable as a backpack, crossbody, or purse

Interior pockets large enough to hold breast pumps

Metal feet keep the bag off the floor

With its stylish look and high-quality design, parents can wear this diaper bag as a functional backpack, a convenient crossbody, or a sleek purse, depending on the occasion. Designed by moms for moms, this newer version is an upgrade from its predecessor. The Freshly Picked diaper bag features 12 pockets, an insulated pocket on the inside, an interior key clip, a mom pocket with a magnetic closure, padded adjustable straps, a machine-washable changing pad, and metal feet to keep the bag from having direct contact with the ground. And it's not all flash. Constructed of quality vegan leather, the bag features custom matte hardware, quality YKK zippers, and a spill-resistant nylon interior and exterior. Machine-washable on gentle cycle

Lightweight at 2 pounds

Can’t be worn as a backpack

Small selection of colors

What makes a great diaper bag a great diaper bag tote? Adjustable shoulder straps and wider, unrestricted storage space. The Carry Love Diaper Bag Tote by TWELVElittle, also called a companion or everyday tote, offers all that and a detachable crossbody strap with stroller clips for easy handling. With five interior pockets and five exterior pockets, the tote has enough storage compartments in one functional design. An included changing pad is a nice perk that keeps public changing stations more sanitary.

Two of the tote's best features are the insulated bottle pockets on either side of the bag, so you have room for your water bottle and your baby's milk or formula. A side zipper pocket is convenient for grabbing small essentials like a wallet, phone, or keys that typically get lost in the center tote. Plus, the interior lining has a water-resistant coating, and the lightweight yet durable quilted nylon fabric with vegan leather trim is machine-washable on a gentle, cold wash cycle. Get this tote in a simple black design, or choose a fun print like camo, leopard, or midnight.

JuJuBe Be Right Back Diaper Bag Backpack

Backpack style includes 17 pockets

The front pocket zips open for full interior access

Breathable mesh with added cushioning

Machine-washable

Lifetime warranty

JuJuBe has a vast collection of diaper bags ranging from messenger bags in kid-friendly prints to backpacks in camo. We opted for the Be Right Back as our best diaper bag backpack because of its mix of comfort and style. Breathable mesh padding on the bag's back panel keeps you cool, and a memory foam changing pad adds cushioning. And it wouldn't be the best backpack if it didn't provide ample hands-free storage. With an astounding 17 pockets, including a phone pocket, two insulated side pockets, and a quick-access top pocket, the JuJuBe keeps both you and your baby organized with all the essentials.

The large front pocket zips from the top to the bottom for full accessibility. Inside the compartment are straps to secure items and a full-length zipper to separate clothing, diapers, and wipes. And since even the best diaper bags get messy, the JuJuBe backpack is stain-resistant and machine-washable to tackle all the mess that comes its way. Let the bag air dry to protect the chic rose gold metal hardware and anti-odor treatment included in the lifetime warranty.

Skip Hop Duo Weekender Diaper Bag  »

Skip Hop Duo Weekender Diaper Bag

Extra-large size

Luggage sleeve

Two mesh packing cubes

Can be worn as a crossbody but not a backpack

The Skip Hop Duo Weekender Diaper Bag is ideal for travel, whether a short weekend trip to grandma's house or a week-long vacation abroad. Its features keep travel top of mind. Two mesh zippered packing cubes provide on-the-go organization, which is especially important in a busy airport with a baby. A wide-open drawbridge compartment lets you open the bag with ease and provides a detailed visual of everything packed inside. The handy parent pocket in the front of the bag stores phones, wallets, and keys. An insulated side pocket has a magnetic closure and holds up to two bottles.

Are you worried about going hands-free since it's not a backpack? No need! The included luggage sleeve on the back of the bag conveniently slides down the rolling luggage handles. Hang the straps over a stroller when you're ready to take the diaper bag from the airport to the city or wear it as a crossbody bag with adjustable shoulder straps. Although it's not machine-washable — except for the cushioned changing pad — you can spot-clean the Skip Hop diaper bag with mild soap and a damp cloth.

FlyDad FirstBorn Dad Backpack  »

FlyDad FirstBorn Dad Backpack

Universal charging cable with phone pocket on the strap

Secure laptop sleeve

21 compartments

It might be called a dad backpack, but the FlyDad FirstBorn is the best diaper bag for any tech-savvy parent. As the main point of a diaper bag is to hold a baby's belongings, even the best diaper bags aren't as technologically advanced as anti-theft laptop bags, but the FlyDad is comparable.

The FirstBorn backpack features a universal charging cable with the option to add a mobile charging station to charge phones, tablets, and other USB devices in the designated power bank pocket. An easy-access phone pocket on the backpack's strap keeps you connected on the go without fumbling through the bag. Plus, a secure laptop sleeve in the front separates your tech from the baby's diapers, while a hidden security pocket in the back provides a space for passports, licenses, and wallets.

"Are you putting your laptop next to the wet wipes, changing pads, and snacks? We aren't," says Mariel Benjamin, Vice President of Community and Content at Cooper, an online parenting support group. "Keep the diaper bag focused on the baby to lessen the chance of the daily mess leaking into your favorite tech."

If that wasn't enough, the FirstBorn backpack has 21 pockets and compartments for every parent gadget and baby toy plus a wipes holder with a magnetic closure. An oversized water bottle sleeve on the side is perfect for parents, and the insulated front pocket fits two baby bottles. A dedicated diaper pocket and waterproof changing mat are also included. Breathable mesh padded straps, soft vegan leather trim, and durable ballistic-grade nylon add to the backpack's rugged yet stylish design.

Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack Deluxe  »

Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack Deluxe

Wide and deep design for additional space

Two ways to carry: backpack or crossbody with adjustable strap

Trolley sleeve

Not machine-washable

What makes the Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack Deluxe our pick for the best diaper bag for two kids is its shape and size. At 19.7 inches, the Petunia is the widest diaper bag on this list. It's also relatively deep and specifically designed to hold more items. Compared to the non-deluxe version, this backpack is almost 6 inches wider with extra pockets to store everything you need.

The boxy shape allows for a more spacious interior and a flat bottom design that's sturdy enough to remain upright. An included trolley sleeve attaches to rolling luggage and lets you go hands-free — a must when traveling with multiple kids. If you don't need the sleeve, conveniently close it with the attached zipper for yet another pocket.

Adjustable padded straps let you wear this diaper bag as a crossbody bag or a backpack with insulated bottle pockets on either side. Six interior pockets, four exterior pockets, and a padded tech sleeve complete the included 15 pockets. A memory foam zip-out changing mat attaches to the bag with Velcro under the magnetic front flap closure. The changing pad is machine-washable, and the backpack's interior and exterior are water-resistant. An elevated cable-stitched texture and vegan leather material add to the backpack's high-quality construction.

The Bottom Line

Diaper bags have come a long way to give parents hands-free organization in the form of a helpful accessory. No one diaper bag will be the best option for every parent, but with the variety of bags available, caregivers can find one that meets their needs. We chose the Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Bag Backpack as our preferred pick because of its durable construction, stylish design, different size options, and abundance of pockets that were worth the price.

Benjamin says parents should focus on practicality when choosing a diaper bag. "Find one you can wash, one you will actually be excited to use, one that grows with your baby and with your life, and one that suits your identity." Whether you need a large storage capacity for multiple kids or you're looking for a fashionable bag to use for other purposes, the best diaper bag is the one that fits your family.

Things To Consider When Buying Diaper Bags

Storage capacity and organization: The best diaper bags should store just about everything parents need when traveling with their babies and toddlers, so capacity and organizational features are imperative. Diaper bags with multiple storage compartments are more beneficial than ones without enough pockets. Most of the bags on our list have pockets in the double digits. Pockets designated for specific uses, such as laptop sleeves, diaper pockets, wipes dispensers, anti-theft pockets, and insulated bottle holders, are also essential.

"There are also several diaper bags now that have removable organizational or caddy-type inserts so you can pull everything you need out at once," says Jamie Grayson, Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) and baby gear expert. "This is also great if you want to use your diaper bag without all the diaper-changing accouterments."

Breast milk and formula can only sit out for a short period, and insulated pockets help bottles stay cool. In temperatures of 77 degrees or cooler, freshly squeezed breast milk can stay out for up to four hours, while thawed breast milk and prepared formula can stay out for up to two hours. Separated interior pockets and easy-access exterior pockets add to a bag's ability to keep parents organized.

Additional features like zippered pouches, shoe bags, packing cubes, and foldable changing stations make bags more functional and practical. Although capacity and organization are key features, there is such a thing as too many pockets, as large storage can add to a bag's bulkiness and weight.

"Be honest about what features you actually need and want," Benjamin says. "Don't go for every bell and whistle that may stress you out or add to the noise."

Durability and material quality: As an accessory that travels with you on your back, your stroller, your luggage, and in your car, a diaper bag should be durable enough to withstand wear and tear. That durability is highlighted in the bag's construction. Diaper bags made with vegan leather material are fairly durable. Oxford cloth is fade-resistant. Nylon is a tough material that doesn't fade or rust over time and is relatively resistant to chemicals, abrasion, and moisture. It's known for its strength, elasticity, weight, and mildew resistance. Diaper bags made with high-quality fabrics have longevity and can hold up from the first kid to the last.

Comfort and adjustability of straps: Heavy bags can stress your shoulders and spine and cause poor posture. This heft is more of a nuisance if you're carrying the load on one side — like you would with a tote — and a baby on your other hip.

"Can you hear your mom saying, 'Wear your backpack on two shoulders!'? This advice is the same. The bag should be comfortable and something that you can wear without adding to the aches and pains of motherhood," Benjamin adds. "Keep in mind that many of us will share this bag with partners, nannies, and other caregivers, [so] make sure it fits them physically and works for their styles, too."

Diaper bag backpacks tend to be the most comfortable as they sit on your back and evenly distribute weight. Breathable mesh padding provides more comfort by keeping you cool while carrying a diaper bag. Even if the bag is against your back, the air still circulates and flows freely for more ventilation.

Another feature that can make or break comfort levels is a bag's straps. Wide, foam-padded straps are less likely to dig into your shoulders compared to thin straps. Adjustable straps let you position the backpack to the optimal height – 2 inches above your waist.

Ease of cleaning and maintenance: Parents are already constantly cleaning and would prefer not to add another item to their laundry load. As diaper bags are susceptible to stains from toddler messes like wet and dirty diapers and food, the best ones should be easy to clean.

"Is it washable or easy to clean? Diaper bags get messy for obvious reasons, and you'll want to be able to clean crumbs and other messes out," Grayson adds.

Most diaper bags require little maintenance and are machine-washable, waterproof, wipeable, water-, dirt-, or spill-resistant. Water-resistant material is a breeze to clean and protects the items inside the bag from spills.

How We Chose the Best Diaper Bags

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, our editors chose the best diaper bags based on research and expertise. We consulted with Mariel Benjamin, Vice President of Community and Content at Cooper , and Jamie Grayson , a child passenger safety technician and baby gear expert. We also considered storage capacity, durability, material, price, comfort, and maintenance to determine the products that made this list. Overall, the best diaper bag differs for each parent and depends on the number of children, the amount of use, and the bag's versatility.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

As a mom and diaper bag owner, Cher Checchio , the author of this piece, is always on the hunt for stylish baby gear. With over 15 years of experience reviewing products and a background in editing commerce content for Reader's Digest, Taste of Home, and Family Handyman, Checchio sought out diaper bags that provided a solution to a problem. These included the YooFoss Diaper Bag Backpack, which she's owned since 2022 and still uses to this day.   Megan Wood , Senior Editor at 360 Reviews originally thought she didn’t need a diaper bag, but quickly discovered that she values a stain-resistant bag with interior pockets for easy organization.

Consider how often you plan to use a diaper bag to ensure it meets your needs. If you're constantly on the go with your baby, select a diaper bag with quality material and adjustable straps that will be comfortable on your back for constant wear. If you and your baby take long trips, opt for a bag with ample storage for extra diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and an insulated pocket to keep bottles cold. Babies are also messy, so choose a machine-washable bag or one with an easy-to-clean fabric.

As the name suggests, parents typically stop using a diaper bag once their baby is out of diapers. This timeframe runs from infancy to toddlerhood or around 2 to 3 years old when most toddlers are potty trained. Many diaper bags today are investment pieces with a versatile look that parents can convert and use for years as a beach bag, messenger bag, grocery tote, laptop bag, work or school bag, or travel backpack . The compartments in a diaper bag make them bulkier than traditional bags but also more suited for storing non-baby essentials.

Wet and dirty diapers, crumbly snacks, leaky bottles, and more fill a diaper bag, so parents should choose a bag made of durable and easy-to-clean materials. The best materials are nylon, polyester, or canvas since they’re easy to wipe down and maintain. Nylon is strong enough to withstand stains while also being lightweight. Polyester is waterproof and stain-resistant. Canvas is long-lasting and absorbent. Machine-washable fabrics are ideal, but if the bag isn't machine-washable, it should have some waterproof ability or dirt resistance to stand up against inevitable messes and spills.

We asked, you answered: Parent-approved tips on traveling with kids under 2

Becky Harlan headshot

Becky Harlan

Photograph of a baby sitting next to an open carryon suitcase filled with clothing and other travel items, all against a light pink backdrop.

Last month, Life Kit asked parents to share their go-to advice for traveling with babies and toddlers under age 2 as part of an episode we did on the subject. Over 200 folks responded with tips they wish they'd known before taking a big trip with a little one.

Reading through these responses, it became clear there's no magic hack that works for every kid. Some parents swore by sticking to their kid's sleep schedule on a trip, others said their vacation was smoother when they let the usual routine go. Some sang the praises of the overnight flight (so their child would sleep on the plane), others said their child has never slept more than 10 minutes on a plane no matter the timing.

I flew to Japan with my baby. Here's the travel advice that helped me survive the trip

I flew to Japan with my baby. Here's the travel advice that helped me survive the trip

A few pieces of advice held true throughout. A hungry kid is an unpleasant kid, and children are messy. So packing lots of snacks, extra diapers and a change of clothes ranked high on the list of must-dos. Almost 40 of over 200 responses suggested packing extra outfits in your carry-on for your kid and for you. (If your charge spits up, throws up, blows out or spills it will also get on you!)

So here's a non-exhaustive, impossible-to-be-comprehensive, but-hopefully-still-helpful round-up of your top advice for traveling with little kids. These responses have been edited for length and clarity.

What to pack

A stroller that can be stored in the overhead bin. It's a game changer to not have to check clunky strollers at the gate or check-in counters. —Amy P.

A change of clothes for yourself. If the baby spits up or has a blowout, there's a high likelihood that the mess will end up on you too, especially if you're holding them. Also, be sure to bring a bag to put messy clothes in. Reusable waterproof bags are great and they keep the smell in! —Jenna Yount

Extra diapers. You think you will be fine but if something comes up it's not a good situation to be in. —Jeanna Limtiaco

Overnight diapers. Fewer diaper changes in transit makes everyone happier. —Samantha Warren

Snacks. Remember, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration allows for any size baby food [and baby or toddler beverage], so pack those pouches! —Clara W.

Meds you and your kids might need in flight. That includes chewable Tylenol, Imodium, Dramamine, Zofran, ginger chews, Band-Aids and alcohol wipes. —Paige Ellis

A dark-colored bath towel. It's a blanket, it's for tidying up, it's a tablecloth, it's a sun cover, it shields bottoms from hot slides, it dries off swings. It's a multi-tasking powerhouse. —Judith Heise

Consider what may make sense to buy, rent or borrow upon arrival. You don't need to stuff everything into your suitcase. Buy some of your diapers and snacks at your destination. See if you can borrow or rent large, bulky items like car seats or travel cribs from Facebook Marketplace or your hotel or Airbnb. —Jocelyn Newman

How to get through the flight

Get to your gate an hour before boarding. It gives you time to feed your child, change their diapers, have a cup of coffee and fill your water bottle. It can also help your kid let out their energy before they have to sit on the plane. —Shelly C.

Check the airport for family friendly spaces. Use nursing spaces or pods and family restrooms to reset as needed. Check lounges for nursing and play rooms. —Sara Conger

Take an early morning flight. Those are least likely to get delayed, which is important when traveling with kids. —Carina Ochoa

Parenthood Is A Shock To The System. These Tips Can Help You With The Transition

Parenthood Is A Shock To The System. These Tips Can Help You With The Transition

Board with your partner separately. If you're traveling with two caregivers, have one go on the plane first with all the stuff and do the gate-checking of the stroller while the other hangs back with the kids until the last minute. It gives kids more time to run around! —Andrea De Francesca

Get a plane seat for your kid. Even though many airlines allow kids under 2 to fly for free as a lap baby, if you can afford to get them their own seat, it is worth it. It is recommended for safety to have them in a car seat, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, and the extra space for them to move around is nice. —Nicole Shelledy

Be ready for motion sickness. We were not prepared for how easily some little ones get motion sickness on an airplane. Have throw-up bags handy at all times. —Tiff Bankhurst

Prevent ear discomfort. Sucking during take off and landing may help relieve ear discomfort. My babies have flown with me from 4 weeks onward and never had a problem as long as they had a bottle or sippy cup or straw to suck on. —Shelly Ransom

Don't plan on them sleeping on the plane. It's great if they do, but if it doesn't happen, you'll be frustrated. —Colleen Mayerhoff

Don't worry too much about your kid "bothering" other people. The vast majority of people don't care, and many have been in the same situation you've been in and feel nothing but empathy for you. As for those who do care, they are not guaranteed a child-free existence in public. Kids are part of society too, and they are also allowed to take up space. —Jenna Yount

Make friends with the flight crew. They're going to help, they've got more experience than you, and they also want the flight to be pleasant. —April Graham

Save the screens for the flight. If you're using a screen, wait until you're on the plane. While you're waiting in the terminal, let them move as much as possible. Find an empty gate and play Simon Says, see who can jump in one place the longest, do animal charades. Let them go wild. —Paige Ellis

Download age-appropriate shows for your child on an iPad. (But know that if your kid is under age 2 they'll mostly just want to push the buttons.) —Chantel Dockstader

Travel hacks

Find a lodging close to a grocery store and a park. It makes it easy to buy last-minute things and burn off their energy easily at a park. —Gillian Molina

Dress your young kids in bright, matching shirts. I once traveled alone when my kids were 2, 4 and 6. We all wore matching yellow shirts so people could see we were together. —Emily Hernandez

If you want to let your little one crawl around , bring a pair of socks that you can put over their hands. Then you don't have to worry about dirty hands afterward. —Shannon Geraghty

Hire a photographer. You'll have photos with everyone in them, maybe get to see some scenic parts of the city you hadn't seen before. Dress up, wear matching outfits, be extra! They're only little once. —Tina Doyle

Helpful mindsets

It's not a vacation. It's a trip. You're just parenting in a new place. Set your expectations accordingly. —Laura Henriquez

The airport/train/bus/car is not the time to enforce the normal at-home rules. Do you want Doritos at 7 a.m. at the airport? OK. Do you want to watch 20 episodes of Blippi on the plane? No problem. There are no rules when traveling. This also makes traveling fun for kids because they get to do something different. —Meg Houston

Build in extra time to do things. It will decrease the chances of you and your child getting into stressful situations. —Cori DeLano

You're not going to get as much done as you think with a kiddo in tow. Think about things like nap schedule, traveling with a stroller, meltdowns, diaper changes. On my most "successful" trip with my kiddo, we planned one big activity a day and left the rest of the day open with some general ideas and left room for flexibility. —Whitney Winters

They might not remember, but you will. —Nina Hartman

Monos vs. away: luggage comparison charts.

An Away expert and a Monos fan compare these two well-known luggage brands.

Monos vs. Away Comparison Charts

A variety of Away and Monos suitcases against a white background.

When it comes to purchasing new luggage, the final decision for many buyers often comes down to two brands: Monos and Away. Both brands offer similarly designed hard-sided luggage in the same price range. They've both been around for about the same amount of time as well – Away launched in 2015, and Monos made its debut in 2018.

With so much in common between these brands, you may have difficulty deciding which luggage brand makes the most sense for your travel needs. That's why we've taken Away and Monos head to head in a series of comparisons below.

(Note: Prices were accurate at the time this article was published; they may fluctuate due to demand or other factors. Because of the popularity of these brands, certain pieces or color choices may be sold out.)

Monos vs. Away: The Basics

Key differences: Monos luggage is slightly more affordable and lightweight than Away. It's also available in a wider variety of colors, including limited edition options.

Monos vs. Away: Top Features

Key differences

  • Away's expandability: Most of Away's carry-on and checked bags are available in Flex form (for example, The Medium Flex ); these suitcases offer all the same features as their Classic counterparts, but with additional expandability. While you won't find this option with Monos luggage, Monos does offer an external pocket on its Carry-On Pro and Carry-On Pro Plus .
  • Monos' sustainability: Monos luggage is crafted from partially recycled materials and features vegan leather.

Monos vs. Away: Luggage Comparisons

Carry-on luggage.

Away The Carry-On and Monos Carry-On in cream/beige against white background.

Key differences: In addition to The Carry-On and The Bigger Carry-On, Away offers The Carry-On Flex and The Bigger Carry-On Flex , which feature additional expandability. Monos has the Carry-On Pro and the Carry-On Pro Plus , which offer a large exterior pocket instead of expandability.

Medium Checked Luggage

Away The Medium and Monos Check-In Medium in blue against white background.

Large Checked Luggage

Away The Large and Monos Check-In Large in green against white background.

Key differences: The Trunk by Away is made of polycarbonate, while the Monos Hybrid Trunk features a polycarbonate shell with an aluminum frame and corner guards. Additionally, the Trunk by Away is slightly larger than the one offered by Monos.

Monos vs. Away: Aluminum Luggage Comparisons

Away The Carry-On: Aluminum Edition in pink and Monos Hybrid Carry-On in beige against white background.

Key differences: Away's aluminum luggage features a fully aluminum shell. Monos' hybrid line combines a polycarbonate shell with two aluminum features: an aluminum frame and aluminum corner guards. Also, Monos offers a Hybrid Trunk while Away does not.

The Verdict

Both Monos and Away offer lightweight yet sturdy hard-sided luggage with key features including smooth 360-degree spinner wheels, strong handles, sturdy zippers, and interior compression and organization.

If expandability and durability are essential to you, Away is your best option. In our testing, we found Away's luggage to be more scratch-resistant than Monos' suitcases. Away also has an overall more attractive aesthetic. For almost everything else – a slightly lower price point and weight, more color choices, the option to have an external pocket and a focus on sustainability – Monos comes out on top.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

For these comparisons, Rachael Hood and Amanda Norcross drew from their personal experiences with Away and Monos luggage. Norcross has been traveling with Away luggage for more than five years, while Hood has been traveling with Monos luggage for about a year and testing a variety of luggage for as long as she can remember.

Just 34 Things You May Want In Your Diaper Bag This Spring

Finally, we can get these antsy kids out of the house (and our of our hair).

Heather Braga

BuzzFeed Staff

1. A farm animal book that's beloved for being "indestructible" — seriously, it's rip-proof, nontoxic, waterproof, and 100% washable (which is pretty wild for a BOOK, don't ya think?) Pop it in your bag so when your older kid wants to venture onto the playground your youngest will have some in-stroller entertainment.

Children's book open to a page with illustrations of chickens on a farm and pigs with a mud puddle

My son received this has a gift from one of my friends and all these months later he's still loving it! We keep it in the car, since it's super thin, and he loves that he can pick it up and "read" it to himself. As a baby he loved gnawing on it (duh) and I loved that, despite that, the book remained in tact!

Promising review:  "This book is worth more than it's sold for. This little durable book will be passed down from one baby to the next. The pages are thin, but very durable. The pictures are bright and colorful. My 3-month-old loves it. He stares at the pages and I can see his little eyes moving to the different images. I'm not scared to let him hold it because I know he can't tear it up. I will be buying more of these books." — dawn

Get it from Amazon for $5.95 and check out all the other themes in the series while you're at it.

2. Bumkins washable bibs  that'll turn mealtime into a fashion show (hehe) while also protecting your little one's clothes from all kinds of gross baby food stains. This style is easy to fold up and keep iny our diaper bag for impromptu feedings/ spring picnics.

a baby wearing a mario themed bib that says 'feed me

My son has these bibs in a variety of styles: Super Mario Bros , The Legend of Zelda , and Mickey Mouse. They're super cute and make for silly photos, but best of all they can be easily rinsed off or thrown into the washing machine. I've put the bibs in with his regular laundry and then dried them on cool — they come out nice 'n' clean. Additionally, Bumkins is a small business!

Promising review:  "This is easy to put on and easy to clean. We just rinse, wipe and dry. I can see our son may be able to take it off one day but that's part of the process. I like how light it is compared to the silicone bibs we have." — hmfan24

Get a pack of two from Amazon for $13.95+ (available in a variety of styles and sets).

3. A stretchy  Boba Wrap  you can wrap around your body so you and your baby can snuggle while you're on-the-go. Cuddling and being productive at the same time? Sounds like a parenting dream come true!

Promising review: "I have tried three carriers. This carrier is fantastic. It is stretchy, breathable, and lightweight. My 3-month-old wants to be held and carried around when she's awake. This carrier makes that so much easier. I have two older children and having my hands free to do things for them makes everything easier. " — MomBoss

Get it from Amazon for $39.99 (available in 16 colors).

4. A food and juice box holder  for any parent who has made the grave error of handing their toddler a pouch or juice box only to watch them squeeze the contents all over — this holder let them feed themselves without the mess.

a reviewer photo of them holding the holder with a food pouch inside

Watch this mama's review of the flipping holder in this TikTok.   Flipping Holder is a small business!

Promising review: " BEST THINGS EVER!! My little one is 10-months-old and a little Miss Independent. She HATES when I have to help feed her. She LOVES the applesauce pouches, but always squeezes them and makes the biggest mess ever! I thought these would be worth a shot. I was right!! Works awesome for her with juice boxes, too! AND she's happy because mommy doesn't have to help!! I would definitely buy them again, and I told EVERYONE with littles how much they need to buy these!" — Kaila

Get a pack of two from Amazon for $9.98+  (available in eight combos).

5. A pack of  silicone pouch lids  that'll fit any one you've purchased from the store — yes, even that VERY specific brand that's the only one your kiddo will seemingly CONSIDER eating. It has a no-spill control valve you'll thank your lucky heavens for when your little one is eating in the car.

Check out why a mom calls this pouch topper the "coolest thing" in this  TikTok .

ChooMee  is a small business based in Northern California, owned by a mom, that specializes in innovative products that solve everyday feeding challenges.

Promising review:  " Are you tired of your infant squeezing their food pouches all over themselves? The floor? And most importantly your nice dress shirt as you're trying to leave the house in the morning  and you're already running late for work and no matter how many breakfast burritos from Whataburger you bring into the office your boss is going to kill you for being late again?! Not saying that would happen to me, maybe you but not me. Why? Because I bought these little puppies before that could ever happen. The one way valve saves the day. And even my manly, manicured, buttery soft hands can't squeeze hard enough to get a drop out. Save your shirts and your jobs. Buy these tops!" — Joshua Mueller

Get a pack of two from Amazon for  $7.99  (available in five color combos).

6. A JellyCap  you can pop onto most regular bottles and will magically transform it into a makeshift sippy cup.

reviewer showing the cap on a water bottle with a straw coming out of it

Find out why this parent calls this is one of their "coolest" Amazon finds in this  TikTok .

Promising review: " Wonderful for my autistic 4-year-old! I absolutely LOVE these Jelly Caps! I found them on TikTok and knew it would be perfect for my son! He’s 4 and I’m always forgetting to bring his cup. He’s autistic and struggles when drinking from a bottle. These fit great on his happy meal milk from McDonald’s as well as every bottled water I’ve tried! Only down side is it takes a smaller straw than you get at the store. But to fix then I always put the straw in from the 'bottom' before placing it on the bottle! 10/10 recommend! Just buy them!" — Nikki

Get a three pack from Amazon for $14.99 (available in two color options).

7. A  car seat buckle release tool  that'll save both your nails and your precious time! No one wants to struggle to open those (thankfully) extremely secure buckles while they're kiddo is hitting a pitch that could likely break glass.

The red tool

Watch this mom explain why this tool has been a game-changer in this  TikTok .

This gadget doesn't attach to the car seat, so no need to fret about kiddo's unbuckling themselves while you're driving. UnbuckleMe is a small business.

Promising review: "Love that my kindergartner can unbuckle himself. It makes morning school drop-off SO MUCH EASIER! And he likes the independence of being able to do it himself!" — Lauren

Get it from Amazon for $14.99  (available in six colors).

8. A diaper cream spatula applicator  you'll either laugh or cringe at but will thank your lucky stars that you thought to purchase it when you see how much nicer it is to apply diaper cream to your baby's booty with it instead of your finger (especially when you're out and about!)

Blue silicone applicator with a person's presses finger pressing on the tip to show that it is soft and flexible

Find out why this parent is in "LOVE" with this spatula on  TikTok .

Promising review: "Yes, it’s weird. I laughed (to myself) when I got one as a baby gift. Then my baby got her first rash and after wrestling a diaper closed with fingers covered in diaper cream I remembered this and oh boy what a lifesaver. It applies cream evenly and wipes clean. I now have two and will probably buy a third for the diaper bag. It’s also nice for people who have sensory issues or are new to diaper-changing. Yes it’s weird, but it’s also crazy useful." — jp

Get it from Amazon for $5.94+ (available in five colors).

9. A travel urinal  — a saving grace for when your child, once again, has to pee even though you *JUST* asked them 10x if they had to go at a rest stop.

Promising review:  " I purchased this for my son and our long car trips.  How many times can we pull over to potty on a three-and-a-half hour car trip? Ask my 4-year-old. When I saw this, I couldn't resist. We brought it along, and when he had to pee, no problem. It's only a little gross when you dump it later. Well designed, definitely recommend." — Evan

Get it from Amazon for $8.49+ (available in eight colors).

10. And a pack of toilet seat covers  that'll bring you peace of mind knowing your toddler's tush never has to touch a grime-filled public toilet. You might want to use it yourself, TBH.

Reviewer's photo showing the seat cover on a toilet

Promising review:  " Must-have! If you have a toddler these are a MUST! We travel and it gives us peace of mind knowing that no matter where we are, as long as we have these covers we can safely take her to the bathroom and everything is OK. Before we found these, I used to be super stressed when she would ask to use the bathroom and we were out and about but not anymore. They have cute colors and are big enough." — Dayanna Pita

11. A bug bite suction tool  invented by a mom, that sucks the irritating part right out of an insect bite with a pull of the plunger — it's so easy your kiddo can definitely do it themselves.

Promising review:  "I saw this product on TikTok and had to get it. I’m super glad I did. My daughter and I always get a ton of mosquito bites, and this helps alleviate the itching as soon as you pull the suction back. It’s great." — Rebekka Talley

Get it from Amazon for $9.95+ (also available in two-packs and three-packs).

12. An oh-so-cute  Smily Mia Penguin pacifier  to slip over your little one's hand — they won't be able to toss it across the room and will have no choice but to chomp away on it for some sweet relief from those painful teeth, leaving you with some time to enjoy the spring weather in peace.

Promising review:  "I don’t know why we waited so long to get my baby this. She’s 4 months and only had it for about a week.  Not only does it work wonders for her gums, but it’s also teaching her to grip other things harder.  For example, ever since she’s been using this, she holds her bottle better. We love it totally recommend." — Cristhian Gutierrez

Get it from Amazon for  $7.99+  (available in 13 styles).

13. A pack of spill-proof Munchkin snack catchers  so your kiddo can grab a lil' treat whenever the mood strikes without making a crumbly mess all over.

Two snack containers in blue and green

Promising review:  "After having my 18-month-old crush her graham crackers in the bag and then toss it all up in the air covering herself and everyone and everything in graham cracker powder (including the interior of my car), I had enough.  These cups are a godsend! They are the perfect size for her hand and she can’t just yank the top off. She likes the independence they grant her  and my husband likes not having to strip her car seat and have the car detailed over cracker crumbs." — Shawny

Get a pack of two from Amazon for $5.99+  (available in three color combos and in two count sizes).

14. A Zak Designs BPA-free, leak-proof cup  that'll make taking drinks on-the-go a breeze — and they really and truly do not leak (phew) so when your toddler shakes it upside down (and they will) you won't have a fountain of water to mop up.

a bluey tumbler cup

I cannot even begin to tell you just how many toddler cups I've tried out for my son before settling on these. They really don't leak, he can't open/close it for fun like he does with flip-top cups, and he has no issue using the straw (I think because it's thicker than most!). I personally like that they come in a bunch of fun styles. We have the Bluey cup (shown above) as well as a two-pack featuring Mario and Luigi . My favorite feature, however, is that I can toss it into the dishwasher for easy cleaning!

Promising review:  "They don't leak or volcano everywhere! It's taken so long and so many different straw cups but we finally found ones that don't make a huge mess, even when our son is trying to make a mess!" — A. Smith

Get it from Amazon for  $23.99  (available in eight styles).

15. A  Tushbaby hip carrier  you may have seen across your TikTok travels — parents love how much it saves their backs  and  that it has a ton of pockets for storage.

It's recommended for children between 8 and 45 pounds and can be used in four different holding positions — feeding/breastfeeding, side carrying, front facing, and face-to-face.

Tushbaby  is a small business run by three California mamas and specializes in products that bring a little more ease to everyday parenting life.

Promising review: " A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!! Moms and Dads, this is the absolute best purchase I have EVER made. So worth the money. Do not cheap out and get an off brand. This is the one. I carried my 33 pound 16 month old on my hip for 3 hours in total while vacationing through a state park. 4 miles later, up stairs (were talking 200+ stairs) and dirt terrain I have no back or hip pain . And my son stayed on my hip, comfortable without any fuss. Even my husband who is 6’3” wore it and noticed the ease of putting it on and carrying our chunky monkey. Seriously, if you want to invest in something that will save your back, GET IT!" — Mom 2 Two

Get it from Amazon for $84.99 .

16. An  Oogiebear tool   that's confusingly kinda cute even though its purpose is *a bit* gross — to remove earwax and boogers safely from your little one. An absolute must-have for parents trying to survive allergy season in one piece.

a toddler eating a happy tot pouch

We're a biiiiiig fan of Happy Tot Organics pouches in this home. It's not always easy to convince my toddler to eat veggies when he'd rather have nuggets or pasta (I don't entirely blame him), so it makes me feel a bit better knowing when he downs one of these he's getting a decent serving of fruits and vegetables. They're our go-to on-the-go snack as well, as they don't have to be refrigerated.

Promising review: "Love this for my kids, they can't tell there are vegetables in it and I make them eat one with every meal." — Karina

It goes without saying, I own and love this product. It's simple, keeps my wipes from drying out, and is easy to move swap into different bags as needed. Now that my child is a toddler I'm constantly cleaning dirt/sand/you name it off of his hands in addition to using wipes for diaper changes.

Promising review: "Love this OXO wipe dispenser. It fits perfectly into my diaper bag without taking up too much space. I can easily use it one handed. There is a rubber strap on the end if you wanted to hook it to something." — KKS

20. A battery-operated stroller fan with a flexible handle so you can adjust it as needed to keep your mini-me the perfect temperature while heading out on a stroll.

a reviewer's black fan attached to their stroller

Reviewers have also attached it to their little one's cribs and car seats for extra air flow. I personally used this in my stroller during my son's first summer (he was about three months old at the time) and will definitely be using it during our walks this year as well.

Promising review:  "As summers get hot I knew I needed a fan for my newborn. This was perfect for his crib side, stroller and in the car. Its quiet, and I love the three settings. I don't use the light but it's nice to have. I can leave it on all night on low on a hot night so my son has some air movement in his crib and a breeze on our walks when his stroller gets stuffy . I fully charged it before I used it so the battery life isn't bad but will only last maybe two hours on highest setting before dying. Battery life is short but not bad if you use it on the low setting. I charge it every few days and its held up nicely. Not too bad for the price." — Queen Sweetnez

Get it from Amazon for $23.99 (available in three colors).

21. A universal cup holder that can be easily attached to your stroller or diaper bag to ensure that you  keep yourself hydrated as well as your little one. It comes in an array of fun colors and  has drainage holes in the bottom. 👏

22. Mission MightyMe Peanut Puffs  you might find yourself snacking on alongside your kiddo — they're great for snack time and for exposing little ones to peanuts early on.

Mission MightyMe

Mission MightyMe is a small business based in Atlanta, Georgia. These puffs are so tasty I definitely have been eating them alongside my 1-year-old. They're one of his favorite snacks and a great way to introduce him to peanuts. They're plant-based, gluten-free, and (most importantly) delicious! He loves them! They also come in other varieties that include other types of tree nuts.

Promising review:  "We are doing baby-led leaning and were looking for a good, and simple way to introduce nuts. A Instagram account I follow raved about these repeatedly so I figured I would give them a try. My baby loves them, both flavors. Glad we got the combo pack! Will definitely buy again!" — Lisa Marie

Get them from Amazon for $26.06  (available in four packs).

23. Peanut butter and jelly oat and fruit bars , perfect for stashing away in your diaper bag for when your kiddos inevitably work up an appetite while playing outdoors.

peanut butter strawberry oat and fruit bars

Ready. Set .Food! (a small business who you may have seen on Shark Tank ), creates delicious baby food and snack options that can help introduce them (safely) to allergens. I've given their oatmeal and these fruits bars to my son (who can be finicky about his food) on multiple occasions and they've been a hit! I'll totally be adding these to my diaper bag as an easy (and not too  messy) on-the-go snack option.

Get a box from Amazon for $6.78 (also available in packs of two and four and in four flavor options).

24. A set of adjustable  mesh "sea shell collecting" bags tykes can use to gather all the exciting treasures they find while strolling along a beach or, honestly, even in their own backyard!

A child with a green mesh bag strapped across their torso

Promising review: "I bought these for my kids to use on vacation where we'd be camping and doing lots of outdoor activities. They used them to collect rocks and other interesting finds. They held up well and several months later with use at home there are no rips or tears. The mesh was convenient when collecting rocks on the beach, and we wanted to hose everything down before bringing them inside. They have an adjustable strap and very easily fit all of my kids ranging from ages two to 10 (could fit older kids, too) . I highly recommend!" — a_bennet

Get a set of three from Amazon for $12.99+  (available in two sizes and four color combinations).

25. A package of  water wipes  that are unscented and hypoallergenic — perfect for keeping in your diaper bag, car, and changing station. They'll clean your baby's booty with ease and without irritating them (which is a win for any parent).

packages of waterwipes

I order these in bulk — I love them and rely on them that much. I've tried a bunch of brands and have been happy with a variety, but I always find myself coming back to these basic water wipes. They get the job done and just seem wetter than others I've tested out. No complaints!

Promising review:  "Love these wipes, my son is 15 months old and has never had any break outs or diaper rash and safe to use on hands and face while you are traveling or out of the house. No scent and cleans great, no worries of it drying out either.... if the package won't seal well or is ripped, they stay moist. " — Vera

Get a pack of 3 (with 60 wipes per packet) from Amazon for $12.93 .

26. Or plant-based charcoal enhanced wipes , in case your tyke has extra sensitive skin. These are fantastic at keeping kiddos clean (their cute butts but *also* their hands, knees, face, etc) without causing any irritation thanks to being made from bamboo viscose.

A pack of DYPER Charcoal Enhanced Baby Wipes with giraffe logo for eco-friendly shopping

DYPER is a small business! I've put these to the test and am definitely a fan — they're unscented, gentle, and get the job done. What more could you want in a wipe? I've literally thrown an entire package of them in my car for emergencies.

Promising reviews:  "I really like the texture, scent, and overall product." — Kristin

27. And of course,  Hello Bello diapers  — the number one thing you ABSOLUTELY need in your bag, as they will be absolutely integral to your survival if your tyke isn't potty trained. These also features fun designs... who doesn't appreciate a cute lil' diaper butt???

a baby wearing a candy corn printed diaper

I've been lucky enough to receive *a lot* of diaper samples since having my son, Noah. So, this likely won't be the last time you hear me analyze a diaper brand. #SorryNotSorry. Anyways, I received a super cute package from Hello Bello (Kristen Bell's brand) featuring candy corn printed diapers for Halloween in 2022 — and, yes, they were absolutely as cute as they sound! I love a good theme so right off the bat I was tickled to put Noah's lil' booty into diapers that were appropriate for spooky season (and who could blame me?). I've also had the pleasure of receiving their Grinch themed diapers (so cute) and a variety of other fun prints.

However, I'd be remiss to say the best part is that the Hello Bello diapers actually do what they're supposed to — hold in pee and poop! While I appreciate the adorable themes and patterns Hello Bello offers, I was happiest in the infant/baby months when I didn't have to change my son's outfit five times a day because of pee gone awry. I'm even happier to report there was one day Noah pooped A LOOOOOT (how does so much come out of such a tiny body????) and there were absolute no leaks through the diaper — not a single blowout has been had. At the end of the day, that's what really matters. So, you better believe I'll be stocking up on these for round two with Baby Girl.

28. An iconic Sophie the Giraffe teether your little one will, for unexplained reasons, likely cherish and love chomping away on as their pearly whites start to (painfully) poke through. Trust me, if you're planning to leave your home *at all* this spring while your tyke is teething, you're going to want to have Sophie in your bag.

editor's child chewing on sophia the giraffe

Sophie the Giraffe has become a valued member of our family. I ran out to buy it when my son started teething (badly) as he simply refused every other type of teether we already had (of course). I was skeptical as to why a toy giraffe would cost nearly $30, but I soon learned it clearly had magical powers. Sophie has apparently been around for over 55 years (who knew!) and is made entirely of natural rubber. She has various chewable parts (ears, horns, and legs) that Noah was able to grasp onto himself way easier than any other teether. She's becoming my go-to baby shower gift, and we simply don't leave the house without her!

PSA: Do not wash Sophie with water or if you do, do not get water into the squeaker hole! I've seen a number of TikTok videos noting that if you do this the inside can potentially get moldy.

Promising review:  "I was super hesitant to spend $25 on a teething toy. It’s honestly just a regular squeaky toy, but the other reviews were spot on, and my child absolutely LOVES his Sophie. Something about that rubbery smiley giraffe is just so darn appealing to babies . She is without a doubt one of his very favorite toys, especially once he started teething." — Courtnee Thompson

Get it from Amazon for $26.83 .

29. A   shopping cart cover  to create a barrier between your kiddo and all of the unseen germs lurking around — certainly can't hurt and will also prevent them from, literally, sucking on the cart itself (babies are wild).

a baby sitting in a grey shopping cart cover with white stars

I have this for my son (pictured above) and am *very* glad that I do. As you can see from his first time in a shopping cart at Target, all he immediately wanted to do was chew on it — which is disgusting and germy! The cover protected him from sucking on unknown grossness...thankfully.

Promising review:  "Love! I was in the market for a nice shopping cart cover. My newest baby definitely is one that puts everything possible into his mouth, so a shopping cart cover was a must this time around. It's easy to unfold and fold up. A little tricky to put on the first time, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. It seems to be fairly padded. Covers a standard Walmart cart thus far. I believe it will work for high chairs as well. I do wish it came with its own toys. I would definitely recommend for children who are comfortable sitting up on their own." — Alicia

Get it from Amazon for $24.99+  (available in six styles).

30. Polarized WeeFarers sunglasses , which will protect your baby's eyes from the harsh sun while also ensuring they'll look like Tom Cruise in  Risky Business.  (And that's just as important!)

a baby wearing weefarer sunglasses

I "splurged" on these for my little one and have zero regrets! He, shockingly, doesn't mind wearing them at all and he looks so freakin' cute in them I can't help but take a million photos anytime he has them on. I love that you can register them and if something happens to them within your first year of owning them you'll be able to get a replacement. I even bought them as a gift for my friend's baby's first Christmas — I love them that much. Additionally, WeeFarers is a small business!

Promising review: "We love these! I can’t even believe my 3-month-old doesn’t try to pull them off, but apparently he finds them comfortable enough to just leave them. We get so many compliments when he has them on and people love the play on the classic Ray-Bans Wayfarers and the 'WeeFarer' name. Best of all, I can rest assured that his little eyes are protected. The little strap is great to keep them in place. We will definitely be buying the next size up when he grows out of these." — Sara

Get it from Amazon for $34.99 (available in four sizes and 13 styles).

31. An inexpensive portable white noise machine that'll be your saving grace when it comes to getting your little one to sleep in an unfamiliar place. Go ahead, book that vacation and know that you'll be (somewhat) prepared to take on bedtime. Spring break totally doesn't have to be out of the question just because you have kids!

The portable white noise machine

Promising review: "We use it at night, during the day at home, and even on the go. With our first baby we had white noise on our phones, this just makes our lives so much easier. We just leave it next to the baby with timer, and she sleeps for a few hours." — Tatiana Figueiredo

Get it from Amazon for $12.14 .

32. Baby Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen , a must-have for parents and their littles — it's unscented, moisturizing, 100% mineral based, vegan, cruelty-free, and dye-free. It'll certainly get the job done!

sun bum baby sunscreen

I've use this on my son and it's great! In a pinch, I've used it on myself as well. It rubs in easily (thankfully because putting sunscreen on kids is a TASK and a half) and smells nicely of coconut. I also use Sun Bum's Sunscreen Stick on my son's face, which is equally fantastic, because it's easier to apply in a pinch than a cream.

Note: sunscreen is only made for children over the age of 6 months .

Promising review:  "This is the only mineral sunscreen I will use or put on my children. It's the only brand I've tried that goes on smooth and not super thick , and doesn't leave a white residue. Works great and no harmful ingredients, what's not to love!" — Natalie Anderson

Get it from Amazon for $15.99.

33. A portable pack of soap sheets , because entering a public bathroom is grime-y enough without having to worry "will there be soap left in the dispenser???" These will melt away in your hands and ensure they'll be squeaky clean (very important after changing your kiddo's diaper or helping them wipe their adorable little butt).

The paper thin lavender soap sheets, which come in a matchbox size box

Promising review:  "I’m thrilled to have purchased these! Amazing soap sheets. The scents are not overwhelming. I have sensitive skin and, does not irritate my skin. Hands feel soft, clean and smells great. My 6-year-old son loves these. With pretty much everything still closed down, due to COVID-19, we have been doing a lot more outdoor activities. It’s nice to have soap handy when in middle of hiking or biking and, need to wash hands before eating lunch. I would strongly recommend these soap sheets." — Ann

Get three packs of 100 sheets each from Amazon for $7.99+  (available in lemon, orange, lavender, a variety pack of the three scents, or unscented).

34. And a Java Sok to keep your drink chilled, perfect for any parent who is tired of drinking watered-down iced coffee because they got caught up in the morning madness with their baby and didn't have a spare moment to sip on it.

a light green printed java sok

Wow, I need one of these. Not only do I never have time to calmly drink my iced coffee, but my son is also currently obsessed with pulling on straws. So, if I'm with him (which I typically am) I have to hide my drinks or set it somewhere far from us.

Java Sok is a small business that sells an array of reusable neoprene cup holders designed to keep drinks colder and eliminate condensation.

Promising review:  "Obsessed! Great stocking stuffers or a gift to yourself! Will be buying more. I’m someone who takes a while to drink their drinks (mom life) so it keeps my drinks from watering down!  Love this product! Feels like a coooozy." — Thumbs up

Get it from Amazon for $11.99+ (available in a variety of prints and five sizes).

AIR BUBBLE MEETS BACKPACK

jk720 - Mar 06, 2024

If air bubble was a backpack, this is it. Shoulder bags are a pain and get in the way when traveling. This bag made security and boarding a plane and cruise easier and faster. The compartments help keep everything organized and there was enough space for the necessities for a 1 and 3 year old (wipes, diapers, extra clothes). The outer side pockets were big enough for their thermoses, and the back pocket in the bag was just enough to fit a thin changing pad. The straps are padded and comfortable. I hope there is an updated version next year! ...

Weak Straps

bangkangg - Feb 16, 2024

I really wanted to like this bag! There’s a lot of organization in this bag via pockets and the included pouches. However, upon receiving the bag, I noticed that the straps are incredibly flimsy. The padding is thin and uncomfortable. Also, the photos were deceptive and didn’t show how the straps were anchored to the top of the bag! The straps are attached to the bag with a small pieces of fabric. I wanted a maternity bag that could be used for travel and heavy loads (babies need a lot!) and I doubt this bag would last. For the price, this bag is not worth it. I will be returning it! ...

YettyBear - Feb 09, 2024

I just absolutely love this bag. It fit everything I needed and more for my baby. Every time I packed it I found another compartment. This meant another spot to put something else in. It’s versatile. ...

Travel to Moscow with Kids

Cruise on the Moskvar River when you travel to Moscow with kids

By Helen Fletcher – HolidaysFromHels

Looking for a bit of an adventure, we decided to travel to Moscow with our kids, in the middle of the winter . And, it turned out to be the snowiest winter in the past 20 years. It took some preparation, but seeing the onion domed cathedrals dolloped with snow was magical. Traveling to Moscow with kids, and doing so in winter was challenging but rewarding. And, going at this time of year provided us the bonus opportunity of trying out snow tubing and ice skating in the once infamous Gorky Park . All the details from our family adventure are below, so let’s get going! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave us a comment below .

Table of Contents

The Main Questions We Had About Our Travel to Moscow With Kids

In the winter time, would it be too cold to travel to moscow with kids.

The answer is no, not if you bring the proper gear . February is the best time to travel to Moscow with kids, as the temperatures are no longer at their coldest. It can get to -40 degrees in January, but in February it is not yet warm enough for the snowy streets to turn to rivers of slush, as they do in March.

Is is safe to travel to Moscow with kids?

We felt no sense of danger, even at night. The soldiers and medal wearing military men wandering around the Kremlin simply add an element of interest rather than fear.

7 Ways to Plan Ahead for Some Travel to Moscow with Kids

1. start the visa application asap.

Make the visa application no more than 90 days before travel, but plan to use the full 90 days . Part of the process requires you to travel to the application office for digital fingerprinting for everyone 12 or over .

Fill in the visa application form .  For UK citizens apply here . Be warned, it is a pretty intrusive and time consuming process to do a whole family application. You will need your last 3 passports and details of all countries you have visited in the last 10 years. You will also need to disclose your monthly salary, and you will also need to note your social media accounts.

I’m not going to lie, the visa application process is no walk in the park. You can pay companies to do the legwork for you, but I was up for saving money, and finding the information needed to complete the form is the hardest part anyway. No one else can do that for you.

NOTE: There are also lots of travel agency sites masquerading as official application centers, so go directly through the Embassy or Consulate nearest you to avoid extra costs.

2. Pay for Flexibility

Book flexible flights – in case the visa does not come through. Also, make sure to book a hotel room that can be canceled/rescheduled with no extra charge. When you book a hotel, obtain a hotel voucher to be submitted with your visa application. Ensure the names and dates on the voucher exactly match your passports and flight dates. Also look at how cool your name looks in Russian writing!

3. Packing Appropriately for a Winter Trip to Moscow

Travel to Moscow with kids and play in the snow

Visa applications complete and accommodations booked, you must now turn your mind to packing for the extreme cold. However, as you will also be visiting restaurants or ballets when you travel to Moscow with your kids, your normal hiking gear may not cut the mustard. It is the indoor/outdoor transition that makes city packing harder.

When we traveled to Moscow in February, the forecast was for lows of -20 C. No matter when you travel to Moscow, first check the Moscow weather averages . Although our children are pretty skinny, they were still able to roll in the snow to their heart’s content with the following gear:

Here is What We Brought

  • Waterproof socks – These were a recent discovery for me but an invaluable one. Bring them for all the family. Go for mid-shin rather than ankle length.
  • Waterproof Gore-Tex boots – Ankle boots were sufficient for the city snow when combined with waterproof socks, and they looked more acceptable than full on snow boots when indoors.
  • One pair of smart indoor shoes.
  • Thermal layer (top and bottoms) and a fleece layer – Thin layers are more versatile and fit into your bag.
  • Everyone should bring their own daypack for all the clothes you will be taking on and off.
  • Fleece-lined waterproof soft shell trousers – These look almost like normal trousers but keep your legs warm and dry. Full snow trousers would be impractical for walking around shops.
  • Everyday trousers to wear under the waterproof layer – Use these for eating out. The fancier restaurants have extensive subterranean cloakrooms, and you can de-robe and transform into your classy under layer self.
  • Thin merino wool scarf and hat.
  • Gloves – 2 pairs each for after dark when the temperatures plummet and your fingers freeze. At least one waterproof pair for snow-balling.
  • Winter coat – I went for sheepskin, but the rest of the family sported thin–ish ski jackets. The lighter and thinner without sacrificing warmth the better.
  • Photocopies of your passport and visa – There are rumors that police sometimes demand to see your papers, and then they refuse to return them unless you pay them money. The advice we followed was to leave the originals in the hotel, and only carry the copy-documents with you when you are out and about.

4. Learn a Bit of Russian

Use Duo lingo to learn the Russian alphabet, so you can read words like “pizza” on a menu.

5. Practice your Skating for Moscow

We had a couple of goes at home, as we were a bit scared there would be no sides in Gorky Park to hang on to.

6. Plan and Print your Moscow Metro Route

travel to Moscow with kids and use the metro

Make sure you use the Moscow Metro . The stations are works of art in their own right, filled with golden frescoes, fancy lighting and communist era sculptures .

If, like us, you neither speak nor read Russian, take the precaution of using Google Maps to plan all Metro journeys in the comfort of your own house, and print these off to take with you. Wifi is not always available when you are underground, so be prepared.

When you travel to Moscow with kids, let alone anyone, reading station names as they whip by is virtually impossible. By counting their number and with a quick scan of the first few characters, you can check them off against your map, and you stand a fighting chance of getting off at the right stop.

7. Plan Your Food

With a family, the need to eat is never more than a couple of hours away, so planning your food is quite important. While you’re in Moscow check out some of the local food to try in Russia . Also, book hotels that include breakfast, and stay in a hotel near a shopping centre. Then, at least it is only lunch you have to worry about. We went for the Novotel Moscow City Hotel , which is right next to a mall, a snowy park and a Metro stop. They allow four in a family room, and breakfast is free for under 15’s.

TIP : Food courts are good for picture menus and pointing based ordering.

Our Moscow Itinerary

TIP : Do not start your travel to Moscow with kids trip on a Monday – most of Moscow is closed.

Day 1 –   Lenin’s Tomb / GUM / Kitai Gorod / Kremlin at Night

All of these activities are accessible from Red Square, as this is the epicentre of Moscow. Arriving from a hotel in the monochrome world of the suburbs, you will be blown away by the riot of colour in the square.

Morning – Lenin’s Tomb

travel with diaper bag

Cost : Free!

Location : Red Square

Opening Hours : 10 -1pm Tue-Thur and Sat (not public holidays)

Timing : Allow up to an hour (including queuing)

The queue for the security check for Lenin’s Tomb takes about 30 minutes. You then make your way past the tombs of the former Russian Presidents, lined up along the outside wall of the Kremlin. As you enter the mausoleum, warn your children not to speak, or they will be severely shushed by one of the armed guards. Do not laugh.

Shuffle your way past the embalmed body (not taking any photographs) and out the other side straight on to Red Square. The children can then impress their friends by telling them they have seen a dead body.

Lunch – Red Square (outside) or GUM (inside)

A family enjoying Russian blinis in Red Square in Moscow

For lunch, if you are giving up vitamins for your holidays, eat a traditional Russian blini (chocolate pancake) at one of the stalls in Red Square , or head inside to a café in GUM , the largest department store in Russia, next door. The name “GUM” comes from Glavny Universalny Magazin (“Main Department Store”), formerly Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (“State Department Store”).

Afternoon – GUM

Russian Dolls tumbling from the ceiling in GUM

A good place to be indoors and warm up, this historic state shopping centre runs the length of Red Square, and it contains 200 (centrally heated) shops. Built in the 1890’s, it was nationalized after the revolution, and now it appears to be flirting with capitalism. It has a particularly impressive glass roof, and many high-end boutiques and cafes. Spend an hour or so exploring and having a coffee overlooking Red Square, and then head back outside.

Kitai Gorod

Travel to Moscow with Kids and view the Colorful toppings on the buildings of Kitai Gorod

As the sun lowers in the sky, explore the back streets behind Red Square, an area known as Kitai Gorod , where fondant fancy pink and white buildings glow in the evening light.

Kremlin at Night

Travel to Moscow with kids and see St Basil’s Cathedral by night - like a fairytale sultan’s hat

Then, head back into Red Square to see the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral magically illuminated at night.

Day 2 – Crown Jewels – Kremlin Armory / St Basil’s cathedral

The Golden cathedrals inside the Kremlin in Moscow

Cost : R1000 (under 16’s are free) for the Kremlin and the Armory

Location :  By the Kremlin walls, next to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Opening Hours : [Museum opening hours 10:00 to 17:00] [Ticket office 9:30 to 16:30] [Closed – Thursdays]

Timing : Allow 2 hours for the armory and up to an hour for the cathedrals

Buying tickets is complicated. You can buy adult tickets up to 17 days in advance, but they do not guarantee entry for free ticket holders. Childrens’ free tickets are only available 45 minutes before each “session”, and tickets for the following session are only available after the current one has ended. All the rules are here .

In essence, to ensure you all get in together, arrive 45 minutes before opening time, and book all of your paid and free tickets at the same time.

Join the security queue for a bag search at the entrance, and then walk through into a world of golden topped white cathedrals. You enter the armory by way of a small door just on your left as you go in.

Here you will find the main event – the amazing Russian Crown Jewels. No photos are allowed inside but you will see Fabergé eggs, a fleet of royal carriages, thrones and gowns, 4 foot high jewel encrusted tomes, huge silver goblets and tigers – all brought to life through a free English audio guide.

If the crown jewels were not impressive enough for you, consider checking out some of these best Instagram sites in Moscow .

Afterwards, wander around the beautiful mosaiced edifices, and check out the tomb of Ivan the Terrible in the Archangel Cathedral.  (Under 14s are not allowed in The Great Bell tower.)

No food is available in the Kremlin, so head 5 minutes round the corner to a stall in Red Square or into GUM – depending on your budget and the weather.

Afternoon – St Basil’s Cathedral

Stripy, swirly, snow topped St Basil’s Cathedral while traveling to Moscow with kids

Cost : R500 (free for under 16’s)

Opening Hours : Check them out here .

Timing : 1 to 2 hours

Circumnavigate the incredible outside, looking up at the impossibly stripy and colorful domes, before exploring the golden interior of St. Basil’s Cathedral . Again, there is an English audio guide available.

Day 3 – Moscow Zoo / Gorky Park

An Arctic Wolf in the Moscow Zoo – right at home

Cost : R600 (children up to 17 free)

Location : 30 minutes from Red Square by Metro

Opening Hours : Open daily 9AM-5PM

Timing : Allow about 2 hours

In the winter you pretty much get the zoo to yourself. It was also a real bonus so see it knee deep in the snow. Extremely fluffy snow cats, mountain goats and arctic wolves looked right at home. The monkeys looked a long way from it, and the bears appeared to be hibernating. I did feel sorry for the creatures in the antipodean section.

There are plenty of indoor enclosures to escape the cold and lots of big animals to entertain the kids – giraffes, wolverines, musk oxen and elephants.

Most of the food stalls are closed in winter, but there is an indoor café serving hot drinks, cake and snacks inside the zoo.

Afternoon – Gorky Park

Tubing in Gorky Park when you travel to Moscow with kids

Cost : Tubing – ~R200, Skating – R100-R500 depending on the time

Location : 25 minutes by Metro from Red Square

Opening Hours : 10AM-3PM & 5PM-11PM Tue-Sun

Timing : As long as you’d like!

Gorky Park fronts the frozen Moscow river. Walk along its banks, and then fly on a rubber ring at speed in the tubing zone.

After dark, hire some skates, and take your place amongst pirouetting Russian experts on the largest, neon lit, disco ice rink in Europe. We were pleased to find that most of the pathways did have sides for clinging on to whilst finding our ice feet.

Family ice skating session in Gorky Park

A maze of park paths are transformed into an icy track that leads past towering illuminated cubes, walk-in-with-your-skates-on cafes and hot chocolate booths.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “disco lights” while traveling to Moscow with kids

Optional Moscow Extras When You Travel to Moscow With Kids

  • If you have more time, tickets to the Bolshoi Ballet are much cheaper than at home (note that under 16’s are not allowed to all performances).
  • For a spot of decadence, try the lunch menu at Café Pushkin , a former nobleman’s house, and dine amongst people in ball gowns in one of their themed rooms – a wooden panel pharmacy or antique filled library.
  • Consider catching the train to the equally beautiful St Petersburg, as covering more in one trip will save you the bother of another visa application for a return journey.

Kids playing out in a Russian park (Krasnaya)

Any travel to Moscow with kids is an off the beaten path adventure and certainly so in winter time. And although English is not widely spoken, the medium of mime does get you a long way. So, pack your bags, make sure you plan ahead, and craft your own Moscow family adventure!

If on the off chance this doesn’t all sound good to you, and if you’re looking for something that is the polar opposite of traveling to Moscow with kids in the winter time (pun intended), consider checking out this family friendly Bali off the beaten path itinerary . But no matter what you do, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.

I will fight for overhead space on a plane, but I shouldn't have to | Cruising Altitude

travel with diaper bag

I’ll admit it. I will elbow you out of the way to get on the plane 30 seconds sooner and secure overhead bin space. I’m not proud of it, but I'll probably never see you again, and I really don’t want to have to check a bag on most flights.

I’m part of the problem, but I’m not alone. The bag wars just keep heating up.

“We travel a couple times a year, about four times a year, and we’re noticing that we don’t have any overhead space for our bags. When people are getting on the plane, they’re taking the first (space) available,” Elaine DiCresce, a retiree from Minneapolis, told me. “The last few times, we actually checked our bags at the gate. It’s just frustrating.”

So how did we get here? Why is overhead bin space at such a premium, and what can be done about it? Here’s what I learned.

Who sets carry-on bag rules?

Most flights have a 1 + 1 rule: one carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin and one personal item that fits under the seat in front in economy and on most domestic flights, but these guidelines are flexible and not totally set in stone.

“The airlines make the rules,” Loulu Lima, founder of the Texas-based travel agency Book Here Give Here , told me. “This is real simple and every airline has a different rule.”

That is to say, there’s no overarching regulation about what carry-on bags have to be, just that most airlines use similar equipment and set standards more or less the same way.

“Sometimes you’ll hear an agent blame the FAA, but that’s not true,” said Brett Snyder, author of the Cranky Flier blog and owner of the Cranky Concierge travel agency.

But whenever you fly, it’s a good idea to check the details of your carry-on allowance.

Lima said each airline has slightly different dimensions for allowable carry-on bags, and different tickets have different rules. Some basic economy tickets might not allow for overhead bin baggage, and ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier may charge an extra fee for carry-on bags.

What are the best ways to secure overhead bin space?

Unfortunately, there’s no great strategy here. The best way to access a bin on most airlines is to be in an early boarding group, which usually means having a more premium ticket, having frequent flyer status with the airline, holding the right credit card or paying for access.

“I hate to say it, but sometimes I would join a credit card that gets you earlier boarding, or buy that early boarding space. It really depends on the airline,” Lima said.

How can overhead bin space be less competitive?

First, a brief detour to look at why bin space is so sought after in the first place:

“We initially got there when checked bags were still free, but people were primarily concerned that their checked bag would be lost,” Snyder said, “When (airlines) started charging for checked bags, then it became even more important for people, because people don’t want to pay for it.”

Lima agreed that passengers mistrusting airlines is a big part of why so many passengers rely solely on carry-ons on their trips.

“We’ve all become control freaks to a certain extent,” she said. “There’s no trust that the bag is actually going to make it. Why do you think the AirTags and the Tiles and all of these other things are so popular these days?”

Airlines are aware that access to bins is competitive and frequently tout improvements that mean more space for rollaboards. In fact, just on Tuesday, United Airlines announced it was installing larger bins on its Embraer E175 regional jets, operated by Skywest. Regional jets, which typically fly short routes, are notoriously tight on carry-on space.

Beyond physical improvements to overhead bins, airlines can’t do much to help with the competition, though.

Snyder said they can encourage or require passengers to gate-check their bags but acknowledged that sometimes backfires, especially if they start forcing checks before the overhead bins are really full.

And, of course, airlines can charge for overhead bin access, which is unpopular with passengers, but it does smooth things along at the boarding door.

“You have airlines like Spirit and Frontier, they charge you more to carry-on than to check a bag,” Snyder said. “You don’t see the same kind of mad dash that you see on other airlines to get onboard just so you can claim your bin space.”

Yet, the efficacy of these practices is somewhat limited.

For DiCresce and her husband, Clifford, they’re left wondering why airlines don’t assign slots in the overhead bin like seats, and to be honest, I think it’s a fair question to which I don’t have an answer.

Expert packing tips

Until new innovations or some sort of sorcery make overhead bin space unlimited, we’re stuck duking it out with fellow passengers for whatever we can get.

Lima said she usually travels with carry-on bags only and that you can minimize the space you need by being strategic about how and what you pack.

“I’ve gone to China and to Finland for three weeks and I’ve had different temperature changes,” she said. “I’m all about rolling and, as a plus-sized woman, my clothes are bigger than most, so if I can do it, everyone else can do it, too.”

For Snyder, the best way to avoid the stress is to just determine not to rely on the bins at all.

“When you travel without a carry-on bag, it is remarkably freeing. You, all of a sudden, don’t care when you board if you have an assigned seat,” he said.

And I’ve seen for myself that the checked bag system is increasingly reliable. I’ll still fight you for that overhead bin space for now, but I may be coming around to Snyder’s view.
